Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Friday Night. It's the legendary Indiana Sports Talk. I'm
Mark Dyketon in for Bob Lobble, who will be back
next Friday to make his season debut. He will join
us there. I think Eddie Garrison colleague over here at
the Fan he will be on hosting tomorrow night.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Got plenty to get into again. Joel A.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Rickson of the Indie Start going to join us in
just about fifteen minutes. Kevin Bowen on the program as well.
Plus we'll get the minor league updates from Howard Kellman,
Brendan King, and Mike Moss throughout the evening. But Nathaniel Finch,
you're up now with a scoreboard update. Mark Dyton and
our producer Ethan Patterson. A pleasure to be hanging out
with you guys on this great Friday night from Monument
Circle downtown Indianapolis.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Plenty to talk about. Let's start with the Indiana Fever
final score.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
Fever eighty eight, Wings seventy eight. It's a big tub
of a big tea. And now you know the Fever
have one four in a row for the first time
this year.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
That is John No. One the Fever Radio Network. First
time winning four in a row this year. This is
the first time the Fever have been four games above
five hundred since two thousand and fifteen. A big time
turnaround for a team still playing without Caitlin Clark. She's
missed the last six games with a groin injury. Indiana
still winning without her, beating the Wings by ten, that is,
(01:17):
with the top pick Page Becker's scoring twenty two points.
Here's how the box score looked for Indiana. Twenty three
points from Kelsey Mitchell, she's hit twenty plus and now
sixteen games this year. Fifteen points from Aery McDonald, and
then double doubles both Natasha Howard and Elijah Boston, the
two bigs on the team. A big time performance from
(01:38):
a handful of these Fever players. A ten point win
against the Dallas Wings. Taking a look at some scores
in Major League Baseball, the Cubs get a win today,
one to zero. The shutout from Wrigley Field. They defeat
the Orioles. As for the Cincinnati Reds earlier this afternoon,
(02:06):
he goes up three lefty on lefty, and he goes OPO.
How about that that was? Will Benson put the score
three to nothing. The Reds hang on win three to
two at home against the Braves. Now these two teams
head to Bristol, that is the Bristol Motor Speedway. A
big one tomorrow in Tennessee. Should be a fun set
up there all right. Else, swear the Tigers fault. Today
(02:28):
Detroit played in Philadelphia five to for the final. There
the Guardians defeat the Twins. This one took extra innings.
It was a three to two win for Cleveland. We've
got a couple of scores from around the Midwest that
is currently ongoing. Coach Lovels Cardinals zero zero. That's early
on the bottom of the second in San Diego to
(02:48):
play the Padres and the White Sox just got things underway.
And Anaheim they play the Angels end of the first
for scoreless there as well. Minor League baseball tied up
as of right. Wow, the Indians tie it up now
three to three in Iowa against the Cubs middle of
the seventh. That'll be a fun one to keep an
eye on over the next hour or so. The Cubs
(03:09):
couldn't get it done, that is the South Bend Cubs.
Brendan King will tell us all about it.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Five to three.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
The final Quad Cities with the win in South Bend
and we are in the top of the ninth inning.
Not looking good for the Fort Wayne ten camps. Just
a couple of outs left down nine to two against
the Great Lakes Loons. Let's talk about some football. The
Colts a night practice yesterday in training camp for the
first time ever.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
Great atmosphere and iight the fan support to come out.
Obviously having the night practice here was phenomenal. Shoot, it
felt kind of like a little fall night tonight, but
it was great, good competition back and forth, love to effort,
love the energy from our guys tonight. So it was
really good. Wanted to bring back like that Friday night
peel when you're in high school, playing under the lights.
That was always a special time for myself and a
lot of these guys you know, doing that. So to
have that opportunity to do it here, you know, at
(03:54):
Grand Park in front of our fans, I thought it
was really special.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
It's Colts coach Shane Steichen, Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones in
a quarterback competition.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Here is the former all the greats.
Speaker 6 (04:03):
They always do more, They do more than other people
are expecting them to do and you know, after last season,
I feel like I needed to do more, you know,
not only for the team, but for myself. You know,
if I want a so called it be great, and
I want to be in the Hall of Fame one day,
you know, I have to do more.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
It's also a quarterback competition in South Ben Marcus Freeman
on what it will take to get the win.
Speaker 7 (04:23):
It's going to be consistency. I've always said they will
determine who's the starring quarterback. We want to see guys
that are consistent. We want our quarterbacks, all of them
to be consistent. But who can be the most consistent,
Who can take care of the football, who can continue
to keep our offense moving forward?
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Kenny minj Carr, Blake Heats and Daniel Finch's Indiana Sports Talk.
I'm Mark dukon Nathaniel Finch, thank you for that scoreboard update.
Well here through more from Nanthaniel throughout the Knight. Ethan
Patterson on the ones and two's for producing Joel A.
Erickson going to join us in a little under ten minutes.
But before we get there, the Fever got a big
win over the aus Wings eighty eight to seventy eight.
That makes what four wins in a row for the Fever,
(04:59):
So just fight no, Kaitlin Clark. They've actually looked really,
really good since the All Star break. They are now
sixteen and twelve on the season, third in the Eastern
Conference Division. When we see Kaitlyn Clarkin, I'm not sure.
We've gotten very few updates since then. They just say,
you know, she's day day, she's this, and that will reevaluate.
We'll see where that is. They are in the middle
(05:19):
of a four game road trip, four or the last
or four straight games on the road, five of the
last six on the road. So they'll take on the
minnes Seattle Storm on a Sunday that is an ABC game,
so we'll see how that goes, and then they play
the La Sparks Phoenix Mercury and then they return home
on Saturday, August ninth, take on the Chicago Sky and
(05:39):
Angel Reese. So when we see Caitlin Clark again is
to be determined. But the Fever played very very well
without her. They struggled when she was first out with
the injury originally. Now she's been out with the growing
injury once again and they're playing pretty well. So four
straight wins for the Indiana Fever. We'll see if they
can make it five when they take on the Seattle
Storm on Sunday. So going back to the Colts here,
(06:02):
we had some Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones discussion. We'll
get more into that with Joel A. Rickson in a
little under ten minutes here when he joins us from
the Indie Star. Guys, I'm curious your thoughts so far
of how the Colts have handled training camp. Do you
like that they've kind of divvied up the starts and
the plays with Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, Or do
(06:24):
you want them to come out and name a starter
in the near future, because for now, I kind of
like the way they've handled it. I'm curious how that
will transition in preseason when it comes to divving up
snaps and who gets the nod? Does who start on
Thursday against the Ravens. Does that give you a clear
indication of who's got the edge in the quarterback competition
or do you think Shane Stecken's going to hold it
close to the vest And we won't find this out
(06:45):
until we inch closer to the end of the preseason.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
I think we got a way at least a couple
of preseason games and see how they do against live action.
I like what they've done so far, and I don't
think that they're going to name the starter anytime soon,
even though I'm sure Stika knows who he wants to
be the star and who he thinks has the edge
right now, but he's certainly not going to reveal that
or or announce the starting quarterback until much closer to
the season. You remember when Richardson was named the starter
(07:10):
pretty early on into camp his rookie year. It was
Jim Mersey who came out and announced it. Right It
fella goes more his decision maybe than Stichens. This time,
they're going to let it play out. They're going to
let this competition. I mean, it's we've talked about it
really all off season. Competition is what breeds this success
for this ball club. So they're gonna let the competition
go on really as long as they can until it
(07:30):
is clearly obvious to everybody in the locker room who
the better quarterback is right now.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Yeah, I'm really curious to see exactly, you know, because
I think we can all agree that the pressure is
on from the front office on down. Like we know,
obviously Jim Rsay passed away, the daughters have taken over
at this point. When that did happen, when that transition
of power occurred, the draft had already happened, were already
getting into mini camps and all that stuff. So the
(07:56):
daughters didn't really get a chance Carly or say Gordon
what I didn't get chance to put their thumb print
on the staff. So maybe they have thoughts on Chris
Ballard may if they have thoughts on Shane Stikeen At
this point, they were going to make massive changes before
all that got underway. So this season I feel like,
from the top on down is a transition year for
the Colts. You know, could they win eight, nine, ten games? Maybe,
(08:20):
but I think this is just kind of a year
where the ownership has changed. We're on the Chris Ballot
hot seat watch for what I feel like it feels
like almost a decade at this point.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Shane Stiking Can he finally get the offense to go?
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Can we see this team start rolling a little bit
with his offensive mindset, house Lu and Rumo handle the defense.
And then obviously we have the uncertainty of quarterback with
Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. Daniel Jones doesn't owe you
anything after this season. He could he could try to
go get the bag like Sam Darnold did with Minnesota
last year, and if he has a pretty decent year,
he could get a monster deal from some other team
(08:53):
around here and leave you high and dry. And Anthony Richardson,
I mean, at the end of this year, you have
to make a final decision on whether or not you're
gonna pick up that fifth year option. So whether he
plays well or not, I still think Anthony Richardson will
be on the team next year. I don't think at
the moment they're going to pick up that fifth year option.
Why would you. You haven't seen enough from him, you
haven't seen the consistency, and you just hasn't been healthy
(09:13):
enough to honestly earn that fifth year option. But at
the very least, they'll keep him on his rookie deal
for next year. But if he struggles and he gets
the not in Week one or whatever, it is, Like,
I'm just curious how long that leash is for Anthony
Richardson because with all these job security questions for Chris
Ballard or Shane Steiken. I could see where if he's
(09:34):
not playing well and they start feeling the pressure of
not winning games. If they come out and lay an
egg against the Miami Dolphins, who are just ravaged in
the secondary already and they haven't even played a preseason game.
If you get beaten by the Dolphins once again in
the opening game of the season, I mean, the.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Pressure is gonna be ratchet up even more so.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
If they do go with Anthony Richardson to start the season,
He's really got to play well. I'll be curious to see,
you know, how long that leash is because if he's strung,
are they going to go to Daniel Jones and give
him the hook? And what does that mean for Daniel
Anthony Richardson's future going forward and all that. There's a
lot of questions for the Colts. I'm looking forward to
the season getting underway. Preseason opener again a week six
days out from this point. They will take on the
(10:13):
Baltimore Ravens out there in Baltimore.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Should be a fun one.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Joey Erickson of The Indie Star going to join us
on the other side. There's also a scoreboard update from
Tanna Finch on the other side. This is Indiana Sports Talk.
I'm Mark dcton. We'll see you in just a minute.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
It's final in Dallas. The Indiana Fever get win in
a row number four, the first time they are four
games above five hundred since twenty and fifteen. Hard to believe, right,
I'm Nathaniel Finch. The Fever beat the Wings tonight in Dallas.
Eighty eight to seventy eight is the final score. Kelsey
Mitchell leads a team with twenty three points and for
that matter, leads the game with that margin. A double
(10:51):
double from both Natasha Howard and a Leah Boston. The
teams two biggs. Fifteen points from the point guard tonight,
Aery McDonald. She's playing point and starting because Caitlin Clark
still on the mend. She just missed her sixth straight
game with a right groin injury. Of course, it's her
fourth different soft tissue injury since Trany Camp will keep
(11:12):
an eye on when she returns. Still no clue on
that timetable. Taking a look at some scores in Major
League Baseball, the two Midwest games that are going on
right now. How about the White Sox Ethan Patterson. You'll
be happy to see your team ahead two to zero,
Chicago defeating the Angels right now, just through a couple
of innings that in Anaheim, and then the Cardinals also
(11:34):
out West, scoreless through two and a half innings. Will
keep the update on both of those as we go.
As far as the games that have already gone final,
the Reds get the best of the Braves that series,
even as both teams had two. Now Tennessee tomorrow the
Bristol Motor Speedway hosting a baseball game that's going to
be epic. The Reds defeating the Braves three to two
(11:55):
is that final score? Mark dyked and you're happy. Your
Cubs win one to zero today at home against the Orioles,
a nice little shut out, Kate Horton pitching five good
innings for the Cubs. The Tigers the lone team so
far to fall in the Midwest five to four of
the Phillies get the best of them. The Guardians win
three to two against the Twins. It's Indiana sports Talk.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
I'm Mark Dychon, and joining me next is none other
than Joel Ericson of the Indianapols. Starry covers the Colts
and Joel, thank you for joining me this evening. First question,
though nothing to do with football. We will get into
the football discussion first. But you are a diehard Milwaukee
Brewers fan. I'm a diehard Cubs fan. We are at
odds when it comes to our rooting interest in baseball teams.
Your thoughts on what your Brewers did at the trade deadline.
Speaker 8 (12:39):
I needed more, just from a depth for this standpoint,
like the Willie cashro pick up for you guys was
one that would have would have helped us because I
feel like, mostly because the Brewers are like one injury
on the left side of the infield away from uh,
you know, guys, most people have never heard of other
(13:00):
than me playing, So I wanted a little bit more
from that. I gotta be honest. I didn't really ever
think that, you know, Suarez was coming, given the Mariners pursuit,
and then there wasn't a lot of bats, which is
what which is what the Burers needed.
Speaker 9 (13:18):
You guys kind of fell in the same You guys
kind of fell in the same.
Speaker 8 (13:20):
Boat, like you guys needed a big time arm.
Speaker 9 (13:23):
I don't know that a big time arm even went anywhere.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
No, I mean all all the arms.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
I mean, Jed Hoyer are the GM of the Cubs,
said the asking price for starting pitching at the deadline
was just astronomical and just something they weren't willing to
get to. And yeah, I mean, you guys got Jordan
Montgomery and his albatross of a contract and everything, so
that's an reliever.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (13:42):
I did like that one.
Speaker 8 (13:44):
They just purchased the reliever because he's he's got a
he's got Tommy John So they said, we'll pay a
certain amount of this deal, but you can't, but we're
not going to give a prospect for your your reliever.
And I was like, that's I don't I don't mind that.
I don't mind the idea of just hey, we're just
gonna send you money for a player.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Yeah, yeah, I mean I like that.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
The Cubs added some relief pitching, and they got Soroco
from the Nationals for maybe a starting pitching spot.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
But I would have liked more.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
But apparently the asking price was insane, and if you're
gonna ask for a lot, you would like to get
a lot in return, and there just didn't seem to
be that demand out there. So curious to see what
the Brewers and Cubs do because I think it's gonna
come down to them as far as the NL Central
is concerned.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
So I was glad we didn't get.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
The brooms from you guys out in Milwaukee. But uh,
I still like your team a lot, as much as
it pains me to say that, it does.
Speaker 9 (14:36):
Seem like a two horse race for us. And then
you know, I'm.
Speaker 8 (14:41):
Sure you've noticed this as well, But if they don't
fall off for the Dodgers.
Speaker 9 (14:45):
Don't get super hot or something like that. Right now, it's.
Speaker 8 (14:48):
Shaping up that whoever wins it is the one and
whoever loses is the four, which sets up a potential second,
you know, divisional playoff matchup. But I don't know if
either of us are.
Speaker 9 (14:58):
Ready for that.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
I know my heart can't take it right now, So
we'll hold off the baseball talk for now, but we'll
move to the football field. You might be a little
bleary eyed after last night's practice under the lights for
the Colts. What were your big takeaways from what you
saw out at Westfield last night under the lights?
Speaker 8 (15:14):
Well, I think the biggest one really was that, you know,
I think when the schedule comes out and you see
an eight o'clock practice. As a writer, you're like, I
don't want to be there that late. But this is
also probably something the Colts should have been doing for
a while. I know there's other teams that have you know,
family night, fan night, something like that during the during
(15:35):
the training camp. A lot of times it's a practice
inside their stadium. Grand Park kind of gives the Colts
a little bit of a unique setting because it feels
very high school football ish when the sun goes.
Speaker 9 (15:50):
Down out there.
Speaker 8 (15:51):
They probably should have been doing something like this all along.
Shane Styke and apparently deserves credit for the idea, but
just something that's a little bit different than just the practic.
This the normal practice in the morning and the heat.
They got lucky with the weather.
Speaker 9 (16:05):
The weather was incredible. But then you know, it just.
Speaker 8 (16:08):
It gives a little bit of something to the fans.
It's something for the fan base, you know. And then
from a competitive standpoint, I think the other thing is
those are real scrimmage. We don't see real scrimmages in
the NFL anymore. They'll say scrimmage and you're like, I
don't know what I saw that was different than yesterday.
Last night was a legitimate scrimmage. All they did was
(16:29):
play eleven on eleven offense versus defense. Basically the entire practice,
outside of a couple of special teams where they kicked
field goals for their kicking competition, it was it was
just eleven on like it. It was like a game
without the tackling part because they don't do that anymore.
But I think that's probably something they need to to just,
(16:50):
you know, kind of get out of the run of
positional drills and stuff like that and just play the
way they're gonna have to play next week.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
Joel A.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Erickson of The Indie Star joining and talk some cults. Obviously,
the big thing going on at Colts camp the Colts
quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones. How did
both those guys do last night?
Speaker 8 (17:08):
This was probably the best both of them have looked.
You know, I will say it does come with some context.
The caveat is Jalen Jones Juju Brents both have hamstring injuries.
Javari's Ward was out as a rest day. So the corners,
which have been generally very you know, deep and giving
(17:30):
guys tests with both the first and second team were
pretty thin. Your corners with the second team were Alex
Johnson and Jonathan Edwards, and I think the quarterbacks probably
took a little bit of advantage of that, but you know,
it still was a really good session for both of them.
They pushed the ball down the field, Richardson more so
(17:50):
than Jones. They both had high completion percentages. The numbers
are getting fuzzy on me now because it was late
last night, but I think Jones was twenty one of
twenty seven and I think I had Richardson fourteen of nineteen.
They boosted their completion percentage just quite a bit. They
just looked a lot more in rhythm. It looked a
(18:12):
lot more like what we're gonna see in terms of
quarterbacks moving and kind of flicking the ball out to
receivers and stuff like that. This was probably their best day.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
The eye test of Joel Erickson tells you which of
the two has the edge in this competition.
Speaker 8 (18:25):
I think it's Richardson. I thought that Daniel Jones needed
to be just far and away so more efficient than
Richardson from an accuracy standpoint in this camp, to the
point where it was like, you know, maybe a fifteen
percent difference in completion percentage, and right now, like my
(18:48):
unofficial numbers, he does have you know, seven eight percent difference,
but he's just not He doesn't have the explosive play
profile that Richardson does and really doesn't have a history
of pushing the ball down the field outside of a
free play last night where there was a flag and
he took a shot. He really hasn't done it at
camp either, So I think when it comes down to it,
(19:09):
he needed to be way far ahead of him in
terms of an efficiency standpoint.
Speaker 9 (19:13):
We haven't really seen that.
Speaker 8 (19:14):
So for me, a week through camp, I think Richardson
is probably on track to retain his starting job.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
So next Thursday is the preseason opener against the Ravens.
How do you think Shane Stecken's gonna go when it
comes to naming a starting quarterback for that game.
Speaker 8 (19:28):
That's I'm I'm interested to see because they've been They've
tried so hard to make things as even as possible
from terms of a starting standpoint. I wonder if I
wonder if they rotate it. I wonder if they don't
do like first quarter, second quarter, third quarter. I wonder
if it's every other drive because that's been the goal
(19:51):
the whole time has been to try to make.
Speaker 9 (19:53):
It as even as possible.
Speaker 8 (19:54):
I think that to me the most even thing, because
he don't when the Ravens are gonna pull players, it
would be to kind of alternate them throughout the game
like it's you know, I think, like one of those
college two quarterback systems.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
So how much do you think they'll actually play in
the preseason. Obviously they have the joint practices coming up,
but as far as the quarterback competition, I think they
kind of should go against the grain and they should
play Anthony Richardson Daniel Jones deeper in these preseason games
because if it's a true quarterback competition, you need to
start playing these real game, real life scenarios. How do
you see them diving that up?
Speaker 9 (20:27):
Yeah, that's what I think too.
Speaker 8 (20:29):
I think that you should probably have these guys go
into the third quarter, maybe deep into the third quarter. Now,
if you get to the point where you're looking across
the field and you know you're saying to yourself, none
of these guys are going to play for the Ravens
at all this year, that's maybe when.
Speaker 9 (20:45):
You take them out. Because I don't know.
Speaker 8 (20:47):
That I think you get diminishing returns in terms of
what you're learning at that point. But yeah, I think
you leave these guys in as long as you possibly
can because you need the evaluation.
Speaker 9 (20:57):
All right.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
More with Joel A.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Erickson as we're up against the right now, but we'll
get more conversation with him. Got to get into more
some more position battles as far as you know, who's
looking good, who struggled, and then what are some tough
positions when it comes to cut downs, as far as
who might be, you know, on the edge of making
the roster or not.
Speaker 2 (21:13):
I've got some more questions for him. So Joel A.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
Rickson's going to hang in there through the break, so
we'll get to him just in a little bit. But yeah,
I wanted to make sure we had enough time with
Joel to get into more questions I had about the Colts.
So this is Indiana Sports Talk. I'm Mark Dyton with today.
We're also going to talk to Eddie Garrison, colleague of
mine at the fan. He's on the Fever pregame in
postgame shows they got the winner of the Dallas Wings,
(21:37):
so we will talk to him in a little while
as well. Plus Kevin Bowen gonna join us talk more
colts give his thoughts as well. So this is Indiana
Sports Talk. I'm Mark Dyton, Nathaniel Finch is going to
have a scoreboard update shortly, and Ethan Patterson on the
ones and two, so we'll see as shortly we have
a second part of the conversation with Joela a. Erickson
on the other side of this break, we'll see a short.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
And you'll Finch you hear from me every fifteen minutes.
Scoreboard update. Let's start with the big one from tonight,
the Fever in Dallas to play the Wings Page Becker's
the top pick from this year and its advantage Indiana
eighty eight to seventy eight the final. The Fever have
won four straight. The Fever now four games above five
hundred and when you look at the standings, I know
(22:21):
it's still early in the season, but things are really
jumbled up for the top of the w NBA could
be interesting if the Fever can continue to win. They
do so tonight thanks to twenty three points from Kelsey Mitchell,
a double double from both Natasha Howard and Elijah Boston,
fifteen points from Aery McDonald, everybody contributed, as Stephanie White describes,
(22:42):
find in different ways.
Speaker 10 (22:43):
You know, I didn't feel like we played particularly well tonight,
but you know, finding ways to get wins. And that's
going on some scoring bursts. That's being able to rely
on multiple players, getting stops when needed, you know, making
adjustments and continuing to grow.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Now it certainly got a Harry Dalla started the fourth
quarter on a seven to two run, but the Fever responded,
They held on and they win by ten. Major League
Baseball some scores still in action from the Midwest teams.
How about the White Sox in Anaheim. They lead the
Angels two to zero right now, bottom of the third.
We'll keep an eye on that one, of course, as
(23:19):
the show progresses. We are scoreless in San Diego. That
is where Coach Level's Cardinals play tonight. Bottom of the
fourth inning there. We'll keep an eye on that as well.
The scores that are final. The Reds beat the Braves
three to two. That one this afternoon from Great American
Ball Park. Another strong outing from Brady Singer, a good
bounce back. The Cubs win at Wrigular Field one to
zero against the Orioles. The Phillies beat the Tigers five
(23:42):
to four. That final the Guardians three to two. They
beat the Twins.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
Nathaniel Finch, thank you, Nathaniel, appreciate the update and the
Faniel Finch gonna have your scoreboard updates the rest of
the evening. Eddie Garrison going to join us from the
Pacers or the Fever pre and post game shows. He's
going to join us the well he does the Pacers
as well, but he's going to join us talk about
the Fevers win over the Wings in just a little bit.
Are my conversation with Joela Ericson can take place in
just a second, but I want to take a second
to talk about the Indiana Indiana Donor Network. Indiana Sports

(24:53):
on Joela Ericson right now. As he joins me, Joel,
how are you doing, we'll continue the conversation talking about
the Colts.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
Joel A.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
Rickson of the Indianapolis started joining me on Indiana Sports Talk. Joe,
let's switch away from the quarterbacks a little bit here.
You're you've been in every training camp so far, some
practices and everything. Who has showed up in a good
way and who has struggled?
Speaker 2 (25:15):
In your eyes?
Speaker 8 (25:18):
I think one of the players that's kind of showed
up in a good way is maybe maybe not from
a play standpoint, but just from being available as justin Wally,
you know, Jalen Jones at corner his hamstring injury. Shane
Stikeen acknowledged that it was more severe than Juju Brent's
hamstring injury, which if you've been following Steichen, that's that's
(25:40):
a pretty concerning thing. He doesn't usually say much more
about an injury than a little bit. And so Wally
has this today. He's been able to be on the field,
He's made some pass breakups. I don't think it's been
as as eye popping as they described it being in
the spring.
Speaker 9 (25:56):
But for a rookie, you know, he's he's been with
the starters and saying there. I think in terms of
somebody who maybe is it hasn't looked as good Number one.
This isn't this isn't.
Speaker 8 (26:10):
From watching him play. But I'm starting to wonder about
Zaya Franklin Ankle a little bit. He's been out the
whole time. Initially Chris Balid said it would be a
couple of days. It's been more than a week now.
He still isn't playing when he gets back on the
field is interesting to me. That's that's something I have
jotted down. I think the other thing is and this
week has kind of thrown this off a little bit
(26:31):
because he looked really really good this week, but Ady
Mitchell got off to a little bit of a not
a little bit. He got off to a slow start.
There were drops, he wasn't getting as much separation as usual.
Speaker 9 (26:42):
He had some this week, but.
Speaker 8 (26:44):
Again, you know, you have to put in the context
that they've had lesser corners this week due to injury.
So I think he's one that you want to see
more from as we get into these joint practices and
hopefully he gets to go against some of the Ravens
and Packers cornerbacks.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Tyler Warren made a highlight reel catch last night in
practice that was all over the social media's and everything
like that. How's he looked so far? And anybody else
really stand out with them with their play in training camp.
Speaker 8 (27:13):
I think Tyler Warren is going to be what most
people expected.
Speaker 9 (27:19):
He He does a really good job of making contested catches.
Anytime you have, you know, kind of the.
Speaker 8 (27:29):
Difficult anytime you have the difficult catches, you're not going
to make all of them. And I think you can
get to the point where you're assuming that you need
that you need to make with Warren that he should
make all of them, like you're not going to make
all of them. He makes a lot of them. The
one we saw out there, that's the best catch I've
seen in camp in a while. Defensively, Liatu Latu, not
(27:54):
the pads came on, is starting to show up more consistently,
and that's huge for this team. They really need him
to be an impact pass rusher. I think another person
probably standing out to me, maybe not in that that
practice last night, but for the most part is Alec Pierce.
Pierce has been the most consistent receivers so far, not
(28:17):
just on the deep stuf because I hadn't really been
throwing that, but even on the short stuff he's been
He's had the most consistent hands.
Speaker 9 (28:23):
Uh. And then you know Ward and Buying them.
Speaker 8 (28:27):
The two free agents they signed, they've looked like they're
supposed to look. Ward is very very good at corner,
Buying him is all over the field at safety and
can can even played a little bit of nickel and
corner and that kind of thing.
Speaker 9 (28:37):
Those guys I think stand out to me too.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
The toughest position group to cut down right now.
Speaker 9 (28:44):
Would be what that's a great question. Great question.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
The pregnant. Pause scared me for him, and I thought
I lost you there.
Speaker 8 (28:51):
Yeah, no, No, that's a great question because I feel
like there's some clear tears for everybody. Probably, if everybody's hell,
I think it's corner. If everybody's helped me, I think
it's corner. Because you've got some guys that are uh,
you know, like Sam Womack has played, He's had a
(29:12):
lot of flags in camp. He's also made some plays.
He's got the history as a starter. Last season he
was running six there for a little while. Corey Ballentine
is in there. That's a veteran who's played significant snaps
for a good team with the Packers a couple of
years ago, like he was looking at can you keep
six seven corners?
Speaker 9 (29:32):
Now? Injury might change that, you know, if Dalen Jones is.
Speaker 8 (29:35):
Out for a while, if Juju Bred's is out for
a while, that injury might change that and make it
a little bit less. So I think I think a
lot of the other position groups, it feels like it's
pretty pretty easy to see right now. The Coles might
disagree with me, but I think I think the roster
(29:56):
to me seems pretty I'm waiting for some surprises as
we get into the preseason games.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
All right, Joe, I'm going to get you out on
this one review the Drone Show and fireworks show from
last night.
Speaker 8 (30:09):
So I didn't see part of it because we were
doing our stand up, but it was going on behind us,
which was kind of awesome for me.
Speaker 2 (30:15):
That was a cool visual. You and Nate Atkins, your
partner out there. That was a cool visual. I'm gonna
be quite honest, that was a really.
Speaker 9 (30:22):
Neat idea I was.
Speaker 8 (30:25):
I wore a black shirt, which I think probably helped
because everything's going on behind it. But I just think,
like going back to where we started, this really good,
Like the drone light whatever that was. You don't see
stuff like that very often. The fireworks show was really long,
it was a legitimate fireworks show. I just think that
(30:47):
that's probably the kind of thing that Colts can do
a little bit more out there. You know, part of
part of sports is playing to your fans and catering
to your fans. I think they can do a better
they over the last couple years, they could have done
a better job out there. Last night was one of
those things that was really good.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
Yeah, it seems like it was a Shane Steichen like
production and idea, and they kind of took it and
ran with it, and it seems like it's getting glowing
reviews and hopefully turns into an annual thing.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (31:15):
Absolutely, Like you know, I know, like family Night with
the Packers. I'm from Wisconsin' that's what pops into my head.
Has been a tradition for decades. Like the Colts need
something like that. You need something that's like, you know what,
if you're gonna take your kids up to a practice,
this is the one you should go to and then.
Speaker 9 (31:31):
Just work off of that.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Joel, appreciate the time. Thank you so much for hopping
on with us, and we can find your work at
the Indie Star and also at Joel a. Ericsson on Twitter.
Anything else you want to plug before you get out
of here?
Speaker 9 (31:42):
Uh no, I think you got it all right.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Well, I don't like your team that you root for
in baseball, but I appreciate and love all the work
you do for the Colts.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
So thank you, my friend.
Speaker 9 (31:51):
Sounds good, sounds good.
Speaker 8 (31:52):
I reciprocate your feelings just for the couns.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
I understand totally. Joel A.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
Erickson, thank you stupid Brewers. Want again to sixteen to nine.
They demolished the Nationals. So every time the Cubs win,
I feel like the Brewers win too, so we can
never get a leg up on them.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
So joy Erickson.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
He's a great guy, great reporter, so make sure you
check out his work at the Indie Star. He's always
got all your insight there. Kevin Bowen come up in
a little bit. Eddie Garrison gonna join us on the
other side of a scoreboard update to talk about the
Fevers win over the Dallas Wings. Want to pick his brain.
They also made a move for a season long contract
for somebody. We'll get into that, and does he have
a timeline for Caitlin Clark's return. There's plenty more to
(32:30):
get into with that. Also, going to hear the updates
as far as what happened with Fort Wayne, South Bend
and the Indianapolis Indians to day. Hopefully here from Brendan King,
Howard Kellman, Mike Moss later today. So plenty more to
get into on Indiana Sports Talk. Thank you for joining
me on this Friday night. Appreciate you tuning in. Nathaniel
Finch has a scoreboard update on the other side, and
we've also got Ethan Patterson on the Ones and tunes
(32:52):
plenty more to talk about Colts, Pacers, Fever, and a
whole lot more. You're listening to Indiana Sports Talk on
the network affiliates. Thank you for joining us. I'm Mark dcton.
We'll see you on just the other side. With a
scoreboard update from Nathaniel Finch.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Hey, Nathaniel Finch, your network Indiana scoreboard up date. The
Indiana Fever tonight victorious for the fourth straight time. They
defeat the Dallas Swings in Dallas eighty eight to seventy
eight that final sixteen and twelve. The Fever now four
games about five hundred for the first time since twenty
and fifteen, yes, ten years ago. How impressive is that
(33:28):
Kelsey Mitchell led the team with twenty three points. Though
the Fever found a little slippage in the fourth quarter,
kind of held on to win late.
Speaker 11 (33:36):
We've made too many jumps as a team and as
a group, you know, to not close out certain situation.
Were supposed to ass off to Dallas. But I think
for us, we'll get a chance to really put us
as a posician to you know, win games. We gotta
win them any competitor knows that we say one of
them win them, and I think it took some time
off a little We got a will drop off today
(33:56):
and I think it was inconsistent. I think we could
have been a little bit better.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
To ten point win for the fever.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Taking a look at some Major League Baseball scores the
two games from the Midwest currently in action. We've got
the White Sox adding another tally, three to zero leading
the Angels right now in LA.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
That's the bottom of the fourth.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
The Cardinals strike first, bottom of the fifth there and
that's in San Diego, and coach Lovel's Saint Louis Tema
had one to zero. Update you on both of those
as we go, also live, although Yike's caught stealing, so
this in Iowa it is Triple A baseball. The Indianapolis
Indians tied with the Iowa Cubs after both teams put
(34:37):
up two in the eighth inning. Here it is top
of the ninth, now middle of the ninth, five to five.
We could be seeing extras or we might see an
Iowa Cubs walk off. I'll update you there and throughout
the show. Nathaniel Finch Network, Indiana.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
Thanking Faniel the scoreboard update. Another one coming up at
the top of the hour boat. Now let's switch gears.
Eddie Garrison he works as a fan with me. He
is the producer of Query in Company, the midday show
on ninety three five and one oh seven five The Fan.
He's also the pre and postgame host of the Indiana
Fever and they are coming off a big win. They're
fourth straight against Dallas Wings, an eighty eight seventy eight win.
(35:21):
Eddie joins me. Now, Eddie, how you doing, sir? You're
making the commute back home, I assume from the radio station.
Speaker 12 (35:27):
I am, and I'm just hoping I don't run out
of gas. I went to one gas station and all
the pumps for down and only cash. So right now
we're just hoping.
Speaker 13 (35:36):
To make it home.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
Oh god, I did that earlier.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
Actually, the fuel light came on from the State Fair
and we had to get my daughters from school.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
Fuel light was on.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
I feel like we pulled into Costco on fumes. We
made it, but yeah, good luck, sir. Well you're on
the phone with us. If you have any issues, you know,
we can call Triple A for you or something like
that and make sure you're taken care of. But let's
get into the fever before you run out of gas.
Are they are cooking with gas right now? Despite no
Caitlin Clark Kelsey Mitchell with twenty three points, she continues
(36:03):
to show up and show out on a nightly basis.
I feel like for the fever, I'll talk about a
little bit what Kelsey Mitchell has done in the absence
of Kitlyn Clark.
Speaker 13 (36:10):
I don't even think she's really done anything different. I
just feel like they're moving the ball a lot more
and it's popping a little bit more without Caitlyn Clark.
Just because of the nature of basketball. They want to
play without her right now, just because they don't have
the attention that she'll you know that she gets on
the offensive side, So they have to do things differently
and it's resulting in a lot of opportunities for Kelsey
(36:32):
Mitchell and backdoor cuts and to.
Speaker 12 (36:34):
Play off of but Leah Boston a little bit more.
And she's been a really good player at the w
for her the majority of not the entirety of her career.
Speaker 14 (36:41):
But she has just been super efficient. I know she
wasn't as efficient as she was last month tonight, but
she finds ways every single night to get somewhere near
twenty points, whether that's getting to the line or you know,
getting too the basket for some jump shots.
Speaker 12 (36:56):
That falling tonight, all around the game for Kelsey.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
As you mentioned, can they Eddie the Fever announced they've
signed Chloe Bibby to a contract for the remainder of
the season. Can you talk a little bit about her contributions,
because she obviously made quite the impression for the Fever,
they're signing her through the season.
Speaker 12 (37:11):
Yeah, I think this addition is actually something that's going
to be really really beneficial to the Fever, especially when
Caitlyn Clark comes because so far through the two games
that we see three games from Chloe Bibby, she's primarily
been a three point shooter and right now, at least
going into the game today, likes the whole shot has
(37:34):
kind of fallen off a little bit. She struggled with
the free ball. Sophie Cunningham's the only real other three
point shooter, and without Kayling Clark didn't even to have
players that have the ability to face the floor. And
you know, she's adequate defensively to where you can switch
on the defensive end and then the WNBA that's pretty
much what they want to do as much as they
can to switch kind of like in the NBA, and
(37:55):
tonight she hits two threes and six minutes and just
imagine Mark when he's on the floor and they did
a little bit of this tonight. There's a two man
game between her and Kelsey Mitchell, and Dallas had to
make the decision, are you wanting to take away the
drive of Kelsey Mitchell Troy Devaskia or are you wanting
to take away the top from Chloe Bibbi ack three pointers?
(38:15):
They had trouble defending that tonight, and especially when Kaylyn
Clark comes back enough they try to run that action,
it's only going to be much more challenging for opponents.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Three games left on this road trip to the Fever
at Seattle on Sunday, Tuesday at Los Angeles, Thursday at Phoenix.
They return home on Saturday, August ninth to take on
the Chicago Sky. Do you think that's when we see
a Caitlin Clark return.
Speaker 15 (38:39):
I don't know, but my guess my cleaning is towards no,
because I don't know how much practice time Kaylin Clark
is going to be able to get between now and then.
Speaker 13 (38:51):
Stephanie White on Quaren Company earlier.
Speaker 12 (38:53):
This week on the Flagship ninety three five and want
to sover fide the fans said that they're going to
see multiple practices from Kaylyn class before she returns to action,
and between now and.
Speaker 13 (39:03):
That home game against the skydgless guy, they're pretty much
playing every other day.
Speaker 14 (39:07):
The only other time that the next time they really
have a gap is they play on August seventeen, and
then they have four days off after that they play
on this twenty second. So my assumption in that twenty
second games at home against the Minnesota Links, that would
be my assumption as the way Kaylor Clark is coming back,
just based off of what Stephanie White has told us.
Speaker 2 (39:25):
All right, Eddie, we'll let you out of here.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
Hopefully you get home with the gas to get some
gasoline in your car, and then you'll be in this
chair tomorrow night where I'm sitting right now. So Eddie,
appreciate the time, man, have a great rest of the
night and get home safe.
Speaker 12 (39:38):
Thanks you too, man, have a great rest of your weekends.
Speaker 9 (39:40):
All right.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
That's Eddie Garrison. He'll be in this chair tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
Coming up next, another scoreboard update from Nathaniel Finch's on
the way at the top of the hour. We've got
one more segments ago Kevin Bowen. Still coming up in
the eleven o'clock hour. It's Indiana Sports Talk. Indiana Sports Talk,
Mark Dyke and your host for the evening. Thank you
for joining me wherever you may be on this Friday
evening in the Hoosier State. Hope we're having a fantastic
Friday night. I spent my day out at the Indiana
(40:03):
State Fair. Got plenty of good food and good drinks
out there. If you might be thinking about going there,
I highly recommended two thumbs a way up for me.
Try the sun King Cotton Candy beer out there. Try
the butterfinger covered elephant ear and funnel cake because those
are outstanding. Ethan is already excited about the bacon pickle
ranch pizza that I said I had out there. That
(40:25):
is also very good. I'm trying to think of some
of the other crazy concoctions. There's like, there's a cotton
candy martini that has that. There's a Boba drink. I
don't know if you guys are familiar with the Boba Bubbles.
There's one that has sour candy around the rim that
is interesting as well, so that's an interesting drink. Obviously,
the lobster mac and cheese exquisite outstanding. So if you're
(40:46):
right out the Indiana State Fair, highly recommended.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
There's obviously rides.
Speaker 1 (40:49):
Galore, plenty of local institutions to hang out with, and
the Vinyl revival at the at the Harvest Pavilion worth
your time as well, especially of your huge music fan.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Plenty to do out there.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
Eddie Garrison just join us, hopefully he made it home
while he's on fumes in the gas tank. I did
that earlier leaving the State Fair to get my daughters
from school, and I was sweating bullets a little bit.
It got a little cut and dry out there. So
Kevin Boone, my colleague at the fan, gonna join us
in about thirty minutes. Here we're gonna talk some more
colts there. Fever got the big win over the Dallas Wings,
(41:24):
so that was good to see four in a row
for them, and then hopefully gonna hear from Brendan King
as the South Bend Cubs fell to Quad Cities five
to three out in Fort Wayne, Mike Moss hopefully going
to join us Great Lakes all over the ten Caps
night nine to two, and the Indianapolis Indians. Nathaniel has
had the update all day there now in the tenth
inning nodded at five apiece against the Iowa Cubs out
there in Des Moines.
Speaker 2 (41:44):
So curious to see how that works.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
I would love to talk to all three of those
men later today to get their thoughts, especially post MLB
trade deadline, about what exactly the rosters look like. Belive
Fort Wayne got rid of what I think their top prospect,
so Mike Moss had been all over that at the
trade deadline. You're us to see how all those teams
shape out. Now that the trade deadline has come and gone.
Cubs did a couple moves I was okay with it.
Would have liked a little bit more. Heard rumors of
(42:08):
Mackenzie Gore from the Nationals possibly coming, but instead they
got Mike Soroka and a couple of relievers, which is fine.
We got Willie Castro from the Minnesota Twins as utility man,
so it did some work. But apparently the market out
there for starting pitching was crazy, so the.
Speaker 2 (42:23):
Padres made a lot of moves.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
The ald Orioles and the Twins, I feel like offloaded
half their rosters yesterday, and then Carlos Korea goes from
the Twins back to the Astros.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
So that was the big move of the day.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
Curious to see how everything shakes out in MLB's second half.
Plenty more to get to, including a scoreboard update from
Nathaniel Fitch at the top of the hour, So we
got plenty more to get into. Plus again more Colts
talk as well. Where's Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones' were
six days out from the preseason noper against the Baltimore Ravens. Also,
did you happen to watch the Hall of Fame game
(42:55):
last night? I still can't believe my kids are back
in school and we had an NFL game in July.
Believe that that happened, but it did. So we had
the Chargers take on the Lions. Kevin Bowen told me
earlier this week that that is not real football, and
I said, you tried telling Jim Harbaugh and Dan Campbell
that the preseason opener at the Hall of Fame game
is not real football. They probably they would definitely take
his knee caps out as well, so Kevin Bowen going
(43:18):
to join us shortly and Nathaniel Finch has a scoreboard updates.
On the other side, this is Indiana Sports Talk. I
am Mark Dychton Ethan Patterson on the ones and twos
