Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good eating everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
Talk on Bob Lovell, and we're glad you're with us.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
We got a lot of football to talk about.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
A lot of football, plus some racing, some basketball, all
of that plus more. Right now that we turn it
over to the start of the show, it's Network Indiana's
Nathaniel Finch Coach Lovell.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Man, is it good to be back here with you
and our producer Caleb Zuver downtown Indianapolis on Monument Circle.
And like you said, what a day it was with
college football fully back in state, teams playing left and right.
Let's start right there. How about in Division One, we'll
start with the Purdue boiler Makers. It's the start of
the Barry Odemara and man, did it look good today?
(00:42):
Thirty one to zero, the boiler Makers getting a win
over the end State Ball State Cardinals. Certainly don't like
to see that for that MAC team, but again, this
is a big ten squad that Mikey Romovich, in his
first game with Ball State is playing. Don't judge the
Cardinals until they get into some MacPlay. Kud for the
boy the Makers today thirty one to zero, the win
(01:02):
at home. They scored quickly, they scored often. Ryan Brown
over three hundred yards passing and two touchdowns his first
game as the full time starter. Devin maccabee with just
about sixty yards and a touchdown today as well, Brown
scored a touchdown on the ground, so three total for
that young man. And this is a squad that looked good.
The receiving corps was solid today, as was hoped coming
(01:25):
into the season, and Barry Otom getting things off on
the right foot today in West Lafio. Let's talk about
what happened in Bloomington today as well. A win for
the twentieth thranked Indiana Hoosiers twenty seven to fourteen over
Old Dominion. Fernando Mendoza in his first game nearly two
hundred yards passing as well. Nathaniel Finch.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Welcome back everyone, This is India the sports song. Thank
you for listening to the show last night. We appreciate
you joining us. Apologize for my stupidity towards the end
of the show with creating a technical air.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Was fun night.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
We had seven calls last night. I was it's like
the best they like the old days, to be honest,
it was. It was so much fun tonight in a
little slower pace, but still an awful lot of good
things to talk about. Nathaniel Fitch, And thanks for calling
me last night. You had a you had a game.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
What game? Remind me what game you had last night?
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Your boys?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Coach?
Speaker 3 (02:19):
It was Franklin the Risley Cubs. Chris calls squad getting
a win over Mount Vernon.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
They were listen, they're pretty good. They're gonna be okay,
they really are. And he is a tremendous let me
tell you what, he's as good as guy as you're
ever gonna meet.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
And he also happens to be a pretty good football coach.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
I'll tell you what they want by a few touchdowns.
But it was a close game until late, so it
was a lot of fun. It was certainly fun to
be sitting in my chair. And like you said, this
is going to be a good squad.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Two and zero.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Now they're looking for the first winning season in the
last few years. But I think they have a good
chance to do that, and maybe more because of how
good they looked these last couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
All right, Nathaniel, hang on, we're gonna turn to the
best at what he does.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
It's network Indiana's favorite, Greg Rastraw.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
From the Colts Network, i SC Network voice of the
I You, I You Indy Men's basketball team.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
I had to struggle with.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
That Greg as as you know, and he's on every
outlet it's out there because he's the best at what
he does. Tough luck tonight for the Indy eleven. I
only want you to call me when we're.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Talking about w's now. Come on, come on.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
I lost to Low City, which is well, frankly a
part of the course. You know lou City, and you've
heard me talk about this over the years. They're the
best team outside of Major League Soccer in terms of
American soccer, right you know. They they win a lot.
They have literally lost one league match so far this season.
Indy got a goal in the second minute from ro
(03:43):
Mario Williams, but Aiden McFadden would tie it up by halftime,
then two quick goals in the opening ten minutes of
half number two and Lucidy's kind of threw jabs at
the Indi eleven from that point in time. On so
first meeting the two teams this season, Indy will try
again on October the fourth, and this now begins a
pretty rough closing stretch for the Indy eleven. They will
(04:05):
play six of nine on the road to finish the season,
next three on the road, all against teams that are
above them in terms of the playoff standing. So it's
kind of do or die time for Sean McCauley and
company entering the final two months of the season.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
Who's mad at them at the league office? Seriously? Those
are the kind of schedules you give to people you
don't like.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
I was gonna say this, this is Bobby Living phone
calls from college basketball coaches in the days in the right.
Why are you trying to put it to me? What
have I ever done to you?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
I wish that was holly. I wish that's holly sounds.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
I gave you the radio friendly version of that.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Believe me, all right, so tell me, please tell me
on behalf of yourself and your family.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
You're going to take a night off tomorrow night.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
Well, yeah, I'm off tomorrow night. I'm doing the Indianapolis
Indians game with Howard tomorrow afternoon, so I'm working in
the afternoon and then I'm off tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
You see, after news don't count. I mean, like they
got no we don't count after news, So that's good. Well,
good for you, all right, can you wait another week
before the Colts?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Does it seem.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
To you you've been in it since the open camp
and all of that, it must sound seemed to you
like an interminable amount of time before they start and
before they actually get the first ball game.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
Well, this is the change when they went to seventeen
games in the regular season and three games in the preseason,
which is now this is the fifth year that we
have done that. That happened after COVID. This is the
last call before the storm. Yeah, so tomorrow is my
last Sunday without Colts football until November sixteenth. So this
(05:46):
this has turned into it was frankly a light week
of practice because the first part of the week is
about setting the fifty three man roster, then figure out
the practice squad. Guys practice Wednesday and Thursday, and it's like,
all right, everybody, scatter, we'll see you back here on
Monday and then let's go to work for Miami. So
this is everybody's last chance to get a breath in
before the grind really starts up again. As of Monday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Well, when the grind starts up. I think this team
can be reasonably good.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
I think so too. I think they've got to stay healthy,
but I think they have got pieces in place around
the quarterback and Daniel Jones is the guy that has
won the respect of the locker room pretty quickly. I
think this can be a ten win team and a
playoff team. But again, I think things have to kind
of fall into place for them, and let's hope that
it goes that way.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
You're saying the same thing about a lot of teams
though they they're capable, and everyone's one injury, two injuries
away from having a miserable type season. So yeah, but
hold that thought though, because when we come back, I
want to talk a little bit more about it. Greg
Rakestraw will stay with us to this short break. We'll
come back and talk some colts football roster is set,
(07:00):
just getting ready for next Sunday's opener and have some
fun with that. So we'll come back later on tonight
college football. We're gonna talk some racing that time of year.
Greg Graystrow returns after this short break on Network Indiana's
Indiana Sports song Welcome back the Man himself. Greg Raystrow
(07:21):
returns with us. We're talking about the Colts. They're finished
with working out rosters, said Greg, were there surprises in
terms of the final cutdown and who stayed and who went?
Speaker 4 (07:34):
You know, I think to a certain degree Juju Brent's
being let go of a surprise, But unfortunately Juju again
just couldn't stay healthy. You know, much has been made
to the fact that Anthony Richardson played in fifteen games
the first two years, Juju played an eleven. And there's
also simply put, this is going to be a more
aggressive defense inner Louanna Rumo, and so if you look
(07:57):
at the turnover of the roster, it was primarily at
the corner position where there were the most amount of
changes changes. Sam Womack was a guy that I thought
played well for the team last year. He was a
waiver wire pickup after training camp for the Niners, and
he was a starter more weeks than not. He's longer
with the team. He got picked up by Tennessee. Chrys
(08:18):
Lamonds was a guy that had spent time with the
team in the last two years. Wasn't part of the
offseason workout program, but was signed early in training camp.
I've got played pretty well in the preseason. He's on
the active roster either, you know. So you know they
brought an Xavien Howard leyden camp. They made a trade
for a player from the Vikings, you know, late in
terms of really after the third and final preseason game
(08:41):
where they've lost Justin Walley for the year, their third
round pick they really liked. But they obviously spent pending
big money on the Shavarius Ward, you know, to kind
of be a part of the mix there too. So
the cornerback room is going to look a lot different.
To be honest with you, Bob, there was not many
I would say, battles for a final roster spot, so
(09:01):
much of the conversation was whom the quarterback was going
to be, and when that was announced the week before,
you know, the Bengals game, a lot of the rosters
decisions just kind of snapped into place. But the one
kind of most attention grabbing cut from this week on
Tuesday was Juju Brents being let go and he was
quickly been snatched up by the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
It's the harsh reality of the NFL and the injuries
are part of it, and you feel badly for him,
but I think we understand.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
So the opener now is in just a little over.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
A week, the seventh of September, opening up at home
against the Dolphins, and then the great thing they get
their first two at home. They played the Dolphins and
then the Broncos. I think we all understand, especially in
the situation they're in having not been in the playoffs
in a while, it really be nice to get a
great start.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
Well I'm not sure you need this reminded to you,
but just in case Mason's.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Been under a rock.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
Colts have won their opener since twenty thirteen.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah, put in perspective.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Terrell Pryor was the starting quarterback that day for the
then Oakland Raiders, the last time the Colts won their
opener exactly, so it's been a minute since since that.
I had one kid in not two, and both my
kids are double digit years old, so again you get
the idea as to how long it has been. I
don't think the first two games are easy. I think
(10:27):
it's pretty unique. Actually, kind of the two teams that
the Colts were probably most in conversation with for the
seventh and final playoffs spot last year are the two
teams they play at home the first two weeks of
the season in terms of the Dolphins and the Broncos,
and you know they're gonna get the Dolphins with Tuatunga Biola,
there's been a big difference in that team when he
has played versus when he hasn't played. So we'll see
(10:49):
what they look like in week number one. I would
say this, I think the schedule gets tougher as it goes.
You play four of the first six at home. I
think there's an opportunity there where if you can get
four or even five of your first six or seven games,
(11:10):
it gives you an opportunity late. The other kind of
unique quirk about this schedule, Bob, is that they don't
see the Jaguars nor the Texans until Thanksgiving weekend. They
play those teams for four of their last seven games
they play during the season.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
So again, if you can just be in the conversation
at five hundred a little bit above right, then you
can take care of your own business over the final
month of the season.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
He's Greg Regstraw.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
He's the best of what he does. Greg has always
have fun. I appreciate the time, enjoy your time off
what little it will be tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
But thanks for taking time to join me.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
You got a bob.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
Coming up top to r school board update with Nathaniel Finch.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
This is Indiana Sports Talk.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
He's Nathaniel Finch with your Indiana Sportstock scoreboard up date.
The Indiana Hoosiers twentieth ranked on the preseason poll, twenty
seven to fourteen. The home win today against Old Dominion.
Here is a not very happy head coach kurtz Signetti.
Speaker 5 (12:17):
I'd called a pedestrian win at best. A lot of
kind of weird things happened in the first half, but
we took control of the game and really had him
at the point where we could have just put him away,
and we were unable to and that was what was
disappointing kind of to me.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
So you get the multiple touchdown win. I know, coach Lovell,
You've done this plenty of times and you're just not satisfying.
I'm sure he was ripping into the locker room post game.
But you get the win regardless. Twenty seven to fourteen.
The score of the win over Old Dominion. The new
quarterback transfer from cal Fernando Mendoza nearly two hundred yards passing.
He had a rushing touchdown today and he led the
(12:51):
Hoosiers to the twenty seven to fourteen win. It was
successful to start the Barry Odamara thirty one to zero.
The boy the Makers get to win over the end
state team, the ball State Cardinals, the alma mater of
our producer Caleb Zuver and a big time game from
the new quarterback Ryan Brown over three hundred yards passing
two touchdowns through the air, one on the ground. Devin
(13:12):
Makabi also scores thirty one zero. The boil Makers get
the season started on the right foot. Elsewhere in Division
one football, Valparrezo Beacon sixty seven to ten to win
over the Virginia Lynchburg Dragons. And for the Butler Bulldogs,
it was a loss today. They played Northern Iowa, a
tough team there. Thirty eight to fourteen is the final
score of that one. Plenty more to get to a
(13:34):
couple scores for you. In baseball, coach, your Cardinals beat
the Reds four to two. That one in Cincinnati, the
Guardians just defeated the Mariners four to three.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Is that final score.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
We'll have plenty more for you throughout the afternoon.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Welcome back everyone, This is Network Indiana's Indiana's Sports Talk.
All Right, Nathaniel Finch, talk to me about the Fever.
We're getting down to the what's going on with that group.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
How about the big win last night.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
I'm certainly that's a great win for them last night.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
You come from behind, you win by a penny, You
beat a team that you haven't beat all year, although
you certainly should have. They're near the bottom of the standings,
are the Sparks. But it's on the road, and you
know you're late in the season, only six games left
now five And it certainly is coach, You've coached plenty
of times where it doesn't matter how good the team
is when it's that late in the year, all the
(14:28):
pressure is there. The winner gets to basically go to
the playoffs, then anything can happen. It is good to
see the Fever come back and win the game.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
What's amazing to me is their resiliency. I know it's
a word that's tossed around a lot. It's easy to do,
but when you think about the literal change over of
their roster because of injuries, most notably to Cable and Clarcas.
Everyone knows, but you've lost really important players off of
that team, and it's hard to get rhythm. It's hard
(14:56):
to get you know, on some momentum when you're trying
to fight to get into playoffs, you want to be
in that type of mode where it just comes, you're flowing,
everything is going, and it's hard to do when people
are hurting. So to me, it's amazing that they players
have hung together, coaches, they've all hung together as a
(15:16):
group and they just go out and play well.
Speaker 3 (15:19):
And to your point, coach Kaitlyn Clark, she's not going
to play tomorrow night they are in Golden State. Tell
you more about the magnitude of that matchup, but this
will be her twenty seventh missed game of the season.
They also have three players who have missed season ending
injuries and will not play the rest of the year.
So to your point, yeah, huge, huge losses, a lot
of those point guards. So now you have to bring
(15:40):
in players off the street to run your offense, which
it's certainly not easy to do, and it's been impressive.
I think, like you said, resilience has been thrown around
a lot, but it's a necessary word because they have
been absolutely resilient. So they beat the Sparks last night.
They now have a three game lead over LA with
just five games left, So you kind of feel good
about that one. You feel really good out the Fever
(16:00):
chances to make the playoffs. You know, they're currently sixth
in the standings that the eight teams get into the
Big Dance, and now it's just kind of well, one,
you got to make sure you don't collapse and lose
that playoff spot. But at the very least you're wondering,
what do they end up six seventh or eighth, because
you're probably not going to jump up over New York
at fifth. Yeah, so you have a half game lead
over Seattle, who you beat earlier this week, and then
(16:22):
you have a one game lead over Golden State for
eighth place. So guess what. You travel to their barn
and play tomorrow at the Chase Center, the NBA's Golden
State Warriors Arena. You play them tomorrow if you lost
to them there before this season, So a huge, huge game,
to say the least, coming up tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Well, I think it's also amazing what we talk about
what Coach White and her staff have done in the players.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Give the front office credit.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
You know you were able to add people to your
roster who have come in and made impacts immediately. Talk
about being able to evaluate talent, being able to put
all these deals together.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
There's a skill involved in that. Done extremely well in
that regard.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
And you know, we've talked to Stephanie White about this
previously on the fan or flagship station for this program,
and you know, asking about these player acquisitions. Of course,
she has a huge say in who they're bringing in,
but that is a lot of the front office, so
she says she leaves up a lot of that to
the front office, whether you know, these emergency contracts, the
hardship deals that they're bringing in players on ten day contracts,
(17:22):
she leaves a lot of that up to the front office.
And to your point, they have hit on a good
chunk of those, one of those being Airy McDonald who
later blows her knee and is out for the rest
of the year, and that's a huge blow. So you know, again,
you bring these girls off the street, they play really well,
then they get hurt and it's just it's kind of
bad luck playing for the Fever right now, and you
hope they can kind of get things squared away. Like
(17:43):
I said, only a few games left in the regular season,
but maybe you can get Caitlin Clark back in the
flow for a game or two. Sure postseason starts and
see what you can't do in the dance. You just
have to make the dance and it wants.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
To get through.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Who knows if you weren't already. I don't see how
you can't be a fan of what they're doing. I
think you're not a sports fan if you don't enjoy
and appreciate and respect the story that they're putting out
and how they're doing it and how they've been able
to accomplish what they've done.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
I'll tell you about coach. If I were to ask
you your favorite team, maybe the team you're most proud
of coaching. You're not gonna tell me. I'd imagine the
team that you know won the most games and just
rolled through everybody. It's going to be the team that
went through the adversity Sharf saw really grow and battle.
And that's the case here. Sure everybody wants to be
thirty one and eight like the top ranked Links, but
why not be a team like the Fever where you're
(18:32):
battling You've been below five hundred for a good chunk
of the year. You're right, you know, new players off
the street into your lineup a day or two later.
Why not be that team and get to enjoy a
little bit of that that fun sports story.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
Yeah. I try not to think of my favorite, you
know what. I love them all, so I try not.
It's like children, you know, you try not to to
favor one over the other.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
But in point of fact, I think my first team
at IUPUI might have been my favorite. When you talk
about overcoming odds. It never had a winning season. I
come in and take over for coach Melgarland, who was
suffering from cancer, and I come in late. I mean
(19:19):
I actually joined the team in late August and take over, and.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
You know, it's just.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
It was tough. I felt so badly for those kids,
and you know, they had different styles.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
Coach Garland was a nice guy, very father figure for
those kids and all of that. I'm far from that.
I was thirty one when I got it and out
of control.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
Looking back on it, I understand what nobody liked me.
I wouldn't blame you if you didn't like me, because
I wasn't easy to like.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
But we that group managed to.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
Get a winning season and make it into THENI District
playoffs for the first time ever. And that group IU
Indy is not a Division One team without that bunch
because they set.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
The tone and we were able to, you know, build
on it and grow with it and that. But you
understand what that's about. All right, So college football today,
what'd you think? What do you think about you? I
heard the SoundBite with coach Signetti. I don't blame him.
I think you know, you're a Big ten team and
you're playing somebody knocked from that level.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Of competition, So yeah, you should dominate them. And pedestrian
is probably a mild word compared to what he would want.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
To say and compared to what he probably said in
the locker room. Right, it's oh, a team that you're
at home, you open the season, You've got the entire
off season to prepare for this team. Like you mentioned,
this is not a power for school. You know, the
people out west thought you'd win by twenty four more points.
You only win by thirteen today. And I mean they
were down on the scoreboard for nearly the.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Entire fifth quarter. They scored on a long punt.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
Return as kind of as time expired on the first quarter,
So you didn't come out hot. You kind of had
to rebound. Now you get to win, you get you know,
you still win twenty seven to fourteen. You got to
be happy with that at the very least. But yeah,
I think he was wanting to see some more points,
and I think he wanted to kick his feet up
a little bit more in the second half than he
probably did.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
We'll talk a little later about that game with John
Herrick that is coming up. This is Network Indiana's Indiana
Sports Tuck
