Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Indiana Sports Talk. I'm Mark Dyton, thank you for
joining me this Friday night in the Hoosier State, and
Thaniel Finch about to have a scoreboard update. Looks like
a busy one. All thirty teams in action in Major
League Baseball, some finals around minor league baseball locally, but
the Indianapolis Indians stuck in a tight one in a
big win for the Indiana Fever. Let's get Nathaniel Finch's
thoughts on the latest scoreboard update.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yes, Mark Dyton, a busy update in store for you.
I'm Nathaniel Finch. A pleasure to be with you. Ethan Patterson,
our producer from our downtown Indianapolis studios keeping a close
sign like you mentioned on the Indianapolis Indians game, the
bases are loaded, it is tied five to five, top
of the tenth innings. We'll keep you updated as that

(00:43):
one continues, but let's start with the big game from
tonight down in Dallas.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Final score Feaver eighty eight, Wings seventy eight. It's a
big tub of a big tea and now you know
the Fever have won four in a row for the.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
First time this year.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
That is John Nolan the Fever Radio Network beating the
Wings and Page Becker's the top pick in this year's
draft by ten points. Thanks to Kelsey Mitchell. She scored
twenty three. Aery McDonald had fifteen, the point guard filling
in for Caitlin Clark, who just missed her sixth straight
game with a growing injury. Still no timetable for return.

(01:23):
Double doubles from both Natasha Howard and a Leah Boston.
A big tough stretch on the schedule for Indiana, of course.
In Dallas tonight, two days from now, they play in Seattle.
They stay out West for a few more, playing back
to back to back the next few days only a
day's rest. You play every other day. It's gonna be
a tough one for the Fever coming up. And we'll

(01:43):
see when Caitlin Clark returns. How About in Major League Baseball,
big time win down at Great American Ballpark.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
It's in the year.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Alive, second of the year here.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
They end up winning three to two.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
It was a tight one there late, but the Reds
beat the Braves. The series now even, and both teams
traveled down to Bristol. The Bristol Motor Speedway should be
a fun one tomorrow they turned the speedway into a
baseball diamond that tomorrow, of course, the Reds and Braves.
Today the Cubs also win, defeating the Orioles one to zero.

(02:27):
The final there the Guardians in extra innings. It took ten.
They got it done three to two, defeating the Twins.
The Tigers fall in Philadelphia five to four is the
final score there. Looking at some Midwest games currently in action,
the White Sox with a three to zero lead in
LA against the Angels, bottom of the fifth there we

(02:48):
go and the Cardinals, who did lead one nothing last
time I spoke to you, now trailing four to one.
Coach level, not happy with that one. We finished the
fifth inning there in Minor League baseball, last I told
you it was five to five and the bases were loaded. Well,
the bases are no longer loaded. Runners on the corners
three crossed the plate for the Indians eight to five.

(03:11):
The tribe with the lead top of the tenth inning.
Will keep you updated there, but certainly looking good. Howard
Killman could likely give us a call, depending on how
that one finishes out. The South Bend Cubs in High
A they fall five to three Quad Cities with the
win there and then in Fort Wayne, the ten Caps
can't win either, nine to two Great Lakes with the
victory over Fort Wayne. Let's take a look at some

(03:35):
Indianapolis Colts news last night, the first ever night practice
at Grand Park in Westfield, and Shane Steichen, the Colt
head coach, liked what he saw from both of his quarterbacks.
He said, they both playing pretty well.

Speaker 5 (03:51):
Both have been doing a really good job. It's been
both you know. Both of them have you know, made
plays at a high level the last couple of days,
and that's what you want to see. You want to
see growth, you want to see completions, want to see
the offense moving up and down the field. So both
have been doing really good.

Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yet that's a quarterback battle, of course, between Anthony Richardson
and Daniel Jones. Here is sdike In talking about the former.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
I think everything's cleaner right now. He's playing at a
high level. He's making good decisions with the football, taking
the completions when needed.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
So it's been a long It's not the only quarterback
battle going on in West Lafayette.

Speaker 6 (04:20):
They've all physically improved themselves. It'd be a great battle
here the next couple of weeks, see how it plays out.
And you know, there's all those things you look at
on taking care of the ball and executing the offense
and making the smart play and being able to do
some quarterback run game and the decision making that goes
along with that, the leadership qualities. We'll see how it
plays out here the next.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Seven weeks Saniana Sports Talk. I'm Mark Dyked and Nathaniel Finch.
Thank you for the scoreboard update. Kevin Bowen of the
fan and going to join us a little bit later
in about next fifteen minutes or so, but right now
on the hot line, none other than Mike Moss, the
Fort Wayne ten Caps joins us. Mike appreciate the time,
and it was a tough one for Fort Wayne. But
actually we'll get to the game in just a second.

(04:59):
I want to to talk to you, and I was
actually hoping you would call tonight after the game because
obviously the MLB trade deadline took place in Fort Wayne.
A big part of what happened in the trade deadline,
Brandon Butterworth, arguably the TinCaps best hitter all season long,
traded by the Padres organization to the Orioles as part
of an eight player deal. Your thoughts on the move

(05:20):
and Brandon butterwor what he brought to the table and
what he will bring to the table now that he
heads to Baltimore.

Speaker 7 (05:26):
Mark I had a number of nicknames for Brandon Butterworth Instigator,
rabble rouser, cheerleader. He has an infectious bit about him
when he tries to get the crowd going, get his
teammates going.

Speaker 8 (05:43):
His trademark is when he gets a.

Speaker 7 (05:45):
Base hit, usually just before first base or just after
he rounds first base, his helmet comes off. Yeah, he's
tied for the team leading home runs with eleven and
he's I believe six of those her home runs in July. Unfortunately,
he's now member the Baltimore Orio organization. I think he's

(06:06):
with their High eight team in Aberdeen, the IronBirds.

Speaker 8 (06:10):
We lose him.

Speaker 7 (06:11):
And here's the other funny part the way baseball goes.
He had taken part in infield practice and batting practice
and finds out roughly around five point thirty that he's
been traded ten thirty yesterday morning, Leo Devrees the number
three prospect in minor league baseball, He's involved in a
big trade between the Padres and the Athletics. Ironically, he

(06:33):
ends up staying in the Midwest League. He's over up
in Lancing with the lug Nuts. He's played twice for Lancing,
He's gotten hits in both games, and the Lancing's won
both games. Then those two are involved in trades, and
then today we lose two of our starting pitchers and

(06:55):
the best closer I think possibly in minor league baseball
in Garrett Hawkins.

Speaker 8 (07:00):
We are both all.

Speaker 7 (07:00):
Promoted to double A San Antonio quick word on Hawkins.
He won two nights ago in relief. He's eight and
one on the year, eight for eight and save opportunities.
He's retired the last twenty one batters he's faced. He
is not allowed to run in.

Speaker 8 (07:15):
His last thirty four innings.

Speaker 7 (07:18):
That's across twenty six outings going back to April twenty third.
It's the longest consecutive scoreless inning in outing streak in
major or minor league baseball since twenty fourteen, and the
longest Enfranchise history. He's got a one point four to
three ERA and a point sixty eight whip and teams
are only hitting one to sixteen against him this year.

Speaker 8 (07:39):
So you lose our.

Speaker 7 (07:39):
Best closer, our two best starting pitchers, our two best
offensive players, and we only had one extra non pitcher
on the roster last night. We're getting some more reinforcements
from either Lake Alison or or from within the Padres system,
but it's also showing on the field. We got whack

(08:00):
tonight eleven. I'm sorry, we got whack tonight nine to
two in front of over seventy five hundred fans. Last
night we lost two nothing, getting only two hits in
front of eight thousand and nine fans, second largest crowd
of the year. We had forty eight hundred fans. The
night before that, we had sixty five hundred fans. On

(08:22):
Tuesday night in the series opener, we got shut out,
then six nothing. Tin capsanow seventeen and seventeen in the
second half. They're forty eight and fifty one overall, and
they're three and a half games out of a playoff spot,
and we've only got, let's see what thirty two games
left to try to make up the deficit, and we're
playing the past. The hottest team in the Midwest League

(08:43):
right now in Great Lakes. They won ten of their
last twelve, and the other team that's three and a
half games ahead of us, and even there behind West Michigan,
who's only won sixty seven games this year overall. So
we're getting some reinforcements. We wish the other guy as
well that it'll be there, but you know, Derees and
Butterworth have been traded.

Speaker 8 (09:04):
Brandon's going to be a good player.

Speaker 9 (09:06):
You got to tell.

Speaker 7 (09:07):
He's just got that instinct and he has a desire
to win. He developed some power and he's even played
some of the outfield. He's a shortstop by trade, but
he's played short stop, second base, and both center and
left field for us this year. I think he's got
a bright future. Debrees is only eighteen years old. He's

(09:27):
got a bright future. And then the pitchers. It's a
shame you lose some of your best talent, but that's
what minor league baseball is all about. You play well,
you developed, you get promoted with ultimate hopes of playing
in the big league someday. And tonight we had our
two hundred and thirty fifth player in franchise history make
it to the big leagues, and outfitter Jacob Marcy was

(09:49):
just here a couple of years ago playing for Miami,
so We've had a nice run here. We started the
franchise in nineteen ninety three, we won one Midwest League
Championship in the finals two other times, and the fans
are four wind have been phenomenal. Let's say, over seventy
five hundred and night over eight thousand last night. They

(10:10):
still support this team, tribute to the city, and we
still have let's see, fourteen home games left in the
season and we'll see what happens over the final four
and a half weeks.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Mike, appreciate the update. Thank you so much, and we
will talk to you another time. Thank you so much
for the update. And yeah, lots of moving and shaking
going on with the MLB trade deadline. Kevin bones Indiana.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
This much den point win for the Indiana Fever eighty
eight to seven eighth the final tonight in Dallas. I'm
Nathaniel Fincher score, but update you hear from me every
fifteen minutes. Stephanie White, the Fever head coach, not quite
satisfied with this one, but of course happy with the
final and the fourth straight win for Indiana find in
different ways.

Speaker 10 (10:51):
You know, I didn't feel like we played particularly well tonight,
but you know, finding ways to get wins. And that's
going on some scoring bursts. That's being able to lie
on multiple players, getting stops when needed, you know, making
adjustments and continuing to grow.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Kelsey Mitchell leading the team once again in scoring twenty
three points. It was her sixteenth game this year scoring
twenty or more. Pretty impressive there from Mitchell. Aery McDonald
next with fifteen points. The unsung hero, as Mitchell called
her with a nice little outing there, instead of Caitlin Clark,
who has missed now six straight games, still unsure of

(11:28):
her timeline. Four return double doubles for both Natasha Howard
and Aliah Boston, the four and five in the lineup,
and the Fever win eighty eight to seventy eight. Talk
about some Major League baseball. A couple of runs scored
here in Anaheim. It's the White Sox and the Angels,
and currently Chicago with the four to two lead top
of the sixth inning. There, the Cardinals have allowed four straight.

(11:51):
The Padres now leading four to one top of the seventh.
We go in San Diego earlier this afternoon, the Cincinnati
Reds get a bit win three to two, the final
over the Braves. The Cubs shut out the Orioles one
to zero. The final mark who needs starting pitching? Kate
Horton with five great innings today, one nothing Cubs, and

(12:12):
finally the Guardians defeat the Twins three to two. It
took ten innings. They get it done in Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Nathaniel Finch joining me now the co host of the
Fan Morning Show on ninety three, five and seven to
five The Fan locally here in Indianapolis. He covers the Colts.
He's a friend of mine, yours truly.

Speaker 8 (12:27):
He is.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
Kevin Bowen. How are you doing this evening, sir?

Speaker 9 (12:30):
I'm good.

Speaker 8 (12:31):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (12:31):
I'm doing well. I was gonna say. I was like,
I know we have our feuds with our Reds and
Cubs rivalries, but I've offered you Blue Power Aide, which
is apparently is the key to your heart. As I
found out earlier. This week's a Blue Poweraide. Kevin's best friend.
And uh yeah, I think we're on good terms right
now at.

Speaker 9 (12:47):
Blue Power Aide. So to cheating out, Fredo Bacon, Tiger Woods,
a little golf, Yeah.

Speaker 8 (12:53):
The Notre Dame.

Speaker 9 (12:54):
If you if you check some of those boxes, watch out, Maddie.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Okay, all right, all right, well you've been out at
Colts camp. You were actually out there last night, probably
bleary eyed still because that was a late practice. Let's
just start their blanket statement here. Your thoughts on the
night practice and how it went for the Colts last night.

Speaker 9 (13:10):
Well, first, I thought it was super entertaining.

Speaker 11 (13:12):
Shantaken kind of came out with this idea, and I
thought it was a really good idea, just to have,
you know, pretty much a eleven on eleven scrimmage for
two hours. I mean, they definitely did a little bit
of special team stuff, but it was very active. A
ton of throwing Daniel Jones through twenty seven passes and
team drill Dancy and Richardson through nineteen.

Speaker 9 (13:31):
For those unfamiliar with how.

Speaker 11 (13:33):
Camp works, those are big numbers for a singular day.
I'd say early on the quarterbacks, how a lot of
fire were, especially Richardson's the deep ball. Defensively, though they
definitely had some moments as practice moved along. Laugh to Lotsu,
the first round pick from not this past year of
the year before, he was really good late in practice,
had some big pass rushing in full pads. So again

(13:54):
I thought it was a really entertaining night. Tyler Warren
had quite the highlight of a one hited grab over
the miiddle and probably the most active training camp practice,
and I think one the coaches also kind of holding
important regard in terms of their evaluations.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
Well, he was gonna start with quarterbacks, but since he
brought him up by name, let's start there. Tyler Warren
his catch last night. Just how has his camp looked,
because it seems like he's getting the oohz and o's
quite a bit out there at Westfield. Your thoughts on
his rookie camp so far.

Speaker 9 (14:22):
Yeah, I think about what I expected.

Speaker 11 (14:25):
I don't want to sound like that's like underwhelming. I mean,
he just was that good in college. If anybody watched
Penn State last year, they knew full well he was
a stud, flat out and can do a variety of things,
and probably singularly.

Speaker 9 (14:37):
Mark, it's just that catch.

Speaker 11 (14:39):
Radio's like tight ends are not built to have the
type of catching ability that he does. He's bailed out
both quarterbacks last night. He bailed out Daniel Jones. For
those that haven't seen the highlight, it was tremendous the
way he consorted his body, you know, kind of almost
stopped the pass with his left hand and then corralled
it with his right while going to the ground, kaling.

Speaker 9 (14:58):
Carlids the linemacer felt back. I mean, there's nothing else
he could have done.

Speaker 11 (15:01):
He just had unbelievable coverage.

Speaker 9 (15:04):
On the play.

Speaker 11 (15:05):
So spectacular from Warren. Again, he's a great, great talent,
there's no debating that. And he's gonna play, I think,
a very important role, very versatile role for the team,
I think from day one.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
All right, let's stick with this for a second, cause
I've been kind of festering with this question in my head.
As far as the offensive weapons go. It doesn't matter
who the quarterback is right now. Now, I don't need
yardage or anything like that. But who do you think,
in order from skill positions will lead this team in receiving?

Speaker 9 (15:35):
Yards are catches.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
Yards, So let's go yards. You don't have to put
a number on it, but let's just go yards.

Speaker 11 (15:40):
Yeah, boy, that's tough, just because you know, guy like
Alex Pearce for example, can really hear some things with
how terrific of a big play player he is. The
boy I'll go. I think it'll be close. I will
go with those first three wide outs.

Speaker 9 (15:59):
I might put Downs.

Speaker 11 (16:02):
You know, the thing is, if Downs can play seventeen games,
he's gonna catch so many balls, He's just naturally gonna
be up there. I'll go, I'll go Pierce, Pittman, Downs, Warrens.
You know, it's just tough for tight ends to you know,
generate a ton of yards. But I think it'll be
pretty balanced. I don't know if I'd be overwhelming. They're

(16:23):
running to draft the Colts fantasy wide out or pass
catcher just because.

Speaker 9 (16:27):
You know, Warren might be exception because they might useilize
in some short yardage and need get some rushing touchdowns
that way. But boy, that's a that's a good question.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Well, you know, the fantasy questions are going to start
coming fast quick because the fantasy drafts are going to
get underway. You're gonna get them all. In your mentions,
who should I draft? Who should I take? You're saying
kind of maybe step aside from when it comes to
Colts cult skill guys.

Speaker 11 (16:47):
Right, Yeah, And you know, isn't the old adage of
like what about quarterback? You know that's kind of like
a tiebreaker. I feel like, so factor that into all.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
Right, let's get to the quarterback competition. Obviously, that is
what all eyes are on. Anthony Richardson versus Daniel Jones.
You said it was pretty balanced last night. Is there
anyone that has the edge in your mind or where
Shane Steichen's head might be as we can near the
preseason opener, you know, I probably did the.

Speaker 9 (17:10):
Slight edge so Richardson.

Speaker 11 (17:11):
So far. I think the fact that he is probably
been a little bit more consistent underneath than he has
been the first two years has to be pretty encouraging.
And you know, I also feel like the fact that
he's participated this much is something I won't overlook either.
I mean, you think about where he was at exiting
in the spring, you know, seven practices in. I mean

(17:34):
you really have to be watching closely to see a
little bit of scale back stuff in the individual period.

Speaker 9 (17:39):
That's really it.

Speaker 11 (17:40):
I mean, he's taking all the team reps that they've
wanted to give him, so you know, Tyd goes the incumbent,
ty goes the runner. Greg great Charge dropped the right
Cup analogy with us earlier today about retaining the Cup
that probably eight percent of our audience even understood. But yeah,
I kind of understood what Rake was saying, and that
you know, Jones has probably got to go out and

(18:00):
win it, and he definitely has not done that.

Speaker 9 (18:03):
I will commend both quarterbacks.

Speaker 11 (18:04):
We're you know, probably three straight practices now where I
don't think either has been picked off in eleven on
eleven period, and.

Speaker 9 (18:15):
The full pads have been on.

Speaker 11 (18:16):
So that is something that I think, you know, no
matter what you think about the quarterback position, you gotta
feel good about that.

Speaker 9 (18:23):
So I think that's been an encouraging sign as well.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
Preseason over is on Thursday against the Ravens, You've got
Shane stykeing giving who at quarterback the nod?

Speaker 11 (18:35):
Yeah, I assume he will give one quarterback the first run,
you know, this Thursday, the other quarterback to run you know,
next Saturday against Green Bay. That would be my guess. Now,
if he wants to obviously pick one, then you know,
by all means commit to one, you know, heavily in
the game reps.

Speaker 12 (18:57):
I don't know.

Speaker 9 (18:58):
I mean, I do think in Stikeen's.

Speaker 11 (19:00):
Eyes, he's more of the Daniel Jones probably believer than
most want to admit or maybe with care to admit.
But yeah, you know, I guess the first one I
don't know. Maybe you go with Richardson first and he
was the incumbent, But as long as you're kind of
sticking to the same plan of you're gonna split them,
I don't think it matters a ton. You know, one

(19:23):
issue you run into, especially with the teams like Baltimore
and Green Bay, they might be a little bit more
hesitant on playing their starters against you just because they're
good and they have a lot of retention and you know,
things like that. So that might be a one bummer
from it. But yeah, I don't know, maybe you start
Richardson for a quarter this week and then maybe next week,
you know, it's whatever.

Speaker 9 (19:43):
Daniel Jones for a quarter against Green Bay.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Had Joel A. Erickson on earlier this evening of The
Indie Star. He threw out the option of Shane Stike
and going series by series with Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.
Your thoughts on that.

Speaker 9 (19:57):
Yeah, yeah, I can hear Joel out.

Speaker 11 (19:59):
From the standpoint of life, what about do you want
them to play with the same starters, you know, And
that's what we have seen in camp. They really have
you know, not gone seriously series, but like last night,
for example, Richardson or Jones got the first hour with
the starters. Richardson got the second hour with the starters.
But in preseason games, you know, you know, do you
need to see quit Nelson into the second quarter of

(20:19):
these games?

Speaker 9 (20:20):
Probably not.

Speaker 11 (20:21):
So if you want to say to Nelson, hey man,
can you give me two series of work or four
series of work?

Speaker 9 (20:26):
Then you know.

Speaker 11 (20:26):
I can understand rotating, and I partly kind of likes
letting a quarterback get into some sort of rhythm, but bolly,
this is just quarterback competition so hard, just because there's
so many different complexities to it. And I can hear
Joel out and I can also hear the other side
of it.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
I think I know where you stand on this, But
are you a proponent of playing either or both of
those guys into the third quarter of every preseason game?

Speaker 8 (20:51):
Oh yeah, hell yeah.

Speaker 11 (20:53):
But I got to live in reality here. I can't
imagine they would do that. But yes, I mean, you know,
one thing to point out that kind of I think
is backing some of my thought process with this market
is they only have two joint practices this year. I
think last year they might have had four. So, like,
if you think these joint practices are gospel. Well you've

(21:13):
cut those in half this year, so don't you want
to get you know, even more preseason playing time? And
I mean the week one drought, and both these guys
have been you know, inconsistent, too bad in their NFL careers. Yes,
played them, play them, play them. I would happily play
them in the third quarter of each game. But again,
I'll probably live in a dose of reality with that,

(21:34):
you know, and a lot of people will push back
in the third game.

Speaker 8 (21:36):
You know, remember we.

Speaker 9 (21:37):
Only have three preseason games.

Speaker 11 (21:38):
Now we don't have four, so to me, the third one,
I mean, that's that is dress rehearsal, that's regular season.
I mean you don't play a regar season game for
two more weeks after that, so you know that is
a I mean old days, I mean I and I'll
say old days. Andrew Luck, I mean, I bet there
are preseason games where.

Speaker 9 (21:54):
Andrew Luck through twenty passes.

Speaker 11 (21:55):
I mean, can you imagine a quarterback like Andrew lu
Luck throwing twenty passes in today's NFL?

Speaker 9 (22:00):
You know you just wouldn't see it.

Speaker 11 (22:01):
So yes, I would endorse that and sign off on
it majorly.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
Hanging there keV, I gotta get a scoreboard update from
Nathaniel's Indiana Sports Talk on Mark Dyke.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
Hey, I'm Nathaniel Finch. This is my penultimate scoreboard update.
You hear from me every fifteen minutes. Let's talk about
some Major League Baseball. Ow are two Midwest games currently
in action. Top of the seventh in Anaheim, the White
Sucks with a two run edge over the Angels that
four to two top of the seventh, will keep an
eye on that. And then the Cardinals, after leading by

(22:32):
a run for the majority of this game, now down
four to one the Padres at home, they lead Saint
Louis top of the eighth inning there. As far as
the games that have already concluded, the Reds defeat the
Braves three to two the final there. Those two teams
head to the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee tomorrow for
the MLB's Speedway Classic. Should be fun. The Cubs shut

(22:54):
out the Orioles a one to zero win. Cade Horton
great five inning Star four the Cubs. The Phillies defeat
the Tigers, this one in Philadelphia, five to four the
final there. Finally, the Guardians at home, It took an
extra inning, but through ten three to two. The final
the Guardians with the walk off over the Twins. Here

(23:14):
is how it sounded.

Speaker 4 (23:16):
Swung on light drive past to left center ball games,
tile Man Turnle with our rip job up the ally.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
And left center Cleaveland's fifth.

Speaker 8 (23:27):
Walk off win.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
That's Guardians Television, big time win. They're as far as
minor league baseball. How about the Tribe, the Indianapolis Indians
in extra innings, they put up three in the top
of the tenth, eight to five winners in Iowa over
the Cubs Triple A team. Also in High A ball,
the South Bend Cubs fall five to three at home

(23:49):
against Quad Cities, and the four Wayne Tin Camps lose
nine to two against the Great Lakes Loons.

Speaker 1 (23:55):
Nathaniel Finch, Thanks Nathaniel, ke Mark Dyton here, Kevin Bone
to the fan, gracious with his time staying up late
with me to talk Colts. One more quick thought on
the QB competition before we go elsewhere, keV. I would hope.
I would hope between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, we're
seeing more of their playing time in preseason than we
are of Jason Beaner. Riley Leonard.

Speaker 8 (24:16):
Well, yeah, yes, if we're.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
Doing a true quarterback competition here, right, But you.

Speaker 11 (24:21):
Know, again it gets into a little bit of like
and I'm speaking more from the coach of like, well,
you know, you could you can you really evaluate them
when they're not out there with the starter's now granted
one of them obviously he's been at the second unit
all throughout camp here, so you know, I'll go back
to Chris Slower's words. And I asked Ballut on the
you know, on report day training camp, Hey, you know,
what do you view as preseason playing time in terms

(24:42):
of the.

Speaker 9 (24:42):
Evaluation meter if you will?

Speaker 11 (24:44):
And these guys and Ballad was adamant it was a critical,
you know, piece of the evaluation. So you know, if
he thinks that we await Shane Siken's words on it,
I will probably have to see actions more than words.

Speaker 9 (24:55):
Knowing psych in but uh yes I do.

Speaker 8 (24:59):
Yeah, trust you and.

Speaker 9 (25:00):
I are on the same page all right.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Outside the quarterback competition, another one that's got a lot
of eyes on it is the kicking competition between Spencer
Strader and Max Triheo. How's that going?

Speaker 8 (25:10):
Yeah, I think.

Speaker 11 (25:11):
Spencer's definitely the leader. I thought Thursday night, if you
needed separation, I think you've got it. I want to
say Maddox missed three of his sixth and Spencer only
missed one and that was off the upright, So again,
that's another one.

Speaker 9 (25:24):
Probably more than quarterback.

Speaker 11 (25:25):
I think Madix Trio, the undrafted kid this past year,
would need to overwhelmingly be better than Spencer Schrader, the
undrafted guy from the year prior to this staff brought back,
and honestly, I think it was a big reason why
they cut Matt Gay. So yes, I will say Spencer
Shrader is definitely your your kicker leader. I don't know

(25:45):
if that necessarily like makes me sleep great at night though,
given the lack of resume, there's a lot of proving
needed to be done, but yes, I would call.

Speaker 9 (25:53):
Him the leader.

Speaker 1 (25:54):
That kind of goes into my next question. Your I
know we haven't played a preseason game yet, but your
comfortability level of the kicker competition compared to last year
with Matt Gay.

Speaker 8 (26:04):
Oh boy.

Speaker 11 (26:07):
You know the thing about Matt Gay is like, yes,
he missed obviously fifty and longer a lot, but you
know he didn't miss a kick inside of fifty. I mean,
you know, when you think about it and you know
you're your bears have been this before. Like you think
about kicker issues in the league, you a lot of
it is are you starting to missing the forties? Are
you missing extra points? Go back to Adam Vnentarian twenty nineteen.

(26:27):
You know that's when it really went awry for him.
So yes, you know, fifty and longer. I kind of
look at it as like an NBA three pointer. Nowadays
seemingly everybody can do it, but you know, it still
is a hair of a you know, luxury item. So
you know, Spencer Shrader is wired very uniquely. He's got

(26:49):
a very impressive mental makeup. He is a huge positive thinker.
You know, I watched him at Notre Dame and his
one season there make some kicks I thought there's no
chance in the world he's gonna make, and then miss
him kicks that I.

Speaker 9 (27:00):
Thought for sure he would make. So yeah, I don't
feel great about it.

Speaker 11 (27:05):
Granted, you know, sain Saekon has always been one that
seemingly likes to go for it more than most.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
Kevin Bowen of the Fan joining me on Indiana Sports Talk.
Kevin Let's puk quarterback let's go kicking a side standouts
on either side at camp that maybe you didn't necessarily
have on your pen and paper heading into it.

Speaker 11 (27:23):
Yeah, I'd say offensively a god the name of Anthony
Gould for those that have been out of practice. He's
number six, a fifth round pick two years ago out
of Oregon State. He's Josh downs Is backup in the slot.
He maybe has caught the most balls in eleven on
eleven periods. He probably will be, if not both punt
and kick returner, he'll probably.

Speaker 9 (27:42):
Do at least one of those duties. So I would
say him.

Speaker 11 (27:48):
Defensively, you know, probably the secondary.

Speaker 9 (27:52):
I know we've talked abut him lot.

Speaker 10 (27:53):
It is.

Speaker 9 (27:54):
It is probably justin wall. He just the third round
pick out of Minnesota. It's just, you know, a third round.

Speaker 11 (27:58):
Pick at a decently crowded position, and for him to
walk in and like have taken pretty much every starting
rep i'd say through seven practices is not a given.
So that's a big role in today's NFL. You know that,
that third defensive back.

Speaker 8 (28:10):
So I'll go there.

Speaker 11 (28:12):
Joe Bacchi's a linebacker number forty eight that's played a
lot for zay Or Franklin. With Franklin missing all off
camp so far had some Loui Ana Roumo history in Cincinnati.
Didn't play a lot defensively, but at least was on
the team, and he's had some nice moments as well.
So yeah, those are some things that stand out.

Speaker 1 (28:30):
Who has showed up in camp that like has struggled
so far that you're kind of like, ooh, boys, they
need to kind of step it up here.

Speaker 11 (28:37):
Yeah, I mean offensively that eighty minus a really rough start,
but a much better second week. I thought last night
was by far his best eleven on eleven practice of camp.
I thought the pass rush had been a hair quiet
early in camp, but again they got going a little
bit last night without DeForest Buckner. You know, it's hard
to truly evaluate the old line, but I do want

(28:58):
to see the center, you know, back Tanna Portoline and
Danny Pincer and then Matt Gonzalvas. He will be the
right guard against other teams. You know, how does that
look against you know, there was a little leakage there
at times last.

Speaker 9 (29:09):
Night I thought more right guard than at center.

Speaker 11 (29:14):
And then you know, lately Mark I would say the
defense hasn't had as much playmaking as they did early on.
Now the corner group has been banged up, but just you.

Speaker 9 (29:23):
Know what does that look like?

Speaker 11 (29:24):
Because if you you should be feasting I think against
these quarterbacks and if you're not, you.

Speaker 8 (29:29):
Know what does that mean for whatever?

Speaker 11 (29:31):
Toa Mahomes, Stafford Stroud. You know some of these Herbert,
you know some of these quarterbacks that await come regular season.

Speaker 1 (29:38):
The additions of cam Binmen, Shaveri's Ward in the secondary
in the offseason, those seem to be paying off immensely
in training camp so far, are they not?

Speaker 11 (29:47):
Yeah? I mean I think with Ward, I mean you
definitely see, you know, the ability to be a top
flight outside corner. I'm gonna lock you up, shadow you
that sort of thing, you know, buying them definitely some
play making over the middle of the field. Now depth
of safety is a question. So you really need Cambine
them stay healthy. You really need Nick Cross, I think
to stay healthy as well. So yeah, I would say

(30:11):
you are feeling that. I think you're feeling man Rumo's
overall philosophy a lot like in general, the coverage is stickier.
There's an attempt in wanting to be you know a
little bit more pressed man and things like that, and
honestly a lot of the completions I feel like I
see at times that are big plays are more in
zone than they are in Man, which you know.

Speaker 9 (30:29):
I think is a welcome, you know, change of pace.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
Just another minute or two with Kevin. Kevin review the
Drone show from last night out of Camp well outstanding.

Speaker 11 (30:38):
Like when I when I said at the start, man,
it was entertaining night I met at the end, I mean,
if you stayed to the end, you.

Speaker 9 (30:45):
Literally got fireworks. And then the light show was awesome.

Speaker 11 (30:48):
They had a message, uh, you know, honoring Jim Irsad,
had a really cool horseshoe like.

Speaker 9 (30:54):
It was really well done.

Speaker 11 (30:56):
So, you know, by all accounts say, I think this
is something that as much as I didn't love being
in Westfield till midnight and having to turn around for
the morning show, I'm in the minority.

Speaker 9 (31:06):
That was a great night.

Speaker 11 (31:06):
That's something they need to do again, especially if you're
gonna have a little bit of the limited joint practices.
You know, the temporary lights worked out great. They primarily
we just on one field last night because of that.

Speaker 9 (31:16):
But again, the action was lively.

Speaker 11 (31:18):
And I thought the fan experience was good as well.
So you know the Colts really do training camp well.
I you know, some might say, well, you're carrying the
Colts water. I mean, they do training camp very well.

Speaker 9 (31:30):
The access is tremendous. I know you've been there with
the girls before. A family you know, can have a
great time there.

Speaker 11 (31:36):
It's super affordable, borderline free outside of I guess five
bucks for parking. So yeah, you really get a first class,
very up close experience at training camp and that is.

Speaker 9 (31:47):
Not the norm in today's NFL.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
Last one for me. You're bleary eyed, you're tired, you
had a long night out at Westfield. But are you
making that trek out to West Lafayette to see Charlie
Woods tee it up?

Speaker 8 (32:00):
Boy?

Speaker 9 (32:00):
If I he imagine a look on Maddie's face. So
I told her, yeah, I'm gonna go. Yeah, I did
drive an hour and a half to go watch a
sixteen year old hit a golf ball. I can only
imagine her reaction to that.

Speaker 11 (32:10):
So sadly I've not But if shout out today he
got a couple of listeners boots on the ground there
they're sending me whole by whole.

Speaker 9 (32:15):
Updates pictures videos.

Speaker 11 (32:17):
Boy, I feel like I'm like back in high school
tracking her back, and I guess junior high tracking my
brother and then when I couldn't be at one of
his golf tournaments.

Speaker 9 (32:24):
So yeah, shout out.

Speaker 11 (32:26):
To young Charlie Woods and you know, the the Tim House,
the Andrews SAPs, the Cole Bradley's a Purdue golf program.

Speaker 9 (32:32):
They need to, you know, send the bag Charlie Woods
his way after his effort on their home courses this
past week.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
I need John Harold giving like minute by minute updates
on Charlie Woods. That's what we need here.

Speaker 11 (32:44):
Well, if Greg Grayshaw's not boots on the ground as
I right now, what are we really doing here right exactly?

Speaker 1 (32:50):
Kevin Bowen, thank you for joining me, sir. You can
always catch him on the fan at Kevin at cabow
in ten seventy on Twitter, and Monday through Friday on
the Fan Morning Show on nine through five seven five
Fan Kevin, have a great weekend. Thank you for joining me,
my friend Mark, Thank you for all you do.

Speaker 9 (33:05):
Brother Holly. We'll see you on Monday.

Speaker 1 (33:07):
Love that man. Get some sleep, Kevin, Rosie and Max
Nija madd he needs you as well get some sleep.
That man had a long twenty four hours out at
Westfield doing the morning show today, hanging out with me
near the end of the night, so appreciate him joining
us there. You can always hear him again Monday through
Friday night through five one oh seven five Fan the
Fan morning show Kevin James and Jeff and I'm the
producer their occasional co host as well. One more scoreboard

(33:30):
update from Nathaniel Finch, hopefully going to hear from Brendan
King as well to recap the South Bend Cubs in
the MLB trade deadline. It is Indiana Sports Talk. I'm
Mark Dyton, Wings seventy eight. It's a big tub of
a big tea and now you know the Fever have
one four in a row for the first time this year.
It is John No.

Speaker 2 (33:51):
One from the Fever Radio Network. I'm Nathaniel Finch with
your final scoreboard update of the evening. Let's first peruse
through that WNBA game. The Fever without Caitlin Clark for
the sixth straight game. Get it done in Dallas eighty
eight to seventy eight. You heard the final there, Indiana
hangs on to win. Kelsey Mitchell twenty three points to.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
Lead the game in scoring.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
Airy McDonald added fifteen points. Double doubles from both Natasha
Howard and Elijah Boston. Indiana the day off tomorrow, though
they travel to Seattle. That's their opponent for Sunday night.
They play every other day basically for the next week
and a half on the West Coast. A tough stretch
for the Fever, but now four games above five hundred
for the first time in over a decade. Big time

(34:35):
win for Indiana. Let's talk about some scores in Major
League Baseball. The two Midwest games currently in action. These
out on the West Coast. The Cardinals trail the Padres
four to one, top of the night, there just three
outs left.

Speaker 1 (34:48):
In that game.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
The White Sox lead the Angels four to two in Anaheim,
bottom of the seventh in that one. Will keep you
updated there as well as far as the scores that
have already gone. Final They're Reds beat the Braves this
afternoon three to two. The Cubs shut out the Orioles
won nothing the final there, the Guardians in extra innings
defeat the Twins three to two the final, and finally,

(35:11):
the Tigers unable to beat the Phillies today five to four.
The final in Philadelphia eight to five. The Indians defeat
the Iowa Cubs and Triple A Ball, and then losses
for both the South Bend Cubs and Fort Wayne Tin
Camps in Hi A.

Speaker 1 (35:25):
Nathaniel Finch, thank you for all your work today, young
man on the scoreboard updates. He is done for the night,
So thank you for all of the work he did there.
I Mark Dakton with Indiana Sports Talk joining me right
now on the hotline. He told me he'd call, and
he never ceases to amaze me. He is Brendan King,
the voice of the South Ben Cubs. My friend, how
are you doing?

Speaker 12 (35:44):
The buzz is the least I can do on them? Hey,
giving you a buzz is the least I can do
on a promidae.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
So glad to catch up, brother, You're such a mench
I love when you call. I love when I get
to text to you. I love when I get to
talk to you. Tough night for the South Bend Cubs
out there. Quad City seems to have had their number
this week.

Speaker 12 (36:01):
Yeah, you know there's a reason Quad Cities is in
first place in the division. But I'll tell you Mark,
if the Cubs are able to have some success this weekend,
that can really define the rest of the way, because
you know, Quad Cities is a first place club. South
Bend finds a way to win a game last night.
As you said, River Bandits have won three of the
first four. But you know, if the Cubs are able
to win tomorrow and Sunday, you settle for a series

(36:22):
split in six games, which against the first place team
you'll take. And you know, we still got about a
month and a half to go. So if you're just
able to survive this weekend, that can really define the
rest of the way for the Cubs. But they're gonna
have to put up some runs the next few days
because Quad City's pitching is mistabulous.

Speaker 1 (36:37):
Yeah, Quad Cities again getting the five three win over
South Bend to night's South Bend having a rough season.
Want to get your thoughts on the MLB trade deadline.
We talked to Mike Moss earlier this day. Obviously they
had a lot of trades in the San Diego Padres system.
The Cubs made some moves at the major league roster.
I'm trying to keep up with everything did did the
South Bend Cubs lose anyone in some of those trades

(36:59):
that the Cubs pulled off to the major league level.

Speaker 8 (37:02):
We did.

Speaker 12 (37:02):
We lost our right fielder, Ivan Brettauer, VI Rice Pot
five two hundred and sixty pound outfielder, and he was
traded for Taylor Rogers. But you know, Mark, if I'm
gonna comment on the Cubs deadline, you know, I'm not
sure what Mike said about the Padres because obviously the
Fort Wayne TinCaps lost one of the top players in
all minor league baseball, Leo Debreez, who is now up
in Lancing. But you know, for the South Bend Cubs, yeah,

(37:23):
you lose your right fielder, Ivan Brettauer. But man, I
think Jed Hoyer did exactly what he needed to do. Now,
I think two things can be true. Should the Cubs
have probably gone harder at getting a Joe Ryan or
Mackenzie Gore, Yeah, but it would it come at the
price of probably the best three guys in your pharm
system and Owen Casey, Jefferson Rojas and Jackson Wiggins. That's

(37:45):
also true. So I think Jed did a good job
of addressing the needs, which is clearly the bullpen. You
got a good bat in Willie Castro, and you did
it without giving up a ton of prospects, honestly, you know,
with all due respect to Brettauer and Ryan Gallagher, yeah,
those are guys that think the Cubs could afford to lose.
So I think Jed did a good job of again
addressing needs that you got to have while also not

(38:07):
giving up the farm. So that's where I stand.

Speaker 1 (38:10):
Yeah, I'm with you, especially with the uncertainty of Kyle
Tucker's future Owen Casey, you might need him at right
field if Kyle Tucker decides to explore free agency and
go elsewhere. So I'm fine with what they did. What
I've liked more, yes, but I don't also want to
mortgage the future when it comes to that. We got
a little over a minute left, but I wanted to
give you the floor. Obviously lost Ryan Sandberg earlier this week.

(38:31):
You are as a die hard Cub fan as I am.
The floor is yours talk about Ryan Sandberg.

Speaker 12 (38:37):
Ah Man, you know, it's just such a demoralizing loss
for the Cubs community. And you know Ryan Sanberg a
guy that managed in the Cubs Modern league system. He
was the manager of the Peoria Chiefs in the Midwest League,
and of course then he went on to manage the
Iowa Cobbs and then of course the Philadelphia Phillies.

Speaker 9 (38:52):
But I think you know Mark, you know I'm a guy.

Speaker 12 (38:54):
I was born in ninety four, so I was very
young at the back end of Rhino's career. But I'll
get this quick story, and Rhino did a cameo video.
You know how you can rent celebrities to do video
shout out for your family and friends. Years ago, Rhino
did a cameo video for my grandfather, Felix Izzy Dieard,
Cubs fan God rest his soul.

Speaker 8 (39:15):
Literally.

Speaker 12 (39:16):
Felix, at the end of his life was asking to
watch the Rhino video every single day because that's what
it meant to him. And at this latest Cubs convention
back in January, I told Rhino about that, and I
had Rhino sign a picture of my grandfather's name on
the Wrigley Marquis.

Speaker 9 (39:34):
He signed it for my mom and.

Speaker 12 (39:36):
He remembered doing the cameo video. That's how special of
a guy Ryan Samberg was, even for something as little
as a thirty second cameo. He remembered doing it for
my family. And of course I've now met Rhino and
have gotten to work with him in the ORG before
his passing. But just a special guy, special ball player
in a Hall of Famer forever.

Speaker 1 (39:56):
Brendan King, Appreciate the time you have. There are three
names you hear when you're a Cubs fan, no matter
if you new faner Olden, Ryan Sandberg, Ernie Banks, Ron Santo.
You learn those names, you study those names. Unfortunately all
three gone. BKA. Appreciate the time. In love you brother,
have a good one. We'll talk to you later.

Speaker 12 (40:11):
Mark, Love you man.

Speaker 8 (40:11):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (40:12):
All right, that's Brendan King. One more to go and
we're getting out of here. One final time Indiana Sports
Talk on Mark dik again, Thank you so much for
joining me this evening. Hope you're having a fantastic rest
of your Friday as we hit into Saturday in a
few minutes. Appreciate the time always getting the opportunity to
go on Indiana Sports Talk. It is a legendary show
in the state and I always appreciate and him honored

(40:34):
to get the nod when they ask me to host
these things. So appreciate you joining me. Thank you so
much to Kevin Bowen, Joel Erickson, of the Indianapolis Star,
Mike Moss, voice of the Fort Wayington Caps, Eddie Garrison
pre and postgame show host of the Indiana Fever, Brendan
King of the South, BENK cuns All for joining me.
Nathaniel Finch had your scoreboard updates earlier tonight. Evan Patterson
was the producer, So thank you boys for hanging out

(40:56):
with me on this Friday evening. Eddie Garrison will be
in this chair tomorrow and Bob Lovel returns a week
from now plenty to talk about tonight. We had the
Fever get the Wings eighty eight to seventy eight thanks
to Kelsey Mitchell's twenty three points. They've rattled off four
straight wins, so they're looking pretty good in the absence
of Caitlin Clark. They'll next get on the court Sunday

(41:16):
afternoon when they take on the Seattle Storm out in
Seattle in the Pacific Northwest at three o'clock. That's a
three o'clock Eastern tip two o'clock for you Central time
zone folks. That is an ABC game as well. And
then they keep going Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday, Phoenix
Mercury on Thursday, and They finally return home to gain
Bridge Field House next Saturday, August ninth, when they take
on Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky Colts are out

(41:38):
of training camp. They were under the lights last night.
They get back to work tomorrow and Sunday, so they've
got practices the next couple days and then obviously the
preseason opener coming up on Thursday night when they take
on the Baltimore Ravens. Out there curious to see who
gets the nod at quarterback to start that game. How
much will Shane Stike can give Daniel Jones and Anthony
Richardson as far as leeway, and how much will they

(42:00):
play in those preseason games. Lots of questions going into
the preseason. Ope are lots of feet to the fire
for the Colts, So I'm really curious to see how
exactly that all plays out. We've heard that they both
played really well, but you know, if the games start stacking,
the losses start happening, well, the feet on the fire
for the coaching staff in front office start pushing people

(42:20):
to make some rash decisions there. So it's going to
be a very very interesting and intriguing season for the Colts.
Not sure how many wins they're going to get. But
let's get the regular season, let's end that losing streak,
and let's end the losses at Jacksonville streak. If we
can get both of those, I'd say that's a pretty
solid season right there. For the Colts, so well, they
do a quarterback, that's the big question. But obviously want

(42:40):
to see what Tyler Warren can do in his first
NFL action as well, so we've got that. We also
have the Victor Oladipot conversation that we talked about earlier
in the show. He was cited at the Indiana Fever game.
There's some rumors he could land with the Pacers. I
don't know how on board I am with that decision,
but we'll see what they end up doing. They use
a guard, I would rather they go to the young

(43:01):
guys with Andrew Nemhart and whatnot instead of an older
guy like Volodipo who suffered multiple injuries. But we'll see
what they do. There's plenty of stuff to go on.
Pacers obviously losing Tyres Haliburton to an achilles injury and
Myles Turner heading to the Milwaukee Bucks. So they're in
a year of a transition as well, but it should
be a lot of fun again. Thanks Kevin Bone and
Joela Ericson, Brendan King, Eddie Garrison, Nathaniel Finch and Ethan Patterson.

(43:24):
