Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
Talk and Bob Lovell is brought to you by Indiana
Donor Network. Coming up, we're gonna talk about IU football
with Jeffrabjohns from Peaks dot Com. We're also going to
talk a little Notre Dame football, and we'll talk about
the fever. Right now, let's turn it over to the
star of the show. It's Network Indiana's Landon Coons.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Coach Lovell, It is a pleasure to be with you
on this Saturday night in our downtown Indianapolis studios with
our producers Kylon Talley and Caleb Zoover. Let's get right
into it. NFL preseason Week number two, Green Bay Packers
take down to the Indianapolis Colts at Lucasol Stadium, final
score of twenty three to nineteen. All the quarterbacks having
a pretty solid day. Dale Jones seven for eleven one
(00:46):
hundred and one yards, Anthony Richardson went six for eleven
was seventy three yards, and Riley Leonard went seven for
twelve with sixty four yards and Shane Hey Coachhane Sikin
is going to have a tall task decide who is
going to be the starting quarterback?
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Absolutely, Obviously you got a quarterback battle. You got two
first round draft picks, and when they both came in,
you know, I made it very clear that you know,
this is going to be a battle and they're going
to compete for the job. And like I said, I'm
gonna make a decision I feels best for the football team.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
He's gonna make the decision best for the team. Here's
Anthony Richson. I don't know if he's shown enough to
be the starter.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
I really don't know. It really doesn't matter what I think.
At the end of the day, it's really up to them.
I feel like I've been trying to put my best
foot forward, trying to grow each and every step of
the way. I feel like I've been doing a decent job,
you know, and improving. But at the end of the day,
I just want to keep improving and if I do
want a job, you know, thank god. If not, I
(01:40):
need to keep working.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
And Dale Jones on what he has shown to get
the starting job.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
Just try to show up every day and improve, grow
in my understanding of the offense, and make good decisions consistently.
I think that's been something I've I've always tried to
do and we'll continue to work on. But I think
consistent decision making and you know, throwing the ball accurately,
(02:05):
I think that's a huge part of playing the positions.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
You know, that's something I've tried to do.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
DJ Giddens went six carries for twenty eight yards. Ulyss
He's Bentley the fourth seven carries twenty seven yards. Tyler
Goodson ten carries ten yards and scoring the loan touchdown
of the day three yard touchdown run. Here's Matt Taylor
on the Colts Radio Network. Second down in goal for
the Colts at the three. They're quickly right back on
the ball Richardson out of the gun. They give it
the goodsend right up the middle.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Now he's angling through the right rookie for the goal line.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Said touchdown.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Tyler Goodson a run into the ind tone of three
yards and the Colts have the first touchdown of the game,
and now they lead the Packers nine to zero. Coleman
Owens went four receptions for forty six yards, Michael Pittman
Junior two receptions thirty one yards, and Anthony Gooule three
receptions thirty yards. Ray Blake Freeland, the backup offensive lineman,
(02:56):
suffered a leg fracture. Final preseason game of the year
for the Colts will be next Saturday, August twenty third
at Cincinnati take on Joe Burrow and the Bengals. Kickoff
at one o'clock WNBA, and you had a fever back
in action tomorrow after their loss last night to the
Washington Missics eighty eight to eighty four, they will travel
to Connecticut take on Kelsey Plumb in the sun. That
(03:16):
game will be tomorrow at one o'clock. You can listen
to it on our flag ship station on ninety three
to five and one oh seven to five the fan
final scores in the MLB, Chicago Cubbs get the win
over the Pittsburgh Pirates three to one. They all had
a Braves stomp the Cleveland Guardians ten to one. Looking
down the list, and we have a final after eleven innings,
the Milwaukee Brewers take down the Sids ninety Reds six
(03:38):
to five, and we also have a final from Kansas City.
The Worlds take down the Chicago White Sox six to two,
and the Detroit Tigers lead the Minnesota Twins six to
five at the bottom of the eighth, only one out there.
New York Yankees lead the Saint Louis Cardinals twelve to seven.
In the bottom of the seventh, the South Bend Cubs
and the Bloyd skycarp are knotted up at three apiece.
(03:59):
At the bottom of the fifth and the MiLB. All
the scores in the MiLB. The Scranton Wolfs Bear Rail
Riders TechEd down the Indianapolis Indians eleven to five, and
the four Wayne ten Caps shout out the West Michigan
White Caps three to nothing. NASCAR are racing the Richmond
Raceway the Cookout four hundred. Austin Dillon currently leads with
one hundred and ten laps left. He won this race
(04:19):
one year ago in controversial fashion, taking out Joey Logano
and Denny Hamlin in the last corner of the Last laugh.
Pit stops underway right now top five as they run
Austin Dillon, Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace, Alex Bowman, Austin Cedric
and William Byron. Well, we'll update you that race more
as we go along. For New Viginia Sports Amleana Coons.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Welcome back, everybody. This is Indiana Sports saw front to
you by Indiana Donor Network Colts and green Bay tonight
or excuse me this afternoon preseason game Green Bay wins
at twenty three to nineteen with me the man who
had the broadcast on the TV broadcast the voice television
voice of the Colts and prec and work, Greg Regstraw. Greg,
(05:02):
thanks so much. I want you to know I did
something I don't normally do. I sat and watched that
game today.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
Well, it was a good thing to do because it
was pretty hot outside, so enjoy the air conditioning to
watch them NFL State.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
But I felt compelled to support my friend Greg Regstrow,
and you did a fabulous job. But you need I
need your help, right. I'm I'm just I'm an old
basketball coach. I'm not a big fan of preseason games.
It's hard for me to evaluate what was good and
bad about a preseason game when both teams are still
(05:38):
trying to figure out what's going on.
Speaker 6 (05:41):
I would say this, I thought the Coolts ones when
they did a lot more good than bad. You know,
Green Bay won the game twenty three to nineteen. And yes,
Green Bay did not play their starters in this game.
It is the second consecutive preseason game for the cults
of the team that didn't play their starters. But to
be honest, both the Packers and the Ravens, whom the
Colts have played, you know, those two teams kind of
(06:04):
know what they are, you know, the Ravens more so
the Packers. The Packers know they're they're a playoff team
that you know, in a really good division where everybody's
kind of heading in the right direction. You know, they're
they're probably in the ten to eleven win track. They's
they're really young, but they kind of know who their
starters are. You know. The Ravens are thinking about how
(06:24):
do we get past the Bills and the Chiefs to
be a super Bowl team. You know, the Ravens are
a twelve or thirteen win team. The Colts don't have
that luxury. You know, I think the Colts could be
a playoff team if everything clicks right, if they figure
out you know, the quarterback position. You know, if their
defense we think ends up ends up being you know,
(06:45):
as maybe as good as it can be. The Colts
kind of have to play their guys. You know that
they played a handful of them last Thursday, played a
lot of starters at least a couple of series, if
not three today. So I'll put it to you this way, Bob,
I had a better feeling after today's game that did
against the Baltimore you know game nine days ago, because
I think for the most part, the starters played well
(07:05):
when they were in there. The only thing that was
troubling was the number of players that left the game
due to injury. Yeah, that's the part that was because
it was three or four guys. That's the part that
was concerning in the first half.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
Yeah, And there are positions of the you know, your
defensive backs and your interior linemen. A couple of the
injury spots that are I think big blows.
Speaker 6 (07:29):
Correct and so you know at the defensive back spot,
those injuries have piled up heading into today's game. So
Kenny Moore got hurt in practice earlier this week. Justin Wally,
who was your third round pick out of Minnesota, he
got hurt in the workout against the Ravens last week.
He has done for the season. Jalen Jones has been
a real fine for you the last couple of years.
Seventh rounder of Texas A and M. He is out
(07:50):
with a hamstring injury that I think is going to
carry through the preseason. We'll see if it affects him
in the week one. You know, Juju Brant's local product
has been unfortunately nothing but hurt the last couple of years.
He's kind of dealing with that again. Well, today, it
affects Jonathan Edwards. The day, it affects Hunter Wohler, who
was more of a safety but it really played well,
a seventh round er out of Wisconsin. Now you flip
(08:11):
to the offensive line where you lose Braden Smith and
Blake Freeland. We're almost on back to back plays, and
Freeland was a guy that you know they needed the
cart for him. And when the coach comes out of
the game and mentions leg fracture, that lets you know
how significant it was. That's an injury that could cost
him the season. So you're right, every team goes through injuries.
(08:32):
In terms of the preseason. It's just like a game
of Roulette. But seemingly for the Colts, they are piling
up at defensive back and along the offensive line.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
I made it four minutes and didn't bring up the
quarterback situation. How's that That's impressive.
Speaker 6 (08:46):
That's three minutes later than most.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
That's a lot of restraint on my part. All right.
You know, it's pretty obvious that you have a competition
for the number one spot and it's not going to
be an easy decision to make.
Speaker 6 (08:59):
No, and rankly the two guys and not separated themselves.
You know, I think frankly, both guys I thought played
well today. You know, Daniel Jones in two series gets
three points seven of eleven hundred and one yards. Anthony
Richardson I thought played better than his statline indicated. He
led two scoring drives six of eleven I want to say,
seventy three yards at one carry for nine yards. Shane
(09:21):
Psyching was was pretty upfront and honest I thought postgame
when he basically said, hey, I'm about to make a
decision here and so we'll see whom that is going
to be. But I kind of get the inkling. Next
time Shane talks the media, I think is going to
be on Tuesday, and he just might reveal whom his
starting quarterback is going to be for Week one at
(09:42):
that time.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Oh it's a great tease too. I love how you
do this. There's going to be a decision, but we're
not going to tell you who it is.
Speaker 7 (09:51):
I love knowing Shane.
Speaker 6 (09:52):
I think he wants to have that conversation with the
two players run his team captains. But I would imagine
that when the team reacnvens on Tuesday, he's going to
tell the quarterbacks and the team in total whom that
starter is going to be for week one.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
Good for him, I mean, I think it helps everybody out.
Speaker 8 (10:09):
All right.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
I know you had an incredibly long day and I
appreciate you taking time to call me. I'm gonna turn
you loose so you can go home and enjoy the time.
Greg Reagstraw the best at what he does. Greg, have
a great weekend, thanks buddy.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
NFL preseason Week two Green Bay Packers take down the
Indianapolis Colts at Lucashola Stadium, final score of twenty three
to nineteen. Dale Jones going seven for eleven on the
day as a starting quarterback one hundred and eleven yards,
Anthony Richardson six for eleven seventy three yards. Here's head
coach Shane Siken on the performance of bourth quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
I mean, I'll go back and look at it, but
I think the operation just getting the completions moving. The
ball up and down the field, taking what the defense
gives you. I think both of them, you know, did
some nice things. I think Daniel Finish, you know, seven
of eleven and ar was six of eleven, and you
know we didn't turn the ball over there at that position,
which was good.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Cool to be back in action next Saturday, August twenty third,
to take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Cincinnati, and for
head coach Shane Steichen, he's going to need a quarterback name.
Start a quarterback name here very soon.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
I've seen obviously three weeks of it. So I'd like
to have a decision here shortly.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Do you have any more clarity on your decision now
than you did twenty four hours ago?
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Yeah, I feel I feel pretty clean when I make
that decision, and again when I make this decision, I'm
going to do what I feel is best for this
football team WNBA.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
After the fever loss of the Washington Mistics eighty eight
to eighty four last night, they'll be back in action
tomorrow to take on the Connecticut Sun. That tip off
for that game is tomorrow what o'clock. You can listen
to it on our flagship station on ninety three to
five and one oh seven five of the fan Kaitlyn
Clark estimated to return on August twenty six, that is
per ESPN, and that will be when they take on
(11:53):
the Seattle Storm just down the road at Gamebridge Fieldhouse.
NASCAR Cupsherre is still continuing to race at Richmond Race Way,
seventy laps ago. Ryan Blaney is the leader, Austin Dillon second,
Alex Bowman third, Josh Berry fourth, Joey Logano fifth, Dylan
and Bowman still looking to make it in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Lovell. This is Indiana Sports
Talk college football right around the corner. Let's talk a
little Hoosiers football with my estimation the smartest guy in
sports for peaks dot Com, our good friend, Jeff rab Johns. Hello,
Jeff coach, how you doing today. I'm not doing as
well as you, that's for sure. I'm not writing for
(12:34):
Pegs and I'm not covering one of the most exciting
football programs in the United States. You know, this little
gig I have on the weekends is pretty good. But
all in all, I think you got me beat.
Speaker 7 (12:46):
Well, It's it's a great gig. I'm very fortunate and
it has been fun to watch at you in the
fall practice. Things We've seen, things we've heard, and I
think there's a couple of storylines that are really starting
to emerge in. One of the interesting ones is the
offensive line. Based upon what we've seen, what we've heard
from coach Signetti, everything suggests that he's offensive line could
(13:07):
be very good. Obviously, Drew Evans, redshirt junior, he's been
out there. You can see him push off, he's playing.
He's obviously coming off the Achilles injury, but he's looked good.
You got redshirt junior Carter Smith who's outstanding last year,
Bray Lynch, another red shirt junior, Pat Coogan to transfer
from Notre Dame who's going to start at center. Khalil
(13:27):
Benson transferred back, ty U spend a year out of Colorado,
Zen Makowski from Ohio State. I think they've got a
chance to be a pretty good offensive line and a
guy who might be a potential X factor. As far
as like, Okay, you know football. Do you watch football?
Do you watch the ball? If you watch, you know,
things happen other than the ball. I'm gonna throw an
(13:49):
interesting name out who might not ever show up much
in the stats. Riley Nolkowski. Now, why would they bring
that up. He is an athletic cast iron stove of
a human being as a blocking tight end. I mean
he looks at you should not be able to move,
and you see him out there the drills where you're
started to grab the tight end or rip them or
move him. People are slamming into this guy and he
(14:11):
doesn't move. They're grabbing his shoulder pads, pulling him. He's
not moving. I mean it looks like a human being
is grabbing a cast iron stove and the guy. So
here's why I find him interesting. If you have a
really good offensive line and then all of a sudden
you throw in a stud of a blocking tight end. Obviously,
a Holden stage is going to be your receiving tight end.
But if you've got one more guy and the offensive
(14:32):
line performs as well as it can, and you've got
Fernando Bend does a quarterback hitting elijahs rad Omar Cooper, E. J. Williams,
Holden stays of passes, I'm very intrigued to see what
you can do in the running game. I'm curious to
see if having a stud as a blocking tight end. Obviously,
Zach Corton was really good last year. Zach Corton kind
of played that role. He was good, But I'm curious
to see if Noahkowski is in that vein and maybe
(14:54):
even a tick better. So I think the offensive line
plus no Olkowski plus the passing game, I'm really intrigued
to see what that can do. And obviously that's keeping
in mind that in twenty twenty four i U rush
for one and forty six yards, first time since twenty fifteen.
They rushed for more than two thousand yards, So they
were really good last year. But I'm curious, Okay, can
(15:16):
they even be better? I'm just really curious to see
the offensive line plus the passing game plus Melakowski. Are
you going to be able to hit five, six, seven
more plays in the running game that can maybe against
the top tier teams keep you in possession of the ball,
one more drive, one more scoring drive. To me the
(15:37):
offensive line what they might be able to do. I
think that's that's one of the most interesting storylines in
the fall so far, outside of the sexy things like yes,
Fernando Mendoza can.
Speaker 6 (15:47):
Throw the ball.
Speaker 7 (15:48):
Yes, those of the receivers are great, but when you
look beyond just the sexy things, the obvious thing. To me,
that's one of the really interesting storylines as it relates
to what's happening in the fall with AALU football.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Okay, I'm a believer, you know, I've converted. I believe
everything you're saying, especially the passion with which you delivered.
It has made me a big believer because I know you,
I know how that works. But the other part that's
fun about it too is you know they were maybe
able to seek up on some people a year ago.
That's not happening this time. You're going to have to
(16:21):
line up and play and go nose to noses people
and they have the as you're pointing out, they have
the people to do it.
Speaker 7 (16:28):
Yeah. No, you make a really good point. They're not
sneaking up on anybody. Nobody is going to be overlooking them.
You know, there was some talk last year maybe Nebraska
overlooked value. Well, when you get smacked fifty six to
seven or whatever, it was right, and maybe you overlooked them,
but maybe once you get punched in them out three,
four or five six time, maybe stop overlooking them. So
(16:50):
they're not going to sneak up on anybody, obviously. I
think it's the fourth time in the last fifty or
so years they've been ranked preseason. People know what Kurt
Signetty is capable of. They know I used to level.
They're gonna be a known commodity going into the season.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
Jeff rap jobs with us from peaks dot com. All right, outstanding,
Look what's happening on the offensive end? Talk to me
about defensively. This is a team historically defense has been
a problem for this group. It wasn't last year. I'm
assuming it won't be one this year.
Speaker 7 (17:23):
No, I don't think it's going to be. You know
that they ranked in the top ten last year in
a number of categories as far as you know, points
allot per play, even points a lot per game, although
points elab per game can kind of depend upon pace
of play. But when you're when you're top ten in
points all out per play, that really I think that's
a good indicator of how stingy you are in actually
(17:46):
giving up points. And you have all Americans returning at
all three levels. You got Michael Kamara there on the
detention line right, Aiden Fisher, a middle linebacker D'Angelo ponds
there in the secondary. So you've got all Americans returning
at all three levels, and you've got some you know, addition,
some depth. I think they're I think they're going to
be really good. And with defensive coordinator Brian Haynes running
(18:07):
the show, you know, his objective is go attack the offense.
He's not well, let's sit back and read and react
and try to keep them from only only let only
let them get three, four or five yards. No, his
idea is, let's go, let's go attack, and that's one
of the reasons Indiana was one of the better teams
as far as tackles for loss. The Bryan Haynes philosophy
(18:27):
is they have the ball, whoever has it, go attack him,
don't just let him come up. I'm gonna go through blocks.
We're going to attack blocks. We're gonna attack. And I
think they're going to be good defensive league. And I
don't know if the numbers are going to be as good,
only because they have to be to Oregon and two
Penn State. Okay, Ohio State won the national championship last year.
They lost at Oregon. That's an incredibly bright Penn State's
(18:50):
top five in the country, you have to go to Iowa.
There have been plenty of good teams we've seen go
to Iowa and lose. So those are games that are
certainly not gimmes by any means, especially at Penn State
and at Oregon. But I do think Indiana's defense is
going to attack like it did last year. As long
as you have Brian Haynes running the show. You got
guys like Kamaro just attacking off the edge. You got
(19:11):
Ponds back there block knocking down passes, intercepting passes, and
you have just an absolute alpha leader in Aidan Fisher
who really understands he's like a better version of Mike,
and McFadden just knows how to attack ball carriage knows
how to attack angles. I think Indiana's defense is going
to be very stout once.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Again, did a great job going through the schedule, Jeff,
and they've taken a little, obviously criticism about the schedule,
and I always find it fascinating people in the media
and other places want to criticize. You understand this as
well as anybody. It's not easy to schedule. The scheduling
is really really difficult, and it's not like you can
(19:51):
just put together the schedule you want, and you know
the fact that you have certain conferences playing more games
in conferences than others. That's a big deal, an important deal.
And as a former coach, I can tell you what's
also important is you need to schedule games you can win,
and then you need to win the games you schedule.
That's called survival. It's very simple. That was the advice
(20:13):
I got early on in my career. Schedule games you
can win, and make sure you win the games you schedule.
Pretty simple, and that's how this is. Yet here they
are getting criticized for it because they're playing in one
of the best conferences in the country.
Speaker 7 (20:26):
Sure, and like you said, there's a difference in number
of conference games played. The SEC only plays eight conference games.
The Big Ten plays nine. So if an SEC team
plays eight conference games and then one non conference game
against the Power four team, they're playing nine power forward
conference game and playing nine power forward total games. That's
the same as a Big Ten team that plays nine
(20:48):
Big Ten games and then three games against non Power
four conference teams. And it was kind of funny when
somebody asked Ker Signetti, we're out there in Las Vegas,
a couple weeks so for Big ten Football media, and
somebody kind of asked, so smart Alec question about like coach,
what was the deal with Tropp and Virginia, and Signetty
paused and smiled and says, well, I guess we adopted
the SEC scheduling model. Like oh man, I do enjoy
(21:14):
I do enjoy Sieg as a coach, and I also
enjoy him behind the mic because occasionally he's just throwing
out red meat or thrown out darts. And I really
don't think you've been around this game a long time.
I don't think there's a lot said when Court Signetti's
behind the mic that does not have an intent behind it.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Oh no, quest very aware of what we're.
Speaker 7 (21:35):
Doing, and he's making the headlines he wants to make
to get the points across.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
He wants to make you understand this. Guys like coach
Signetti is smart guys, and smart guys don't waste words, right,
especially when you're in that position. Everything about this program
just screams excitement. That's it's it's fun and it continues
(21:59):
to be fun, all right. Jeff rev Johns, I wish
I had more time, brother, I've got to run enjoy
talking let's do this soon. I appreciated Jeff.
Speaker 2 (22:09):
Fifty laps remaining in the Cookout four hundred from the
Richmond Raceway for the NASCAR Cup Series Adible an incredible
battle between Austin Dillon and Ryan Blaney. Pit stops just
getting underway for the final time, and Austin Dillon gets
the better of Ryan Blaney. Austin Dillon is not locked
into the playoffs. He is currently outside the bubble. A
(22:30):
win would solidify him into that playoff position. He won
this race one year ago in very dramatic fashion as
he took out Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin on the
last corner of the last lap. Last year, Ryan Blady,
though already locked in Like I said, stop Pitts stops underway.
Current top three Brad Keselowski, Austin Dillon, and Carson Joseovar.
(22:51):
Looking into the MLB final scores, Chottle Cubbs get the
three to one win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Milwaukee Brewers
take down the SCE they read six to five in
eleven innings they all Hata Braves dominate the Cleveland Guardians
ten to one. Kansas City Royals six to two over
the Chicago White Sox. At the bottom of the ninth,
Detroit Tigers lead the Minnesota Twins eight to five, two
(23:13):
outs to remain that game is close to being done.
And then the bottom of the ninth as the New
York Yankees lead the Saint Louis Cardinals twelve to seven.
Then looking into the MiLB in Dapolis Indians lose a
tough one to the Scranton Wilkes Bear rail Riders eleven
to five, fort Wayne Tin Caps shut out the West
Michigan White Caps three to nothing. And then looking into
(23:36):
South Bend and Beloit, South Bend Cubs lead the Bloyd
Skycarp four to six at the bottom or assuming four
to three at the bottom of the sixth. Indiana Fever
back in action tomorrow to take on the Connecticut Sun
tip off at one o'clock. You can listen to it
on our Flex Septation on ninety three to five and
one oh seven to five of the Fan for newke
Indiana Sports.
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Amana Coons Welcome back everybody on Bob Lovelus's network, Indiana's
Indiana Sports Uck. It talks to minor league baseball. You
just heard Land and give you The Indianapolis Indians score
tough loss eleven to five to Scranton Wilkesbury in a
tough night for the Indians, Howard.
Speaker 9 (24:14):
Well, Bob, you're right about that, but it didn't start
out that way at all. The Indians had an early
three to one lead, and they had a lot of
momentum because they'd won three of the first four games
in this series, right, and they were playing with confidence.
They didn't need a great game from their starter, Bubba Chandler,
starting pitcher. They didn't need a really good game. They
(24:37):
needed a fairly good game, and they didn't get it.
And you lot too many people, and Scranton got three
runs to go ahead in the bottom of the fourth.
Bubba walk six men in less than four innings, and
then Scranton got six runs in the fifth inning to
break the game open.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
Bob.
Speaker 9 (24:58):
The Indian pitchers walked the eleven batters tonight.
Speaker 1 (25:01):
Oh my, you and I have talked on this show
for thirty one years, my friend, we go back a
long way, and I promise you you know this. Almost
every year we talk multiple times about you can't walk people.
You just cannot do it if you put them on base,
they'll come back to score.
Speaker 9 (25:21):
Well, it's so true. And you know who's an example
of that, by the way, is Nolan Ryan. As talented
a picture as he was. He walked too many people
and had heard him he struck out a lot of
guys just walked the most. Guys struck out the most.
But the old line, when I was first starting in
the Reds with the parent team, they used to say
in the Reds organization all the time, they'd say to
(25:43):
the pictures, bases on balls will come back to haunt you,
as you were just saying, and they usually do, and
they did big time tonight to the Indians.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
Yeah, because you're just giving people opportunities. You've given people
base runners, and so much can happen when you have
guys on base. So much can happen, some of it's
not good, and so yeah, keep people off base and
you'll go a long way and trying to win games.
All right, what's happening tomorrow? We can wrap it up,
(26:16):
get ourselves back on track.
Speaker 9 (26:19):
Right, it's a really big game. So it's tonight because
Scranton won beat the Indians. Syracuse also won its game,
so the Indians are four games behind. Both Scranton and
Syracuse with thirty one games to play. Tomorrow is a
bullpen day, and we'll see what happens. You'll see five
(26:41):
or six pitchers used by the Indians. They're shorthanded the
bullpen due to injuries. They'll have to gut it through
and they play in Syracuse on Tuesday as the road
trip continues.
Speaker 1 (26:54):
Hall of Famer Howard Kilman, the legendary voice of the
Indianapolis Indians. Indians lose at Wilksbury Scranton Wilkesbury eleven five.
They'll play again tomorrow. Howard is always thanks for the call.
Have a great day.
Speaker 9 (27:10):
Bob is always thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
Fever play tomorrow. Scott Agnes joins me from Fieldhouse Files.
Scott Agnes, what is going on?
Speaker 10 (27:21):
Good after good evening, coach.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Yeah, the storms here in.
Speaker 10 (27:24):
Downtown Indy really picked up here.
Speaker 6 (27:27):
Wondering what that's.
Speaker 10 (27:27):
Going to do to the list tournament coming up tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
Yeah, absolutely all right, field House Files everyone, if you
want to get smarter about the Fever and the Pacers,
you absolutely must be on this site because Scott's tremendous
at what he does. He really really is first rate
it's a tremendous source of information for everyone, So make
(27:51):
sure you go there, all right. Tough one last night,
and we're running out of games, am I correct?
Speaker 7 (27:59):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (28:00):
They have just ten games left, yeah, including tomorrow at Connecticut,
and six of them are on the road. So yeah,
it's go time for sure.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
Yeah, it really is, and it's this is a team
that has withstood some really really difficult circumstances and continues
to play and play well. Last night was it disappointment
without question.
Speaker 10 (28:24):
Yeah, this is a week that they needed to just
take advantage of playing the four worst teams in the
league record wise, which wraps up tomorrow in Connecticut against
it's a six win team in the Connecticut Sun. It's
a team rebuilding, the.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Team that's probably going to get moved to a.
Speaker 10 (28:41):
Different city here in the upcoming year. The Fever really
need to take care of their business because right now
there's no guarantee you to a playoff spot. There's thirteen
teams in the league, eight get in and right now
they're teetering on sevens right now and continue to drop
as several other teams here have got hot of late,
in particular with La getting healthy.
Speaker 1 (29:03):
Yeah, and you can't talk about the fever without asking
the question, and I apologize, But do we know anything
at all about the status of Caitlin Clorin.
Speaker 10 (29:15):
No, she continues to remain out indefinitely. She's doing some work,
mostly conditioning because look, as we talked about before, more
than just coming back from the injury. She hasn't played
basketball for what will be.
Speaker 6 (29:28):
More than a month now.
Speaker 10 (29:29):
It was was it was July fifteenth against Connecticut, by
the way up in Boston.
Speaker 6 (29:35):
Ironically, here they're about to play again. But uh, I
think at this juncture the hope would be at the
by the.
Speaker 10 (29:43):
End of them for the final week or two of
the regular season. This is a girl that's ultra competitive
to me. To me, there's two things here. One super competitive,
she's not one that's just gonna be well, ah, this
season's aw wash. You know we're injured or anything like, no,
no, no, no no.
Speaker 6 (30:01):
And then more than that, secondly, number one, you got
to number two.
Speaker 10 (30:04):
You got to realize the w NBA season as a
whole is just four.
Speaker 6 (30:07):
Months roughly, and so she doesn't play.
Speaker 10 (30:10):
Again till next season.
Speaker 6 (30:12):
You gotta wait all the way to May. I don't
think that'd be good physically or mentally.
Speaker 1 (30:16):
No, No, not at all. That's a great way to
put it. I'm not not intellectualized at that way. It
makes perfect sense. But in her absence, though, we've seen
some people step up and play and elevate their game.
How much more can you say about Chelsea Mitchell and
what she's done.
Speaker 10 (30:33):
Yeah, Kelsey's been fantastic. I mean, she's she's the player
that I like the fact that coach, she's been able
to enjoy so much of this because she was here
at rock bottom when the Driver were a five win
team and now they're selling out every arena they go to.
But I wonder a little bit if if she's been
asked to do too much. And I thought, laugh game,
(30:53):
she just kind of looked like she was dragging physically,
like she got thrown down to the floor a couple
of times and looked like she was maybe clutching her
growing right a couple of times. And I'm like, oh, no,
not any more injuries, because you mentioned earlier, this has
just been a difficult circumstances, right, No, this has been
a season unlike any of them, including Stephanie White, has
(31:13):
ever experienced before. Because of the roller coaster of emotions, injuries,
your number one acquisition in the offseason quitting and wanting
to go elsewhere, like this is not a normal year
at whatsoever.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Scott Agnes with us from the Fieldhouse Files been impressed
that Leah Boston just continues to be one of the
best post players in the league. And the emergence of
Sophie Cunningham Lexi Hall give you some talented wing players,
multifaceted skill set for both of them. So you know,
again positives in the absence of Caitlin Clark, more minutes,
(31:53):
more responsibilities for some key players.
Speaker 6 (31:56):
Yeah, so those are your core four, not just right now,
but moving forward.
Speaker 10 (31:59):
I think for the next several years. Would be the
hope you throw Natasha Howard in for this year certainly
and what you're doing. But now given the fact that
one they're without true point guards. Really their last acquisition
signed to a seven day coach incredible story. But she
was overseas in Greece playing has never played in the
(32:20):
w NBA. It speaks to the lack of depth at
that position right how they needed to bring someone in
just on a need basis. Now she played big time
college basketball. Talking about Kyri Lambert at Duke and at Texas.
But this is the dire situation the Fever are under,
so it's on that core.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
Group to step up.
Speaker 6 (32:40):
But they've they went into this season feeling good about
their depth. I don't think you can feel as good
about it right now. We saw them shrink in.
Speaker 10 (32:48):
Rotation in the last game. I'm not sure if that's
sustainable for the final ten ten games, coach, because you
have Lexi Hole playing thirty six minutes.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
Mitchell playing thirty four.
Speaker 1 (33:01):
Yeah, I wonder about are you.
Speaker 10 (33:03):
Able to maximize what they're able to get when they're
playing such a high workload.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
That's a great question.
Speaker 6 (33:09):
Light.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
What time tomorrow wee clock fan.
Speaker 6 (33:12):
Duel locally and NBA TV across the nation.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Perfect, We'll be there. Always great to talk to you, Scott,
Scott Angnies from field House Files. Again you want to
know more about what's going on with the Fever and
with the Pacers. It's the best source you need to
be there if you're not already there, have a great weekend, Scott,
thanks so much for the call.
Speaker 6 (33:33):
Yeah, I appreciate the kind words. Always good to talk
with you.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
Lenna. Coon's here for yet another Indiana Sports Talk Scoreboard update,
fifteen laps to go from the Richmond Raceway for the
Cookout four hundred and in the NASCAR Cup Series, Austin
Dillon is looking to go back to back at Richmond
and make his way into the playoffs. He is currently
out of the playoffs, but if he wins, he is in.
He has right now a three or a four point
(34:00):
five second lead over second place Alex Bowman, who is
again won another one of those drivers that needs a
win and in, but Bowman closing the gap. Gap is
now down to three point six seconds, so it will
be a winning in between Austin Dillon and Alex Bowman.
Ryan Blaney in third and his team Penske teammates Austin
Sindrick and Joey Logano fourth and fifth respectively. Kyle Larson sixth,
(34:23):
Daniel Suarez seventh, Josh Berry eighth, Denny Hammon ninth, and
Zane Smith completes the top ten with just thirteen laps
to go from Richmond Raceway. And it was also a
good night Gone Bad for twenty three eleven racing. Tyler
Reddick won the first stage, got crashed out. Bubba Wallace
won Stage two and had a bad pit stop had
a tire get away from him. So twenty three to
eleven's day has been shot. In the MLB, Kyle Cubbs
(34:47):
got the six three to one win over the Pittsburgh Pirates,
blacke bur six to five and eleven innings over the
Cincinnati Reds, Alana Braves ten to one over the Cleveland Guardians,
Kansas City Royals six to two over the Chicago White Sox,
Detroit Tiger Final eight to five over the Minnesota Twins,
and we now have a final from Saint Louis as
the Yankees get to win over the Cardinals twelve to eight,
(35:08):
and then in the MiLB, Indians lose to the rail
Riders eleven to five. For went TinCaps shut out the
West Michigan White Caps three nothing, and the South End
Cobbs lead the boy Scot Cart five to three for
Netwick Indiana Sports All Manakins.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports Talk, brought to
you by Indiana Donor Network, Notre Dame Football. Notre Dame
in the middle of practice getting ready for the season
to start. As always with me, one of our favorites,
the author of the incredibly Popular Teddy and the Gipper
A Notre Dame Friendship, Doctor Lynn Clark. Doctor Clark, thanks
(35:47):
for the call. You're writing another book, correct, I am.
Speaker 8 (35:51):
It's going. It's currently at the publishers right now. It's
called Vision, Values and Victories Notre Dame Style Leadership. And
it was a great book to write.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Yeah, I would think so. No absence of the topics
and great stories and great anecdotes I would imagine in
addition to that, Yeah, you were one of the busiest guys.
I know you are involved in the CNN initiative. You
and I have talked about this briefly. Just remind people
(36:23):
what that's about.
Speaker 8 (36:24):
Well, we're going to have a Zoom call on Monday,
and I hope you got the Zoom indict. If not,
I'll send it to you, but it.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
Need to you know people. Yeah's text it to me
because I'm having some email issues, so text all that
stuff to me. I'm looking forward to being on it.
Speaker 8 (36:41):
Well, we're really excited about that. It's an immersive experience.
It's not necessarily teaching sports, but it's putting journalists, the
next generation of sports journalists in a situation where they
have to recover an event like what I experienced at
the Sugar Bowl last year with the terrorist activity, or
what happened in too with the munich Olympics, and it's
(37:02):
just taking it to another level. And so we're really
looking forward to your input and putting something together that
will come to the United States and really spotlight the
state of Indiana.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
All Right, what's happening in South Bend. When we talked
last week, you had me excited about this football team.
I'm sure that we are similarly excited up there. But
you know, it is getting closer and closer to the start,
and they're always high expectations, and I think rightfully so
with this bunch.
Speaker 8 (37:32):
Yeah, fall camp is winding down with just two weeks
before the start of the season down in Miami, and
it's been a camp defined by really six pivotal storylines
that's going to shape the success of the Foightding Iris
this season. So let's go through those six bobs.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (37:46):
The first, obviously at quarterback, Kenny Minchee and CJ. Carr
are locked in a very tight battle for the starting position.
The media will meet with Marcus Freeman for a final
time before game week media activities. I don't anticip pay
that he will make the start of the announcement about
the starter. I expect that probably the week of the
(38:07):
Miami game, but right now it depends on who you
talk to. Both of these quarterbacks have great strengths, but
Notre Dame is loaded on the offensive line. They're deep
at running back and at wide receivers, so you really
don't need a quarterback that has to do everything. So
what they're going to be looking for is somebody who
has leadership abilities and is going to play consistent. So
(38:28):
that's going to be the determining factor. Number Two, the
running back very much a group of depths. But who's
going to be that third running back? Well, Mike Denbrock
have a three back rotation. I think he will to
give Jajari and Price and Jeremiah Love a little breather.
But that third battle right now is between Jabron Payne
and Anias Williams. The third storyline. Defensively, they've really added
(38:52):
to their nickel coverage with Alabama transfer Devonte Smith who
comes in. He did not allow a touchdown last year,
so he brings an expervariance and has really elevated that
secondary and that has some great players. Number four, it's
the return of six year graduate student Jordan Patello, who's
fighting back from an injury. When he gets back, he
(39:13):
brings energy, leadership in a great outside pass rush. And
then a number five sophomore Leonard more of the cornerback
of All American Freshman campaign a great open field tacular.
They expect him to even be better this season. And
then at number six, white out Jaden Greathhouse, who had
a breakout in the postseason last last season when he
(39:34):
had two touchdown passes in the championship game against Ohio State.
So how that shapes up is really going to determine
Notre Dame season. As we always talk about it, Bob,
the Irish need to stay healthy, but on paper they
look very good and I'm looking forward to that trip
down to Miami to kick off the twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
I don't blame you. I need you to hang on
through this short break, Okay, Lynn, We'll do Lynn Clark
and I will come back talk much more about Notre
Name football on Indiana's Sports Sock. Welcome back everyone on
Bob Lovel. This is Indiana Sports Sock. We resume our
conversation with doctor Lynn Clark Irish one one. Notre Dame
(40:12):
starts their football season with high expectations on the thirty
first at Miami of Florida. I know you're going to
have a miserable time at that game. Lynn Uh, talk
to me, give me a general outlook at this schedule
if you can.
Speaker 6 (40:28):
Well.
Speaker 8 (40:28):
I was just during the break, I was looking at
the schedule. It is a gauntlet. You set it off
at Miami, then they have a break. They come back
with their first by week and then the home opener
against Texas A and m thiks the next week. After that,
you've got Purdue coming in always a great battle interestate.
And then for the first time, Notre Dame goes to Fayetteville,
Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks. And so that takes
(40:50):
you through the end of September. But fortunately Notre Dame
has a bunch of home games in a row. They
start off the month of October against Boise State the
first time of opponent, and we know what Boise State
has done in the past, right, and that's going to
be the wear Green game, So a lot of hype
about that. And then they jump in with that acc
type schedule with North Carolina State, and on October eighteenth,
(41:12):
Southern cal comes to Notre Dame Stadium and Bob, this
might be one of the last times we see a
game with the USC because of their move to and
then Notre Dame. You know, is it going to be
USC or Navy that's going to be on the schedule,
So that's something that's going to be deciding in the
next couple of years. And then Notre Dame on the
road to Boston College, come back against Navy, on the
(41:32):
road to Pittsburgh, back home against Syracuse, and then finishing
up the season on the road at Syric or at Stanford.
So really not a bad travel schedule. But when you
take a look at the opponents, it's like fighting Muhammad Ali.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
Yeah, I mean it's listen. They you go to Notre
Dame to play the best. That's part of it, and
that's what you signed up to do, what you've talked about.
I think they're excited. Yes, the schedule is a challenge,
there's no question. But you think you have the depth.
(42:06):
You think they have the quality of depth, and at
your key positions, your skilled positions, you think you have
the necessary depth to do it. Now it's that classic situation,
We've got to go out here and execute.
Speaker 8 (42:19):
You need to execute. But fortunately Notre Dame has had
great recruiting classes to allow them to have depth. Everybody's
fighting for that next man in mentality. But then the
other thing that Notre Dame has done well over the
past decade is the strength and physical conditioning. They did
bring in coach Landau from the Denver Broncos, who has
elevated that weight room and that's been the difference the
(42:40):
past couple of years. November, the players were starting to
look tired, but it was like Notre Dame was kicking
it into a new gear in November last year and
that enthusiasm really carried into the postseason. So the big
difference with Notre Dame, it's the talent, it's the culture,
but more importantly, it's that strength and conditioning that has
led to the consistency, which is a theme by Marcus
(43:01):
Freeman this season.
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Notre Dame opens up on the thirty first of this
month at Miami of Florida. Doctor Lynn Clark, thanks so much.
Send me that link and info if you can't text
it to me. If you can, I'll look forward to
the call on Monday. Thanks Lynn, Thanks Bob, thank you.
Coming up top of the hour, school board update with
(43:24):
Land and Coons, and we still have one more hour
of fun. In that hour, we're going to talk about
the Colts, We're going to talk about Purdue football, and
talk a little minor league baseball. That's all coming up.
Schoolboard update, coming up with Land and Coons. This is
Indiana Sports Talk.
