Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sportstock. One more hour
on a very busy Saturday. We're going to talk about
the Colts. We're gonna talk some pre football, and we're
also going to talk a little baseball. Right now that
we turn it back to the star of our show,
It's Network Indiana's Landon cons Coach.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Pleasure to be with you on this Saturday night in
our downtown in Indianapolis Studios with our producers Kyli Talley
and Caleb Zoover. NFL preseason Week number two, just down
the street from Moosall Stateium, the Green Bay Packers take
down the Indianapolis Colts twenty three to nineteen. Quarterbacks had
a pretty soliday Dale Jones going seven for eleven one

(00:40):
hundred and one yards, Anthony Richson going six for eleven
seventy three yards, and Riley Leonards seven for twelve sixty
four yards. And head coach Shane Steichen is going to
have a major decision on who he's going to have
to put at starting quarterback.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Absolutely, Obviously you got a quarterback battle. You got two
first round draft picks, and when they both came in,
you know, I made it very clear that you know,
this is going to be a battle, and they're going
to compete for the job. And like I said, I'm
going to make a decision I feels best for the
football team.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Will it be Anthony Richardson or Dale Jones. Here's Anthony Richardson.

Speaker 4 (01:12):
I really don't know. It really doesn't matter what I think.
At the end of the day, it's really up to them.
I feel like I've been trying to put my best
foot forward, trying to grow each and every step of
the way. I feel like I've been doing a decent job,
you know, and and improving. But at the end of
the day, I just want to keep improving. And if
I do want a job, you know, thank god. If not,

(01:32):
I need to keep working.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
And here's Dale Jones on what he has shown to
get potentially at the starting job.

Speaker 5 (01:38):
Just trying to show up every day and improve, grow
in my understanding of the offense, and make good decisions consistently.
I think that's been something I've I've always tried to
do and and we'll continue to work on. But I
think consistent decision making and you know, throwing the ball accurately,

(01:58):
I think that's a huge part of playing the positions.
You know, that's something I've tried to do once again.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
That final score Packers twenty three, Colts nineteen lone. Colet's
touchdown of the day was Tyler Goodson. It was a
three yard run. Goodson end of the day with two carries
ten yards. We had one injury. Blake Friel in the
backup offensive lineman suffered a leg fracter. Week three, final
preseason game of the year for the Colts will be
next Saturday at Cincinnati, taken on Joe Burrow and the Bengals.

(02:26):
That kickoff will be at one o'clock WNBA. After the
fever loss last night to the Washington Mystics eighty eight
to eighty four, if he will be back in action

going back to the playoffs, no overtime, no controversy this time.
This is second win at Richmond after going back to
back after winning last year, and this is his sixth

(03:09):

one hundred and seven. Top top five Austin Dillon, Alex Bowman,
Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Austin Center, top five running out
the top ten Kyle Larson, Daniel Suarez, Josh Berry, Brad Keselowski,
and Denny Hamlin. Bubba Wallais led the most laps of
the night with one hundred and twenty three, but he

(03:30):
dealt with hire problems on Pitt Road, ended up finishing
twenty eighth, and poll Center Ryan Priest had a good
day gone bad, finishing thirty fifth leading sixty laps two
available spots left. Tyler Redick and Alex Bowman are in
as of now, the only two drivers without a win

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Welcome back everyone, glad you could join us on Indiana
Sports Talk. We are in the midst, soon to be
in the midst of high school football next Friday, this
coming Friday. Excuse me, we get it going for real,
and no, young man, you may know you won't hear

(05:02):
him on our show. Heavily involved in this that we
be hosting a preview show on Tuesday on Indiana SRN
for high school football one A and two A football.
Nathaniel Finch joins me. Nathaniel, thank you so much for
the call. So tell me about you and your colleagues
at Indiana SRN. You fired up. You got a big,

(05:23):
big gig on Tuesday talking about one A and two
A football.

Speaker 6 (05:27):
Yeah, big time. One of our big sponsors Aspen Creek Grill.
I know you've been there. They're hosting in so you
know we're just going to talk about well, we're talking
about all six classes, of course, but I've been assigned
one and two A. I'm gonna call a lot of
their games this year and that couldn't be more excited.
We've got two really fun classes here this year.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
So does that mean I'm going to have you on
the show every Friday night talking about high school football?

Speaker 7 (05:50):
Hey?

Speaker 6 (05:50):
Sounds good to me.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Coach, Well, I would think for your well being in
terms of your future. I've been told that I have
a certain level of I don't know how to put it.
Maybe people I have a tiny bit of influence, So
I would encourage you to call me every Friday night,

(06:12):
but I don't want to put any pressure on you.
All right, So you're in the expert on one A
and two A. Tell me what you know?

Speaker 6 (06:18):
Well, how about we start in two A. I mean
Adam Central, the reigning two ahh right, they beat They
beat Lynton Stockton real good in the state finals last year,
and man, they just returned so strong this year. Junior
quarterback Jamison Roach he threw twenty six total touchdowns last year,
only two interceptions. He still has another year after this,

(06:39):
so he led the team to the state title game
last year. Adam Central is going to be so good.
They do lose a couple of state players, but they
returned some as well. This is a team under Michael Moser.
I mean it's a seventeenth year. He knows what he's doing.
They run the heck out of the football and they've
got a good quarterback to back it up. So there's
no reason why anyone you know, should have any objection
to Adam Central being the one team in two A.

(07:01):
Brownstown Central is going to be pretty good. Two coach here.
They lost in heartbreak fashion end of the fourth quarter
in the regals. Last year, they returned so many great players,
including again common theme here their senior quarterback Micah Seffery
at eighteen total touchdowns last year. You lose a really
good running back from a year ago, but when you
have your quarterback intact, it can really be huge for

(07:24):
these offense. Central Brownstown Central is going to be two
very key players here in two A and then a
couple more names to look out for. I mean, Lynton
Stockton was the two A runner up last year. Sure
they lost their star quarterback and running back and tight end,
but you have an all state receiver Paul Oliver coming back.
They could be good this year. LCC is always good.
They've won six straight sectional championships. There's no reason to

(07:46):
think Brian Nay's team can't do that again. You do
lose your star quarterback, Though't get this. Bobby Metzger last
year coach three thousand passing yards, thirty six touchdowns. Yeah,
he is out the door. That certainly going to be
tough to replace. But Elsie is always good.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Elsie you sees good. Lutheran is good, and DRAN is good.
How am I doing so far?

Speaker 6 (08:09):
I mean, let me tell you a team I'm really
excited for coach and I got eyes on these guys
a couple times last year. Heritage Christian. Yeah, they are
ranked toward the bottom of these top tens, but man,
they're gonna be good. A new head coach in Caleb Brinks,
so that's probably a new factor. But listen their star
running back Elijah Penmanshal. I saw him, unfortunately see his

(08:29):
season come to an end pretty early last year with
the knee injury, but the year before that, and then
even in the game he did play last year, he
was just such a good runner. So it's gonna be
huge getting him back. Their quarterback Eli Knicks returns. He
is good. Heritage Christian is a team that everyone's going
to be sleeping on. But again, when we rip off
those top five or six teams in two as, there's
a reason why a good team like Heritage Christian is
so far down the pole. This is just such a

(08:51):
loaded class.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
It is loaded, And I would throw in one more.
I'm a huge fan of Tim Abel, the head coach
at Triton Central. He's won a state championship before and
so any team he coaches, I think has to always
be in the mix. All Right, that's two A. That
was well done, Nathaniel Finch. So if people want to
watch this or listen to this preview on Tuesday, give

(09:13):
me the details that people need to be aware of.

Speaker 6 (09:16):
It's on Indiana SRN. You can find us on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook,
all though is our website, but Indiana SRN. It's our
preview show on Tuesday night, six thirty seven o'clock.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
It'll be fun, outstanding, all right, one A. We'll talk
about one A. Tell me who you like in one A.
And he talked about two A as a wide open class.
I'd say the same thing about one A.

Speaker 6 (09:39):
For two different reasons. Two A is stacked because everybody's
coming back and they have all these strong teams. One
A everybody's graduated. I mean, you look at this, your
top few teams. Providence just won the state championship last year.
They lost three all staters, including their quarterback, running back,
running back, tight end, wide receiver. I mean it just
sets this offense is gutted. But they obviously dominated last

(10:01):
year undefeated season North Judson, who they beat, similar deal,
great coach and Brett Lambert, great system here, but they
lost their top quarterback, their top running back, their second
running back. I mean, there's so much vacated offense on
these top few teams. Now you're gonna rank them one
and two because of what they did last year in
their track record and they're coaching. But man, this is

(10:21):
going to be interesting to see how this conference, how
this class shakes out.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Can you hang on talk a little bit more?

Speaker 7 (10:27):
Yeah, of course, coach.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
Right, we'll come back Nathaniel Finch and I'll continue to
talk about high school football. Score it up to coming up.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
With Andandy Coons here for another Indiana Sports Talk update.
Green Bay Packers get the win over the Indianapolis Colts
twenty three to nineteen down the road Lucsold Stadium. In
NFL preseason Week number two, Dale Jones, what was the
starting quarterback for the day. He went seven for eleven
on the day, one hundred and one yards. Anthony Richardson,

(10:55):
on the other hand, went six for eleven and seventy
three yards. And looking at the list here, Shane Steichen,
this is what he This is his thoughts on today's
quarterback competition.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yeah, I mean, I'll go back and look at it,
but I think the operation just getting the completions, moving
the ball up and down the field, taking what the
defense gives you. I think both of them, you know,
did some nice things. I think Daniel finishino seven of
eleven and ar was six of eleven, and you know,
we didn't turn the ball over there at that position,
which was good.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Week three the final preseason game of the year for
the Indianapolis Colts. A week from today, another one o'clock
kickoff against Cincinnati Bengals, and it'll be at Cincinnati. Take
on Joe Burrow. Indiana Fever back in action tomorrow to
take on the Connecticut Sun. Tip Off will be at
one o'clock. You can listen to it on our Flax
SIP station on ninety three to five and one oh

(11:46):
seven to five the fan. In the MLB s Chkyle
Cubs three to one over the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers
six to five, or the Cincinnati Reds in eleven innings,
Alanda Braves ten to one over the Cleveland Guardians, Kansas
City Royals six to two over the Chicago White Sox,
Detroit Tigers got the eight to five win over the
Minnesota Twins, and the New York Yankees twelve to eight
over the Saint Louis Cardinals and Noapois Indians lose to this.

(12:08):
Granton Wilksbury rail Riders eleven to five, four Way tim
Caps shut out the West Michigan White Caps three nothing,
and a live look inside for the South Bend Cubs.
The Cubs lead five to three of the White skycarp
five to three bottom of the Knights.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports Talk. Will resume
our conversation with Nathaniel Finch. You know him from Indiana
Sports Talk. You also know him from Indiana SRN. He's
going to be on the sidelines doing some games for them,
hosting a show on Tuesday on Indiana SRN, a preview

(12:41):
of upcoming seasons in high school football, focusing on one
A and two A. All right, mister expert high school football,
A good thing for you, mister Finch, Nathaniel Finch, the man.
We talked a little bit about one A and two A.
Let's go back to one A. You would providence of

(13:04):
the defending champs. Listen, this is a wide open class.
I mean it really is. There are some really really
good teams, as you pointed out, you know, you got
a lot of new faces, a lot of opportunities for
some schools to who have been good, but for them
to break through in this season.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
When I was telling you, you mentioned how North Juhnson
Providence the top two teams from last year, they're losing
so much on these offenses, just absolutely gutted. Now the
good news, you've got these run systems with Daniel McDonald
at Providence Brent Lambert at North Juhnsin they're going to
find guys who can fill those spots. But man, you
just start so far behind the eight ball when you
have a completely new roster like that, you look down

(13:46):
the rest of this comfort of this class. And that's
kind of how it looks for South Puttenham too. They
come in here losing their all state quarterback who through
for nearly three thousand total yards thirty five total touchdowns.
You lose three starting offensive linemen. I mean, it's gonna
be tough for South Putnam. They're always good. They're gonna
be a good squad. You know that they gave Providence
a run for their money in the semi state last year,

(14:08):
but they're losing a lot. North to Catur's gonna be
another good team, but they lose eleven starters, including their
all state quarterbacks. So certainly a lot of turnover here
at the top of the class for North to Cato
two without this, they're running back Corbyn Thackeray All State
last year. He had nineteen rushing touchdowns, three receiving touchdowns,
and then six return touchdowns. So he comes back. He

(14:29):
is going to be an absolute star for the Chargers
this year. But then the further down in this class,
you get there's plenty of teams like how often is
it that you can look at the number six, number seven,
number eight ranked teams and you say, well, these guys
could certainly compete for a championship. I mean South Adams,
I think is going to be very good this year.
A hyper productive air raid offense from Grant Moser, the

(14:52):
head coach. He's there in his eleventh year. They're always
good and they return their all state quarterback in Titus Layman.
So last year three thousand total yards, thirty four total touchdowns.
He is back and running this air raid offense. Now, coach,
you know you and I both know a lot of
these smaller schools, you typically have success running the football
more than any kind of aired out. But when you

(15:12):
have a rare talent like Layman is, you can certainly
get some wins through the air. So I'd be excited
to see what South Adams can do this year. And
again I mean Carol of Floor is going to be good.
Knightstown has a chance to be really good after kind
of a disappointing end of the season last year. There's
a lot of teams here that you think could certainly
give these teams at the top of the rights to

(15:33):
run for the money.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
I would add Springs Valley, I would add Mylin to
the mix here. A couple of teams I think have
a chance. But Paul Condrey and I talked on the
show last night and he mentioned that each Clay this
little unique year. You know, in the last few years,
we've been able to clearly point out favorites in some

(15:58):
of the classes, and I think that with this coming season,
I'm not sure you can do that. I'm not sure
there's a clear cut favorite in any of the classes,
especially in one A or two A.

Speaker 6 (16:09):
Well, and for one A it certainly helps for that
factor that Lutheran, who had won three straight and what
was it twenty six straight postseason get right. They've moved
up to Class two A that did that last year,
they had some success, so certainly that leads the door open,
and Providence was able to fill that void last year.
But I don't think we're going to see this type
of dynasty that we've seen, you know, the last handful
of years. It was Pioneer before then obviously Luther in

(16:31):
these last two years. I don't think we're going to
see that here, at least for the near future. A
lot of turnover in this class, and that just makes
these games so much fun. Coach, It makes it so
much fun.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
All right, six thirty Tuesday night? Is that it?

Speaker 6 (16:44):
That's right? Pretty excited for it?

Speaker 1 (16:45):
Indiana SRN. That's on YouTube? How soon before you get
your own personal Nathaniel Finch YouTube channel.

Speaker 6 (16:55):
We'll see how that goes, you know, you get me
out branching off feel my own stuff. How am I
supposed to hang out with you on Saturday nights on?

Speaker 1 (17:01):
That is a good That's a great question. Uh. I
do want to seem somewhat territorial here and say that
you need to wait till I decide to retire, and
then then I wish you the best. I absolutely do. Uh,
you're doing a great job. All right, talk to me

(17:22):
about the Colts, and I know you you were You've
been busy. You've been a busy guy all day. You
were involved in producing that for our UH, for the
network and for our flagship stations in Indianapolis. UH preseason games.
I talked to Greg. Greg saw earlier it's hard to
understand and get and get a feel engage how they

(17:43):
do in preseason games because of a number one, you
know your ones, ones are not necessarily going against ones,
and that you had some injuries that were really not good.
And but you know, the quarterback competition continues to be
one that keeps guys like you and me employed and
things to talk about.

Speaker 6 (18:06):
Well, certainly that's the case. And to your point, I mean,
joint practice is usually where we see a lot of
this competition. That is where the first team offense goes
against the other team's first team defense. That's where these
coaches like to get a lot of their work. Well,
that wasn't the case this year for you know, Green Bay,
because they have so many guys hampered in that first
team offense, including Jordan Love, who you know was nowhere

(18:27):
near seeing the field this week. So that happened this
week in joint practice, you couldn't really tell what you're
seeing because it's the Colts first and second teamers against
maybe the second and third stringers of Green Bay, and
it's the same deal. Today. You saw what Daniel Jones
did and he looked good at times. He also had
a few kind of arrant throws that you really wish
he wouldn't have made, but he was going against the
second team defense of Green Bay. Then you see Richardson

(18:50):
commit he plays pretty well. He's got a few nice
throws on the money, but that's against maybe the third
team defense and so forth. So it really is hard
to judge. But if you just look at how the
operation went, there were way too many penalties for sure.
Shaan Styche will be the first one to tell you
that you got to get those cleaned up. But you
kind of liked what you saw from both quarterbacks, and
Psychin was pretty honest about you know how close he

(19:12):
is to making this decision. Personally, I think it's going
to be Richardson. I think he showed enough today. Maybe
the box score is not going to show it, but
a couple of throws that got called back, I think
he showed enough today. Where that coupled with the fact
that Jones isn't really separating himself, I think they're going
to give it to Richardson, try to name it this week,
maybe early this week, and let him get as many
first team reps before next Saturday, and then you know,

(19:34):
Sunday a couple of weeks later.

Speaker 1 (19:36):
How about you stepping out on a limb and making
a call there. I don't disagree with anything you said, though,
but I think it's incumbent upon the guys to make
a decision. They're smarter about it than you and I
are and know what they're looking for. But I think
you make a great point.

Speaker 6 (19:55):
Well, and it's usually if it's close, the tie usually
goes to the incumbent, right, and not only how about
the number four overall pick from a couple of years
ago that everybody's job is riding on. So if Jones
were to win this battle, he really needed to just
take it and run with it. He hasn't really done that.
They've both been pretty neck and neck, which it's been
a good competition to'll get you wrong, But we're getting

(20:15):
toward that part in the preseason where you want to
have kind of this whole thing established. Now that you've
left Grand Park, you're practicing on West fifty sixth Street.
You want to have your starter established. And I'm pretty
sure it's good. I mean, I don't know any better,
but I would guess it's going to be Richardson.

Speaker 1 (20:31):
That'saniel Finch making his prediction. Injuries are a problem for
them right now, are they not?

Speaker 6 (20:38):
It's getting pretty It's a long list. And now Steichen
has said today he's not too worried about it. I mean,
if you kind of have to say that, he thinks
that we can get all this kind of solved in
the next twenty one days. But boy, that is just
they just continue to mount. I mean, break Blake Freeland
was gonna be a good depth piece on this offensive line.
He broke his leg. Man, that was tough to see.
And I mean, you've just seen so many piling ups

(21:00):
that you hope it all kind of works out, but
certainly not a good start to the year. And you
wonder how how much of this piles into the first
few weeks.

Speaker 1 (21:08):
Well that's a good question. Nathaniel Finch. Good luck on Tuesday, brother,
I hope it go work out. The coach always a
plast hey, sounds to me like you're ready to go.
Do you have a game in week one of high
school football?

Speaker 6 (21:22):
Oh? I do, and I'm excited for this one, another
small class game. Pretty excited next Friday too. I'm at
Covenant Christian. They played Park Tutors, so it should be fun.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
Oh. I think that's a That's a great way to
open up the season for both teams and for you.
And I know I will at least have one caller
on the show next week.

Speaker 6 (21:43):
Can guarantee you that, Coach, I have.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
One guaranteed guest on the show for next week. When
you met, you need to be ready to talk for
two and a half hours about that game. Okay, Hey,
Ti'm good. All right, I'll talk to you this week, Nathaniel,
Thanks for the call, Thanks coach, Thank you. Coming up
school board update with Landon Coons, and then we're gonna

(22:06):
talk some pretty football.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
Final scores today from the MLB Chicgo Cubbs get a
three to one win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Milwaukee Brewers
in eleven innings take down to the Cincinnati Red six
to five. The Alanta Braves stomped the Cleveland Guardians ten
to one. Kansas City Royals six to two over the
Chicago White Sox. The Detroit Tigers gonna win over the
Minnesota Twins eight to five. In the New York Yankees

(22:32):
get a big win over the Saint Louis Cardinals twelve
to eight. Finals. Inside the MLB Scranton Wilkesbury rail Riders
take down the Indianapolis Indians eleven to five. South Bend
Cubs get the win. We know our own Brendan King
will be happy about that. Over the wood Skycarp five
to three and the Fort Wayne Timcaps shout out the
West Michigan white Caps three nothing. CHECKI flag has fallen

(22:54):
at Richmond Raceway the Cookout four hundred and the NASCAR
Cup Series. Austin Dolan wins in a sellout crowd, no overtime,
no controversy this time. This is his first win of
the twenty twenty five season. This is his second win
at Richmond after going back to back in winning last year,
and his sixth career win. Also another interesting stat Dylan
led one hundred and seven laps, the first time since

(23:15):
the number three car has led one hundred plus laps
in a Cup race since the nineteen ninety eight Daytona
five hundred with the late Daleenheart Senior, which was also
one hundred and seven laps. Top ten finishers Austin Dillan
gets to win, Alex Bowman's second, Ryan Blaney completes the
podium in third, Joey Logano fourth, Austin Cindric fifth, Sixth
is Kyle Larson, Daniel Suarez seventh, eighth, Josh Berry, Brad

(23:37):
Keselowski ninth, and tenth Denny Hamlin. Bubba Wallis led the
most laps with one hundred and twenty three, dealt with
the tire problem on pit road, finished twenty eighth. Poll
Center Ryan Prees finished thirty fifth after leading sixty laps,
and William Byron is the regular season champion going into
Daytona next week. For never Kenyanta Sports, some man of coons.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
Welcome back everyone on fil level. This is Indiana's sports Talk.
We're creeping up on college football. We're creeping up on
everything football related. Pretty boiler Makers. A lot going on,
new coach, new players, new systems. We got a lot
of new things. But one standard is if you're a
pretty football fan, I can't imagine you're not a subscriber

(24:17):
to Goldenblack dot Com. I can't, I cannot, I cannot
imagine at at this stage of life with me, publisher, owner,
creative soul of all time, Alan Karpet, Hello, Allen, Hey Bob.

Speaker 7 (24:33):
And thank you for the night kind words. But yes,
it is hard to believe we're we're still in the
hot days of August, and yet two weeks away from
two weeks in a day I guess away from Produe's
opening kickoff against the Cardinals of ball State in ross
Age Stadium on the thirtieth of August. We're looking forward

(24:53):
to it.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
We all want answers in life, Allen. Sports fans, we
want to you know, fans want to know how their
team's going to be. They want to know what's going on.
The thing about pretty football right now is.

Speaker 7 (25:10):
What we know is what we don't know, Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (25:15):
I mean.

Speaker 7 (25:16):
The two numbers you need to think about are forty
six and eighty two. And that's and those aren't two
retired jerseys and produced football history. Is how many new
bodies forty six guys, if you can think about this
and you're you're a coach and can relate to this,
forty six got forty six.

Speaker 1 (25:33):
New guys since since June.

Speaker 7 (25:36):
So these are guys that are having their first experience
as a Boiler American eighty two all told if you
go all the way back to springball and and the roster,
so you know, coach Barry Odam's got his hands full
as staff does. They seem to be taking it in stride,
and it is the new world of college football. Some
like it, some don't. And yet you're right. The operative

(25:59):
word is, we don't know just how Purdue's going to be.
Our guys Tom dean Hart and Dove Jealous and have
been in every day at practice. That's been a great thing.
But the things that we don't get to see, Bob,
and you can understand this from a coaching perspective, is
that we don't get to see the scrimmages, and of
course the one on last Saturday and then this one
upcoming to really know exactly what they're looking like when

(26:21):
the lights are halfway turned on. But pretty will be
under the lights of ross Ate Stadium Saturday night for
their scrimmage at seven or at least it will be
sundown time in West Lofayette, and the bootlemakers will be
trying to determine who that quarterback is going to be.
I think some key position players that just about throughout

(26:42):
the roster. When you have that many new guys, that's
by definition, that's the way it's going to be.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
Yeah, I would tell you from a coaching standpoint, you're
going to have a group of guys who are all
laser focused on doing well. Everybody's the same, everybody's brand new,
so everybody's starting from the same place. And the competition
for a time, competition for spots is always good for you.
It's tremendous for you in terms of growth. And as

(27:09):
a coach, you can honestly look at your staff and
look at yourself and say, these guys are going to
get better every day, every single day. They're going to
get better. If you're looking for something to give you
something to wake up every morning and get excited about,
those are a couple of things that'll help you well.

Speaker 7 (27:27):
I think so. And I think the thing is you
can't say if you're on Produe's roster, you can't say
you didn't get a chance. Yeah, because they have looked
through they really are still running through four quarterbacks. I
think there are probably two that are that are the
leaders in the Clubhouse and Ryan Brown and Malachi Singleton, but.

Speaker 6 (27:44):
It really is that.

Speaker 7 (27:46):
And I think you've you know, they've run through two
or three sets of offensive lineman just to try to
find the right to the right blend. We all know
the college that football in general, and college football as well,
you got to be good on the offense to line.
Purdue was not last year. It's going to have a
whole new group there and we'll see if they can

(28:07):
stand up and hang in there. Not only those first
two games against teams of the Boilermakers should beat, but
against the schedule that's going to be going.

Speaker 1 (28:17):
To be formidable.

Speaker 7 (28:18):
When you get into Big Ten play and play Notre Dame.
Outside of that, it's going to be all produe can handle.

Speaker 1 (28:24):
I think you take solace in the fact that coach
Otam had great success at UNLV and came in and
resurrected or program, so this is not something he's unfamiliar with.
But again, you have some daunting things ahead of you
personnel wise, and as you mentioned, schedule wise, and it's
that old adage control the controllables, and that's I'm sure

(28:46):
what they're focusing on right now. But you know, you
think about a situation where they were not very good
at all last year on either side of the ball.
And so I think people need to be really excited,
number one, about what they're going to be about. And
number two, I have a sense just to have a sense.
They're going to play uh, they're gonna play hard, They're

(29:08):
gonna play some fun ball, and I think people should
be excited. Quite frankly, Yeah, I.

Speaker 7 (29:14):
Think the thing too. And when you have eighty two
new players, you can say the slate to his wipe clean.
They're not and he can Bury Odam can coach Bury
Odam can legitimately say you know, yeah, that happened last year,
but we're not really part of that because right now
we've got a whole new we got a whole new
slate of guys. And I think the general feeling in
West Lofiette is that this is a guy that the

(29:36):
trains are going to run on time, they will play hard.
Bury Otam. I like coaches, you know, very still a
relatively young guy compared to you and I he's he's
well enough, right and and he you know, I like
coaches that have known difficulty. I mean he you know,
he coached the Missouri. Uh he had you know, they

(29:57):
were five hundred and he did get dismissed after four years.
But he coached Drew Locke and some other guys and
they beat Purdue in a game up in West Lafiett
in twenty eighteen. Perdue beat them in twenty seventeen and
in Colombia. But my point is this is a guy
that has been you know, has has had some difficulty,
had to deal with it, and then has risen up.

(30:17):
You know, he had to go back and kind of
do an apprenticeship as an assistant in Arkansas before getting
the UNLV job, and he's he's he's paid his dues again.
And I think that that's a good thing. And I
also think that this is a guy that he's a
no nonsense guy. He's got a lot of a lot
of Joe Tiller, a lot of old ball coaching him.

(30:37):
I think he would relate favorably to him. He just
he just is exactly what you said, and that is
he's going to control the controllables. He's not going to worry.
You can't worry about things you can't control right now.
And I think that's where he is. And I think
you'll see the team from all accounts, that's they're not
wasting any time because they have no time to waste.

(30:59):
But they are going to be a team that's going
to play to the final whistle. And I think at
times last year that's what was troubling with Purdue is
not only were they getting beaten soundly, but it just
wasn't even They weren't even competitive in the second half
of football games. I think they will be this year.
Whether they're going to win that many more, I don't know,

(31:20):
but I do think that they're going to play hard.
And I think that's that's a pretty fans want to
see anyway, for it's from a football program.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
Alan Karpik were this, we're talking about the Purdue boiler Makers,
and you mentioned it. They open up on the thirtieth
against ball State. A lot of time they're you know,
if you're coach Odam and the guys, there's not a
lot of time. But you and I both know there
is a lot of time, and so much can happen
injury wise. Are they okay right now as.

Speaker 7 (31:47):
Far as we know? And uh and and it seemed
to be pretty good. We've got a couple of guys
that are dinged up what you always have in fooball camp,
but nothing nothing of the of of the guys that
they anticipate being a major impact players that are going
to be out at least from what we understand. And

(32:07):
again we are seeing him in practice and seeing who's
showing up. But all things are all things are pretty good.
They have not had a you know, it seems like
every team has a has a has a blown out
knee or something that they lose a guy for a
season from camp. I hope that doesn't happen. And at
this point in time, all things are good from that standpoint.

Speaker 1 (32:26):
With Purdue Goldenblack dot com. You want to get smarter,
I want to know more about your Purdue Moilarmakers. You
need to go there. It's the best at what it does.
Alan Karpek, great to talk to you. Excited now You've
gotten me energized that I'm talking to someone like you,
and I'm fired up, ready to go and play some football.

(32:47):
Thanks so much of your time, Alan, have a great weekend, all.

Speaker 7 (32:51):
Right, Thanks so much. Always a privilege to be on
your show, and we will do it anytime you call,
We'll we'll come run. And I appreciate and produce sports
with you.

Speaker 1 (32:59):
Thanks so much, Allen, Thank you a lot of excitement.
Speaking of excitement, we're excited. Brendany King and I are
going to talk about the South ben Cubs being in
first place when we come back after this school board
update with Landon Coons.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Landing Coons here for the final scoreboard update of the night.
NFL preseason Week two, Green Bay Packers take down the
Indian Albis Colts right down the road from Lukeshall Stadium.
Final score twenty three to nineteen, Dale Jones going seven
to eleven on the day one hundred and one yards,
Anthony Richardson went six for eleven seventy three yards, and
head coach Shane Steiken has a tough decision on who's

(33:37):
gonna name as starting quarterback.

Speaker 1 (33:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (33:39):
Absolutely, Obviously you got a quarterback battle.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
You got two first round draft picks, and when they
both came in, you know, I made it very clear
that you know this is going to be a battle
and they're going to compete for the job, and like
I said, I'm going to make the decision I feels
best for the football team.

Speaker 2 (33:53):
Week three, the final preseason game of the season next
Saturday at one o'clock. That'll be against the Cincinnati Bengals
at Cincinnati. In the WNBA. The Indiana Fever after losing
to the Washington Missics last night eighty eight to eighty four,
he'll be back in action tomorrow at one o'clock to
take on Kelsey Plumb and the Connecticut Sun again. Tip

(34:13):
Office tomorrow at one o'clock. You can listen to it
on our flag ship station on ninety three five and
one oh seven to five. The fan final scores in
the MLB s Kyle Cubs three to one over the
Pittsburgh Pirates, Brewers six to three over the Reds Braves,
ten to one over the Guardians. Royals get the sixty
five win over the White Sox, Tigers, eight to five
over the Twins, and the New York Yankees twelve to

(34:33):
eight over the Saint Louis Cardinals. In the MiLB, the
Indianapolis Indians lost to the Scranton Wolfsbury rail Riders eleven
to five. Four Wayne ten Caps showed out the West
Michigan White Caps three to nothing, and the South Bend
Cubs get the final score five to three over the
Beloit skycarp We will hear from Brendan King here and

(34:54):
just momentarily for Network Indiana Sports, a'm Manicoons.

Speaker 1 (34:58):
Welcome back, every Bob Lovell. This is Network Indiana's Indiana
Sports Tunk. The South Ben Cubs beat Bulloit. As you
heard Land and Coons say, that win puts the Cubs
in first place with me to talk about it, the
voice of the South Ben Cubs, a very happy Brendan King. Hello, Brendan, Hello, coach.

(35:24):
No popping of champagne corks. But but there's still a
lot of ball to be played. But this is a
great milestone for this group. They've climbed back and this
has been an impressive second half of the year.

Speaker 8 (35:38):
Feach, it really has been. And no, you're not going
to see any campaign bottles being popped and Fay I
was just in the clubhouse that congrat congratulate the guys
on the win, and you know, there was barely any
music going. You know, this is a team that's pretty
laser focused on going to tomorrow because coach, if you
remember back in the game on Friday night, the Cubs
were in the same spot, leading the division by a
game over Belloyd and spot was a pretty underwhelming game,

(36:01):
losing to the Skycarp seven to two. So the Cubs
note that you got to go out and win tomorrow
now here against Belloyd, because if you lose tomorrow's game
in the finale, it puts you back in a tie
for the division with the Skycarp. But you know, Coach,
tonight is one of those games, as we talked about
on the phone last night, where you kind of lean
back after the broadcast and you're just thinking about how

(36:22):
lucky you are to do this job, whether you're a player,
broadcast or approach. When you're in these situations, this is
why you play the game. Coach, Tonight's a massive win,
five to three. And I'm not sure if we have
enough time the rest of the show to break down
what exactly happened tonight, but I'll give it to you
and as as much of a summation as I can.

(36:43):
The Cubs took a two to nothing lead after a
happening Kate Snell, the fifth round pick of the Chicago
Cubs out of Alabama. He's got three RBIs in his
last two games. Really is finding it in Pro Bowl.
First career RBIs for him over the last couple of nights.
But Belloyd had an answer back. They scored three runs
in the bottom of the second. Then the Cubs the
bullpen takes over. It was a short start for Cub

(37:04):
starter Ivan auschen Beck. The bullpen coach just goes out
tonight and posts seven shutout innings. Yes, impeccable Cohen Moreno,
Cole Reynolds, Luis Martinez Gomez and Luis Brujano capped off
seven scoreless innings out of the bullpen. But I'll add
this layer to a coach. The sky cart tonight left
eleven men on base from the third through sixth innings.

(37:26):
Third through sixth innings, that's four frames. Belloit left at
least one man in scoring position. The Cub bullpen locked
down tonight and pitched their best ball when the lights
were their brightest and when the iron was the hottest.
And that's a sign to me, coach of a team
that's ready to win down the stretch in a playoff race.
The Cubs were battle tested tonight. And then as mentioned,

(37:47):
we're down three to two after a couple of innings,
tie the game in the fifth on a Christian Hernandez single,
take the lead in the sixth on a Drew Bowser single,
Edgar Alvarez launched a solo home run in the seventh
to extend the lead to five to three. So, coach,
what I told you last night. This Cubs team early
in the season, when they had the worst record in
the Midwest League, it seemed like every night, either the

(38:08):
hitting was great and the pitchers just didn't brought it up,
or vice versa, or there were some issues in the field.
Over the last few weeks, every sequence, every layer of
the game has backed up the next guy. And that's
the difference in the second half, because guys are picking
each other up and they're playing as a team. It's
been fun to watch, and.

Speaker 1 (38:25):
There's no question, and it's fun to listen to quite frankly,
and you've done this long enough to understand timely hitting
and great Yeah, pitching will win you an awful lot
of baseball games.

Speaker 8 (38:38):
Yeah, especially at this level, coach. And you know that's
really been this series. The Cubs have taken four of
the first five. And you know, there's only been really
one blowout where a game was non competitive. That was
on Wednesday when the Cubs demolished the Skycarp twelve to one.
Other than that, as mentioned, the Arms have had to
pick up the bats, right, They've had to pick up
the arms. At times there have been needed to be

(38:59):
some big infield. So this squad is playing as a
team right now, coach, and it's fun to be around
as a broadcaster, because again, these are the these are
the moments you do this job for. These are why
you have the late nights at the yard, especially the
fact you know this, we had an hour rain delay
to start the game and it still had it up
being a three hour game, so to labor eleven.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
All right, hang with me through this final break, okay,
and then we'll wrap it up with you and and
help celebrate the the move into first place by the Cubs.
Brendan King on the man on the call, the voice
of the South Bend Cubs. The Cubs were the five
to three win over the Beloit Skycard and setting up

(39:43):
heading down the home stretch. Not to be cliched by
any means, but some important ballgames. We're back and final break.
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports Song brought to
you by Indiana Donor Network. South Bend Cubs five to
three winners over the Beloit Skycarp taking over first place

(40:06):
Brendan King re joins us. All right, so you know
you celebrate now. I like how you put it, celebrate now,
but you understand there are plenty of games to play.
So what's the schedule look like in the remainder of
the season.

Speaker 8 (40:21):
Brendan Yeah, well let's start with tomorrow, coach, because as
I told you in the last segment, you know, tonight's
win is great, but you got to back it up
tomorrow because you lose tomorrow, you're right back to where
you started in a tie into division. So the South
Ben Cubs are going to return home on Tuesday night
to take on the Cedar Rapids Colonels. Now that's an
important factor, coach, because Cedar Rapids was the first half

(40:43):
champion from the West. They're already in the playoffs. So
what's funny is what's funny.

Speaker 1 (40:48):
The Cubs are big Colonels.

Speaker 8 (40:49):
Fans anytime they're not playing them because Cedar Rapids. Anytime
they play anybody else in the West Division. Of course,
the Colonels they can't clinch another playoff spot. They're already in. Right,
go undefeated in half number two and it wouldn't matter.
That's where it helps tonight for the Cubs, coach, because
tonight thea Rapids swept Quad Cities in a doubleheader. There

(41:09):
you go, Cities lost two games in one day, and
now they're gonna be three and a half games back
into division because of the Cedar Rapid sweep. Now that's
all gonna change on Tuesday because the Cubs are gonna
play Cedar Rapids in a six game series. So South
Bend won't be that big of fans of Cedar Rapids
when they show up to four Winds Shield on Tuesday night.
But that's gonna be a key homest Coach. You just

(41:31):
got to find a way to take care of business
and then the schedule the rest of the way. It's
a road trip to Peoria in the second to last
week and then a home stand against the Wisconsin timber Rattlers.
The last point I'll make here is those last two
series Peoria and Wisconsin have had very underwhelming second half performances.
That is your caboose of the Midwest League West. So
those are two teams that are pretty much already out

(41:54):
of it, coach. So the Cubs schedule is favorable, but
you're gonna have to go out and take care of business.
Because you know, ever know on a playoff runt.

Speaker 1 (42:01):
Yeah, that that classic situation of being in control of
your own destiny is right where you are. You know,
you know you win, you get a chance to win
a championship, you don't, you know, you think about you're
gonna come back and go. You wonder what would have happened.
So again, every athlete, you want to be in that

(42:22):
position where let's lace him up and go find out
who's better. And that's exactly what you're looking at.

Speaker 8 (42:29):
That's what you dream about on a baseball field. Coach,
whether you're a player, coach or broadcaster, you know, control
of your own destiny, rightful thing. So we'll see what
can happen over the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 1 (42:40):
Coach, can't wait, go celebrate. I appreciate you taking time.
Brendan King. South Bend Cubs with a five to three
win over Belloyd. Have a great weekend, Brendan, thanks for
the call, coach, Love you, Thanks, love you too. He's
the man, Brendan King. It's a fun night now, fun
night for the for the Cubs, fun night for the Colts.

(43:04):
Best of luck to the Fever tomorrow and their matchup
with Connecticut and thanks for joining us. Now, don't forget
Friday night high school Football Week number one. It's time.
It's time for my Thanks to a great group of

(43:25):
stations around the state for bringing you the show every
Friday Saturday Night. Thanks to Kai Tally, Thanks to everybody
involved with the show tonight. Thanks to all of you,
This is Indiana Sports Dock.
