Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to another In
Wheel Time podcast, a 30-minute
mini version of the In WheelTime Car Show that airs live.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Every Saturday
morning it's the award-winning
In Wheel Time Car Talk Show.
Just ahead.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
What is he doing over
there?
He's getting a hold of our nextguest.
Oh my God, you know, I guess Ijust All right let's move on.
All right, it's theaward-winning in-wheel time car
talk show just ahead.
We hope we're going to connectwith our friend Michael Wooding
and Jeff's going to have thecruise in and events calendars
and I'll bring you storiesmaking automotive news headlines
this week.
(00:36):
And we're also going to put hisfeet to the fire and Mr Mars is
actually going to do come hellor high water, he is going to do
the Volvo that he has beenpromising us for months.
Howdy, along with Mike out ofthis world, mars.
We always need more Jeff Zekinand Chief Engineer David Ainsley
, who's vacationing this week inthe UP of Michigan.
(00:58):
I'm Don Armstrong.
Glad you could join us, okay,mr Mars.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
We're going to do it
first.
We're doing Michael Wooding.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
I haven't got him,
yet he's on his way.
He said, oh god, okay, so thenyou're gonna do your car review.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Let's do the car
review now we're talking about
the 2025 volvo ex40 twin motor,ultra, all-wheel drive.
Now this vehicle, the finalassembly point, is in ghent,
g-h-e-n-t.
Belgium, which kind ofsurprised me.
And uh, the reality of it is,this is new for 2025, but it's
(01:34):
all based on the last year'sxc40.
So they took the xc40, theykind of rebuilt it and turned it
into the ex40.
Now it's got parts we're noteven going into that.
So it's got available trimlevels.
There's actually three trims, but you could kind of look at it
six, because there's the core, the plus and the ultra, but each
(01:54):
one can have a single motor ora twin motor, so you can
actually get six differentvariants of this vehicle.
Seats five people.
It's got a new battery, so itcharges a little faster and I
read something on Edmunds thatit actually charges 10% faster,
so it's kind of it's a fewminutes.
(02:15):
It was kind of weird to me thatthey would even talk about it
being that, but anyway, Wouldyou like to start this?
car review.
No, I'm just I'm trying tostick to the facts and not what
I I'm thinking.
It's got a lot of things on theoutside of it.
It's got pixel headlighttechnology which, if you're not
familiar with that, theyactually have little cameras in
the headlights that reads whatthe lighting is on the outside,
cars coming at you and thingslike that, and it adjusts the
(02:37):
brightness of your headlightsaccordingly.
Where there's no headlights oranything out there, it gets
brighter.
Yeah, mine does that.
Does it Well?
Does it have?
Is it called pixel technology?
Speaker 3 (02:46):
That's the first.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
I'd heard of it, but
anyway, headlights, that's what
we call them.
It's got the LED fog lights.
It's got the power side mirrors.
It's got a power sunroof, powerliftgate Rolls on the optional
(03:08):
well, they're actually standardon the ultra trim.
Now the get into the interiorof this thing.
It's got the floor tunnel.
Most EVs don't have a floortunnel on them because it's
still based on that XC40 fromthe previous year.
So it's still got the tunnel init.
So it kind of takes up some ofthe feeding foot area room that
you would expect to have in anEV.
It's got a 12.3 inch digitaldriver display.
You got a nice nine inchtouchscreen center stack, which
is very important, and we'll getto that in a moment.
You've got suede microtechinterior.
(03:30):
First row is seated.
They're heated and they're cool.
The second row is heated.
It is only a two-row vehicle, which is a very good thing in
this size of vehicle.
You've got the surround viewcamera.
It's got connections withGoogle and Apple and all these
other things and it has adigital owner's manual.
I thought was ratherinteresting.
Forget looking anything else up.
(03:50):
Got the folding second row seat.
Got a Harman Kardon premiumaudio system with 13 speakers,
600-watt subwoofer that isair-vented, which is rather
unusual.
But switching back up to that9-inch screen, that center stack
, it's very important and I'msurprised it's only that nine
inches and I think it could be alittle bit bigger to help out
because everything is there.
(04:11):
Hold that right there.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Jeff, everybody wants
it bigger.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Well, I know, but
across the bottom it's minimal
buttons, but everything is inthat touch screen.
So, for example, you get intoit like a lot of EVs, you put
your foot on the brake, put itin gear, it starts and off you
go.
Great, love it, that's fine.
But now you want to stop, youpull in your driveway and you
want to get out.
Now you can put it in there andyou can sit there and say get
(04:36):
out.
Well, it's going to still berunning.
Or you can go over to the touchscreen and you hit home and you
go to the control panel and yougo into the control panel,
that's two touches.
Then you've got to scroll tothe bottom because it's not all
on the same screen.
And you touch it again thethird time and says I want to
turn this vehicle off.
Great, you can get out of yourcar, but when you do, it's still
(05:00):
on and it's very distressingwhenever you get out and the
radio is still playing as youwalk away.
So what you have to do once youpush the gain, it says I want
to turn this vehicle off.
It's going to come up and askyou are you sure you want to
turn this vehicle off?
And you have to tell it.
Yes, so you've got to touchfour times to be able to turn
the vehicle off before you getout of it.
(05:21):
I find that silly.
Whenever everybody else, youcould push it one time and say
stop, I stopped.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Well, the new gm evs.
You don't have to do any ofthat.
You get in with the key in yourpocket, put your foot on the
brake and it starts I will saythe other thing.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
The volvo is known
for their safety.
They have this reputation forbeing a safe vehicle and perhaps
that's why they did it.
Just like sometimes you jump inthe car, you put it in gear and
you're gone and you want tocall somebody, but you didn't
pair your phone.
So normally you got to waituntil you're stopped, not in
this car.
60 miles an hour is when I didit.
(05:59):
I'm sure you could probably doit a little faster, but you can
pair your phone going down thehighway at 60 miles an hour, not
that it's distracting oranything while you're driving,
but you can do that in thisfalvo, so you can do all these
good things to kind of make yourlife a little bit better.
So, uh, again, twin electricmotors on this vehicle that we
had, 402 horsepower.
Equivalent transmission is adirect drive.
(06:21):
Basically it's one Will berated for towing 2,000 pounds.
Gross weight on this vehicle is5,840 pounds.
Amazingly, now the MPG it saysit's rated for 103 in the city,
85 on the highway, combined 94.
I still haven't figured out howto convert all that stuff.
So I did it a different way.
(06:41):
I drove this vehicle 270 miles.
I had to charge it twice.
So I did it a different way.
I drove this vehicle 270 miles,I had to charge it twice.
The total cost was $33.59 to go270 miles.
Now I took that same $33.59 andfigured gasoline at $2.60 in my
(07:03):
truck that gets 18 miles to thegallon, if not better, and I
could go 232 miles versus the270 that I went in the ev
without spending two hourssitting at the subaru dealer at
six o'clock in the morningbefore he opens charging it.
It's pretty easy to get intoand again you can get in it and
go as you need to.
Turning it off is not so much.
Uh, it rides and drives.
It's heavy enough that it'sabsolutely going to ride and
drive better.
It's got there's no enginenoise.
(07:24):
Got a little bit of road noiseon it, but enough that it's
absolutely going to ride anddrive better.
There's no engine noise.
Got a little bit of road noiseon it, but I mean, it's not
anything that's not unacceptable.
Turn that Harman Kardon stereoup and you override that.
As to the cost of it, now, thebase trim price on this vehicle
would be $53,795.
Now the base model price is$6,2045, and we had the base
(07:45):
Ultra, I guess you would call it.
The $62,045 was the MSRP.
As tested Mercedes-Benzequivalent is an EQB, which used
to be a GLB for $53,050.
Audi QE Tron for $49,800.
And the Genesis GV60 at $52,350.
(08:05):
So it's in the same price asall these other guys.
But again, you need to kind ofbe prepared to deal with the
controls and the infotainmentsystem.
That I think is a little toomuch needy.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Too much involvement.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Yes, it does
Absolutely too much involvement,
but otherwise, if you'relooking for something like that,
you might look at it.
Otherwise, it does Absolutelytoo much involvement, but
otherwise, if you're looking forsomething like that, you might
look at it.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Otherwise, it's a
nice looking car.
Well, I've got him turned onover here.
His name is Michael Wooding andthat would be the Auto
Appraisal Network man.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Thank you for that,
mike, we've got to get him to
unmute, unmute.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Ta-da, there he.
You need to move closer to thedang microphone.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Okay, I can do that.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Golly, you asked for
it.
Yeah, I guess, so that's justfine.
How are you?
Speaker 4 (09:00):
Well, in and out, man
, you know I'm fighting medical
issues as you go, but right nowI'm in pretty good shape.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Well good, you look
fabulous.
I'm in pretty good shape.
Well good, you look fabulous.
And I needed to know a coupleof things.
One is are you still trying tosell the 56 station wagon?
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Yes, I am, and I'm
not expecting it to sell anytime
soon.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Because it's
overpriced.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Well is it overpriced
.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
I don't know.
You're the expert at that.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
I don't believe it is
.
I think it's an absolutebargain is what I'm asking.
But the market right now isjust really confused.
It's just like the housingmarkets fluctuating here and
there, going down and up.
Interest rates are not gettinglowered and that's making people
(09:55):
hold on to their money.
So they're not buying houses andthey're not buying toy cars.
So you see that if you go tothe auction, you can see a lot
of these really nice carsselling for cheap.
If you've got money in yourpocket and you want to let it go
, now is the time to buy.
Yeah, you can get a lot of carsfor a little bit of money.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Well, you know it's
funny, we do this thing called
the Hemings Sold Car Roundup.
I'm sure you're familiar withthe thing online and it tells
you know what the car ultimatelysold for.
And man, I'm telling you, there's some really nice cars
out there that are selling in.
Just you know one of them todayreally nice car, $8,000.
What is?
Speaker 4 (10:39):
it the.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Bonneville yeah, the
Bonneville great, big, huge car
$8,000.
You know.
So yeah, I get that.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
And that's a $25,000
car yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Oh, absolutely In
drivable shape, in really nice
shape, and go up to $40,000 and$50,000.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
Have you been doing a
lot of appraisals lately?
They have slowed along witheverything else.
I did just a couple here in thelast day.
You know, people die off.
People are still dying.
They're leaving cars that Ihave to go do estate values on.
I've got one legal battle thingcoming up where a shop screwed
(11:21):
a guy, so I might get someexpert witness testimony to work
out that and that pays prettygood.
So I'm looking forward to thatone and I've got to go Monday.
I just did a black 58 Corvette.
It wasn't quite finished.
He's building it himself in thegarage but it's going to be a
(11:43):
high-end build when it's done.
But he's got enough money in itthat he wanted to insure it now
, right.
So he went ahead and got anappraisal of what is the value.
Money is that he wanted toinsure it now.
You know, right, somethinghappened to it, yeah, so he went
ahead and got it in the priceboard.
What is?
Speaker 1 (11:58):
the value as it sits
now.
Gotcha, yeah, and those aresome of those things that you've
pointed out to us in the pastthat if you want to insure a car
, you've got it in the garage, you've got it in pieces, but
it's still worth money.
You get it insured for it'sstill in pieces in the garage,
but as you progress with yourrestoration then you need to
(12:21):
have it reappraised for whatit's worth at that time.
How often do you do that?
If a guy's working on his car40 hours a month, would you have
to really consider every monthas an appraisal?
Speaker 4 (12:38):
hagerty has a program
now where you can take out
insurance based on an initialappraisal and every 180 days
they raise it by specifiedamount.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Assuming you're
making some progress and
increasing the value.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
Sometimes you're not
going to make progress.
Something can happen that youstall on.
Well then, you can stop thatright then and there at that
number.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
But you don't have to
have somebody like you come out
and look at it again every 180days?
Speaker 4 (13:11):
No, but they can take
the original frame and say,
well, it's not, it's fallen, butit's not going to fall any
further than this Okay, okay.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Have you had any
business when it comes to the
valuation of a car?
Valuation of a car as you know, you drive it off the lot and
then you wreck the car the pricedifference between what it's
(13:44):
worth and what you paid for itis big.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
The diminished value
is usually about 50% of my
business, 50% Yep.
I got gap insurance.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Several of them a
month, and so a gap insurance is
the way to get around that.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
Yes, but who does
that?
Very few people.
Maybe on some certain high-endcars it'll do that, but your
average Joe is not going to dothat.
And he's still got a 2022 with,you know, 50,000 miles on it.
That has value, but that valuehas been lessened because of
(14:24):
that accident, right, so it'sstill.
There's money to be made.
Now I tell people you know, people call in well, I've got a
2022, 2022, camry, and you hadto replace the back bumper.
What was the total value?
Fifteen hundred dollars.
Well, I said, you know you canask for diminished value, but
(14:45):
you ain't gonna make enough outof it to pay me too, but you
just do that yourself.
Yeah, now, if you've got five, six, seven thousand, $6,000,
$7,000 worth of debt, that'swhere I come into play, because
I charge a flat fee of $450, butI produce a pretty
comprehensive report that can beused in court if need be.
(15:06):
A lot of these appraisals thatyou get are just a two-page
thing that say this, this andthis about the appraiser and the
company, and then one pageabout what your problem is with
the car and how much that canmake value to it.
They don't show the breakdownof the calculations like we did.
We break it all out.
(15:27):
Break it all out.
They show the market value ofother cars that are in the same
area.
What they're selling for thehad not been damaged versus
damaged cars.
Do those calculations, based onthe repair bill, and produce
the report.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
So it's like comps.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
It's extremely
comprehensive.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah, so it's like
comps in a housing market.
You know this is comparablesand so I can see your point
because you've got to take intofact.
I've got a deductible on my carPlus I need you to go out there
and do that.
So you know I've got to makesure that, or at least have an
idea that there's going to beenough money there to at least
cover the expenses.
Yeah, right?
Speaker 4 (16:07):
Hey man, we're
running short on time.
Let's talk about expenses Ihave to pay.
If you cover the cost of theappraisal, it still puts money
in the customer's pocket.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Yeah right, hey man,
we're running short on time.
Let's talk about your car show.
You still got that going on.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
It is going on and
it's going to be a little bit
different this year.
I'm a member of the Pontiac Club.
As you know, I'm wearing aToyota shirt because my wife
works for Toyota, but I've gottwo Pontiacs now.
So I contracted the PontiacClub.
Because of my medicalconditions going in and out, I
(16:46):
felt that it would be good tohave somebody take over a big
party.
So they're going to do all theparking, all the judging, do the
trophy giveaway, so I'll bemore of just a figurehead at the
show.
Got a golf cart and a ridearound, just you know, get to
meet people where I haven't hadthat time before.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Well, and that's
always good, because you've got
such a great personality andeverybody loves you, including
us, and we wish you the best ofluck with your health.
And when is the car show thisyear?
Speaker 4 (17:15):
It is September 27th
9 to 2.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
Yeah, and the Pontiac
Club ought to be really good at
it, because they do their ownshow down in Galveston, that big
show in Galveston.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
That's really nice on
the pier I'm thinking with the
people that are pretty loyal tome in the show already, plus
people that come from thePontiac group, ought to make for
a pretty big show.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
Yep, exactly, Michael
Wooding.
It's always good to see you andto talk to you.
My friend, Best of luck withyour health issues.

Speaker 3 (21:56):
Well, you're doing
headlines.
I'll look it up.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Okay, this is for you
, mr Barr, since you got to
review the Volvo Yee-haw.
Volvo Cars will trim its USproduct offerings to focus on
domestically gasoline-poweredcrossovers, as tariffs and loss
of federal electric vehicle taxcredits hurt the Swedish
automaker's ability to sell itslargely imported lineup
(22:20):
profitably.
The S90 large sedan assembledin China and the V60 wagon from
Europe will no longer be offeredin the United States starting
in the 2026 model year, according to a Volvo
spokesperson.
April Volvo reported that theywould cancel orders of the S90
(22:43):
next year.
Volvo sold 1,364 S90s.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Okay, there you go,
yep Well you know, I was sitting
here thinking.
Speaker 1 (22:55):
Maybe you could drive
yours to the Port of Houston
and have it shipped back.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Take it to Ford,
they'll recall it.
Yeah, didn't Ford own Volvo atone time?
Speaker 1 (23:03):
I think at one time
they did I think at one time
they did and Tata Motors boughtVolvo.
Oh yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
I love Tata Motor
Company.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
I know you do A lot.
Automakers face no fines forfailures to meet fuel efficiency
rules dating back to the 2022model year Under a law signed by
President Trump this month.
The tax and budget billapproved by Trump ends penalties
for not meeting CAFE orCorporate Average Fuel Economy

(23:31):
Bring back the horsepower baby.
A 1975 energy law.
Bring back the horsepower baby.
Nhtsa said in a letter toautomakers seen by Reuters, it
