more football to talk about and talking we talk about
the Pacers again. Scott Agnestil joinas Paul Condry to the bottom
of the hour to in high school football right now.
Though he's back, it's the Star Wars Show Network Indiana's
(00:20):
Brendan King.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
All right, coach, let's get it started with the eleven
and oh number two Indiana Hoosiers who roll over Wisconsin
this afternoon thirty one seven from Bloomington on Senior Day,
Fernando Mendoza had another spectacular performance, four touchdown passes twenty
two of twenty four through the air two hundred and
(00:41):
ninety nine yards, and he did it without his top
receiving threat, Elijah Surratt, missing back to back games, but
stepping up in his place again. The benefactor of that,
Charlie Becker. Over his last two weeks Penn State and
now Wisconsin, twelve catches two hundred and twenty six yards today,
reaching the end zone for a touchdown.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
Now the staff to Fernando looks has time, throws it
deep to the Antoni's.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
Gunspacker test, what test my Tony Thicker again?
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Thirty one yard place headed then has the first score
of the ball there. Indiana's on by next week and
then it's the Bucket game on Friday the twenty eighth
at seven thirty that will be in West Lafayette. As
for the number nine Notre Dame Fighting Irish, slowly but
surely over the last eight weeks creeping up those college
(01:32):
football playoff rankings, Notre Dame thirty seven, number twenty two,
Pittsburgh fifteen. The Irish are eight and two winners of
eight straight since the back to back losses to Texas
A and M and Miami to open the season, and
boy did Texas A and M give us scare Today
against unranked South Carolina at home, the number three Aggies
come up with a twenty eight point comeback to beat
(01:56):
South Carolina thirty one to thirty. So that continues to
help out Notre Dame in terms of strength of schedule.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
CJ.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Carr two touchdown passes, two interceptions as well, both tds
to Malachi Fields.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Second six car with another shot down field and he
did it again. Malachi Fields going up top.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Contest a tour on the call for ESPN field seven
grabs ninety nine yards, two touchdown scores. Irish have Syracuse
next week at home. They'll close the season at Stanford.
For Perdue, struggling in the first half, Purdue went scoreless
and a half number one out in Seattle, dropping Tonight's
game to Washington forty nine thirteen. Perdue remains without a
(02:40):
Big ten victory. They are two to nine. Eastern Michigan
got the best of ball State today twenty four to nine.
It was Youngstown State over Indiana State forty eight to
twenty nine. Sycamores are three and eight. Valperezo in overtime
ed Stetson thirty two thirty one. It's the first Pioneer
League win of the year of the Beacons. They're two
(03:01):
and nine on the season. San Diego beats Butler out
West twenty nine to seven, and in the Monaan Bell
it was DePaul over Wabash forty one twenty the one
hundred and thirty first Monon Bell Classic. Depaun proves to
nine to one. Wabash is still a very good eight
and two on the season, but it's the fourth straight
year that DePaul wins the Monon Bell. Quarterbacks Scott Bellentine,
(03:24):
the Andrean alum, twenty four to thirty five, four touchdowns,
three hundred and twenty eight yards. How about Wabash wide
receiver though Luke Adams nine catches, one hundred and eighty
nine yards. It's the fifty ninth win for DePaul in
the Monon Bell series going back to the eighteen hundreds.
College basketball Today for Butler down in Dallas against SMU.
(03:46):
Butler beat the Mustangs at hanklefield House last year. Not
the case this season as SMU holds on even though
Finley Bisjack had a chance to win at the buzzer.
Here's how it sounded on the CW.
Speaker 4 (03:56):
This Jack, Shia McCourt, This Jack for the wind, Let's
save you.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Haze On.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Butler is three and one on the season for Purdue
Fort Wayne. They mash Boyce College out of Kentucky one
hundred and eighteen to sixty eight. And it was Arkansas
Little Rock over Ball State Today sixty eight to sixty
two for the Pacers, losing at home against the Raptors
one hundred and twenty nine to one hundred and eleven
was the final score. Pacers dropped to just one in
twelve on the year. It's the first time since the
(04:28):
twenty twenty two to twenty three season the Pacers have
dropped six straight. One thing in common from that season
that was the last time Tyrese Haliburton missed quite a
bit of time with injury. I'm Brendan King.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Welcome back everyone. We're gonna talk some more Pacer basketball
with Scott Agnes of the Fieldhouse Files, but let's go
to our good friend Chris Kievers, the football coach at
the University of Indianapolis. The Hounds win the GLVC regular
season title with the ver very impressive win twenty eight
(05:01):
to twenty one over Upper Iowa. Coach, thanks so much
of the call. Congratulations on the win and win in
the regular season championship.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
Thank you very much. It was a tough game. They
had a great plan and it was a nail bier.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Well, you know what, in your league, there are nail biders.
It's not an easy league to play, and you guys
have had great success. But you know, this time of year,
people are fighting for postseason play and fighting for all
kinds of things, So not really surprising it was that
closely played.
Speaker 5 (05:34):
No, we were the third rank, you know, all in
the region. We were three in the region, which means
we will host a playoff game. But they were seventh
from the region. So I mean, they were a very
good football team. They were two lost team and it
was a great game. It was, you know, we they
were driving down to win it. We made a pick
on the two yard line to win it.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
And it was.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Who got that interception?
Speaker 5 (06:00):
Alvin Contreras, a sophomore from Ben Davis High School.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
He's a really good player, outstanding. How were you able
to get command of this ball game?
Speaker 5 (06:11):
I don't know if we ever did. I mean, we
were up fourteen zero and they came back and scored
fourteen points. Is fourteen fourteen at halftime. We drove down
the first drive the second half and it went up
twenty one fourteen, and I mean, but it was and
then they came back and made it twenty one to
twenty one.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
It was.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
It was a it was a tough game. It was
they were well coached and it was a good football team.
You know, they were you know, they have votes in
the top twenty five and they were the seventh or
ranked team in the region, so we knew we were
getting into and these kids were you know, they were
three year stars at quarterback, at tailback, at receivers. So
(06:51):
it was a very good football team. It was a
good it was a great game. People loved watching it.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
I promise you that I understand that. When'd you get
the game winner?
Speaker 5 (07:01):
Uh, we got in it and with four minutes left,
our quarterback broke down and made a special way at
the end, he was running around. I mean, he's he's
he's a Harlan Hill Division two. You know, he's been
a winner. I mean, uh candidate, So, I mean he's
he's having a great year. He's been. He was last year.
Last week he was a Division two National Player of
(07:23):
the Week. I mean he's a special guy. Gavin Soukup.
He's from Seward, Nebraska, and he's a great player.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
All right, So now what happens postseason? Was we will
find out the game?
Speaker 5 (07:37):
Right, Yeah, it's just the clocket on Sunday. We'll find
out we should host. We were third we and we
beat number seven, so the top four teams host, so
it should not right we should host a game. We
just don't know who we're going to host. You know,
I don't know. People ask me, I have no idea
we'll find out that tell us us.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
This absolutely University of Indianapolis twenty eight twenty one winners
over Upper Iowa getting ready for postseason play. Chris Keevers, congratulations,
I know it's been a long day. I appreciate you
taking time, and good luck with the drawl and good
luck next time you're out.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
Thank you so much, really appreciate it. Nice talking with you.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Welcome, thank you, thank you very much. Pacers lose tonight,
one twenty nine, one eleven. Scott Agnes from the Fieldhouse
Files joins me. Scott, another gutty effort, but not enough
with this banged up and depleted roster that the Pacers have.
Speaker 4 (08:36):
Yeah, and coach, we've now seen that the Pacers set history.
It's the worst start in NBA franchise history. They were
one and eleven if you go back to nineteen eighty
eight eighty nine. But tonight, with another double digit loss,
they're fifth straight by seventeen plus. They're really struggling and
really hunting for it. And to be fair, it's not
(08:57):
just personnel either, Like it was disgraceful their transition and defense.
For example, tonight, how many I's easy layups they were
giving out not just off of made shots or missshots,
but also made shots. And then on top of that,
they had zero answers in the paint and gave up
seventy eight paid points.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
I would think that mentally, it'd be so hard to
go out there knowing that you are. You know, you
have so many guys who were not on act not
able to play. And I understand your professionals and all
of that. I get all that, but still these are
your buddies, these are your teammates. That's hard to go
out night after night and then no one's feeling any
(09:40):
pity for you. They see an opportunity to get a
w and that's what they're gonna do.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Yeah, there's a lot of levels to it, right Like
you're missing key players, you don't, You're missing some continuity.
Some players in the starting lineup or out then directly
impacts the starters and the bench group. And I think
one of the big things we're seeing is guys that
should be able to step up or there is finally
that opportunity. And the most notable name here coach is
jars Walker is just failing to meet the moment. Right now,
(10:08):
it feels like the moment the pressure, the demands are
too big on him that you're overthinking a little bit
out there. And so in turn, you get an incredible
thirty point game from Siakam, you get twenty two points
from Nemhard, but really not much else across the board.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Scott Agnes, Can you hang on through this break? Scott,
you got it perfect. We'll come back and talk more
Pacer basketball on Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Hey, I'm Brendan King with this network Indiana scoreboard update
here on Indiana's Sports Talk. The next time the Indiana
Hoosiers will be an action on the grid iron, it'll
be the Bucket Game Friday of the twenty eighth, seven
point thirty in West Lafayette at Purdue. As IU rolls
over Wisconsin today from Bloomington thirty one to seven. Indiana's
eleven and zero, and Fernando Mendoza once again put together
(10:57):
a Heisman like performance. He was twenty two to twenty four,
four touchdown passes, two hundred and ninety nine yards, again
without his top perceiving threat and Elijah Surratt. But that's
where Charlie Becker comes in. Becker, his last two weeks,
he's got twelve grabs for two hundred and twenty six
yards today, one hundred and eight yards to the year
(11:18):
and a touchdown score. And now in the season IU
defensively two is chipped in. They have scored ninety six
points off of turnovers forced by that IU Defensive Corps four.
Their bucket game opponent, Perdue did not go well tonight
in Seattle. Washington handles Perdue forty nine to thirteen. Boilers
went scoreless in the first half and by the second
(11:40):
half Washington was already well out in front. Washington threw
for two hundred and ninety four yards rushed for two
hundred and twelve. Perdue is two to nine and zero
to eight in the Big Ten for the number nine
Notre Dame Fighting Irish eight straight wins since the early
season losses to A and M and Miami thirty seven
to fifteen. Notre Dame rocks p today. Pet came in
(12:01):
at number twenty two in the nation. For what it's worth, CJ.
Carr did throw two interceptions, first career multi interception game
for CJ. Carr, but two touchdown passes, both of them
the Malchi fields and the host Syracuse next week at
Stanford to close the season, I'm Brendan King.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
Welcome back everyone. Scott Agnes from the Fieldhouse Files returns.
Pacers lose one twenty nine one to eleven. Toronto does
not get any easier easier, Scott Monday. They got to
go to Detroit and take on one of the best
teams in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Yeah, fans may not realize this, but the Pistons are
playing some of the best basketball to get started. They're
the exact opposite of the Pacers right now. They've gotten
off to eleven and two. They've rattled off here about
nine straight wins and have really found something. And that's
despite some players still being injured there and they're still
managing through it. I think they had five guys missed
(12:58):
their latest game. So it does not get any easier
for the Pacers. The bright side is aaron Ne Smith
did not suffer, you know, a season long injury. He's
going to be out at least for four weeks here
a month, and Ben Matheren expected to return it the
first of next week as well, So you'll get a
little help, but still not at full percent here, and
(13:19):
you're just gonna have to make do and figure it out.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
My thing here coach, is the.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Optimistic way to look at it is get to next month,
get to mid December, see what the team has when
they get a few more healthy bodies. Because remember as
similar but not nearly as bad thing happened last year
as so many players missing time. Maybe they can figure
it out by mid December. If not, then I think
it's fair to start looking ahead towards the future, but
(13:44):
not just yet.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
Give it another month.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Well, Coach Carlile and his guys are too smart. They
if they they'll figure it out. But it'd be nice
if you had healthier bodies. All right, Scott, I'm gonna
I have to run. I appreciate you taking time to
join me. Enjoy the weekend. We'll talk to you soon
(14:07):
very well. Thank you, Thanks Scott. The Monon Bell game
today goes too back to to Paul and be walbash
today forty one to twenty to Paul, rank number eleven
in Division three. We're joined by a very happy to
Paul head coach Brett Deetz. Coach, thanks so much of
the call. Congratulations on a tremendous day for you and
(14:28):
your guys.
Speaker 6 (14:30):
Thanks, I appreciate it. You know, anytime you can get
a rivalry, win and win the Monon Bell. It's a
great day, regardless of the manner, is what you got it.
But we played a great game today, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (14:43):
You did. And you've played a lot of great games.
I mean, you're not number eleven without a reason. You're
pretty good. And defensively, you just continue. It's staggering what
your guys are doing on the defensive side of the football. Coach.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
Yeah. I mean, you know, Wabash ride themselves and running
the football and be at a balanced offense, and they've
done that a great job all year. They got great
players up front, got good running backs, and I think
we held them to about thirty two yards rushing. So
it helps when you sacked the quarterback six times. You know,
we got back to our mojo. You know, we had
a mid season where we lost to John Carroll on
(15:20):
a last second, two minute drive. We lost the game
of fourteen seconds left and had a battle the next
week with Dennison. But I think we learned a lot
from that. I think we've grown a lot from week
five and week six, and you know, we're today a
different team than we were a month ago. And I
think today was a perfect example of seeing some of
that growth. You know, Wilbash goes right down the field today.
(15:44):
I don't know how many plays their first drive was,
we score a touchdown, we go three and out. You know,
I'm not sure if last Yar's team could have done that,
could have handled that in the Monon Bell game. But
we've stayed really gritty. We've been able to overcome adversity
and the offense over the next five drive sports touchdowns
on the next five drives and.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Hung in there, no go ahead. How hard is it
to keep your kids everybody's sky high and can't wait
to go and do all that. It has to be
difficult to have them maintain and and be as even
keeled as they can be, even though it's extremely difficult
to do.
Speaker 6 (16:21):
That's all we preach. I mean, we're constantly coaching that
from the mental side. That's all these kids have heard
about since they've got here, sure is how to handle
your in game demeanor, how to handle.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
You know, adversity.
Speaker 6 (16:35):
Where we pride ourselves on handling adversity really really well.
We call that grit in our program. And so we
we have a lot of grid equity built up in
us right now, and and so even though we we
had man really you could get two worse drives of
what we had. That very next drive we turn around,
we get we forced an interception and we flip the momentum.
We go down and score, and then you know, we
(16:56):
we kind of rode that wave there all the way
into the third quarter. We did still a little bit
in the third quarter. I mean we were up and
we were just trying to probably maintain, you know, but
the defense held strong. They gave up a touchdown there,
but we were able to bounce back, got a couple
of touchdowns in the second half of our own and
and kind of cruising there. They got a late touchdown
on our backups, but really controlled the game the whole
(17:20):
second half.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Scott Balantine had another great day for you. Three and
twenty eight yards and four touchdowns. Good to have him
as your trigger man.
Speaker 6 (17:30):
I'll tell you what. He is a sophomore, and I've
been ato Paul for sixteen years. It is the best
first year quarterback Monon Bell performance since I've been here.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
I brek he is a sophomore.
Speaker 6 (17:43):
But he plays like a senior. I mean he is
so invested, He worked so hard, he prepares so hard
you would be in our program and not know that
he was just a sophomore, right, So it is about
his preparation. Obviously having the brother, having your older brother
is your best even an All American, really helps you know.
He had a great day to day too. I mean
(18:05):
last year, while Bash really double teamed him every single
play and held him, it's only two catches last year,
and Robbie today had seven catches for eighty yards in
a touchdown. His counterpart on the other side had a
phenomenal game late in Lakowski from Carmel. He had five
catches for eighty eight and two touchdowns, including the last
play of the second half, went up and got went
(18:27):
over defender to kind of give us that twenty eight
to seven lead heading into halftime, which was a huge
momentum boost for us.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
All right, So now we wait until tomorrow to find
out what your destiny is in postseason play correct.
Speaker 6 (18:40):
Yes, we know we've made the playoffs. Our MPI is
there's forty teams that make the playoffs or NPI sitting
right around twenty one is what the predictions are is
what they think tonight. So I'm not exactly sure where
we'll go or what seed will be, but we know
we're in the dance and anything's possible from here.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
But I really do.
Speaker 6 (19:01):
Like how we're set up this year because we've played
in some close games, we've been able to be successful
after some adversity. So I think we're we're set up
here if we can get some guys back healthy and
we cannot get any more more guys injured for a
little bit of a run here, so we're excited about that.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Is the celebration still going on on campus?
Speaker 6 (19:23):
Oh, I'm sure it is. It's only eleven twenty five.
So yeah, after I hang up this phone call, I'm
about to pass out in my bed because I'm exhausted
from from the day.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
I don't blame you.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
Sure those young kids are still going?
Speaker 1 (19:36):
Do I have this ride? Do I remember? I'm I'm
you know, I'm in my seventies now and I've forgotten things.
But one year, when you you were just getting started,
you won and you called me and you had the
victory bell in your in your truck. Did you do this?
That's right, we had that conversation.
Speaker 6 (19:53):
Yeah, yeah, that was several years ago. Yeah, but yeah,
now the bells on camp us. I'm back at home
and and but yeah, like I said, it's it's it's
a great day. You know, you never go into these things,
you know, thinking that you know, you got it in
the bag. You have to play well, right, you have
(20:14):
to have some things to go right. And uh, you know,
we just went out and we got it today and
we pressured the quarterback. That was something we've been missing
over that middle part of our season. We got after
the quarterback. We sacked them six times and pressured them
a lot, and it was you know, it was it
was a good day for the past rush and that
really helped our back end big time. And obviously with
(20:35):
the offense that big stretch of five touchdown drives in
a row scoring touchdowns that that was a difference in
the game.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
To Paul Wabash for the one hundred and thirty first
Moon on Bill game. This one goes to de Paul
forty the margin. Brett Deets. Thanks again for the call,
congratulations and best to look to you and your guys
as you move forward in the tournament.
Speaker 6 (21:00):
Always a pleasure.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 6 (21:02):
I love talking about winning the mon On Bell.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
I appreciate the time. Coach, Thanks very much coming up,
We're gonna spend some more spend some more time talking
about football. Paul Conders from the Regional Radio Sports Network
and Indiana Football Digest will join me and talk about
regionals last night around the state. Get ready to move
(21:27):
forward and much more football to talk about. And it's
just been a busy and busy night, great night of football.
We appreciate coach Deetz joining us means a lot and
stay with us. Scoreboard update coming up with Brendan King.
This is Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
I'm Brendan King with this network Indiana Scoreboard Update and
here on Indiana's Sports Talk. Let's talk some college hoops
for the Butler Bulldogs today. Down in Dallas, Dogs down
ten with five minutes from in the game against SMU.
Even though they led by ten in the opening five minutes,
Butler came back to tye on a big three pointer
from Michael Ojai in the corner to Shai for the time, Yes, sir,
(22:14):
eighty five all in Dallas, Mark Minner on the call.
But SMU was one bucket better than Butler today and
SMU got some revenge after the Dogs beat the Mustangs
at Anklefield House last year. Butler is three to one,
and they head into their Feast week tournament. They'll face
South Carolina and Virginia Burnue Fort Wayne. How good did
(22:36):
the Dons look today? One hundred and eighteen to sixty eight.
They blast Boyce College out of Kentucky, Arkansas. Little Rock
earned the win against Ball State that was a final
sixty eight to sixty two. And now moving to the
NBA where the Pacers fell at home tonight to the
Toronto Raptors one hundred and twenty nine to one hundred
and eleven. Injury riddled Pacers got good performances tonight from
(23:00):
the likes of Pascal si Yakam with thirty points and
Andrew Nemhard with twenty two. Unfortunately for Indiana, the bench
points did not follow. The next highest scorer was TJ
McConnell with nine points on the night. So the Pacers
are just one in twelve on the season. Their lone
win did come at home, and it's the first six
game losing streak for Indiana since the twenty twenty two
(23:21):
to twenty three season. And remember that year is when
Tyler Tyrese Haliburton was dealing with his hamstring problems and
of course now Haliburton is out for the year. I'm
Brendan King.
Speaker 1 (23:33):
Welcome back everybody on Bob Level. This is Network Indiana's
Indiana Sports Tuck. We are one step closer to playing
for a state championship in football in our state. Great
regional action around the state last night. Who better to
talk about this than the man who literally wrote the
book is called the Indiana Football Digest. Remember the Indiana Indiana,
(23:57):
Indiana Football Hall of Fame, Indiana Sports Writers in Sports
Casters Hall of Fame. He's in the good Guy Hall
of Fame, the best friend football has in the state
of Indiana and friend of mine. Thank goodness, Paul Big
night last night. Miles McLoughlin. Again, another great night, another
record breaking night, but we had tremendous action as we
(24:20):
inch closer and closer to Lucas Oil Stadium.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
Well, first of all, great to be with you and
a great, much or better place to start because it's
probably the it's one of the best national high school
stories in ages. Boy to what in Knox's twenty one
win over Angola in the three eight championship, Mike Miles,
how about four touchdowns come to the national leader in
(24:45):
touchdowns in a season. He now has seventy one scores
for the season, breaking the previous mark of sixty eight
touchdowns held by Charlie Spiegel of newpal and PA McClendon
of I believe It's Alba Marley in North Carol Line.
In two thousand and one. He also ran fifty two
times for three hundred and seventy two yards and currently
(25:07):
has four thousand, seven hundred and sixty eight yards, which
breaks the national mark for yards in the season previous
set by Dominic Bragalone of South Williamsport, Pennsylvania with four thousand,
seven hundred four yards. I did all this homework on this,
and this is crazy right. He also has eleven thousand,
seven and sixty one yards for his career, which is
three hundred and sixty four yards short of the national record,
(25:30):
of course, held by Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens,
who has twelve and twenty four yards. Just one of
the neatest kids. And met him at the the Gritties
last year. He was on the cover over Indian Football
Digest and he is as talented as a football player.
He's just the nice thing. Yes, as young man as
you ever want to be around, So happy for him,
(25:51):
Happy for Russ. Reck I heard Russ last night on
the Big Show with you, and I know Russ is excited,
but you know, he's got a whole bunch of guys
up there for a block and form We probably meant
in all those offensive linemen, but you know, it is
what it is. It's a congratulation. Two miles on it
so far, you know, still playing, but he's going to
hit a tough road to coming up this next time
(26:13):
out because they are going to be on the road
at Fort William Bishop Leers eight and five team. They'll
at the eight and five record, fool you as you
well know, that's about as good as football teams as
they're going to have to compete against. So he's gonna
have his work cutout for him if he's going to
be able to, you know, rush for those three hundred
and sixty four yards that he needs to break the
national record.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
You know, I think it's been such a great story.
Uh And I don't think people recognize he never leaves
the field and he plays, he plays both ways, and.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
He had the entire night ask no question. In matter
of fact, he had the interception to seal the deal. Yeah,
Like I said, I mean a lot of people don't
understand the dynamics. And I you know, the kids are
playing six A five A football is a pretty good
rule of thumb, I said, as a pretty good rule
of thumb. Those guys are playing one way of the ball.
But these kids are playing one, two and three and
four at These guys are playing multiple possessions. Sometimes they're
(27:08):
so good, they're so talented on special teams, they never
even come off the field. And it's an amazing situation.
And you know this as a basketball coach. If you've
got a kid who could rebound, who can score, who
can deliver the ball from point A to point B,
you don't even want him thinking about coming out of
the ball game because you want him in there because
those kids are few and far between. So he's a
terrific athlete, terrific competitor. And I think that's what makes
(27:31):
them special.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
I don't disagree with that at all. All Right, tell
me what you thought about last night. My overall opinion
was the teams you expected to win seemed to win well.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Yes, very unique. I think there were some games in
there certainly that surprised me. But not to the point
where I fainted. I would say this, but the game
that maybe the game of the night had to be
the Concord Lafia Jeff game. I mean, just thinking about
what Craig Taylors kids did last night. You know, there's
back and forth all night and finally they scored. He
(28:05):
has the the cahunas that if you will to go
for a two point conversion, they fail, and the two
point conversion going for the win, which is going to think?
So all they do is they going You get the
special teams play of the year with a recovered on
side kick. They moved the ball down the field and
(28:25):
Nathan Potter drill the forty eight yard field goal as
time expired to lift the minimum of forty seven to
five win over Alafia Jeff and I Lafia Jeff probably
thinking round them now we're snake bitting. They've lost seven
or eight in a row now in the regional level,
and so it's the tough situation. That had to be
one of the best games that we've seen. I've had
some back and forth with Craig Kaylor via text message
(28:46):
today and I know he's probably still in shock and
probably still out of Gas. But those are the kind
of games that you saw, and I think there were
games in there that defenses were better than the offenses.
There's not a lot of those games you have it
this stage. But you know, for the most part, we're
seeing we're seeing teams just run up and down the
field on everybody. But I think the Cinderella Bob left
(29:09):
in the whole tournament has to be Mylin. You know,
Myland is the only team in the rest of the
tournament series now who is was not ranked in any
of the final polls. So if you look what the
the Indians have done, there's seven and four of the season.
They're going to be hosting South Pod, a real good
football team coming up, you know, next next Friday. But
(29:30):
that may be one of the neat neat stories that
we've seen in sometime. And of course, you know you've
got teams like you know, we've talked with the center
growth coach, both of us did last week, Eric Moore,
and it's always tough for him to see him go up.
But people, a lot of people don't know they had
four offensive starters and two or three defensive starters who
haven't played the last couple of weeks so they've been
(29:51):
doing it with mayors. Good win for Warren Central, but
once again, it's really neat to see some of those
backstories that play such a prevalent role that a lot
of people don't understand what's happening come to Fruition on
a Friday night.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
I think you're one hundred percent right, Paul Condry with us,
we're talking about high school football from last night. The
Sworn Central Center Group game was a crazy one three
point victory for Warren Central twenty four to twenty one.
We knew it was going to be good. Brownsburg continues
to flex their muscles. Unfortunately for you, your alma mater
(30:30):
took a tough loss to South End Saint Joe. That
one had to hurt. I know you had high hopes
for your guys.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
Yeah. I think that's a situation where you know, the
Hubbert Sloan score was a defensive touchdown, it was an
interception return for a score, and sometimes once again, you
got to give the defense a lot of credit. And
as much as it what a lot of people thinks
don't understand, this is a Hobert team at this group.
I believe, if I'm not mistaken, this group was one
in six or one in seven when they were rushman.
(31:00):
So this senior class that did what it did even
to win the sectional and to get into a position
where a regional totos to those kids for battling back
and making some plays. But you know about you know,
there are things that happened behind the scene. A lot
of people don't understand the dynamics. And I'll give you
a case in point in the game that I did
last night between Michigan City and Maryville. You know, Marravel's
(31:23):
in a situation where you know, they're taking out a
team in Michigan City that did offensively just terrific four
hundred and twenty nine yards of offense during the course
of the season per game for Michigan City. So all
Marrable does is punch them in the face, and they
held Michigan City to one hundred and forty four yards
the total offense for a whole football game. And if
(31:45):
you're doing if you're able to shut people down in
that capacity, you know you're moving on. And we saw
some of those things last night, But we also saw
some of the crazy things like that Carol and Penn game.
This is one thousand and fifty yards combined between those
two teams. I know, Gabe the quarterback was amazing four
hundred and thirty two yards with two touchdowns, and he
(32:07):
also ran twenty three times for ninety one yards. So
there were some really neat and exciting situations, some land
land breaking moments for of those. But I think what
we're setting up for the final four coming up on Friday,
November twenty first, is going to be a football lover's
dreams because just like we just like we will talk about,
(32:29):
you know, next Friday and next Saturday, respectively, we're going
to have a two. We're going to have a two
a field where the number one, number two, number three,
and number four ranked teams are all still alive and
too how often does that happen?
Speaker 5 (32:44):
Right?
Speaker 1 (32:44):
Never?
Speaker 3 (32:46):
And that is what makes this game special.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Hey, Paul, I need you to hang on school board
upneck coming up, So hang on and we'll come back
and talk more. Football. Will also squeeze in a little
bit of basketball here with us talking about high school
football on Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
I'm Brendan King with this Network Indiana scoreboard update here
on Indiana Sports Talk. Last one of the night. We
gotta tell you what's coming up on your sports Sunday
and your NFL slate.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
Now it will be.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
Without Indianapolis Colts football, as Indianapolis enjoys a rest after
beating the Falcons in Germany thirty one to twenty five.
They'll be back in action in Kansas City next week,
and then their next home game is on the thirtieth
against the Houston Texans. That's the same weekend as the
ISHSAA football state finals, So the Colts enjoying a little
bit of R and R. But a full NFL Sunday
(33:41):
commences either way, and it starts in the morning nine
to thirty am kick from Madrid, Spain. The Dolphins host
the Commanders out there in Europe, and then at one
o'clock Stateside the Falcons. They do not get a bye
after their game in Germany against the Colts, they're at
home taking on the Panthers. Also clock kick, Buccaneers take
(34:01):
on the Bills, Texans and the Titans in the AFC.
South from Nashville is a one o'clock kickoff. Bears face
the Vikings up in Minnesota. It's the Packers at the
Giants in New York at one. One o'clock, the Bengals
take on the Steelers, and the Chargers face off with
the Jaguars in Jacksonville. Brian Thomas, star wide receiver for Jacksonville,
(34:22):
listed as questionable after missing the last couple of games
for the Jags. Four o'clock, Windows starts with the Seahawks
and the Rams. Cooper Cup returns to La Also four o'clock,
it's the forty nine Ers and the Cardinals. Jacoby Prisett
starts again for Arizona. Ravens face the Browns at four
to twenty five. Same time for the Chiefs and the Broncos.
Sunday Night Football has the Lions visiting the Eagles. On
(34:44):
Monday Night from Vegas, it's the Raiders and the Cowboys.
Have a great weekend. I'm Brendan King.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports Talk. We continue
our conversation with Paul Condrey from the regional radio Sports
Network in the Indiana Football Died jes all right, Paul, uh,
any any other comments about last night? As we wrap
it up, we'll.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
Get rid of looking at the field, salfs this weekend.
Speaker 6 (35:09):
The field, uh, You've.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
Got a really terrific Westfield team who is Uh, you know,
I I'm really really excited for Josh Merrill. He's a
hover kid and I'm so excited to him for a
kid you will watch grow up to be able to
be in a position where he's at right now, excited
about what he's going to have a chance to do.
But they're going to be taking on a forwarding Carol
team who certainly has shown that they can move the ball,
(35:32):
Warren Central Brownsburg. Can John Hard do it again?
Speaker 4 (35:37):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (35:37):
He was so special last year in five minute concord
at Maryville. This is an interesting situation, Merrivilli. Just they
seem to find ways to lose games in the semi
state level. They have a great opportunity. Tell them have
they had the semi state championship game at their place?
So Bloomington South at newpal Boy, Newpal I heard Andrew
Smith's report last night on The Big Show and a
(35:58):
New pal football team. This seems to have another year
South Bend Saint Joe at Dwinger, a big Catholic matchup,
Heritage Hills at Ron Colly. I know those two teams
met at some point in time. I think it was
right around the turn of the century. I heard one
of the guys on The Big Show last night. Yeah,
you got some great guests on the Big Show. I
want to say that thank you. You know, it's some
of the guys that do call in and just tremendous.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
But that should be a really good game.
Speaker 3 (36:21):
I like heritage shows. But Ron Colly, anytime you can
beat Shatar in a football season, you're a pretty good
football team. Three A, we got Knox at Lures Gibbs,
the Southern unbeaten Cascade. That's another unique since Cinderella stor
Adam Central at Andrean Boy, Andrean is ornery, Adam Central's
got to go to fifty nine to fifty nine Broadery
(36:41):
and the Muck and the Mire. If that fields wet,
it could be a long night for both teams. Browns
down Central and Lapel a pair of un beatens in
that one. And finally, Adam Barry, who picked up his
one hundred career win his team twelve and one is
going to be taking on South Adams and then South
Putts at Myland as the Cinderella Slipper. The question is
will it fits. I think Chuck Sorels guys will probably
(37:03):
have a few things to say about that. So that's
going to be what we're looking at next Friday, and
now onto basketball. It was a good night and on
Mike Lightfoot Court as the Pilot's improved a five and
oh on the season coach, as they were able to
upend Saint Xavier out of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
A big win for BU to improve to five and
(37:23):
oh on the season, which is setting up their first
conference matchup against Marion on Wednesday. Marion comes to Mishawaka
to take on the Pilots, and it should be you know,
once again you get into the cross Roads League. As
you will know you've played all the teams in the
cross Roads League. You to me know this as well
as anybody it's never been around this game. But the
(37:45):
Pilots once again as they were a year ago, loaded
with guys and they had six guys in double figures.
Jamiir Jefferson came off the bench. He played sixteen minutes. Bob,
he had twenty one points and ten rebounds and two
assests in sixteen minutes of action. So Jamir electrifying player
not even starting on this team. That everybody there's the
(38:08):
top six guys Bob are averaging the double figures and
this is the tam with great balance. They can shoot
the basketball, They're shooting them free throws better. They're rebounding
their opponents in every contest. And maryon coach Pat Knight
and Mike mcbriden. Those guys. They better get those guys
ready to go because the pouncer ranked fifteenth in the
country and they're playing with a lot of confidence right now.
Speaker 1 (38:32):
Busiest man on the planet. Paul Condrey doing basketball Football
our show podcast. He does it all. Paul, thanks so
much for all you do for football in the state
and what you do for Indiana sports talk and me.
Thank you so much. Have a fantastic weekend.
Speaker 5 (38:52):
Great to be with you.
Speaker 3 (38:53):
Coach, thanks for asking cover us.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
Thank you, Paul. Paul Condrey, He's tremendous. He does all right,
Brendan King, catch me up. What's going on late here,
late in the evening. Tough day for Purdue that was
not not at all what we expected this evening out
at Washington.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Yeah, tough day, tough Big ten season, coach, I mean
eight and the Big ten it's you know, it's become
a number that's kind of becoming a dark Cloud over
wes Lafayette right now. So hey, you know, they only
have a couple more opportunities, and one of them is
the biggest of them all in the Bucket game coming
up two weeks from now.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
All right, hang in here, short break, will be back.
This is Indiana Sports. Welcome back everyone, This is Indiana's
sports song. Great job, Brendan King as always great to
have you back. I got your coach, great to listen to.
You do your thing, your Irish win. That's the good
(39:53):
thing about the weekend.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
Yeah, and they looked pretty good doing it. Obviously, the
first career multi interception game for CJ. Carr. But if
you can beat a team by twenty two in the process,
that's a pretty good sign. Especially it's a ranked pit
team on the road. So I think it was an
encouraging day. And hey, we've talked about it coached since
the first two weeks of the season. It's really been
a look in the mirror identical thing last year. Right,
(40:17):
it's surviving advance and that's exactly what you know, Texas.
You know, I'm watching the Texas Georgia game here in
the studio. You know, Texas has two losses and they
are gonna get beat by double digits today at Georgia,
so that can very well put you know, Texas's college
football playoff hopes to bed. And they were the number
one ranked team in the country to start the season,
(40:38):
so I think it just goes to show ye you
never know. And I'll tell you Coach Notre Dame at
eight and two with Syracuse and Stanford left to play,
I think that's pretty encouraging if you're a Notre Dame fan.
But listen, at the end of the day, nothing is
guaranteed in this game, and you know you're gonna have
to come to play against the Orange next week at home,
and then you know, Stanford historically has never been an
(40:58):
easy game for the Irish.
Speaker 1 (41:00):
Long way to go, Long Way to Go, But I
like their chances. I think it's it's impressive. And speaking
of impressive, Hoosiers, you know, just another day at the
office type of game and they're win over Wisconsin, and
who's up next for the Hoosiers.
Speaker 2 (41:17):
Well, they'll go on by so we'll Purdue and then
it's the Bucket game on Friday, the twenty eighth coach
in West Lafayette, right, you know what you know We
just talked about it before the break. You know, Purdue,
they're winless in the Big Ten, and if to avoid
an zero to nine marker in the Big Ten this season,
they're gonna have to overcome not only their biggest rival,
but arguably the best team in the nation. So you know,
(41:39):
Burdho's gonna have their handsful. I guess the benefit benefit
for them is they'll be at ross Aid at home.
But you know, I think it goes to show what
Indiana did today over Wisconsin. Respected their opponent, went out
played and succeeded. And you know that's that's Kurt Signetti
in a nutshell if there ever is one.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
Right, All right, Pacers, tough loss, Still banged up at
Detroit on Monday, Colts have the weekend. You know how,
notice how different life feels when the Colts have a
bye week Some believer seems I mean, no, true, it's
way different. It's it's just it's a different thing, quite honestly.
(42:19):
And we're creeping. Are you involved in the IHSA State
finals this year?
Speaker 3 (42:24):
Ah?
Speaker 2 (42:25):
Yes, sir, I'll be calling the two way state championship coach,
So looking forward to being on the radio there and
then I'll get more details will be at IHSA dot org.
But y'all all have the two way radio call looking
forward to it.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
How cool is that. I'm happy for you. I think
it's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
Thanks Gaug. Yeah, it's always enjoyable getting to work with
my friend Jim Leisure. You know, he is as good
as a color guy and the biz as there is. Yeah,
it comes to and Jim and I are gonna have
the chance. Jim and I will be doing the Indiana
State football game next weekend against Murray State, so we'll
get a chance to get cooking a little bit, get
the tries flowing, and then we'll be uh, we'll be
on the air for the state titles.
Speaker 1 (43:02):
Great job, Brendan King, Great job, Caleb Zuver. I want
to thank our great stations around the state bringing the
SHEW every Friday and Saturday night. Thanks to all of
you for making us the most listened to sports songs
in state's history. It is the history making legendary network
Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk
