The rumble of vintage engines and the aroma of breakfast tacos fill the air as we broadcast live from the Tailpipes and Tacos cruise-in at Lupe' Tortilla in Katy, Texas. This popular gathering of automotive enthusiasts provides the perfect backdrop for conversations with passionate car collectors and restorers who share the stories behind their prized vehicles.

Stan Holt, the proprietor of Loopy Tortilla and host of the event, sits down with us to discuss his impressive 52-car collection. With characteristic humor, Stan shares the tale of his impulsive purchase of a 1941 Packard at a Mecum Auction despite not registering as a bidder. "The guy was asking me where's your bidder number? I said I don't have a bidder number. He said you can't bid without a bidder number. I said oh yeah, you can. I just bought that," Stan recounts with a laugh. His collection includes everything from this beautiful Packard to a 1971 Cadillac Coupe DeVille with period-correct avocado green interior.

We also speak with Trey Sider about his meticulously restored 1958 Plymouth Fury, modeled after the iconic car from Stephen King's "Christine." Trey details the four-year restoration process, including trips to California scrapyards to source authentic parts. His dedication has resulted in a show-winning vehicle that captures the essence of late-1950s automotive design, complete with period-correct interior fabrics and a powerful 392 Hemi engine.

Between these fascinating conversations, we discuss upcoming events including the Hot Rod Tour of Texas, which will bring over 300 classic cars through the back roads from Victoria to Madisonville. We also provide a comprehensive review of the 2025 Toyota Corolla and practical recommendations for parents looking to purchase used SUVs for teen drivers.

Throughout the episode, nostalgic discussions about automotive history – from cigarette lighters in dashboards to the evolution of power steering – create a rich tapestry of car culture that spans generations. Join us for this celebration of automotive passion where every vehicle has a story to tell and every collector has a unique journey to share.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
I am Mimosa.
A mimosa is to get rid of thewine flu.

It gets the vitamin C back in your system.

That's a remedy.
A mimosa A mimosa is to get ridof the wine flu.
It gets the vitamin.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
C back in your system and go yeah, that's it, that's
a remedy.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
Well, we've been pretty good.
We can't complain.
Well, we can complain, butwe're not going to.
Well, some of us aren't.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Once we're off the air, we'll get into that.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
Yeah, it's bad, it's really bad.

Is it?

Speaker 4 (01:46):
It's called Married in America.
I got it, I'm not, and she'sprobably listening to the show.
There's a reason for that.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
There's always that You've got to decide.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
You have to make a decision.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Which way you're going.
It's very interesting.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
You're at that intersection.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
You're right there.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
You talk about marriage and which way he's

I said how is that?
Well, y'all aren't livingtogether, but you're dating,
you're holding hands, you go out, it's a great date.

Speaker 3 (02:30):

So how are things?

Speaker 2 (02:53):

We did two in Louisiana,belrose.

Speaker 5 (03:01):

How'd you do?
I'm sorry.
How'd you do?
I heard you.
I'm sorry.
Okay, how did sheila do?

Speaker 1 (03:10):
she did well.
You know that's funny becausethere's a pattern going on here
she always does pretty well, andyou know, yeah, exactly don't
see the humor in it at all.
No, no, not at all so I.
I really wanted to focus, well, not only on this great event.
We love coming out to tailpipesand tacos We've started enough
of them but spring and fallworks for me, does it?

(03:32):
Yeah, it's good.
Is that kind of the patternthat we're in?
I just kind of got it.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
I don't know Chase is taking this over, but we're
praying.
You're going to be with us inthe fall.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
I'm fall, so I'm sorry, exactly, um, so I wanted
to ask you about your carcollection.
That's what I wanted to focusin on.
Do we have anything new in thecollection?
Let's not talk about it.
Well, can we talk about theones that she knows about?
oh, okay, you have to talk incode yeah, well, I see that the
buick is over there.
I actually have two Buicks heretoday.
You have the 55.
Yeah, and then you have thisbeautiful car here.
That's a Packard.
This is a Packard, that's aPackard.

(04:12):
Oh well, they're very close, they're very similar in looks.
All the cars were similar inlooks much like today.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Uh-huh, yes, exactly they look like turtles today.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Is that not the one that Amy drove off after her
wedding?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
No, that was black.
This is green.
Okay, gotcha, this is green.
That's the original paint job.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Well, they all kind of run together for me at this
point in my life.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Well, it's your age, yeah, yeah, here's age.
They run, yeah.
So this is a Packard.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
I've not seen that auction.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
No he drank all the wine out of the trunk.
No, he drank the wines while Ibought it.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
It was 3 o'clock, funny story, though I planned
not to buy anything.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
You always do that, though I didn't know I didn't
sign up.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
I got a day pass, just like everybody else.
And here it comes.
You got a big NR on thewindshield.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
No reserve.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
No reserve.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
And you said, hmm.
So I'm watching it and I lookinside.
What year is it?
41.
41.
And so Judd's there, he'slooking for me.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Dale Holquist is talking to Judd Well, there's
trouble right there, he saidhave you seen my dad?

Speaker 2 (05:22):
He goes.
Yeah, he's up on the big screenright there.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
With his hand up.

Speaker 5 (05:27):
Yeah, he just bought him.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
I guess I don't know what, a Buick or something.
Judd said he didn't sign up.
So when you bid I always waituntil he picks up the gavel.
I will help him get it up there.
So Judd comes running up out ofbreath.
The guy was asking me.
He said where's your biddernumber?
I said I don't have a biddernumber.
And the guy said you can't bidwithout a bidder number.

(05:50):
I said oh yeah, you can.
I just bought that.
What?

Speaker 4 (05:56):
do you mean I can't you want me to write the check,
or not, are you?

Speaker 2 (05:59):
new.
Yeah, like they're going totake it back.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Who was the auction company?
If I can't ask Mecham, it wasMecham Just recently then, a few
weeks ago.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
The other, mecham.
Okay, and every year I have areunion.
I think she plans it that way.
I have a reunion the weekend ofthe auction.

Speaker 4 (06:23):
Anyway, it was so funny, but it didn't work
apparently.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
No, no no yeah, last year it was, didn't they have
two, last year no.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
No, that was probably another one in another city
that you went to.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
Yeah, they do.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Dallas.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Dallas is in the fall they do a beer at Jackson, and
they have wine at Bear Jacksontoo.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
They do, yeah, bear jackson too, they do yeah, yeah,
free sort of free wine, ifyou're a bitter, that's
registered yeah kind of like thecigarette girl back in the days
oh yeah, whatever she is, geezyeah, remember those, yeah, yeah
, I remember they give youcigarettes on the plane.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
If you ran out, correct those little four packs
of parliament I haven't heard ofthat in years.
Parliaments my parents smokedTerrytons.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
I smoked Terrytons, did you?
Yeah, rather than fight theswitch.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
And I love it.
You go to the gas station andyou ask for parliament lights
and he goes this parliamentlight, it's that one, this
parliament light.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Jeff, could you help me?
I am not saying what did you?

Speaker 3 (07:27):
say I am not saying it, he's not saying anything
Parliament Lights, parliamentLights.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Do they?

Speaker 1 (07:32):
actually still make parliaments?
I have no idea.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Wow, I told my doctor .
I said I think I'm going tostart smoking again.
He said what are you talkingabout?
I said I don't think it's gottime to kill me, exactly.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
The wine on the other hand I can outrun it, yeah the
wine on the other hand.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Oh man, when I was in the car, business smoke.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Oh, absolutely, four packs a day.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
That's where I honed my addiction to Kool's.
Oh my.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
God.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
I had Kool's.
My dad smoked Kool's, kool's,yeah, kool's.
At.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
Richardson.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Chevrolet yeah, that started it.
And look where we are today.
When did you quit?
I quit 20 years later afterthat job.
20 years later I quit.
That was in 1990, I think I was28 and I just cold quit.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Yeah Well, well, and I just cold quit.
Yeah well, well, that's a lie.
I used to keep a pack under theseat of my company car, my Nova
, with the matching hubcaps tothe paint.
Remember those, oh God.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
I'd drive it.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
I left them there.
It was a four-door with bucketseats.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Oh Lord.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, and the consoles.
I recall Anyway I had someunder the seat how I gave it up.
I gave up the tough ones first, like coffee.
I wouldn't have smoke while Iwas on the phone or in my car.
One morning I thought I'm goingto have one.
Well, they've been in thereabout six months.
The thing burned like a fusethat going to have one.

(09:04):
Well, they've been in thereabout six months.

Speaker 4 (09:06):
They burned like a fuse.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
Oh, that thing was nasty.
How did I ever do that all day?

Speaker 1 (09:10):
long like a fuse.
So let's go back to the carcollection okay, let's go back
so we've got this one.
We and the 55 I'm very familiarwith that had a.
It doesn't have power steering, but I think nobody lubricated
the steering system in it when Idrove it.
Uh, back in the day, that wasin 2007 and um and it was.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
It was a beast to once once the wheels start
rolling and like on this packard, if it's sitting still you can
hardly turn it a big steeringwheel, but as soon as the wheels
any motion at all.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
It's like power steering.

Speaker 1 (09:43):
So do we have any things that we can talk about?
How many cars do you have inthe collection now?
Have you counted them?
I have, is it 60?
There's actually a list.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
There is a real list so is it kind of like the old
mob books, where here's thebooks that she can look at and
here's the list that everybodyelse can look at.
Hers is a real short list.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
Who are those other?

Speaker 2 (10:09):
cars.
There's 51.
51, okay, yeah, no 52.
52.
I hadn't made the sheet yet.
It's a maintenance sheet, Iunderstand.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
So when are we going to have a place that we can show
the cars?
I mean, I know that they're allstuff.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
At the next Mecham auction Sheila's going to see
them all the.
Stan Holt collection.
The Stan Holt collection.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Because I was bragging about the white
Cadillac Coupe DeVille that youbought in Florida.
You still have that.
Still have it.
It's white, two-door, but itwhat year is it?
71.
It's a 71.
And it's got a green brocadeinterior.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yes, perfect, it's so bad, it's good.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Yeah, oh my God it's not just green.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
You remember Harvest Gold?
Yes, avocado Green, yeah, avocado Green, avocado Green
yeah, sort of matches therefrigerator it had shag carpet
but I took it out.
I put a loop on it.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
So here's the deal with the car.
Have you ever heard of aCadillac stripped car that has
no, there's no extra options onit at all.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
It has a.
What was it?

Speaker 1 (11:26):
A cigarette lighter Vinyl top.
Delete A vinyl.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
They came standard with a vinyl top.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
So the man ordered it delete that we don't want that
on there.
Well, he didn't want to pay forit.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Yeah, which is probably like 12 bucks back then
One of my favorite storiesabout that is that 55 Buick yeah
, it has an aftermarket like PepBoys cigarette lighter bolted
under the dash.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
No.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah, I said I'm not paying $8 for a damn cigarette
lighter, got a Pep Boys for $6.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
$6.
And so does it actually workoff of the ignition switch, or
is it just on all the time, Idon't know.
Huh, well, there's a thought.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
It does work.
I know that let's on the wayhome, get a pack of Terrytons.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
No, parliaments, parliaments.
We've got to go find thoseParliaments, parliaments lights
Non-filter.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Test it.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Research.
Remember at drugstores whenthey had the, you remember going
to nightclubs, cigarettemachines?
Yes, 50 cents, yep, amazing, another 50 cents apiece.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
Pretty much yes, when .

Speaker 2 (12:31):
I was in the service as soon as we got outside of
three miles Away from the base.
Well, we're going to VietnamOffshore.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
Oh, I see, okay.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
They were $1.10 a carton.
We weren't worried about theenemy.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Yeah, what was that?
The Can-Am?

Speaker 1 (12:49):
Yeah, but it looks like a highway car or something.
It's like a Range Rover.

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Shit about the car, I guess.
Anyway, anyway, the collection.
I'm going to start selling someof them because you just can't
drive them.
Full-time shop guy, you justcan't drive them.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Isn't that shop guy?
You just can't drive them Can'tyeah.
Isn't that truck over there forsale?
Isn't that yours, that's mine?
Yeah, you're starting already.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
Yep, I'm starting already.
I need to sell.
I'd like to sell about 10.
There's some I just can't partwith, even though I don't drive
them.
I'm building.
I'm actually building two carsright now.
Really, what are you building?
A 57 Ford Fairlane 300, twodoor post, a two door post car.

(13:32):
The 500's had the big fins andthey had the little fins on the
300.
It's a one owner car.
I didn't title it, I bought itat an auction and it's at Last
name's Broussard, seanBroussard's in Lafayette.
Beautiful, he finished theCadillac.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
I see.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
And so we're putting the LS version of a Ford motor
in that car, and it's going tobe titanium silver, which is a
lexus, uh really beautifulsilver with kind of a orangey
beige interior.
You know what I mean.
Like they put in the saddlesaddle.

(14:16):
Thank you, and I'll tell youthe coolest it's a four-door,
two-door.
it's a two-door.
Uh, I was gonna leave theoriginal engine in because it
was a.
That car came with a 292.
Okay, but it has a 312.
So somebody bought it wantingto go faster.
So they bought the cheaper carwith a Porsche with the biggest
motor.
So you can actually get twofour-barrels from Ford on that

(14:39):
car.
It doesn't have them.
Anyway, I decided, if we didthe LS here that I would do it.
But the coolest car she wasshaking her head.
I've tried to buy it for 10years.
It's a 55 Chevy station wagoncalled a Tradesman.
Aw, two-door post.

(15:02):
No, not like the Nomad with theswoopy pillar.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Right, no, it's, yeah , it's Newbom's Piwagon.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
That's it.
It's currently red and we sentit to.
It had been a race car, superStocker, but it was an old
ladder bar car with you know hada Ladder bars.
Yeah, I came here trying to getthat name Jericho four speed.
You know it has a clutch everyyear in India.
I tried to buy the car.

(15:32):
It went $60,000.
It's not happening, right, unless you got $20,000 in the
glove box not happening.
So I told Jared, go over andtell him we'll give him $44,000
at rolling.
I don't want the motor, thetransmission.
So I told Jared, go over andtell him we're giving him 44 at
rolling.
We don't want the motor, thetransmission, anything.
It had 265.
Well, I have a 283, that's justnew, really fast, and I have a

(15:56):
new Liberty 4-speed.
So if you run it in GT, you canrun a Liberty clutchless.
You leave with a clutch.
Yeah, so it's going to have the283.

Speaker 4 (16:04):
We sent it to you leave with a clutch.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Yeah, yeah.
So it's going to have the 283.
We sent it to a place calledPK's Racing Cars IN and he's
back half of the whole car.
He's doing the front suspension.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
He wrote so you're going to keep it a race car.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Oh, yeah, okay.
Now, it had nine-inch tires.
I've got a picture on my phoneof the axle he took out of it.
It's this wide.
The one he puts in it is thiswide.
Tubbed it.
Yeah, they're tubbing it andslamming it to the ground and

(16:39):
it's going to be a two-tonepaint job.
Where you know the big piece ofstainless steel that goes from
the headlight down to the bumper.
So we're going to do that andwe'll do one color above it and
another color below it.
It's really going to besomething.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
So back there, where the window would be in the panel
, that's back there, you'regoing to put Newbom's pie wagon
on it.
I'll have to do something abouttamales.
I'm pretty sure Newbom's tamalewagon.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
Do you remember in the movie the Jerk?
Yes, when he was working at thegas station?
Yes, and the three Mexican guysroll up in the lowered Chevy
and give him the credit card.
He goes.
Thank you, mrs Newsom, I'll beright back, that's hilarious.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
Anyway, stanton, it's always a pleasure to see you,
and thank you for inviting us tocome out here and do the
broadcast today.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
You're welcome.
We always enjoy it.
I'm looking forward.
I hope Judd comes so you caninterview him.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
I think that he's supposed to be here today and I
saw an interview that Sheilasent me that he did on his big
victory out at Long Beach, driving on the street.
It had to be I know, I can'teven imagine in a BMW, a BMW 4
Series.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
It looked bad to the bone.
It's a factory race car.
It's like a rocket ship.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
We're going to talk to him about it when he gets
here.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
That's really exciting.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
It's great to see you .
Hope we see you soon.
We're going to do the Hot RodTour of Texas this week.
Oh, really, it's actually thisyear.
We're going to come throughHouston.
When does it start?
It starts well.
Thursday night is the big eventdown in Victoria, down in the
town square, 300 cars, and thenwe make our way, uh, in the back

(18:27):
roads on the way up to houston,I think on uh, it says friday
starts friday, yeah, yeah.
And then friday, we're going towind up down by santa fe, I
think, and then saturday, um, Idon't know all.
I can't remember all of thestops, so what are you driving,
are you?

Speaker 2 (18:39):

Yeah, I haven't plotted it outroad to road, but I've got
segmented times of where they'llbe so since it's coming to
Houston.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
I would suggest, if you want to see the 300 in a
kind of cool parade, that youget a lawn chair and find a
place that we go real slowthrough.

That's my kind of hey, what areyou drinking?
I'm having some clear wine orsomething.
There you go.

Speaker 1 (24:27):
Some of the stories making automotive headlines this
week.
While auto tariffs and agrowing trade war between the US
and China have grabbed much ofthe world's attention, some
suppliers say the Trumpadministration's steel and
aluminum tariffs are the causeof their biggest worries.
Who knew?
25% tariffs cover the metalsthemselves and a list of
derivative products made offoreign steel and aluminum,

(24:51):
including many auto parts.
Importers must determine theforeign steel or aluminum
content in those products.
Then the value is taxed at 25%.
Calculating the number isdifficult and time-consuming, as
you can imagine.
Companies sometimes need todrill several layers deep into
their supply chains to figureout the source of steel or

(25:14):
aluminum in their products andhow much those metals are worth.
And another complication thelist of tariffed products is not
static.
It is expected to grow in thecoming months, so it's a very
complicated thing.
We've had many discussionssince all of this began and
we've talked to some expertsabout it, and the bottom line is

(25:35):
it's a very layered,complicated formula that they
put on tariff countries thatmake cars and they're being the

(25:57):
25% Now.
China is a whole other thing.
As a matter of fact, I amdriving and drove a Buick
recently.
It's made in China.
I think your car is made inChina.
Yeah, so that's 145% tariff ifit's not on the ground.

Speaker 3 (26:16):
It's on the south side of.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
China though South side, so there's a discount for
that.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (26:21):
Ford Motor Company has halted shipments of SUVs and
pickups and sports cars toChina in the wake of President
Trump's tariffs.
The Wall Street Journalreported Friday, citing people
familiar with the matter, thecompany this week halted
shipments of its F-150 Raptors,mustangs and Michigan-built
Bronco SUVs, as well asKentucky-made Lincoln Navigators
, to China.
China's retaliatory tariffs inresponse to US import taxes have

(26:45):
seen these vehicles face atariff as high as 150 percent.
It's a mess.
Ford also exports US-builtengines and transmissions to
China, which the report sayswill continue despite the pause
on exports of assembled vehicles.
Its Lincoln Nautilus model, which is manufactured in China,
is also expected to havecontinued shipments despite

(27:08):
heavy tariffs, the report added.
So I don't know whether thecompany is going to suck up all
of that and keep the price thesame, or are they going to try
to pass it through?
I can't imagine they'd pass a145% tariff through.

Speaker 3 (27:21):
They're going to try.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
But I would imagine that they're going to try.
And finally, honda MotorCompany is considering switching
some car production from Mexicoand Canada to the US, aiming
for 90% of cars sold in thecountry to be made locally in
response to the new tariffs.
In the weeks before the new USlevy went into effect, reuters
had already reported that Hondaplans to make its

(27:44):
next-generation Civic Hybrid inIndiana instead of Mexico to
avoid potential tariffs.
Us was Honda's biggest marketlast year, accounting for nearly
40% of global sales.
Automaker sold 1.4 millionvehicles, including Acura models
, in the US last year.
It imported about two-fifths ofthose cars from Canada or
Mexico.

We've got to get participants in here.
Well, you know, I'm not worriedabout it.

(31:00):
Mr Mars is out gallivantingaround.
He's, I think, what is thedefinition of gallivanting.

Speaker 3 (31:06):
Just randomly going, but he's at the kissing booth.
I think he's sitting at thekissing booth, good God.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
Gross.
That is disgusting.

Speaker 3 (31:15):
He's got lipstick on his neck.
There you go.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
Oh, we're not paying any attention to him, so I've
got some recalls to tell youabout.

Speaker 3 (31:22):
Hey, did you come out of the?

Speaker 1 (31:24):
kissing booth.
Mars, you came out of thekissing booth.
Did you set up the kissingbooth?
Okay, well whatever.

Speaker 3 (31:29):
The dunking booth.

Speaker 1 (31:31):
Okay, so I think every 2021 Audi known to man is
being recalled because theinstrument panel display may
fail.
So if you have a 2021 Audi ofany kind, what about?
an any An any An Audi, an anyGot it.
Ford Motor Company recalling148,266.1 vehicles as part of a

(31:53):
two US recalls.
Let's see recalls.
Let's see.
First one 123,000 may see lossof brake function due to brake
fluid leak.
The second one is 224,000.
655 vehicles that potentiallyhave a software issue that could
lead to a loss of drive power,in other words, the motor quits.

(32:16):
So there's that Recallinvolving a software issue that
could lead to a loss of drivepower, in other words, the motor
quits.
So there's that recallinvolving the software issue.
2025 ford explorer.
And the other one is the mastercylinder that I told you about.
Also, a rear view camera imagemay not display Porsche Macan
Electric 24-25.

(32:39):
Occupant classification may turnoff the airbag.
Porsche Taycan 2022-23.
And the Audi again.
Another Audi Rear-view cameramay show blurry image, of course
.
I guess it depends on how muchyou've had to drink.
I was thinking the same thingthe Audi Q6 e-tron and the Audi
SQ6 e-tron for 2025.
I don't even know what thoseare.

(33:00):
It's the electric one, is it?
I guess?
I don't know the e-tron.
You would think so yeah theelectric one, but I was thinking
it had something to do with amovie.
No, that's Tron.
Okay, just wanted to make sure.
Well, mr Mars, did you findsomebody to talk to?
Yeah, I did.
Or are we going to just talk toyou?
No, let's talk to Mike.

Speaker 4 (33:19):
We were going to talk to Christine, but Christine was
following me, and now Christine, finally, is going to come back
over here.

Speaker 3 (33:26):
Where is she?

Speaker 4 (33:27):
Well, she's over there and he's over here.

Speaker 1 (33:29):
At the kissing booth.
Okay, well, you have twochristine's no, just one,
christine I see this is the guythat drives christine oh, this
is the christine guy.
Okay, I get you.

Speaker 4 (33:41):
I understand now christine christine, christine,
the car christine the car, the1958 fury, like it's on point,
you got to put that headset onbelieve it or not yeah otherwise
nobody will be able to hear youon this broadcast and this is
trey cider how you guys doinggood your last name is cider

(34:02):
cider yes

Speaker 5 (34:03):
t site tur, tur site tur site tur, not like the juice
.

Speaker 1 (34:09):
Okay well, I was gonna go there, but since mr
mars annunciation fromneederville see what you were
doing.

Speaker 4 (34:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (34:16):
Thank you for correcting me.
Well, trey.
It's a pleasure to meet you, a58 Fury, plymouth, fury.

Speaker 5 (34:21):
Yes, sir, pleasure to be here, thanks.

Speaker 1 (34:25):
You know I've seen that car around you go to lots
of car events.

Speaker 5 (34:29):
Yeah, this is the first one I've been to, probably
in about six or seven months.
Um, this is the first one I'vebeen to, probably in about six
or seven months, but uh, butyeah, it's been around.
I've had it since 2007 and, uh,restoration took about four
years.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
Uh, so it's been restored since the beginning of
2012.
What, what was it?
What was it Something differentother than the Plymouth Fury
beforehand and a special trimlevel?
Or was it?
Did you get it off of aracetrack or out of a junkyard?

Speaker 5 (34:55):
I found I was looking in Hemings Motor News back in
the day and I was looking for a57 or 58.
I wanted to convert it into acar like the movie, so always
wanted it.
So I found one in Long Beachand it was in pieces but it was
at a body shop and it came fromVentura, california, so it had
no rust on it, all the floorpans were good and and it had a

(35:18):
392 hemi in it which those carsdidn't have.
Um, that only the 300s, the newyorkers and the imperials back
then had those motors.
So I don't know, somebody mayhave put it in, or maybe it was
a the uh, the guy that owned thebody shop said it.
It uh the owner of thedealership, like where the car
came from, that he owned thatcar.

(35:39):
So maybe he may have swapped itout or did some kind of special
option.

Speaker 4 (35:44):
It's got the old Chrysler Firepower valve covers
on it.
It doesn't say Hemi, becausethat's what they called it
before they actually startedusing the Hemi brand name.
That's what caught my attention, because I'd never seen one in
the live world I don't believe Ihave either yeah, it's, it's a
pretty cool what kind oftransmissions you got in it.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
Um, it's got the uh, uh torque flight, three speed
torque flight and it's theoriginal cast iron.
It's you, it's uh.
Back then it was impossible tomodify like an aluminum
transmission on that motor.
Now they have kits for it, butit's still.

Speaker 1 (36:19):
Oh God, don't change it.

Speaker 5 (36:20):
Yeah, I did, I'm not.
It runs great, can you?

Speaker 1 (36:23):
imagine taking it to a transmission shop.
Hey, could you change thetransmission fluid and put a new
filter in it?
For me, we don't even know whatthat is.

Speaker 5 (36:34):
What is that?
Yeah, yeah, the guy thatrestored it.
He maintains it as well.
He's a really good friend ofmine and he did all the paint
work, the mechanical, everythingon it.
He did a really good job.
I mean, it's won best in classat autorama seven different

(36:55):
times, so it's I've and I meanwhat class does it, does it fall
?
In uh, 50, it's 50s umconservative hardtop.
It's not 50s original becauseit's got the motor, the
different motor, yeah theinterior.

Speaker 4 (37:10):
Is that?
The interior dom would findthis real interesting, but is
that the original type ofinterior?

Speaker 5 (37:15):
Yes, yeah, so SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon.
You know they closed theirdoors and I'm sorry.
Sms Auto Fabrics bought all ofthe old auto fabrics from
Chrysler when they closed one oftheir interior factories and
they had all these old rolls sothey bought all the rolls.

(37:35):
So that roll of, so that rollof fabric is actually kind of
like a houndstooth, isn't it?

Speaker 4 (37:39):
I mean, it's kind of what it looks like.
It's like a brown.

Speaker 5 (37:41):
Look at it brown with a gold flake in it, yeah, and
then the kind of off-white vinylinterior.
It's fury interior, yeah.

Speaker 1 (37:50):
So I, I, I just I think that's fascinating and
it's a, it's a great looking car.
How does it drive?

Speaker 5 (37:58):
It's great, it just floats, it, floats.

Speaker 1 (38:01):
So does it.
It's got the automatictransmission and it doesn't have
drum brakes in it.

Speaker 5 (38:06):
Um.
I changed the front brakes todisc rear steel drum yeah.
It just it made all I the drumbrakes for for that car, finding
drums that aren't warped andthey don't.
They don't make make themanymore.
So you know I I went throughfour or five different brake
drums and they were all werewarped.
So I was like you know what?

(38:27):
There was a disc brake kit thata company made up north
northeast somewhere.
So I told my guy, just just putdisc brakes on it.
I'm glad I did.
Yeah, they're not power, butyou know it does still better it
still works a lot better.

Speaker 1 (38:40):
Yeah is that power steering?

Speaker 5 (38:41):
no, no, as though you know back in the day yeah, just
the big steering wheel yeahback in the day.

Speaker 1 (38:46):
Well, stan was talking about the 55, well, and
the 41 here.
Yeah, the uh the packard.
No power steering, and powersteering was really a kind of a
50s kind of thing when itstarted really getting a
foothold.
And I'll tell you what manthose big cars, as Stan said,
once you get rolling.

Speaker 5 (39:06):
it's not that big of a deal, yeah, but when you're
pulling into a parking lot youalmost have to be in shape to
park the thing.

Speaker 1 (39:16):
Yeah, I'll tell you and clearly you are, he doesn't
go to the gym.

Speaker 4 (39:21):
He just goes for driving around.

Speaker 5 (39:22):
Yeah, I just drive it around.
It's my steering workout.

Speaker 1 (39:26):
So what is your everyday driver?
Just out of curiosity.

Speaker 5 (39:29):
I have a 2007 Dodge 3500 Dually.
I have a constructionremodeling company, so that's my
daily driver.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
Interesting and a diesel?
Yeah, it's a diesel, and haveyou had any problems with it?
I have to ask these questionsbecause I just find it
fascinating.
Here's a guy that has a reallycool car that pretty much stays
in the garage unless it comes toan event like this, or shows it
.
So what do you drive every day?

Speaker 4 (40:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
Somebody would ask you what you drive every day
Mars.

Speaker 4 (40:08):
I would tell them my truck yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:10):
What year is your truck?
It's a 2015.
A 2015.

Speaker 4 (40:15):
Yeah, I was just talking to the guy that's going
to join us here in a littlewhile about.
You know, it's really nice tosay we're going to get a panel
van and we're going to paint itup and it's going to be a 47
ford or whatever.
But we put our gear in it andthursday we head to victoria and
it breaks, what do you do?
You know?
So we, we still drive somethingfairly late model yeah, yeah,
yeah, no, yeah, no, I get it.

Speaker 1 (40:35):
Well, do you have a list of events that you go to
throughout the year?

Speaker 5 (40:41):
It's random.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
It is.

Speaker 5 (40:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:44):
Have you been here before with that car?

Speaker 5 (40:46):
A couple times, have you?
Yeah, it's probably been a year, I guess, yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:52):
How did you find out about this event?
Through the In Wheel Time CarTalk Show, probably, I guess.
Yeah, yeah, how did you findout about this event?
Um?
Through the in-wheel time cartalk show?

Speaker 4 (40:57):
probably that's the answer.

Speaker 5 (40:58):
See right here yeah I answered it for you, you know
I'm good friends with stan andjudd.
Are you as well?
I'm so sorry yeah that makestwo yeah

Speaker 1 (41:07):
two friends exactly.
Well, um, it's, it's great totalk to you and, uh, I, uh, I, I
could sit to talk to you and Icould sit here and talk to you
about every aspect of that car.
Yeah, there's some good storiesbehind it, and it took four
years to put it together becauseyou bought it in pieces.

Speaker 5 (41:28):
I mean it was all together.
It was missing a bunch of trimpieces so I had to.
When I bought it I had itshipped to a guy in Redding
California who was recommendedand kind of.
You know the nightmarerestoration story.
He worked on it for about ayear and a half and went broke
and so I had it shipped backhere and that's when Peter, my

(41:51):
buddy, he restored it from thereBecause those trim pieces are
stainless steel, are they not?
uh, some are pop metal, some arestainless steel, um and uh,
some are anodized aluminum, likethe.
Like, the waffle trim on theside is all anodized, the grills
anodized, um, so so yeah it's.
I had to fly to Sacramento, rent a car and drive to there

(42:16):
was this really huge scrapyardin Anderson, california.
While it was in California, Iwould fly there about once every
four or five months and I'd goto the scrapyard and get Dig
through the.
Yeah, it was full of late 50sChryslers, really yeah, it was

(42:37):
all 50s Buicks and 50s Chryslerproducts.
Huge scrapyard.
It was pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (42:45):
Well, you know I'm sure that you've watched it the
television show that the guygoes through all the junkyards
and picks out cars and tells youabout the car and what it would
cost in today's the car, yeah, and what and what it would cost
and to, in today's terms, offixing it up and that sort of
stuff.
Most of these are beyond repairbut uh, it's truly the.
The history of it all is trulyamazing.

(43:06):
When you go to a junkyard Ihaven't been to a junkyard in
years, yeah and uh and to go andvisit it's kind of like going
to a cemetery it is.

Speaker 5 (43:15):
Yeah, it's kind of e going to a cemetery, it is.

Speaker 1 (43:16):
Yeah, it's kind of eerie, but it's cool it is Until
you see the car that somebodyclearly died in.
There's no way they couldsurvive.

Speaker 5 (43:23):
And then you go ooh yeah.

Speaker 1 (43:25):
But the back half of the car is still good and people
pick and choose what they wantoff the car.
The junkyard business is amystery to me.

Speaker 5 (43:33):
Yeah, off the car it's a the junkyard business is
a mystery to me.
Yeah, yeah, the, the guy thatowned the junkyard, and and, uh
and anderson, he was a, he was aunique fellow, he was well, you
have to be the junkyard he wasin the 60s and you know he just
he had the you know big facialhair.
He just he was about six footsix and and rail thin and he had
his constant runny nose.

Speaker 1 (43:56):
Oh.

Speaker 5 (43:56):
God, every time I'd go see him, his nose was always
running.

Speaker 1 (43:57):
He was growing cocaine bushes out there around
back His nose was always running.

Speaker 5 (44:01):
Yeah, lord.

Speaker 1 (44:04):
Well, at any rate, hey, thanks for stopping by.

Speaker 5 (44:07):

Speaker 3 (47:14):
Okay, you got the Easter Bunny just arrived.

Speaker 1 (47:17):
Oh, it's not even a scary one either.
No, that's good.

Speaker 3 (47:20):
He's getting ready for Easter tomorrow at 420.
Then you know he'll be ready.

Speaker 1 (47:24):
Yeah, very nice, all right.
So time now for this hour's carreview.
I had the opportunity to drivethe 2025 Toyota Corolla.
You know I don't get too manyCorollas.
I don't get, you know, theentry-level car.
This is it.
Well, kind of so.
Final assembly location forthis is Blue Springs,

(47:47):
mississippi.
All right, I have actually beento that plant and I've seen
them stamp the sheet metal inthat plant and then assemble the
entire vehicle and see it rollout the other end within a day.
Anyway, available trim levelsare LE, se, fx and XSE.

(48:08):
I have the FX, which is onenotch below the top of the line
Compact sedan seats, five people, redesigned in 2018.
You know, toyota doesn't do alot of redesigns on a very
popular and successful car.
This is one of them.
So you think, well, it'sgetting long in the tooth.
No, they've had updates and itreally does look good.

(48:29):
Attractive front fascia withlarge open-mouth grille.
Very modern looking Sleekfastback roof design Cheats the
wind.
Unremarkable rear fascia.
These cars all look the samethese days.
I mean, what happened to thefins Wheels determined by the
trim level, but they're all goodlooking.

(48:50):
They don't have hubcaps andwheel covers anymore.
They're all aluminum wheels.
What could use improvement.
Like I said, the overall designis getting a little long in the
tooth.
Like I said, it has also beenupdated, so the car looks fresh
and it looks new.
Interior highlights Contemporarydash design with simple and

(49:14):
easy-to-use controls.
We have the optional 10.5-inchscreen with simple functions.
Cloth seats seem rugged andcomfy.
Rear legroom is tight but it isa compact car.
It's acceptable in the backseat in this small sedan.
Trunk room is adequatePass-through rear seat.

(49:36):
What I liked the way it fits.
It fits.
What could use improvement?
The noise can be intrusive onthe highway with that droning
engine, but it's a little bittyfour-cylinder engine and it does
get a little noisy and rumbly.
But remember, this is kind ofan entry-level car.
Two-liter, four-cylinder, 169horsepower, 151 pound-feet of

(50:00):
torque Through a CVTtransmission.
It is a front-wheel drive car.
31 miles per gallon, cityHighway 39.
Wow, combined 34.
I got 33.4 miles per gallonover 429.5 miles.
What I liked about it clearlyis the mileage.
What could use improvement?

(50:20):
The CVT transmission does get alittle bothersome at times.
Oh, thank you very much.
Is that for me?
Okay?
Well, I'll have a sip as soonas Boy, that's a really.
What is that?
What is that?

Speaker 3 (50:37):
That's the yellow Daytona.
That's the Daytona.

Speaker 1 (50:43):
We just had him on as a guest.
Wow, that's a reallycool-looking car.
You have to put a headset onfor us to hear you there, Mr
Morris.

Speaker 4 (50:51):
David's got to turn me on.
It's a little early in themorning, David.

Speaker 1 (50:55):
I've heard these things about you before.
What I liked about the ride andhandling it's a comfortable,
easy ride.
What gives you improvement?
This is not a corner carver,it's a Toyota Corolla.
You're not going to race thecar.
It's a Corolla carver.
It's a Corolla carver.
So don't think that this isgoing to be some sort of

(51:17):
high-performance car.
This is not.
Base trim price was $26,500.
Prices tested was $30,000.
Base trim price was $26,500.
Prices tested was $30,000.
The base model price, which waskind of surprising $22,325 for
the base model Toyota Corolla.
No, it's not.
So the competitors?
Clearly the Honda Civic.
It starts at $25,550.

(51:38):
The Hyundai Elantra starts at$23,575.
And then its direct competitor, the Nissan Sentra, is 22, 290.
What about the Buick Invista?
That is not a competitor, butit could be.
You could call it that I'mgoing to.

Speaker 4 (51:56):
Over the years we've had a couple of Corollas in the
family, the kids buying smallback when they were small cars,
and they still have them, andthey're a million miles.
No, not yet, but we did teachone of them.
That's how they learned todrive a manual transmission.
It was a four-cylinder with afour-speed in it.

Speaker 1 (52:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (52:12):
And she picked it out .
She couldn't drive it, but shesaid that's the one I want.

Speaker 1 (52:15):
Well, you know, that's like Katie's Ford Focus
with the five-speed manualtransmission in it.
Black standard, I mean, there'snothing.
Crank windows, crank windows init.
Two-door, black Beige clothinterior.
Hey, you know.
Hey, she still has it and won'tget rid of it.

(52:35):
She just bought a brand-newTesla.
Can I say that?
On the air?
I think so.

Speaker 4 (52:39):
Okay, she hasn't got anybody to paint at her or
anything.

Speaker 1 (52:43):
No, not yet.
I don't think she hangs out incrowds like that anymore, but
anyway, all right.
So that's the review of theToyota Corolla.
Jeff has the Motor Minute.
All right, here we go.

Speaker 3 (52:55):
Well, guess who won the first NHRA title in his
career.
Mr Tony Stewart did that at thefour wide nationals in Las
Vegas.
Yeah, that's pretty cool yeahyeah, yep, put him behind the
wheel and there's nothing.
Really, he can't drive.
Tony's, the ultimate iron manof motorsports, smoke, just
earned his first win in nhra topfuel four wide, las vegas.
Not only did smoke win, but hedid it at four wide.

(53:18):
Like we just said, he is thehusband of the wife, leah pruitt
.
They decided to start a family,so she got out of the car, he
got, got in it, he did all histesting and he's doing very well
at it.
So congrats to Tony.
He did a 317.42 mile per hourrun and he took it all.
So it was step by step and hegot it done.
There you go, by the way, youknow the Easter Bunny is here.

Speaker 1 (53:42):
Easter Bunny, we're going to get him on the air.

Speaker 3 (53:43):
He's right out there.
We're going to get him on theair.

Speaker 1 (53:44):
Does he talk?

Speaker 4 (53:45):
I don't know.
We'll go find out Well that'sokay.

Speaker 1 (53:47):
We don't have to have him on right now.
There's another Easter Bunnysitting right there.
Yep, yep, I did want to.
I did have a couple of thingsthat I have decided to put
together for us today, which oneis that.

Speaker 3 (54:07):
Do I have it?
No, I have it, no, no you havenothing, okay.

Speaker 1 (54:11):
Clearly, this is the time of year when many parents
are thinking about buying a usedvehicle for their teen drivers.
The vehicle may be a graduationgift or a needed set of wheels
for a summer job or trip tocollege.
These days, suvs are a commonchoice because of their sales
popularity.
But which one to get?
Edmunds Auto Experts rounded upfive used SUV recommendations

(54:33):
for your teen driver and Ithought I'd bring them to you.
Last Generation Equinox is thetop compact SUV value.
It's affordably priced and hasroomy seating, a smooth ride and
useful tech features.
Standard teen driver feature, for example, can remind young
drivers to buckle up, and itlimits stereo volume and lets

(54:53):
parents monitor their drivinghabits something I'm sure that
they're looking forward to Lookfor.
Picking up an Equinox is prettyeasy, because it didn't change
much from 2018 to 2024.
A lot of Equinox inventory topick from too.
Consider a 2019 and later modelto get newer infotainment
system.
The pricing is somewherebetween $14,000 and $20,000.

(55:16):
Oh my God.
I hope that everybody can seethat thing, Marz is over here,
splayed out on an iron horse.
Sporty pick is the Mazda CX-5.
Lively, handling, high-qualityinterior make the CX-5 a fun,
compact SUV.
And while sporty performanceisn't a priority for most

(55:38):
parents, going with the CX-5will neatly circumvent any
complaints about an SUV beingboring to drive, and that it is
not, and I can vouch for that.
Other high points includeexcellent crash test safety
ratings and a high predictedRepairPal reliability score,
pricing Somewhere between$16,000 and $20,000.
Pretty good, is your teen anoutdoorsy type?

(56:01):
Now say what you will aboutthis vehicle, and I have a pilot
that has informed me of anothername for Subaru.
Oh, I'm not going to go there.
I'm not going to go there.
The type of driver is, you know.

Speaker 4 (56:25):
It's a special type of driver.

Speaker 1 (56:26):
Well, yes, different, let me put it that way Standard
, all-wheel drive, sure-footedtraction, tall ground clearance.
Lets it go places sportier SUVscan't While its lower roof
height makes it easy for cargoloading, the Outback gets
excellent safety scores and it'sredesigned it for 2020.

(56:47):
But we think an older outbackis just as good.
This is from edmunds and itgoes between 15 and 20 thousand
dollars and, uh, you know, Iwould imagine that our buddies
down at emmons emmonsons Motorsdown there in Friendswood would
be a place to check it out.

(57:09):
Here's another one.
Teen driver needs a largerthree-row SUV.
How about a Toyota Highlander?
Consider an older Highlander, though the third row isn't
palatial, but it is handy enoughfor a teen who might need to
shuttle siblings around.
Third row also folds down tocreate ample cargo space.
Very reliable, according toRepairPal.

(57:30):
Four-cylinder engine.
They do have a V6 available inolder ones.
2015 to 2016 Highlander goessomewhere between $16,000 and
$20,000.
How about a Jeep Wrangler?
What kid doesn't want a JeepWrangler?
Two-door, four-door versions.
Young drivers will likely enjoya more personal vibe of the
two-door, regardless of type.
The Sport or Sport S trimsoffer the best combination of

(57:53):
features, fun and frugality.
15 to 16 model year Wranglerpricing is somewhere between
$17,000 and $20,000.
Those are just somerecommendations that Edmunds had
that I found that I thought I'dpass along because it is that
time of the year graduation, gifts, etc, etc.
Birthdays I got Katie's car onher 16th birthday.

(58:14):
