We always need more.
Jeff zekin, I'm don armstrong, glad you could join us on this
hot Saturday.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
He's sleeping in.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Oh, David.
Ainsley is sleeping in thismorning.
He did a fantastic job ofbailing my butt out when my
computer crashed and burned lastweek.
It's always good to see David.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
It is, he's a nice guy.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
He's a smart man?
Yes, very much so.
And yeah, so if you hadn'theard the story last week's
remote that we had up at theLone Star Street Ride
Association State Run inGranbury, I got up early because
I hadn't finished everything.
I'd been on vacation the weekbefore and I was going to get on

(01:22):
the Internet and get somestories and work on my car
review and that sort of stuff.
So I had to get on the hotelhotspot, the public Wi-Fi.
Well, guess what happened?
It got some sort of a littlehiccup, Got a little infection,
Got a little infection in it andwhen I went to power it up,
when we got there at the remote,it would not power up.
David says give me that.

(01:44):
What have you done, Don?
What have you done, Don?

Speaker 3 (01:46):
What have you done, Don?

Speaker 1 (01:48):
David, I didn't do anything on purpose.
I just went to the hotelhotspot, I just did it.
I just did it and it's stilltrying to recover and it never
will.
So I have gotten myself a newcomputer coming that it will be
locked down and be so clean thatnobody will ever know that

(02:08):
there's anything other than thein-wheel time car talk show
stuff on there.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
He reached in his bag of pixie dust and sprinkled it
like what's the Disney characterTinkerbell.
Yeah, that's it, Tinkerbellpixie dust.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
I like that.
I could see me being Tinkerbellfor a very short while.
A lot of people.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Can I know?

Speaker 1 (02:33):
No, they can't, All right.
So joining us now is themanaging director of Camping Car
, mr Steve Moore.
Steve, good morning, hi, goodmorning to you.
Wow, you sound great man andthanks so much for joining us.
Modular camping furniture totransform my vehicle into a

(02:53):
comfortable home on wheels, youknow that's the goal, yeah well,
I'll tell you this that youknow rent mortgage payments.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
They're high and I'm thinking thinking, I think maybe
this is a future for me yeah, alot of people are feeling that
way where you know some of them, you know, are doing it just
because it is, um, you know, just like a new way to be, in a
lot of ways at least, embracingwhat maybe is an old way to be
in a new way for a lot of peopleis, like you know, being
nomadic, not being tied to aspecific spot all the time and

(03:25):
embracing kind of like theflexibility that that lifestyle
whether it's a lifestyle you'reembracing full time or a new way
you want to travel has a lot ofpotential to be, you know,
really enjoyable and utilitariantoo.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Well, steve, I have to tell you that when Mr Mars
told me that you were coming onthe show and told me what you
were here to talk about, all Icould think of was I think it
was the Nash Rambler or one ofthose cars from the 50s, okay,
where the back seat folded downand it married up with the back
of the front seat yeah, thepassenger seat and you could

(04:00):
make it into a bed.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
You've got to bring that back more with cars.
There's not enough of them thatcan do that these days.
That's why there's products now.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Except with a dad with daughters and the comeback
of drive-in movies.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
I'm going population increases, maybe not so much in
that category.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah, yeah, fair enough.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
So, Steve, let's talk about the things that Camping
Car does.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Oh man, there's a lot of things we do.
I mean, first of all, you know, kind of what you touched on is
there's a sort of furniture kitthat we offer, multiple
furniture kits coming out withnew ones, you know, in July,
probably this summer, where youbasically can buy something from
us that helps, know, turn yourcar into a more comfortable
sleeping kind of organization, camping arrangement, you know

(04:48):
elevated bed platforms with thekind of modular features, you
know sort of shelving units, things like that.
People can buy that from us andthey can, you know, throw it in
their minivan or their suv orvan or truck bed or whatever and
kind of organize it a littlebetter for camping.
And then, um, you know, we're abit on a different end of the
country, uh, here in washingtonstate, but we we do a.

(05:11):
We have a shop like a fullservice conversion shop where we
do everything from full fancyvan builds and mercedes
sprinters to small car camperkind of custom conversions and
just a wide variety of vehiclesand trailers and you name it.
You know people, we convert ahonda fit into a camper one time
.
There's just so many ways thatyou can make it happen and we're

(05:33):
kind of there to ask.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Sorry, yeah, I, we have to ask you.
Do you, do you happen to knowthe lilienthals?

Speaker 3 (05:44):
No, I don't.
Oh my God.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
They're up in your end of the country.

Speaker 4 (05:49):
They're in Oregon though.
They're close.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Just a hop skip and a junk.
And these folks of ours, we'regoing to hook you up.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Because the.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Lilienthal.
They're world travelers intheir Pajero.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
They sold the Pajero.
They sold the Pajero.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
They sold the Pajero, one of them.
They just did the Alcon 5000.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Yeah, and they're into what you got going on there
, and so we need to get you guystogether.
There's no doubt about that.
So, the Lilienthals what is thename of their website for?

Speaker 2 (06:21):
us Crank Shaft Culture.
Crank Shaft Culture, write thatdown.
Crankshaft Culture.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
Crankshaft Culture.
Okay, and when you write them, tell them that we hooked you
guys up together because thishas got you all need to be
married, yep, at any rate.
So let's continue on.
Okay, so I have this vision.
Sure, continue on.
Okay, so I have this vision, and that is that I've got a I

(06:47):
don't know six seven-year-oldSUV.
I don't want to go, I don'twant to pull a trailer.
I don't want to do the campingthing.
I don't want to do the campingthing.
I don't want to sleep on an airmattress and get cold at night
and hot during the day.
Set up a tent.
Yeah, I don't want to do allthat.
But I'm interested in somehowgetting something to attach to

(07:08):
the hatch on my SUV and make itinto kind of like a tent, if you
will, but it's also attached tomy car.
You got something like that tohelp me out.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Something external, yes, or in the car, Okay.
So we don't sell like theexternal, like tents and stuff
Okay, but we definitely installthem for people.
And there's a I mean there is aton of rooftop tents out there

(07:40):
in the world that like are kindof come up with builds that
sometimes like go really nicelyhand in hand with their rooftop
tents, Because, yeah, they'rereally like a cool kind of
convenient way to sort of havethat camping tent experience,
but it takes like a coupleminutes to get it going.
It's on the roof of your car,You're like nice and elevated,
so that's definitely an option.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Let me ask you, let me ask you, so Don's case, he's
got his six or seven year oldsuv, yeah, and and being the, he
doesn't even want to pay for amotel six, so he wants to go
across country and he's lookingfor a way to sleep in his car.
Doesn't want to do the wholetent thing, but he wants to be
comfortable sleeping in his car, right, sure?

Speaker 1 (08:23):
so yeah, so come on, hook me up, tell me what I need.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
Steve Right, well, depending on the SUV you have,
we might have a platform bed orsomething like that.
That would work really well foryou.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Well, I'm thinking about my Cadillac Escalade.
Okay, I just said it, aCadillac.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Oh, that's a big SUV, thank you.
You've got space in that thingyeah.
We could hook you up with atrunk bunk probably A trunk bunk
with four families.
That's right.
That's a product that you have.
That is a product that we have.
Yeah, it's a nice elevatedsleeping platform that has a
cool expanding contractionfeature so like you can make it
wider or narrower depending onkind of how much stuff you have

(09:03):
back there.
Let's say you've got severalsuitcases alongside your bed.
Like you can make it anappropriate width for that, and
then you just gotta throw thatin the back of your car.
You know, maybe secure it downa little more and you can be on
your way.
You got room underneath theplatform to store stuff and, um,
yeah, you're, you're hotel freeat that point now what about?

Speaker 1 (09:23):
what about chairs at the campsite?

Speaker 3 (09:26):
oh, I mean, I don't have a chair for you that we
make personally, but there are alot of really cool like small
camp chairs you can buy thesedays, it'll fit nicely within
the whole thing, Okay?

Speaker 1 (09:36):
well, I'm going to drill you down now, and so you
tell me what you have to offerme.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
What I've got for you .
Yes, I don't have a chair, I'msorry.
No, I know.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Okay well, let's we understand that, but what do you
have?

Speaker 3 (09:50):
yeah, we got the trunk, we got some shelving
units that might work nicely foryou if you need something to
put, like you know, your bookson, or you got like little.
You want homey in there, right?
You don't want it to be like atotal Spartan thing, so you want
some nice hominess and, depending on whether you're
coming to us or we're sendingstuff to you, we we can do just

(10:11):
about anything.
We can put a toilet in there ifyou want us to.

Speaker 4 (10:14):
Really.
So he's got a bed inside hisSUV, but he needs a place to eat
, like a table, sure, yeah, likea steering wheel table.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
We can build a table in there for you.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
A steering wheel table.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Oh yeah, the steering wheel table.
We could throw one of thoseyour way.
Yeah, oh yeah, the steeringwheel table, we could, we could
throw one of those your way.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, and those are.
And now we gotta have somepower.
Yeah, yeah, I would recommendgetting something like a bluetti
or a jackery or a goal zerocharging station.
Yeah, you can.
You can get like one of thoselittle flexible solar panels and
stick that outside during theday while you're camping and

(10:49):
charge that up or charge it withyour 12-volt outlet in the car,
and then you've got plenty ofpower for your phone and
whatever else you might need.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Now you know we get a lot of rain.
With the rain comes the bugs.
What do you got for that?

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Oh yeah, that's a great question, especially
considering you might be alittle hot where you're at in
Texas.
You think You've got rain andbugs and heat all at the same
time, and so things like thereare these mesh covers you can
put on your windows when yourwindows are rolled down at night
, so you've got airflow in yourcar.
So you don't want to have yourwindows open because there's

(11:26):
bugs, but you don't want to havethem closed because it's hot.
So there are these mesh coversyou can put over the windows
that work really well, that kindof allow airflow but prevent
things from coming in now wegotta have a car fan yeah, you
gotta have a car fan.
You plug that in your little 12volt power system.
That's going to help move theair around as well.

(11:47):
I mean, ac is nice but you knowthat's pretty power intensive
and uh pretty expensive to havein a true off-grid sense.

Speaker 4 (11:55):
So moving air around is the second best bet, for sure
well, will that jackery or theblue eddie you were talking
about?
Would that run don's blow dryerfor his hair?

Speaker 3 (12:04):
it might.
Yeah, probably as long as youget one with a big enough
inverter, you know.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Have you seen the size of his head?

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yeah, it's big.
Now I've got to have me alittle fridge, and ICE just
ain't going to cut it for me allthe time.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Yeah, there's a lot of good little portable fridges
out there these days.
You know a lot of chest fridgestyle.
They're like little coolers butthey got, you know know, like
controlled temperature controlset and you can actually turn
them to freezers too.
So if you're like really intohunting or fishing and you don't
want to, you want to have youryour game on ice or you want to
freeze it for a long drive home, then um, yeah, you've got like

(12:44):
a you know from dometic or umset power.
They've got all these coollittle like fridges these days
that you can plug into yourbattery system and those will
keep anything cold for hours.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
Nice.
Now let's talk about campfire.
Sure, it can be dangerous, butit can also be tons of fun.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
That's right.
Yeah, You've got to be carefulwith campfire.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
What would you recommend in that regard?

Speaker 3 (13:11):
I mean for the average person.
When it comes to campfire, justdo it in a designated pit, or
they've got these portablecampfire pits.
When I was living out of my carin Alaska, I had a little
portable campfire pit that waslike a fold-out metal thing.
Was like a fold-out metal thingand you could stick it anywhere

(13:34):
and you're keeping your firecontained off the ground.
It was pretty sweet.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Well, you know, all I can think of, especially right
now, is breakfast, and I'mthinking I don't want to get
some big, huge campfire just formy bacon and eggs.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
You've never tried to roast an egg on a stick over a
campfire.
No, no not not yet that's agood, that's a good way to break
a yoke, I guess, I guess itreally depends on my mood, from
what I've ingested the nightbefore, you know yeah, sure,
yeah, absolutely you can get oneof those like coleman, you know
propane stoves, that's kind ofthat's the.

(14:08):
That's the best bet for mostpeople, but you can also go
fancier with it if you want.
We've installed some, you know, induction cook tops in vans
before and things like that.
Someone's like I don't want todeal with propane.
Give me that sweet electrical.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Yeah, it puts a certain kind of outdoorsy taste
on the meat.

Speaker 4 (14:31):
Yeah, absolutely so.
That's a question what kind ofvehicle do you see the most of
using these kind of products?

Speaker 3 (14:39):
We see, yeah, a lot of larger suvs and the minivans
in particular.
I mean, you know, we, wedefinitely serve some smaller
cars for sure, but this van yeahyeah, you get a lot of.
You get a lot of the van.
You know small vans, biggersuvs, pickup trucks, uh, you
know, because ultimately youneed you, you, regardless of,
like, how you're setting up yourcar to sleep, you still need a

(15:01):
car that's big enough toaccommodate your laying self
down.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
Right right.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
You know some cars, like I was saying, like we did a
Honda Fit one time, If you'refive foot, nothing it works
great.
But if you're like me andyou're 6'3", you're going to
have a hard time sleeping in aHonda Fit.
Going to have a hard timesleeping in a Honda Fit.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Well, I have to tell you to me, it seems to me, the
perfect vehicle to have would bea minivan.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
They are pretty ideal for camping in a lot of ways.
Yeah, just in terms of size andeconomy and kind of the balance
of all those things, They'vebecome very popular for camping,
for sure.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
I was just going to say the Chrysler Pacific has got
that stow-and-go in the floor.

Speaker 4 (15:43):
Yeah, you've got all that extra storage space, grand
Caravan.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
Everything you can fold down into the floor.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
Or just a full-size cargo van without the seats,
like a full-size Chevy or Ford, and then have you outfit it.
Can you do that to look like ohyeah?

Speaker 3 (16:02):
Many, many, many, many times.
Yeah, so we have a, we have afull van conversion shop here in
washington and we we do, like Isaid, everything from sprinters
to chevy express, ford, econoline, ford, transit, ram,
promaster, um, you know thesmaller cargo vans like the
promaster city.
We have a.
We've done a ton of differentvans and um, yeah, we see a lot
of the newer ones like thesprinter and the transit and the

(16:23):
promaster, but we'll say yes topretty much any van.
We had a woman from texas driveall the way up to us to work on
her for transit connect, justbecause she was having a hard
time finding a company thatwould work on like her smaller
van in your area.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
So well, I want to know about power generation.
Do you have, do you have, mobile generators that you can,
you know, kind of semipermanently mount inside, say,
for instance, a nice size cargovan?

Speaker 3 (16:50):
Yeah, you know you don't actually see a ton of
people using generators at thispoint in like the van world for
power.
You know it's a lot more solaris being used.
You know people are mountingsolar panels to the roof of
their van, or they're um we're,you know we're connecting like
their alternator to their housebattery system so when they
drive they get a nice charge um,or they're, you know, they

(17:12):
might have a shore power inleton the outside of their vehicle.
And on occasion, sure, youcould have like a tiny little
honda generator if you reallyneeded it to, you know, charge
up your van.
But it's amazing how much poweryou can get with the
combination of solar andalternator charging alone.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
Very interesting.
Do you have something along thelines of like an outdoor shower
or something?

Speaker 3 (17:33):
Oh yeah, people, yeah , outdoor showers all the time.
Yeah, absolutely.
I mean, you've got likesometimes just outdoor shower
out the back of a van, so likewhen you open the the doors you
can put like a little curtainbetween the doors and you can
shower outside.
Or there's like these thingscalled the solar shower now that
people buy.
It's not really something likewe're installing, but you see
people who are like doingminimalist car camping, buying

(17:55):
these like, yeah, these showers, you like hang them up on a tree
or something and then they getwarm from being exposed to the
sun and then you just open it upand it just showers on top of
you, just a gravity feed typething.
Exactly, yeah, it's the simpleway to go, and then we'll build
a shower inside a van too, likea full little tiny half bath

(18:17):
with a shower and a toilet andstuff.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
So yeah, sky's the limit, man.
Well, yeah, I find it allfascinating and very interesting
.
So it's campandcarcom.

Speaker 3 (18:28):
That is the website.
Yeah, so if you're likedefinitely curious about like
you know, I encourage peoplelike even if you're not able to
work with us, or like if we'retoo far away for a custom build
or the kits that we have aren'treally suited to your needs,
just take a look at ourportfolio and really check out
all the different ways that itis possible to outfit different
kinds of vehicles and creativeways that maybe you look at that

(18:51):
and you get inspired to do ityourself if you're really handy
and you don't want to pay us todo it, check it out and expand
your thinking around what kindof camping is possible wow.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
So in other words, I don't have to go and buy the
boom box anymore, I can justturn up the car stereo and I can
rock myself to sleep in theback of my suv.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
Yeah, just make sure you don't run your car battery
dead because you're sleeping inyour car at night right playing
too much music.
You get in trouble that way.

Speaker 4 (19:21):
Yeah, the music is not too big a draw.
It's the videos that will getyou.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
You would know more about that than me.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
You mean like playing your little movie off your
little car TV that's coming outof the roof or whatever.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
That kind of thing.
Steve, it's great to talk toyou, my friend.
Thanks so much for joining us.
I appreciate you.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
It's really cool.
Yeah, you're very welcome.
Thanks for having me.
Thanks, Steve.

There you go.
He said everything came outfine, sorry.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
Had to go there.

Speaker 1 (24:52):
Time now for some of the stories making news
headlines this week, willowSprings Raceway up for sale.
What the founding of WillowSprings also the first
purpose-built road course in theUnited States was backed by
renowned sports car racingengineer and driver Ken Miles.
Bill and Maxine Huth took overthe track in 1962 and expanded

(25:15):
the facility from the originaltwo-and-a-half-mile road course
known as Big Willow to itscurrent arrangement, a 600-acre
complex of seven racetracksembracing nearly every
motorsports discipline.
Since it opened on November 23,1953, the facility has operated
year-round, thanks, obviously,to the advantageous Southern

(25:37):
California weather.
Willow Springs Raceway has alsostarred in TV and movie
productions, including the Fordvs Ferrari movie Big Willow.
The price has not beendisclosed, however.
A value assessment from June4th of this year values the
venue at $2.25 million, whichdoesn't seem like a whole lot to

(25:57):
me.
No, not for that?

Speaker 2 (26:00):
Did you ever go out there?

Speaker 1 (26:01):
That's just a buy-in, Boris did you ever go out there
?
One time I went one time whenthey were doing the SRT program
with Ralph Gilles and were youout there with me there too?

Speaker 4 (26:13):
No, I wasn't there on the same wave you were, but at
any rate.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
So they were offering drives on the road course of
Hemi, srts, challengers andchargers.
And I will be the first toadmit that I'm not familiar with
the road course, I'm not aprofessional driver and I
wouldn't know what I'm doing onthat thing, because you can get
that car up to over 100 miles anhour pretty quick.

(26:39):
So I went over to Ralph verynice guy said Ralph, would you
please drive me?
Well, yeah, but I mean the carsare here for I know, I know,
but I'd like to have theexperience of you driving me
around the road course.
So we got into a Challenger andpretty much the entire every

(27:00):
turn of that track he had thecar sideways it was.
I was a thrilled little girlgoing around that track.
Well, as it turns out, thetrack officials and the
officials from Chrysler at thetime did not know that he was
the one that was driving the car.

Speaker 4 (27:17):
Oh, they thought you were doing it.

Speaker 1 (27:19):
Dude when we pulled in the pits.
Here they all come.
And then he rolls down thewindow and looks at them and
says is there a problem?
Oh no, mr.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
Gilles.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
No, it's fine, Everything's fine that car.
The tires were smoking on thecar when we pulled in the pits
because they were, you know, they were street tires on there.
But how fun was that and I gothim to drive me around.
I was thrilled, it was anabsolute blast.
And what a great track that is.
You know it's out there realclose to the Mojave Desert and

(27:50):
you know slight hills andthere's a little hilly
mountainous area at one end ofthe track.
But man, is that fun?
Just tons of fun.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
Yeah, $2.whatever million to buy it, but then you
have to maintain it.
Well, there's that million tobuy it, but then you have to
maintain it.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
Well, there's that.

Speaker 4 (28:05):
If you've got the 2.5 to buy it.

Speaker 1 (28:06):
You can maintain it, I would imagine so.
I guess that they just don'twant to mess with it anymore,
but I can tell you that it'srented all the time for the
different disciplines They'vegot drag racing as well as road
racing Commercials.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
TV stuff.

Speaker 3 (28:21):
All that stuff.

Speaker 1 (28:22):
They do that out there.
Well, that was tons of fun andI'm sorry to disappoint.
I'm sad to see.
Hopefully somebody will buy itand that they'll update it and
it will continue on, because itjust would be a shame to have
that let go, so to speak.
