Speaker 1 (00:01):
Sports Talk on Network Indiana. Jarret lewis with you, filling
in for Bob Lovell. Good to chat with Greg Rakestraw
last hour. We're now into the ten o'clock the hour.
Let's send it back to Jace Hodge for another sports
update once again. Great to be with you, Jarrett, alongside
our producer Ethan Patterson on a Saturday night. I'm Jay
(00:22):
Sodge for this an Indiana Sports Talk update. Let's get
right into it, beginning with the Indiana Fever, who recently
signed Ford Chloe Bibby to a seven day contract. In
today's she had to speak with the media for the
first time.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Obviously really physical, team, tough, fast paced and I like
that fast style, so I think that suits me a lot,
fast paced, suit through ball, and I think that's, you know,
exactly what I do. So hopefully I can, you know,
find my strides here and getting this rhythm.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
We also got to hear from head coach Stephanie White
on her first thoughts after Bibby practice today.
Speaker 5 (00:55):
Yeah, I mean her ability stretch the floor, to be
a shot maker, to career space on the interior for avy.
You know, her size certainly as well and as are
all things that we liked, and you know, now we
get an opportunity to see. She came in, she studied
the offense, and she's been good. She's been really good.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Bibby was most recently a member of the new WNBA team,
the Golden State Valkyries, but was released on June thirtieth.
The Indiana Fever take the hard wood tomorrow at three
pm as they take go on their arrival the Chicago
Sky if you were looking for their fourteenth win of
the season. Looking back into Major League Baseball currently ongoing
around the area, the Cleveland Guardians leads six to four
(01:37):
in the bottom of the ninth, one out away from
getting the win over Kansas City. They lost earlier, however,
and the first game the double headers, they fell five
to three to the hands of the Kansas City Royals.
The Cardinals are on the cusp of losing today as
they trail three to one to the San Diego Padres
in the bottom of the ninth. They are two ounce
away from taking the loss. And other news the Detroit Tigers.
(01:59):
They lost six to one to Toronto today. The Tigers
continue their streak of losses as they fall to sixty
to forty six, and the Blue Jays take the stronghold
currently in the American League Cincinnati Reds. Though they get
the win six to two, they are now a game
slash half game back of a wild cart spot. And now,
so how about those Cincinnati Reds on fire? And then
(02:21):
in the Battle of Chicago the Cubs. They get the
win six to one as they take down the White Sox.
The Cubs are now tied with the Milwaukee Brewers atop
the NL Central Uter Milwaukee fell to Miami and not
in local news but the Baltimore Orioles. They beat the
Rockies eighteen to nothing. Today that's the final there from Baltimore,
(02:41):
an outrageous score out on the East Coast and Minor
League baseball in the Indianapolis Indians, they lead five to
four in the bottom of the seventh the win ten
Caps trail seven nothing to the Cedar Rapids Colonels at
the end of the eighth inning and the South Bend
Cubs they get the win four to one over the
Dayton And then today wants more the NASCAR Xfinity Pennzoil
(03:04):
Race as Connor Zilich picked up his third straight win
in the series and come from behind Fashion he won
through six cautions in the race, he finishes first ahead
of Sam Mayer who won Stage one, Taylor Gray, who
led the last few laps in Kyle Larson, a known
Indianapolis racer. Tomorrow the Brickyard Larson will race again. Larson
(03:25):
was the victor last year in the Brickyard four hundred,
but he does not start in the top ten. The
top ten goes as follows Chase Briscoe, Bubba Wallace, Eric Jones,
Tyler Redick, ty Gibbs, all in Toyota Machines, the first
time that's ever happened in the Brickyard. Six is William
Byron a Chevy Chris Busher, and at seventh with the
(03:45):
Ford Carson Josvar At eighth with the Chevy following him
as his teammate A j Ammendinger, and then tenth is
Austin Sindrick. Other names that you might hear tomorrow In
twelfth is Kyle Busch, thirteenth is Larson, fifteenth Legano, twentieth
is Chase Ellieot and thirty ninth, well that's Denny hamlin
Ham looking to complete the career Grand Slam. He crashed
(04:05):
and qualifying.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
Here's Denny Hamlin and alls he makes his way to
the south short.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Shoot, makes his way through that midway point of the
south end of his course. Now works his way through
turn number two.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Try to not Mitchell mbe oh, and he'll hit the wall.
Speaker 6 (04:20):
Not gonna do it.
Speaker 7 (04:21):
We'll lose control of the car.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Lock it down, heavy contact with the front of that
car in at the inside retaining wall of the exit
of turn number two. That car will come to west
at the midway point of the back straight away.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
So now Hamlin, looking to be one of the favorites,
was p one in practice. He crashed out. He'll start
thirty ninth tomorrow for Network Indiana Sports, I'm Jay Sodge.
Speaker 1 (04:42):

We brought up briefly last hour Colts training camp that
he had there fourth day earlier today, kind of a
(05:28):
shorter practice earlier this afternoon rather and some of the
talk out from Colts camp. Obviously, the quarterback battle is
what everyone's kind of paying attention to, trying to see
if one guy or the other comes out with an
(05:49):
edge between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.
Speaker 8 (05:55):
Jace.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
I'll bring you in real quick on this kind of
conversation and just how you feel about I guess the
Colts overall going into training camp, maybe some expectations and
if you are hoping for one guy or another perhaps
to win the starting quarterback job at some point.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
You know, I like quarterback battles because I mean, it
makes the guys compete, It makes the guy you know,
earn their job. And you know, for Richardson, unfortunately it's
come to this. I mean, he's supposed to be the
guy coming out of Florida in the fourth overall pick
for a reason. But he's obviously going to be a
raw talent. Was always going to be the thing with them. Unfortunately,
his injuries have really inhibited him from becoming what he can.
And you know, if I had to have a personal preference,
(06:33):
I think the Colts should start Daniel Jones. I think
he's the more veteran guy. I think the team's built
more on a veteran presence, signing you know, shar Various Ward,
and now he's up towards his thirties. Grover, Grover Stewart
and Forrest Buckner are both getting older into the thirties.
Now the team isn't getting into younger And if you
want to try to win now, I think Jones is
your guy.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Jones, of course, coming from the New York Giants, he
had that one great year leading New York to a
spot in the playoffs, Giants not making it very far,
but picks up a massive contract following that, and that's
when things kind of went sideways. And I remember when
the Giants drafted him, and it seemed like more Giants
(07:15):
fans not pleased with taking Daniel Jones. You had I
believe Josh Allen was in that draft among some few
other guys who are really some some of them stars,
some of them solidified as starting quarterbacks in the league.
But Jones, I think sometimes you just need to get out,
(07:37):
You need a new environment, You need to go somewhere
that is going to kind of make you want to
reset a little bit. And I think that could be
a good thing, especially for Jones coming over here, get
his mind away from the big Apple, the big city,
and focus on being the best he can be in
(07:59):
this one year deal that he has with the Colts.
It's going to be a proven year for him. It's
going to be a prove it year for Anthony Richardson.
So you're gonna have two guys who are wanting to
prove to their team that they can be a starting
quarterback in this league. There's only thirty two of those spots,
(08:21):
and Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson are going to be
going after that spot for the Indianapolis Colts. One guy
who is also a newcomer for the Colts, Cam Binnam.
On the defense, Jason mentioned Travarious Ward, a terrific defensive back.
Cam Bydam comes over from the Vikings, one of the younger,
(08:46):
solid options during the offseason. He actually was on Career
and Company this week on the fan at a training
camp at Grand Park, talking about what he has seen
from Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones so far in this
training camp.
Speaker 9 (09:05):
They're both really mobile quarterbacks and that's one thing that
opens up an offense and that they're both capable of. Obviously,
we know both quarterbacks are capable of being a dual threat,
and especially with ar I've seen him going against the
Colts last year, watching him on film. Obviously Joe Flacco
started against us, but being able to watch the film
and see what he was capable of with his legs
(09:26):
and his arm strength, and saying with Daniel Jones being
able to do the same thing and me be able
to go against him the years he was in New York,
he beat us in the playoffs, So that's always a
forever rivalry in my mind because he knocked us out
in twenty twenty two. But both quarterbacks are really capable
of doing really good things.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
The defense has looked good from what people who have
been out at training camp they have said, with Cam
Binden coming over Travarius Ward in that defensive backfield, the
weak spot, maybe at the linebacker spots. The front. The
front line, though, is a group that's been there for
(10:05):
a while now they've played together. Jason mentioned DeForrest Buckner,
Grover Stewart. You hope Quitty Pays takes a step up
lat two, who was a rookie last year. Guys like
that you want to see get into the backfield and
get to the opposing quarterbacks. I think this defense has
some Colts fans excited. I'm excited, that's for sure. Just
(10:28):
hope that they can keep things rolling into the regular
season opener.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
For this network Indiana Sports Talk scoreboard update, I'm Jay
Songe will begin things here in Indianapolis as the Indy
eleven takedown f C Tulsa two to one to win
their group in the Yeager Mester Cup. They got things
started with a thirty eighth minute goal from ro Mario Williams,
and the second goal of the game went to f
C Tulsa's Lamar Bautista. One problem he scored in his
(10:58):
own Net eleven had two zero lead and they held
on to win two to one. Fold time from Indianapolis
as they will move on to the quarterfinals of the
Jegermeister Cup at WNBA the Indiana Fever they take on
the Chicago Sky tomorrow at three pm without Caitlin Clark again.
Sophie Cunningham talks about adapting without her.
Speaker 10 (11:19):
I don't think that it affects us anymore. You know,
if we have Kaitlyn Great and we know how to
play with her. If we don't have Caitlyn Great, we
know how to play without her. And I think that's
just so important. It gives people confidence that when she
is back, you know, they know their role, and then
when she's not, they have the confidence to come out
there and make big plays for us.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Fever and Sky will tip off once again three pm
tomorrow is the Fever look to stay above five hundred,
currently at thirteen and twelve. The finals quarters tell you
about in Major League Baseball. Locally, the Saint Louis Cardinals,
they fall three to one in Bush Stadium to the
San Diego Padres. The Guardians they win six to four
of the Worlds, but they lost the first game of
(11:55):
the double header Earlier this afternoon. The Cubs win six
to one over the White Socks, The Reds win six
to two over the Rains, and the Tigers fall six'
to one to The Blue. Jays, tomorrow The brickyard four.
Hundred Chase, brisco the local, man earning pole positions his
fifth overall poll of the, season and they'll start tomorrow
(12:16):
at two pm ON t AND T. Sports the green
flag will drop and we'll see The brickyard four.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
Hundred this Is Indiana Sports talk On Network. Indiana jared
lewis with you as we are into our second hour
On Indiana Sports. Talk we just wrapped up a little
bit of talk on The colts and how that defense
(12:41):
has been looking good so, far according to a couple
of reporters who've been able to check out training camp so,
far they've had four days At Grand park In. Westfield of,
course everyone wants to talk about the quarterback battle as.
Well Anthony richardson And Daniel. Jones we'll talk more about
that and how the rest of the team has looked
as training camp has picked up this. Week now will
(13:05):
shift gears and move on over TO. Nascar who Is
they're At Indianapolis Motor speedway this. Weekend practice got rained out.
Yesterday some showers also in the forecast for, today but
able to get things in as practice and qualifying for
The cup series was able to get, through and then
(13:26):
The exfinity, race which just wrapped up maybe a little
behind schedule or went longer than, expected with a couple of,
delays a few red, flags plenty of, cautions a lot
of action in This exfinity. Race Kurt darling was out
there to check it all out from the world's greatest.
Racecourse we'll, START i guess with The xfinity, Race. KURT
(13:49):
a big win for the nineteen year Old connor Zilich,
in a big win also for the team he races.
Speaker 11 (13:56):
For, yeah that's right, There Jared. Jr motors where it's
getting their one hundredth win as An exfinity. Team so
of course they are a kind of an offshoot of
The Hendrick motorsports, group but still it's an incredible achievement
For Dale Earnhardt, junior who got this team going just
about maybe just a little over a decade, ago and
(14:17):
they've finally been able to build this up into what
it is. Now of, Course Jed Justin allgeier was up
there competing for that one hundredth win as, well and
he had an unfortunate run in With Kyle, larson who
is who is THE Nascar Cup series regular contending in
the big race. Tomorrow late in the, race they got
(14:39):
into it on a restart and that just kind of
killed the day for both drivers and a fortune unfortunately
For Justin allgeyer who looked, really really. Strong but as you,
mentioned that opened the door For Connor, zilich who is
the points leader coming into the, race and he leaves
as the points leader as well as far as the
playoff picture is. Concerned, Now Justin allgeier is still the
(14:59):
over all points leader based on cumulative, points but Because
Connor zillich has those five, wins he is at the
top of the leaderboard for the playoff contention as that
stands going in now to what will be the last
three races of the season for The exfinity race for
The Exfinity series going into the regular, season then of
course you have the postseason after. That but it was
(15:20):
a pretty competitive. Race you had a few rain delays
as well here and, there but we were able to
get all one hundred laps turned in The pennzul two
fifty here.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Today, yeah it looks like fans were treated to a
really solid race leading up to the brick cru at
four hundred, tomorrow the nineteen year Old Connor zilch picks
up his sixth career win in The Xfinity. Series you
mentioned competitive some. Action Austin hill gets handed a reckless driving.
Penalty it appears with a crash Involving Eric almarola two
(15:52):
that happens between three and. Four it looks, like AND
i Believe hill had some words also not happy with WITH.
NASCAR a whole lot going on there with that.
Speaker 11 (16:03):
Collision, right some of the words That Austin hill said
over the radio cannot be repeated over this particular, radio but, uh,
nevertheless it was some colorful. Language but at the same,
Time Eric almroola had some had some terse words For
Austin hill in and of. Itself but when you look
at the replay over and over, There, jared it looks
(16:25):
that it looks just that much worse For Austin. Hill,
now the president has already been set with. This we've
had a similar issue happened within this particular case just
a few earlier on this, season and so when that,
HAPPENED nascar handed out a. SUSPENSION i would imagine That
Austin hill has a suspension coming in his future quite,
(16:47):
SOON i should, say because even though you can't really
you can't overtly see whether it was intentional or not
from from mine from mine's, eye it was pretty obvious
that there was at least some sort of reaction going
on there with the racing that was going on between
turns three and. Four SO i would say it's not
looking good For Austin. Hill he's already in the. Playoffs
(17:09):
he has three wins this, season but you're also probably
going to be losing a race that should certainly help
you from the playoff. Picture is concerned again going into that.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Postseason, okay it looks like maybe some future penalties added
on For Austin hill following This infinity. Race what's it
say when a guy Like Carl larson races in An
exfinity race before the REGULAR Nascar Cup series race. Tomorrow
larson gets in one of the Few Cup series drivers
who wants to get some extra laps. IN i, mean
(17:40):
he has all this, Experience he's one of the better
drivers obviously in the, series former, champion has been at
ims more than maybe anybody else who is there currently this.
Weekend him joining in The exfinity, race is THAT i
wouldn't say necessarily a, surprise but what do you think
the reasoning is behind?
Speaker 12 (17:58):
That just to get?
Speaker 11 (18:00):
Reps you, know he loves racing at The Indianapolis Motor
speedway and he is of course With Hendrick, motorsports and
The Hendrick motorsports will certainly get a few cars into
The exfinity lineup here and there throughout the. Season they
kind of have that rotating. Cast sometimes you'll See Alex
bowman do An exfinity, Race you'll See Kyle larson do.
It you may even See William byron do. It and
(18:22):
then from other teams as. Well Kyle busch does a
few races here and there throughout the. Season but one
thing you notice is that there is a significantly less
amount of drivers from The Cup series actually taking part
In exfinity races now because they've actually put a hamper
on that because of how many drivers were kind, OF i,
guess taking away from the, competition so to, speak from
(18:44):
the drivers who are actually regulars.
Speaker 12 (18:46):
Competing for a championship in The Xfinity.
Speaker 11 (18:48):
Series so but at the same, time you still have
these drivers that come down to maybe get a few
people to come out and watch them, race but Still Kyle.
Larson you, know he's getting reps simple as that he
won the race last year in The Cup, series and,
hey a little bit more experience goes a long, way
even though he's one of the best drivers in the.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
World and now he will shift his focus to Tomorrow's
brickyard four. Hundred he'll be starting on row, seventh so.
Thirteenth from the thirteenth position will Be Kyle larson on
the poll is The indiana, Kid Chase. Briscoe so a
really good qualifying run today For. Briscoe him And Bubba
wallace will fill out that row one and really kind
(19:27):
of an interesting first couple of, rows NOT i mean
not some guys that have a lot of. EXPERIENCE a
lot of the younger crowd is starting up front at
The brickyard four. Hundred you Think Chase briscoe has a
good shot and maybe a guy Like Ty gibbs who's
starting on the third. Row kind of a surprise.
Speaker 11 (19:47):
There, well, Yeah Chase, briscoe you, know, yeah a kid From,
india if a kid From, Mitchell, Indiana he's this is
basically his home. Track and, yeah he laid down a
really good lab for The hoss factor for The Hoss
factory team as well As joe gi for his previous
years and now coming in here With Joe, gibbs and
so you Have toyota locking out the front five. Positions
(20:08):
So toyota in and of itself has pace amongst all
the teams it. Represents but at the same, time all
of the teams that it, represents, well they occupy all
the five spots right there With Joe gibbs as well
as twenty three eleven. Racings so not exactly a surprise
to See Ty gibbs up there as well because of
that benefit of the power as. Well but when you
look down the rest of this starting lineup as, well
(20:29):
you got Aj allmendinger in the top, ten starting in
the starting top ten as, Well Austin. Sindrick you're going
to expect to see a good performance from. Him From Team.
PENSKE a couple of the surprises, though you Have Chase
elliott starting down in thirtieth. Position now he's one of
the GUYS i think who will probably be one of
the biggest movers. Tomorrow but you can't do all of
your moving on the.
Speaker 6 (20:50):
Track you have to do.
Speaker 11 (20:51):
It in the pitch as, Well so there's a lot
of nuances to this race that you can certainly look,
for But Kyle larson will certainly be right. There Brad
Keselowski Yle busch is also starting. Twelve he is on
the outside looking in of the playoff position right, now
so he has a lot of pressure on himself to
try and get a good. Performance so lots of storylines
to get ready for The brickyard four, hundred And i'm
(21:12):
hoping it'll be an exciting race coming, up these five
last five, races getting ready for the playoffs and real.
Speaker 1 (21:17):
Quick Denny, hamlin who crashed earlier today during his, run
he's going to come from thirty. Ninth he's trying to
win The brickyard four hundred for the first time and
complete the so Called Crown jewel race all four of
Those Crown. Jewels what do you? Think his chances are.
Speaker 8 (21:35):
Not?
Speaker 11 (21:36):
Good but at the same, time It's Denny. Hamlin he
knows how To i've written to circumnavigate this, course so
we'll see what he can. Do but, yeah he's trying
to close out that Career Grand. Slam this is the
last one to do, it so he has to give
the job done. Tomorrow all.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
Right Kurt darling joining us On Indiana Sports talk talking
about A Nascar cup series AT ims this. Weekend The
brickyard four hundred is. Tomorrow the green flag waves at two. O'clock,
kurt thanks for joining, us my, friend you bet welcome
back To Indiana Sports talk here On Network. Indiana good
(22:11):
to catch up With Kurt, darling who is at The
Indianapolis Motor speedway all day today and we'll be there
tomorrow for The brickyard four hundred. Again the green flag
for that race waves at two O'clock eastern. Time Chase
briscoe From, Mitchell, indiana we'll be leading the field to
green for that, race And Denny, hamlin who we mentioned
(22:34):
wrecked during his qualifying. Run we'll have to try to
win The brickyard from the back row from thirty ninth
and to complete the Career Grand. Slam we'll move things over.
NOW a great conversation had Between John herrick And Don
fisher of The Indiana. Hoosiers the voice of The hoosiers
(23:00):
and plenty of their sports, teams football and basketball along
for a long time has been the voice of The
hoosiers and talking About Bob, hamill who died a week ago,
today at the age of eighty, eight was an award
winning sports. EDITOR i lived in The bloomington area for
(23:25):
much of his. Life just, so if you Know indiana,
sports if you know The bloomington, area you Know Bob,
hamill who died at the age of eighty Eight saturday.
Night here is that conversation That john had with the
voice of The, Hoosiers John.
Speaker 7 (23:41):
Fisher DON i know you Knew bob pretty, well AND
i know you worked with him on the radio quite a.
Bit what were your just your overall impressions when you
found out That bob had, Died.
Speaker 12 (23:52):
Well, sadness of.
Speaker 8 (23:54):
COURSE i Saw bob about a month, ago went down
to see. Him he was in hospice at that, time
or at LEAST i would have called it. Hospice he
was an assisted place for living and laying flat in
his back in, bed and, obviously but the interesting thing
was WHEN i went in, there he was sleeping AND
(24:17):
i just kind of stood at the head of his
bed for a couple of. Seconds the next THING i,
knew his eyes popped open and we started talking and
he was struggling a little. Bit but he was such
a wonderful, man just a tremendous, person number, one more
so than a writer or any of the other things
you've heard. About bob just a phenomenal. Individual one of
(24:40):
the smartest People i've ever been, around without, QUESTION i would,
say probably the best historian Of Indiana university athletics through
the last of maybe seventy five or eighty.
Speaker 12 (24:53):
Years you asked him a question.
Speaker 8 (24:55):
About indiana athletics and he had the answer virtually every.
Time and just a, phenomenal phenomenal. Person one of the
greatest WRITERS i think the state has ever, seen without,
question the most prolific writer from a newspaper perspective that
anybody in this state has ever. Been you would see
(25:17):
three and four stories after every, ballgame all written By
Bob hamil in The Herald times or The herald.
Speaker 7 (25:25):
Telephone what made him such a gifted Writer his.
Speaker 8 (25:29):
INTELLECT i, mean he was just one of the smartest
people you've ever been. Around never flaunted that to anybody
in front of, anybody but you asked him a, question
he almost always had an answer for. It is an,
intellect was. Phenomenal he read, everything AND i think he
(25:51):
probably influenced a lot of, people especially those he worked
with in The Blimbeington, paper The Indianapolis paper that he worked,
for and even those papers back in his.
Speaker 12 (26:03):
Early days of his writing.
Speaker 8 (26:05):
Experience he influenced everybody with how hardy worked and with
how much knowledge he had of just everything that was
going on in our.
Speaker 7 (26:15):
World Radio voice of The Indiana Hoosiers Don fisher joining
us right now to talk about the life and career
Of Bob, hamill who Died saturday at the age of eighty. Eight,
DON i also know That bob was known for having
quite a special relationship with FORMER iu basketball Coach Bob,
knight who has also since passed. On what made their
(26:35):
relationship so unique and, Special, WELL i think.
Speaker 8 (26:38):
It just was the personality That Bob hamill, had AND
i Think knight immediately realized what a good person he
was when he was interviewed for by him in the
very beginning of his. CAREER i wasn't around the first
two years the Coach knight coached AT, iu and didn't
Know Bob hamill From adam and UNTIL i got here
(27:00):
in nineteen seventy. Three but they just had a very good,
relationship very very important, RELATIONSHIP i think for the both of. Them,
Obviously Bob hamill because of his ability to write stories
and those kinds of THINGS i think Influenced Bob knight
a lot in the sense of knowing that this guy
(27:22):
was a guy that was.
Speaker 12 (27:23):
TRUSTWORTHY i think that was the most important.
Speaker 8 (27:25):
Thing and the one riff that they had THAT i
know about was when The Harald times of The Harold
telephone printed a picture Of Coach knight Grabbing Jib. Whispman
this is back in nineteen seventy, SEVEN i think it,
was and there was a picture put in The Harald
times on the front page of the newspaper Of Coach
(27:48):
knight grabbing Jib whisman by the, jersey kind of pulling
him off the, floor and that really Infuriated Coach knight
because he thought That Bob hamill could dictate what the
newspaper did in regard to edit oriole, comment so to.
Speak and Obviously bob had nothing to do with that
(28:08):
picture being in the. Paper bob Hambl i'm talking, about
and they had a riff for about six. Months they
basically didn't, talk And i'm not sure who made the
first approach when they regained their, relationship BUT i know
this That Bob hamill was always one of those people
that because of his knowledge Of Coach knight and how
(28:30):
Smart knight was as a, person they mended that fence
finally after the six. Months AND i don't know how
it all came. ABOUT i don't know that story other
than to know that That whift was the only one
THAT i know that they ever.
Speaker 7 (28:44):
Had and with him being your color analyst for a
little bit of, time what was he like on the?
Radio we all know what he was like in print
and the books that he. Wrote what was he like
when he did radio?
Speaker 8 (28:55):
Stuff he would be the first to tell you that
he was not gifted in that. Department he, was.
Speaker 12 (29:03):
He really. Did he didn't fit the profile of an.
Speaker 8 (29:07):
Analyst bob was a guy that wanted to think about
everything he said before he said. It and as you,
know in our, business in the radio, business your glibness
is really important and being able to come up with
your thought immediately and the right thing to, say and
those kinds of. THINGS i, mean it's very spontaneous, stuff
(29:28):
And bob was not very spontaneous in that. Regard but
After max govern retired on nineteen ninety, Seven Coach knight
indicated to me that he would love to See bob
hamill be the color analyst because they had such a close,
relationship AND i.
Speaker 12 (29:44):
Adhered to his.
Speaker 8 (29:45):
Advice coach AND i gave me some advice on, occasion
and most of the TIME i didn't take it because
there were things he wanted me to do THAT i
just couldn't do from an objective. Standpoint but he did
suggest the coach That Bob hami will become our guy
After max, retired and so he did for three. Years,
(30:08):
again he was wonderful on the air because if you
needed to ask a question about something in the history
or something that recently happened that you forgot, about or
those kinds of, things he was just there to be
responsive in those ways and was one of the best
at doing that and bringing up stories and things like.
That but when it came to, Spontaneity bob was not
(30:31):
the best at, that and he would be the first
to tell you another, course After Coach knight was let,
Go bob, Said i'm going to give this thing. Up he,
SAID i just don't feel comfortable doing. It after they
let Coach, knight you, know after let no Coach knight
resigner or fired him or whatever you want to call.
It from that point, Forward bob, SAID i can't do it,
(30:53):
anymore and so that's when we started to hunt for
a new color.
Speaker 7 (30:56):
Analyst do you have a favorite book That Bob hamil?
Speaker 8 (31:00):
Wrote all the books that he wrote About coach And,
Night i've read each and every one of. Them they
were all extremely well. WRITTEN i don't have a. FAVORITE
A night with The hoosiers is probably the. FIRST i
think that's the first, one and without, questioning it was
one of my favorites because nineteen seventy six was such
a special year and that team was well again the
(31:24):
last college basketball team to go undefeated in the, season
and so that would be my, favorite no question about.
It but he was a horrific, writer, and LIKE i,
said one of the most Prolific i've ever seen in
regard to daily. Newspapers, again two three, stories maybe even
four stories in the paper about a game that was,
(31:45):
played and he covered the beat almost by himself throughout his.
Speaker 7 (31:49):
Career THAT'S iyu radio Voice Don fisher on the passing

Network Indiana Sports, Update I'm jasas looking at THE. Mlb
all games locally are. Final The royals defeat The guardians
earlier to, think but The guardians get revenge in the
night cap of the doubleheader as they win six of
four in the.
Speaker 4 (34:01):
Final, there The cardinals lose three one at home To San.
Diego The cubs get the win over The White sox
six to. One The tigers also six to one on
the losing sign as they lose six to one To,
toronto and Then, jarrett how about your red six to
two winners over The Tampa Bay. Rays they are now
just one game back of The San Diego padres for
(34:22):
the last and final wild card spot in The National.
League as for The Indianapolis, colts they finished Up day
four of training camp today at six and the other
day we heard from new defensive coordinator Lou anarumo regarding
the progress that he and he's in his defensive play
like yours arm.
Speaker 13 (34:40):
MAKING i think it's a good, start you, know only
two days into, it but you, know we're always going
to emphasize the fundamentals of playing with leverage and being titan,
coverage and the guys, are you, know starting to get
a feel for it and matching rounds pretty good so.
Speaker 4 (34:53):
Far The colts will continue the preparation in training camp
tomorrow as they prepare For august seventh against The Baltimore
ravens In. Baltimore It's week one of THE nfl. Preseason
tomorrow is The brickyard four hundred at The Indianapolis Motor.
Speedway the top five goes as follows good.
Speaker 6 (35:12):
BY ppg and it's gonna be All toyotas in the
top five With Chase brisco on the, Poll Bubba wallace
joining him on the front Row Eric jones starting. Third
you Have Joe gibbs racing With chaseprisco twenty three eleven
With Bubba, wallace And Legacy Motor club With Eric. Jones
all Three Toyota factory teams represented in the top.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Three For Network Indiana, Sports I'm Jay. Sodge welcome back
Into Indiana Sports talk On Network. Indiana Jerry LEWIS swi
you our Producer Ethan patterson And Jace sodge providing the
scoreboard updates for you tonight and as mentioned in The
brickyard four hundred, Tomorrow jace wilberturn for that produce that
(35:53):
race you can listen to starting at. Well pre race
coverage starts well before that, race which green flag will
drop at two. O'clock Kyle, larson the defending race. Winner
you'll have to work through a little bit of traffic
starting from the thirteenth row to try to go back
(36:14):
to back at The, brickyard It's Chase briscoe on the
pole And Bubba wallace filling out row. One we'll talk
a little. More colt says training camp has wrapped up
for this. Week the team will have the day off
tomorrow and then back at it for A monday practice
(36:34):
that we'll start at ten am.
Speaker 5 (36:38):
On.
Speaker 1 (36:38):
Monday and we mentioned the quarterback battle Between Daniel jones
And Anthony richardson that's BEEN i don't know if it's
been heating, up but it's always going to be a
topic of conversation when we're thinking about The colts over
the next couple of weeks leading up to their first preseason,
game which is coming. Up it's less than two weeks away,
(37:01):
NOW i, believe against The Baltimore. Ravens three preseason games
and then the regular season, opener which will be at
home At Lucas Oil. Staium The colts will take on
The Miami Dolphins september. SEVENTH a couple of newcombers other
Than Daniel jones and one of those which we've already
heard from, before Cam, bynham who's going to be playing
(37:25):
the one of THE dB, spots WHICH i think is
one of the, better very much improved over the over the,
years the much much better side of That colts defense
with Cam. Bynam he was asked joining The queer And
Company show if he feels like a cult Yet he
(37:45):
had spent some time In minnesota and now he's here In.
Speaker 9 (37:49):
Indianapolis, YEAH lta has made it feel LIKE i was
A colt just getting, here being able to meet the
guys and be able, to you, know just be in the,
facility being around other, people and just being able to
meet the staff and just meeting everybody made me feel
at home because they welcomed me with open. Arms nobody
was you, know everybody was just super welcoming and super
cool about me being a new, guy to the point
(38:11):
WHERE i only felt like a new guy for a
couple of. Days and ONCE i started to you, know familiarize,
myself especially with THE, dbs then started to grow with
the defense and started to meet some guys on the,
offense then it feels like a family at this, point
so bid.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Them you kind of hear that a, LOT i think
from from players with uh maybe it's just The midwest
nice or something like, that but when it comes to The,
colts it does kind of feel like. Family you hear
that from a lot from players and even fans who
root for this. Team, jase you we were talking about
(38:47):
the defense earlier and how you, know we like we
like the back, end we Like Travaria, sword we like Cam,
biden we like some other guys that are going to
be playing in the corner and nickel, spots and that
front line has been a group that's played with each
other for a couple of years. Now he talked about
guys like The Forrest buckner And Grover, stewart and you
(39:08):
have some other key pieces along that front. Line it's
the linebacker core that kind of has you just a
little bit worried or maybe that's the weak.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
Spot, YEAH i Mean zai Or franklin he just had
that ankle surgery. Recently, no he's not even participating currently
in training. Camp so right now your best linebacker on
the roster Is Jalen, carlis who you, know is, newer
and it's going to be tough for him to meet
that linebacker one With zaire not planning right. Now and
then in the off season you lose. Ej, speed you
Lose Grant, stewart who was a hard playmaker all year
(39:39):
long hospital teams and you know at the linebacker spot
when he was. Needed so the linebacker spot is really
really lacking right. Now but everything, else like you, said defensive,
wise looks really.
Speaker 1 (39:49):
Good, yeah and this, team the defensive side really IS
i think can win some games for The colts this.
Year offensive, side the playmakers are. There you Have Michael
pittman And Alec pierce at the one and, Two josh,
downs who's going to be in the, slot who had
a really good, SEASON i, thought or it just feels
like he's continuing to get, better that speedster who can
(40:12):
move around the field a lot for The colts and
really spread out that. Offense and of Course Jonathan Taylor
Khalil herbert is going to back him up this. Year
the playmakers are, there hopefully the quarterback play will be.
There welcome back Into Indiana's Sports talk On Network Indiana.
(40:33):
ETHAN i don't know if you saw this or. Not
are you a fan or a follower of The Savannah.
Bananas by, CHANCE i can.
Speaker 14 (40:41):
Get down with. IT i think that it's a good
way to watch baseball if you're not a huge baseball.
Speaker 1 (40:46):
PERSON i don't know if it's a good idea to. Start, well,
yeah we'll go into it. Anyways BUT i know it
gets people some people riled up when you talk about
The Savanna. Bananas BUT i, mean you can't put down
what they've been able to do over the past couple of,
years selling out the stadiums and the ballparks that they've
been able to do over the past couple of. YEARS
(41:07):
i remember when they sold Out Victory field for the
first time maybe a year or two, ago and now
it's mob, parks it's college football. Stadiums, Well Joey chestnut
is now involved with the not he's not like a
part of the, team but he was. Tonight he was
an honorary. Member and they do the banana dog. Challenge
(41:28):
this was at The Phillies ballpark In, Philadelphia Assistans Bank.
Park Joey chestnut takes on the banana. Dog it looks
like a regular banana kinda with the hot, dog you,
know obviously like the shape of, it.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
And he.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
Wins of, course he's gonna win any. COMPETITION i think
that you put him. In but he took on some
rather large men in this, competition and he of course dominates.
Them in three. Minutes he eats fourteen banana. Dogs you banana,
(42:13):
guy very far from, It, jase banana. Guy all, right what's?
That probably? Not probably? Not what's a eating? Competition? Jase
you think you could?
Speaker 4 (42:26):
Win, Ooh i'm gonna have to go with probably chicken? Tenders,
okay chicken? Tenders from?
Speaker 1 (42:35):
Where do you have a?
Speaker 4 (42:36):
Preference IF i had to, pick then it'd be raising. Gangs,
oh great.
Speaker 14 (42:40):
Choice, yeah that's. Good Ethan, uh not to be bougie or,
anything BUT i probably do Crab, Lakes, Okay LIKE i
could go to town on. Him but you.
Speaker 1 (42:50):
There's probably not an eating competition where That Joey chestsunt
could lose when you think about.
Speaker 14 (42:57):
It, now he's got a bigger stomach than the rest of.
Speaker 1 (43:00):
Us in that. Jaw have you ever seen his? JAW i,
mean that's why they call him. Jaws.
Speaker 14 (43:04):
Yeah he was at The pacer game AND i couldn't
even watch the. GAME i was looking at his.
Speaker 1 (43:08):
Jaw of, course he's won The Saint Amio's Shrimp cocktail
eating contests numerous. Times he's a seventeen time maybe eighteen
time after this Year Nathan's Hot dog eating contest On Coney.
Island the dude is a machine that caught my eye
today taking part in The Banana dog. Challenge so you,
(43:30):
KNOW i might have a banana, here here and there for,
breakfast but to eat that MANY i think it was
fourteen in three minutes and taking down some rather large
men in the. Process the dude is. Great he's An indiana.
Legend he's what makes this country so. Awesome so shout
(43:51):
