Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back everyone. I'm Bob Lovel. This is Network Indiana's
Indiana Sports Stock. One more hour and very busy weekend
of football and basketball. Right now, though we turn it
over to the star of our show. It's Network Indiana's
Nathaniel Finch.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Nathaniel Finch with you. The last few minutes of the
Big Ten title game upon us and we'll continue to
keep you updated on this one. Right now, Indiana, the
number two ranked Oosers lead the top ranked Ohio State
buck Guys with a Big Ten championship on the line
thirteen to ten. But Julian's saying, and the Buck Guys
are driving now in the red zone and a chance

(00:37):
to tie or take the lead here, we'll keep an
eye on that now. After this run, it'll be second
down and two from the ten yard line, so Ohio
State threatening to score. Still enough time, maybe the Hoosiers
can have the last word. We'll keep an eye on
that one. Certainly, Ie you ahead thirteen to ten over
the buck guys. Some college football playoff ramifications in that one.

(00:59):
Winner obviously will get probably the number one seed and
a bye the loser. We'll see how far they fall.
Could also have a buy we'll find out the college
football playoff bracket tomorrow. Number three Georgia gets to win
against number nine Alabama today twenty eight to seven in
the SEC title game. Texas tank over byu thirty four

(01:19):
to seven there and then Virginia down by seven a
few minutes left in the fourth quarter against Duke so
Mayhem and the college football Playoff will keep an eye
on that one throughout. The big question, does Notre Dame
make the playoffs? We'll find out tomorrow at noon. Currently
right near that cut line, kind of the last power team,
the last at large bid fighting with Alabama and Miami.

(01:42):
Three teams two spots. Will keep an eye on that
one as well. College basketball today from macki Arena, Iowa State,
the tenth rink team in the country, knocks down the
Boilers Purdue at home. They lose eighty one to fifty eight.
Matt Painter not too happy after this one.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
I just thought they stole our spirit. You know, when
we would get open ones that we would miss it
and then get frustrated. Whatever do we just our frustration
level got there. You got to get by it with
state credit. Our reason for having a high frustration level
was them they were damn good. They took us to
the woodshed.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Not much better for the Indiana Hoosiers also take into
the woodshed today, this one from Gainbridge Field House. A
little renewed rivalry with Louisville. The number six ranked Cardinals
come to town and defeat the Hoosiers eighty seven seventy eight.
They led sixteen to nothing. Darren Devrees on the firepower
of the Cards.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
I mean mckel brown's getting he's getting drafted. He's probably
a top five pick.

Speaker 5 (02:33):
Ryan Comolls their leading scorer.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
He's a really good player.

Speaker 5 (02:36):
You know. McNeely is the third guy that you got
to worry.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
About from a shooting standpoint, Like they just put a
lot of pressure on your defense.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
You're picking and choosing something.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
That's Darren Devrees not too happy after the loss today.
Also in college basketball, Butler falls at home seventy seven
sixty eight against Boise State. I you Indianapolis at home
seventy eight fifty five. The loss against Youngstown State eight
Evansville on the road almost upsets Western Kentucky. Instead, it
is eighty to seventy nine to one point loss. Hey, big

(03:07):
update for you. In the Big Ten title game, a
missed field goal a chip shot from twenty seven yards out.
No good wide left for the buck guys. That means
the Hoosiers have a three point lead, three minutes left
and the ball. We'll keep an eye on the final.
There great news if you are an Indiana Hoosiers fan.
High school basketball today across the state of Indiana. Let's

(03:29):
start with the boys in for a number one Fishers
takes care of number fifteen Mount Vernon of Fortville, the
Sneakers for Santa shootout at Brownsburg High School fifty seven
to forty eight Fishers with the win. There, Number four
Crown Point beats rival Penn fifty nine to fifty five
the final. There Anderson the fifth ranked team in the class,
sixty seven to thirty five over fort Way Northrop, and

(03:51):
then Jeffersonville, the reigning champions, beat a team from Cincinnati.
This is Hughes forty eight to forty one that final.
How about the episode for Lawrence north It beats Noblesville
fifty eight fifty one in the final. There in four
a three to a How about this three a number
one against three a number two in high school basketball?
Tonight boys basketball the Cathedral Fighting Irish ranked number one,

(04:14):
beats South Bend Saint Joseph, the reigning champions, seventy eight
seventy one the final there newpal the third ranked team
in the class, upset by green Woods seventy eight sixty
six in two a. Number two South Ripley wins seventy
to fifty six against North to Cator, number four Park
Heritage seventy seven to thirty over Riverton Park and number
five Northeastern and eight point win over South Adams. Plenty

(04:38):
of hoop action for you today. Nathaniel Finch, Welcome back everyone.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Glad you could join US high school basketball today. Boys
basketball Waldron forty eight forty winners over Edinburgh, first time
that the Mohawks have beaten Edinburgh in eight years with
me are very happy jibs. We're the head coach of Waldron. Coach,
thanks so much for the call. Congratulations on a great

(05:04):
win tonight.

Speaker 6 (05:06):
Thank you, Sarah, and I appreciate all you do for
Indiana high school basketball.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Well, you're very kind. I appreciate that so eight year drought.
This has to feel pretty good, coach.

Speaker 6 (05:19):
It does. And you know we we were down the
eleven at one point in the first half and then
we went on a thirty four to twelve run. So
now we're one and all in the one and oher
and the mid who's your conference? And it was a
it was a team win. I told him before the
game I wanted to play hard and play together and
we did that. Kind of cool side note here we

(05:41):
Edinburgh has a six to eight center Max Stotson, and
we have a seven foot center Carson Smith, and it
was really fun watching a one a basketball, a seven
footer and six eight guy go at it. So it
was a great time.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Well that's amazing, quite frankly, and you know, both of
you should be very happy about you know what's ahead
for you. So tell me how you do this tonight, coach.
I mean, it's obviously one of the big things is
control your emotions and just understanding and play the way
you're supposed to play. So you win by eight, at
what point are you able to take command of this?

Speaker 6 (06:22):
Well, we were down four at halftime and we'd had
a little bit of I wouldn't say disciplinary issues, but
we had a little bit of bad attitudes the last
couple of nights and we kind of talked about being,
you know, all our future Mohawks stars up there watching
in the stands being good foot models, and we really

(06:43):
came out and played great team basketball and they and
they ran a two three zone all night and we
hadn't seen that all year. And we worked for one
three to one this afternoon, and we kept moving to basketball,
and we finally got it inside and and we looked
to run and we went on the lake set of
thirty four to twelve run and you know, it was

(07:06):
it was. It was a great team win. I'm really
proud of my team. And we had a really great
turnout tonight in the community and good. It was great
for Waldron.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Basketball absolutely, all right, So who plays well for you tonight? Coach?
Give me the run of brag about some of these
kids tonight.

Speaker 6 (07:23):
All right. We had Luke Myers, number thirty four, six
two two fifty led us with sixteen he got on
the fast break, played terrific. We had after that six
or four guard junior Ethan Moody had eleven points. Eli
Stewart guarded their best player, Bailey Totten, and he held

(07:46):
into seven points and he's averaging twenty six. Eli only
had seven points tonight, but his effort on the defense
and it was great. Matthew Campbell ended up with six points,
but the way he jumped out on the screens for
their point guard, their leading scorer, really made the difference tonight.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
All right, who do you play next time out? I'm
looking at your schedule. You're playing Morristown, is that right?

Speaker 6 (08:14):
That's correct. We play Morristown on Military Night next Friday,
and that'll be another conference game and another home game.
We're two and at home this year.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
The idea of now, yeah, the idea is to stay
at home.

Speaker 6 (08:29):
Yes, yes, there.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Jeb Stewart is the head coach at Waldron. Waldron beats
Edinburgh tonight forty eight to forty. Coach, thanks so much
for the call, and good luck next week.

Speaker 6 (08:42):
Thank you, sir, Thank you again.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Thanks very much. Rick Johnston joins me from the ISC
Sports Network doing some work at the Sneakers or Santy
event at Brownsburg. He has the Princeton sixty eight to
fifty four win over Charlestown and Lucky Man. He has
the player Enfield seventy five sixty five win over New Albany.

(09:03):
Let's let's go into order. Let's talk about Princeton for
all of our fans. Over there in the Princeton area.
We appreciate that. Uh, the Princeton went over Charlestown. Tell
me how this this game goes, Rick and number and
first of all, thanks for calling. It's always great to
catch up with you. But tell me about your first game.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
Yeah, we start bright in early ten am. You get Princeton,
who made the semi state last year, and sell us
to eventual state runner up Christmas addicts. I had you know,
I had the pleasure of calling their game and that's
and that's in that semi state game last year down
at Southport. And obviously the big star from Lamar Browns
team is Edwin Holmes sixth seventeen. Or let him in
pretty much every offensive category last year and unofficially we

(09:45):
think he I haven't a chance to look at the
official box score yet, but if he didn't get a
triple double, he was darn close to it. He had
thirteen points, he was close to ten rebounds, close to
Tennis's and he was super impressive. He's ranked as one
of the top five small forwards and senior class has
not committed anywhere yet, but he also got some really
big help from a transfer sophomore, Quinton Volts, who was

(10:07):
the one of the top players at Decator Central last year.
He came out and shot the cover off. The ball
had seventeen points at three to three.

Speaker 1 (10:14):
All right, you hear that music and prove that you
are you understand how this game is played. Hang in here, Okay,
we'll come back. We'll talk more with Rick Johnson on
Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Up.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
They're at the eighteen yard live with El Staff at two.
It'll be a twenty eight yard field goal.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
What a great job by that defense and putting a
little pear got in this offense not.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Going for it. Here's the Staff field and kicks the ball.
It is good. It is good wood.

Speaker 5 (10:46):
To the left.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
That would have tied the game the Big Ten Championship
from Lucas Oil Stadium. Instead, the Ohio State buck Guys
kicker misses from twenty seven yards out. I you holds
the lead thirteen to ten. Two minutes left in the game. Now,
Ohio State used its timeouts, brought it to a third
down and six, and Charlie Becker catches a thirty three

(11:09):
yard pass down the sideline. First down. Indiana, they can
ice the game from here. If Ohio State gets another
stopper two. There will only be a few seconds remaining.
We'll keep you update on the final, but as of
right now, thirteen to ten, the IU Hoosiers likely going
to be the number one ranked team in the country.
Tomorrow morning, we'll tell you more about that as we go.
As far as college basketball goes, the Pretty boiler Makers

(11:31):
fall at home, a rare non conference loss against one
of the best teams in the country, Iowa State, the
tenth ranked Cyclones coming to mac Arena and win eighty
one to fifty eighth the final. There not much better
for the Indiana Hoosiers basketball team eighty seven seventy eighth
the final. They made it a close game against number
six Louisville, but this was a team that was down

(11:53):
sixteen to zero from Gamebridge field House to start the game.
Nobody told Darren DeVries the game started at two two
twenty two instead of two forty two. Eighty seven seventy
eight number six Louisville with the win there. Tomorrow afternoon,
the Indianapolis Colts trying to snap an eleven game losing
streak at Jacksonville. They'll play the Jaguars for a chance
to take the lead in the division.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports Sock. We were
talking with Rick Johnston from the ISC network before the break.
Had the opportunity to call a couple of games and
the Sneakers for Santa event at Brownsburg High School. Princeton
beats Charlestown sixty eight to fifty four and Plainfield ba's
New Albany seventy five sixty five. Sorry to cut you

(12:41):
off prematurely, Rick, on on that Princeton Charlestown game. Pick
up if you can on that game.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
Yeah, Well, you know we're talking about Edwin Holmes, and
you know, if you didn't get a triple double, he
was super closed, right. But Quentin Volts transferred in from
de Cator Central, and this guy was a one man wrecking.
He had thirteen points in the first half, made his
worst three threes, and he is really providing a nice punch,
you know, just a sophomore, and you know, coach Lamar
Brown says he brings kind of an indie guard swag

(13:11):
to him, and it's something that they really like to have.
So he's a real nice, real nice compliment to Holmes.
You know, Princeton really blew the game. Open with a
twenty five to eight second quarter, and they got a
really really, really nice victor Day over Charlestown. Who's got
Anthony Fresh, candidate for an Indiana All Star spot, is
going to Miami University over there in Oxford next year.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Sounds like these are two pretty good teams.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
Teams he can win a lot of ball games, yeah,
you know, and Charlestown it's their second loss of the year,
but they've had a really tough start. They've played a
really good schedule here to begin with a couple of
outside shots that might have been able to go for
him just didn't drop today. But you know, Anthony Fresh,
he had a game high twenty eight points. He was
worth the price of admission. He is fantastic to watch.

(13:57):
He is a walking human highlight film. You know, he's
super bouncy and and really really fun. But you know,
I think Princeton really living up to that that number
six ranking in a couple of the polls that came
out for the preseason. Here, you know, the other kind
of unsung hero they had. They have this guy named
Drew Wilkes, who's a six to sixth senior big guy.
Played his freshman and sophomore years at Princeton, moved with

(14:17):
family to Florida, came back for a senior year, came
in and had twenty two points today, including fifteen in
the second half, and is able to stretch the defense.
So Princeton's looking pretty good here early on, you know,
after making a run to the semi state a year ago.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
All right, my Quakers were impressive in their win over
New Albany.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
Yes, I was, I was channeling you today at eleven thirties, coach.
I was, I was, I was envisioning Bob lovel and
playing fields from from eleven to thirty on.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yeahikes, that's that's that's the namage I have difficulty with.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
I'm sorry, mainly from the style category.

Speaker 5 (14:50):
I was trying to envision what you would have worn.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
You know, you're saying, I appreciate that. That's a good
New Albany team. Then it plays feels good. Listen our
guys are they are good? It's a good team.

Speaker 4 (15:02):
Yeah, I mean New Albany. It was like they flipped
the switch. Coach New Albody turned this thing into a
track meet. And I was looking down trying to you know,
you know, put a couple of tally.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
Marks and someone getting a bucket, and next thing I know,
I looked.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
Up a New albody's at the rim getting a layup,
and so they go on this incredible fourteen to nothing
run to flip a seven to four deficit into an
eighteen to seven lead, and you're kind of in I
was working with the Hall of Famer Mike Broughton, and
we looked at each other like we were kind of
trying to catch our breath, like we were out there
playing in this track meet between New Albany and playing Field.

(15:34):
And so New Albany leads twenty to fourteen at the
end of the quarter, and then your Quakers come out
and turn the tables in the second outscoring the Bulldogs
twenty eight to fourteen to take a forty two to
thirty four lead into halftime. You had two twenty points
scores today that the Paul signing Noah Smith had twenty four,
but his junior running mate and Harper baker Lands, who's

(15:55):
a three star recruits getting a lot of look at
the mid major level, finished with a game high twenty
seven points to day.

Speaker 5 (16:00):
For the Quakers.

Speaker 6 (16:01):
They get they.

Speaker 4 (16:02):
Get fifteen from Landon Gilead in a couple of nice
other plays as well for Plainfield, but they're looking really
good for head coach Andy weavers Bunch. And the other
interesting thing to coach was both of these teams played
last night as well. Yeah, so Plainfield moves to four
and oe and they beat Whiteland last night in New
Albany put ninety four in Evansville Harrison.

Speaker 5 (16:21):
So it was uh yeah, it was a it was
a It was a real fun one there.

Speaker 4 (16:25):
At eleven thirty and uh yeah, it was good.

Speaker 5 (16:27):
Seth Seth Winsle.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
Had thirteen points to night for New Albany Noel Washington
at fifteen forum.

Speaker 5 (16:32):
So but if you if you don't have.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
Good Guard playing Southern Indiana and you see New Albany
on your schedule, it's it's gonna be a long night
for it because those guys can get up and go.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
That's well done. Rick Johnson from the i C Sports
Network at the Sneakers for Santa event at Brownsburg High School,
Princeton beats Charlestown's sixty eight to fifty four Plainfield seventy
five sixty five winners over New Albany. Rick, thanks so
much for thinking of us and calling and have a
great weekend.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Thanks coach.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Can I give two shout outs on the way out
on the way out here, I'll make it quick, I.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Promise, absolutely, take your time, take your time. Go ahead.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
Well, no, no, I know you have a bevy of
calls that you have to get to, so I'm not
going to hold the lineup anymore. No one needs to
hear me, hear me, yap more than I need to.
But I so, I actually did a third game today.
I was kind of taking a page out of Greg
RAGSTRAWSBO really so Nike, Yeah, so so well so Segar
beat Clinton Prairie. Seager was up by twenty heading into
the fourth quarter. Mason Hughes nineteen points, made four threes

(17:28):
in a row one point, finished five of seven from
three as the Patriots shot the cover off the ball
from three and last shout out of a place near
and dear to my heart, place I worked at for
eleven years. Taylor University had their annual Silent Night game
last night. Big and Trojans, Yeah all over all over
social media and everything, so so shout out to the
Trojans up there and upland.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
Did you call that game last night?

Speaker 6 (17:51):
I did not.

Speaker 4 (17:51):
I was I was working two. I was working at
Clinton Prairie Girls and Boys Novel Headers was starting right
when Silent Night started. But I had the pleasure during
my eleven years are there to call ten of them.

Speaker 5 (18:01):
So it was it's a wonderful event. If anybody can go, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
It is. I know when Paul was coaching and they
they didn't start it. And when I was at I
v U Y, I already left and they started it.
They were one of our big rivals. And uh, he
told me about the event. And when I he told me,
I said, you need to say this again because I
didn't even fully understand. And then once it happened, Uh,

(18:28):
it was. It's one of the neatest things around. Uh
love what they do. Love I love how they do it.
And it's something if you get a chance, and great.
What's great is the kids have a great time. And
I'm that's supposed to be the idea behind having intercollegiate athletics,
but that's for another discussion. So that's great. I'm glad.

(18:49):
I'm glad you brought it up and encourage people. All
you get to go on social media and you can
see it. It's a it's a pretty cool. It's a
it's a really cool event, without question. Rick, great to
talk to you. Take care, be safe. Okay, thank you,
thanks very much. So you know all right, Na, Daniel Finch,

(19:12):
before I start talking again, give me an update about
to go final.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
I'll give you an update here in a second.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
Okay, sounds perfect to me. We got a couple of
minutes here, all right, now, listen, Caleb, get back in
my ear if you can and tell me what's going on.
I'm sorry. Yeah, Hey, we got Brendan King on the
line if you want to go to him, No problem,
no problem at all, Brendan King. The Brendan King joins me. Brendan,

(19:43):
thanks so much for the call. How are you tonight?

Speaker 5 (19:47):
Coach?

Speaker 7 (19:47):
Doing great for the great state of Minnesota. And I
getting ready to call some Weaver State Saint Thomas tomorrow
for the Big Sky Summit League Challenge.

Speaker 5 (19:56):
So that's what I got on the docket here this weekend.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Gentlemen, can I interject here hold on a sick This
voice you hear is Nathaniel Finch.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
The Hoosiers win the Big Ten championship game, the first
win against Ohio State in the last thirty tries thirteen
to ten, Jeremiah Smith catches the hail Mary but short,
and IU wins. And will I'll be the number one
ranked team of the country heading into the playoffs.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Oh and yeah, the headline from ESPN just came on
my phone. OHI have State missus tying field goal in
final minutes, number two, Indiana wins. Okay, way to go,
Nathaniel Finch. Wait, you jump in, Brendan King. That's amazing,
my brother, that is absolutely amazing.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
You can't believe it.

Speaker 7 (20:45):
Wait, Nathaniel, come back here, you said, Jeremiah Smith caught
the hell Mary at the goal line, but didn't get in.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
Not at the goal line. It was about the thirty
yard line. It was a long hail Mary, and they
tackled him short. So it wasn't dramatic dramatic, but it
was a little dramatic.

Speaker 6 (21:00):
Right, That's that's unbelievable.

Speaker 7 (21:02):
I've just coached to think about that, to fathom that.
And this, don't forget as well. This just happened in
downtown Indianapolis. It's a it's a story book ending, is
it not.

Speaker 1 (21:13):
Oh, there's no question. Uh, there's no there's no question.
I was I was at I p U I today
with Greg doing a game. And you know, obviously I
p U is not downtown where the action was. It's
not it's not by you know, Lucas Oil and certainly
not by Gamebridge, but you could you had to know

(21:34):
where you were going, uh, even at one o'clock in
the afternoon because things were lighting. And then when when
the I p U I game was over, getting out
and getting back to Franklin was quite an adventure. We'll
come back. We'll talk more with Brendan King. This is
Indiana sports suck.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
Here's the staff saying back to throwing that pressure toms
Ralston was right, tries to run with it.

Speaker 6 (22:01):
Throws it down the field, it.

Speaker 2 (22:02):
Is stipped up in the air, and that's the ball
game right there.

Speaker 1 (22:09):
Bendiana wins. Mindiana has beat the Olhaddo Stake puck Eys,
the number one table, the Cup lay, the Hooshers hop
beating the buck Eyes.

Speaker 5 (22:21):
He Indiana is going.

Speaker 7 (22:23):
To the college football playoff and I gonna get a
five h unfelievable.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
Ohio State had won thirty straight games against the Hoosiers,
that the longest streak in the nation. That now snapped.
Number two Indiana will claim the top spot in the
College Football Playoff thirteen and zero. What a year Indiana
has had. They will be the number one ranked team
for the first time ever. Thirteen and ten. They'll win

(22:50):
in the Big Ten Title game, the first time the
Hoosiers had played for a Big Ten championship, and they
win their first conference title since all the way back
in nineteen forty five. Shall I keep going? It's a
huge win for the Indiana Hoosiers. Highlights tonight all night
long from lear Field. That's Don Fisher, the voice of
the Hoosiers. Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman favorite, does just enough

(23:13):
tonight two hundred and twenty two passing yards and a touchdown.
The Hoosiers win thirteen to ten because Ohio State missed
what would have been the game time field goal, a
chip shot from twenty seven yards out. The drive prior,
the Hoosiers stopped Julian saying the Ohio State quarterback on
a fourth down and one quarterback sneak, his knee hit

(23:34):
the ground and it was a turnover on downs there
I U stopped the Buckeyes plenty of times tonight thirteen
to ten to win.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
Welcome back everyone, This is Indiana sports talk. How about
those Hoosiers? What a great, great story we're talking with
Brendan King. All right, Brendan King. So the Hoosiers are in.
Now the question is are your Irish going to get in?

Speaker 7 (24:02):
Yeah? I mean that's the question of the night, is
it not, especially what happened earlier in the day. But
I would say, first thing, coach is, you know, you
got to ask yourself, are the Notre Dame fighting Irish
one of the best twelve teams in the country. I think,
without doubt that's.

Speaker 5 (24:16):
A resounding yes.

Speaker 7 (24:17):
And then the number two thing is there were two
primary concerns heading in the conference championship day here today.
That was BYU and Alabama. And obviously Alabama looked atrocious
at times against in that Georgia game.

Speaker 5 (24:31):
And then, for the second time this.

Speaker 7 (24:32):
Year, BYU was beaten by double digits by Texas Tech.
Now Texas Tech is a top five team in the country.
However it's the second time this season, coach, the BYU
has been pounded by Texas Tech. So I think if
you're a Notre Dame fan, today went about as well
as you possibly could have hoped. Knowing that the Irish
are not playing, knowing that Alabama did not look good

(24:53):
against Georgia and knowing that again for the second time
this season BYU got wallets by Texas Tech, So you know,
it comes down to it.

Speaker 6 (25:00):
Coach.

Speaker 7 (25:01):
I also asked myself this question of, you know, going
into the college football playoff a year ago, think about
what a totally different position although Notre Dame was ranked
higher that they were in because you have to remind
yourself Notre Dame arguably had one of the worst losses
among any college football.

Speaker 5 (25:18):
Team lastst year to Northern Illinois.

Speaker 7 (25:21):
This season's very different where your first two games are losses, Yes,
but they're to Texas A and m and Miami, two
teams in my opinion, she should probably also be in.
And those two losses came by a combined four points.
So I just think it's, you know, a little ironic
that Notre Dame is being treated more so like an
outlier this year when last year they probably deserve to

(25:46):
be treated like one when it came to that Northern
Illinois loss. So it's just funny how year to year
things can change so quickly.

Speaker 1 (25:52):
I think the overriding thought I have is that there's
got to be a better way to do this now.
Having said that, I don't have that idea of what
it is, but you know, I try not to be
critical of things I don't know a lot about. I
have to admit I don't spend a whole lot of
time focusing on college football playoffs. I should probably spend

(26:18):
more time. I just know that I've always believed, in
all my years as a coach and as an administrator, committees.
If you leave decisions like this to committees, I'm aware,
I know firsthand the politics that go on on these

(26:38):
kinds of things, and there has to be a better
way to do it now. I would remind people that
to college football playoffs are not governed by the NCAA.
They are an independent group. And so you know they
you've turned over college football, that you've turned over the
NCAA to a cadre, if you will, a cabal of

(27:03):
administrators who all have special interest and have their own
self interest involved in everything they move, in everything they do.
And so if you really want to truly have a
legitimate tournament and a legit champion, that's that's done. That's
done on metrics, and done on success, and done on

(27:23):
the field, you need to revamp this. But having said that, again,
I don't have the answer.

Speaker 7 (27:30):
Yeah, I mean I don't either, And yeah, I do
think it's funny coach that I think when the college
football Playoffs has expanded to twelve teams, the notion was that, hey,
this is gonna give the little guy a chance to
get in, right, That's what people were saying about it.
This is gonna give the little guy that no, it's
Sun Belts to the conference. Well that's my point. That's

(27:53):
my point here. It's gonna give quote unquote again I'm
paraphrasing here, they're saying it's gonna give Conference USA and
the Sun Belt opportunities to compete. Now, listen, coach, at
the end of the day, what's the job of the
college Football Playoff to sell tickets, to sell merchandise, to
make money and to get good ratings.

Speaker 5 (28:10):
And this is no.

Speaker 7 (28:11):
Disrespect to James Madison where Kurt Signetti came from. And
I know James Madison's coach just went to UCLA. I
think Billy Napier just got hired there. And this is
no disrespect to James Madison. But I saw a report
today on a large sports network that said that James
Madison could be team number twelve in the College Football
Playoff because they won the Sun Belt and they could

(28:32):
keep Notre Dame slash Alabama out.

Speaker 5 (28:35):
That to me is just.

Speaker 7 (28:37):
Again the front page of a newspaper when somebody says
this is the point of the twelve team playoff.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
No, it's not.

Speaker 5 (28:44):
They don't care about that.

Speaker 7 (28:46):
And at the end of the day, they're gonna do
what's right for the financial product. But still, I do
think coach, when it comes down to it, Notre Dame
is one of the best twelve teams in the country.
I think their body of work does speak for itself
special when you take into account losing by combined four
points in two games to start the season and then
running the table the rest of the way. Now be

(29:08):
it Notre dame schedule to finish the season not as
strong as last year. The coach, I'll take a line
from you that you like to use a lot, and
I totally agree with you. You play who's on your schedule,
and Notre Dame did that and they won every game
the rest of the way after that zero to two start,
which in my mind puts them as one of the
best twelve.

Speaker 5 (29:26):
In the country.

Speaker 1 (29:27):
He's Brendan King. He is. What game are you doing again?
Remind me of what this game is?

Speaker 7 (29:35):
Yeah, I'm up in snowy Saint Paul. I've got the
Big Sky Summit League challenge, Weaber States, visiting Saint Thomas,
all of the call tomorrow for the Summit League and
looking forward to being at a brand new arena up
here in Saint Paul. They actually just built it, and
Saint Thomas, of course came up from the D three
level Weaver State Award established winning program, Damian Lillard.

Speaker 5 (29:57):
Probably their most famous alump.

Speaker 7 (29:59):
So look forward to having the call to them.

Speaker 1 (30:02):
Brendan King, So your win. Are you back with us next.

Speaker 7 (30:06):
Week as you know, well, as you know you know,
as we talked about, I'll be stepping aside for a
little bit and I'll be back with you after Christmas.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
Sounds perfect, Brendan King. Have fun, be safe. We'll talk
to you, hi, Coach, Love you, Thanks, thank you. All right,
let's talk some basketball, talking a little bit of basketball's
before we talk basketball and Matt Taylor's with us. Hey, man,
I need you to hang on for a second. I
need you to talk to coach Kyle Amoor from Lewis

(30:36):
Cass casbeat's Pioneer sixty six forty four coach, I'm sorry
for mispronouncing your name, but congratulations on the win.

Speaker 8 (30:44):
Hey, thanks a lot. I appreciate it, big fan. I
enjoy when you guys commentate the sectional draw, the regional drawers,
the semi state draw. So no, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Well, you're welcome. So let's talk about how you were
able to get this win over Pioneer tonight.

Speaker 8 (31:03):
Well, you know CASS counting tournament. As you know, anytime
there's any rivalries, records kind of get thrown out the window.
And you know, we were probably the favorite and the thing.
We're seven and zero right now, playing good basketball. We've
won back to back specual championships. We're probably the team
that if we walk away without without this county championship,

(31:25):
people are probably calling for my job, I guess. But
you know we got we kind of painted our target
on our backs now and so Pioneer came out firing. Man,
they hit seven three, They made it a ball game. However,
I've got six seniors that they're pretty darn good, and
we were able to respond on each of those shots
and you know when you got a two seniors one

(31:48):
score twenty one points, that's Aptain Griffin. She's only about
ninety points away from a thousand. Anna Hedrick at fourteen,
she's on our fifth all time leader and assists in
like our tenth all time and Steel's, uh, You're you're
gonna win big games with seniors that have that kind
of experience.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
I would say that's the truth. Well it's a great
win though. I mean, so, now, who do you play next?
And did you win the turn? Is that the tournament championship?

Speaker 6 (32:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (32:15):
Tonight, Yeah, tonight was a congresship. Yeah, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 6 (32:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (32:19):
We uh we played Casting in the first round and
Casting is historician.

Speaker 5 (32:25):
And they've been pretty good.

Speaker 8 (32:26):
Then they went to the semi state two years ago
and uh they gave us a game on Wednesday night. Uh,
but yeah, it's a four team tournament. It's logan sport,
Lewis Cast Pioneer and Casting and uh it's always it's
always this early in our season and uh uh it's uh,
it's a it's a great kind of test to test
your kids before that Christmas break and it's definitely Lewis

(32:50):
Casts only won the thing three times in the last
I think they've been doing the tournament for thirty years
and so, uh, tonight was our third win in thirty years.
So we're we're pretty proud of that.

Speaker 1 (33:01):
You should be coach Kyle anymore from m Lewis Cass
They win the Cast County Tournament in a big fashion,
sixty six to forty four of a pioneer coach. Thanks
for sharing it with us. Congratulations again and good luck
next time out.

Speaker 8 (33:16):
All right, man, thanks a lot, appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (33:18):
Coming up, Matt Taylor. This is a great way to
great way to wrap up the show talking about Matt
Taylor and the Colts and congratulations to IU. What a
what a great night stay with us score with update
coming up with Nathaniel Finch.

Speaker 2 (33:39):
It had been fifty eight years since the last time
Indiana football won a Big Ten title. Well, Rendiana Hou's
beat the old House State pays.

Speaker 1 (33:52):
The number one table to cut Rag.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
Now I you will claim the top spot in tomorrow's
college football Playoff reveal thirty teen to ten. The Hoosiers
with the win over the buck guys from Lucas Oil
Stadium in the Big Ten Championship game. Caleb zuver and
I wondering how the heck we're gonna get out of
the city of Indianapolis tonight. Mayhem across the Circle city
the Hoosiers with the win over the buck Guys, Ohio

(34:17):
State missing a twenty seven yard what would have been
a game tying field goal late in the fourth quarter,
IU ran the clock out from there, a shutout pitched
by Kurt Signetti's defense in half number two. Let's get
through some more scores here before we exit, because Georgia
blew out Alabama. Now some intrigue, Notre Dame, Alabama and

(34:38):
Miami will kind of split the last two at large spots,
and the college football playoff bracket find out tomorrow at
noon if the Irish make it in, but the Hoosiers
will likely have the number one seed in a first
round by for macki Arena. Today Number ten Iowa State
beats the Boilers eighty one to fifty eight. Perdue will
lose its number one ranking coming up on Monday. Indiana

(35:00):
will probably also drop out of the ap pull themselves,
although Pretty will probably only slide down a few spots.
IU was ranked twenty second. It loses from Gainbridge Field
House today against number six Louisville eighty seven seventy eight.
That final Louisville started on a sixteen to zero run. Tomorrow,
the Indianapolis Colts look to snap an eleven game losing

(35:21):
streak at Jacksonville. If they beat the Jags at one o'clock,
they lead the AFC South.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Welcome back everyone, speaking of the Colts. The voice of
the Colts joins us Matt Taylor live from Jacksonville. Matt,
thanks so much for the call. And it's pandemonium here
in Indiana with IU with the big win tonight.

Speaker 5 (35:49):
You know, I you know, I'm like a lot of people.
I grew up going to Ius football games as my pop.
It was kind of like a thing that we did.
It was kind of like our thing. And so we're
celebrating from across the country. I'm in Jacksonville, he's up
in Indianapolis tonight and this is I mean. I said

(36:10):
two years ago that I didn't think Indiana football would
ever be able to beat the program of Ohio State ever,
just because I thought there was too much of a
gap there. But to be able to do it in
two years time, and to win an outright championship for
the first time since nineteen forty five against the number
one team in the country, undefeated Ohio State, and now

(36:30):
to be the number one team in the country that
have the number one seed and the college football playoffs.
Like I don't even know. I mean, I'm the biggest
IU football fan that I know, and I don't even
know what to say. Like it's and I've been following
every minute, every detail of this, right and I realm
at a loss for word. It's remarkable.

Speaker 1 (36:51):
How about it's a miracle. How's that? I mean literally,
I mean it's olders are the same way. I mean,
you don't have you don't have the distinction of losing
more games than anyone else in college football and then
suddenly two years later you bring in a new coach

(37:12):
and two years later you win the Big Ten championship
and beat Ohio State. That would be I think in
terms of sports, I'm putting that in the miracle category.

Speaker 5 (37:22):
I mean, yeah, I mean, as an IU football fan,
what I've always argued against, you know, the perception of
Indiana football is I've always said that IU football should
be Iowa, they should be Wisconsin, they should be you know,
you know, fill in your team that goes eight and
four every year as the baseline, Like, there was no

(37:44):
excuse for Indiana football to not be able to have
that type of a program. That's what I've always argued.
Never in a million years did I argue what they've
been able to accomplish in the last two So I mean,
I mean, I don't know where the where the blueprints
lay for the statue of Kurt Signetty, but go ahead

(38:05):
and just fast forward. I mean, get those things fast
tracked to get that statue built within the next you
know year, for for for the opening game in twenty
twenty six, for for Memorial Stadium. I mean, this is
this is unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (38:21):
No, it is all right. Now let's turn our attention
to your guys. This is a big this is a
big ball game. This is an important ball game on
a number of fronts for the Colts. Yeah, and I
know the lead in is well, they haven't won there
in a long time, and on and on and on.
These guys haven't been there. I mean, this this group.
You can't lay all those past blame, past losses on

(38:44):
these guys. So this is a different group. But it isn't.
It's a I'm not a huge, big, must win type
of guy. But this is in extremely important category for
for the Coults in this matchup with Jacksonville tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (39:00):
Yeah, like you said, the math doesn't say it's a
big game, but you know, reality kind of trumps it
because it's not the ultimate swing game. But man, it
feels awfully important. I mean, you know the analytics, right,
we live in the world of calculations and analytics and
things like that. So per the athletics playoff models, if

(39:22):
you will, if the Colts win this game, it's a
huge AFC South game. Both teams are eight and four.
But if the Colts win, their odds of making the
playoffs or at eighty six percent after tomorrow. If they lose,
it's down to fifty percent, which is basically just a
coin flip with only four games to go, and you
look at the Colts schedule down the stretch. They got

(39:43):
to play at Seattle, a tough place to play, they
got to host a good San Francisco team, and then
they end the season inside the AFC South, which has
proven to be pretty tough. Here with three teams still
in the running with the Colts and the Jaguars and
the Texans. So yeah, I mean this is this is
two different eight and four teams. You know, you have
a surging eight and four, you have a stumbling eight

(40:05):
and four with the Colts losing three of their last four. Uh,
this is gonna be a very important game for the Colts,
not only to end the streak, but to build some
confident confidence and get back on the right track.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
All right, Matt, hang on through the short break. Okay,
you got it. Welcome back everyone, Matt Taylor rejoins us. Yeah,
that's an important game, no question at all. Joe Burrow,
excuse me, Trevor Lawrence back. There are so many storylines, Matt.
When you're getting ready for this broadcast tomorrow, you're always prepared,

(40:38):
but you've got a lot going on tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (40:41):
Yeah, Tomorrow is a really interesting game for the Jaguars because,
like I said, you got a surging eight and four
team in Jacksonville, and they're really kind of an interesting squad,
kind of a mysterious group because you know, they play
with a good edge about them. They're really physical. But
you know, it sounds cliche, we say it all the time,
but I think there's some truth in it too. Like

(41:02):
NFL teams go as their starting quarterback goes.

Speaker 6 (41:05):
Right.

Speaker 5 (41:05):
We see that with the Colts and the great play
consistently this year from Daniel Jones. Well, if that were
the case for the Jacksonville Jaguars, they would be more
like a four to eight team instead of an eight
and four team based on what they're getting consistently this
year out of Trevor Lawrence. Because it's really kind of
confusing because he's got the most turnovers in the NFL

(41:26):
with fourteen, he's got the third most interceptions with eleven.
He's got the third worst passer rating in the NFL
among qualified quarterbacks, and he only has one game all
year over one hundred passer rating, which came last Sunday
against the Tennessee Titans. And even that game's kind of
weird because you know, they won by twenty two points
or whatever it was, but they still punted seven times

(41:49):
and they had five to three and ounce on offense.
But yet they've scored at least twenty five points in
five straight games. So you're kind of left asking yourself,
how are they doing this right? What's their magic formula?
And I think it's because they're playing confimentary defense and
the defense is giving extra chances to the offense to
kind of overcome their own problems. The defense is number

(42:10):
one in stopping the run around eighty two yards per game.
They get they are they're taking the football away at
a pretty high rate. This year. They've got twenty takeaways,
which is third best in the NFL. So they're giving
the offense some extra opportunities to possess the football. Another
thing that's weird too, that kind of compliments what I'm
saying is they're twenty six on third down offense, but

(42:32):
their eighth and time of possession, Like, I don't know
how those two things can go hand in hand, but
they are with the Jaguars, and that's kind of concerning
for the Colts because if you watch them in the
last two games, that's what's popped up as an issue
on defense, is that, you know, the Colts with the
point total in the last two games, it's been pretty good.
But if you dig a little bit deeper, the Chiefs

(42:54):
and the Texans have had time of possession against the
Colts defense over seventy seven minutes. It's combined of time
and possession, So that's kind of the hallmark of this
Colts defense right now. As they're getting stops when they
need to, they're being good in the red zone, I think. Again,
the Texans and Chiefs are combined three for eleven scoring
touchdowns inside the twenty yard line in the last two games.

(43:17):
So the Colts are getting stops when they have to,
but they're not being good on first and second down,
leading to a lot of third down conversions, easy third
down conversions, and a lot of time at possession. So
it's just not a formula that I think the Colts
can sustain. So we'll see if they can remedy that
against a Trevor Lawrence offense that, for the most part,
is kind of hard to figure out in a lot

(43:39):
of cases.

Speaker 1 (43:39):
Right Matt Taylor, you can catch you tomorrow. The voice
of the Colts, Colts and the Jags. Matt, thank you
so much, have a great weekend, have a great goal tomorrow.
Thank you.

Speaker 5 (43:51):
I appreciate you. Bob, have a great rest of the night.

Speaker 1 (43:53):
Thank you, My thanks to all of our great stations
around the state. Thanks to Caleb Zuber and to Nathaniel Finn.
