Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good inning everyone, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
Talk and Bob Lovell. We're glad you're with us to
start season number thirty two. It's brought to you by
Indiana Donor Network. Coming up, we're going to talk about
the Colts in their matchup last night. Also talking to
Notre Dame Football right now though, it's time for the
star of our show. It's Network Indiana's Eddie Garrison.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Thank you, coach. A pleasure to be along the ride
with you tonight, as well as our outstanding producer Landon
Coons and Keddan Coleford and training in the studio with
Landon tonight. NFL Action underway preseason football. The Indianapolis Colts
played last night against the Baltimore Ravens. Anthony Richardson exited
in the first quarter with a apparent injury. At the time,
(00:45):
it was unknown. Now we know it was a dislocated finger.
Anthony Richardson still met with the media following the game
and explained what it was like looking down at that
pinky finger.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, I was weird.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
He hit me and then I was going to make
sure I had the ball and down I'd see my
finger different in direction. I'm like, maybe on tripping, and
I looked at it again and it was definitely like that.
So it's like, I gotta get this thing pop back
in place. But I'm good though.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
The Indianapolis Colts will now come home for their lone
home a preseason game at Lucas Oil Stadium that will
be a week from tomorrow night against the green Bay Packers.
They will have joint practices with a joint practice I
should say with green Bay on Thursday. But in that
preseason opener yesterday where the Colts lost twenty four to
sixteen to Baltimore, Daniel Jones ten for twenty one, one
(01:32):
hundred and forty four yards passing. He was sacked one time.
Shane Steiken, how would you evaluate his performance?
Speaker 1 (01:38):
I thought he did some really good things.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
Obviously, I had a nice touchdown pass that got called back,
but made some good scrambled plays, had some good throws,
you know, had some chunk plays.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:48):
Warren showed up for him big time in the past game.
I thought he did some really good things.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Hey mentioned Tyler Warren, the rookie out of Penn State
for the Indianapolis Colts. He played the first three series,
all twenty snaps. He had three targets, three catches for
forty yards.
Speaker 6 (02:02):
I thought that was good, you know, to be out
there and do it live, you know, in a real
NFL you know, game setting. And I thought we were
flowing pretty well on offense. And yeah, I think it
was a good start. Still stuff to learn and grow from,
but it was good.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
The Colts will get back on the practice field tomorrow
afternoon at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield. Practice
will start at four o'clock and run just past five o'clock.
They'll be back on the field Sunday and Monday as well,
both of those practices starting at four o'clock and running
until at least five point thirty. And the final training
camp practice will be the joint practice with the Packers
(02:35):
on Thursday, August fourteenth, from three o'clock to five o'clock.
You can get all the training camp information by going
to Colts dot com slash camp Major League Baseball time.
They're at the top of the eighth inning in Chicago
and the Windy City. Nine to five is the score.
So a bit of a comeback now for the White
Sox against the Cleveland Guardians. They hung up three runs
(02:56):
in the sixth inning and tacked on another in the seventh.
Coltson Montgomery, of course, the Hoosier. He's got one hit
on the night, raising his average to two forty on
the season. He walked earlier in the game, and he
did come around to score in that three run sixth inning.
For Cleveland or for Chicago, I should say. As for
the Guardians, they scored five runs in the first inning,
(03:16):
one in the third, and three in the fourth. We've
had some runs scored out in Saint Louis between the
Cubs and the Cardinals, but unfortunately, if you're a Cups fan,
not on your side of the scoreboard. Three to nine
thing is the score right now. Saint Louis on top
of Chicago. Two runs played in the bottom of the
fifth for the Red Birds. Matthew Boyd's night is done.
(03:39):
Five innings, seven hits, three earned runs, three strikeouts. For
the Cubbies. They're sixty six and forty eight. Saint Louis,
they are dead even on five hundred and fifty eight
and fifty eight. Kyle Tucker has won four to three
for Chicago. He has now gone fifty two consecutive at
bats without a home run, the longest in his major
(04:00):
league career, going final. Just before the start of the
show at nine thirty, the Cincinnati Reds fell to the
Pittsburgh Pirates three to two. Cincinnati has lost both games
in the series. Two runs scored in the bottom of
the eighth on a triple from Brian Reynolds off of
Tony Santion gave Pittsburgh their fifty first win of the season.
Cincinnati has lost three consecutive. They are sixty and fifty
(04:21):
seven and going finals. Since the last update, the Detroit
Tigers complete the comeback against the Los Angeles Angels six
to five, Matt Bierling with the game winning three run
homer in the bottom of the eighth. For Network Indiana Sports,
I'm Middi Garrison.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Welcome back. This is Indiana Sports. Aw glad you could
join US Minor League baseball. Before we talk some colts
football with Matt Taylor, we're gonna talk with Howard Killman
talking about the Indianapolis Indians. They lose tonight to Omaha
two to one, the final in this one, Howard, thanks
so much for the call. I hope you're well. Aside
from the fact that the Indians did not win tonight.
Speaker 7 (04:57):
Well, Bob, the Indians were trailing two nothing going to
the bottom of the eighth. They got a three to
two borderline pitch called ball four.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
They got a hit.
Speaker 7 (05:07):
Infield, hit first and second, and Nick Solac single the
center to score a run.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
And put the other man a third.
Speaker 7 (05:14):
So you got a run in You're down two to one,
you got first in third, nobody out, but a pop up,
a pop up, an infield out and they do not
score and they went down in order in the ninth.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Tough loss.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Yeah, Well, you and I've talked for years about timely hitting,
a good pitching, and nothing more appropriate than that in
terms of you've you've got a great opportunity to push
across some runs and can't deliver.
Speaker 7 (05:43):
Well, that's exactly right now. This Indians team is having
a sensational season.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
There are more than twenty.
Speaker 7 (05:49):
Games there more than twenty games above five hundred. They
come into this series with all the momentum in the world,
playing great ball, having won three straight games in Iowa,
and they're playing in an Omaha team that is more
than twenty games below five hundred, having all kinds of problems.
(06:10):
So what happens Omaha has won three of the first
four games in this series. That's baseball.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
That's exactly what it is. What's happening tomorrow, Well.
Speaker 7 (06:23):
Tomorrow we have it's a circus weekend at the ballparker
six thirty five game tomorrow, then a one thirty five
games Sunday. Kids eat free every Sunday at Victory Field.
And after this weekend we will only have two home
stands left.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Better get out to the ballpark. You're running out of
time to buy Howard's incredibly well written book sixty one
Humors Inspiring Lessons I learned from baseball and to watch
one of the best baseball teams around. Howard, thanks so
much for the call. We'll talk to you tomorrow night, Bob.
Speaker 7 (06:54):
Great to have you back as always, Thank you very.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Much, Thanks very much. Colts last night preseason game number
one with me the man who has the call, the
voice of the Indianapolis Colts, Matt Taylor. Coats loose sixteen
to fourteen. Matt, thanks so much to the call. Disappointing
(07:17):
night last night on many fronts, I think, not the
least of which an injury to Anthony Richardson. But it
was a tough tough night out in Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 8 (07:26):
I mean it didn't start or finished the way the
Colts had scripted, specifically with the quarterback playing time. The
Colts wanted to see what Anthony Richardson could do for
about a quarter and a half, and he got seven
snaps last night. He was in to about a second
or third play of the second series and then took
(07:48):
a smash off of the left edge. A defensive end
came in unblocked and located his pinky. And so it's
listen when you're talking about a guy with Anthony Richardson
with the context of he's missed seventeen games in his
two years so far in the NFL due to injury,
with four separate injuries. The last thing he needed when
(08:08):
he's trying to prove that he can be a franchise
quarterback for the Colts is another injury. But it doesn't
it doesn't sound like it's all that severe, right, easier
for me to say, but I think he can play
through it and we'll see how soon he can get
back on the practice field. They do practice tomorrow, Sunday
and Monday up at training camp, so you know he's
(08:29):
in the thick of that competition with Daniel Jones. Daniel.
Daniel had to come in, by the way, in the
middle of that drive and play the rest of the
half for the Colts, so he got a lot more
playing time last night than anyone had anticipated. So the
Colts kind of off script, if you will, in terms
of their quarterback competition and the playing time they want
(08:50):
to see these guys get in the preseason. So you know,
Daniel was scheduled to play about a quarter and a
half this upcoming Saturday, a week from tomorrow against the Packers.
Kind of flip flopped the same script that we were
supposed to see last night from Anthony. So now I'm
just eager to see and interested to see if the
Colts will you adjust accordingly, if Anthony can play and
(09:15):
can throw at that dislocated finger coming up next Saturday,
given the fact that Daniel got a lot more run
last night, right than anybody thought, So certainly not ideal,
but it could have been way worse than anybody thought
based on the ferocity of the head that Anthony Richardson
took on that stack.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
What concerns me most of all is his mental state.
Here's a young guy thinks have not gone like he wanted,
like he expected, and he's got to just be as
low as a guy can be right now.
Speaker 8 (09:47):
Yeah, absolutely, And again you just feel like every time
Anthony Richardson starts taking a couple of steps forward, here
comes something else to kind of like rock him off
the track a little bit. You know, because he had
been doing everything that the cults wanted him to do,
both on the field and off the field. In the
off season. He was incredibly intentional about all the different
(10:10):
things that go into becoming a franchise player back in
the NFL, and you know that's time on task and
you know, being there for your teammates, being the leader
all of those things and working out with personal throwing code.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Hey so hey, Matt, Yeah yeah, I hate all right,
Well we need to take a short break. We'll come
back with Matt Taylor.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
With this Indiana Sports Talk Scoreboard updates him Mattie Garrison.

Alex Pelow was second quickest, Felix rosen Quist third, Graham
(11:15):
ree Haul fourth, Joseph newgart In fifth, and David Malucas
was sixth quickest. And this is how the rest of
the weekend looked for the NTT Indiecar Series. They'll have
practice tomorrow at noon. You can watch all of this
on Fox Sports one. The qualifications we will be at
two thirty. The race will be on Sunday at three
(11:35):
o'clock and that will be televised on Fox. The Indiana
Fever did not play today, but a couple of a
newsworthy items were announced by the team. Point Guard Aery
McDonald and Sidney Colson will be out for the rest
of the season. Both of those players got injured in
last night's game for the Indiana Fever. And they're launch
(11:56):
to the Phoenix Mercury. McDonald will miss the rest of
the season after breaking a owned in her right foot
at Sidney. Coulson will be out quite a bit of
time she tore her left acl The Indiana Fever are
in action tomorrow night at eight o'clock against the Chicago
Sky and are looking to go four to h on
the season. For Network Indiana Sports, I'm at a Garrison.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
Come back everyone. Matt Taylor rejoined us the Pride of
Ron Kyle High School and Franklin College and he is
the voice of the Indianapolis Colts. Colts in Baltimore last
night sixteen fourteen preseason game number one, we all understand
what's going on, and Matt obviously offense under the circumstances
(12:43):
kind of sputters. Well, were your overall thoughts and how
they played? Things they did well, things you think need
to be cleaned up. I know it's early on a
lot of it needs to be cleaned up, But what
were your thoughts specifically last night?
Speaker 8 (12:55):
Yeah? I thought when Daniel Jones came in he was
pretty crisp and I was really impressed.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
I mean, he knew where.
Speaker 8 (13:01):
To go with the football. He was accurate. He led
what I'm calling a touchdown drive. It got wiped off
due to a bad penalty, but he still got the
Colts into a scoring threat that should have ended in
a touchdown. I mean, his stat line is not going
to show it, but I thought he was pretty good
last night. He had some he had a couple of
drops by some skilled players that didn't help things in
(13:21):
terms of the statistics. But I thought I could go
back and watch the game field he actually looked pretty good.
And again I give him a lot of credit because
he came in and was thrust it into playing time,
not knowing he was going to get it, expecting not
to get it. Because the plan for Anthony Richardson last night,
you know, defensively, you know, the Ravens didn't really show
(13:43):
a whole lot, you know, the preseason. For those that
don't know, it's basically it's like the equivalent of getting
a vanilla ice cream at Dairy Queen, you know what
I mean. Like there's no hot buds, sprinkles. You know,
you're not You're not getting a blizzard. It's basically, you know,
it's vanilla froyo, you know what I mean. So the
(14:05):
Ravens kept it pretty vanilla and the Colts basically just
played straight up defense. But you know, within that there
were some individual guys that shine on both sides of
the ball, you know, offensively and Ni Mitchell had a
nice night. Tyler Warren had a really good night. He
played in the first half and I only played about
twenty plus snaps, but he had three targets, three catches,
(14:27):
forty yards. He had a twenty three yard catch and run.
So that's great to see what you're gonna get out
of him as a rookie, big impactful guy in the
intermediate part of the passing game at a Penn State
from that.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Tight end position.
Speaker 8 (14:40):
Defensively, guy named Alex Johnson playing cornerbacks. The Colts are
really kind of depleted right now from an injury standpoint
at corner Juju Brnt has banged up, Jalen Jones is
banged up, and probably the most unfortunate part of that equation,
Justin Wally is out for the season. Tore his ACL on.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
A joint practice this week against the Ravens.
Speaker 8 (15:01):
That's really disappointing. The Colts were really high on him.
But at any rate, the depths being tested and Alex
Johnson stepped up. He's a second year cornerback at a UCLA.
Had an interception last night. He had a pass breakup
last night. Joe Bacchi, a backup linebacker who the Colts
picked up in free agency coming over from the Bengals,
knows the lou An Arumo defense pretty well. He had
(15:23):
an interception last night. So there were a lot of flashes,
a lot of good individual performances, but overall a lot
of stuff to clean up. Drops on offense, yeah, backling
issues on defense. Had nine penalties last night, so a
lot of guys are, you know, playing with different guys
that they don't normally you know, spar with if you
will in training camp. And then on special teams, the
(15:45):
Colts gave up too many big returns. They gave up
over two hundred yards of returns last night between kickoffs
and punts. They allowed an eighty seven yard punt return
for a touchdown last night. So again it's you know,
you're just seeing what you have personnel, seeing what works
in terms of the special teams. But schematically that's got
to get cleaned up, and hopefully it will in this
(16:07):
joint practice coming up this week. With the Packers and
then you play Green Bay on Saturday too.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
Well, listen, it's still early, I understand, but you know
that doesn't do much for Colts fans to talk about
Daniel Jones. Look, he's he is a very capable player.
I think that's a way to describe him. He had
a fair measure of success in New York. Having to
deal with that pressure cooker, I think gets you ready
(16:35):
for just about any experience. And so you know, the
move to get him and bring him in clearly as
one I think was a good move. We're all hopeful
that Anthony Richardson is able to be Anthony Richardson and
live up to those expectations. But yeah, it's still a
situation where there's a lot to go, a lot of
(16:56):
time left. That time is going to shorten up quite frankly.
But this is a team that's still very, very capable
of having a tremendous year.
Speaker 8 (17:05):
Absolutely, and it's got a good roster, it's got a
good nucleus, and so you know, it's not all about
quarterback play. But listen, I mean, we all know ball.
We understand, Yeah, quarterback play in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
It's pretty important, right, you know.
Speaker 8 (17:19):
It's the most important position in Colts or in sports,
I should say. And here's one fascinating stat that I
just always harken back to when I talk about the
Colts in the offseason. This is crazy to me, Bob,
but it very much accentuates your point. You know, Anthony
Richardson last year, you know, completed less than half of
(17:40):
his passes. Right, He completed forty seven percent of his
passes last year, and he is the first quarterback in
the NFL since twenty and eleven to complete less than
half of his passes but win more than half of
his starts.
Speaker 9 (17:55):
Right.
Speaker 8 (17:56):
So, to me, that tells me that the roster around him,
even though he's had an up and down, you know,
career so far, and last year obviously was disappointing personally
for him, but it tells me that the roster around
him is just too good to bottom out. They're in
every game, right. They played thirteen games last year decided
by one score. The roster around this guy, and whoever
(18:20):
plays quarterback for the Colts is just too good. They're
they're there to uplift that potion, right, and they're just
trying to get more consistency from that position. And if
they do, Bob, I think they really got something because
the AFC South is it's it's not a gauntlet, right,
It's very winnable. The Texans are there for the taking.
But again, if you boil it down to a couple
(18:41):
things from last year, consistency at quarterback and then defensively,
you know that scheme. That side of the ball is
completely overhauled with a new coaching staff and again a
new scheme. If you can get more pressure on the quarterback,
you get a little bit more games specific you take
away the other team's top players, then I think you
really have some thing. But obviously that is way easier
(19:02):
said than done.
Speaker 1 (19:03):
Matt Taylor with us talking about the Colts, All right,
review for me again, since I have trouble listening and
paying attention at my advanced age. Back on the practice
field tomorrow.
Speaker 8 (19:15):
Back on the practice field tomorrow. So yeah, you only
believe it or not. You only have one more week essentially, yeah,
to come watch this team in training camp. It's mainly
going to be over here soon. I mean we started,
I felt like we started earlier this year. I don't
know how the calendar kind of shook out that way,
but bottom line is you've got Tomorrow, Sunday and Monday.
(19:35):
Those are all afternoon practices. All those practices start at
four and then a couple off days on Tuesday Wednesday
of this upcoming week, and then a joint practice with
the Packers on Thursday. That's going to start at three
o'clock on Thursday, and then they're going to play the
Packers on Saturday. And that's basically it for Grand Park.
The experience in Westfield, though, come on up, it's going
(19:57):
to be hot. Take care of yourself. It's still that
opportunity you come watch the Colts. So Colts dot com
slash camp is your place to get all the details,
get your parking, get your tickets, come come hang out
with us.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
So when you say you've got a couple of days off,
do you get a couple of days off?
Speaker 3 (20:14):
Now?
Speaker 8 (20:15):
You know me, I don't take days off. I'm like,
I'm like you, I'm on the Bob level play.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
Well, you know what your family would enjoy seeing you?
You know that I had.
Speaker 8 (20:26):
I just had four days in Baltimore, So it's it's
it's hillaciously good to be home and see the kids.
They start at school this week, so good to be home.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
Oh oh my, well you are. You're living the dream though. Brother.
Let's face it, you're having some fun. Matt Taylor Colts
still in action again, and get out. It's a great,
great deal for you. If you love your Colts, which
I know you do, go up to Grand Park, go
(20:55):
out watch them play. It's up close and personal. Have
some fun. When you see Matt, you know he's he's
okay with signing autographs. He still does that. He hasn't
hasn't gotten past that. He still signs them. So get there,
have some fun, get his autograph, ask him you some
stories about his playing days at Ron Colleen at Franklin College.
(21:18):
He'll be glad to share him with you. So do
all that, Matt. I appreciate you taking time. I know
you've had a long, long, last few days. I appreciate it.
Have a fantastic weekend.
Speaker 8 (21:28):
Well, listen, I always joke at Beat's working, right, at
Beat's having a real job.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
You know you could get paid.
Speaker 8 (21:34):
Yeah, I get paid to talk to you and talk football.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
So life is pretty much yeah, pretty good. I keep
telling you. I know this is season thirty two for me,
and people say, well, you know what, why do you
keep doing it, and I said, well, let me see
if I got this right. I work from my house,
I talk about sports with my friends and they pay me.
Speaker 8 (21:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
So yeah, that's a horrible thing to do, all right, Matt,
I love you. You're the best. Have a great weekend,
you too, Bob, all the best. See you later with.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
The Sandiana Sports Talk scoreboard updates. I'm at a garrison today.
NFL preseason action. Cleveland Browns thirty, Carolina Panthers ten. So
a nice start to the season for the Brownies. Suder
Sanders play most of the game for Cleveland, fourteen of
twenty three, one hundred and thirty eight yards and two
passing touchdowns. A nice debut for mister Sanders, now transitioning
(22:25):
to Major League baseball. They're in the bottom of the
ninth inning in Chicago. The Cleveland Guardians are out away
from picking up their sixtieth win of the season. They're
ahead right now, nine to five, and I got up big.
They were up by as many as eight runs nine
to one. The last four have been scored by the
Chicago White Sox. Ten Or Bybee got the start for
(22:47):
the Guardians. He went five and a third gave up
four runs. He did strike out seven batters. If the
Guardians are able to hold on, it will be his
eighth win of the season. Colson Montgomery in the game
for the Chicago White Sox is at the dish now
looking to keep the game alive. Right now, He's one
for three with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
(23:08):
They're three seven innings in Saint Louis between the Cubs
and the Cardinals. Still a shutout for the Cubs, five
nothing advantage Saint Louis. Chicago does have five hits in
this game, but they just have not been able to
get any runs across the plate just yet. Kyle Tucker
won for three and a half has a pair of
hits as well for Chicago. Pete crow Armstrong oh for
(23:31):
three at the plate. Matthew Boy got the start, went
five innings, gave up three runs and struck out three batters.
As for the Saint Louis Cardinals, Jordan Walker and Alec
Burlson are the primary sources of offense. Walker two for
three with the home run and two RBIs for networking
down to sports, I'm at a garrison.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Welcome back, everybody. This is Indiana Sports Talk. I'm Bob
Lovell and honored to have John Eric from the IU
Sports Network join us. John, thanks so much for the call.
Also award winning journalists for WIBC Radio and Good Guy.
Speaker 9 (24:13):
All Right.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
I you not sneaking up on anybody this year, and
huge expectations for this group. This is gonna be kind
of an exciting you're John, seeing if they can continue
to do the great things they did last year, and
there would be no indication that they can't.
Speaker 10 (24:31):
Yeah, yeah, Bob, You're absolutely right. I mean, one of
the things that was very noticeable from Big Ten media
days late last month was that, you know, head coach
Kurt Signetti still got up there, still had the same confidence.
He was obviously questioned about the schedule because a lot
of the critics last year said that you didn't play
very tough schedule, which is funny to me because I've
(24:54):
had to watch I you play Penn State, Michigan and
Ohio State right schedule until the Big Ten did away
with divisions and the schedule finally evened out. So I
laughed at that all last season, and it's going to
be the case again this year because the schedule is
slightly tougher but there's no Ohio State on the schedule
this year, and there's no Michigan on the schedule this year,
(25:16):
so I'm sure SEC people and other critics will say
something about that. But again in Indiana's in a conference
with eighteen teams, so you're playing nine conference games, right
The thing that really I think is going to be
interesting to see is how much depth they have because
on paper and again where it's on the.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
State, and the season doesn't start un.
Speaker 10 (25:38):
Till August thirtieth, So what we have to go on
right now is potential and the way the roster looks now.
The results are obviously what we're going to be looking
at later on, but the potential is certainly there for
this team to have another really good season, I think,
and I think a lot of that starts with Fernando
Mendoza that them bringing him over from He was named
(26:02):
to the Davy O'Brien watch list for that trophy, which
goes to the best college quarterback in the nation every year.
There is an outside chance that if he plays well enough,
ESPN projected earlier this summer that he could be the
number one pick.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
In the draft. Wow he played.
Speaker 10 (26:18):
If he plays well enough to be that high or
it goes in the first round of the draft. Indiana
is going to be playing very good football in the
College Football Playoff again. And they lost some pieces, but
they've also got a lot of their cornerstone guys back.
And of course I would argue the right man leading
them in Kurt Signetti.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
I don't think there's any argument there, John. I mean, listen,
when you know this, you use your involvement in sports
as a longtime broadcaster and very good at what you
do football, especially if you have the right if you
have the right trigger man, if you have the right quarterback,
which it sounds like they do, and if he can
stay healthy, you clearly know you have the right coach
(26:59):
and coaching staff and system. And so it's a proven system.
You just plug people in and let them do what
they do within the confines of the system and look
at the success that system has had all these years
at different places. And so I'm like you, I'd be
very optimistic about this group.
Speaker 10 (27:18):
Yeah, there's a lot to like. The offensive line looks solid.
They got a couple of transfer portal guys, one from
Ohio State one from Notre Dame who are both well
over three hundred pounds who are going to be a
big part of the run blocking.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
They're going to be.
Speaker 10 (27:31):
Protecting Fernando Mendoza. You still have Aidan Fisher who is
a standout linebacker, Mikyle Carmara who was a stud on
the defensive line, and then in the secondary, Di'angelo Pons
who made a lot of big plays with deflections and interceptions,
and one of the plays he made that I'll always
remember from last season that interception returned for a touchdown
(27:52):
against Washington. So they've They've got a lot of really
good pieces back, a favorable start to the to the
season and scheduling wise, and even when they have to
play at Iowa, they have two they have a week
off in between the road game at Iowa and then
what might be their toughest road test of the season
(28:12):
October eleventh at Oregon, and then of course the Bucket
game this year is a Friday night game, a Saturday game,
So there's a lot of interesting things about the schedule.
I feel like it's I feel like it's slightly tougher
than last year, but I also feel like this roster
is much better because Signetti has had another has had
(28:35):
a full.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Season and and now.
Speaker 10 (28:37):
On full off season to kind of really go, Okay,
where can we really build this team without just having
to go only get James Madison players. Yeah, he did
get some other players outside of James Madison, but he
he made such an impression last year that it's clearly
it's drawn the attention of everybody, and that's why he's
able to get guys not just from his old stomping grounds,
(28:59):
of from other areas of the country as well.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
To address the scheduling situation, let me tell you what
you know. You are judged as a coach on the
number of games you win, pure and simple, keep your job.
Don't win, you don't keep your job. Win, you may
still keep your job. And so you're playing in the toughest,
if not the toughest, one of the top two difficult
(29:24):
conferences in the country. Conference games are hard to win,
and so I would see no I would personally see
no advantage playing outside of my conference and playing Power
Power five conference teams outside of my conference. Why would
I want to do that. I'm going to get enough
tough games in my conference schedule. Why do I need
(29:44):
to do those ball games? That's my argument.
Speaker 10 (29:47):
Yeah, that's Bob, You're exactly right. And that's what I've
been saying too. It's like, what is the upside? I mean,
there is those people that were criticizing the people that
were criticizing Indiana from backing out of the virgin Ginia game. Okay,
well what is virgin When was the last time Virginia
did anything really solid? Virginia has been a middle of
(30:08):
the road, you know, football program. And let's say IU
has a tough game against them and they dropped that
game on if there was an injury or something. Well,
now then people say, well, see you look, you lost
to Virginia and now and now it.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Doesn't a very good thing for them.
Speaker 10 (30:24):
So it it literally does them no good to keep
that game on their schedule, especially when they're already playing
nine conference games.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
Right.
Speaker 10 (30:31):
So I love the way Signette defended that at the
Big Ten media days, and.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
I thought his words rang true.
Speaker 10 (30:39):
Of course, he he He's really made Bloomington a fun
place over these over this.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
Last year or so.
Speaker 1 (30:46):
You know what, John, one thing you realize, you recognize
as a coach, you're going to get criticized no matter what.
Uh and and and everybody is smarter than you. You're
going to get criticized. Everybody knows more than you do.
So that's a given. When you decide to go in
the profession, you just you have to deal with it.
It's it becomes easy, quite frankly, uh, when you're at
(31:08):
that level, because you've been criticized forever to get to
where you are. And then the other part of it, too,
I think, is that you know, you're talking about apples
and oranges. You're talking about uh conferences like, uh, you
know the Big Ten where you have what is it?
They play nine conference games, right, yes, and others play eight.
So that's an apples and oranges comparison. There's no point
(31:30):
in having it, quite frankly. So I've been able to
I've been able to vent. Thank god, you let me
vent in a situation. I'm with you. I think it's
exciting and and frankly, there's still the buzz is still
there about this football team and it should be.
Speaker 10 (31:46):
Yeah, it definitely should be. I'm excited to see a
lot of these positions and what these guys are are
able to do. The spring game, like last year, for example,
was pretty fun, but the spring game this year was
even more fun. Because there were more people that attended it.
They wanted to see what this team, get a little
bit of a glimpse into it, because now the feeling
(32:09):
is different. The feeling around the program is that, Okay,
Indiana is a football school.
Speaker 3 (32:14):
Now it is. I mean that's just the way. That's
the perception of it.
Speaker 10 (32:17):
You go eleven and two, you make the college football plap,
and people start to see you as a football school,
and so people from the community are going to come
out and watch what you do, even when it's a
minuscule thing like an appearance somewhere or a spring game
or an exhibition game. They want to find out how
practice is going because they see the success and they
(32:38):
want to be a.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Part of it.
Speaker 1 (32:40):
John Herrick were there some of the IU Sports Network.
John there, it's going to creep up on us before
we know what. We got about a minute here. They're
going to be playing before we know it.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Yes, yes they will.
Speaker 10 (32:52):
Three weeks from tomorrow, Old Dominion should be a great
game where they're going to have the new I think
the mascot's going to come out and the Bison mask.
Scott right, they've been talking about we'll get our first
glimpse of that at the I think that the old
Dominion game. So it's yeah, it's we were wondering last
year what kind of a turnout you'd get AGAINSTYU for
(33:13):
the season opener. But I don't think there's any doubt
that you're gonna have pretty much a sellout or next
to sellout for these home games this year given the success.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
John Herrick from the IU Sports Network, who's yours? Getting
ready for what will be a great season, John, thanks
for doing this. Have a fantastic weekend, all right, Thank
you coaching too, Thank you. Coming up, we're gonna talk
some Notre Dame with Lynn Clark. This is Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 9 (33:40):
What this Network?
Speaker 2 (33:41):

Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Lovel. This is Network Indiana's
Indiana Sports Talk. I love the fall because they get
a chance to talk to Lynn Clark. Doctor Lynn Clark,
Irish one oh one are Notre Dame expert, but he
is a quite the ACAM edition new media. Doctor Clark.
(35:50):
Always great to talk to you. Thanks to the call.
Speaker 11 (35:53):
IB Congratulations on your number thirty two. I know it's
a labor of love when you've done it so much
to promote sports at all levels in Indiana, and for one,
I'm truly grateful for everything that you've done to me
for me throughout the years.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
So I appreciate. I appreciate to Con Worslin, I really do.
And uh, it is the labor love. It's also you know,
it beats having a real job like like you have
and so it's been fun. I certainly want to talk
about the CNY and Sports Academy projects you're involved in,
but tell me about Notre Dame football right now.
Speaker 11 (36:30):
About for the first time in six seasons, we're not
going to be talking about Jack Kaiser, who has taken
his talents to the NFL.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
That doesn't that doesn't seem fair either, Lynn, But eight.
Speaker 11 (36:42):
Indiana Natives, doctor roster, and if you will have a
major impact for the fodding Iris this coming season, retrid
freshman T Johnson out.
Speaker 9 (36:50):
Of four way he has really impressed. He could be
the next breakout start for the secondary drink one out
of and high school is now the leader of that
like that thest and then Ashton Craig, who was they
really to watch us today returns to injury again. Indian
(37:13):
well represented on.
Speaker 1 (37:17):
Doctor Clark. I'm going to ask you to do me
a favor. Hang up. We got a little breakup in
your in your call. Do me a favor hang up
on me, which is okay, call me right back and
let's hope we get a better signal.
Speaker 9 (37:29):
Okay, sound good.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
Perfect, Thank you, Doctor Lynn Clark going to rejoin us
we're going to talk about a little interesting project he's
involved in called the CNN Sports Academy, And uh, it
is interesting, No, no, Jack Kaiser. After talking about Jack
Kaiser and his tremendous run at Pioneer High School and
(37:51):
his similarly tremendous run at Notre Dame, all right, Lynn,
you're back. So yeah, a lot of changes. So let's
talk about the cn N Academy. What is this and
what's the genesis of this project? In reading you know
the email you sent me, it looked to me like
a fantastic project and good for you that you're involved
(38:15):
in it. Bob.
Speaker 11 (38:17):
I spent three months in Ireland where I had a
chance to work on a number of different projects, and
one of the things I was asked to do was
to be an observer of the CNN Academy at uc D,
the University College Dublin. And sorry, I had a chance
to meet the CNN Academy director and he came up
to me and he goes, you know, we'd really like
to do something in sports, And I said, I know people,
(38:40):
Bob Lovell, Malcolm morand and.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
But Malcolm Malcolm you well, I know Malcolm, and I
obviously worked with him on campus. I mean at IU
p U R. There's not a better guy around maybe you,
but Malcolm is first rate. I love him.
Speaker 11 (38:57):
And then Kevin White, the former athletic director at No
In Duke, and I had a chance to meet him
over at Dublin. He was promoting his book and I'm
writing another book, and he said I'd love to contribute
a chapter. And then everything is just falling into place.
And so right now we're in the planning stages. In
the next couple of weeks, we're going to have a
zoom type call to really see if we can bring
(39:18):
this very unique type of training. It's not your traditional
journalism nuts and bolts. This is an immersive experience where
it's really going to be something like I experienced the
Sugar Bowl last year, where you immerse yourself and something
happens where you need to to to put all the
skills that you know, but then are put into a
situation where you need to learn how to react. And
(39:41):
so the goal of this academy is to teach the
next generation of sports media professionals to anticipate and react
when the time is needed. So I'm really looking forward
to working with you and the others.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Well, in thirty two years of doing this show, I
can recount incidents where you had to react and you know,
when you do live radio you need to be prepared.
We're going to take a short break. Lynn, hang with me.
We'll come back and talk more with Lynn Clark on
Indiana Sports Talk. Welcome back. This is Indiana Sports Talk
(40:14):
Year number thirty two. Couldn't make it to thirty two
without guy's like doctor Lynn Clark from Irish one oh
one now involved in the CNN Sports Academy. Lynn, this
sounds like a fun, fun experience. You've been able to
engage in a lot of new media things, a lot
of new projects people around we know around Indiana and
(40:37):
your involvement with Notre Dame and your involvement in radio.
Longtime radio guy. Everybody knows Lynn Clark. But now beyond
the state of Indiana. Now we're going global. You're going
global on me. Lynn.
Speaker 11 (40:50):
Well, I was over in Ireland for three months, didn't
really want to come back, but I really want to
spotlight what we're doing in Indiana, what you do with
the show, what Malcolm is doing with the Sports cap
little journalism program, and then of course Kevin White with
an affinity to the state, being a Saint Joe graduate.
It's just this is something very doable, but hey, let's
make Indiana a part of it, especially because of Indianapolis
(41:13):
being the sports capital of the world. Basically with amateur sports,
it's a chance to cover, you know, any national championship event,
and I think we need to have a who's your
flavor to it when we do this.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
I couldn't agree more. I mean, as clearly we host
and we'll continue to host major events of different kinds.
You know, obviously the Speedway hosting the world's largest single
day sporting event. Multiple final fours on the men's and
women's side are baseball, you know, the Indians tremendous. You
(41:48):
look at the number of high school events hosted in Indiana,
great facilities and wonderful things sports wise, there's a whole
lot going on in our state. But that's just that's
how it is, and everybody's excited about it. But there
are things clearly bigger and more important than sports, if
I'm allowed to say that, driven in the position I'm in,
(42:11):
and so that's what makes this CNN Sports Academy such
an interesting idea.
Speaker 11 (42:16):
Well, they have the academies in Abu Dhabi, Mexico City.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
Dublin, all over the world.
Speaker 11 (42:20):
And so we want to bring it to Indiana and
let that through the showcase for the American version of
the CNN Academy, which might just have an emphasis in sports.
So I'm really excited about it and working with you
and the others on this team to really start the
conversation and we'll see where it goes from there. But
I think the team, the dream team that we've assembled.
I think we can get this up and running very quick.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
Well, you know, aside from me, I mean, you have
some guys who know what's going know what's going on.
I'm just honored to be in the conversation and I'm
happy for you. I think it's a fantastic idea and
you know, I'll do everything I can to help you. Now,
before I let you go, what's going on? You know,
(43:03):
what's the future here? What's going on practice wise on
the football field and when we're in action, and what
do you think about this year's group?
Speaker 11 (43:10):
Well, this has been a great fall camp so far.
Marcus Freeman is looking to build trust while emphasizing a fast,
focused physical approach. And it's the veterans who are really
setting the tone. Everybody is healthy, the younger players are
stepping up, and it's the position battles. Of course, at quarterback,
the battle between CJ. Carr and Kenny Minshee, but then
(43:30):
on the offensive line, you got these guys pushing together
for a starting position and in the secondary. These are
the closely watched competition storylines that are emerging. But twenty
three days from now, they're going to be down in
Miami to open up the season and we'll see how
these players have determined who is going to be the
starting quarterback, because Marcus Freeman says, we're going to leave
(43:52):
it up to the players to make that decision. But
right now it's very deep.
