Collégien, il est tombé sur un album de blues qui l’a marqué et se mit à écouter de grands succés qu’il passait en boucle à partir d’un petit lecteur de CD portable.
Réalisant la passion que son fils avait pour ce style musical sa mère lui a offert un coffret de trois CD : Muddy Waters - King Bee , Hard Again et I'm Ready.
Plus tard Rob écouta: Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, The Stones et ZZ Top et au début de son adolescence, il acheta le premier album des’’ Black Keys’’.
