Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
I'm Bob Lovell. It's brought to you by Indiana Donor Network.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
We have a lot of football to talk about, college football,
talking about the Colts, also recapping last night's great action
in high school football, plus some Fever basketball that's.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Coming up later on tonight.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Right now, though, we turn it over to the star
of our show, the Busiest guy you know. Our score
board update extraordinaires, Jace Hodges.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Once again coach a pleasure to be with you alongside
a producer, Caleb Zuover. I'm Jase Hodge for this Indiana
Sports Talk update that's going to run through of everything
going on in the sports world the Indiana Fever. They
have game number one of the WNBA playoffs tomorrow in Atlanta,
three pm. The tip off for game number one and
for the Fever, their number one goal this season was
(00:51):
to make some noise in the playoffs. So head coach
Stephanie White notes today how they can do that, I.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Think, more than anything, just our resilience and I mean
the fact that we've been able to continue to put
one foot in front of the other and be competitive
and you know in ball games, it allows us to
have a chance on you know, night in and night out.
You know, we've got to be really disciplined. You know,
we've got to make sure we find the right shot.
On the offensive end, we've got to make sure the
(01:17):
ball continues to move and we get we get defensive
defenses in rotation, and then defensively, we've got to be solid.
You know, we can't afford to We've got to protect
the paint, certainly, but we can't afford to allow teams
to get a lot of threes and a lot of
free throw attempts against us. We're not we're not matching
them threes for threes anymore with the lineup that we have,
So we've really got to guard the three point line
and keep them off the free throw line.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
I fever have game number one once again tomorrow at
three o'clock and Atlanta. They return home for game number
two Tuesday at seven thirty pm. Gamebridge Field House a
site for game number two in the NFL. The Indianapolis
Colts have week number two as they take on the
Denver Broncos tomorrow at four or five from Lucas Oil Stadium.
Looking to begin a week at two and oh for
(02:00):
the first time and a long time, they're running over
the first time since twenty thirteen. For Sane Steichen, though,
he talks about how good this Broncos defense really is.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
And I think they do a lot of good things.
I think it starts up front. I think fifteen's a
hell of a player. Obviously just got paid a lot
of money for a good reason. I think Allen's a
good player. Number two. Certain he's one of the best
in the business. They're aggressive, they like to play in
your face and match and rush and cover. So I
think Vance Joseph does a heck of a job with
(02:29):
the scheme. Had a chance to go against him for
many years. So a lot of respect there for those
guys in the way they play and how hard they play.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
The fifteens liking notes there is Nick Benito, They're a linebacker,
really good player, really good defense as a whole. In
terms of good defenses, though, the Colts had a really
good defensive defensive game in a week number one against
Miami and Daniel Jones, the Colts starting quarterback, notes how
the Colts defense helped their offense have success last week.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
Yeah, I mean that makes our job that much easier,
you know, when you have two turnovers in the first
I don't know how many plays they ran, but it
was it was quick.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
You know, we get short fields.
Speaker 6 (03:08):
And opportunities to punch it in and that makes a
tremendous difference. I mean, our defense was was stout all
day and made a lot of big plays. So you know,
it's on us to capitalize when they when they do that.
So yeah, as an offense, it's fun to fun to
see that, and you know you got to take advantage
of it.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
The Indianapolis Colts have kickoff tomorrow at four oh five
against the one and oh Denver Broncos, looking to move
to two and oh the college football level just gone final.
Purdue takes the loss for the first time this season.
They fall thirty three seventeen up at Ross eight Stadium
and West La Fayette USC moves to three and oh
for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish now underway. In the
(03:48):
second half of play. Their first drive, they go three
and out. A and M gets the football back. A
and M leads twenty eight twenty four In a ranked
matchup up in South Bend, ball State gets to win
thirty four twenty nine over FCS New Hampshire and number
twenty two Indiana. Last night wallops Indiana State seventy three
to nothing. In the MLB, the Cardinals they lead four
(04:10):
to one in Milwaukee right now. The Cubs they lost
five to four at home to Tampa Bay Rays. The
Guardians beat the White Sox three to one. The Reds
just now beginning in Sacramento against the Athletics and Minor
League Baseball. The Cubs and ten Caps both finishing their season. However,
the Indians, they keep going. They're a half game back
currently in the East. In the International League. They are
(04:33):
up currently five to one, but in a rain to
lay here in downtown Indianapolis. Some storms coming through the area.
We'll see if they can't get the victory. I'm Jay
sont Network Indiana Sports.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Welcome back everyone, I'm Bob Lovel. This is Indiana Sports Talk.
Notre Dame troils at the well they start of the
third quarter. They're down twenty twenty four to Texas A
and M from Irish one on one, Doctor Lynn Taylor, Lynn, thank.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
You for the call. What's happening in that? To start
this second half?
Speaker 7 (05:03):
Notre Dame goes punts the ball to Texas A and
M to start the third quarter, but A and M
has the ball at their own one yard line. Good
special teams by the Foddy Irish jumped out to a
quick seven to nothing lead, Bob when the Irish blocked
an A and M punt that was returned for a
touchdown by Fort Winning native Kaye Johnson. But the Aggies
quarterback Marcel Reed has had a great first half, throwing
(05:24):
for two hundred and fifty eight yards, one hundred and
seventy three of those going to Mario Craby, the wide
receiver who had a touchdown at e six yard strike.
Running back Le'Veon Mos for the Aggies with three rushing
scores and for the Irish, CJ cars eleven of seventeen
for one hundred and fifty nine yards and a touchdown
to Jeremiah Love on a thirty six yards strike. Jadarian
Price also punched in a scoring a touchdown rushing, but
(05:46):
in the first half Notre Dame controlled the pull. But Bob,
the Aggies have owned the big plays and has been
the story in this game.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Well, big plays. I learned early on in my career.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Big plays, especially in football, got to eliminate big plays,
try and get your own, and big plays are a
big problem. Doctor Lynn Clark Alive from Notre Dame, Irishtown,
twenty twenty four to Texas A and m Lynn.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Thanks for the call. We'll talk to you when the
game's over. Thank you so much. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Matt Taylor joins me the voice of the Indianapolis Colts.
Colts in Denver tomorrow, four o'clock start down at.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Lucas Oil Stadium. Matt, thank you so much. How are
you tonight?
Speaker 8 (06:32):
I'm good, Bob. Just sitting here watching some college football
like the rest of us. How are you just.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Doing a radio show? Not like the rest of us? Here,
just doing that, all right.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
So the word coming in now the buzz is Denver
has one of the best defenses in the league, and
it's an evolving cult team obviously new quarterback and all this.
So this seems to be a great opportunity for the
Colts and seems to it shapes.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Up to be quite a formidable opponent tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (07:07):
Yeah, for sure. I mean it's a huge game. I mean,
they all are in the NFL, but it as really
stiff test for the Colts because of that defense that
they're going to see from Denver tomorrow. And you know
last year in twenty twenty four, they were top ten
and just about everything. And they were also they led
the NFL in total sacks as a defense. They had sixty.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Three sacks for the year.
Speaker 8 (07:29):
That set a franchise record for them, by the way,
and they just pretty much just picked up where they
left off last year in week one. You know, they
faced their rookie quarterback last week in Tennessee and cam Ward.
Speaker 9 (07:42):
Yikes.
Speaker 8 (07:42):
That's a tough indoctination into the NFL on the road. Denver,
I can tell you is a really tough place to play.
And then you go up against that defense right out
of the gate.
Speaker 9 (07:52):
That was tough sledding for them.
Speaker 8 (07:54):
So you know, Denver gave up just one hundred and
thirty three total yards, they gave up only seven first downs,
but they only won the.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Game twenty to twelve. And a big reason why.
Speaker 8 (08:04):
Is because their offense was just really you know, choppy,
right bo Nicks in his in his first start in
year number two, turn the ball over a couple of times.
We weird game because you know, they turned it over
four times and Tennessee started in plus territory five times,
but they didn't score a touchdown on any of those drives.
(08:24):
So if that defense is not up to snuff and
not nearly as good as what it is, you know,
Denver is probably in jeopardy of losing that game. But
obviously there there are four to the ability to kind
of lean on that unit that got studs on that
side of the ball in all three levels, Zach Allen
and Nick Bonito and Pat Sortan last year who was
(08:45):
a defensive Player of the Year. So it's a really,
really good It's gonna be a really tough test for
the Colts, but you know, they're at home and they're
trying to get off to a two and oh start
for the first time since two thousand and nine.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
And they have to feel a confident based upon how
they did some things offensively. You know, we've talked about
the quarterback position. We've talked about Daniel Jones and and
those things.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Like him because he manages the game.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
I think the last Saturday or Sunday was a perfect
example of that. He does what he needs to do. Uh,
the biggest thing is don't turn the ball over. As
I mentioned, game management, and that's what he's good at
and look, you still have Jonathan Taylor, do you have
a talented offensive group, and you have a quarterback who
has done this and won.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Big games before.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
So yeah, this is this is one of those that
if you're going to be an up rational on team,
you need to play well.
Speaker 8 (09:41):
You know, from a schematic standpoint, I completely agree with you.
I mean, you know, Denver's got some really good players
and they go out and execute. But from a scheme standpoint,
you know they're not going to roll anything out tomorrow
against Daniel Jones that he hasn't seen before. Yeah, in
the seventh, seventh year in the NFL, and you know,
tomorrow being his seventy first career start. So the point is,
(10:02):
if the Colts get anything like they got from Daniel
Jones last week for the rest of the season, they're
going to be in good shape to win a lot
of football games this year. And that's how good he played,
you know, seventy five. It was really encouraging to see.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
All right, you know.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
That music means you are stuck having to get through
the scoreboard update, right, you do know that I know
the drill? All right, my brother, hang on, we'll come
back to talk more colts football with Matt Taylor on
Indiana Sports Tuck.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
I'm Ja Sodge for this Indiana Sports Talk update the
WNBA the Indiana Fever. There'll be an action tomorrow on
the WNBA playus for the second straight season. Last year
got swept in the first round. This year, looking to
avenge that take on the Atlanta Dream in Game one
tomorrow at three pm. Game two will be at home
at game bridgefield House Tuesday seven thirty to do the
change of format in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.
(11:00):
In college football score update now at the Notre Dame game,
Notre Dame hits the end zone a seventeen yard touchdown
from Jedai and Price. They take the lead there against
Texas A and M thirty one to twenty eight. Final
score from Ross eight Stadium. Per Due falls thirty three
to two seventeen. The boiler Makers fall to two and
one on this season. Ball State gets their first win
(11:21):
of the years. They take down New Hampshire thirty four
to twenty nine. The final score there. We saw a
little of a scare for Ohio State, the number one
team in the nation. Earlier in the ball game they
were only up by seven and the third quarter against
the Ohio Bobcats. They are since up thirty to nine
against the Ohio Bobcats of the mac and then the
Indiana Hoosiers. They got the dinormous wins put it that
(11:41):
way against Indiana State and FCS School. Yesterday, the twenty
second ranked Hoosiers won seventy three nothing over the Indiana
State Sycamores to move to three and zero on the year.
In a big matchup for the Hoosiers looms next week
as they will be at home against number nine Illinois,
who also got the win today. For the Saint Louis Cardinals,
they now lead six to one against Milwaukee, the best
(12:02):
team of baseball. They lead by five runs the Reds.
They just began against the Athletics at their makeshift ballpark
and Zacca Ramento. The Indianapolis Indians are currently in a
weather delay that's now has since been lifted. They lead
five to one top of the eight against the Iowa Cubs.
Network Indiana Sports, I'm Jay Sodge.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Welcome back everyone.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
We resume our conversation with Matt Taylor, the voice of
the Indianapolis Colts. Colts taking on Denver tomorrow all right, Matt,
in your conversations throughout the week with people, what is
it that the Colts have to do, aside from, you know,
attacking a pretty talented defense, what specifically are the things
(12:44):
they need to be able to accomplish?
Speaker 8 (12:47):
Well, the first thing I mean, I mean goes without
saying on offense, take good care of the football, and
it kind of piggybacks up you know where we left
off on the last segment with Daniel Jones. Just continue
to play with Ryan himself. He needs to have a
really good game and again, you know, just be the
distributor of the football. Seven different receivers or pass catchers
in this case the Colts were involved last week on
(13:09):
offense and just explore the middle of the field like
they did to Tyler Warren. That's going to be really imperative.
But also get some chunk plays to kind of spread
out that defense of Denver. And you know, the thing
that kind of concerns me the most about what Denver
did last week is obviously they were dominant against a
pretty pedestrian offense with a rookie quarterback from Tennessee, but
(13:32):
they did it without blitzing a lot. They didn't send
a lot of people at the quarterback and the Colts
did see a lot of blitzes last week from Miami,
which is encouraging because they've seen them and they've been
able to pick some of these things up. But I
just think it's a really really important game, you know,
like we talked about at the top, even though it's
(13:53):
only a seat two games, you know, I think that
this is one of those contests that's going to have
some playoff implications about it. I think both teams on
paper going into the season have playoff aspirations. So this
head to head tiebreaker, with it being an AFC game,
could hold a lot of weight at the end of
the year when you talk about, you know, week fifteen,
sixteen seventeen, you start mapping out playoff scenarios and who's
(14:16):
in and who needs who to beat, who you know,
who's got the advantage. I think this is one of
those games that's gonna hold a lot of weight. And so,
you know, defensively, tomorrow, the Cults are going to be
down two of their top corners. That's concerning which our
various ward won't play. He's in the concussion protocol. Jalen
Jones isn't gonna play. He's dealing with a hamstring injury.
(14:36):
In fact, today news wise, he went on injured reserves,
so he's gonna miss at least the next four games
of the season. So it's next man up in the secondary.
The Cult are probably gonna turn to a guy Makai Blackman,
who they traded for at the end of the preseason,
and the next man up after him is Jonathan Edwards,
an undrafted rookie free agent. So that's going to play
(14:59):
into the Cult's ability to be multiple games specific and
throw in some disguise for bow Nicks. You know, obviously
it's a lot easier to do that with a guy
like Ward with his resume as opposed to Makai Blackman,
who's only making his fourth career start tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
So what I hear you saying is it's in the
bag tomorrow, easy, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Well, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Again, I don't mean to be redundant, but if if
you are going to be a top tier club, which
I think they can be, these are the kinds of
games that these are your fifty to fifty games. You
gotta do the you gotta do the right things, the
little things take care of the balls you point out,
move the sticks against the great defense, not give up
(15:48):
the big play. Try to create some of the big
plays yourself. Some of those basic things that you talk
about every game, but it's especially important in a game
like this.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Well it was.
Speaker 8 (15:59):
I mean, if they again, if they play like they
did last week and last week's probably you know, one
out of one hundred interns of it being perfect. I mean,
last week was as close to perfect in the NFL
as you're gonna get. And the reason I say that
you watched the game, but I mean they scored every
time they had the ball. They were seven for seven,
scoring points that hadn't happened in the NFL since nineteen
(16:21):
seventy seven. They didn't turn the ball over, they didn't
have to punt, defense created three takeaways.
Speaker 9 (16:28):
I mean, that was.
Speaker 8 (16:30):
Complimentary football at its finest. And so they're trying to
get off to this this good start, like I said,
haven't been two and zero since two thousand and nine.
I mean, I just think it's important. The way that
Daniel Jones played and the way the defense was able
to kind of back up the rhetoric of you know
who we're gonna be and what we're going to be
about with Ron Rubau on that side of the ball.
(16:52):
I just thought, for one afternoon and hopefully this is
backed up tomorrow. And this is gonna sound kind of like,
you know, pie in the sky, but I just thought,
for one afternoon, you could sense the crowd at Lucas
Oil Stadium Bob come together and it was like euphoric.
I mean, the fan base has always been good, They've
already shown up and we've had close to sellouts during
(17:14):
these you know, rocky up and down years. But I
just thought it was a huge, you know payoff for
the fans. On one afternoon, it was like this euphoric moments,
like we're finally watching good football and we think, based
on what we're seeing here, it's very sustainable and I
think that it is. So hopefully tomorrow Daniel Jones and
company gives this this uh, this this fan base another
(17:37):
you know, big afternoon of cheering, and I think it's
it could be a huge rallying cry for the fan
base in the city because the coaches believe that, the
players themselves believe it would just like to be it
would it would be It would feel good for the
rest of the city and the skeptics that you know
rightfully so had some questions about this team going into season.
To get on board, inside the bandwagon and hopefully get
(17:58):
off to a.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Two start, that's the idea.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
Make sure you listen to Matt's call tomorrow, four o'clock
start at Lucas Oil Stadium, Colts taking on the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Matt, thanks for your time, Thanks so much. Have a
great day tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (18:16):
I appreciate you four oh five. It's going to be
a late one, so we're getting used to it and
really excited for it.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Thanks a lot, Matt, have fun tomorrow you too.
Speaker 8 (18:25):
Bye bye.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
Greg Reakestraw knows a little bit about calling football games.
He does the preseason TV work for the Colts. Also
superstar at the ISC Sports Network and honored to say
my broadcast partner for iep UI basketball games.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
Greg, thanks for the call. How are you tonight?
Speaker 9 (18:47):
I'm good, my friend. Although I'll have to contradict what
mister Taylor had to say. The late games are the
one where I'm hosting the postgame show until two thirty
in the morning. Yeah, we kind of have this swing
gift Tomorrow I can get fun off at ten o'clock
tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
This swing shift, No, no, A lot a lot of
like you know, listen, I understand you're some of those
late games, those evening game.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
This is the joy of hosting a postgame call in show.
Speaker 9 (19:19):
Corrects. Like I'm sitting here realizing I'm like we the
last I guess the only really primetime game that we have.
We have a lot of four o'clock games this year,
which I'm fining with. We have Monday Night Football on
December the twenty second, and I sign off at two thirty.
I didn't have to be on the air the next
day for the Hall of Fame Classic in Newcastle at
(19:41):
eleven am. There might be a hotel room involved in
the eight and a half hour gap that I have
your hashtag first world problems.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
That's take your sleeping bag and sleep in the.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
Gym of one of those kinds of deals, or there aren't. Look,
there's some nice places there in Newcastle.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
You'll be fine.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
So this is a big game tomorrow with the Colts.
I don't think there's any question, and it is a
formidable opponent.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
You'll like.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
I like these kinds of matchups this early in the season.
You want to truly understand who you are and what
you are, and I suppose where you are you got
a perfect opportunity against a really good Denver team.
Speaker 9 (20:25):
Well, it's not lost on me that the two teams
really the Colts kind of battled for the last playoff
spot last year, are the two teams they got the
first two games out of a shoot this year, you know,
both those being in Yeah, I do think Denver is
probably a better team than Miami. I don't think they're
an unbeatable team by any stretch of the imagination. And
the Colts performance was so good and was so complete
(20:49):
last week. You know, I look at this game almost
more of a curiosity as to, all right, can the
Colts replicate what they did last week? They come back
to earth at all? And again the other thing, and
you know from your coaching background too, now that there's
at least one game worth of tape as to what
this offense can be, right, like, what this defense could
(21:11):
look like? What does Denver try to take away in
tomorrow's game.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
That's a great point. I mean, that is a that
is a.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Point that I think it lost on the casual fans,
is having that that we can get there and you'll
try to take some things away. All right, Greg, I
need you to hang on here through this upcoming break.
When come back and talk more with Greg Rigstraw Colt
send the Broncos tomorrow UH four oh five, start Lucas
(21:46):
Oil Stadium. And again, if you're going to the game,
be safe. Understand you need to add a little more time,
prepare you know yourself, leave a little earlier.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
There is traffic, there is construction, there's all that, So
keep that all in mind.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
We'll come back and talk to Greg after the score
Bored update with Jase Hodges on Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Song.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
I'm Jay Sodge from this Indiana Sports Talk update. The
Indiana Fever are in action in Atlanta tomorrow at three
pm for Game number one at w NBA Playoffs, but
game number two will be at gain Bridge Fieldhouse. We'll
have their first home playoff game in a few years.
And Lexi Holdagard for the Fever talks a little bit
about how much importance it is that'll play at home
(22:31):
for game number two.
Speaker 10 (22:32):
I think we're just really excited about it. I think
last year our fans were robbed of getting to be
part of the playoff experience, I know. I mean watching
the Pacers in playoff, the fans really do show out,
and game Bridge is loud and crazy and electric, and
so to be able to host a game there and
be able to bring what they've you know, how they've
supported us so long be able to give this to
them and have a really fun one. I think we're
(22:53):
really excited about it, and I love this new format,
so it'll be great.
Speaker 3 (22:57):
The new format, she mentioned, changes from last year, all
three games to be hosted by one team instead. Now
they will go back and for so game one in
Atlanta tomorrow, Game two back at game Bridge Tuesday at
seven thirty. In Game three at two, we determine time
if there is a Game three, and the fever in Atlanta.
Dream Series in college football perdue. They fall for the
first time today, thirty three to seventeen the Fighting Irish.
(23:21):
They currently lead thirty one to twenty eight, but they
just came up short on a fourth down conversion. A
and M takes over at midfield late in the third quarter.
Up in South Bend Ball, State Beach, New Hampshire, thirty
four to two, twenty nine. Major League Baseball, the Cardinals
are on a verge of a win over the Milwaukee
Brewers and Minor League Baseball and the Indianapolis Indians and
the bottom eighth. They lead five to two over the
(23:41):
Iowa Cubs. They're a half game back currently in their
division and the International League, looking to get a win
to tie up Toledo on top of the International League.
I'm Jay Sodge.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
Welcome back everyone.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
This is Indiana Sports Talk, brought to you by Indiana
Donor Network. We were rejoined by Greg Rigstraw, the incredibly
decorated sportscaster in our state, sportscaster of the Year. You
grew up in the Indiana and Broadcasters, Sports Writers and
Sportscasters Association. Proud to say my broadcast partner for I
(24:17):
p U I basketball games and member of the Colts
radio and TV team Colts and the Broncos Tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (24:27):
All right, have we covered this game?
Speaker 1 (24:28):
Have we talked about all the important things that we
need to as we get ready for this matchup tomorrow afternoon?
Speaker 9 (24:36):
Bob, there is not enough time before kickoff tomorrow for
us to cover all of the important grounds for Colts
and Broncos.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
Well, I would just remind everyone it's one of a
great number of games. Don't get too high, don't get
too low. Certainly, you want to win, you want to
play well, you want to come out without any injuries,
all of.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
Those those kinds of things. But I think it's great.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
And you had a very impressive win last week against Miami,
as you point out, a team they battled to get
into playoffs last year. Similar situation coming up tomorrow with Denver.
It's good to see Daniel Jones go out there and
do what we kind of expected him to be able
to do. And now you're just looking for that classic
(25:24):
improvement from game one to game two that people so
often talk about.
Speaker 9 (25:29):
And I'm not sure how you do it, because that's
the most complete win they had in four years. I mean, seriously,
you got got back to it was the largest margin
of victorations December of twenty one, the last game you
know the Colton won a couple of years ago when
they beat the Steelers or doing thirteen. It was kind
of reminiscent of that bro It was kind of like
what they did against the Bills when Jonathan Taylor had
(25:49):
five touchdowns in November of twenty one. And so you're right,
and normally you have this big jump from week one
to week two when you play that well, I'm not
sure that's possible. You know, Matt touched on the the
injuries and no Mooney warned at quarterback, and obviously he's
one of the big guys you brought in along with
Cam Binden, Jalen Jones. You came back to play last
(26:13):
week in the season opener, but hadn't played all preseason
and then re injured that hamstring. You know, you kind
of know what you have in the last couple of years,
but he hasn't factored in so far this year because
of injuries. The guy that will be brought in to
start in place of Ward is Makaia Blackman, who we
didn't see in the preseason right because he wasn't here.
(26:34):
He was acquired by the team, you know, after the
last preseason game, you know from the Minnesota Vikings. He'll
play some. Jonathan Edwards will get to play him, which
is a really cool story. Last year Jonathan played at Tulane.
For that he played in Indiana State. He's an underrafted
free agent and he was a guy that when all
these injuries started to happen in training camp, it was
(26:57):
Jonathan as an underracted free agent that started getting first
team reps and everybody's attention, and we'll see him. The
other guy that we'll see at corner is Chris Lamon's
and Chris is a really good story. Chris has spent
the last couple of years with the team, but wasn't
here for the entirety of the off season. Was brought
in early in training camp, played very well in the preseason,
(27:19):
but didn't make the fifty three man roster. They bring
him back to the practice squad and you can now
kind of be elevated a couple three times during the
course of the year from the practice squad to the
active roster, and that is the case for him for
tomorrow's game. So again, can the Colts play as well
defensively really without Mooney Ward? That's one of the questions
(27:41):
we have going into tomorrow's game against the.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
Broncos four or five start. Make sure you're there, called
Greg in the post game show.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Around the state, certainly around the Central Indiana area, do
you mind talking to me about high school football, talking
about the announcement of Rmal and sinder.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Grove rejoining the Mick. I'm sure you had some.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
Uh, you know, knowledge that that might happen, and I
wasn't surprised. I was I really wasn't surprised. It makes
total sense to me, but it still when you when
you're initially here, you suppose it's one of those things
where yeah, but they kind of understand why.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
But were you surprised at that?
Speaker 9 (28:28):
So sinder Grove going back had been kind of an
open secret. Everybody has kind of known that was going
to be the case, and I planned on that was
going to happen next year. Carmel's on that surprised me
again because I think they had navigated the waters of
being an independent very well. They had maintained the relationship
from a scheduling standpoint. They played the other six mixed
(28:51):
schools in basketball, they played for the mix of the
six mixed schools in football.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (28:57):
It was honestly part of the part of the what
kind and drove them apart was the difference in the
non revenue sports, the Olympic sports to speak, we're center
Grove and Carmel were prettificantly ahead of most of the
other six schools in a lot of those sports. But
I think for Carmel, I think they realize, you know
(29:18):
what we can be a part of this league. And
you know in football, he's a're gonna play two other
non conference games. And for Carmel, for example, that's Fishers
in Westfield, they're kind of set on the front.
Speaker 1 (29:31):
You know.
Speaker 9 (29:31):
Center Grove was the one that had struggled from a
football standpoint to find enough quality competition in state. You know,
they were starting to play a couple of years, they
played a lot of out of school that has sorted
the kind of turned the other direction. So Carmel was
a bit of a surprise. I think to some degree,
(29:52):
Carmel was kind of hedging their bet to make sure,
you know what, we don't want to leave football on
an island. You know, if for some Rea and the
mixed school no longer want to play us, now what
are we gonna do?
Speaker 8 (30:06):
Uh?
Speaker 9 (30:06):
And So, just to be honest with you, Bob, I'm
glad that cooler heads prevailed because you know that I
know everybody involved on both sides of this. That's kind
of why I am glad they kind of got together
and realized, you know what, let's all get back on
the same team here, because this is what is best
for everybody involved.
Speaker 8 (30:27):
Right.
Speaker 9 (30:27):
I'm so glad.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
That is the case in the minds of a lot
of people, though, Greg, what's lost is what you talked about,
where the uh the Olympic sports offerings, and you know
they're they've had Carmel and Seneerove have had great success,
uh in those particular sports, both boys and girls, and
uh sometimes you know, we get focused on football and basketball,
(30:52):
and I understand that, but you know, this is a
broad based conference that has excellence across the board, uh,
in a lot of different schools, and so there's a
whole lot going on in this type of move.
Speaker 9 (31:06):
There is, and I think there's ways around that. You know,
in a sport like well, let's use tennis for an example,
because Carmel is so good in that mastervere In Synergra
is not far behind, and you both expect them to
make you know, state finals on a regular basis, So
your league matches will now be kind of seven of
like fourteen, So that's like a large chunk. There's ways
(31:29):
around that. Like in baseball and softball, in most leagues
you would play twice. Maybe the compromise is you only
play one time, you only play a single round robin
and on a double round robin, which then allows you
to schedule other more common or like opponents to what
your level is going to be. And I think all
of that has yet to be worked out. But you know, again,
(31:53):
now trying to do is to go all right on
a sport by sport basis, how do we make this
the best competitive situation for as many of the members
as possible, And knowing all of the ads involved, my
guess is, Bob, that's going to happen.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Good for them, you know, I know it look having
honest honestly, everybody understands. I mean, being an AD, which
I was at the college level for a number of years,
scheduling is never easy at any level, quite frankly, and
it's also just something that you know, you've got to
(32:29):
think about what's good not only for you but for others.
And I'm happy that they've all decided to do this.
This This was a good move. I wasn't surprised again,
but I'm glad that they decided to do it.
Speaker 9 (32:41):
And again, the one thing that that I'm for knowing
that everybody makes the postseason in every sport, I think
it behooves you to play the best schedule you possibly
can and especially it comes down to football, where your
league schedule makes up so much of your you know,
seven of nine games, those two big in the mix
(33:03):
is what's best for everybody involved.
Speaker 1 (33:05):
Sure is all right, You're the best. I appreciate you
taking time to join me Saturday night. Have fun tomorrow.
It's always great to catch up with you. And don't
forget to call Greg tomorrow after the Colts matchup and
chat it up with him and talk about the big.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
Win that they're going to have. Greg. Thank you, have
a great night. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 9 (33:29):
Thanks coach.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Thank you coming up talking to some fever playoff basketball.
This is Network Indiana's Indiana Sports.
Speaker 2 (33:38):
Talk once again.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
I'm JAYSNS for this Indiana Sports Talk update. College football
currently ongoing the Purdue boiler Makers. They fell at home
thirty three to seventeen for their first loss of the season.
The Irish and Aggie sty'll doing battle and ranked matchup
up at Notre Dame Stadium thirty one apiece, currently with
Notre Dame currently in the red zone. The Saint Louis
(34:01):
Cardinals in Major League Baseball. They lead Milwaukee six to
two in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cubs
fell at Wrigley Field five to four against Tampa Bay.
The White Sox lost again as they fell three to
one to the Cleveland Guardians up in Cleveland, and the
Reds Underway now against the Athletics, they trail early on
three to two in the bottom of the second inning.
(34:24):
And Minor League Baseball the South Bend Cubs and the
Fort Wayne tin Caps, both wrapping up their season just
a few days ago, if not yesterday. The Indniapolis Indians
after a rain delay a few minutes ago bout half
hour ago, I should say the Indians get the win
over Iowa five to two, and they tie up the
and they tie up Toledo up top of the International
League East. As they get the win over Iowa, they
(34:47):
are back in action coming up tomorrow again against Iowa.
For the India eleven. They played today and they fell
against Rhode Island one to zero. The final score from
Carroll Stadium. Both teams had a red card on the game.
An own goal by a Musa in the sixty fourth
minute is the goal in that Rhode Island was able
to get the eleven or now a point behind Rhode
(35:08):
Island and for the final spot in the Eastern Conference
that the eleven will look to avenge that launch later
down the road and looks to try to get in
the playoffs. With a few games left in the season,
the Fever and action once again tomorrow at three pm.
But for once again for not reckoning into sports, I'm
Jays Hodge.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
Welcome back, everybody. Let's talk some basketball fever in the playoffs.
They haven't been there for a while, this tumultuous season
for them. They have managed to hang in claw their
way to an appearance in the playoffs. They should be
we should all be very proud of them, which we
are happy for them, and they begin play tomorrow afternoon
(35:51):
against Atlanta. With me from the field House files. The
man who knows much much more about it than the
rest of us do is Scott Agnes. Hello Scott, Hello, coach,
how are you doing? Not as well as you or
the fever, that's for sure.
Speaker 11 (36:10):
Yeah, I'll get started tomorrow, right. And here here's the
most telling part coach to me about all this. No
Caitlin Clark for the fever, obviously right. You're down five
players we knew of today we learned of another one
ye Ja Cup center Damirs Dante. Oh my god, the
concussion protocol. So she's out yet, by the way, and
yet in the three six matchup, this is the one
(36:31):
game that you can get over the air on ABC
because the Fever are still the number one.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
Draw, right, Yeah, they even without Caitlin, they're the number
one draw because of how they play and how The
thing that has impressed me more than anything Scott has
been how passionate they are about what they're doing, and
that is easily transmitted to everybody who comes in and
(36:59):
watches him play, watches them on TV. They just love
each other and they love the game, and it's kind
of a fun thing to watch.
Speaker 11 (37:07):
Yeah, And part of me is hesitant to mention this
because they're pros, they're paid to do this. But yeah,
but still, yes, they had every excuse in the world
for the season that goes sideway, every excuse not to
make the playoffs. Let's look ahead the next year, let's
make sure everybody else gets healthy.
Speaker 8 (37:24):
And here they are.
Speaker 11 (37:25):
And I would not be surprised in the least if
they win a series. Not at all.
Speaker 1 (37:29):
Wouldn't surprise me because they strike me character wise as
being a type of ladies who are in a locker room,
you know, look at one another and and look in
their eye, look you in the eye, and go, I
trust you, I believe in you, and you can count
on me to do the same thing.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
And I think they have that kind.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Of special bond that connects them in ways that other
teams don't have.
Speaker 11 (37:57):
Yeah, the three things to me that really stand out
about this group because how well they communicate. I acknowledge
that in the first preseason game at that time, sixty
or eleven players were brand new. Second one to the
other thing is how hard playing they are. You wonder
about that. You bring in an entire new coaching staff,
what does this look like? What's the chemistry and continuity
(38:18):
of this bunch? And then the third thing that we've
clearly learned to your point that you mentioned is how
they continue to pour into one another. And Kelsey Mitchell
likes repeating where all we're got, we're all we need,
and let's go from here. And she's one of the
top three scorers in the league, going to be first
team All WNBA, Leah Boskin, it can do well and
you never and a player like Natasha Howard, she's been
(38:38):
in the league twelve years, made it now in the
postseason eleven times, so that, know how is important when
you go against an Atlanta team, which a first year
head coach.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
Yeah, to go back to Natasha, there's a reason why
she's been in the playoffs that many years. That's not coincidental.
There's a reason for that. And I also think that
you know, you have excuse me, you have star player
and Alijah Boston star player in Kelsey Mitchell, I mean
(39:08):
legitimate first team All Pro and they played like it,
and you can fill in. You have competent people that
can fill in around them, but those two especially can
step up and make some things happen for you on
a consistent basis.
Speaker 11 (39:24):
Yeah, with Kelsey number one, she's been leading them in
the scoring. But secondly, I think we've seen her growing away.
But in terms of leadership, in terms of instilling confidence
in other players, I think those are roles maybe she
didn't need to do or you know, allowed others to do,
but realize, hey, look, somebody's got to do it right.
And I'm the most veteran player along with Natasha out here,
(39:46):
and both of them are a little quieter but have
had to speak up for the rest of the group.
And then Aliyah and I still see a lot more
for her to be able to do when you are
at full strength. So obviously not this year, but with her,
we we haven't seen much of that one to five
pick and roll action with the with the little pocket pass.
Speaker 2 (40:05):
Hey, Scott, right off, Yeah, Scott, I hate to interrupt you.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
I need you to hang on through a short break. Okay, okay,
we'll come back, talk more fever basketball. Scott Agnes from
the Fieldhouse Files on Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Welcome back. This is Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 1 (40:21):
We resume our conversation with Scott Agnes from the field
House Files. When we get smarter about the fever, all
you gotta do is go to the Fieldhouse Files and
you're automatically smarter.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Scott.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
Obviously, we've been talking about the playoff matchup with Atlanta.
Tell me how they've done against Atlanta in the regular season.
Speaker 11 (40:43):
Yeah, so it's very hot, coach, in that they met
in the preseason two of the first three games, three
of the first nine for the first twenty well, thanks
all the fever injuries outside of Caitlin really happened after
that fact, So right, I really think this is one
of them in the head to head that you're not
able to glean too much from the head to head
season series and all this because we've seen Atlanta change
(41:06):
their starting lineup, that you've seen them evolve a little bit.
But the main thing is the Fever and how much
they have obviously changed a great.
Speaker 2 (41:12):
Deal and thank goodness they changed that format. My goodness.
Speaker 11 (41:17):
Uh yeah, last year with Hill Oh you understand it
in the past, right and a league that was still
trying to type its feet. You want to limit travel, Well,
here's the next challenge though, becomes Uh, there's been some
issues trying to get the right charter flights, and the
Fever were a little bit worried if they got to Vegas,
they may play at three o'clock local time, which would
(41:37):
be noon out there, and then they'd have to wait
until the next day to get a charter back. So
while things are getting better and more professional and such,
there's still some kings to shake out here now a
year into the charter flight system.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
But the good thing is the indie fans get a
chance to see them, and obviously it'll be sold out
without without question, but there is that's an important factor
for this group.
Speaker 11 (42:06):
Yeah, it's something that they obviously were unable to get
last year right with Connecticut. So this will be the
first home playoff game for the franchise in almost a
decade back to mawenty sixteen when Stephanie White was the
head coach the last time for the Fever here, and
so that will be significant. The other telling point I
think in the league's development here is some of the
arenas are booked. Golden State can't play in their arena, Atlanta,
(42:28):
they're playing in their arena. But right, you better believe
with Caitlin and the Fever they would much rather move
back right farm like they did right in the regular season.
There's a dual lipa concert, and so it's limited to
the you know, the thirty five hundred seats here at
College Park coming up tomorrow?
Speaker 2 (42:43):
Wow, all right? Game time? Is it three? Right? Three
o'clock ABC?
Speaker 11 (42:48):
Yep, So this can be the lead in for sports
fans before the full soccer game there at four o'clock.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
No question, I will do something I never do on
Sundays that I'll be I'll be inside sitting in front
of a TV watching sports, uh and telling myself I
need to do all this because you know this is
show preparation, as we like to say.
Speaker 11 (43:13):
I'll tell you what, though, with this weather we've had
lately and coming up, it's gonna be hard to keep
you off the golf course or wherever outside on a walk,
just giving that humidity's finally gone away.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
Right, well, it's always good to have a pool. We
have found that to be the case. That's that I
hear it calling me right now anyway, So all right,
Scott Scott Agnes field House files, go there, get smarter
about the fever and the pacers. Scott, thanks to the call.
Have a fantastic weekend. I appreciate it you too, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
Coming up top of the hour, school board update, and
then we're back talking more ball. Jase Hodge is coming
up with a school board update. This is Indiana Sports
Talk
