Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
tawk on Bob lovel So glad you're with us on
a busy Saturday night, busy enough that we brought in
the heavy artillery. It's Network Indiana's Brendan King.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
All right, coach, what's going on? Great to be with
you and Caleb on a Saturday night. And let's talk
about a couple victories today within the Hoosier State. Starting
with number eleven Indiana, who handled Iowa twenty to fifteen,
that one looking closer towards the end because of a safety.
To complete that game, Stille Fernando Mendoza was excellent once more,
thirteen of twenty three for two hundred and thirty three yards,

(00:38):
two touchdown passes. He did throw a pick, but this
is a guy right now the fifth best odds in
the country to win the Heisman Trophy after that ball
game today, Indiana is five and oh on by next week,
and that buy seems like it a good time because
they're gonna have to fly out west to Oregon to
take on the Ducks in Eugene on October eleventh. That's

(00:59):
next up for the and O Hoosiers. As for the
Notre Dame fighting Irish, are we watching the same movie again?
Number twenty two? Notre Dame crushes Arkansas fifty six thirteen,
Irish at five hundred, with their record at two and two. CJ.
Carr brilliant three hundred and fifty four yards. How about
four touchdown passes? The Irish get Boise State at Notre

(01:19):
Dame Stadium next week at three point thirty pm. I'm
Brendan King.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Love of this Is Network,
Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk. I'm so glad you could join us.
A busy, busy night ahead, busy weekend. Clearly everybody's excited
about that. Later on tonight we'll talk about college football.
We'll also talk some high school football as we normally

(01:45):
do with Paul Condrey from the regional radio Sports Network.
And it's just a lot, a lot of things going on.
We're pleased to be joined by. We're talking some high
school football from last night. Glenn Gully from Lake Station
joins me. Coach, thanks so much of the call. How
did it go last night?

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Uh, you're sorry you cut out there for a moment.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
How did go last night, coach.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Pretty good, low rough, But it was a tight game
and we pulled off another win.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Who'd you beat last night, coach.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Bishop no Institute. This is one of our coms games
as well.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Big so big night right now, huge night? All right?
So what's the score? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Thirty six thirty one ending score?

Speaker 1 (02:38):
All right, you get you get a late score to
win it.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yes, it was pretty much tied, and uh we pulled
off a score and then actually they scored and kicked
the field go got within a couple of points of us,
and we were doing a good run and made a

(03:02):
few mistakes and had a punt and pinned up deep
at the two yard line, and a lot of defense
stealed the deal for us.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
That's good stuff. So was it close all night?

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah? I was back and forth. It was basically a shootout.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Shootout, all right? So who scores that game winner for you? Uh?

Speaker 3 (03:27):
That was Caden mcmill hold off standing gore.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Well, you know you moved to five and one, coach,
It says quite an accomplishment. I mean, you're playing great football,
are you not.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
H Yeah, absolutely, we've broke in several records. If you
haven't known already, it's the first time in twenty seven
years Lake Station is in the winning block.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
It just needed the right man coach. That's it, right.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Uh, it's been a hard road. This is my fourth
year coming into it, and you know, it's getting to
learn these kids and you know, these kids are different
from our generation and getting them to buy in. And
it was every year, you know, watching the growth and
making uh the changes, and you know, building my feeder program.

(04:23):
You know, from the first it's how war's up, you know,
getting them to one hundred percent to buy in. And
I had this freshman crew for four years. Now they're seniors,
and they came in hungry.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
They certainly seem to be. You've played You've played well
clearly all year long. It doesn't hurt. You got off
to a really really good start. Only Stumble has been
to West Central and uh that's a good football team.
So next week East Chicago Central comes to your place.
Another challenge for you. Should be a great ball game.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Yeah, absolutely, plus there and four A. We're in two A,
you know, so, and they have the speed. You know
it's gonna be definitely we got to have the right
defensive attack on them. And Keith quarterback who's top on
rushing yards right now? Keep them contained, you know, go ahead, coach,

(05:24):
that's the main objective of that game, so we could
contain them.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
We'll do good, all right. Coach Glenn Gully from Lake
Station High School with me. Last night, Lake Station beats
him and Bishop Noel thirty six thirty one to move
to five and one on the season. Coach, I really
appreciate you calling me. I wish you and your guys
nothing but the best the rest of the way.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Hey, I greatly appreciate it, and you have a good
night as well.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
We will thanks a lot. Coach Glenn Gully from Lake Station. Okay,
Dan King, welcome back. Glad you're here.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Glad to be n Everything's good.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Glad, Glad you're back. Really, it's it's lonely without you.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Oh, come on, go on. Everybody's keeping everybody's got to
keep it.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
What about your Irish today? I bought him. Everybody. All
of you should be happy. They win a big game.
H no problem at all with Arkansas fifty six thirteen.
So all is well in South Bend.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Everybody should be happy. And I listen, I'm the one
that's been trying to keep people off the ledges in
South Bend. Uh it is uh, there's no need to panic, right,
I mean, you lost to two good football teams. It
wasn't anything like last year with Northern Illinois. Of course,
in this twelve team playoff picture, if you can find
a way to win out, I think this Notre Dame
ball club is very capable of reaching the college football Playoff.

(06:51):
It's just that daunting task of winning out, which they
were able to do last year. But boy again, c J.
Carr coach, what can you say with three hundred and
fifty four yards? He was outstanding.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
He's Brendan King. He's with us every fifteen minutes. We're
glad he is. Short break and we're back on Network
Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk. Welcome back, everyone in Bob Lovel.
This is Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk. Glad you could
join us. University of Indianapolis beats Ashland today thirty three

(07:25):
twenty six. Coach Chris keebers Keevers joins me. Coach, thanks
for the call. Congratulations, we don't have coach. I'm sorry
about that. Here we do have speaking of you, Indy
is is the man himself. Greg Rigstrow, Hello, Greg, Hello, coach,
how are you obviously not very good? As I say,

(07:48):
I have a guest who's not on the line.

Speaker 4 (07:50):
I can tell you the final score of the You
Indie game. If you like, I cann get up there.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
What was that? I'm giving a score that was two
weeks ago or whatever.

Speaker 4 (07:57):
It was correct, but the outcome was the same as
equally as important. The youw Indy Greyhounds went to Kirkchiell,
Missouri and beat Truman State thirty to twenty. The Hounds
or two to zero and GLVC play. They probably played
two of the top teams in the league the first
two games out of the shot in terms of beating
McKendree and Truman State. If they can get passed up

(08:19):
for Iowa, it should be another GLVC crown for Chris
Gavers and company on the south side.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
If the McKendree win didn't open, beating Truman at Truman
certainly should. All right, you weren't You weren't doing anything today.
You started your day at Butler University. As Butler takes
on Marist and wins thirty one to twenty eight, that's
a heck of a win for the Dogs.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
Opens up Pine Er Football League play with a win.
Butler coming off a nine win season last year, which
was their most in eleven seasons. Reagan Andrew was out
due to injury, and last week's I lost against Weaber State.
He backs it up today by throwing touchdown passes, including
the game winner to Archie Cox with less than two
minutes to play. Bob, the league changed four times in

(09:07):
the second half. Wow, it was a great homecoming Saturday
at the Celic ball this afternoon.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Well, that's that's fun because it's just a number one.
It's a great place to play and number two. You
like how the Dogs have just continued, you know, Mikey
Rimovich moves up to Ball State, they just continue to win.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Correct And obviously Kevin Lynch knows that program so well,
didn't play there. He's the alumnus of Franklin College, such
as yourself, but literally grew up there when his dad
was on the staff or Frankly was working in the
administration at Ball University, and Bill was there being honored
for the seventy five team and for being the coach
of the eighty five team that both were conference championship

(09:49):
teams at Butler as well. Again for Butler, you know,
their season kind of resets once PFL play starts, so
they're one to zero again. Mike, you mentioned a great
of kind of advancing the ball forward. Looks like Kevin
is kind of is taking the ball and running with it.
Butler will kind of know a lot more about their
conference fate next week as they go to Saint Thomas

(10:10):
and Minnesota to play the Tommys.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
And good for good for the dogs. Okay, so we're
starting on the north side, drive down to campus what
I refer to as campus at ep U Y Carol
Stadium in Indy eleven two to one winners over Tulsa FC.
That's a big, big win tonight.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
You know your soccer Bob. Because FC Tulsa is in
first place in the Western Conference. Indy has now beaten
them twice. Once was in the Aegermeister Cup, which I
know is your favorite cup competition when it comes to
the Indy eleven. So that match did not count in
terms of the league's standings. This one very much did,
and that puts Indy eleven back in a playoff position

(10:56):
with four matches left to.

Speaker 1 (10:57):
Go outstanding, we know so much about soccer thanks to
you and listening to soccer Sunday on our fight ship station.
So thank you very much for the education.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
You're welcome. Brian Schaefer and Jack Blake with goals tonight
for the Indy eleven and for Jack Blake, he was
his twenty fifth goal in an Indie eleven uniform over
the last three seasons. He is now second in franchise
history in terms of goals scored. But in our eight
years in this league in the USL Championship, Jack now
stands alone as the franchises USL Championship leader in goals.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
Greg Rastrow, can you hang on through this school board
up date?

Speaker 5 (11:39):
Of course I can, Greg and I will come back
talk some more football and have some more fun scoreboard
up date with Brendan King coming up.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
This is Indiana Sports song.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Coach, Thanks so much. The Indiana Hoosiers are five and
oh as the number eleven Hoosiers roll over the Iowahawk
guys on the road fifteen from Iowa City, I you
now gets a bye before they will fly west to
Eugene to take on the number six Oregon Ducks after
next week's by Kurt Signetti doing another spectacular job with

(12:13):
the Hoosiers at five and zero spectacular job as well
for Fernando Mendoza, currently ranked with the fifth best odds
to win the Heisman Trophy at plus thirteen hundred. Mendoza
thirteen out of twenty three today for two hundred and
thirty three yards through the year and a couple touchdown passes.
He did throw one pick did not come back to
bite him as for the number twenty two Notre Dame
Fighting Irish five hundred record two and two. After opening

(12:35):
season losses to Miami and Texas A and M, the
Irish comeback with a fifty six to thirteen pounding of
Arkansas on the road in the SEC today. CJ. Carr
tremendous twenty two out of thirty for three hundred and
fifty four yards four touchdown passes.

Speaker 1 (12:50):
For CJ.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Carr, He's got seven hundred and thirty seven yards through
four games played on the year. Irish kid Boise State
next week at Notre Dame Stadium. Multi TI to teams
in the state on by this week. That includes Purdue,
who will take on number twenty three Illinois next week
at noon. Illinois after their embarrassing loss to Indiana last

(13:11):
week sixty three to ten, they were absolutely demolished. They
came back to beat USC today thirty four to thirty two.
So Illinois and Produce should be a good matchup next week.
Indiana State and Valparaiso on by as well as Greg
Rakestraw told you Butler took down Marris thirty one to
twenty eight on the Dogs Homecoming You. Indy is four
and one with their thirty to twenty win today over Truman.

(13:32):
I'm Brendan King.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
Welcome back everyone, this is Indiana's sports. Greg Rakestraw rejoins us.
All right, Colts in action tomorrow taking only a good
RAMS team. So what's happening with this matchup tomorrow?

Speaker 4 (13:47):
Well, the Colts are fired through the injury bug and
again this hits every team at some point in time,
so it's sprout kind of the Colts turn at bat,
So no Alec Pearce Ady Mitchell will be asked to
fill in that spot. No, kennymore Holt signed Mike Hilton,
who play for Leuan Arumo for many years with Cincinnati,
was in camp with Miami. Mackai Blackman will get some

(14:08):
more reps at corner as well.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
But Kenny Moore.

Speaker 4 (14:11):
Being out as something that historically has not gone well
for the Colts if they can overcome it this time.
And Matt Gonzalbus, who has made the move to right guard,
he is out with a toe injury, and so Dalton Tucker,
who filled in last year when Will Fries got hurt.
Second year pro to Marshall, it's kind of the first
moving piece on the offensive line so far this year.

(14:31):
So again, it is what it is. It happens to
every team at some point in time. Let's see how
the Colts can handle it against a pretty good Rams
team tomorrow afternoon.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Outstanding, all right, Greg Raystraw, can't do this without you.
You're the best. I'm glad you called. You have a
day off tomorrow? Well you know you don't, but you kind.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
Of because the game kicks off at four o'clock. Bob,
It's like I have a day off tomorrow, and because
it's a road game, going in shorts and flip flops,
so pretty much, I have a day off tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Block all right, have fun. I appreciate the call. Have
a great week. Okay, thanks Joach, thanks so much. Last
night was not a great night for our Indiana Fever.
They lose to the Las Vegas aces eighty four to
seventy two. Pat Boyling, the Voice of the Fever, joining,
this is a tough night. You're playing a you know,

(15:23):
a great team, great players. It just did not go
their way last night.

Speaker 6 (15:28):
Pat, Yeah, Bob, that's correct. And you know, when you
don't have Caitlin Clark, and frankly, when you have as
many injuries as you do, your margins for error is
just it's a lot smaller.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
And we have seen the.

Speaker 6 (15:41):
Team overachieve at a really impressive level and fairly consistently
over the last few weeks. But at the end of
the day, I thought a game like last night was
an example of just how then your margin prayer is
with right injuries. Kelsey Mitchell doesn't have a poor game,
mighty stretch of the imagination, but she didn't have her

(16:02):
best shooting night. And then when you don't have her
going and Eliot Boston was terrific defensively, but she didn't
have a great offensive night, and when you don't have
one of those two, you know, having big nights without Clark,
without all these injuries sometimes really a challenge to score.
And so unfortunately that's just the position that they're in
right now. They've overcome it, and a really big Game

(16:25):
four is coming up to the Shield House tomorrow afternoon,
and the Fever will try to survive, keep their season
alive and force the do or to die Game five
back in Vegas.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
See pat, I would think that they have no margin
for air as opposed to it being slight. They don't
have any margin for air in a situation they're in
playing a team like the Aces, and so yeah, everything
you have to play a nearly flawless game, which is hard.
The pressure's on you, but the crowd will pick them up.

(16:57):
It'll be crazy then games tomorrow and they will need
all of that help, no question.

Speaker 6 (17:04):
And you know the position that the Fever are in
right now, it's a challenging one. They've got to win
their next two games. If they lose either of them,
you know they'll be eliminated. But it's the exact same
position they were just in about a week and a
half ago, that best of three series in the first
round against Atlanta. The Fever got down one zero, needed
to come back home and get a win to force
that decisive Game three. They did come back, they were

(17:26):
energized by a great crowd. They won that game too,
moved on to Game three and then you know, shocked
Atlanta in Atlanta, and as you know, well you get
to a one game situation, if you can get tried,
you want to talk about margin Perer going out the
window in a one game series. In that type of scenario,
anything can happen. So the Fever proved that last round.

(17:48):
They've got to get a win here on Sunday to
do that against Las Vegas. But if they can, you know,
they're right back to one game to make the w
NBA Finals, which is a spectacular sentence.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
To be saying anything. Yeah, there's certainly one.

Speaker 6 (18:01):
Considering all of the circumstances that have hit them this year.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Yeah, I couldn't agree more. I think it's they're fun.
You know, you love their grit. You love you talk
about teams having personality. I love the personality this team asked.
This is a team that as a group. Number one,
they're not backing down from a soul, which I admire.
And number two, they play They absolutely love each other

(18:29):
and play for one another, which is another hard thing
to do in any professional sport. And I just think
it's an incredibly inspiring story, to be honest, no question.

Speaker 6 (18:41):
And the chemistry, you know, part of what you're talking
about there. You just see it when you watch them play.
I mean it's evident to anybody that might even be
a casual fan right basketball, The chemistry this team has
is evident. It honestly reminds me a lot of the
chemistry the Pacers had.

Speaker 4 (18:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (18:58):
Absolutely, where you've got teams overachieving, not different circumstances, but
still overachieving in the playoffs, and in large part, I
think because the Pacers were the most together team I
think in the NBA last year, at least in the playoffs,
and I think the Fever might be the most together
team in the WNBA this year. They really hit a

(19:20):
huge fork in the road. They had a fight or
flight type moment early on in the season. Caitlin Clark
suffers a couple of injuries right to want to Bonder
leave the team. They were getting hit with other injuries
left or right, and it would have been really easy
in that moment to just kind of say, listen, this
isn't our year. Too many circumstances against us, you know, mentally,

(19:42):
let's you know, play for next year, or maybe we're
not at the top of our game because we just
know how challenging this is going to be. The opposite
has happened. This team came together, you know. It strengthened
their resolve. It certainly strengthened their chemistry. And now I
think you're seeing a byproduct of that.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Now.

Speaker 6 (19:59):
I think all the challenges at the beginning of the
season made this team get a lot closer now. A
game last night is a perfect example of how much
you still miss Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham too. And
I don't mean to be dismissive of any of the
other injuries, but one team here is missing its best
player and the other team has four Olympians. So that's
what you're sacked against me. But you're still in a

(20:21):
position where, right win tomorrow one game to make the
WNBA finals.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
What time's the game tomorrow?

Speaker 6 (20:29):
Three o'clock.

Speaker 1 (20:31):
I'm so glad I mowed my grass today. That gives me, well,
you know what, I'm not glad, but at least gives
me some time. I'm not great on time management, So
tune in to Pat. You'll have a good time. Pat
Boiling talking about the fever lost the last night to
the Aces. Need a game. Gotta have a win tomorrow

(20:52):
and at gamebridge Field lost. Pat. Thank you for taking
time out of a busy evening, have a fantastic weekend.

Speaker 6 (20:59):
Of course, good to chat with you as always.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Thank you, take care. Coming up top of the hour
scoreboard update. This is Indiana Sports Tunk.

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
