Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana's Sports
Talk on Bob Lovell and it's brought to you by
Indiana Donor Network. Coming up, we're going to talk with
Matt Taylor from the Indianapolis Colts. Also going to spend
a little time talking about college football and more talk
about the fever.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is a busy night and we're glad you're with us.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
The star of the show, though it's time for him,
it's Network Indiana's Nathaniel Finch.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Coach lovel Caleb Zuber.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
It's a pleasure to be with you both, Nathaniel Finch
from our downtown Indianapolis studios on Monument Circle. With not
much to talk about tonight, Man, I am kidding at
is college football Week one? And boy was it glorious today.
How about the Indiana Hoosiers getting a win today at home?
The twentieth ranked team in the country after making the
playoffs last year, they're going to try to improve on that.

(00:52):
According to kurtz Signetti, twenty seven to fourteen to win
today against Old Dominion. Maybe not quite the blowout that
the team would have hoped. At least that's according to
the head coach.

Speaker 5 (01:03):
I'd called a pedestrian win at best. A lot of
kind of weird things happened in the first half, but
we took control of the game and really had him
at the point where we could have just put him away,
and we were unable to. And that was what was
disappointing kind of to me.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
Now it may sound like it, but that is not
a clip from coach level about twenty five thirty years ago. Instead,
that was Kurt Signetti today after the twenty seven of
fourteen win over Old Dominion. New quarterback from MCL Fernando
Mendoza nearly two hundred yards passing, did not throw a
touchdown or an interception, but he ran for a touchdown
in the contest, and they win and beat the Monarchs

(01:38):
twenty seven to fourteen. There it was a great start
to the Barry Odemara thirty one to zero. The boiler
Makers with the win at ross Aid Stadium today over
the Ball State Cardinals, they blank ball stayed and again
it is certainly a team in the.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Cardinals that will be better than this.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Outmanned against the boiler Makers kind of judge them once
maction starts, but how out the win for the Boilermakers
today in the atmosphere at ross Age Stadium.

Speaker 6 (02:04):
That place will be one of the toughest atmospheres in
college football when we get this still rolling. Man, I'm very,
very thankful to have the opportunity to coach in that stadium.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
I about that.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
The new coach, Barry Odom, his new quarterback Ryan Brown,
the official starter now after maybe a couple spots starts
last year, over three hundred yards passing, two passing touchdowns,
one rushing touchdown. Brown looked good. The entire boiler Maker
team look good. They scored thirty seconds in early often
and in bunches. Also in Division one football inside the

(02:35):
state of Indiana, Alt Barrezo with the win sixty seven
to ten. They had a thirty five point third quarter.
My goodness, sixty seven to ten. The Beacons beat Virginia Lynchburg.
Not quite the same story for the Butler Bulldogs thirty
eight to fourteen a loss against Northern Iowa. There they
can look at a few of the big time games

(02:56):
here still ongoing. How about LSU and Clemson, a Top
ten matchup that one tied at ten about midway through
the third quarter. The big one today Texas and Ohio State,
and it was the third ranked Buck Guys with the
win at home fourteen to seven over Arch Manning. Yes,
that is Colts legend Peyton Manning's nephew, Cooper's son in Texas.

(03:16):
The top team ranked heading into this preseason fourteen to
seven Ohio State with the win. One more top ten
matchup for you. This comes tomorrow though, and it is
the Notre Dame fighting Irish in Miami to play the You.
This will be seven thirty tomorrow night. Couple top ten
teams should be exciting. Now let's get away from college football.
Let's talk about some high school football. Yeah it's Saturday night,

(03:39):
but we still have some action here. How about this
big time matchup between Fort Wayne, Bishop Lewis and Andrean.
And it was a thirteen to zero win for the
Fight in fifty nine ers Andrean with the upset lures
now the top ranked team heading into the season. They've
lost twice now in two weeks. Newcastle, the thirty five
to zero win over Jay County Rochester from Illinois comes

(04:02):
in to play Gibson Southern and Gibson Southern just outmatch
there forty two to twenty one. The final Finally, Bowman
Academy beats col him at Christian twenty eight to sixteen.
Those are your four high school games tonight. In Major
League Baseball, the Cups put up a few runs in
a hurry, four to one. The lead now in Colorado
against the Rockies, top of the sixth inning.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
There.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
As far as the games across the Midwest that have
already concluded, coach, your Cardinals get a win four to
two at Great American Ballpark over Andrew Abbott and the Reds.
The Guardians at home get to win over the Mariners,
and the Tigers fall to Kansas City three to one.
The final score there. Nathaniel Finch with plenty more to
talk about throughout the night. Indiana Sports Talk.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Welcome back everyone, This is Indiana Sports Talk. Let's talk
about the Colts a little bit more. The voice of
the Indianapolis Colts, Matt Taylor, joins us. Matt, thanks for
taking time to join me. I know you have some
free time now just a little bit because of the
uh you know, roster has said, practices have been have concluded,

(05:04):
camp has broken and we're getting ready for the opener
next Sunday.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
So you got a little bit of time here, don't.

Speaker 7 (05:10):
You a little bit, a little bit absolutely a little
bit of a free weekend here, and you know, all
of those, like you said, those necessary evils are behind us.
You know, training camp and the roster cuts ninety to
fifty three and then the three preseason games. All of
them are necessary. They definitely serve a purpose. There's steps
along the way, but it feels good to finally be here.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
I'm not gonna lie, you.

Speaker 7 (05:34):
Know, getting ready for the start of the regular season.
And you know, once the guys get back into the
building on Monday for kind of that first stepping stone
of a regular season week, it's it's gonna feel good
going into the week one game against the Miami Dolphins
and you know, kind of just seeing what you got.
You know, we always say that week week Week one

(05:55):
is kind of a mixture of or at least it
can be a mixture of Christmas and Halloween. Right Christmas Day,
because you got all these new toys, right, We're going
to see what we got. We're going to see what
works and you know how much fun we can have.
And then it could also be Halloween, like, oh man,
we thought we were good here, we don't have enough
depth there, it can kind of be a nightmare depending

(06:17):
on how it goes. So the Colts over the years
have had their fair share of Christmas and Halloween week one.
So we'll see how you know, this year's opening game
goes for the Colts against Miami.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
All right, So having said that, you know, you had
expectations going in to camp, and now you've gotten through
that and you've made that the roster has been set everyone.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
You know, the maneuvers have been made personnel wise.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Are there still some areas of concern that the Colts
have coming into the opener against Miami?

Speaker 7 (06:48):
Yeah? I think, you know, there's definitely strengths and weaknesses
on the roster, at least, you know, places that give
you pause compared to others. You know, I think I
think linebacker is one of those things where I'm I'm
not quite sure that depth of Colts have because initially
they kept only four linebackers on the original fifty.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Three man roster.

Speaker 7 (07:07):
They kind of tweaked that earlier this week with a
signing of Chad MoMA. They picked him up off of
waivers from Jacksonville. Gives him some depth and some more
special teams flexibility there. You know, tackle is something that
you're still kind of watching too. You know, Luke to
Newda made the roster. I think Jalen Travis, who is

(07:28):
a rookie draft pick for the Colts Day three kid
out of Iowa State, He's going to be kind of
their their swing tackle, you know, to play either left
side or right side in a pinch if the Colts
get banged up there. But again, he's a rookie and
outside of him, there's not a whole lot of proven
depths on the roster at that position, and that's an

(07:49):
important spot we all know. I mean, depths gets tested.
You know, war of attrition up front is something that
you always have to deal with throughout the course of
seventeen games. But I think, you know, honestly, I think
I think that's about it as I candidly go through
the roster in my head, I mean, there's not a
whole lot of chinks in the armor, to be honest

(08:11):
with you, And I think that's what the Colts have
been thinking in the back of their mind this entire
offseason as it related to the quarterback competition. You know,
they knew they've missed the playoffs for years in a row.
But they've had a.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Really good core roster.

Speaker 7 (08:26):
I mean, a lot of these guys are in the
primes of their career. And again, it's not all about
one guy. It's not all about just the quarterback. But
it's a really important position, and that's why they wanted
an open quarterback competition to go along with the roster that,
for the most part, was in a pretty good spot
to try to compete with the big boys, if you will,
in the AFC.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
I think everyone understands your quarterback position is the most
important position on the squad.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
But I also think that if you're going to be
a playoff type team, one of the other things you
have to be solid at is you have to have
quality depth across the board. And I think they feel
pretty good about their depth.

Speaker 7 (09:05):
Yeah, I think, you know, in a lot of ways,
it's a really deep roster. You know, offensive line outside
of tackle is good. I think secondary is still really good.
It may not be the names that we thought we
were gonna see in the secondary at the beginning of
training camp, but it's still deep in that even though
it's been tested because of injuries, the Colts haven't missed

(09:27):
around at all. In addressing the depth in that position group.
You know, Justin Waley goes on i IR with an
ACL injury. Juju Brinz gets banged up and he's no
longer on the team. By the way, Jalen Jones gets
banged up. The Colts just didn't sit by Bob and
bring in and I don't want to, you know, throw

(09:47):
any disrespect to this, I'm about to stray, But they didn't.
They didn't just go out and bring in another undrafted
rookie free agent to kind of kick the tires right.
They they bring in a guy like Xavian Howard and
they trade a draft pick for mc Blackman. So they're
definitely prioritizing the secondary because of what it means to
the defense in terms of how it's supposed to operate.

(10:08):
It's supposed to operate back to front in lou An
Arumo's scheme. In order for it to really work, they've
got to have savvy, experienced playmakers in that part of
the defense, you know, to get their hands on the
football and to make plays.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
He's Matt Taylor.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
Colts opened up a week from tomorrow against Miami at
downtown Indianapolis. Matt, thanks for taking time. Enjoy the time off.
We'll talk to you later.

Speaker 7 (10:35):
I appreciate you, Bob, thank you so much.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
Thank you.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
A quality win for the Indiana Hoosiers, twenty seven to fourteen.
Quality in the score. You get to win. You're one
to zero on the year. It's not quite what Kurt
Signetti had thought, the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers,
speaking with Don Fisher Learfield the IU Radio Network post game.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
I'd called a pedestrian win at best. A lot of
kind of weird things happen in the first half. We
took control of the game and really had him at
the point where we could have just put him away,
and we were unable to. And that was what was
disappointing kind of to me.

Speaker 4 (11:09):
That no chakra there. SIGNETI a guy that always wants more. So,
twenty seven to fourteen not quite the score he was
looking for. The Hoosiers at home beat Old Dominion today.
As for the Purdue boiler Makers, a little in state
game against Ball State and the Cardinals. This from West Lafayette,
thirty one to zero your final score. The boiler Makers

(11:29):
start the barriodom Era on the right foot, and they
did so just thirty seconds into the ball game a
touchdown pass Ryan Brown found Antonio Harris streaking down the
sideline and that was very fun. Actually, our mod branch
I beg your pardon. He had three catches over one
hundred yards and that long forty nine yard touchdown just
thirty seconds into the game. A fun one from West Lafayette.

(11:51):
Elsewhere in Division one, Valparrezo geinst the win sixty seven
to ten against Virginia Lynchburg. Not quite the same case
for the out their Bulldogs. They fall drop their season
opener thirty eight to fourteen to the final there at
Northern Iowa against a tough Panthers squad. Take a look
at some high school football. We did have a few
games today and the big one andre And defeating Bishop Lewis.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
Thirteen to zero.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
That score and now Lewres, after being the preseason number one,
drops two straight.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
Nathaniel Finch.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Welcome back everyone.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
This is Network Indiana's Indiana Sports tuk Fever with a
huge win last night in LA with me to talk
about that game and the playoff push Field House Files.
Scott Agnes, Hello Scott.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Hello, coach, how you doing doing great? Doing great? Not
doing as well as the fever.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
Though they're doing great, injuries are still an issue, but
they just keep They just keep battling and came up
with a very important win last night.

Speaker 8 (12:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (12:54):
They just continue to be resilient and continue to find
a way. And again, I just think is as a
group that they keep hit after hit. I mean one
player was back last game, Chloe Bibbie was it didn't play,
and I was back on the injury report. Yea, yeah,
you got about five six players on the injury report

(13:17):
at this point.

Speaker 8 (13:17):
Three.

Speaker 7 (13:18):
I think that I've had surgery on this season. But
what's been impressive is how they've rallied together and to
go on on the road in LA, a late game
for all of them, and to pull it out against
a team that has been rolling in is very much
also fighting for their playoff chances.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
I would think, you know the old coach and me says, look,
Coach White, and I've been in situations where my roster's
been depleted. Coach Coach White has some she can manage eight, nine,
ten ladies and not have to worry about playing time,
trying to find minutes for some people. You know how
it is you want to keep everybody involved in in game,

(14:00):
and you know what their egos to suffer because they
haven't played as much as they think they need to.
That's not an issue right now. Everybody's we need everybody
to give as minutes because we don't have a.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Lot of them. And I think the other part of it,
too is that from a coaching standpoint, you with a
short rotation, everybody knows they're going to play. Everybody knows
that what they do is important, and that is a
way of galvanizing a group of ladies, no matter how
small the roster is or how big it is.

Speaker 7 (14:28):
Yeah, it is all hands on deck, certainly for this team,
and unfortunately has been that way for more than a
month now at this point. And who have available better
be ready.

Speaker 8 (14:38):
And that's the biggest thing.

Speaker 7 (14:39):
The latest example is Odyssey Simms, who's on a hardship contract.
We'll need to get a new contract here very soon.
I think as soon as tomorrow, by the way, another
different thing for the front office nonetheless to figure out.
But she's scoring twenty two points here, nineteen points there
last Brock with the final five to help them complete

(15:00):
the comeback to go ahead basket. And you know what
made it even sweeter, It was against the last teams
she played for at the LA Sparks, So not only
did she just want it, but you wanted a little more.
As much as players don't want to admit that, I.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
Don't think there's a benefit. One of the things I
think the Fever benefit from is that there are.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
A lot of talented players out there.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
Because you hear all the talk about they need to
expand their rosters, they need more people. There are a
lot of women who are talented enough to play. Circumstances
weren't in their favor and they aren't on a team,
and this is an opportunity for them right here.

Speaker 7 (15:41):
Yeah, for all those people, including myself, both hands raised
talking about expansion and more so though of the roster
and not of the league. This is your prime example.
These necessarily probably would not be your starters on other teams,
but I think showing they could be reliable back ups
to help form a team and they are good GLO

(16:01):
pieces as well. Like the other thing that hadn't been
said about any of these players they have brought in
is none of them have been problems or issues or
you know, it just was a bad fit and they
send him ally changes what they looked like because a
different player at a different position got hurt and they
need a little bit more size versus the guard spot.
But they got to expand the rosters. Coach coming into

(16:22):
the next collective.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Oh, I would think when they're twelve roster spots is
not enough.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
I think when they're you know, they're bargaining on contracts.
Obviously everyone's focused on on pay, as they should be.
I would say it's a significant uh situation too in
terms of number of roster spots.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
I think that I think that goes a long way
to doing it all right, So.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
I'm not very smart, So tell me what's going on
with them relative to the playoffs.

Speaker 7 (16:50):
Well, first of all, this is absolutely the playoff push
is there? Right? They got a three game road trip
out West, one of three games complete. They have just
f I have games left in the Wow season here
and already three teams have clinched, three teams are ruled out.
So right now you have spots.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Four through ten for pushing for.

Speaker 7 (17:14):
The teap eight spot that are you know, so five
of them that are unclaimed at this point. The Fever
are currently slotted in six, but they are about three
or four teams right there that are two to two
to a half games out from each other, and so
if the Fever can win about half their games out,
I think they'll be certainly good. And a couple of

(17:35):
those are at home, a couple of them are against
lesser teams, so they are in a very good spot.
Should they continue to handle their business as we would expect.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
Well, the I've made it what five minutes or so
into this interview and haven't brought up her name, So
let me bring it up in that context. Will they
get relief roster wise from Caitlin Clark?

Speaker 2 (17:56):
Who are we getting closer and closer?

Speaker 7 (17:59):
Yeah? I think now it's a reasonable time to have
this conversation for sure, because she's ramping up her activity
level a lot more. She's participating in every shoot around
over the last week, which I think would be four
times including tomorrow.

Speaker 8 (18:15):
For example.

Speaker 7 (18:17):
I assume she took part in practice out in La
here or shoes me in San Francisco, it would be
here today, And so I think you're getting closer. Stephanie
White said she needed to see Caitlin in full activity
and it doesn't have to be a practice because they're
really not practicing much right now. She just needs to
see her take contact, be physical, be guarded at full court,

(18:40):
work with teammates, right, And I think one of the
underrated things in all of it is the unpredictability of movements.
And you can't simulate that as much when it's one
on zero or one on one. What everybody is doing
when they're moving on the floor, and how do you
react And the latest thing, obviously is with her ankle,
and so how do you move and pivot and power
off of that? And so I think there's a very

(19:01):
good chance, Goach that you'll see her later this week
if she continues to progress as she has in the
last week.

Speaker 2 (19:07):
I sure hope.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
So for her sake, you know, she's got to be
beyond frustrated. I'm not even sure how she handles is
quite frankly, as competitive as she is, not just in
basketball but everything, to not be out there and be
a part of the experience with their teammates that they're close,
they love one another, and to not be a part
of that has to be killing her.

Speaker 7 (19:28):
Yeah, And there's so many layers to this, but the
one I go to, beyond her competitiveness, is this is
new to her before. Yes, she has not missed a
game that mattered until I think it was sophomore year
of high school. So she was good at the end
of high school, great at four years at Iowa, great
the pounding of last year with the forty game regular season,

(19:51):
and this year. I think one of the things now
she's had to do coach is learn how to rehab,
learn how to come back from an injury. That too,
in its own right, has become a new thing for
her to experience. But yeah, she is really wanting to
be out there and play. And who could blame her,
especially when this team is right there in the thick
of things for the playoffs and then come postseason. Who knows.

Speaker 2 (20:16):
I mentioned this earlier on the show. I mean, how
even if.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
You're not a basketball fan, how could you not enjoy
and respect the story of the Fever and of Caitlin
Clark this year? How could you not respect what they've accomplished.
I know they have a lot more to go, but
to this point, how can you not be a big
fan of that?

Speaker 8 (20:38):
Totally agree.

Speaker 7 (20:39):
I think the only reason you wouldn't appreciate is that
if you're turning off the TV, yeah, Caitlin's not playing.
If you're aware of it. Yeah, absolutely, Look, tomorrow will
be gaining forty of the season. Last year they played
forty games total. They already have exceeded last year's win total,
and that's with far better health. That's with Caitlyn playing
every game, Joeliah Boston being out there every single night,

(21:03):
and so with Caitlin only playing thirteen games this season.
A player who finished fourth in MVP put voting last
year a significant piece, and you're playing with three hardship players.
Another player signed a month ago. And by the way,
the underrated thing too, your top three eight. You signed
that you expected to have a significant role in Dewana Bonner.
She left the team before you reached a month end

(21:24):
of the season. Right, You didn't expect that either, And
Stephanie White has kept this group together coach. They have
more as many wins, the most wins that they've had
since the twenty twelve championship team back to back consecutive
twenty win seasons. This is a great story, even though
it's probably not going to have to finish for many
had expected or potentially hoped for.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
He's Scott Agnes. If in fact, you have not been
on the fieldhouse file site. There's something wrong with you.
He is really really talented.

Speaker 2 (21:55):
I love the site. Scott.

Speaker 1 (21:57):
Thank you as always. I appreciate you doing this. Have
a fit, fantastic weekend.

Speaker 7 (22:01):
You got it, appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (22:04):
Coming up, we're going to talk some IU football. That's
the key right now. Who's yours opening up with a win.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
We'll talk with.

Speaker 1 (22:11):
John Herrick after this scoreboard update on Indiana Sports Stark.

Speaker 4 (22:15):
Nathaniel Finch Network, Indiana the start of college football this afternoon,
and the only person happier than me, well maybe Barry Otam,
the Purdue boiler Maker's new head coach.

Speaker 6 (22:26):
What an exciting start to this season and the way
that our kids started really offensively, defensively, just about how
we had it scripted. And we're hoping to get an
opportunity for playmakers to go do some things early and
they did. I'm excited for our team to be one
to zero. Can't thank the fans enough for what it
felt like running out of Tiller Tunnel and ross Age Stadium.

Speaker 9 (22:46):
It was electric.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
The former UNLV head coach now taking over for this
Purdue program and starting it off on the right foot.
Thirty one to zero. The win over our producer, Caleb
z Almamater, the ball State Cardinals man.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
How about this one?

Speaker 4 (23:00):
Ryan Brown, the starting quarterback for the boiler Makers, over
three hundred yards passing, two touchdowns.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
Through the air, one on the ground.

Speaker 4 (23:08):
Devin Makabee, the star running back, a chance to be
one of the better backs in the Big Ten. He
scored a touchdown today as well a total team effort.
The Boilers scored early, and it did so often also
in for the twentieth ranked Indiana Hoosiers. They get the
season started against Old Dominion and Bloomington today twenty seven
to fourteen. The victory there. ODU scored first. They also

(23:32):
scored in the fourth quarter to make the score a
little bit closer. But certainly not the game that Kurt
Signetti was hoping for as head coach. He called it
pedestrian and certainly had some words to say to the
postgame locker room if I were to guess. His new quarterback,
Fernando Mendoza performed pretty well two hundred yards passing, though
he didn't throw a touchdown or an interception, he did

(23:52):
run for a touchdown, so did his running back Kaylan Black.
He had ninety two yards in a touchdown. Roman Hemby
had over one hundred yards on the ground as well.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
Welcome back everyone, I'm Bob Lovel. This is Indiana Sports Suck.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
Are you twenty seven fourteen winners over Old Dominion today
with me from the IU Sports Network, John Herrick. John,
thanks so much for the win. I'm curious now, how
many people have asked you about the word pedestrian after
today's game.

Speaker 9 (24:24):
You know, I'm a few, and I've talked about it
with a few of my friends. I took to the
game today and I understand the concern. But you know,
the truth of the matter is, people got to remember
it's week one.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
There's a lot of right comers on game.

Speaker 9 (24:38):
And I mean, look it, it's getting five hundred and
two yards of total offense is pedestrian. I can't wait
to see what Elite looks like. So I look, there
were some bad moments. I'll give you that. That's long
touchdown runs they gave up to Colton Joseph not good
blown assignments on both of those. But also there were

(25:01):
two plays where normally, if Fernandoman was just a little
more accurate, he would have had a touchdown pass thrown,
and one of them. One of them he hit right
on the money to Omar Cooper and he just drops it.
So I mean there's two or three plays that happened
in the game, fifty to fifty balls that if they
go Indiana's way, they win this game by a lot

(25:22):
more than thirteen. So it's a starting point. It's certainly
not an end point. It's week one and then you just,
you know, you pack it up and you get ready
for Keennessaw State on Friday Saturday.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
Think, yeah, what you said is well, is well stated
and right on point. And I think the other thing
everyone forgets. Look, this team had a great year last year.
I mean they were tremendous, and so the expectations have
been bumped up now there considerably, and so yeah, you know,
coach could I think Coach Signetti would feel the way

(25:55):
he felt, and I understand that as a as a
former coach, but I think he also RECOGNI It's is that,
as you point out, it is week one, there's been
a little bit of turnover in the roster. You lost
some key guys from last year. I think Mendoza is
going to be an exciting guy. I don't think there's
any question about and I understand why they recruited.

Speaker 2 (26:17):
Him as heavily as they did. I think this team
has a big, big upside quite frankly, yeah.

Speaker 9 (26:23):
And the other thing is too they dominated time of
possession forty one minutes they had the ball and they
and also too is Kurt Signetti even said in his
postgame press conference that the plan may not have been
the best. So I mean, he's going to sit down
with his coaching staff this week the way at least
he made it sounded, sit down as coaching staff and
go what could we have done to make the plan better?

(26:47):
And again, I don't think they're going to come out
and have as many goal line issues next week as
they did this week, and especially since they were such
a good goal line team and red zone offer last
year probably and one of the best bred zone teams
in the country. So a lot of things were out
of character for them today. But that was some of
the ugly. But the good thing was they only had

(27:09):
three penalties, they had the ball for forty one minutes,
they went ten of seventeen on third down conversions, they
had thirty first downs and Old Dominion had ten, so
it's not like it was one of those games where
they just barely won and were holding on to survive
for dear life. It was a game where they dominated
most of it and they just didn't punch it in

(27:30):
and they got into the red zone. So you got
the win. But you go into this, you go into
this week of practice with a lot of stuff to
work on, and you came out of the game with
no injuries. So that's the other big, big positive and
upside from today.

Speaker 1 (27:45):
I think that may be as good as it gets
right there, as you didn't get anybody hurt.

Speaker 2 (27:48):
And I was impressed with al. You know, defensively, your
first game, you're going.

Speaker 1 (27:53):
Up against an option team, and you know that's that's
that's assignment based football, and that's not easy, damn. Even
though you have I'm prepared, that's still not easy to defend.
And I thought they did it quite well.

Speaker 9 (28:04):
Yeah, and to your point, Bob about the option, I mean,
how many times did the quarterback for Old Dominion, Colton
Joseph make a move and act like he was going
to hand the ball off and then he kept it.
He pulled the camera, he would pool the big ten
camera kan he would fool the people watching the game.
He would certainly fool us. So it was yeah, they
ran they ran up pretty you know, a pretty sophisticated

(28:25):
type offense. They're not as talented as Indiana, but they
are better than I think Indiana's Week one opponent last year,
which was Florida International. And you're working out the kinks
with a with a pretty new roster. So this is
we're talking about a coach and Kurt Signetti that has
you know, one hundred and thirty one wins to just

(28:47):
thirty seven losses. You don't get that kind of a
record if you just maintain things or if you regress.
And no, he's his teams have consistently proven over the
years that they wherever they start, they always find a
way to grow and swing upwards. And I expect this
team to do that as well.

Speaker 1 (29:06):
I don't think there's any question, John. I just think that, well,
this is a good, solid football team. Tell me what
you thought about Mendoza and some of the other guys today.

Speaker 9 (29:16):
Well, I think the thing to keep in mind about
Fernando and Mendoza is that Fernando was nine of eighteen
in the first half. He finished eighteen of thirty one,
so that means he went nine of thirteen passing in
the second half. He got more accurate as the game
went on, and he carried the ball well. I mean
that I'm not nothing against Curtis Rourke because Curtis Rourke
was certainly a fabulous quarterback for Indiana last year. But

(29:38):
because of the torn acl he was playing on and
the lack of his mobility and the fact that he
was such a great passer, he didn't run the football.
He didn't give you that dimension. Fernando Mendoza still gives
you that dimension. And the other thing is too. Indiana's
number one wide receiver is Elijah Surrat. Elijah Surrat didn't
have a catch in the first half, and yet he

(30:00):
still finished with three catches for forty four yards. So
that allowed I think Mendoza to develop his chemistry with
the other receivers. You know, Okay, if the number one
guy is going to get shut down or we can't
get him opened a lot all game, that's going to
allow us to open things up for the other backs
and then for the other backs and receivers. Speaking of

(30:20):
running backs, how about Roman Hemby. I mean, this guys
to be This guy used to be an Indiana Hoosier
killer when he played at Maryland, including last year when
Indiana beat Maryland. Henby had over one hundred yards rushing
and a huge touchdown run against Indiana. Now he's playing
for the Hoosiers and he's got all the makings of
a top tier back, as he finished with one hundred
and eleven yards today. And all three running backs are impressive,

(30:45):
Kaylon Black and Lee BB terrific. BB fumbled in the
first half and then he bounced back with a huge
second half. So there's a lot of good things to
go around. But I know everybody's gravitating towards the final score.
They don't like the way the final score looks, and
I understand that. But they did a lot of other
really good things and some good things to build upon

(31:06):
for the coming weeks.

Speaker 1 (31:08):
John Harrick with this, we're talking about I use win
to open up the season over a.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
I think a very impressive ODU team tonight.

Speaker 1 (31:17):
All right, So you mentioned Kennesaw State coming up next week,
and then Indiana State to finish off the non conference
in September twentieth's at home against Illinois, and they get
right into it. I know, I want to get ahead
of it myself, but I think that Illinois game looms large.

(31:38):
That's a better Illinois team and it's gonna get This
is going to be an interesting year, an exciting year,
I think for everybody.

Speaker 9 (31:46):
Yeah, And I think that when you look at Illinois
and you look at the fact that Luke Altmeyer is
a dual purpose running a dual purpose quarterback and throw
it and run it, well, then it's a good thing
that you started out with Old Dominion to get to
get used to to get used to that. And again,
I think everybody's looking ahead to that. And you've got

(32:08):
these next two games though, to build and get ready
for it. But you also can't overlook these next two
opponents either.

Speaker 4 (32:15):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (32:16):
You know, Kennesaw State is not going to be easy,
and they they almost got to win last night. They
almost beat wake Forest and wake Forest got a late
field goal to win it ten to nine. But Kennesaw
State is going to come into Bloomington with the same
mindset Old Dominion did, and that is we can strike first,
we can try to put this team behind the eight
ball and see what they can what we can do

(32:36):
from there. And you know, obviously the talent and the
coaching of Indiana ended up winning the day, but you
I think there's still a lot to build around, and
I think is as long as they continue to build.
I think you know there's there's fewer returners on defense
for this team from last year's team than there are
on offense. The defense showed you a lot of upside,

(32:57):
and the offense they were just out of sync at times.
That rhythm and that continuity is going to only come
with more practice time, with more rhythm, thought. Fernando Mendoza
gave a great response to when he talked to reporters
after the game was over. He said, this isn't my standard,
this is not what I'm used to playing up to.
I didn't like my numbers, I didn't like the way
I played, But I know the offensive line and I

(33:20):
and the rest of the team are going to start
to gel. So I thought that I thought that everybody
liked the fact that they won, but didn't love the
fact about how they won. They just they leave themselves
a lot of room to move and a lot of
goals to aspire to.

Speaker 1 (33:34):
He's John Eric from the IU Sports Network. IU Wins
Today over Old Dominion twenty seven fourteen. John, thanks for
your time. I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (33:43):
Have a great weekend, not a problem, coach, Thank you.

Speaker 8 (33:46):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (33:48):
Coming up more football, we're going to talk about no
Trade Dame in their matchup tomorrow night against Miami.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
This is Indiana's Sports Talk, the.

Speaker 4 (33:56):
Daniel Finch with your network Indiana Scoreboard Update. We have
all the college football scores to give you Week one
of this glorious sport. But first let's take a look
at some scores in Major League Baseball. It's starting to
get the gut check time. At Coursefield. That is the
Chicago Cups four to three with a tight lead over

(34:16):
the thirty eight win Rockies, bottom of the eighth inning.
I'll keep you updated there. That means the Rockies get
two chances. The Cups will have one more chance up
to bat. Keep you updated on that one. As far
as the Midwest games that have already concluded, Coach of
Cardinals get a win at Great American Ballpark. They beat
the Cincinnati Reds four to two. The final there. The
White Sox fall, but boy, it was a good one

(34:38):
against the Yankees five to three in eleven innings. This
from Rate Field on the South Side. The White Sox
fall unfortunately there it's a win in Cleveland the Guardians
for the Mariners three in that one. The Tigers unsuccessful
in Kansas City cannot beat the Royals. Three to one
is the final score. In Minor League baseball. It's a

(34:59):
win for the Indianapolis Indians just a few blocks away
from our Monument Circle studios. It's a victory from Victory
Field two to one. A tight one there. The South
Bend Cubs at Peoria right now to play the Chiefs,
and boy can I wait to hear from Brendan King.

Speaker 3 (35:14):
This one is a good one. Bottom of the ninth inning.

Speaker 4 (35:17):
Peoria up to bat tied at four a piece. That's
gonna be a fun one. We will keep an eye there.
And then the fourt Wayne ten camps unfortunately fault tonight
at home against the Dayton Dragons five to two the
final score there. But again we will keep an eye
on the Chicago Cubs. We will keep an eye on
the South Bend Cubs. Plenty more coming at you in
just fifteen minutes. Nathaniel Finch Network, Indiana.

Speaker 2 (35:41):
Welcome back, everybody. We're talking football tonight.

Speaker 1 (35:43):
A lot of it's going on, continues to go on
tomorrow night. Everybody make sure you're tuned into the Notre
Dame Miami matchup with me to talk about that plus
all things Notre Dame. Our good friend, noted author, noted scholar,

(36:04):
the one and only doctor Lynn Clark Kello, Doctor Clark.

Speaker 8 (36:08):
Hi, Bob, how are you doing now? Less than twenty
four hours away? So the much anticipated weight is almost
over for Irish fans?

Speaker 2 (36:16):
Yeah, I would think. Listen, I haven't been to Miami
in a number of heat number of years, and when
I was there, I was much younger. But here's what
I remember, having more fun.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
Than you should be allowed to have when we were
down there. You know, at the time, one of my
best friends from high school was a pilot and he
was flying out of Miami and so we just you know,
he had a big, big boat that we needed to
spend some time on and yeah, so yeah, I can

(36:53):
imagine you spend a whole lot of time preparing for
the game.

Speaker 8 (36:57):
Well, maybe it's a good idea that I'm flying down tomorrow.
It's going to be in this trip, so no boats
for me, airports and rental cars. But we're looking forward
to it. And Bob three keys going into the game
for Notre Dame. Of course, all eyes on redshirt freshman CJ.
Carr at quarterback, who gets his first career start. Another

(37:17):
key will be the Irish defensive line.

Speaker 9 (37:19):
Now.

Speaker 8 (37:19):
They lost a lot of experience with the departure of
Riley Mills and Howard Cross junior, but Donovan Heinish, who
was named the team captain, and Jason Agne have emerged
as really the anchors of the defensive line now. Anya
is a very very interesting story. He took some time
away from football to deal with some mental issues, but
he has come back, earned his starting position, and those
two leaded defensive line against a very big and talented

(37:41):
offensive line of Miami ranked as one of the best
in the nation. And then third, the weather. It's going
to be hot and humid down in Miami. Rain is
expected in the afternoon, but it should dissipate around game time.
And Arcus Freeman was asking this Friday press conference about
rain and he says he's not worried about it. They
worked on some wetball drills and let's just play the
football game.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Yeah, that's the idea. It's raining for both teams. I
that's true. That's true, you know, so I wouldn't get
too wrapped up in it.

Speaker 1 (38:08):
I think one of the things going into this, and
you clearly know more about it than I do, is
that if you have a rookie quarterback, you need to
have your offensive line and your running game playing at
peak efficiency to take some of the pressure off of him.

Speaker 8 (38:22):
You do, you need to have everybody dialed in, and
if they are dialed in, all he needs to do
is just manage the game. Exact some explosive potential and
managing the game is something that Riley Leonard and Sam
Hartman did and that's good for Notre Dame. But it's
always good to have that option of somebody who can
go vertical and really emerge as kind of a big threat.

(38:44):
But right now, the threat's going in will be Jeremiah Love,
Heisman candidate, over a thousand yards rushing. All eyes will
be on him. So it'll be interesting to see what
Mike Denbrock, the offensive coordinator, kind of dials up in
that first drive, because I think the key in the
game will be the offensive draw the defensive drive for
the Irish to open the game, but also defensively because

(39:04):
if Notre Dame can stop the Miami run, this is
going to be a heck of a ball game. It's
going to come down to defense, and I've got the
Irish walking out of hard Rock Stadium with a twenty
seven to twenty four win.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
No, I think it's hard to get a gauge obviously
for everybody in the first game, and because a new
group you've lost Riley Leonard and others from a team
that they played for national championship. That's how good I'm
not exactly. I mean, you're closer to truth than I am.

(39:38):
It's hard to get a gauge on a team.

Speaker 2 (39:40):
Like this, especially on the road in a high profile
environment like this with a rookie quarterback. That's hard to
put a finger on.

Speaker 8 (39:49):
Baptism under fire. What a better way to get a
grasp on this Notre Dame team is how they respond
in a top ten matchup on the road with the
rookie quarterback. But if everybody can do their jobs, I
think good things will happen for Notre Dame. And if
the course we talk about it all the time, just
control the controllables, control the football, no mental mistakes, no turnovers.

(40:10):
If you can do that, just play the game, make
it another day at the office. Then this should be
a very close game. But Bob, there's also an Indiana
connection on the Miami team. Freshman tight end Brock Shot
out of Leo High School is listed fourth on their
depth chart. So hopefully we might see the who's your
native get a chance to play against the home state
Notre Dame team down in Miami.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
Notre Dame in Miami tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (40:32):
Make sure you watch it, Doctor Lynn Clark, as always,
thanks so much. Have a great weekend. Welcome back everybody.
This is Indiana Sports stuck. All right, Nathaniel Finch. I'm
not ignoring you tonight. Okay, okay, that's all right, Nathaniel,
I'm not ignoring you.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
We'll catch up in just a few minutes.

Speaker 1 (40:54):
But we you know, later on tonight we're going to
talk about high school football Week two. Wrapping up last night,
What a great night of high school football. If you
listen to the show last night, thank you very much.
It reminded me of back a few years. With the
call volume. It's been fantastic and I can't thank the

(41:15):
coaches enough and immedia colleagues of mine who call the show,
and I know, look it's frustrating. It's number one. You
can't get through number two. You're on hold a long time.
And and that's for me as the host. It's a
pleasant problem to have, and for coaches and media folks.

(41:36):
I know it gets frustrating, but you make the show.
It's not me, it's you, and thank you very much
for doing that. Tanner Camp from the Regional Radio Sports
Network is going to join me next hour. Paul Condrey
and I normally do this on Friday. Paul out tonight
and unable to be with me, and so Tanner is

(41:58):
stepping in and we're going to talk about to look
ahead to week number three.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
I just want you to think about this. At the
end of.

Speaker 1 (42:05):
Friday Nights games this Friday, we will have concluded one
third of the regular season.

Speaker 7 (42:12):
So let that.

Speaker 2 (42:13):
Let that sink in for just a second. Uh And
then when you know, when I go to the standard
line of where this thing's going quickly, really it really is.

Speaker 8 (42:23):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (42:23):
So join me later on tonight, Tanner Camp will join
me and talk about that. Plus we're gonna in the
middle of all the football, we're gonna talk about some racing.
Mark James uh the voice of the five hundred and
the NTT IndyCar Series, will join.

Speaker 2 (42:37):
Me from Nashville. UH last race of the season.

Speaker 1 (42:42):
UH Alex Bulow has already wrapped it up Poto Award.

Speaker 2 (42:47):
On the on the Poll. So Mark and I will
catch up and talk about UH.

Speaker 1 (42:51):
An exciting, a very exciting IndyCar series.

Speaker 8 (42:57):
UH.

Speaker 1 (42:57):
They wrap it up again tomorrow in Nashville, Tennessee, and
so we have that to continue to talk about. Also,
we continue to talk about college football. What a great,
great way to start the season if your IU, even
though coach wasn't necessarily excited about their performance, got to win.

(43:21):
If you're a Purdue fan, you get a chance to
do something you haven't done in a while, and that's celebrated.

Speaker 2 (43:25):
A great win. Opened up early, first offensive possession, go
big against ball State. Unfortunately for the Cardinals. Pretty wins
that one thirty one nothing. And remember coach Odams won
games in UNLV. He knows how to coach. Coming up though,

(43:45):
got a top to our.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
School board update with the man himself, mister Nathaniel Finch.
