Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back everyone. This is Network Indiana's Indiana Sports staff.
Coming up. We're gonna talk later on in the hour
with Paul Condry talking about high school football week number
five and then looking ahead the week six. Brendan King
will join me talk a little more football with Notre Dame,
and we'll continue to talk about the Hoosiers and their
(00:22):
dismantling of Illinois. Right now, right now, though, we turn
it back over to the star of our show. It's
Network Indiana's Eddie Garrison.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Thank you, coach Lovell. Let's start this update by previewing
some things that are going on tomorrow. We'll start with
at one o'clock the Indianapolis Colts. They're on the road,
looking to go three and ozero for the first time
since two thousand and nine. It's the first road contest
of the season against division of foe. The Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Got a lot of respect for Dinard Wilson, their decoordinator,
had a chance to be with him in Philly, aggressive style,
attacking defense, multiple looks. Got a good front starts up
front with ninety eight Simmons. He's one of the best
in the league. Got to control him as much as possible.
Sneeds a hell of a player on defense as well,
So I think they do a lot of good things defensively.
(01:08):
I think offensively they can run the ball really well.
I think Paulard's an explosive back. I think the quarterback's
very talented. He can move around, make plays off platforms.
So we've got to have great rush lanes come Sunday
against him, because he made a ton of plays a
little bit with his legs already. He made a third
and goal at the nine against the Rams, running around
Bom and threw it back across his body, which was.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
A hell of a play.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
So we got doing a good job containing him.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
That's Indianapolis Colts head coach Sane Steigan. Kickoff at one
o'clock Eastern. The injury report for the Indianapolis Colts is clean.
That of course changed earlier today. Traverius Ward had not
been cleared by the independent neurologist through the NFL's concussion protocol.
He has now since been cleared. He has off the
(01:53):
injury report. Tyler Warren was limited in practice on Thursday
and Friday with a tow injury. He is now off
the injury reports. So the Colts are healthy going into
week number three. At three o'clock tomorrow, the Indiana Fever
or in the w NBA semi Finals against the Las
Vegas Aces. Game one of what could be a five
(02:14):
game series between the Fever and Aces will start at
three o'clock. Last two. The last time these two teams
played was on July the twenty fourth. Indiana won that game,
but since then, Las Vegas has gone twenty and three.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
I think Number one, their physicality on defense. You know,
they're they're really active. They're doing a lot of different
things on the defensive end of the floor, but really
taking pride in that area. Number Two, just the way
the ball's moving and the way that they're they're knocking
down shots. I mean, obviously they are a different team
than the last time that we played them. They're playing
like the championship caliber team that you know them to be.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
That's Fever head coach Stephan you Wind explaining what's different
about that time when Indiana played them, they were twelve
and twelve the Aces compared to now three o'clock Eastern Tomorrow,
ABC will have the television coverage between the Fever and
the Aces in game number one. College Football Today the
Notre Dame Fighting I was sure on the board with
a win. They took on the Purdue University Bulleymakers earlier today,
(03:14):
Purdue two and two and Barry Odoms first year. Fifty
six to thirty was the final score. Jeremiah Love one
hundred and fifty six yards on the ground, two rushing
touchdowns to Darien Price found the end zone three times
on just nine carries. Purdue's Ryan Brown two hundred and
fifty yards passing, a passing touchdown and a receiving touchdown
(03:34):
from Devin Macabee. He also threw one interception. Next up
for Notre Dame, they were on the road taking on
the Arkansas Razorbacks, kickoff at noon Eastern. As for Purdue,
they will be on a bye week next week, and
then they will return to West Lafayette to take on
number nine Illinois. Assuming that is not the case, it'll
(03:55):
be a different ranking for the Fighting A LINEI after
being down by Kurt Signetti's crew today sixty three to ten.
Fernando Mendoza two hundred and sixty seven yards passing and
five touchdowns. Elijah Sarant nine receptions ninety two yards, two
receiving scores. Indiana rushed for three hundred and twelve yards.
(04:18):
As a team, Kobe Martin over one hundred yards. He
had one hundred and seven and two rushing scorts for Illinois.
They are now three and one oh and one in
the Big Ten. Indiana is a perfect four and oh
one and own the Big Ten. Next up for the
Hoosiers are the IBA Hawkeyes next week for Network Indiana Sports.
I'm Medi Garrison.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Welcome back everyone. I'm Bob Lovell. In the midst of
all the football baseball still going on in minor league
baseball for the Indianapolis Indians, going on. Good win for
the Indians, five to three winners over Gwynett with me
to talk about that and all things baseball related. The Hall,
(05:00):
the longtime legendary voice of the Indianapolis Indians, remember of
the Indiana Sports Writers and Sports Casters Hall of Fame
and the good guy Hall of Fame, the legendary Howard Kilman. Hello, Howard, Bob.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
How you doing? And the Indians, as you said, one
again and they now are finishing up in a real
positive way there. They've won seven of their last eight
and the final game of the season is tomorrow. So
a five to three victory tonight. Good pitching again. But Bob,
there's another story here too besides the victory, and that
(05:34):
is Nick Solak. Nick Solak the Indians team MVP. He's
trying to become the first Indianapolis Indians since nineteen eighty
nine to win a batting title. Wow Junior de Voet
one in ninety nine. Here's the situation coming in. He's
batting three point thirty three, a point away from the
(05:59):
league lead. Justin Crawford of Lehigh Valley leaving the league
at three point thirty four. Now Crawford's been hurt. Crawfords
hasn't played in almost three weeks, although he has enough
plate appearance follow them. So it's up to Solo. Had
he gone two for four, and he almost did that,
(06:21):
he would have been in the league league with one
day to go.
Speaker 6 (06:24):
He was one.
Speaker 5 (06:25):
He was one for three. He came up in the eighth,
Innic slowly hit ground ball along the first base line.
The picture hurried over and dropped it. Well, I think
that's more than an ordinary effort by error.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Just what I'm saying. You didn't get a break from
the road statistician, Yikes.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
That's it. It's hometown scoring right, and had he gotten
that ben a base hit, he would have been a
fraction of a percentage point ahead of Justin Crawford of
Lehigh Valley. So Nick came up in the ninth inning
and he's struck out right. So now going into tomorrow,
(07:10):
he needs a two for two or a three for
five to win the batting title. So if he goes
two for two, he wins it, or he goes three
for five.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Man, oh man, well you know what win or not.
What a fantastic season, and so he should be incredibly
proud of I know everyone in the organization proud for him.
You just hope he I hope he goes four for
four and leaves no doubt about it.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Well, I think, though, if he goes two for two,
they might pull him.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, yeah, I would.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
I would find nothing wrong with taking him out of
the game, because remember Crawford hasn't played in almost three weeks, right,
he's kind of cat. But you're right, Bob, he's had
a fantastic season. Twenty two doubles, fourteen homers, seventy two
runs batted in. Thirty year old veteran got a brief
cup of coffee with Pittsburgh this year, he's been consistently
(08:08):
terrific and it's been great to watch him.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
It'd be hard not to believe that someone wouldn't, you know,
including the Pirates won him on their major league roster
with what he's been able to do.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
Yes, and the Pirates did call him up for a
brief period of time, but he didn't play much and
then they outrighted him back a year veteran player. But
you're hoping that someone will give him a chance because
he's a very good player. He also runs pretty well,
ten stolen bases, plays a lot of different positions, so
he's versatile. Played first base tonight, So hopefully he gets
(08:42):
a chance next season in the major leagues.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Well, Howard, I'm going to miss our discussions on Friday
and Saturday. But Indians had a really solid year and
as always I've enjoyed it. And when Indians win five three,
what about tomorrow's.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Game final game of the season beginning one o'clock, and
the big story, of course, will be Nick Solak. The
Indians more than twenty games above five hundred, a great year.
As you said, Bob, they went fifty and twenty five
at home. But you have to finish first out of
twenty five teams, which was very hard. Right, I didn't fit.
(09:17):
It's first, so they don't make the postseason.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
He's in the Hall of Fame for a reason. He's
the best at what he does. Howard Kelman always great
to talk to. You have a great.
Speaker 5 (09:25):
Weekend, Bob as always, Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Howard, Howard Kelman. Last time we're talking about baseball and
we take a fuck a little bit more. Brendan King's
gonna call us here in just a few minutes to
talk some more. All right, Eddie, what's up with the Hoosiers?
They still got the foot on the pedal.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
No, it's over. It's finally over, finally over. Yeah, the
carnage is.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
If you're an Illini fan, you're thankful that the carnage
has ended. What's the final?
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Sixty three to ten?
Speaker 1 (09:56):
Yikes? Yeahs my goodness. And then Iowa next week, right
for the Hoosiers.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yes, on the road.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
Yeah, sixty three to ten. Wiw Eddie perfect. Eddi's coming
up with another school board update, and stay with us.
This is Indiana Sports Suck.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
With this Indiana Sports Talk schoolboard update, I'm Ati Garrison.
Let's recap some of the Major League Baseball scores today
the season winding down. The Atlanta Braves in the Detroit
Tigers were the first game on the schedule, six to
five win for the Braves. They are having an underwhelming
season sixty two and eighty three Detroit eighty five and
(10:38):
seventy Following the loss, more on that in a matter
of moments. One extra innings game to report on the
Milwaukee Brewers and the Saint Louis Cardinals. They went ten
innings and it was a three to two final, with
the Milwaukee Brewers picking up their ninety fifth win of
the season Bryce Terrain with an RBI single that played
at Jackson Curio. The Saint Louis Cardinals cannot answer at
(10:59):
the bottom half of the tenth inning. Saint Louis five
games under five hundred and seventy five and eighty Milwaukee
ninety five and sixty. The Cleveland Guardians pick up the
eighty fourth win of the season after shutting out the
Minnesota Twins eight to nothing. More on them in a moment.
Logan Allen eight innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out seven.
The San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago White Sox today
(11:21):
seven to three. The Cincinnati Reds, who are in a
race for that final All Star spot or the inn
a wildcard spot in the National League six to three
win over the Chicago Cubs. They will go for the
four game series sweep tomorrow at Great American Ballpark. Division
standings right now in the American League in the Central
(11:42):
the Detroit Tigers have a one game advantage over the
Cleveland Guardians. In the American League Wildcard, Cleveland and Houston
are tied for that final spot, so it's those two
teams clinging for that third spot. In the National League,
Chicago has a four game advantage or an eight game
advantage on Sango Padres over four game advantage over the
(12:02):
Mets Reds, one game behind New York.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
Welcome back everyone, Rob Blackman joins me from the Purdue
Radio Network. Boilers lose at to Notre Dame today, the
final in this one fifty six thirty. Rob, thanks so
much for the call. I think there were some bright
spots in this loss, but a difficult one. None.
Speaker 6 (12:26):
Nonetheless, Yeah, produe teams to really have found something in
the passing game. Yeah, through the first four games of
the season. Another three hundred yard passing day for Purdue offensively,
which is kind of becoming the norm for Purdue, at
least it has been through these first four weeks. So yes,
lots to like about that if you're a Purdue fan.
(12:48):
The problem is running the football today. That was the
story of the game. I don't know what the final
numbers ended up being, but I do know with about
five minutes to go in the game, Notre Dame had
run for two hundred and fififty some yards Perdue had
run for fifty mm hm. So while Purdue was winning
the statistical advantage in the pass game, Notre Dame was
(13:08):
making up for it in buckets with their ability to
run the football and less control the clock. So yeah,
really really excited about what Purdue, all of a sudden's
doing offensively in the past game. But I'm gonna have
to get better in the run game and certainly need
to be better defensively. I mean, and look, Notre Dame
is a very good team, top twenty five team, and right,
(13:29):
they have a lot of weapons, a lot of weapons offensively,
but boy, when you give up fifty six points, so
that's that's a tough one to swallow. So still still
plenty of work to go for this young, very new
looking Purdue football team. But yeah, as you said, I
think there are some bright spots that Fordue can build on.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Here here's the problem. They pick up a Notre Dame
team coming off a loss, you know, and now and
now have to play Illinois after getting humiliate. So I
mean I believed this for a long long time during
my career. I always believed it wasn't who you played,
it was win and where. And here's a perfect example
(14:09):
of it with.
Speaker 6 (14:11):
That question, and kind of the same scenario. Last year.
Purdue fans will remember Notre Dame had just lost at
home to Northern Illinois and Notre Dame came to West
Lafayette and absolutely embarrassed Purdue. Kind of similar situation as
you said today. You know, Notre Dame had not won
a game they were zeroing to it, just had a
(14:31):
really deflating home loss in Texas A and M last Saturday.
And yeah, Fordue just caught Notre Dame at the wrong time,
no doubt about that. And like you said, after what
happened to Illinois tonight against Indiana, Uh, you know, Purdue
will play Illinois in two weeks, produce by week next week.
But boy, yeah, you you like to think Illinois probably
(14:52):
going to come in on edge here in two weeks.
So you're right, not not not who you played, but
when you play him, and Redue's not having a whole
lot of luck in that category right now.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Yeah, but I still look, I mean, it's a long year.
But if they continue to get to play they're getting
at the quarterback spot and continue to move the ball
like they are defensively, they'll start to put some things together.
But you have to be encouraged when you're when your
trigger man is playing and playing well. You have to
like your football team absolutely.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
And I think it's also fair to you know, look
the last two losses here, the last last two weeks
to top twenty five teams and you have to see
a Notre Dame and they're two teams that are just
chocked full of NFL talent, I mean just talent oozing
out of their too deep roster. U Purdue cannot say
the same. Now, Purdue has some good players, certainly not
(15:41):
full not full of NFL prospects like USC and Notre
Dame have, so uh that that that is encouraging to
know you're doing good things against high caliber competition, but
this is the big ten that it doesn't get any
easier starting with Illinois in two weeks. But yeah one again.
Like I said, the fact produce loss to the row,
(16:02):
But if you look at it objectively, I think you
really do feel like produced thinking steps in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
What am I gonna do next weekend without you?
Speaker 6 (16:12):
Well, my wife has already told me that we're gonna
take a trip somewhere to get away from from from
west loviat. So I don't even know what I'm doing,
but it sounds like I won't be. I won't be,
I won't be close byes.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Okay, well, I'll try to muddle through without you. Rob
Blackman from the Produced Sports Network Boilers lose to Notre
Dame fifty six thirty off next week. Rob, thanks, have
a great weekend, have a great time while you're off. Okay,
all right, we will, Bob, Thank you, thank you. The
Brendan King joins US Scoreboard Update expert, last night's star
(16:50):
of our show. He'll be back with us next weekend. Everyone.
Brendan King, thanks so much for the call. You're irish.
There must be joy in South En right now, Irish
get a much needed win. They're in, they're already in
playoff mode with the mindset of you cannot lose.
Speaker 7 (17:09):
It's pretty amazing when you think about it. Right, Like
we talked about last year, where it's not the direct
equivalent is last year where you and Rob were just
talking about that Northern Illinois loss. But at the end
of the day, you're coming off losses that you probably
should have won both games and just for whatever reason,
not able to pull it off for one reason or another.
So I think today coach is a great step in
(17:30):
the right direction. Watching the game early though, how about
Barry Odom's bag of tricks in the first quarter, the
playse play to the QB for a touchdown. I mean
that was super impressive. But hey, at the end of
the day, Notre Dame did what they did best, and
that's you know, when Jaderian Price needs a rest, Jeremiah
Love comes in. When the reverse is said, Price comes in,
(17:51):
it's almost like the mind shuffle at running back for
Notre Dame, and they've got two of the best backs
in the country. It just so happens they're in the
same exact room. So I think Marcus Freeman and Crewe
did exactly what they needed to in terms of planning
an attack against They very much improved but still gettable
produ team.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Yeah, and it's a and we talked about this earlier
with doctor Lynn Clark. I mean, it clearly is reminiscent
of last year in terms of how this has played out.
And I made the comment, I said, you, look, let's
be honest, if you if you're a Notre Dame player, coach, fan, everybody,
(18:30):
they don't you're not allowed to lose a game anyway.
I mean, so, now, those are the expectations that you're
going to run the table every year and play for
a national championship and anything shorter that's not a successful season.
Speaker 7 (18:43):
Well, and those expectations have been that way for a
long time. But I think one key caveat that we
talked about last night, coach was the fact that a
year ago, you remember, Riley Leonard got off to a
really difficult start as Notre Dame's quarterback. A year ago,
he did not play well per se in that Texas
A and M game on the road, and then he
was miserable in that Northern Illinois game. Now, Riley Leonard
improved and he took you to the national championship. But
(19:05):
one constant this season, coach, there has never been a
question about CJ.
Speaker 8 (19:09):
Carr.
Speaker 7 (19:09):
In the Miami game and then game and especially today,
that first play of the game on the option play
and then the gun downfield.
Speaker 9 (19:18):
That was gorgeous.
Speaker 8 (19:19):
I mean, CJ.
Speaker 7 (19:19):
Carr, you asked a guy in his third collegiate start
to go make that play to start a ball game.
I don't think many quarterbacks, especially in their first year
around the country, are going to be able to go
do something like that as accurate as that throw was too.
So I think that's one key difference from a year ago,
where I haven't had a single question to this point
about CJ.
Speaker 9 (19:39):
Carr.
Speaker 7 (19:39):
He has thrown a couple of picks, but you gotta
remember his three collegiate starts, and compared to Riley Leonard,
who was in his final year of eligibility, I would
say Cars outplayed him. So that's why I think Notre
Dame fans should be not confident, but at least comfortable
at this point that, hey, you know what, there has
not been a question about this kid. You lost the
first two games by combined four points, and you did
(20:00):
what you did today against Purdue. Now you've got to
replicate that for the next three months. That's easier said
than done. But at least so far as CJ. Car
has passed every singleing back.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Well, I don't know that their schedule is easy, but
they're at Arkansas next week, Boise State comes into South Bend,
North Carolina State, Southern cal you know the drills, So yeah,
they can they continue it, obviously all contingent upon staying
injury free at certain spots, but schedule becomes their friend
(20:34):
in his next few it seems.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
Well that and you're also going to need some help, coach.
I mean, I know for a fact a lot of
Notre Dame fans were rooting heavy for Arkansas today in
that Memphis game. Arkansas loses, you know, the Irish are
not only going to need the help of some of
these top ten and top twenty five right to to lose,
but they're also going to need the help of the
(20:58):
rest of their schedule at have a pretty good year.
And you know, I was around Boise State football a
little bit back when I worked out there. That town
lives in Breeze on Broncos football, So that's not going
to be an easy path. And then USC did the
Burdue last week. So again, as you said, it's not easy,
but it's favorable, and you're also going to need some
of these teams to get hot in October and November.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
All right, you've made my weekend. You were on the
school board anchor desk. You're back. You're back again this
coming weekend. Correct. Mm hmm.
Speaker 7 (21:29):
You bat Saturday night, so I can.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
I can just relax now and I'll be able to
sleep at night knowing that everything is under control.
Speaker 7 (21:38):
I'm glad I make you feel that way. Brendan King, Brendan, thanks,
have a great weekend, Hi, coach, take care.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
Coming up, Paul Condrey will join me. We'll take a
look at high school football last night and next Friday night.
That's all coming up after the school board update with
Eddie Garrison.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Second to last update of the night. So let's cap
the college football scores from today. Number nineteen Indiana demolishes
number nine Illinois sixty three to ten. The Hoosiers run
for over three hundred yards of offerense and three touchdowns.
Fronado Mendoza passes for five in IU sixty three to
ten win. Next up for the Hoosiers. They were on
(22:19):
the road next week against the Iowa Hawkeys. You just
heard Rob Blackman recap the Purdue loss to Notre Dame
fifty six to thirty. Jeremiah Love one hundred and fifty
six yards rushing, two rushing scores, Jadarien Price three rushing
touchdowns on nine kerries. Next up for the fighting hours.
Brendan King just touched on it at Arkansas against the
(22:40):
Razorbacks at noon Eastern. Purdue off, and then they have
Illinois at Westlafiet on October the fourth. The ball State
Cardners fell on the road to Yukon today, thirty one
to twenty five. Ko Kelly had a passing score and
a receiving touchdown from Mike Yurimovich's team. Next up, bye
week for them as well. Then they on the Ohio
(23:00):
Bobcats on October the fourth at noon Eastern. The Indiana
State Sycamores fell to Montana today, sixty three to twenty.
Montana one of the best teams number five in the FCS,
and the grizz are four and other Sycamores are two
and two. Just going final the Butler Bulldogs. I guess
there's three minutes left but the Bulldogs still trailing against
(23:22):
Weavers Sate thirty to seventeen. That's in the final quarter
of play for Butler. University of Indianapolis picked up a
win today forty seven to nineteen over the McKendree Bearcats.
Manchester lost fifty seven to nothing to Andrean, Indiana. Wesleyan
squeaks out to win over Olivant Nazarene twenty eight to
twenty seven. For Network Indiana Sports, I'm Middi Garrison.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Lovel. This is Indiana Sports
Talk one to night. Last night. The weather continues to
be stellar. Had a little rain in the southern part
of the state last night, but for the most part,
decent weather, some great games. Always fun to take a
look at what's going on with all of that, and
as we do on Saturday nights, it is that time
(24:06):
for our conversation with the man himself, the Hall of Famer.
He's in the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, Indiana Sports
Areas and Sportscasters Hall of Fame, Founder creator the Indiana
Football Digest, publisher of the Indiana Football Digest, founder of
the Regional Radio Sports Network. And if there's a Hall
(24:27):
of Fame for good guys. He's at the top of
the list. The one and only Paul Condrey joins a
Sollo Paul Hey, coach.
Speaker 9 (24:34):
Great to be with you, wrapping up Week number five,
and obviously you're at the midway point. We're excited. I
know that this time of the year, we've got some
conference races. We're starting to see a little bit of
distance beew for some of the teams. And you know,
this is kind of a unique week number five because
there's some things happening around the state, some programs that
that have been traditionally not very good and or certainly
(24:57):
have had its woes. I can use that terminology. It's
starting to do some special things. And I know that
we've you know, we've talked about that. I'm excited to
see teams get off the schneid, if you will. The
teams get they get mired in these losing streaks, and
you know, so things like Irvington prep ending it's nineteen
game losing streak, Eastern Peaking snapping their fourteen game losing streak,
(25:21):
and then on the other side of that things you
look at Riverton Park five and oh, for the first
time in school's history, Scottsburg about them. Five and oh
for the first time since nineteen seventy four, Springs Valley
so off to an incredible start, five and oh for
the first time since regional radio sports was born thirty
some odd years ago. North Davies five and oh for
(25:42):
the first time. And we go on and on and off.
So it's good to see those kind of things. And
you know, conversy, we're also seeing some unusual trendses. You've
got some teams that quite frankly, you and I have
talked about as world beaters, if you will, on this
program for many many years not doing so well, like
New per oh and five or Buff Jesuit oh and five,
some teams that we've talked about being really really special.
(26:05):
But the rich are getting richer, the Adam Central's, the
New Pals, the Heritage Hills, the Brownsburgs just keep doing
what they do and those kinds of situations. But I
think there's nothing more. I think, you know, last week
with Nick Stroud of Crawford County winning the Colts Coach
of the Week, what a really unique story, you know
for that that program. Once again we're talking about a
(26:27):
week ago, but that's a program that had never won
three games in a row. Think about that. The program
has been around since about seven or so. But they're
in a situation where they had won, uh, you know,
three games in our own and of course they followed
it up last night with a win. So now they're
four and one, and you know, those are the kind
of stories that you and I quite frankly, as former
(26:47):
ball coaches, we understand that, Hey, it's it's not over
until the fat guy or the old guys get up inside.
Because no, that's what makes high school sports special. I
think that's what we're seeing. That's that's a trend that
I can always feel happy about, is when you see
things like that happen, because that's at the core of
what we like to do. Because whether you're stuck in
(27:08):
the middle of a losing streak or things are not
going your way, how your student athletes bounce back and
be competitive and do things, that's what's neat And so
that's kind of where I'm thinking at the midway point
the season. I don't know if there was a game
or performance last night that just jumped off the page.
I know four eight took some hits. Yea four ranked
teams going down and Leo Penalton Heights. Hobert got smacked
(27:31):
around by and Ran. That doesn't always do Paul, Country's
hard very well. Columbia City also reserved, but it was
it was a pretty good night for high school football. Otherwise,
as you alluded to, and as we you know, kind
of hit the back turn here, we'll be talking about
some conference championships. But the game that really kind of
jumped off the page at me was up here in
(27:54):
the North with because I talked with some to Bark
Curtis this morning, his team got absolutely splatter all over
the wall, if I could use that terminology by Concord
last night. A really good Concord team, but Bart Curtis
doesn't lose games like they lost last night. Concord with
a monster went thirty eight to seven at Warsaw. And
(28:16):
this is a Concord team that doesn't have a home
field because it's played underfield Urt, so they've been playing
all over at different fields. And so I was a
big win for Concord last night over Warsaw.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
Big win. I think to your earlier point, it's hard
to win, Paul. I think we all you and I
understand that coaches understand it is I don't care who,
what level, what sport, it is hard to win. And
for teams to put on these streaks and have sustained
success is not an easy thing to do. And you
(28:48):
love the people who are able to break through and
begin to find some success. So that's my two cents worth,
and I'm with you. I share your thoughts on many
of this. I look around, look up and down at
these scores, and you know that there are plenty that
surprise you, and not so much in terms of exactly
who won, who beat whom, but you know, for example,
(29:12):
you look, you look at the Carmel win over Columbus
North fifty sixty seven. Who sees that score coming?
Speaker 5 (29:18):
Well, you know we were weird.
Speaker 9 (29:20):
You and I had talked about this, and I think
I know our staff did. When Kevin Wright came back
into the coaching room, right, I told everybody on my team,
I says, you know, the days of Carmel being an afterthought,
those have come and gone, and they are now the
way of the Dodo, because that is not going to
happen anymore. Kevin writes, A terrific football coach with his
(29:40):
lineage as well as his experience at the college level.
His experienced at that was at a high school level.
That's out of surprise, and as a matter of fact,
I would be so bold as they could run the table.
And they've got some good football teams on the back
end of the statue with Ben Davis and Warren and
Laurence Central on there already. I mean, they took Westfield
(30:02):
out the school in week two. And I heard you
on with Josh Miracle last night. That's a really good
Westfield team ended up beating HSC last night.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
Same thing with New Palan and Pendleton Heights.
Speaker 9 (30:15):
Yeah, once again Pendleton Heights. And I heard your ironic,
I heard your conversation with the legendary Andrew Smith last
night and just does a formaal job doing everything that
he does. And you know, they're playing their best football.
And of course we've seen this before when when that
group hassed talent. They're a really, really, really talented team.
(30:38):
And I think Kyle Rayelf, I think he's what lost
maybe what thirteen fourteen games last career in sieteen years,
and so hey, that dude knows how to win. And
they're just running robshot over everybody, and they're not going
to lose a regular season game. They're going to be
going into Sectional thirteen and they're going to get in there.
They'll flex their muscles and they're the one thing that's
(30:58):
in their way, quite frankly, is Cathedrals in the same
section all with them and Plainfield. I know Plainfield's having
a great year. I know you're pranked about that, but
you know, at New Pal, I mean, they potentially could
draw a Plainfield and Cathedral team in Sexual thirteen, and
my goodness that those are two good teams that could
potential get to the state championship game. But I still
(31:22):
believe New Pal's got all the talent in the world,
and I think they're going to be a really, really
difficult team to play against once they get into the
postseason as well, because they're loaded in every position.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Paul Conrey with us we're talking about high school football
from last night. I just think that you continue to
look at it and we're at that point of the
year where as cliched as it is, let me toss
it out anyway, you're separating the pretenders from the contenders.
You're finding out who the good teams are. He had
an idea. I think, as you pointed out earlier, there
(31:55):
are there have been some teams on great runs Scottsburg, Springs, Valley, North,
Davison Park, Irvington, prip those kinds of schools, But still
we're in conference play continues to be a grind to
win ball games. And I know we're going to talk
about the schedule, but you know, there's some really really
difficult circumstances coming up next week. With some great wins
(32:18):
last night, and there were you know, the Brendan King
our school board update extraordinary last night. Kept talking about
the number of shutouts that were pitched last night. That
was one of the surprising things about last night from
the start.
Speaker 9 (32:34):
Yeah, And addition to that, teams continue to run up points.
I know Cascade put a seventy on, Eastbrook had a
seventy last night. And we're continuing to see teams score
in the seventies and the sixties, I think compared to
what we saw one week ago where the offenses seemed
to have some successes. You know, we're just not seeing
(32:56):
those crazy games like the Martinsville Franklin game forty forty one.
We're not seeing a lot of those across the board,
you know, North White Faith Christian fifty to forty, up
and down the line. I think that depending up on
who's playing, who won any particular given night, and you know,
I know there was a lot of overtime games.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Right Paul Kinder and I'll come back. Spent some more
time talking about high school football. Looking at week number six.
This is Indiana Sports Look Board Update.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
I medi garrison Let's preview Tomorro slat. Starting with the
Indianapolis Colts at one o'clock. They will be taking on
the Tennessee Titans. It is their first road game of
the season and it's the first divisional game of the year.
Head coach Shane Steiken previews that matchup.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
Got a lot of respect for Dinard Wilson, their decoordinator,
had a chance to be with him in Philly, aggressive style,
attacking defense, multiple looks. Got a good front starts up
front with ninety eight Simmons. He's one of the best
in the league, so I got to control him as
much as possible. Sneeds a hell of a player on
defense as well, so I think they do a lot
of good things defensively. I think offensively they can run
(34:02):
the ball really well. I think Paulard's an explosive back.
Speaker 9 (34:06):
I think the.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Quarterback's very talented. He can move around, make plays off platforms.
So we've got to have great rush lanes come Sunday
against him, because he made a ton of plays a
little bit with his legs already. He made a third
and goal at the nine against the Rams, running around
Bom and threw it back across his body.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
Which was a hell of a play. So we got
doing a good job containing him.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
Kick off at one o'clock. You can watch the game
on CBS. Of course, you can listen to it on
the Colts Radio network between the Colts and the Titans.
Injury report nobody on it. For Indianapolis, Tyler Warren was
with a tow injury. He has been removed from the
injury report to various ward cleared concussion protocol. He is
off the report and good to go tomorrow for the
(34:46):
Indianapolis Colts as it pertains to the Indiana Fever. It
is Game one of the WNBA Semi Finals tomorrow against
the Las Vegas Aces. Stephanie White explains what's different from
Las Vegas compared to their previous matchup.
Speaker 4 (35:00):
Number one their physicality on defense. You know, they're they're
really active.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Were you never Candiana Sports Amadie Garrison, Welcome.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
Back everybody on Bob Lovell. We're rekindling our conversation with
Paul Condrey about high school football. It is week number six.
It's hard for me to say it. It's hard to
say and by the way, it always goes quickly, but uh,
(35:32):
it just seems like this is going as quickly as
any others Week six. Now we're heavy into the conference
schedules and uh, we're again starting to see some tremendous
matchups and people with eyes, as you pointed out, eyes
on winning conference championships. So this this weekend and the
next two or three clearly are incredibly important to that end.
Speaker 4 (35:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (35:54):
But here's some of the games that we're going to
be looking at this our feature games Avon Uh. Of
course the Sergeant under Robbie Gibson. They've really made some
inroads there in his third season. They're going to be
on the road at Fisher's. Should be a great game
over at Clarion Field. Of course, I mentioned Brownsburg at
Westfield game over at the Riverview Health Stadium, that should
(36:14):
be a terrific football game if everybody comes to play,
you know, down at John Lightyfield down in Vandenberg County.
It's going to be Evansville Wrights is going to be
matched up at Castle, a pair of four and one teams.
I think this is an interesting matchup. Blanger's playing good
football right now. They're going to be Acrosstown if you will.
Matching up against Fort Wayne north Over at Spueller Stadium.
(36:37):
A really neat game here for Heritagehills. If Herriton Sill
is going to lose a regular season game, this is
potentially it. I don't think it's going to happen. But
Heritage Chills at five and zero is on the road
at Gibson Southern. That's a great matchup between two terrific
coaches there. Todd Wilkerson has done a terrific job over
the course of his career, and of course the young
(36:57):
Cart has done a wonderful job. Indian Creek Try West
Try West coming off a big win last night. They're
going to be hosting Indian Creek at Hendricksfield. Northeastern having
a great team out in Eastern Indiana. They're gonna be
matched up. But Centerville always having a good year there playfield.
How about those Quakers Quakers baby and great football at
de Vere Stadium. They're gonna be matched up against Decatur Central,
(37:19):
Scottsburgh and Charles Down.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
A great game at Reefield.
Speaker 9 (37:22):
And then rounding out my last final game that we're
looking forward to, how about unbeaten South Bend Saint Joe
unbeaten for the first time since twenty eleven. They're going
to be on the road at Rice Field to take
on the Elk Cahr Lions. That should be a good
one and should be one that will have a lot
of ramifications in the competitive Northern Indiana Conference.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Again, you and I, you're already working. You and your
staff are already working for the pairing show on the
twelfth of October. You know What's it's a great time
of year. The weather's been great, The leaves look fun,
it's fantastic to get out and travel, all of those things,
and we are in the thick of it. And I
(38:08):
hope I don't jinx it, but the weather's been really
great and let's hope.
Speaker 9 (38:13):
The Hoosiers continue to do what they're doing.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
Yeah. Absolutely, Paul Condrey, You're the best. Paul Condrey and
I will be with you Friday talking about high school football.
Will do this again next week, Paul, have a great weekend,
get my best Titania and the family, and be safe
this week. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Paul. John
(38:35):
Herritt joins me. John. Hoosiers win sixty three to ten
over a hapless Illinois team, if you will, What a
huge win tonight for the Hoosiers.
Speaker 8 (38:47):
Were talking about halfless, Bob, I thought they were the
eighth best team in the country.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
Yeah, it makes it even more impressive, John, quite frankly, Yes,
yes it does.
Speaker 8 (38:58):
And you knew it was gonna be a long night
for Illinois when they gave up a punt return for
it that was well a punt that was blocked by
Indiana's best corner that got returned for a touchdown that
set the tone, and then the almost the six hundred
yards of total offense. Fernando Mendoza had a stat line
for the ages twenty one of twenty three for two
(39:21):
hundred and sixty seven yards passing for Indiana five touchdowns,
so he had more touchdowns than incompletion. I mean the
numbers of this video game like and this team was
all week I got the vibe that they were ready
for the task, and boy they were. They were ready.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
And then so John, hang on through the short break. Okay,
you got it, We'll come back talk more. Who's your
football on Indiana Sports Suck. Welcome back everyone. John Herrick
returns from the IU network. I you beating Illinois sixty
three to ten. Let's talk about offensively? How much more
(39:59):
do you do you want this group to do?
Speaker 8 (40:01):
John, It's pretty hard to find it. I mean, you know,
several guys catch a touchdown pass. Bernanda Mendoza spreads it around,
his brother Alberto gets to get in the game late.
Grant Wilson, the third string quarterback, even got to get
got to get in the game. They didn't even go
the third string quarterback against Indiana State, but Indiana was
(40:23):
able to just put this game away by halftime. I
had a feeling that this whole week it just felt
like the Nebraska game last year. To me, didn't think
it was going to be this kind of a similar result.
But here we are, and it's a testament to the
way that Kurt Signetti is able to lead this team.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
Especially you know, you look at this day and age
where rosters change overnight. Uh, theirs has, but they continue
to play at a high, high level. You know, you
look at what they've done at the quarterback spot, and
Curtis Urk was as good as it gets until Mendoza rules.
So it's just it's incredible.
Speaker 8 (41:04):
Yeah, And Kurt Signette has been known as as a
guy who really knows how to develop and mold quarterbacks.
For there were some NFL scouts tonight at this game
who I'm sure are going to have their eye on
Fernando Mendoza, especially if he keeps playing this way. But
it's just if football is a game, it's so important
you got to win it in the trenches and the
offensive line, and they were able to pave the way
(41:27):
for the running backs again tonight, and then the way
the defensive line got after Luke Altmeyer seven sacks, ten
tackles for loss. It was just an utter domination and
everybody talked about how big Illinois's offensive line was, but
they did not handle the speed of Indiana's defensive front,
(41:48):
which caused them headaches all night long.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
Up next they go to Iowa. It's gonna be an
interesting matchup. Playing at this level, this seems to me
to be an IU team that may be very difficult
for people to beat.
Speaker 8 (42:05):
Yeah, it'll be that way, but you can't overlook Iowa.
They're a different team. I watched a good chunk of
their game Friday night after I got home from my
high school game, and man, the way they scored fourteen
unanswered points to beat Rutgers and win the game thirty
eight twenty eight. You can't overlook that team. And you
know Signette's going to be preaching that all week about
not overlooking Iowa. They're not the same Iowa. They're not
(42:29):
the Iowa team that scores ten points and punts the
ball eight times and wins a game ten to six. Like,
they're not that Iowa anymore. They're much different Iowa. They
know how to move the football, and they're offensively evolving
to a point where they can be competitive. And their
only loss is to a ranked Iowa state team this year,
so you know they're going to be formidable. It'll be
(42:50):
a tough environment to play in, but I know the
Hoosiers will be ready for it.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
John Herrick from the IU Sports Network. The Hoosiers dismantled
number nine Illinois sixty three to ten the final. John
thank you so much for the call. I have a
fantastic weekend.
Speaker 8 (43:06):
Thank you, Coach.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
My thanks to John Herrick and our other great guest
