Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
I'm Bob Lovell and it's brought to you by Indiana
Donor Network. With a lot of football and basketball to
talk about tonight, obviously the Big Ten Championship game going
on and a lot of basketball right now, though, we
turn it over to the busiest guy we know. He's

(00:20):
the star of our show. It's Network Indiana's Nathaniel Finch coach.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
A pleasure to be doing this show with you for
the first time in two months. Let's see if I
remember how to do it. Nathaniel Finch with you from
our downtown Indianapolis studios. Caleb zuver Hour, producer. A huge
day in Indianapolis in terms of sports. Let's start with
the Big Ten Championship right now at Lucas Oil Stadium.
At halftime, the Hoosiers trail number two Indiana down against

(00:47):
number one Ohio State ten to six. That score through
two quarters of play. Now, I you did strike first.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Here's saying hold it a minor los how's a football?
When up? Last week?

Speaker 2 (01:09):
That from Fox an interception of Julian Sayan of Ohio
State that turned into a field goal. I you would
then allow ten straight points. Ohio State leads ten to
six at halftime. Elsewhere in college football, a big day
of conference championships. Number three Georgia blows out number nine
Alabama twenty eight to seven. Is that final? Number four

(01:30):
Texas Tech over number eleven BYU probably kicking the Cougars
out of the college football playoff thirty four to seven.
Is that final? And then right now Duke over Virginia
fourteen to seven. What does all this mean for noted
aames chances to make the postseason. We'll talk about that
throughout this show. Coach level, and I will let's talk
about some college basketball. Number one Perdue hosting number ten

(01:53):
Iowa State, a dream matchup today for fans from Machi Arena,
but it was all cyclones eighty one to fifty eight.
Matt Painter after the.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Game, I just thought they stole our spirit. You know
when we would get open ones and we would miss
it and then get frustrated. Whatever do we just our
frustration level got there. You got to get by it
with state credit. Our reason for having a high frustration
level was them. They were damn good.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
They took us to the woodshed, took us to the
woodshed Matt Painter, the Purdue headman, eighty one to fifty
eight the final there. Number one Produce suffers its first
loss of the season. Not much better for the Indiana Hoosiers.
Number twenty two Indiana at Gainbridge field House today against
number six Louisville. The rivalry is back. While the Cardinals
started the game on a sixteen point run, they win

(02:38):
eighty seven to seventy eight. At least the final score
was respectable there that one from Gainbridge field House. This afternoon.
We'll talk about some colts throughout the show tomorrow and
trying to squander an eleven year losing streak in Jacksonville,
and boy they needed Indianapolis eight and four, tied with
the Jaguars atop the AFC South right now on life

(02:58):
support if they can't win all of these games down
the stretch, a big one tomorrow one o'clock. We will
talk about it throughout this evening. Talking about some high
school basketball. Let's take a look at what has gone
on in the state this Saturday night, and boys basketball.
West Lafayette beats McCutcheon in the Lafayette Tournament sixty to
twenty nine. Is that final lccover Benton Central by five,

(03:21):
and then Twin Lakes beats Rensselaer Central by twenty that
at the Lafayette Tournament. The Banks of Wabash Tournament sees
North Vermilion over its rivals South sixty nine to thirty eight.
That final, Park Heritage over Riverton Park seventy seven to
thirty is that final. Western beats Frankfurt seventy two to
thirty six. Today in boys basketball, Northridge over Valpo fifty

(03:44):
seven to forty four. Frankton beats Tipton forty eight thirty
six to final score in that one, Speedway over North
Montgomery sixty to forty two is the final. There Cathedral
over South Bend Saint Joseph. A big time match up
here sees the Fighting Eye Irish head by seven. They
win at seventy eight to seventy one. As far as

(04:04):
girls basketball goes action across the state here as well,
Lebanon over Cascade forty eight to forty three the final.
In that one, Columbus Christian over seven Oaks by ten.
Hamilton Heights beats Connorsville by three points. That's the same
margin for Crawford County's win over Clarksville today and then
Penn beats Crown Point by three as well. Some tight

(04:26):
games here across the state of Indiana. New Palover Delta
also by three, Delfi over West Lafayette also by three.
How about girls basketball today, certainly with some intriguing games.
Nathaniel Finch with your Network Indiana score board updates.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Welcome back everyone on Bob Lovel. This is Network Indiana's
Indiana Sports Talk College basketball Today. Iowa State beats Purdue
eighty one fifty eight with me the voice of the
boiler Makers, Rob Blackman. Rob, this was a disappointing day.
I mean, it's a good, real good Iowa State team,
but Boilers the quote you heard Matt there in the

(05:06):
scoolboard update and took their spirit away, and that's got
to be really disappointing.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
Yeah. I certainly did that in the second half, Bob,
no doubt about it. And look, when you start the
second half seven of eight from three, that normally helps
the visiting team. Yeesually when it was shooting as poorly
as Purdue, did you know prdue is twenty two percent
from three, forty eight percent from the free throw line.
Just a miserable shooting day at home. And what's really

(05:35):
disappointing is Perdue was the fifth best three point shooting
team in the country coming in, and Purdue had a
free throw percentage as a team of seventy seven percent.
So there had been no indicators up to this point
that Perdue was going to be a bad shooting team,
and this day they were. Hopefully this is just an outlier,
because it's one thing when you're missing shots, but when

(05:57):
the other time is making them, you're in big trouble.
And that's what happened today. You know, Purdue did out
rebound Iowa State by just one, uh, but Purdue also
had ten second half turnovers, which that Iowa State to
get out and transition and get some easy buckets and
just you know, this game was thirty five to thirty
one and a half. You felt like it Produe could
just shoot a little bit better than the second half,

(06:19):
it would be in good shape. But uh, the exact
opposite happened. Produce shot even worse than the second half
and they did the first. So, uh, combine all of
those things and you have what it ends up being
a bad day for the home team, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Yeah, and you know, it's one of those things when
you're not shooting the ball. Well, yeah, you talk about
picking up your defensive intensity and trying to create some things.
You can't do enough of it to take care of
the numbers, you know what I mean, You just have
to be flawless devisually, which you're not going to be
against the team of the caliber of Iowa State.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
Exactly what Matt Painter told us on our post scream
radio program. You know, he said, look, we were really
struggling offensively, so you try to find some energy from
the defensive end. Well, if you're not getting stops, you
really can't get any energy from there. And look, a
Ioway State is really good. I mean, look, they're the
reason they're number ten and undefeated in the country is

(07:13):
they are. They are talented across the board. So look,
there's no shame in losing to a team of that caliber.

Speaker 6 (07:19):
You just maybe eight.

Speaker 5 (07:20):
The fact that it was a home game and and
you really just forget the point spread, just the fact
that you just didn't didn't shoot the ball very well
was disappointing. But as Matt Painter, you know, we didn't
know it at the time, but it was a little
foreshadowing from coach Painter and the press conference on Friday,
he said, the reason you schedule this game is because

(07:40):
if you lose, it doesn't hurt you. And when it
comes to NCAA seating purposes. Now, we didn't know at
the time he'd be foreshadowing a loss, but that's what happened.
And it's not a conference loss, right, it's not. It's
a loss to the top ten team. So at the
end of the day, if you can learn some lessons
from this, you're probably better off in the long run.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
These games are important for you. That's why you schedule
them because you clearly if you're matt when you get
in on the practice floor the next time out, you
clearly have everyone's attention, so you know he can stand
there and go listen, I've been telling you some of
these things. I've been telling you. You need to get
more reps, you need to be steady, you need to
work on your technique, on and on and on and on.

(08:24):
Now you have everyone's attention, you know, guys, Hey, look
I did it for I did it long enough to
know people tune you out. I know that's hard to believe,
but people do tune you out. They don't tune you
out after you get your butt kicked.

Speaker 5 (08:37):
And that boy again, that's what you must listen to
a postgame radio interview, because he said, you know, after
the loss like this, all of a sudden, guys seem
to start to listen just a little bit better than
they were listening before. Yeah. Look, when you rip off
eight wins in a row and you're number one in
the country, there probably can be a little bit of that,
a little bit of apathy when it comes to listen

(08:59):
to the coaches. But as you said, when you get
your butt whooped at home like that, all of a sudden,
normally the good players they start paying attention a little
bit more closely.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
Yeah. But the concern you have going forward though, is,
and we talked about it last year, we need points
from others. We need we we know what we're getting
from you know, we know what we're getting from the
Big three. We understand all that. Who else can step
up for us on a consistent basis And that's been
an issue for a year and and to now.

Speaker 5 (09:31):
And the problem today was really outside of Braden Smith.
You know, the Big three was really the big one.
You know, Trake Coffman Wren. Yeah, did not score in
double digits today, and I haven't. I haven't looked it up.
I've been too depressed to look it up tonight. But
I couldn't even say the last the last time Dray
Coffin Rent did not scoring double figures. I'm fairly certain

(09:52):
he was in double figures every single game last year.
Uh and every game so far they shot till today.
So uh that that again, you just hope that's an
outlier because that certainly hasn't been something he has shown,
sure on a consistent basis. And then Fletcher Lawyer also
really labored today. I think one of seven, I think
from three, this is one of the best three point

(10:14):
shooters in the history of the school. So yeah, they're
just there. Weren't enough people contributing today offensively for Purdue,
that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
Pretty on the losing side today to Iowa State eighty
one fifty eight. Rob Blackman, always great to talk to you.

Speaker 5 (10:29):
Enjoy the weekend, all right, Bob, Thank you, have a
great weekend.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Daniel Finch with your Network Indiana scoreboard update. We are
into the second half from Lucas Oil Stadium. How about
this fourth and twenty eight Ohio State forced to punt
on its opening drive of half number two. Great job
by the IU defense. Now we will see Fernando Mendoza
in company, who only had eighty seven passing yards in

(10:55):
the first half. We'll see him come out here and
a chance to take the lead against the number one
ranked team in the nation. Will keep you updated there.
IU will have the length of the field to go,
starting on its own twelve. Also today in college basketball,
it was eighty one to fifty eighth the final. Number
ten Iowa State from Mackie Arena knock down the number
one ranked team in the country. Pretty will most certainly

(11:18):
lose that title when the new poll comes out next week.
It was a rough day for the Boilers, who only
trailed by four at halftime and then just couldn't make
a shot in the second half. Similar deal for the
Indiana Hoosiers, except they were down big early. Eighty seven
seventy eighth the final at Gainbridge Field House today against
number six Louisville. The Cardinals jumped out to a sixteen

(11:39):
to nothing run, and Indiana made it close late but
couldn't quite get over that hump. Also in college basketball,
Butler falls. This from Hinkle Field House, just the second
loss this year for the Bulldogs, first at home seventy
seven to sixty eight Boise State with the win there,
IU Indianapolis falls seventy eight to fifty five the final
against Youngstown's eight. Evansville loses on heartbreaker. Buy a Penny.

(12:05):
At Western Kentucky the final, They're eighty to seventy nine,
Pretty Fort Wayne a bright spot seventy nine seventy seven,
and Horizon League playover Northern Kentucky. Mount Barrezo beats Calumet
ninety eight to fifty eight.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
Nathaniel Finch Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Lovell. This is
Indiana Sports Talk High school basketball. Tonight. Frankton beats Tipton
forty eight thirty six with me Frankton's head coach, Brent Brobston. Brent,
thank you so much for the call. Congratulations on impressive
win tonight.

Speaker 6 (12:35):
Hey Bob, good to talk to you. Thank you. I
appreciate great to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
So the Hall of Famer coach, you were very nice
to the Hall of Fame coach Cliff Hawkins.

Speaker 6 (12:45):
Tonight coach well Cliff Cliff retired. So it's the first year.
Hell now, Bob Cliff good yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Clip, how far behind I am coach?

Speaker 6 (12:53):
Yeah, that's all right, No, congratulations, well, thank you, thank you.
Was a good win for Frankton, good win for US.
Tipton's always got a great program. So yeah, it was
our opening game at home and it was a big
win for US early in the season.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
One of those great performances. Defensively, I can see this
is a game where people you're having to grind it
out on both ends of the floor and kind of
has a feel of December and even even into maybe March.
We kind of feel like a sectional type matchup with
two teams.

Speaker 6 (13:31):
Yeah, Tipton was very patient with the basketball. We led
twenty three to seven at the half, so it was
kind of a I thought we had Defensively, we were
really good in the first half, I felt like and
able to hold them to seven points was a good
first half for us, and the second half I think
it kind of continued. We had a twelve to sixteen

(13:52):
point lead throughout most of it, but as we got
into the fourth quarter it stayed double figures. I don't
think we did a great job finished in the game.
To be honest, I think we could have took care
of the ball better and did some things better on
the offensive end at the end, but overall we'd beat
a good team and a well coached team tonight.

Speaker 1 (14:09):
Who's up? Who plays well for you tonight? Though, coach,
give me let's rage about some of these guys.

Speaker 6 (14:15):
We've got a six to seven junior center Trey Bennett,
who has played really well for US last year as
an All Conference player last year, and he had eighteen
points nine rebounds force tonight to lead us. We've got
a six to eight freshman Ashton Brobston who had thirteen
points force tonight and handled the ball well force plays
guard for US. Ethan Stansbury Noah Melvin are solid seniors

(14:39):
for US that have just been good for three year
starters and Blake Nickham and Eli Birch off the bench
both we're big contributors for US as well tonight. So
it was just a great all around team effort.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
Who's up next for you? Coach? Who do you play next?

Speaker 6 (14:55):
We've got Monroe Central, which will be a tough test.
They went to the semi last year and had a
really good year. They got three starters back and coach
Clin's there and done a nice job with them. So
we're hosting them on Tuesday night and that'll be another
big matchup for US.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Fret brobson the basketball coach at Frankton. They grind one
out tonight over Tipton forty eight thirty six to the final. Coach,
thanks so much for the call. Congratulations again and continued
success to you and your guys.

Speaker 6 (15:24):
Thanks Bob, thanks for everything you do. It's good to
talk to you.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
You're very kind. Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.

Speaker 6 (15:28):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
Coach. Howser big win tonight, sixty to forty three over
Trinity Lutheran. Howser's head coach, Trent moorehead joins me. Coach,
congratulations on the win. Thanks for the call. Appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (15:41):
Coach, great talking to you again. Home opener tonight, we
finally got a home game after three on the road.

Speaker 1 (15:46):
So the hangar, the hangar was loaded up with people,
was it not?

Speaker 6 (15:51):
You know it?

Speaker 7 (15:51):
The hangar was packed. We had the pet band Rocket.
You had great crowd as always and hope tonight and
came up with a nice win over a sectional sixty
opponent and Trinity Lutheran. Real quality team. Was really proud
of the guys tonight.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
You know, of course, my love affair with Howser High School.
They hired my daughter, gave her her first job out
of college for that. I'm eternally grateful and she loves
everything about it, continues to talk about it, and I'll
be glad to pass this on. So defensively, I think

(16:29):
you were probably happy with how you guys played.

Speaker 7 (16:31):
Tonight, definitely, and that's been a staple of our group.
We're very veteran this year. We're fortunate to have a
senior class led by three guys who have been playing
varsity basketball since their freshman year. That's Striker Gil, Gavin Keller,
and Cameron Blair. And defense has been first for those
guys for three years going on four now. Did a

(16:51):
really good job. Trinity came out hot. They've got some hot,
high volume, high percentage three point shooters. They hit four
of their first six threes on us, but did a
much better job locking down to shooters throughout the second
quarter and into the second half, and those guys led
the charge for us, did a great job defensively, did
a great job rebounding as well. And then Striker gill

(17:12):
Oor point guard, had a great night tonight with twenty
one points. He pulled down seven rebounds and then dished
out five assists, so philed the statuet. Cameron Blair had
a great night tonight along with a great game at
Morristown last night in a conference when he put up
sixteen tonight. And then Gavin Keller one of our seniors
who's gonna get a lot of notoriety this year. He's

(17:34):
gonna make a college coach really happy next year with
the way he plays. He went for twelve tonight, but
did a great job defensively. He followed up a twenty
two point performance against Morristown last night, so he's off
to a hot start for US this year.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
But r J.

Speaker 7 (17:48):
Foster another senior who's contributing, and Waylon Harper another veteran
player who's played two years of RC basketball for US.
Both those guys did well. And then Joel Bechdel is
a six foot sixth junior who comes in is getting
better every game he plays. So quality performance from the
guys tonight. I'm really proud of him and good to get.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
A home win. As you know, what's next week look like.

Speaker 7 (18:10):
We host South Ripley on Friday, Coach, we got to
school coming to town for us. That's always a fun
game right away. That's and Coach Beach always has the
Raiders playing well, yeah to go, so that'll be a
fun one. We'll try to the hanger for that one
on Friday.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
All right, Now, your brothers is like you guys are
the first family of coaches in our state. I mean you,
and I mean seriously, I mean, I think it's fantastic.
I think it said that well, it's a tribute to
one of the great greatest guys. I know that your father.
Uh and and it's it's fun from a distance for
a guy like me, it's fun to watch all of

(18:46):
this unfold. I know he's your mom are enormously proud
of all of you. And you you've all gone out
and won a lot of games.

Speaker 7 (18:54):
Oh yeah, and and and on that note, Coach, I
got to shout out coach Brad moorehead and older brother
in the South Dearborn Nights. They're four and oh now,
so they're off to a hot start. They got a
good win over Jennings County tonight. But right, I appreciate
you saying that it's important to us as a family,
and we're thrilled to the heritage we've gotten. We're just
trying to, you know, keep adding on to the legacy
of coach Moorehead and try to do it the right way.

(19:16):
So it's been really fun and the post game calls
are a little different Nowach, with that. Usually you know,
it's been Dad and night. Now Brad's calling. We're right
just on the phone all the time after games now.
But it's really fun, as you know.

Speaker 1 (19:28):
Absolutely Brad had to get that call into Bragg talk
about his w tonight. I like that. That's good stuff,
all right. Tonight, Houser, the Jets are sixty to forty
three winners over Trinity Lutheran. Trent Moorehead, thanks so much
for the call. Give my best to the family. Good

(19:49):
luck next week.

Speaker 7 (19:51):
Thank you, coach. We'll do great talking to.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
You, Thanks very much. Brian Laman joins me from Crotherszill
Crothers Ziel beating Peak and Easter three sixty eight. Coach,
thanks to the call and congratulations on a solid win tonight.

Speaker 8 (20:06):
Hey, thank you, sir. We're happy to pick up our
second conference win here on the season.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Uh, no need to call me sir, I'm just an old,
washed up basketball coach trying to masquerade as a radio
personality coach. So I'm good. It's a good win, though. Listen,
conference wins are hard to come by. I tell people this.
I know people get sick of listening to me say
that it's hard to win. Winning is a hard thing
to do. No matter what game, what level, where you are,

(20:35):
it's hard to win.

Speaker 8 (20:38):
Yeah, games are games are hard to win. Varsity games
X are hard to win, and they're even sweeter. We
can go on the road and you can pick up
conference wins. And you know, Peaking Eastern joined our conference
for the first time here in Clarksville, so it's a
new revamp conference, so a little bit different look to it.

Speaker 1 (20:55):
Well, you weren't very hospitable to the brand new member tonight, now, coach,
that's just.

Speaker 5 (21:01):
We.

Speaker 8 (21:02):
Hey, we were just happy to sneak in here and
sneak out of here. They got a good Sean Smith there.
He's done a lot of good things. They're big and
strong and physical, so we were just glad to slip
in and slip out of here unnoticeable a little bit.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
How'd you counteract the physicality that they play with us bee.

Speaker 8 (21:21):
You know, we get up and down. We shoot about
forty to fifty three of the game, so we did
a really good job of beating the game up and
getting a lot of shots up and then just really
trying to get the ball out and run up and
down the floor. We shot twenty nine free throws tonight
on the road, so that kind of helped us. Yeah,
it was very fortunate for us, and we made twenty
two of those, so we did a really good job

(21:41):
of capitalizing on their mistakes this evening.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Brouthersville beats Peaking Eastern seventy three sixty eight. Briant Layman, coach,
thanks so much of the call. Congratulations call me again
when you have another solid win. I appreciate the time.

Speaker 8 (21:57):
Hey, absolutely, thanks.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
Welcome, Thank you. Coming up scoreboard update with the man himself,
Nathaniel Finch giving us an update on the IU Ohio
State matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
Touchdown Indiana, Nathan, you'll Finch with you your scoreboard update
and IU takes the lead the second ranked Hoosiers right
now over the number one ranked Ohio State Buck Guys
Big Ten Championship Lucas Oil Stadium and it was courtesy
a seventeen yard touchdown pass from IU quarterback Fernando Mendoza,
the current Heisman favorite, and his wide receiver Elijah surrat

(22:35):
So thirteen to ten. IU the Ohio State driving just
crossed the midfield line. We'll keep an eye on that one.
Midway through the third quarter Big Ten Championship. With College
Football Playoff ramifications on the line, the top team probably
gets the top seed in the CFP. The rankings will
come out tomorrow. More importantly, all eyes on what happens
with Notre Dame currently hovering right around that cut line.

(22:58):
Of course, Number three Georgia today blowing out Alabama twenty
eight to seven. So this leaves after BYU's loss today
as well, they got blown out by Texas Tech thirty
four to seven, and then Duke currently leads Virginia by
four second half. This means that there are two spots
for probably three teams, Alabama Notre Dame in Miami. Well,

(23:19):
Alabama's been great all year right now their ranked number nine.
We'll see what the committee does after the blowout loss
today in the SEC Championship. Notre Dame then is likely
going to be between them and Miami. Well, Miami already
beat Notre Dame week one, but I think most say
the Irish have been a better team of late, they're
ranked higher. It will certainly be intriguing to see how
the committee goes on that way tomorrow. Plenty of Irish

(23:41):
fans holding their breath overnight. We'll find out tomorrow at noon.
College basketball today, Iowa State with the win at mac
Arena over Purdue eighty one fifty eight, Number ten, Iowa
State over number one Perdue, and then Indiana basketball loses
against Louisville.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
Welcome back everyone on Bob Lovel. This is Indiana Sports Talk,
brought to you by Indiana Donor Network, talking about Notre
Dame and the playoffs. Our Notre Dame expert doctor Lynn
Clark Jones schmiers one oh one. Let's go back last night.
Dramatic win basketball win from Micah Shrewsbury and the Irish.
Big win for them last night.

Speaker 6 (24:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (24:24):
Notre Dame now seven and three. A couple of big
wins this past week. They knock off an unbeaten Missouri
squad in the acc SEC Challenge and then they go
on the road to defeat a very good Texas Christian squad.
So that's a very good sign. But the downside, Bob
Marcus Burton, the leading scorer of Notre Dame, hurt in
the first half. His status is unknown going into Wednesday's

(24:46):
game when they host iaho Man.

Speaker 1 (24:50):
I could have gone all night without dead call Lynn,
thank you. You know.

Speaker 9 (24:54):
Well, unfortunately this is the second straight year that Burton
has suffered an injury. Last year that really Notre Dame
was playing good and then he gets injured at the
Las Vegas tournament and Notre Dame just had to find themselves.
But the good thing though last night, if you want
to take a silver lining out of this dark cloud,
is Notre Dame found a way to win. They were gritty,
they did it without Marcus Burton. A really big part

(25:14):
of that was freshman Jalen Harrelson out of Anderson and
La Lamire, who is kind of like a Lebron's James
ask type player. He's averaging in double figures and he's
picking up the slack. If Marcus Burton goes down, all.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
Right, football, everybody in the world talking about the playoffs,
and a lot of people in that discussion talking about
Notre Dame. It's a mess. I think there's a consensus
out there of a lot of people that already they
have to reconsider how they do business in the college

(25:49):
football playoff operation. And no one's happy and all the
things that are happening, and then when they're finally announcing
who's gonna play, they're gonna be some really disappointed people. Well, frankly,
we hope it's not Notre Dame. Look, this has got
to be a difficult time for everybody.

Speaker 9 (26:06):
It is what it is, this is what they came
up with. But I've been doing the football calculus all day,
especially the variables of change technique, and I can say
this on equivocally that I have no idea what the
College Football Committee is going to do tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
That's why you're smarter than the rest of us.

Speaker 9 (26:29):
Well, you had a great description of what could happen
within family finish on the on the scoreboard update to
Notre Dame. A lot of things went right today with
Texas Tech coming up with a win over BYU and
Scharge are blowing out Alabama, So now it makes it
even tougher. But I can say this, Bob, Notre Dame
is probably playing the best college football we've seen in

(26:50):
a long time statistically and what they've done, you really
can't deny them this opportunity. The biggest losers if Notre
Dame doesn't get in, it's the fans. We know that
if they go to the Pop Tarts Bowl that Jeremiah
Love is not going to play. You'll see players hitting
the portal. It's not going to be the same Notre
Dame team if they do play in that game, or

(27:10):
even if they accept they Bowl bid, and I think
that is really going to change the direction of Notre
Dame football going forward. Will they be forced into a conference?
This statement by the committee tomorrow if they hold them out,
may have some ramifications in that area. If not Notre
Dame they get in, they deserve.

Speaker 6 (27:29):
To be in.

Speaker 1 (27:30):
Yeah, I think you bring up a great point, and
they have the from the inception. They've doggedly clung to
the fact that their independence and you know, I think
it's it could be patacleusmic for them, quite frankly, depending
on how it goes.

Speaker 9 (27:51):
And everybody who's waiting with baited breath, the Notre Dame
fans are praying and hopefully it's a local call. But
tomorrow on the selection committy is anounced. As you said,
there are going to be a lot of people who
are going to be happy, a lot of people who
are going to be upset. It is what we it is,
but it just means that it's it's a playoff that
needs to be tweaked going forward.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
Yeah, doctor Lynn Clark. In addition to all of his
great work with Irish one oh one, he's written another book, Vision,
Values and Victories, Notre Dame style leadership. By this, you know,
if you're in charge, if you're a manager, or you're
a coach, or anybody, this is there's some real lifestyle
leadership ideas here forging champions and faith, character and commitment.

(28:36):
I highly recommend it. I'm glad you sent me a copy.
I would have bought it anyway, but thank you so much,
doctor Lynn Clark. Wherever books are sold, make sure you
buy it. Enjoy the weekend, try and get some sleep
and think positively. Okay, we'll talk to him Bob, All right,
thanks Lynn, Thank you very much. High school basketball tonight,

(28:58):
we've got we got to talk. We got championships in
the Championship Park. Heritage then wins the Banks of the
Walbash tournament. They beat Riverton Park seventy seven thirty with
me a very happy rich Selsky coach. That's an impressive
championship win tonight.

Speaker 10 (29:15):
Yeah, it was. It was a good performance. Obviously, we
were heavy favorites coming into this our bike County tournament
kind of thing, and kudos to our guys. Our biggest
challenge sometimes in this deal is mentally instead of physically,
and they approached the week really well and obviously really

(29:35):
took care of business tonight quickly and got the job done.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
It's one of those things too, where we talk about this.
You have an experienced group, you have an experienced and
talented group, and I think, do you understand do you
understand they're good? Do you understand that? But they also
have a high expectation and that classic target on their backs,

(30:02):
which they seem to handle quite well. Oh for sure.

Speaker 10 (30:06):
You know, that's probably one of the greatest trades of
this group is that you know, they understand the position
they're in, especially here locally. You know, when we you know,
luckily for us, we're able to schedule, uh, schedule out
a little bit and uh, you know, get away from
this part of the state a little bit and play

(30:27):
some other teams. But around here, you know, we're the
we're the mark for everybody. And sure our guys, our
guys know that, and they do a good job of
understanding that. And like I said, you know, like in
this deal in the banks of the Walbash, you know
we are you know, right now, we're in a really high,
obviously successful talent run of basketball players and and so

(30:52):
sometimes the mental is greater than the physical for us,
and in terms of challenge, and you know, we talked
about it all week, and we talked about, you know,
playing to our standard and not necessarily maybe to who
we were playing and proud of our guys for doing that.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
All tell me who plays well. We want to hear
the rundown, how your son did, how your kids played tonight?

Speaker 10 (31:15):
Actually, you know, Trade Trey didn't do much tonight, and
that's you know, kind of typical of Trey, not in
a negative way. You know, we're balanced, and we've got
a lot of guys that can score, got a lot
of weapons, and we had four guys and double figures tonight.
Let's senior Isaac Pickle with fourteen. Sophomore Joel Miller had

(31:40):
thirteen junior late McMullen had thirteen off the bench and
junior Carter Krum had twelve. Our scoring was really balanced,
and when we're really good, that's when we That's how
we are. And you know, obviously Trey steps up in
the big games and knows that he has to do
some things differently in big games. But you know that's

(32:01):
a that's a tribute to him to being a great
teammate and being really unselfish. So really good performance from
all of our guys tonight.

Speaker 1 (32:09):
Well, I knew, do you play next week?

Speaker 10 (32:11):
We have a good one next week. We're in the
tip Off Classic next Saturday, a rematch of our regional
game last year with Centerville who's also off to four
and oh Start had a really good win tonight against Delta.
It's gonna be It's a really good matchup of two
really good two A basketball teams. They're tough, they've got
everybody back from last year. They're really physical. Like the

(32:34):
way they play. You know, we knew going in last
year to the regional that that was not going to
be an easy game.

Speaker 8 (32:40):
It was not.

Speaker 10 (32:41):
It was an absolute dog right for thirty two minutes,
and I expect nothing less this coming Saturday at Southport
It's gonna be a great opportunity for both schools, you know,
a couple of small schools to get a play in
that and kind of showcase you know, our teams and
really looking forward to that.

Speaker 1 (33:01):
Rich Schelsky, the head basketball coach at Park Heritage. They
win the Banks of the Wabash Tournament tonight beating Riverton
Park seventy seven point thirty. Coach, thanks so much for
the call. Good luck next week.

Speaker 10 (33:16):
Thanks Bob, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (33:18):
Thank you coming up school board update. You're all in
better situations than I am. I'm not. I don't have
access to a TV, so I'm I hang on our
school board updates. That's what's getting me through the night.
To give us an update on the IU Ohio state matchup.

(33:39):
And we'll come back and talk to Greg Rigstraw talk
some college and some high school basketball with him. This
is Indiana Sports talk.

Speaker 7 (33:48):
Man.

Speaker 9 (33:48):
Mendoza takes the stat wants to throw at fires at
dawn the field.

Speaker 10 (33:51):
It's free. Elijah Sorotti makes the touch. Dam You're like
the Surrete seventeen yard pet today.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
And that gave the Indiana Hoosiers a thirteen to ten
lead over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game.
We enter the fourth quarter, I you now with the
ball up by three because they stopped Julian saying on
a fourth and one QB sneak inside the five yard line.
I you now at the length of the field to go.
We'll keep an eye on that as we go. Thirteen

(34:23):
to ten. Number two Indiana over number one Ohio State
in the Big Ten title game from Lucas Oil Stadium
earlier today in the state of Indiana, Hoopidge from Macki Arena,
from Gainbridge Field House, and from Hinkle Field House. Let's
start with the number one ranked Prettue Boilermakers, number one
ranked no more after this weekend. The first loss of

(34:43):
the season for Matt Painters squad, and it was not pretty.
Eighty one fifty eight the final Number ten Iowa State,
one of the best offenses in the state, just scored
one hundred and thirty two points on Wednesday. They beat
the Boilers eighty one to fifty eight at Mackie Arena.
Coach Level you said earlier, not often the Boilers lose
these non conference games at home. Also in college basketball,

(35:08):
Louisville comes to Gainbridge Field House, a little renewed rivalry
between the Cardinals and the Indiana Hoosiers, and it is
an eighty seven seventy eight win. Darren DeVries says, well,
it's tough to defend this firepower.

Speaker 11 (35:20):
I mean, McCall brown's getting he's getting drafted. He's probably
a top five pick. Ryan Comhell's the leading scorer. He's
a really good player.

Speaker 7 (35:27):
You know.

Speaker 11 (35:27):
McNeely is the third guy that you got to worry
about from a shooting standpoint, like they.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Just Greg Ragstraw joins us. Everybody, welcome back to Indiana
Sports Talk. Can't wait to get to Greg Raystraw, Nathaniel Finch.
Excuse me, my studio producer Caleb Zuver started his day
out with Nathaniel Finch doing a couple of shows. I

(35:54):
started my day with Greg Ragstraw at the campus of
IU Indie in a disappointing loss that they suffered to
Youngstown State today and I get to find it, well,
not finish it technically, but close to it by having
Greg Rigstrow with us from the ISC Sports Network and
the voice of the IU Indianapolis Jaguars. Greg Rigstrow, Greg,

(36:19):
thanks for the call. It's been a long time I
hadn't been that long since I saw you take me
to recap for everyone what you and I called earlier
in the day for ESPN plus Jaggs could not just
could not make a basket. It was one of those
really painful situations where they had good looks, right people,

(36:42):
right place, just didn't go for him. And a talented
Youngstown State team played pretty well, and.

Speaker 8 (36:48):
Normally I associate my time with the yard of bricks
in the month of May. Unfortunately that was reconvened tonight
with Lundie shot the ball. They were four of twenty
five from three point range. Pending in IU. Indy is
is an average three point shooting team, which is thirty
three percent. But what they make up for that is
in volume. You know, they make over eleven threes a game.

(37:10):
They take about thirty four to threes a game, So
not only do not make as many, they didn't take
as many. And you know, seventy eight to fifty five
sounds like an average lopsided score and it is, but
folks IUNDI has been averaging ninety points a game. They
be giving up ninety six points a game. Youngstown State
had the strength and athleticism to just completely take them

(37:32):
out of what it is that they do. Finley Woodward
is not a guy that scores a lot for IU Indy.
It's kind of a focal point of their offense in
terms of the offense running through him, and Youngstown State
just blew that up in today's games. So Jaguars now
owen two in terms of Horizon Leak play. They have
a chance to get righting against Green Bay on Thursday
before they kind of dip back out of conference play

(37:54):
for a couple of games, you know, losing it home
to Youngstown State. There's not a lot of shame in
that the Penguins have won twenty plus games three years
in a row, winning record into the last six years.

Speaker 5 (38:05):
The fact that.

Speaker 8 (38:05):
Jaguars put up fifty five points today, that was the
part that was frankly far more troubling for Ben Hallidan company.

Speaker 1 (38:12):
Yeah, and it's just you just you can't just say, well,
it's just one of those games, although you know that
that is partially true. Got to you got to keep confident.
It's a struggle, there's no question. New coach, new system,
pretty solid league and good teams and know how to
play and won a lot of games and so you know,

(38:35):
we talk about it all the time. It's not easy
to win anywhere you are, and they're they're just in
a situation now where, uh, their problems are being exacerbated
by their inability to knock down shots.

Speaker 8 (38:47):
This afternoon, well, simply put again this this has been
a better shooting team than they were today. Yeah, and honestly,
this is what because there was one of their better
defensive efforts they kind of wasted, right because on all
almost any other night, if they give up seventy eight points,
we're having a conversation, Bey, how the Jaguars had a
great win. Let's go back seven days to be more,

(39:07):
edd State eighty five eighty and so the defensive effort
was better today after Frank with that been a problem
is just kind of it is what it is. But
the way that this team plays, and we call it
the system because of the rapid fire away in which
they play. If you're not making three point shots, there's

(39:28):
not a plan B. And so when you're not making
those threes, you score fifty five points. And that's again
not a recipe for this group to win.

Speaker 1 (39:38):
All right. Once you finish with that, you had the
long drive to Brownsburg to do a couple of games
over to Sneakers for Santa event, and as you are
wont to do, you get great games. You had Pike
beating Louisville Male sixty six fifty five, and you had Fishers.
This is a great game, Fishers beating Mount Vernon fifty

(40:02):
seven forty eight. Now that I've set the table, I
got to take a short break, as you know, and
come back and turn it over to you. Sound good,
sounds good. Perfect. We're back on Indiana Sports Talk. Welcome
back everyone. We resume our conversation with Greg Rigstrow at

(40:22):
the Sneaker Sir Santa event at Brownsburg today. He had
the Pike sixty six to fifty five win over Louisville Mail,
and they also called the Fishers fifty seven forty eight
win over Mount Vernon. I'll let you start where you want, Greg.

Speaker 8 (40:37):
So, the first game was Pike and Mail, and again
Mail was the only not Indiana team playing in this event.
And they're one of the better teams in Kentucky. They've
got two tremendously talented sophomores that kind of led them
in scoring. But this is a Pike team that has
absolutely loaded for Bear you know that they were young
a couple of years ago, played a lot of juniors
and or sophomores and juniors. Last year one twelve games.

(41:00):
We're in kind of a loaded section, went through a
lot of injuries. Now they're as deep as any team
in the state. Isaiah Hill is one of the top
recruits in his junior class in the state, if not
the Midwest, because he is six foot eleven.

Speaker 1 (41:13):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (41:14):
Now, he's not a very fick kid. He's gonna he's
gonna be a defensive player. Uh. You know, maybe the
hope is that he's a chet Holmgren type.

Speaker 1 (41:23):
Right.

Speaker 8 (41:23):
You know, we'll see where he is from an offensive standpoint,
But frankly, his offensive game can come along because he's
got so many skilled players around him. Jehari Miller is
their leading scorer coming into the night's game and had
double figures this evening. But then you have the addition
of the Lampley brothers, and obviously we know the Lampley
sisters from Lawrence Central, of which mom is the head coach.

(41:44):
One is down Mississippi State. The younger of the two
daughters is a senior. You're gonna go to LSU. Well,
the boys are pretty good too, that are soft coers
and juniors in terms of the land and Kenneth. Kenneth
made his season debut tonight. He had to sit after
transferring from Laurence when we played a handful of games
last year. But it was the sophomore in Lamb that

(42:05):
had seventeen points that led the way. It's a Pike
team that plays a nine or ten man rotation. They
are really solid now. Probably could have made some more
free throws tonight, and again to Male's credit, they never
went away. Pike kind of led by seemingly five to
ten points almost the entire game, so it was fitting
they won that one by a score of sixty six

(42:27):
to fifty five.

Speaker 1 (42:29):
All right, tell me about I was intrigued with the
second game with the Fisher's Mount Vernon matchup. These are
two pretty good basketball.

Speaker 8 (42:37):
Teams, correct, And obviously Fishers now has won sixty three
of their last sixty five. Whilst they've got three great players,
it is a bit of a different group because they're
young around them, where you've got guys that were kind
of fringe roster players last year on that state runner
up team. Jason Gardner Junior reminds me so much of
Sink Robinson of LN in terms of his ability to

(42:59):
get to the basket. He is so quick off his feet.
In terms of getting rebounds, Cooper Zachary just so solid.
What you do see though, this Fishers group is because
you can kind of help off a couple of guys
more than you could over the last couple of years.
They're not going to put up the same level of offense.
What they are doing, what they have been doing, is

(43:21):
just they've been so so out of this world. Offensively,
we haven't talked about a good art they are. Defensively,
they're still that good.

Speaker 7 (43:28):
You know.

Speaker 8 (43:29):
In back to back games, Bob, they've allowed forty in
Noblesville and forty ed to Mount Vernon. Who are the
top ten teams in the state of Indiana, right, I
think this is a Fisher's team, Bob, as the music
plays us out, that will win as much with their
defense this year as their offense.

Speaker 1 (43:45):
Greg Grigstraw I say he's the best at what he do,
because he's the best at what he does. Thanks Greg
for the time, Have a great weekend.

Speaker 8 (43:55):
Talk to you next week, buddy.

Speaker 1 (43:57):
Do you see you later. Thank you very much.
