Jace and Jarrett kick off the show talking about Colts football and what these practices have been looking like so far. Jarrett comments on being excited to see what the defense does this year, looking fresh. They hit on the quarterback battle and who they think should prevail, either Richardson or Jones. Kurt joins the show to talk about some racing and who came out with a win tonight. He talks about the winner and their team and the history behind them and their start. Don talks about the passing of the legendary Bob Hammel and what he meant to those around him. He touches on some of the pieces of work and experiences he had with him.

The Indiana Fever take the hard wood tomorrow at three

the season. Looking back into Major League Baseball currently ongoing
around the area, the Cleveland Guardians leads six to four

getting the win over Kansas City. They lost earlier, however,

The Cardinals are on the cusp of losing today as

We brought up briefly last hour Colts training camp that
he had there fourth day earlier today, kind of a

shorter practice earlier this afternoon rather and some of the
talk out from Colts camp. Obviously, the quarterback battle is
what everyone's kind of paying attention to, trying to see
if one guy or the other comes out with an

edge between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.

I'll bring you in real quick on this kind of
conversation and just how you feel about I guess the
Colts overall going into training camp, maybe some expectations and
if you are hoping for one guy or another perhaps
to win the starting quarterback job at some point.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
You know, I like quarterback battles because I mean, it
makes the guys compete, It makes the guy you know,
earn their job. And you know, for Richardson, unfortunately it's
come to this. I mean, he's supposed to be the
guy coming out of Florida in the fourth overall pick
for a reason. But he's obviously going to be a
raw talent. Was always going to be the thing with them. Unfortunately,
his injuries have really inhibited him from becoming what he can.
And you know, if I had to have a personal preference,
(06:33):
I think the Colts should start Daniel Jones. I think
he's the more veteran guy. I think the team's built
more on a veteran presence, signing you know, shar Various Ward,
and now he's up towards his thirties. Grover, Grover Stewart
and Forrest Buckner are both getting older into the thirties.
Now the team isn't getting into younger And if you
want to try to win now, I think Jones is
your guy.

Jones, of course, coming from the New York Giants, he
had that one great year leading New York to a
spot in the playoffs, Giants not making it very far,
but picks up a massive contract following that, and that's
when things kind of went sideways. And I remember when
the Giants drafted him, and it seemed like more Giants

fans not pleased with taking Daniel Jones. You had I
believe Josh Allen was in that draft among some few
other guys who are really some some of them stars,
some of them solidified as starting quarterbacks in the league.
But Jones, I think sometimes you just need to get out,
(07:37):
You need a new environment, You need to go somewhere
that is going to kind of make you want to
reset a little bit. And I think that could be
a good thing, especially for Jones coming over here, get
his mind away from the big Apple, the big city,
and focus on being the best he can be in
(07:59):
this one year deal that he has with the Colts.
It's going to be a proven year for him. It's
going to be a prove it year for Anthony Richardson.
So you're gonna have two guys who are wanting to
prove to their team that they can be a starting
quarterback in this league. There's only thirty two of those spots,

and Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson are going to be
going after that spot for the Indianapolis Colts. One guy
who is also a newcomer for the Colts, Cam Binnam.
On the defense, Jason mentioned Travarious Ward, a terrific defensive back.
Cam Bydam comes over from the Vikings, one of the younger,

solid options during the offseason. He actually was on Career
and Company this week on the fan at a training
camp at Grand Park, talking about what he has seen
from Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones so far in this
training camp.

They're both really mobile quarterbacks and that's one thing that
opens up an offense and that they're both capable of. Obviously,
we know both quarterbacks are capable of being a dual threat,
and especially with ar I've seen him going against the
Colts last year, watching him on film. Obviously Joe Flacco
started against us, but being able to watch the film
and see what he was capable of with his legs

and his arm strength, and saying with Daniel Jones being
able to do the same thing and me be able
to go against him the years he was in New York,
he beat us in the playoffs, So that's always a
forever rivalry in my mind because he knocked us out
in twenty twenty two. But both quarterbacks are really capable
of doing really good things.

The defense has looked good from what people who have
been out at training camp they have said, with Cam
Binden coming over Travarius Ward in that defensive backfield, the
weak spot, maybe at the linebacker spots. The front. The
front line, though, is a group that's been there for

a while now they've played together. Jason mentioned DeForrest Buckner,
Grover Stewart. You hope Quitty Pays takes a step up
lat two, who was a rookie last year. Guys like
that you want to see get into the backfield and
get to the opposing quarterbacks. I think this defense has
some Colts fans excited. I'm excited, that's for sure. Just

hope that they can keep things rolling into the regular
season opener.

behind schedule or went longer than, expected with a couple of,

thing you notice is that there is a significantly less
amount of drivers from The Cup series actually taking part

the drivers who are actually regulars.

World and now he will shift his focus to Tomorrow's

wallace will fill out that row one and really kind

not some guys that have a lot of. EXPERIENCE a
lot of the younger crowd is starting up front at

good shot and maybe a guy Like Ty gibbs who's

There, well, Yeah Chase, briscoe you, know, yeah a kid From,
india if a kid From, Mitchell, Indiana he's this is
basically his home. Track and, yeah he laid down a
really good lab for The hoss factor for The Hoss
factory team as well As joe gi for his previous
years and now coming in here With Joe, gibbs and
so you Have toyota locking out the front five. Positions

So toyota in and of itself has pace amongst all
the teams it. Represents but at the same, time all
of the teams that it, represents, well they occupy all
the five spots right there With Joe gibbs as well
as twenty three eleven. Racings so not exactly a surprise
to See Ty gibbs up there as well because of
that benefit of the power as. Well but when you
look down the rest of this starting lineup as, well

you got Aj allmendinger in the top, ten starting in
the starting top ten as, Well Austin. Sindrick you're going
to expect to see a good performance from. Him From Team.
PENSKE a couple of the surprises, though you Have Chase
elliott starting down in thirtieth. Position now he's one of
the GUYS i think who will probably be one of
the biggest movers. Tomorrow but you can't do all of
your moving on the.

found out That bob had, Died.

COURSE i Saw bob about a month, ago went down
to see. Him he was in hospice at that, time
or at LEAST i would have called it. Hospice he
was an assisted place for living and laying flat in
his back in, bed and, obviously but the interesting thing
was WHEN i went in, there he was sleeping AND

i just kind of stood at the head of his
bed for a couple of. Seconds the next THING i,
knew his eyes popped open and we started talking and
he was struggling a little. Bit but he was such
a wonderful, man just a tremendous, person number, one more
so than a writer or any of the other things
you've heard. About bob just a phenomenal. Individual one of

the smartest People i've ever been, around without, QUESTION i would,
say probably the best historian Of Indiana university athletics through
the last of maybe seventy five or eighty.

Years you asked him a question.

About indiana athletics and he had the answer virtually every.
Time and just a, phenomenal phenomenal. Person one of the
greatest WRITERS i think the state has ever, seen without,

with in The Blimbeington, paper The Indianapolis paper that he worked,

how much knowledge he had of just everything that was

It just was the personality That Bob hamill, had AND
i Think knight immediately realized what a good person he
was when he was interviewed for by him in the

finally after the six. Months AND i don't know how

the best at, that and he would be the first
to tell you another, course After Coach knight was let,
Go bob, Said i'm going to give this thing. Up he,
SAID i just don't feel comfortable doing. It after they
let Coach, knight you, know after let no Coach knight

conversation and just how you feel about I guess the
Colts overall going into training camp, maybe some expectations and
if you are hoping for one guy or another perhaps
to win the starting quarterback job at some point.

You know, I like quarterback battles because I mean, it
makes the guys compete, It makes the guy you know,
earn their job. And you know, for Richardson, unfortunately it's
come to this. I mean, he's supposed to be the
guy coming out of Florida in the fourth overall pick
for a reason. But he's obviously going to be a
raw talent. Was always going to be the thing with them. Unfortunately,
his injuries have really inhibited him from becoming what he can.
And you know, if I had to have a personal preference,
(06:33):
I think the Colts should start Daniel Jones. I think
he's the more veteran guy. I think the team's built
more on a veteran presence, signing you know, shar Various Ward,
and now he's up towards his thirties. Grover, Grover Stewart
and Forrest Buckner are both getting older into the thirties.
Now the team isn't getting into younger And if you
want to try to win now, I think Jones is
your guy.

Jones, of course, coming from the New York Giants, he
had that one great year leading New York to a
spot in the playoffs, Giants not making it very far,
but picks up a massive contract following that, and that's
when things kind of went sideways. And I remember when
the Giants drafted him, and it seemed like more Giants

fans not pleased with taking Daniel Jones. You had I
believe Josh Allen was in that draft among some few
other guys who are really some some of them stars,
some of them solidified as starting quarterbacks in the league.
But Jones, I think sometimes you just need to get out,

You need a new environment, You need to go somewhere
that is going to kind of make you want to
reset a little bit. And I think that could be
a good thing, especially for Jones coming over here, get
his mind away from the big Apple, the big city,
and focus on being the best he can be in
(07:59):
this one year deal that he has with the Colts.
It's going to be a proven year for him. It's
going to be a prove it year for Anthony Richardson.
So you're gonna have two guys who are wanting to
prove to their team that they can be a starting
quarterback in this league. There's only thirty two of those spots,

and Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson are going to be
going after that spot for the Indianapolis Colts. One guy
who is also a newcomer for the Colts, Cam Binnam.
On the defense, Jason mentioned Travarious Ward, a terrific defensive back.
Cam Bydam comes over from the Vikings, one of the younger,

solid options during the offseason. He actually was on Career
and Company this week on the fan at a training
camp at Grand Park, talking about what he has seen
from Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones so far in this
training camp.

They're both really mobile quarterbacks and that's one thing that
opens up an offense and that they're both capable of. Obviously,
we know both quarterbacks are capable of being a dual threat,
and especially with ar I've seen him going against the
Colts last year, watching him on film. Obviously Joe Flacco
started against us, but being able to watch the film
and see what he was capable of with his legs

and his arm strength, and saying with Daniel Jones being
able to do the same thing and me be able
to go against him the years he was in New York,
he beat us in the playoffs, So that's always a

found out That bob had, Died.

COURSE i Saw bob about a month, ago went down
to see. Him he was in hospice at that, time
or at LEAST i would have called it. Hospice he
was an assisted place for living and laying flat in
his back in, bed and, obviously but the interesting thing
was WHEN i went in, there he was sleeping AND

i just kind of stood at the head of his
bed for a couple of. Seconds the next THING i,
knew his eyes popped open and we started talking and
he was struggling a little. Bit but he was such
a wonderful, man just a tremendous, person number, one more
so than a writer or any of the other things
you've heard. About bob just a phenomenal. Individual one of
(24:40):
the smartest People i've ever been, around without, QUESTION i would,
say probably the best historian Of Indiana university athletics through
the last of maybe seventy five or eighty.

Years you asked him a question.

About indiana athletics and he had the answer virtually every.
Time and just a, phenomenal phenomenal. Person one of the
greatest WRITERS i think the state has ever, seen without,
question the most prolific writer from a newspaper perspective that
anybody in this state has ever. Been you would see

three and four stories after every, ballgame all written By
Bob hamil in The Herald times or The herald.

Telephone what made him such a gifted Writer his.

INTELLECT i, mean he was just one of the smartest

in front of, anybody but you asked him a, question

probably influenced a lot of, people especially those he worked
with in The Blimbeington, paper The Indianapolis paper that he worked,
for and even those papers back in his.

Experience he influenced everybody with how hardy worked and with
how much knowledge he had of just everything that was
going on in our.

quite a special relationship with FORMER iu basketball Coach Bob,
knight who has also since passed. On what made their

relationship so unique and, Special, WELL i think.

It just was the personality That Bob hamill, had AND
i Think knight immediately realized what a good person he
was when he was interviewed for by him in the
very beginning of his. CAREER i wasn't around the first
two years the Coach knight coached AT, iu and didn't
Know Bob hamill From adam and UNTIL i got here

in nineteen seventy. Three but they just had a very good,
relationship very very important, RELATIONSHIP i think for the both of. Them,
Obviously Bob hamill because of his ability to write stories
and those kinds of THINGS i think Influenced Bob knight
a lot in the sense of knowing that this guy

was a guy that was.

TRUSTWORTHY i think that was the most important.

Thing and the one riff that they had THAT i
know about was when The Harald times of The Harold
telephone printed a picture Of Coach knight Grabbing Jib. Whispman

was and there was a picture put in The Harald
times on the front page of the newspaper Of Coach

knight grabbing Jib whisman by the, jersey kind of pulling
him off the, floor and that really Infuriated Coach knight
because he thought That Bob hamill could dictate what the
newspaper did in regard to edit oriole, comment so to.
Speak and Obviously bob had nothing to do with that

picture being in the. Paper bob Hambl i'm talking, about
and they had a riff for about six. Months they
basically didn't, talk And i'm not sure who made the
first approach when they regained their, relationship BUT i know
this That Bob hamill was always one of those people
that because of his knowledge Of Coach knight and how

Smart knight was as a, person they mended that fence
finally after the six. Months AND i don't know how
it all came. ABOUT i don't know that story other
than to know that That whift was the only one
THAT i know that they ever.

Had and with him being your color analyst for a
little bit of, time what was he like on the?
Radio we all know what he was like in print
and the books that he. Wrote what was he like
when he did radio?

Stuff he would be the first to tell you that

He really. Did he didn't fit the profile of an.

Analyst bob was a guy that wanted to think about
everything he said before he said. It and as you,
know in our, business in the radio, business your glibness
is really important and being able to come up with
your thought immediately and the right thing to, say and
those kinds of. THINGS i, mean it's very spontaneous, stuff

And bob was not very spontaneous in that. Regard but
After max govern retired on nineteen ninety, Seven Coach knight
indicated to me that he would love to See bob
hamill be the color analyst because they had such a close,
relationship AND i.

Adhered to his.

Advice coach AND i gave me some advice on, occasion
and most of the TIME i didn't take it because
there were things he wanted me to do THAT i
just couldn't do from an objective. Standpoint but he did
suggest the coach That Bob hami will become our guy
After max, retired and so he did for three. Years,

again he was wonderful on the air because if you
needed to ask a question about something in the history
or something that recently happened that you forgot, about or
those kinds of, things he was just there to be
responsive in those ways and was one of the best
at doing that and bringing up stories and things like.
That but when it came to, Spontaneity bob was not

the best at, that and he would be the first
to tell you another, course After Coach knight was let,
Go bob, Said i'm going to give this thing. Up he,
SAID i just don't feel comfortable doing. It after they
let Coach, knight you, know after let no Coach knight
resigner or fired him or whatever you want to call.
It from that point, Forward bob, SAID i can't do it,

anymore and so that's when we started to hunt for
a new color.

Wrote all the books that he wrote About coach And,
Night i've read each and every one of. Them they
were all extremely well. WRITTEN i don't have a. FAVORITE

think that's the first, one and without, questioning it was
one of my favorites because nineteen seventy six was such
a special year and that team was well again the

last college basketball team to go undefeated in the, season
and so that would be my, favorite no question about.
It but he was a horrific, writer, and LIKE i,
said one of the most Prolific i've ever seen in
