Speaker 1 (00:19):
Good evening everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
I'm Bob Lovell and we're glad you're with us. Coming up,
we're gonna talk some pretty football with Rob Blackman. Also,
we're gonna talk Fever basketball later on tonight with Scott
Agnes from the field House Files, and continue to talk
about what's happening with.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
The Colts and some racing.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
We're going to talk about that later on tonight too.
Right now, though, the busiest guy you know, the star
of the show. It's Network Indiana's Land and Kunes.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Coach.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
It is a pleasure to be with you on this
Saturday night with our producers Jayce Hodge and Caden Colford.
We do have a final from down the road at
Gambridge field House on Straighter things night should be Hawkins
Indiana for what I say final score Indiana Fever ninety two,
Chicago Sky seventy. Kelsey Mitchell was a lead scorer for
the Fever with twenty six points, Lexi Hall was seventeen,
(01:28):
Sophy Cunningham sixteen, and Elijah Boston fifteen.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Fever were out.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
A lot of players still know Kitlon Clark with their
groin injury and most recently the Fever lost Sidney Colson
with an acl teir and Aerry McDonald with a broken
right foot, but away to bounce back then going on
the NTT Indy Car Series. Christian Loomguard won the poll,
but he will not be starting on the pole. Here's
Will buckson on Fox Sports.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
It will be pole for Pozzo Oboard, but it's p
one for Christian Lung the penalty in his pocket. He
has minimized the damage in the best way possible.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
Had a big person turn five, a big person turn six,
and I knew it was slower than the past twelve,
so I didn't really think that was it.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
But we were discussing this and this was.
Speaker 6 (02:14):
Kind of best case scenario for us, obviously, you know,
with a sixth praise great penalty. So when I'm just
proud of this team, you know, I mentioned this to
you yesterday. We've had a week off, everybody's kind of recharged,
and obviously another front row lockout for the team, except
only one of them will start there. So I'm happy
that we'd at least could help patter out in that sense.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Like you said, Poto Award, it will now be polsitter elect.
He will start alongside Felix Rosenquist will power third, David
Lucas fourth, Alex Polo looking to get looking to steal
his fourth title tomorrow, made a rare mistake in qualifying
nose into the tire barrier minimal damage though he will roll.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Off in fifth.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Alexander Rossi sixth, Christian Nungar like you mentioned, sixth place
Great Penalty will start seventh, Marcus Arms eighth, Scott Dixon ninth,
and Marcus Erickson rounding out the top ten. Polo can
clinch if he finishes ahead of Poto Award, or if
he finished his second and scores at least one bonus
point for leading a lap, even if Poto Award wins
and gets the maximum points allowed. Final warmup was earlier tonight,
(03:19):
just wrapping up about a couple hours ago. Alex Plow
was the fastest to that alongside him with Colton heard A, Graham,
Ray Hall, Felix Rosa Quiz and Joseph Neugarden Green flag

his seventh career win. While celebrating, Connor, still on the
roof of his car, got his foot caught in the
winternet slipt and fell. Luckily he was okay, but he
(04:45):
did suffer a broken collarbone. But hey, who's a win
cars Zilich gets to win. Sam may Or second, Sammy
Smith third, Austin Hill fourth, Carson Kwoppole, fifth, Justin Algeyer sixth.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Here in just a couple weeks in Daytona.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Welcome back, everybody.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
This is Indiana Sports Talk Front you by Indiana Donor Network.
Season thirty two off to a rousing start because of
tremendous guests like Rob Blackman from the Purdue Sports Network. Rob,
how are you tonight?
Speaker 7 (05:31):
Good Bob, thank you. Get back to work here in
the month of August and start paying into college football again.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
I'd be excited.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
You know, first of all, I think you have a
great job being involved with the Purdue athletic programs, and
there's never a dull moment, quite frankly, and it's it's
a sweet gig and I know you and you're really
really good at it. The other thing too, now is
brand new co coach, lots of changes in terms of players.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Everyone's excited.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
They're looking forward to better days ahead for boiler Maker football.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
So that's a great time of year for everyone.
Speaker 7 (06:14):
Yeah, and it's you know, it's a pretty steve learning
curve for folks like me that that do have to
actually pay attention with their eight faces on this team.
And remember, the roster is only about one hundred and five.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
I was gonna say, hold on a second, say that again.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
I heard you say, sit listen at my age, right,
I have trouble hearing, and I readily admit it. I
mean I can't see and I have trouble hearing. But
you said eighty two new players.
Speaker 7 (06:43):
Yeah, yeah, it sounds crazy, oh.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
My, And the roster is around one hundred.
Speaker 7 (06:49):
Yeah, you're looking at basically eighty percent of the roster
is turned over and blots freshmen and oh my. So there,
you know, there are very few guys left for new
fans that will go to that first game against ball
State at the end of the month. You will definitely
need a program in hand. You know that there there
are a couple of holovers, Devin macavy being one of them, right,
(07:09):
that folks are going to recognize. Certainly his name is
produced top returning running back and quite frankly their best
offensive player returning. But yeah, outside of that, Bob, it's
a lot of a lot of learning of new faces.
And you mentioned it earlier with your opening comment, and
a new coaching staff as well, So a lot of
new guys there that you're trying to learn and get
to know. And and it's I have to say, I've
(07:31):
been to I don't know, four or five practices since
they've started up last week, and there are a number
of folks out there in that practice deal. But I'm
you know, I have to ask people now, who's that again? Now?
Which coach is at? So there's a lot of new
faces out there.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
Yeah, we listen, in our business, in the sports business,
we all get caught up with this word culture. You know,
you know, they've got the reason they win they've got
a great culture.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
They need to stay published a culture. On and on
and on. Listen, I've been through it. I mean I
coached a couple of.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
Teams one that had no culture. I mean, it wasn't
it wasn't a problem for me to change it. They
didn't have one, to be honest, My job was to
us to help them building. This the same thing Barry
Owam's going through. I mean he's developing a culture from
the literally from the ground up for all of his
players and his staff and the support staff and everybody around.
Speaker 7 (08:28):
Yeah, I will say this, and your point certainly is
well taken and well thought out. One thing that is
I think helping a little bit is most of the staff,
not all, but most of the staff are with him
at UNLV. Uh right these last couple of seasons, and
he brought six it might be actually seven players with
him from UNLV. So that is health for that transition,
(08:51):
just a little bit. Guys that know what to expect.
They understand what the system is supports look like, and
more specifically, to your point, what the culture is supposed
to look like. So that has helped that transition certainly
from that standpoint. But you're right, there's it's a major
learning for all involved. Right now.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
I always you know, I had the luxury. Times are different,
but you know, and produce had this luxury. To everybody's
had this luxury. You come in as a freshman, you grow,
you know, you may transfer, you may have rich shirts,
some people all that stuff, but you were around people
who've been there before and learned from others who had
been there before. And now you don't have that. Everybody
(09:32):
starts from ground zero, and the sheer volume of information
they have to understand and do is overwhelming, quite frankly.
Speaker 7 (09:42):
Yeah, and especially in the game of football, where you
know it is just a little bit more complicated with
what you think are structured in modern college football these days,
both defensively and offensively, with the different schemes that people
are trying to run. And it's really so And you
know this from being a part of of rebuilds. And
not only are you trying to instill culture and make
(10:04):
sure under everyone understands what's expected of you as a player,
but you still have to get back to the basic
fundamentals of teaching me fame of football, right uh, you
know that's the part that often gets lost I think
with fans is there's still a lot of teaching here
and a lot of coaching that's going on just to
coach some guys up, just to get them ready for
the first game of every year. I mean, basically five weeks, uh,
(10:26):
to get yourself ready to play that first game, and
then it's you know, it's the meat grinder of twelve
weeks of college football. So uh again, I've had a
lot of fans stop me within the last week. You know, Hey,
what do you think? Hey, what do you think? I
really don't know what to think. I don't think anybodys
they're going to know probably the middle of September.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
You're going to have to come up with it during
the school board update because you and I still have
to talk a little bit about it. Rob, hang on
through this break, will you do that?
Speaker 7 (10:55):
Okay, Yeah, sounds good.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Rob Blackman and I will come back and talk more
pretty football. On Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Stock.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
The Indiana Fever have a final from Gamebridgefield House.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
There's the buzzer.
Speaker 8 (11:10):
The Fever Faithful Rising is WAA sellout crowd of seventeen thousand,
two hundred and seventy four at Gamebridge Fieldhouse, and this
Fever team maybe broken hearted, butt resilient, riddled by injuries,
The Fever rebound and pulled together to feat the Sky
by a final score of ninety two to seventy.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
You heard it there from John Nolan and the Fever
Radio Network, ninety two to seventy final Kelsey Mitchell Wesley
scored for the Fever with twenty six points, Lexi Hall seventeen,
So Becunningham with sixteen, and a Leah Boston with fifteen.
In the MLBAT, the Los Angeles Angels took down the
Detroit Tigers seven to four, Sin Sandy Reads two to one,
(11:54):
were the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Guardians three to one over
the Chicago White Sox, and then we had the Chicago
Cubs lead the Saint Louis Cardinals nine to one, Bob
a ninth with two outs of that game is nearly done.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
In the MiLB, the Omaha.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Storm Chasers took down to the Indeapolis Indians ten to four,
right down the road at Victory Field. I'm assuming we'll
hear from Howard Calvin later tonight, and then our own
Brendan King. He'll be happy South Bend Coast took down
the Fort Wayne tim Caps four to one. India eleven
lost to the Detroit City FC one nothing. We'll get
(12:31):
more to colts camp later on. Anthony Erson not a
great day as he went one for six full eleven
on eleven. Dale Jones, however going five of six full
eleven on eleven. Colts practice tomorrow continues from four to
five thirty for never can you ask sports? Almena Coons.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Welcome back everyone. I'm Bob Lovell.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
This is Indiana Sports Talk, brought to you by Indiana
Donor Network, where we resume our conversation with Rob Blackman
from the Purdue Sports Network. Brand new coach Barry Otam.
Welcoming literally a brand new roster. Rob, You've had a
chance to be out there. You said, you know, everybody's
a new face. You have to start to learn people's
(13:15):
names and what they do with players and staff to
that point. To that end, who has impressed you out
on the field to this point, Yeah.
Speaker 7 (13:24):
Good question. I would start with the wide receiver position.
I think it's a little bit more talented and skilled
than we probably would have thought. Going in a couple
of transfers have really helped out there a guy by
the name of Michael Jackson. IID how about that for
a name, Michael?
Speaker 2 (13:42):
I like it.
Speaker 7 (13:44):
He is the irony. He's originally from Las Vegas, but
he did not play at UNLV for coach otom He's
actually a Georgia transfer, but he has really improved. And
then another Georgia transfer, ironically kid named Nitro Tuggle.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
I love it.
Speaker 7 (13:59):
Also transfer. Yeah, we got a Nitro and a Michael Jackson.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
I'm liking it already.
Speaker 7 (14:06):
But they've they have really shown up and shown out
as far as the wide receiver position, and I know
that was a big question mark going into the season
that Purdue could have some real depth there and more importantly,
just some playmakers at that position. So I would start there.
I do think Purdue's offensive line is probably in pretty
good shape, mainly because they do have a couple of
(14:28):
UNLV transfers that came to Purdue with coach Giodano. Vercaro,
who's a fifth year senior, was an All Conference player
for you and LV last year. He'll be one of
those guys that starts up front. So I do also
think that's a position that that again, having not asked
the coaches directly, but Rocket tells me they feel pretty
(14:49):
good about that position. But look, as everyone knows, when
it comes to the game of football, it's all about
quarterback and kind of consistency can you get from that position.
And you know, right now, it's still the wide open
battle at least through the first two weeks of camp
for the most part. For the most part, Ryan Brown
has been taking most of the snaps with the ones
(15:11):
splitting the snaps, they should say, with the ones with
Evans Cuba Cuba. As a kid from Mississippi State, he
was actually here in the spring, so he did go
through springball. Ryan Brown, Purdue fans might remember, actually transferred
at the semester break, transferred to North Carolina, played spring
ball with North Carolina, then transferred back to Purdue. So
(15:34):
while he's not new to Purdue, he is still new
to the coach Otam system. So those are the two guys,
at least for the moment, through the first two weeks,
that have been taking most of the snaps of the
first team offensive quarterback. But again, I would I would
just from what I've seen with my own two eyes,
I would say that's still pretty much a wide open competition,
right now.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Rob Blackman with him with me, we're talking about Purdue
football offensively, like defensively.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
This has been a program historically.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
That has done some good things offensively, but has at
various times been I think victimized on the defensive side.
And so you know, at this particular stage you're still
trying to build all that, but clearly you're optimistic and
should be optimistic about turning something like that around.
Speaker 7 (16:27):
Well, you hope, and you really I mean it, and
I'm not trying to be funny here, but you can't
be much worse.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
I mean, I was trying to be as diplomatic as
I could in the setup.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
I mean, really, I thought it was pretty well done.
Speaker 7 (16:39):
Honestly, I would agree you handled it flight gingerly and
good for good on you. But look, Predue last year
was dead last and the big ten in points loud,
dead lasting yards aloud. Basically every major defensive category statistically
that one would pay attention to. Prdue was dead last
(17:00):
that they ten. So one would think, right, you can't
get any worse than last. So yeah, only get you
can start to improve, and you would hope and then yeah, hey,
new life on that defensive side of football. Not only
with new players, but with new coaches and new strategy
and new scheme. Yeah, if you could look, I Thinkdue
is going to be good enough offensively they can win
(17:20):
a few games, right if the defense and just give
them a chance to hang in there, right, which they
just did not do enough of last year. But yeah,
look plenty again, so many new faces and stuff to
really pick out anyone right now in particularly, But I
do think defensive line wise, I think Predue feels pretty
good about what they have with the rotating guys they'll
have up front there on the d line. Now can
(17:42):
they get some consistency on the back end and at
the linebacker position that's gonna be a big question mark.
Just not a lot of a lot of a lot
of linebacker depth or nor experience. But hey, that's you know,
that's why you play the games. But yes, Purdue, again,
I'm not trying to be cute here, but it can't
(18:02):
be much worse than dead last like Perdue was last
year on defense. So you only have one way to
go and that's up. So hopefully that can start this year.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
As diplomatic as I try to be, I think that
you would be optimistic from the standpoint that you've hired
a guy who has a proven record of winning football games,
and at various times in the evolution of the football
program in.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
West lofeat that hasn't necessarily been the case, right.
Speaker 7 (18:28):
And just look back to last year, pardon me, the
last two years you brought in a head coach and
Ryan Walters who had no head coaching experience, certainly had
been a very good defensive coordinator, but had never been
a head coach. You do not have that situation obviously
with Barry odom right, not only as he's been a
head coach, but he's been a head coach in the
SEC with Missouri, and he's been a head coach at
(18:49):
UNLV and had great success at UNLV the last two years.
So yes, this guy's a season professional. He's been the
boss before. He understands what a head coach is supposed
to do and what it's supposed to want like him.
More importantly, he's he's built a program from basically scratch,
like at UNLV, So this is not a new new.
Speaker 9 (19:08):
Task for him.
Speaker 7 (19:09):
He's been down this road before. Now, Yes, so much
different animal the Big ten and playing if you say UNLV,
but at least they're familiar some familiarity with him, and
again a lot of that staff coming with him from
UNLV that that can only help.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
I'm looking at the schedule and uh, you know, open up, don't.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
Look at November.
Speaker 9 (19:28):
Don't know November.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Because I was getting I was getting ready to say,
have they made enemies in the Big ten office in
terms of scheduling because they you know, the Big didn't
did them no favors at all.
Speaker 7 (19:42):
Yeah, for your listeners, the November schedule is Ohio State
Michigan at Washington. I U, that's your November schedule.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Yeah, that's That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
That somebody's mad at him, so uh that look, we're
a long way from November.
Speaker 7 (19:58):
Who knows, things can change, But man, you look at
that schedule right now and you think you're so, oh
my gosh, how are you gonna win a game in November? Uh?
And I understand right now the staff's only concerned about
winning that first game against ball State.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Sure, yeah, yeah, we got we got that's yeah. No,
no one's buying that, but okay, you got to say it.
I understand.
Speaker 7 (20:19):
That schedule is brutal, and you still have games sprinkled
in there against Illinois, who's obviously going to be at
the top fifteen. You're going to Minnesota, who's always good.
So yeah, it's uh, there's there's nothing easy about that schedule.
But look, welcome to the big ten, right if you
want to play with the big boys, and this is
what you have to do, and and that's the schedule
(20:41):
produce that presented to us.
Speaker 9 (20:42):
So here we go.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
And I think that's you know, that's just how it is,
all right, Rob, I appreciate it. We're gonna do this
quite a bit throughout the year. It's great to talk
to you. I hope you're well and have a great weekend.
And thanks for the call.
Speaker 7 (20:55):
Yep, absolutely, Bob, thank you.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Let's go to some minor league baseball, Indianapolis Indians taking
on the Fort Wayne excuse me, taking on.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Uh whold they played? Howard coming? Who did we play tonight?
Speaker 10 (21:11):
I wish there was a four Wayne ten k Yeah,
I know the Omaha storm Chase.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
Right, I have that in my mind. I just forget.
How'd we do tonight? Not too good?
Speaker 10 (21:24):
Took it on the chin Omaha. Bob won the game
ten to four. It was a lot closer till later.
What happened was the Indians had a two to one
lead in the fifth, Omaha.
Speaker 9 (21:36):
Tied it up.
Speaker 10 (21:37):
Game was tied to the sixth, and Bobby Dullback of
Omaha hit a two run homer make it four to two,
and it remained that way until there were two outs
and nobody on in the eighth inning, and Omaha scored
five runs with two outs and open bikes and that
was the ballgame. Ten to four was the final. And
I'll tell you, Bob, this series has been really rough.
(22:00):
We talked about it last night. Bronch was an Omaha
team that's more than twenty games for low five hundred.
The Indians were playing great coming in. Yet Omaha has
won four of the first five games in this series.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
You know what, Howard, we're squeezed on time. I need
you to Can you hang on talk a little bit more?
Speaker 10 (22:21):
Sure?
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Sure, that'll be great. I'll come back give you my
theory on all that. How's that sound. I know you're
dying to hear it.
Speaker 10 (22:28):
That's what happens.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
We'll come back.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
Talk more baseball with the Hall of Famer Howard Kellman
talking about the Indians and their tough night against Omaha.
We'll talk about that when we come back on Network
Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
LANDI kuons here with another scoreboard update. Let's look some
more MLB scores. The Los Angeles Angels took down the
Detroit Tigers seven to four, Cincinnati Reds two to one,
or the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cleveland Gardians took down the Chicago
White Sox three to one, and we have a final
from Saint Louis Chylo Cubbs nine to one over the Cardinals.
We'll continue our conversation with Howard Kellman here very soon.
(23:06):
As the Indians lost ten to four over the Omaha Stormchasers,
South Bend Cubs four to one over the Fort Wayne Tencaps,
Indy eleven Detroit City FC took down the Indy eleven
won nothing, and then another update on this whole Connor's
Zilwich story. We've been mentioning him out throughout the night.
Won the NASCAR Excrinity Series race today while celebrating, his
(23:27):
foot slipped on the window net and hit his head
as a scary situation. Post is saying his CT scans
of his head were clear, but he did suffer a
brooken collarbone. He was scheduled to compete in tomorrow's NASCAR
Cup Series race, but that team has now decided to
withdraw Connor's number eighty seven Red Bulls Chevrolet so o'
Connor will not compete in tomorrow's Cup race. Aside from Connor,
(23:50):
that's the sixth win of the year in twenty twenty
five for the nineteen year old rookie. Rest of the results,
the top ten Sam may Or second, Sammy Smith third,
Austin Hill fourth, Carson Kuappole fifth, sixth, Justin Augeyer, Austin
Green seventh, Christian Echis eighth, Brandon Jones ninth, and Harrison
Burton tenth. And then for tomorrow in the NASCAR Cup Series,
(24:10):
Ryan Blaney on pole position. Alongside him will be Shane
Van Gisbergen. Rest the top ten for that Chase Briscoe third,
roschaw Stand fourth, Kyle Busch fifth, Michael McDonald sixth, Alex
Bowman seventh, Carson hosts of Our eighth, Christopher Bell ninth,
and William Byron tenth. For Network Indiana Sports, Emana Coons, Welcome.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Back, everyone, and Bob Lovell.
Speaker 1 (24:39):
This is Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk. Before the break,
we were talking with Howard coming the voice of the
Indianapolis Indians. Indians drop a TOEF one to Omaha storm
Chasers tonight at Victory Field. We were talking earlier obviously, Howard.
This stretch, this series with Omaha has not gone well
for the Indians, and it's an Omaha that's been struggling.
(25:01):
My theory is there are certain teams sometimes that you
don't match up well with and you're a better team,
but sometimes you know, you know, pitching rotations to some
of the matchups, those kinds of things. Certain teams just
kind of have your numbers, so to speak.
Speaker 10 (25:18):
Well, in this series they have. The first three games
Bob were decided by first three losses the Indians had
to Omaha in the series, each were decided by one run.
Tonight was a two run game going into the eighth inning.
So they've been close games. You know, you get a
bunt down, you get a hit here or there, one
thing or another. Your point is certainly valid though, but
(25:40):
there was a tremendous momentum swing coming into this series.
The Indians had all the momentum in the world. The
Stormchasers had no momentum whatsoever. One thing that helps Omaha
playing in Indianapolis, and you know, it's something that we've
talked about with their people, and that is Omaha's ballpark
(26:01):
is very hit her friendly, and Victory Field is not
necessarily hit her friendly right there. If anything, it's picture friendly,
and the Omaha pitchers get a huge lift when they
come out here and they play in a picture friendly environment.
So that's something that Omaha's capitalized on and it's helped
their ball club. But just a very, very tough way.
(26:23):
The Indians are five games out of first place with
thirty seven games remaining. They wrap up the series with
Omaha tomorrow Bubba Chandler on the Hill one thirty five
at Victory Field, and then they go on a two
week road trip, six games in Scranton, then six in Syracuse,
and those are the two teams they're chasing.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Running this schedule is rapidly running out of time. Need
to get back on track. And when you get to
the ballpark coming up, make sure you swing by the
gift shop pick up of Howard's intriguing in educational book
sixty one Humors and Inspiring Lessons I Learned from Baseball.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
I've read it more than once. I recommend it highly. Howard,
It's always great to talk to you. Thanks so much
for the call. Best of luck to the Indians.
Speaker 10 (27:15):
Bob, It's always the pleasure was mine. Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Thanks so much. Hall of Famer Howard Kelman. All right,
Landon Coons, catch me up? What have I missed while
I've been trying to do all the work around here
for you guys.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
So, like I mentioned in the last updates, another update
on the Connor Zilich NASCAR driver. So, like I mentioned,
broken collarbone right, he was scheduled to compete tomorrow's NASCAR
Cup Series race. The entry has now been withdrawn, so
Connor will sit tomorrow out, which was kind of kind
(27:48):
of expected.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
You think.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
All right, so he wins the race. Have you seen
the clip? Have you seen it?
Speaker 2 (27:56):
I haven't.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
I've seen the clip. It is like you him going
up and he's kind of wobbling a little bit. And
because I, like I've mentioned earlier, I had it set
up on my TV. I thought he's might fall, he
just very might well fall, and then he actually did it,
and it's just it's I've never in all my years
of watching motorsports, I have never seen anything like that.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
So he wins the race, gets out of his car,
it starts to climb up the fence where the fans
are and falls.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
No no, no, no, not not near the fence. So he
was in victory lane. So he climbs on top of
the roof of his car.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
On top of his car, and as he goes.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
To celebrate, he goes to step back down and his
foot got caught and called the window in the window
and just eats it.
Speaker 4 (28:42):
I mean, I feel so bad for this kid because
he is he is considered one of the top NASCAR prospects,
and rumor is he could get a full time seat
next year in the Cup Series and he's only nineteen. Yikes,
and this is this is not good for Connor's illich.
Speaker 2 (28:58):
No, you know what is it?
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Well, we understand it, but he can always step up
there and say, uh, just to want to remind all
of you, this happened to me in victory circle.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
So let me be an example.
Speaker 2 (29:13):
Hello. So, uh, just to back up a little bit,
the reason it.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
Happened is I was being recognized for winning the race,
and I might have been a little exuberant in my
celebration and broke my collar bone. But I want to
make sure you remember I won the race.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
I said, I did this for the fans. This is
what they came here for.
Speaker 1 (29:35):
All right, coming up tomorrow though, we've got Indy Car
in Portland.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
What's up with that qualifications today? How did that go?
Speaker 4 (29:43):
So for qualifying, Christian Lingard technically was awarded the pole position. Right, Uh,
he'll drop back six spots.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
For a deal. What happened?
Speaker 9 (29:53):
You know?
Speaker 2 (29:53):
They tag him six spots.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
For unapproved engine adjustments. And he's not the only one
and that was caught with this, Joseph Newgarden, Santino Ferrucci
and Kiff and Simpson, And this is a pretty common
thing that Indy Car drivers have. It's probably the most
common pre race penalty that any driver will get. So
loing Guard will now start seventh and his Aaron McClaren
(30:17):
teammate Pot of Award is now pulseitter elect.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
So do they not know what the rules are or
what's the deal?
Speaker 4 (30:23):
You know, I've never really known on that. That's just
something I've just kind of like grew up watching. It's like, okay,
this happens.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
Well.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
Mark James is supposed to be with us later on tonight,
I'll just ask him.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
He would definitely know more than I think.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Yeah, I don't want to put you in this spot here. Listen,
he might know a little bit more than you do.
But then again, you're a pretty smart guy, so you
got that.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
So listen. It was a busy day.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
We get the culture and action again at this Now
they're still practicing in Westfield, right, there's still a Grand
Park tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Yes, that is correct. They have three practices remaining. They'll
be there tomorrow and Monday. Both sessions go from four
to five thirty, and then Thursday they have that joint
practice session with the Green Bay Packers that goes from
three to five. That's the last one, and then they
go to a week from tonight their week season pre
two game week week season week two game against the
(31:21):
Packers right down the road at Lukeshole Stadium.
Speaker 2 (31:24):
Man, it just happens to be before we know what
they're going to be playing. And I'm sure you know.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
That's a welcome news for all of us. Quite frankly,
it's about time. It just seems like this thing takes forever.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Oh, it definitely is.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
We We've already, We've suffered enough through the dog days
of summer and everyone's been waiting for football to come back,
and now it's it's so nearly here. It's right on
our fingertips, and you know, every diehard football fan is
gonna be sitting there on the edge of their couch
right from one pm until eleven thirty at night. It's
one of the greatest times in all sports.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
All right, I want you to sit back and relax.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
Is that we have a superstar with us who's going
to help us understand what's going on in NASCAR. Speaking
of superstar, Adam Alexander joins me, Adam, one of the
things you do is you're the guy on the Infinity Series.
You had a wild one tonight, did you not?
Speaker 9 (32:22):
My gosh, it was crazy and you know we've had
those conversations, Bob, will you say, I've never seen anything
like that today. It was one of those races that
just it really offered everything and there were so many
turns and you know, at the end of the day,
the news as we exit is all, you know, fairly
(32:42):
positive based on what we witnessed. But it was it
was some kind of day at Watkins Glenn for the
Infinity Series, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Number One in all the years we've done this show,
and I say we because you've been there with me
literally from season number one back in your days that
U of E Basket all we've talked about your love affair.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
How much you enjoy Watkins Glenn as a venue.
Speaker 9 (33:07):
Well, you know, I've just really come to like road
course racing, and I love it because the racing is
typically good, the restarts are crazy, that there's a little
bit of a short track mentality, which is always fun.
But then there's you know, the strategy element that comes
with road racing, and I've always enjoyed that part of
it too, because not that you would ever say that
(33:28):
racing and NASCAR is not a team sport, right, but
you really feel the impact of that on a road course,
just because the crew chief's got to do his job
and map out a plan and the driver's got to
execute it, and you know, obviously the pit stops and
all that stuff, and so I really like the all
encompassing part of that, and you really see it at
a place like Watkins Glynn.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
All right, when we we set all these things up,
just you don't have any idea what's going to happen.
That's what makes it so much fun. Walk me through
the lane celebration at you know what?
Speaker 2 (34:03):
Hold that thought?
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Well, we got to do the scoreboard update, so we'll
come back. We'll talk about Victory Lane. How's that sound?
Speaker 9 (34:11):
That sounds great?
Speaker 1 (34:12):
Perfect, Adam, Alexander and I'll be right back after the
schoolboard update on Indiana Sports Stock.
Speaker 4 (34:19):
Landy koons here for another scoreboard update the NTT IndyCar Series.
The Bitnile dot Com Grand Prix of Portland. Christian Loinguard
did ar pole position, but will eventually start seventh due
to a sixth place grid penalty for unapproved engine adjustments,
giving his Aero mclaaren teammate Potter Award pole position. Elect
alongside pod Award will be Felix Rosenquist making up that
(34:41):
front row. The rest of the top ten starting lineup
will power third, David Lucas, fourth, Alex Plow fifth, could
clinch his fourth championship. Tomorrow he'll roll off fifth, Alexander
Rossi sixth, Christian Loinguard seventh, Marcus Erickson eighth, Scott Dixon ninth,
and Marcus ericson tenth green flag. Tomorrow at three twenty
you can watch John Fox or you can listen to
it on our flagship station on ninety three to five
(35:03):
and one oh seven to five. The Fan NASCAR Cup
Series Go Bowling at the Glenn. Ryan Blaney on pole
position for tomorrow's race. Alongside him will be Shane van Gisbergen,
just recently signed a multi year contract extension with Trackhouse Racing.
Starting third Chase Briscoe, Mitchell Indian his own Ross Chastay,
and fourth, Kyle Busch, fifth, Michael mcdoll sixth, Alex Bowman seventh,
(35:24):
Carson Hosovar, eighth, Christopher Bella ninth and William Byron tenth.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
Green flag is tomorrow two o'clock.
Speaker 4 (35:30):
You can watch on USA and we're gonna talk to
a little bit more with Adam Alexander about this whole
Connor's Ziliz situation. Winsiday at Walkins Glenn for the Mission
two hundred. It's a sixth win of twenty twenty five
for the nineteen year old rookie, second win at Walkins
Glenn won there on his debut last year. It's a
seventh career win. While celebrating, fell out of his car,
(35:50):
suffered at broken collar bone. He was scheduled to run
in the Cup Series race tomorrow, but that team has
now decided to withdraw top five. Connor Zillach, Sam Mayor,
Sammy Smith, Austin Hill, Carson Kloppole for New Indiana sports
On Landa Kuns.
Speaker 1 (36:04):
Welcome back everyone, This is Indiana Sportsock. As Landon was
talking about NASCAR, Adam Alexander rejoins us he had the
call today on the the Connor Zillag win in Exfinity Series.
So how crazy was that Victory Lane celebration?
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Adam?
Speaker 9 (36:26):
Yeah, you know, it's it's unbelievable and what's you know,
it's just crazy about it is there's just been so
much to celebrate this year about Connor Zillig. Yeah, and
he's really just taking the Eccinity Series by storm. And
you know when he came in, everybody's like, he's a
road racer, and so you just anticipate he's going to
(36:47):
be good on the road and it just comes from
his upbringing. And he was so good racing go karts
and you know, sports cars, and and he won his
first career start last year in Vicinity in you know,
in a race at Watkins, so you knew how good
he was here and today he was outstanding again, and
he wins the race and then you know, the race
(37:09):
is over, and you know, typically we stopped the winner
on the front straight away. That's just kind of been customary,
and and today the interview was going to be conducted
in victory lane, so he actually stopped and celebrated on
the front straightaway. And then when he got into victory lane,
he you know, gets out to do the photos and
do the pos on the car and he just stood
(37:30):
on the window and one foot on the window and
one foot on the roof, and as soon as he
made that move, he fell and you know and landed
awkwardly off the car, and it was a very scary scene. Yeah,
and that's one of those big moments on TV, right,
I mean, you want to rime sure that and unfortunately
(37:51):
it was front and center of just something that you
just would never want to see in his horrific fall.
And and you know, when we we were to going
off the air, and so we kind of left the
air this evening uncertain of what his status was. We
knew he was away in talking to people and made
the trip to the care center, but not much beyond that.
But as you guys just reported, the score, scoreboard update,
(38:14):
you know, broken collar bone, and you know he's obviously
going to miss some time. They withdrew him from the
Cup race tomorrow. It was scheduled to be his last
Cup race of the year and then will remain to
be seen. You know what his status is as a
driver that's running full time and for the championship in Infinity.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
Well, you feel badly for him, you know, biggest day
of his life. Wins, wins the race, and you know
it wasn't just not to be unfortunately for him. All right,
So you know it's a great race though, as you
pointed out, this is the exciting race, lots of drama.
I'm sure you're looking at the same thing for tomorrow.
(38:51):
Looking with Ryan Blaney and Shane van Gisbergen on the
top two in this run tomorrow.
Speaker 9 (38:59):
Well, Van giz has now won three consecutive races on
road courses and you got it all started at Mexico
City a couple of months ago. He sweeps back to
back weeks at Chicago on the streets and then in
Sonoma and a great race car today and I'm shocked
that he didn't win the poll just because he's just
been unflappable. I mean, you just don't beat this guy.
(39:20):
And Ryan Blaney goes out late ken he has a
really good lap and then he backs it up with
an even better lap and he put it on the
pole of his Funny Blaney said he talked to his
buddy Bubba Wallace, who won the Brickyard for Hunt a
couple of weeks ago, and Bubba said, boy, you screwed up.
You've made it mad. Now you don't have a chance tomorrow,
referencing Blainey getting Ben Gisbergen for the pole and Blaney
(39:41):
Blainey said, I just told him if I can beat
him once, I'll take it anyway I can get it. So,
you know it'd be fun. Brubel's drivers have wins, and
you got four drivers in the top ten that haven't won,
and with three races to go to the playoffs, you
know this could be an opportunity for someone to jump
in there and still lay off position and jump above
(40:02):
that cut line of the victory. So it should be
very entertaining tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
It certainly will be.
Speaker 1 (40:07):
You have time to hang on through this update, scoreboard update,
talk a little bit more. Yeah, sure, absolutely the best
at what he does. Adam Alexander will stay with us
talking NASCAR at the Infinity Race today. Certainly some drama
there and there will be plenty of drama coming up tomorrow,
(40:29):
so a lot going on with that. I'm Adam Alexander
will stay with us. Short break will come back. This
is Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Welcome back everyone.
Speaker 1 (40:44):
This is Indiana Sports Talk talking racing with Adam Alexander
from Fox. If you don't know he's from Fox, he's
a Fox superstar. Quite frankly, all right, Adam, we got
we're running tomorrow and Watkins Glenn and you mentioned three
races to go before the playoffs. It's uh, these it's
(41:06):
this time of year we start to play the what
if game and who's in and who's out?
Speaker 2 (41:11):
Where are we now with three to go?
Speaker 9 (41:15):
So they got three playoff positions that remain open with
three races left. And when you look at it, Tyler
Reddick is in an outstanding you know position to be able,
you know, to advance in. And then after that, you know,
it gets a little more dicey. I feel pretty good,
you know about the circumstance for Alex Bowman, you know,
but at the playoff cut line, you know, it's just
(41:37):
so difficult because with Bubba Wallace winning a couple of
weeks from show and then you know what that does
to the playoff standings. It just leaves you know a
lot of question marks on where everything is going to
end up and who's going to be able to get in.
And here's what really makes it crazy is it's tied
at the cut line, but the two guys are battling
for that last spot right now, separated by twenty three points.
(41:59):
Your teammates Chris Busher and Ryan Preeze and a driver
that's been as good as anybody lately, do you feel
like maybe could sneak in and win, especially at Richmond
or Daytona in the next couple weeks is Brad Keselowski
The third driver arefk So you know it's dicey there
when you look at those teammates, and really everybody's got
to be with the must win mentality because even when
(42:21):
you look good with points right now, you start adding
winners and then all of a sudden that advantage you
think you have isn't as great and you put yourself
in a tough spot. So it'll be a stressful a
few weeks for drivers not getting a lot of sleep,
and a tremendous amount of anticipation for everybody watching to
see how it plays out.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
As you heard me mention, this is the beginning of
season number thirty two. There's no way we stay on
for thirty two years orout guys like you taking the
time to call us on the weekends, and you.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
Know, I love you.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
Can I thank you enough for the support you've given
me and the show for these thirty two years.
Speaker 9 (43:01):
Well, I would just say congratulations. I marvel at the ability,
you know, for you to do it each and every
week for such a long period of time. And then
I would say too, you know two things. One it
speaks to how great the sports community is in the state. Yeah,
And then I would say just to special salute to
all those high school coaches, and you know, you know
(43:21):
all of them, and I've been fortunate over the years
to get to know some of them, and obviously my
career began covering high school sports in Indiana and I'm
still a fan, and I just marvel at what those
coaches will do to get promotion, get their kids promoted,
so they have opportunities, and they're in it for the
right reasons, and your show has been a great platform
for that. So I congratulate you, and I thank the
(43:44):
audience that's been so loyal and kept this thing going
because it's a major statement about Indiana sports and what
it means to so many.
Speaker 1 (43:52):
That's well said, and I agree with you one hundred percent.
Have a great weekend. Well, we'll catch up with you next.
Speaker 9 (43:58):
Week, Yes, sir, great to be with you, Bob, have
great Thank.
Speaker 1 (44:02):
You, Thanks Adam, Thanks very much, Adam Alexander, very kind words.
Speaker 2 (44:08):
He has been a part of this show the entire.
Speaker 1 (44:10):
Time we have been on the air, and it means
more than you can possibly know to have him all
this time right there to call us top to our.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
School board update.
Speaker 1 (44:23):
Coming up, we have a lot more to go with
Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk
