Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports Talk, brought to
you by Indiana Donor Network. Coming up, let's talk with
Brendan King talks in minor league baseball and also Paul
Andrey and I will recap last night's high school football.
Take a look at what's coming up this weekend and
week number five. Right now that we turn it back
over to the start of the show, It's Network Indiana's
(00:20):
Chase Hodges.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Once again coach a pleasure to be with you on
the Saturday night alongside of producer Caleb Zoover. I'm Jay
Sodge for this Indiana Sports Talk up daytime for a
run through and everything sports around this date of Indiana
and the WNBA. The Indiana Fever have game number one
in Atlanta tomorrow at three pm. We're from Scott Agnes's
moments ago. Game number two will be Tuesday at game
(00:43):
Bridge Field House at seven thirty pm. For the Fever.
Looking to make some noise in the playoff, Stephanie White
says she knows how they can do that.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
I think, more than anything, just our resilience in fortitude.
I mean the fact that we've been able to continue
to put one foot in front of the other and
be competitive and you know, in ball games, it allows
us to have a chance on you know, night in
and night out. You know, we've got to be really disciplined.
You know, we've got to make sure we find the
right shot. On the offensive end, we've got to make
(01:11):
sure the ball continues to move and we get we
get defensive defenses in rotation, and then defensively, we've got
to be solid.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
You know, we can't afford to We've.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Got to protect the paint certainly, but we can't afford
to allow teams to get a lot of threes and
a lot of free throw attempts against us. We're not
we're not matching them threes for threes anymore with the
lineup that we have. So we've really got to guard
the three point line and keep them.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
Off the free throw line.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
For the Fever, game number one tips off tomorrow at
three o'clock in Atlanta against the three seed Atlanta Dream.
The Indianapolis Colts take the field again tomorrow for week
number two is to take on the Denver Broncos. Let's
talk a little bit about the receivers and for Shane
Steike and talk about the receivers being selfless on this
Neear's Colt squad.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
I think that's huge. It's a team first mentality. That's
this business, you know, especially with the scale positions. Always
tell those guys, man, we got one football and we
got about five or six dudes that can go get it.
And I thought, you know, last week, obviously we're moving
on this week. But I thought Daniel did a good
job distributed in the ball and I think all those
guys were involved. Obviously, will it plays up for all
(02:13):
those guys every week and some week it might be
one guy that catches twelve and the next week he
might catch too, And it's just how it plays out sometimes,
and you know that's why you got to be, you know, selfless,
you know at that position for sure.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
And for Daniel Jones, he talks about how he can
set up his guys at the receiver for success.
Speaker 5 (02:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
I think timing is critical. I think being on the
same page a lot of times in zone coverage, it's
you know where's the spot with the most separation, you
know how to turn, how to get upfield. I think
throwing the ball accurately and trying to give them chances
to do that. I think all those things are key,
and uh, you know when you're maximizing the run after
(02:51):
catch plays, you know, I think in man coverage there's
a lot of stuff on the move and keeping guys running,
keeping their speed and giving them chances to do that.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Nicles the Cultial take on the Broncos tomorrow at four
to five against the Broncos, but teams want to know
heading into the matchup. Looking to get to two and
zero to begin the twenty twenty five season in college football,
the Boilers they fail today at home at ross Aid
Stadium thirty three seventeen the final as they fall to
the USC Trojans. A tie ball game still at South
Bend at Notre Dame Stadium thirty four thirty four now
(03:22):
as A and M tags on three just moments ago
the ball State Cardinals they get to win thirty four
twenty nine over FCS New Hampshire and number twenty two Indiana.
The Hoosiers got a big win yesterday over in state
rival Indiana State seventy three nothing the finals score from
Memorial Stadium down in Bloomington, Indiana. For the Saint Louis Cardinals,
(03:42):
they're watching their leads start to dwindled down a little bit.
The Brewers right now having something to say about this game,
six to three. The score in Milwaukee currently in the
bottom of the eighth bust of the bases loaded as
we speak. The Cubs fell five to four at home
to Tampa. The Guardians beat the White Sox three one
up in Cleveland, and the Reds current lea trailt two
to four against the Athletics. The Reds still chasing down
(04:04):
the New York Mets for that sixth and final wildcard spot,
a game and a half back heading into the day.
In Minor League Baseball, the South Bend Cubs and when
ten Caps finished their season up yesterday the Innapolis Indians.
They get the win today over the Iowa Cubs to
tie up Toledo up top of the International League East.
For the Indy eleven they played today as well. They
(04:25):
lost against Rhode Island one nil, the final score from Indianapolis.
Both teams had a red card in this game. We're
down to ten men and own goal by Musa in
the sixty fourth minute is what got the sole goal
of the game. Eleven one point behind Rhode Islands as
we had to the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Welcome back everybody. This is Indiana Sports Soft brought to
you by Indiana Donor Network. Purdue Tonight's great effort losing
to Texas A and M thirty three seventeen the final
with me from the Purdue Sports Network, Rob Blackman. Rob,
thanks for the call. Disappointing loss, but I think a
lot of good things to in store for this Boilermaker team.
Speaker 7 (05:04):
Well, let's start with a fact. You had to say tonight.
It wasn't supposed to be a night game, but that's
how it ended up after a three hour lightning delay
to get something off after this afternoon. But yes, a
lot to be positive about if you're a Purdue football
fan number one, falling down thirty to ten late in
(05:27):
the third quarter, wondering if this team would continue to
fight or unfortunately, as we've seen the last two seasons,
roll over and play dead, and for due did not
do that. They did not roll over and play dead.
They did choose to fight and actually quite frankly made
a game of it. You know, trailing thirty to seventeen,
had the ball in the red zone, an unfortunate interception
(05:48):
there at the two yard line, you know, Produce scores
a touchdown there who knows how that game goes. So
USC really talented team. I'm certain they're going to be
in the top twenty five when the next poll comes
out tomorrow. But the fact that Purdue again showed some
fight certainly far from perfect. You know, three turnovers in
the game, including a Dick six, and the other two
(06:11):
interceptions were thrown in the red zone. Boy, you'd like
to have those those plays back. But it feels like
Purdue is miles ahead of where they were at this
time last year. And I think it's a Purdue fan,
you'll take that.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
I don't think there's any question, and I think it's not.
It's unsurprising to me because you've got a coach who
has demonstrated success, a lot of new faces. I think
we all understand that, and you get victimized sometimes and
those things happen, but you can see not it's just
(06:43):
I understand it's one game, but you can feel and
see that this team is headed in a much much
different direction.
Speaker 7 (06:51):
Absolutely, And look, the turnovers were the killers tonight. They
no mistake about it. You know, three turnovers, all three interceptions,
and again as they mentioned, all three were critical. But look,
to give USC credit, USC was four of four on
fourth down. When's the last time you've seen that? In
the game, goes the great irony. The USC was four
(07:14):
of thirteen on third down. Fourth down, there were four
of four, and they were crucial. All four of those
fourth down conversions ended up leading to points. So the
tip of the gap to USC, and quite frankly, for
those that were watching the game, USC just has better
players right now, better athletes. Their wide receivers are as
(07:36):
good as anyone Forde will see all season long. They're
probably as good as as who that Indianapolis Colts will
see all season long. They were really really talented players.
All guys are gonna be playing on Sundays. So when
you add it all up, no one hate, no one
likes losing. But man again, you just felt like dude
did as so many positive things tonight. Took so many
(07:56):
steps forward yet but at least is trending the right direction.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
All right? Who plays well? This is what I normally
ask coaches and on a Friday night, But tell me
who steps up and impresses you tonight for the Boilers.
Speaker 7 (08:12):
You know, it's crazy because I've already talked twice about
the fact that he threw three interceptions, but Ryan Brown
actually played a really good game for Purdue. Had a
rushing touchdown on a fumble recovery, which was one of
the craziest plays you're ever going to see. It was
a double lateral that was actually fumbled, and Ryan Brown
had the presence of mind him pick it up and
(08:33):
running for a touchdown when everyone else would kind of
quit on the play. But he did have a passing
touchdown as well. And yes, he had three throws that
he would like to have back. Really two that the
fix six was not his fault. He was heavily rushed
and the ball was knocked out of his hand per
fixt six. But look, Hary Odom told us on the
postgame radio interview, this isn't all on Ryan Brown. I
(08:56):
mean the mistakes can also be easily traced to the
offensive line, which just did not give him enough time.
That I five quarterbacks acts, I think it ended up
being ten or eleven tackles for Ross. But your point here,
your question was who played well? I think despite even
the three interceptions, Ryan Brown really played a good game
for Purdue. Certainly had Purdue in a chance to at
(09:18):
least have a chance to win that game late, and
he's just getting better and better. For new fans need
to remember tonight was only his fifth start ever as
a college quarterback, so he continues to get better as
he gets more stats and more snaps. And he certainly
was the guy that played extremely well I thought tonight
and Michael Jackson the third also played well for Purdue.
(09:39):
I think seven seven catches for him for seventy yards.
So again, I know, you know if some bunts, but well,
you take the turnovers out of this game. He was
right there against a really quality top twenty five opponent.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Boilers lose tonight thirty three seventeen, taking on Notre Dame
next week. Rob blackmanppreciate it. I know you've had a busy,
busy night, and I appreciate you taking time to call me. Rob.
Be safe, all right, Bob, Thank you. Coming up, we're
gonna talk more football. That is the idea here, more football.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Paul Conder now talk later on this hour about high
school football. Brendan King will join me when we come
back after this school board update. On Network Indiana's Indiana's
Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Once again, my name Jays Hodge with your network Indiana
Sports update the Indianapolis Colts in action tomorrow against the
Denver Broncos. Both teams come into the matchup at one
and oh on the season. The linebacker as I here
Franklin says that there is a sense of urgency to
get to two and oh on the year.
Speaker 8 (10:44):
It's extremely I been in this league long enough to
understand that nobody really remembers what happened in Week one.
The same way for the past seven years. We came
here not trying to overreact to a lost man, not
going to overreact to a win. You know, Coach Shane
has been preaching since the spring about the daily process,
about you know, getting better and focused on being a
best version of ourselves every single day. I think it's
(11:07):
no more true than today in this week. Can't overreact
to anything. It's got to keep trusting the process, keep
getting better.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Four h five the kickoff for the Indianapolis Colts against
the Denver Broncos, and a quick update about layouts two
Lots too. He is now unlikely to play the defensive
end for the Colts. Lots too unlikely to play, according
to Ian Appleport, so it could be a big loss
on the defensive end. There for the Indianapolis Colts in
college football. A score update from South Bend. The Irish
(11:36):
are on the board again. Touchdown for Jeremiah Love puts
them on top forty to thirty four, but the pat
was no good. The snap was bad and the holder
could not get it down in time, so forty to
thirty four. The score remains up in South Bend with
two minutes and fifty three seconds left to go. We
heard from Purdue they lost thirty three seventeen. The final
(11:58):
score from Ross aids eighty and Balls State beats in
Amsterd thirty four to twenty nine. I you if he
eats Indiana State seventy three nothing in the game last night.
The Cardinals currently lead Milwaukee in Milwaukee.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Welcome back everyone on Bob Lovell. This is Indiana Sports
Talk Minor League Baseball today or tonight. Actually, the Indianapolis
Indians beat Iowa tonight five to two with me Hall
of Fame, legendary voice of the Indians, Howard Killman. Howard,
thanks so much for the call. A good way to
(12:32):
wrap it up tonight.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Well, you're right, Bob, it is. We're getting near the
very end. Tomorrow is the final home game of the season,
and the Indians got a couple of Barbie I hits
from Rafe l Flores, and they got good pitching from
a number of relievers, six pitchers at all. They've had
a lot of bullpen days today this season, and today
was another one of those. So but a nice one.
(12:56):
As you said, they've won three in the first five
in this series against in Iowa Cups team that's pretty
strong right now. So good win for the Indians.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
She pointed out big seventh inning seems to be the
key here. They get three They played three runs in
that seventh inning, Yes.
Speaker 5 (13:14):
Because it was a two to one game until then,
and those three runs broke the game open. We had
two rain delays. Delayed an hour at the outset due
to rain, and then delayed sixteen minutes in the seventh inning.
That was the second shortest rain delay I've ever experienced
(13:36):
in my years.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
With the Indians.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Nineteen eighty four, we were playing a day game in Denver.
It poured for about a minute, they stopped the game.
We resumed after a seventh minute rain delay.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
I'm not even sure you called a delay, just an
interruption would be more accurate.
Speaker 5 (13:58):
So here's the stand there are seven games to go.
Scranton Wilkesbury is in the driver's seat. They have a
four game lead over Syracuse and the Indians and Toledo
are six games back and Lehigh Valley six and a
half back. So the Indians have not been mathematically eliminated yet,
(14:21):
but obviously with the Rice games back to seven to play,
they're not about to do it. Nobody would do something
like that.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Well, they've won eighty one ball games and that they
should be very proud of that.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
Quite frankly, Well, you're right, it's been a good season,
although the last month we have not had the same
team because we lost so many guys to injuries and
we had a really strong lineup and good position players
the first four and a half months of the season,
but the last month has not been the same and
(14:55):
our record's been below five hundred the last month.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
Right tonight, the Indians beat Iowa five to two. Play
again tomorrow to wrap up the series. Howard Kellman, it's
always great to talk to you. I appreciate you taking
time to join me and have a fantastic weekend.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
Thanks Bob, and this series. The season ends with six
road games in Gwinnette so we'll call you next Friday
and Saturday.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
I'll look forward to it. Thanks a lot, We stay
and thank you Howard. We stay on Minor League baseball
with Brendan King from the South Bend Cubs. Hello, Brendan King.
Speaker 9 (15:35):
Coach, how we doing?
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Tell me how my cubs did tonight?
Speaker 10 (15:39):
Well, coach, I can't do that because the season has
been over. But the South Bend Cubs did wrap up
the season on Sunday, and we are an off season, Bode.
So the story from South Bend tonight is, of course
at Notre Dame Stadium.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
All right, are you ed? Yeah, that's right. They're leading
right now.
Speaker 10 (15:56):
Right, that's right, big touchdown score from your or my love, coach.
It's been a it's been a wild game to answer.
You know, I'm not in South Bend. I'm actually getting ready.
I'm gonna return to the show on Friday night, to
return to the update desk and looking forward to being
back with you left for a week from tonight.
Speaker 11 (16:14):
I was gonna say, I thought maybe they had changed
hosts and I didn't get the memo. But that's okay now,
But you are yeah, you mean most people feel that
it's I'm never leaving, so you are you're coming back.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
Scoreboard updates outstanding. I'm very very happy. Well tell me
about the Cubs. Give me your season perspective.
Speaker 10 (16:37):
Well, I think what what Howard said, Coach, there were
times this season where the South ben Comes had a
really dynamic lineup and then for one week, run reason
or another, whether that's injuries or promotions or trade deadline
and other things like that, the lineup can quickly fall apart.
And I think what we discussed late in the season
was just a comeback that this team had and what
(16:58):
they did to set themselves right, even being playoff contention, Coach,
this was a twenty three and forty three team in
the first half.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
Yeah, we turn that around.
Speaker 10 (17:07):
Comes when a game above five hundred in the second
half with Sunday's wins in the season finale. That marks
three consecutive years, coach, that the Cubs have won the
season finale and they went thirty three and thirty two
in the second half. Now, a game above five hundred,
that's not gonna print newspaper headline, but it is the
best half to half comeback in franchise history. Coach, You
(17:29):
go from twenty three and forty three to thirty three
and thirty two to wrap up that second half. And
really what it came down to, coach, in that second
half three consecutive series wins over Fort Wayne, Beloit and
Seda Rapids. And we discussed it that Beloit series went
at the time early in August. It propelled the Cubs
up to first place in the Revision. Unfortunately, being swept
(17:50):
on the road in Peori in the last road series
that was detrimental to the Cubs playoff post. But they
capped off the season with a good series and again
won the season finale. So I think you're gonna look
back at twenty twenty five, coach and say that it
was not a playoff year, but it was a year
that the Cubs really got back to playing good baseball.
(18:10):
It was the best base stealing year in South ben
Cubs history, stealing two hundred and forty four bases as
a team. And I'll end with this note on this.
Aril armis our catcher who we've discussed a lot in regal. Right,
he did officially finish the season with his fifty ninth
and sixtieth caught stealing and that is the most in
(18:31):
all of baseball. Armis finishes the season with sixty total
base runners caught stealing, No big league or minor league
catcher team even close.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
What mystifies me is why would you even attempt to
steal against the guy?
Speaker 10 (18:45):
We kept asking that question everything seriously, Yet other teams
just continue to run. Well, guess who did not have
a problem with that, mister runner.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Let mean, let me see if I got this right.
You lead all of baseball and throwing people out stealing bases,
and yet teams still wanted to Maybe those stats aren't accurate,
Well guess what they are? And why are you trying
to steal? I mean, it makes zero sense to me,
although I'm a baseball well I was a baseball coach,
but still so. Obviously he finishes with you guys, but
(19:20):
we all know what his future is, do we not?
Speaker 10 (19:24):
Without a doubt, coach, I would say he is the
second best catcher I've ever covered in total because the
number one catcher I've had a chance to cover in
South Bend as A guy by the name of Micgalamayo
is currently playing at Wrigley Field. He is a nineteen
year old back. In twenty eighteen, played with the South
Bend Cubs coach, and his bat was a little bit
more advanced when he was a South Bend Cub, and
(19:45):
that's why I would put him over the edge. But
I'm not sure if we've ever seen the defense's catcher
like Mari all armis coming through South Bend.
Speaker 9 (19:52):
Before and coach.
Speaker 10 (19:53):
He's twenty three years old out of the University of
San Diego. He's a future Gold Glover if and when
he gets the big League. It's just a matter of
figuring out the stick, which you know that that is
the big question for a lot of guys, right, maybe
the defense is there, how do you find it with
the bat? But I have the full confidence that he
will and when he does, that guy is going to
be playing at Wrigley Field every day.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Well, the big question is whether or not you had
a good time.
Speaker 10 (20:19):
Well, that's that's always one hundred percent a fat coach.
There's nothing better than being able to come to the
ballpark every day and you know, being able to call
this a job. Right, he's in the season. I'm so
grateful for what I've been able to do in South
Bend and I owe so many people so many thanks.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
And it was a good year.
Speaker 10 (20:37):
I had a lot of fun doing it, but looking
forward as well to being back with you on this show,
doing scoreboard updates through the offseason, through the winter, talking
some football, talking some basketball as we go. It's going
to be great to be back in the South.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
I couldn't agree with you more. Brendan King, the voice
of the South Bend Cubs. Back with us, Schoolboard Update,
Sports anchor next weekend. Brendan, it's great to talk to you.
We'll talk to you next weekend.
Speaker 10 (21:03):
Coach, back ass you see you soon.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
Thanks so much. Minor League baseball about to wrap up.
You need to get out and if you can see
some ball. It's been a fun year and we appreciate
Howard and Mike Moss from the Ten Caps and Brendan King.
We want to show some love to our franchises in
the state and we try to do that. All right, Jace,
(21:27):
what's the deal with Notre Dame? Are they winning or not?
Speaker 6 (21:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (21:33):
Coach, Currently they are up forty to thirty four, fifty
four seconds to go in the ballgame, but A and
M they have the ball in the red zone.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
All right, Jace, hanging there. He's coming up with another
scoreboard update. Stay with us We're gonna talk some high
school football with Paul Condrey on Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
For Network Indiana Sports. I'm Jay so Hodge in the
college football world. Coming down to the wire right now
at South Bend Stadium. A holding call in the gates,
But what have been a fourth day and long for
A and M. Instead they have it first and goal
just thirty seconds to go. They trail by six. Do
the aggies of a South Bend Stadium for the Indiana Fever.
They're in action tomorrow and game number one in Atlanta
(22:13):
against the Dream. Head coach Stephanie White and the Fever
will take on the Dream. They faced four times this year.
They put the season series to a piece, but have
not played since earlier in the season. Here's what he
coach Stephanie White had to say about the differences between
Atlanta then versus Atlanta now.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
I think the first thing is it's just the change
in the starting lineup. You know, the last time we played,
they were still starting both bigs. You know, it allows
them a little bit more versatility and how they're able
to play, you know, utilizing their post players in a
lot of different ways as they've gone through the season
and been able to adjust and how they get them
touches and then how they work their three point shooting
around it. So you know, for us, we got to
(22:51):
make sure our attention to detail is high. We've got
to make post entry passes very difficult, and we've got
to guard the three point one.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Game one tomorrow at three pm in Atlanta. Game two,
the Fever will return home to game Bridgefield House at
seven thirty pm Eastern, and if necessary, a game three
we'll be at a on a date that is STUBI
determined at a later time. The Culture and Action tomorrow
at four h five pm, a later start then we're
accustomed to. For a home game for the Anneapolis Skults
to take on the one to oh Denver Broncos from
(23:20):
Lucas Sooil Stadium, where quarterback Daniel Jones looks to get
the Colts to two and o for the first time
since two thousand and nine. And then in college football
right now A and M has the football down by six.
We'll keep you updated on all the happenings of Notre
Dame Stadium here on Indian SportsTalk.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
Welcome back, everyone, This is Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
As we do on Saturday nights. It's always one of
the highlights I think of the week with the show.
It's looking back at what happened in week number four
last night Friday night, great action around the state with
me to do that. He is the best friend football
(23:57):
has in the state of Indiana. He is the Indiana
Indiana Football Hall of Fame, the Indiana Sports Writers and
Sportscasters Hall of Fame, founder of the Regional Radio Sports Network,
and founder and publisher of the Indiana Football Digest, which
if you're a fan you absolutely have to have. And
friend of the show, Paul Condry. Paul, thanks so much
(24:18):
of the call. Great weather again last night, great football,
some streaks, some great performances, some tremendous football all around.
In week number four, it was.
Speaker 9 (24:29):
A crazy night coach. From an offensive standpoint, So if
you're a defensive coordinator, you probably were a little worried.
We had two teams scorer in the eighties, three teams
scoring the seventies, fourteen teams scoring the zifties, and twelve
teams score in the fifties. So mile mind defensives was
optional last night in the week number four. So but
(24:53):
that's the significant But you know, there was some unique
stories out there. I think here for a week four
us we're going to be to believe we're nearing that
midway point of the season at this time. But you know,
I know some of the stories that I think that
I know that you know you and I get inspired by,
and I think a couple of them. How about Nick
Stroud and that that Crawford County team coach. You got
(25:15):
to put this in the perspective that it is Crawford
County Bury. I would say this delicately. I mean socially, economically,
it's a very poor geographical area and they have not
had a lot of resources and have a lot of things.
They started a football program back in two thousand and
seven and they've with ever win last night against South
(25:36):
da Cato, they have won three straight football games for
the first time since they started their football program. I
think that's just an amazing I think that's an amazing feat.
I think that you look at other ones. I know
that South Bend Adams last night was able to knock
off New Paririe for the first time since nineteen eighty four.
(25:57):
Michigan City goes to valparais On the game that I
had at first ended beat them since two thousand and nine.
And you know another unique story Riverton Park brad Sanders group,
they're four and oh for the first time in the
thirty eight years of their football program. So those are
the kind of unique things that you're seeing at this
time of the year. And you're getting programs that you know,
(26:19):
I would say arguably ten years ago, we would not
be talking about them for us. It's a good example
of Springs Valley. Jason Lowe has done a tremendous job
at Springs Valley.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
I mean if a.
Speaker 9 (26:30):
Decade ago they were mined and a nasty's a losing
streak and they've been able to bounce back. I know
Twin Lakes has been okay over the years, they've had
ups and downs, but Kevin O'Shea has has changed that
program around their four and oh for the first time
since twenty twenty and only the second times is two
thousand and three. And so those are the kind of
(26:51):
underlying stories that we're seeing. You look at the last night,
I mean from you know who beat who said scenario. Yeah,
there were some ups, that's when it was all said
and down, But I mean those are the things are
going to happen. I know that there was a lot
of points scores. We saw Miles McLoughlin, the great running
back from Knox High School, become the number two all
(27:12):
time leading rusher in the state of Indiana. That's certainly
a unique thing to talk about in regards to high
school football on the fourth Friday of the season. But yeah,
I think the neat thing about the whole midway point
that was we're nearing is that we're still starting to
see teams win conference championships, the conference championships, and we
(27:35):
saw some great upsets last night. So it was a
pretty good night for Week four.
Speaker 1 (27:40):
Some great performances to some great upsets. Talk to me
about the upsets that come to your mind.
Speaker 9 (27:46):
Well from an upset. From an upset standpoint, I don't
know if there was a if there was a game
that say I know that, I know you talked to
coach Jessup last night. You know Mylon losing to Switzerland County.
I think that was certainly something that hadn't happened before.
That's pretty significant when it's all said and done. But
(28:08):
you know, the things that hop out into my mind
is the kind of offenses that we're seeing in Brownsburg
gives up forty seven points and has to perty five
to win, and those kind of situations. You look at
saner Grove and Ben Davis, another shootout between those two superpowers,
(28:28):
and of course you had that Cathedral winning at the
horn in their football game. I know that, I guess
the tarne time those two teams meet, that's always a
pretty pretty special situation. But man, I'll tell you what,
there was some great performances by kids last night that
just kind of rock your world. And I mean I
mentioned McLoughlin kid fifty carries three hundred and nineteen yards.
Speaker 1 (28:51):
Wow.
Speaker 9 (28:52):
Well, I mean you just look at those kind of things.
Landon Snyder for Mitchell Walker had fifteen rushes on hundred night.
You start a couple times, and they went at the
horn on a field goal. So those were some neat
things that happened. I'm really excited to see some of
these quarterbacks like Jack Sorgy try West. He's just throwing
the ball all over the yard right now, twenty two
(29:13):
to thirty four to three hundred and sixty two yards,
five scores. He ran four times for thirty four yards.
There are some great young players out there. Oscar Fry,
the great quarterback at Brownsburg, continues to amaze everybody. Fourteen
to twenty two hundred and sixty one yards, three touchdowns
for him. And I really like what coach Rob's done
at Avon. He has really got that group going in
(29:36):
the right direction. Despite the fact that they lost last night,
but their quarterback Jace Cameron was outstanding last night. Twenty
three to thirty three two hundred and forty yards. A
couple scores against you know, the team that won the
state championship a year ago. And I can go on
and on and on about some of those, but you know,
anytime you're in a position where you win games right
(29:56):
at the horn and I know Indianapolis could cathedral there
Van Chris Off drill three field goals, including the game
winner forty six yard with nine seconds to go in
the game. Oh wow, what a great night for high
school football.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
Any idea of why we had such an offensive explosion
last night, Well.
Speaker 9 (30:15):
I tell you what I think. If I had the
answer to that, would offensive fist importinators would tie me
up and tell their secrets. Defensive coordinators would be paying
me megabucks to be able to do that kind of stuff.
But I don't really have the answer to that. Under
the fact that you know, teams are heard, you know
(30:37):
they're trying to open things up. I think you if
you recall, I'm going to use a basketball reference in
this year because I think this is the best way
to do it. When Bob Knight had so much success
in the early seventies, we went to the motion offense.
Right of course, before we had the shot clock, everybody
was methodical and how they were going to do things.
Of course, then all of a sudden we get the
(30:57):
shot clock, three point line, the whole nine yards, and
then all of sudden people says, hey, let's move up
and down the floor. And I think as we've seen
the game go through its maturation, or in some people's minds,
they've taken a step backwards, depending upon what your viewpoint is,
I think that's really kind of what we're at. We're
seeing right now. We're seeing all the seven on sevens
(31:18):
during the summer, We're seeing all that kind of stuff
ers seeing come to fruition. The read pass option type
of offenses are are becoming more prevalent, I think in
the game. And you know, and the teams that run
the triple option, or that's running the wishbone, or they're
running the wing te those teams are few and far between.
(31:39):
Yet no matter what you try to do, no matter
what type of style you play, if you're dedicated to
doing it, you're going to be able to have some success.
It's just a matter of trying to do it. So
if I'm trying to come up with an answer, I
just think teams are used to getting the ball out
on the perimeter and just kind of stretching people out
and trying to make things happen. I know the game
that I did be between Valparaiso and Michigan City last night.
(32:04):
The game didn't get over till ten thirty because everybody
was throwing the ball over the yard like there was
no tomorrow. The running game was optional, just like sometimes
these games the defense is optional. So I don't know
if I have the answer, coach, but right that's my
relative theory.
Speaker 1 (32:19):
If you will, I would contribute to fact that our
student athletes are getting better and better. In addition to
all the all the things that you listed, I think
kids are better. I think the seven on seven, all
those things in the summer are a large a large
part of it too, but a lot of factors. All right, Paul,
(32:40):
I want you to hang on through this school board update.
We have obviously a lot to talk about in week
number five, some tremendous matchups we continue into conference play,
some really really solid matchups coming a week number five.
Stay with us, Paul Condry and I will come back
and talk more about high school football looking ahead to
(33:03):
week number five next week, make sure you stay with us.
We have a lot more to go in our conversation
with Paul, so stay with us to this school board
update on Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
Well for one final time tonight, I'm Jay Sodge with
this Network Indiana Sports Update, come to you with some
bad news for Irish fans, including myself. The final score
from Notre Dame Stadium, Texas A and M forty one.
Notre Dame forty A botched pat attempt costs the Irish
the game as they fall to zero to two on
the season and their playoff hopes dwindling down just three
(33:39):
weeks into the season. But a Major League Baseball the Cardinals,
who I said, we're closing in on a victory against
the best team in baseball, Milwaukee well, things have since changed.
They are now in extra innings in Milwaukee. The Cardinals
lead eight to seven as the Brewers come to the
bat in the bottom of the tenth. For those Reds
fans out there, they are currently tied five a piece
(33:59):
with the app Letex currently chasing down the New York Mets.
Are the Reds a win, they would get them a
half game behind the Mets for that sixth and final
spot in the MLB Wild Card. For the Innneapolis Indians
chasing down the International League East title, they were a
half game back of Toledo heading into today. They get
the win over the Iowa comes for the Indy eleven,
they fell today one nil to Rhode Island. Elsewhere in
(34:23):
college football, Perdue lost thirty three to seventeen at the
hands of usc Ball State beat New Hampshire thirty four
to twenty nine. In Indiana yesterday defeated Indiana State seventy
three to nothing, and then heading up tomorrow, the Indiana
Fever will begin things at three pm tip off in
game number one of the first round of the WNBA Playoffs.
The Fever the sixth seed, the Dream the three seed.
(34:44):
They tip off at three o'clock with game number two
being back here on Tuesday in Indianapolis, and in Indianapolis
tomorrow will be the Indianapolis Colts who have their Week
two game against the Denver Broncos. Both teams look to
move to two to zero Colts Broncos tomorrow at four
five pm.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
Welcome back everyone, This is Indiana Sports Stuff. We resume
our conversation with the man Hall of Famer himself, Paul Condrey.
All right, Paul, Week four in the books, significant things
which we talked about. Week five coming up. As always,
as we creep a little bit closer to postseason. You
have great matchups with a lot of teams around the
(35:25):
state and this Friday is no different.
Speaker 9 (35:27):
Coach, Before we jump on that, I've got a I
have a question for you. I know this is totally
off topic, totally offscript. Last night Indiana University in Indiana State,
we're playing on a Friday night. Both the Bloomington schools
are playing each other, the Turhouse schools. Now, I want
you to take me into the mindset of a athletic director.
(35:48):
Because the athletic directors I'm guessing are making these decisions.
I can't imagine a high school coach wanting to play
a football game on a Friday night when all the
of the potential kids that are trying to recruit are
playing on the same night. So before I talk about
the top game for this, no, tell me what goes
(36:09):
into the mindset and why the heck are they doing that?
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Well. From the standpoint of the IU and Purdue and others,
that's a decision made by the league office to satisfy
their demand for money. Their their greed. It's it's a
it's a move based on greed. They their television contracts
yield the significant amount of money to all the institutions.
(36:32):
You're talking about millions and millions of dollars, and so
uh that when they would play seven games, seven days
a week if they could get away with it, and
so you know, Friday night is something even coached upon.
Even though you and I both know there have been books, movies,
and television series written about Friday night lights and the
sanctity of high school football, this group puts money ahead
(36:55):
of that. From the standpoint of the of the Bloomington
schools and other like, you know, a year ago or
two years ago, we had the same thing up, but
West Lafayette and Lafayette, Jeff, they had the same thing
for you had a home game on a Friday night,
and so you know, if you're the ads there, I
guess one way you can can do it is move
your game to Thursday or play on Saturday. You know,
(37:16):
you have different options, but you know, moving it to
Thursday now you're infringing upon them. You've taken one day
of preparation away. You move it to Saturday again, you're
taking a day of preparation away. And so it's just
a it's a frankly, it's an unavoidable situation because the
Big Ten is gonna call the shots and they're gonna
(37:37):
do what they want to do, and they have, in
my in my opinion, they have absolutely zero regard for
student athletes in our state, none, none, whatsoever, going back
to when they bumped the girls state finals out of CONSECO,
continuing now to this day and bumping teams, not bumping them,
(37:57):
but playing a game, television games on Friday night, or
home games on a Friday night. And so it's a
long winded answer to a short question, but the bottom
line of it is quite frankly, the bottom line.
Speaker 9 (38:09):
All right, great answer, I was talking about it this
morning when we worked on the IFCA podcast with Coach
Huber and Dave Montgutt, and we talked about that. All right,
So let's take a look at some of the top
games in week Douber five. How about even though Columbus
North lost last night, they're going to be on the
road at Carmel. Carmel, of course, who lost in Kentucky
(38:29):
last night. I've said it a couple times with you,
Carmel could be a great football team.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
Win us.
Speaker 9 (38:36):
I'll said and done. Come postseason time, they're getting better.
Great game at Fisher Field, coming up at Warsaw Concord.
We'll be at Warsaw. That was a great game last year,
and of course those teams played in the five A
Sectional championship. Another great game. It's really kind of a
marquee game. I think for Fishers, they're three and one.
How good are they? Well, they're going to find out
(38:57):
because they're on the road at Brownsburg. I think that's
a really interesting game. And one game that probably hits
closer to my heart than any is that Paul Country's
alma mater, the Hoper Brickeys are going to be at
Father Record Field to take on Andre. If Hobert is
going to lose a regular season game based up on
the schedule, and what's just you know, just highlighting what
I think is going to happen. This is the only
(39:20):
game they're going to lose this year in regular season play.
Andre and always a tremendous football team, very very well coached.
I play with a tremendous amount of gritain and determination.
So that's a good game there. Homestead, which had a
big game in overtime last night, going to be on
the road at for Wallie Bishop Dwanger. A battle of
unbeatens between Indian Creek and Lapel should be good at
(39:42):
the Boneyard. Leo and East Noble two teams will be
battling up at East Noble Field Logan Sport who's off
to a good start. He's matched up against Twin Lakes.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
Paul, I'm sorry to cut you off. Great setup for
next week. Thanks so much. Have a fantastic weekend. Welcome back,
every Bob Lovell. This is Indiana Sports Stock. Let's talk
some college football to Paul beats Center, College of Kentucky
thirty five to fourteen with me. I'm very happy. Breton
Deets coach, thanks to the late call. I know it's
(40:12):
a long road trip, and I appreciate you squeezing me in.
Speaker 12 (40:15):
Hey we got long bus ride back.
Speaker 7 (40:17):
I got all this oide of the world.
Speaker 1 (40:19):
Yeah, you know what, And it's tolerable because you got
to w and they're not easy to come by. So congratulations,
thank you. Yes, Center's a tough team.
Speaker 12 (40:29):
They made the playoffs last year, so why we knew
when we scheduled this this would be a playoff type atmosphere.
Really good football team that we took care of business today,
So Frank got on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
I think it's a great game for you. You know,
it's I understand it's a long trip, but there there
are a lot of similarities between you and and them.
They're good, they do it the right way in this
early in the season. I think it's a great barometer game.
Figure out where you are, and I think you're clearly
you learned a lot about your team today. Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 12 (41:03):
Kurch Bryant has a great program there and been there
a long time, and so we know they're going to
be solid year and year out. They've had a couple
of great years. But so way so It was a great,
great challenge for us today and we got it done
through the air. Robbie Valentine, our senior receiver, so school
record for two and four reiving yards today on fifteen
(41:24):
catches and two touchdowns, so he kind of had the big,
big day for us. You know, he's from Andrean. On
the other side, Lighton had seven catches for almost ninety
yards and a touchdown as well. So they were taking
away the run, but we capitalize on the pass. If
they're going to load the box up, give us some
one on one matchups we got to take advantage of
(41:44):
we did tonight.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
So you have some experienced kids to understand how to
play this game. And the cool thing is you had
a great day by your offense. Your defense was pretty
dialed in themselves.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (41:57):
Defense held centered in negative four yards rushing, so nikes,
that's pretty good. We had We had four sacks, but man,
it felt like we had six, seven or eight of them.
So we were getting after the quarterback a lot. He's
he's a big scrambler. That was a big part of
the game plan and we held him almost sixty percent
passing as well. So defense got a big turnover there
(42:18):
in the second half to kind of throws at any
momentum that they had, so but our defense always plays
great and they continue to do that tonight.
Speaker 1 (42:26):
Anything you worked thrilled about, I mean this what needs
to be cleaned up for next week.
Speaker 12 (42:32):
Definitely special teams. You know, we left two field goals
out there that we missed, giving up too much off team,
and so we got to clean some stuff up on
special teams and and lick our willings a little bit
from an injury standpoint, and continue to have guys step up.
So there's there's definitely plenty to work on.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
On our ends. De Paul wraps up a great game today,
thirty five fourteen winners over Centered College. Brett Deetz on
the ligne with us in the bus. Coach, thanks so
much for taking time to join me. Good luck to
you and the Tigers next weekend. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 12 (43:13):
I appreciate we finally get to play at home, so
works at it.
Speaker 1 (43:16):
Outstanding coach, Thanks very much, good luck. Thanks thanks to
Coach Deet's there. Thanks to great job by Jace Hodge
and Caleb Zuver. Wonderful job, gentlemen. Thanks to our great
stations around the state that bring you the show every
Friday and Saturday night and thanks to all of you
