Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
I'm Bob Lovell. It's brought to you by Indiana Donor Network.
Busy day of football, Busy, busy day of football. We've
got a lot of college football to talk about, plus
colts in action tomorrow afternoon. Right now, though, take you
a little time to spend with you with the star

(00:20):
of our show. It's Network Indiana's Jace Hodges.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Pleasure to be with you, coach on this Saturday night
with our producer Caleb Zoover. I'm Jay so Hodge for
this Indiana Sports Talk updates. In terms of college football,
coach like you mentioned a lot of things going on
around the college football world, including the Notre Dame Fighting Irish,
who are currently in action on their home field. The
eighth ranked Irish currently down twenty eight to twenty four
against the sixteenth ranked Texas A and m Aggie's been

(00:45):
a minute and four left in the first half there
due to a stop is due to an injury for Perdue.
They currently trail as well. Late in the fourth quarter,
they are down thirty two seventeen against the USC Trojans.
Ball State gets the win thirty four to twenty nine
over New I'm sure. And yesterday night number twenty two
Indiana they got the win seventy three zero over Indiana State.

(01:07):
There's u other games going on around the nation. Number
one Ohio State having some difficulties with the Ohio Bobcats.
They now lead though twenty three to nine to the
number one ranked Buck Guys in Major League Baseball, the Cardinals.
They're up three to one in Milwaukee. The Cubs get
the the Clubs lose I should say five to four
against Rays at home. The White Sox and Guardians played
with a three to one Guardians win. Then Cincinnati read.

(01:29):
They have first pitch at ten to oh five against
the Athletics in Zaca Ramento Minor League Baseball. The Indians
they lead to nothing currently late in that one. Their
half game back at Toledo in the International League.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Welcome back everyone, glad you could join us. Those of
you who joined us last night on week number four
of high school football. Thank you. We appreciate you investing
your time, spending your time with us. We have plenty
of choices you can make to do with your time
and to choose to listen to our show. We appreciate

(02:01):
that greatly, and so it was fun. Paul Condrey and
I will talk about it later on tonight, recapping what
happened last night. Some great matchups, some some we creep toward,
we're out creeping. We're running toward postseason play. Clearly we're
looking at week number five, So we're gonna talk a

(02:22):
little bit about that, plus look back at what happened
last night. Also coming up tonight, the Fever are in
action tomorrow, opening round of the of the playoffs. It's
got a great ring to it, does it? Not the playoffs,
that's fantastic. It's three thirty start and that's gonna be

(02:44):
that's gonna be fun. We're gonna spend some time with
Scott Agnes from the Field Outs Files talking about that.
Colts in action tomorrow afternoon at four o'clock. Is that right?
Jas four o'clock start?

Speaker 3 (02:59):
That is correct for tomorrow for kickoff?

Speaker 1 (03:01):
All right? So what do you think? Give me the rundown?
Be my expert tonight. You got to help me. You're
the guy, tell me what's going on?

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, coach, So obviously a great win Week one for
the Colts, and you know, it's kind of funny. The
Colts have a one in the win column in a
Week two football game for the first time, and now
what has been twelve years, Brian, But I mean the Colts. Tomorrow,
we'll see Daniel Jones. I mean the Denver Broncos defense
one of the best in the league. They shut down
cam Ward and the titles last week. So the Broncos
are gonna represent a much differ of a test than

(03:31):
we saw last week with Miami's defense.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
That's the thing right there. You got to find a
way to move the chains against the group like that,
and it's a lot easier said than done. So if
I'm sitting in my house with the remote control in
my hand, that's the that's the way to play this
right Tomorrow, watch the Fever, Watch the Colts. So fever

(03:55):
started three is it three or three thirty three o'clock,
three o'clock and at four o'clock, oh with it. Look
it works out pretty well. You get a full a
full hour of Fever basketball and then you can just
play back and forth. That's great. And I'm thinking that
the weather forecast is rain, So I was supposed to,

(04:17):
you know, do some work outside today. Dog gone. It
it's raining, so I got to reprieve on that. Hopefully
I can get another reprieve tomorrow. Also coming up tonight,
we're going to talk college football. A lot of college
football boilers, as you heard, are hanging in there against

(04:40):
Southern col I. You overwhelmed Indiana State last night. And
small college football today, some really really good games going on,
and again, as we normally have, we have some really
solid small college football teams. Really really good small college

(05:00):
football teams are around the state. In action today. All right, Caleb,
excuse me, Jase. Colts in action tomorrow. Obviously one n O.
As you point out, everybody knows that going up against
a difficult defense in the Denver Broncos. What's the injury report? Like?

(05:23):
Are we relatively healthful? Healthy for tomorrow?

Speaker 3 (05:27):
It's kind of in and out.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
We came out a week one thinking, yeah, we're mostly
all right, but Tarvarius Awards self reported concussion symptoms the
day after the game. He is going to be out tomorrow.
So the cornerback one for the Colts is going to
run out. We also lost Dalen Jones now to g
I are we got her on a punt return last
week against Miami he's going to be out due to
that injury in the Colts a little bit, a little

(05:48):
bit if he in the cornerback department heading into tomorrow's
a game against the Broncos.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Okay, and bo Nix is a guy who struggled in
Game one, so we're hopeful that the front seven can
put enough pressure on him that cover up a little
bit of possible deficiencies in the backfield. Is that the
game plan?

Speaker 2 (06:09):
You would assume that's the game plan, Yaffer tomorrow. I
mean the Cults. We saw a great push last game
against Miami with the Forrest Buckner, Grover Stewart, the two
defensive ends. Layoutsu Lotsu had a great game as well.
He's questionable heading inst tomorrow as well as Layoutsu Lotsu.
He had a great game clean the interception and coverage
for the Colts last week, but lots of a question mark,
But he probably is going to play. When it comes

(06:29):
down to it. The Cults are going to need all
the pressure they can get from the front four.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
See we all kind of tend to forget that. As
this season progresses, it gets a little more a little diceier,
so to speak, in terms of injuries. Everybody goes through them.
And if you expect to make a run, legitimate run
for the playoffs, you need to have quality depth across
the board. Certainly easier said than done. That's a hard

(06:56):
thing to do, so well, we'll see how that goes.
All right, coming up short break, I've got a lot
to talk about. So it's one of those basketball football nights,
college football, high school football, and the NFL. That's all
coming up. We're glad you're with. This is Indiana Sports Talk.

(07:16):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports Talk, brought to
you by Indiana Donor Network Driven the number two Saved
Lives dot or org is their website. All right, Jace
Hodge is every fifteen minutes doing Scooreboard. All right, Jace,
I am told that you are a not Youre Dame
fan and you're currently slightly concerned about your guys.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Just a wee bit.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
They're down twenty eight to twenty four at halftime against
Texas A and m We know, with Notre.

Speaker 3 (07:44):
Dame falling and week number one in Miami.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
You don't want to say must win and week number three,
but Notre Dame at oh to one is almost a
must win.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
Scenario.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
This is the last Ranks game they have on their schedule.
You know, with them being an independent school not in
the conference, them going ten and two might not cut
it when it comes down at the committee.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
Help me understand the concept. I thought every game they
played was a must win. According to you, you Notre
Dame fans.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Well, that was the old concept when it was a
four team playoff. Now it's a twelve team. I mean,
you just keep getting bigger, it seems, so it isn't
must win until you lose a game. But we lost
a game already, so you got to think I must
win here against a recD opponent. And yet the end
of the half there was not great.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
Let's just say that we only down four, correct.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Correct, But it could have been a whole lot worse.
We've just explained to you what happened on the last
play of the half there. So Notre Dame has a
fourth and thirteen. CJ. Carr is walking to the sideline
and anger he claps his hand, so the center snaps
the ball and they lose like fifteen yards.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Yikes.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
He claps his hands incidentally, and the center heard it
and he's at the ball. Yeah, almost cost him three points,
but A and missed the field goal.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Wow, it's it's not looking too good right now because
Notre Dame's defense just is not up to par from
you know, last year, not names defense was one of
the top ones in the nation. Sure it was, but
was just not showing that kind of same defense they
had last year. They lose Ader Watts to the NFL
now is an Atlanta Falcon. They lose a guy as well
to the Ravens, one of one of their cornerbacks to
the Ravens in the NFL draft as well. So the
defensive backs just aren't up to park like they were

(09:10):
last year. But they're doing what they can. But A
and M is really exploding right now down on the field.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Well, I mean, let's give credit where credits due. A
and M is ranked. Also, yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Shud been thoroughly impressed with the receiver Mario Carver. He
has one hundred and seventy three yards a half.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Stikes at half time at halftime, one hundred and seventy
three and seventy three. So my guess is the halftime
speech might be we might make an adjustment or two
on mister Carver, maybe double him, maybe triple him what
you would think.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
But then again, Notre Dame is having some issues in
the run game as well. The running back for a
and m Levon Moss has has three touchdowns.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Yikes.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Yeah, so it's a little bit of a it's a
little bit of a kind of a double entendre, like there,
you know, what do you stop?

Speaker 3 (09:56):
What do you do? What do you what happened?

Speaker 1 (09:58):
Well, I made a living as a basketball coach, So
you got the right you got the wrong guy. That's
why you have defensive coordinators on board. So how long
have you had this this love affair with the Irish?

Speaker 2 (10:15):
My whole life. I got it from my dad. My
dad was an under name football fan. I you basketball fan.
I'm the exact same way.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
Okay, this is good to know. So they're trailing by
four to half and things aren't looking They're down four and.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
You think, get the bought a half time though, So
there's at a half time there's a plenty of time
to do something. The offenses looks mostly okay for the
most part. Obviously a true freshman or a retro freshman
quarterback and CJ. Carr struggles. He has issue that's going
to be any quarterback. You know, a fresh face of
a quarterback pacing off against one of the better defenses,
one of better teams in the nation. So he's had
his problems, but he's played well for the most part.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Right, Lynn clarkle join us after the ball game, give
us a little postgame report, Jason, and I'll talk about
it throughout the night. Up with the boiler Makers. Update
me on that.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Last I saw coach, they were down thirty to seventeen,
and that still does rain true. Down thirty to seventeen
with about five and a half minutes ago, USC has
the ball, we're gonna put the game bay.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Yeah, I think the coach odim I have no doubt
it's gonna do well during his tenure there. But he
did not get any favors out of the Big ten
office and scheduling on his first time around. So this
is a little bit of a demanding schedule in front
of him. So there there is that, But there is

(11:36):
still a lot of time, a lot of things can happen.
All Right, Jace, We're coming up to you in just
a few seconds. I'm going to continue to talk about
football squeeze in some fever basketball discussion. Playoffs coming up tomorrow.
A great, great thing for the franchise, without question, to
get into playoffs. Has been a while since they've been
in it. So we'll talk about that later on tonight.

(11:58):
Scoreboard update coming up with Jace Hodge is this is
Indiana's Sports Talk.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Once again, Coach. Pleasure to be with you and our
producer Caleb Zuver on the Saturday night I'm Jace Hodge
with this network Indiana Sports Update.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
You mentioned the Indiana Fever.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Their first game game one of the w NBA Playoffs
is tomorrow afternoon. They're in Atlanta taking on the Atlanta Dream.
The Fever got in as the sixth seed in the
w n B A and match up with a rival
in Atlanta in the first round. A season series was
tied two games a piece, and head coach Deephanie White
had something to say about the differences between Atlanta earlier
this year and how they look now.

Speaker 4 (12:32):
I think the first thing is is just the change
in the starting lineup. You know, the last time we played,
they were still starting both bigs. You know, it allows
them a little bit more versatility and how they're able
to play, you know, utilizing their post players in a
lot of different ways as they've gone through the season
and been able to adjust and how they get them
touches and then how they work their three point shooting
around it. So you know, for us, we got to

(12:55):
make sure our attention to detail is high. We've got
to make post entry passes very difficult. Now I'm mean
we've got to guard to three point home.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
The Indiana Fever will tip off game number one tomorrow
at three pm. Game two will be at Gamebridge Fieldhouse
Tuesday at seven thirty, with a game three if necessary,
will be to be determined in terms of time and date.
So the Fever looking to make some noise in the
PLAYFS for the first time and about ten years. Been
about ten years since the last one a playoff game.
The Indianapolis Colts they're in action tomorrow as well, but

(13:24):
an hour after tip off for the Indiana Fever. They
play at four to five back in Lucas Oil. They
began the season with both games on home turf. Will
take on the one and oh Denver Broncos, looking to
avenge last season's loss in Denver, where they fell short
after JT dropped the ball the goal line of some
bad flashbacks there for Colts fans, but they look to
move to two and oh for the first time and

(13:44):
quite some time tomorrow at the take on the Denver
Broncos at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
Welcome back everyone. This is Indiana Sports brought to you
by Indiana Donor Network. Glad you could join us tonight.
Here's what we have planned. We're going to talk with
Matt Taylor coming up in the next hour Colts as
you know at home. Hope you got tickets, Hope you

(14:10):
have a chance to go down and watch some great
football taking on the Denver Broncos. Also next hour, Scott
Angus from the Fieldhouse Files will join me and we
will talk about the Fever and their matchup with Atlanta
coming up tomorrow afternoon. Also later on tonight, Brendan King
will join me, the voice of the South Bend Cubs.

(14:31):
They've wrapped up their season, so we'll take a look back.
He's a big Notre Dame fans. We're going to talk
with him as we normally do on Saturday nights. We'll
spend time with Paul Condrey from the Regional Radio Sports
Network recapping week number four of the high school football
season and then looking ahead obviously to the big matchups

(14:54):
around the state on Friday. So let that sink in
for once. And we're finished with week four. Uh, and
so there are nine weeks in the regular season of
high school football. I'll let you do the math. And
so I just know that the pairing show is coming

(15:16):
up before we know it, and I'll be Paul Condry
and I will be back for I don't know how
many whatever year this is. He's the one, He's the
one that count. I just know I've done it for
a long time. How's that. I know I've done the
show for a long time. I've done the pairing shows
for a long time and proud to be asked, honored

(15:37):
to be asked to do it. And it's an honor
to work with Paul and talk about football. So we're
going to take a look back at you know, just
thinking back and last night doing the show. There my
one of my thoughts throughout the night was scoring a
lot of points. Paul and I'll talk about that. There
were a lot of a whole lot of points scored
last night. And you know, you can leave all of

(16:00):
us to speculate as to why that is and whether
that's going to continue. We don't know, but so we're
going to spend some time with talking about high school football.
We're talking about some ball state football ball state. So
jase ball state with a win, right, they went today?

Speaker 3 (16:16):
That is correct.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
That took on FCS New Hampshire and they did indeed
get the win there. That was thirty four to twenty
nine in the final.

Speaker 1 (16:24):
Good. Good, So do other You have other scores in
front of him? Right? So you know Indiana State you
played last night, so we got that Texas A and
M Notre Dame playing right now. It's still halftime, correct, Correct?
The Purdue Southern Cow matchup thirty seventeen, is that still
the score?

Speaker 3 (16:44):
It is?

Speaker 2 (16:45):
But US is knocking on the door third and goal,
only two minutes left, so Purdue Kinnie's a long shot
here to make a comeback.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
So it's there in the fourth. So this game is almost.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Over, almost over, and USC leads by thirteen and af
third and goal.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
This would have to be the classic Hail Mary. Quite
frankly Butler handover when went to to the dogs, right.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Yes, Butler won that one sixteen to seven overhand over.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
Today, sixteen to seven overhandover. Unfortunately, my alma mater Franklin
College losing to Hope College. Correct, I don't have that
one in front of me. Well, I Hope, Yeah, they
did lose that. Hope nationally ranked made it to the
playoffs a year ago. Really a really good football team.

(17:33):
Grizzlies got out in the opening possession as they did
last weekend ran a little trick play, got a touchdown,
long touchdown, and then Hope made the great comeback and
we're able to put that one away. You Indy, you
got a U indie score, I do.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
I was actually on the call today for und TV.
They get to win thirty three to twenty six over
number twenty Ashland. So they bounced back from a ranked
loss last week and get a ranked win this week.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
So you were on the call, and was that a
secret You weren't going to share that with me, that
you were on the call of this game.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
And actually I was actually getting ready to there as
you were sharing about your own water, about to say,
you know, coaches on the call today of you Indy
football and they got the win, all.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
Right, So tell me how they do this.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Yeah, So thirty three twenty six the final score. They
add on seven points on the last play of the
game after Ashland's laterals go by the wayside.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
You.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Indy was down twenty six to fourteen late in the
ball game, they score, They get the ball back on
an outrageous interception by Alvin contrail He was already he
was laying on the ground. The bass and how magically
appeared in his arms.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Hang on one second, Hang on one second. Chris Kievers
joins me, the head coach at the University of Indianapolis. Coach,
we're just talking about your team thirty three twenty six
winners over Ashland. Congratulations on the win. Thanks for the call.

Speaker 5 (18:54):
Thank you very much. We're very proud of our guys.
We were down twelve and the fourth and scored nineteen
un answered. That's pretty special against the number twentieth ranked
team in the country.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
So, uh, you can't do that without doing it on
both sides. You got to get the ball and then
you got to be a fishing offensively. That must have
been a wild fourth quarter.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
Yeah that Alvin Contreras. He had a pick, two fumble recoveries,
and two touchdowns. Yikes's he's starting outside linebacker. He had
a hell of a day.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
Say that again. He had two touchdowns, but two interceptcoveries. Yeah, fuck,
two fumble recoveries and.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
An interception interception. You have two touchdowns, two fumble recoveries
and an interception.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
In the span of what a quarter, No.

Speaker 5 (19:37):
No, and and in the ball at the end of
the at the end of the game though, he made
the pick to stop a drive and then they would
He's a kid from Ben Davis, right, And we went down,
We went down and scored and took and took the
lead twenty six, twenty seven. And then in the final
play of the game they're playing in the lateral game,
he makes he falls on the fumble and to get

(19:58):
a touchdown. Second touchdown the day he scooped and scored
a fumble recovery in the second quarter and went forty
eight yards for a touchdown.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
Man, that's tremendous. All right, So who are you playing
next week?

Speaker 5 (20:11):
But Kendree homecoming it's and they've they've been a problem
for us. They're a good football team and there in
our league. And you know, we beat him last year,
but it came down to the last play. And two
years ago we were nine to zero in the rank,
seventh in the Coast and they beat us. So so
you know, we're we're we're it's gonna be a big
game for us to play.

Speaker 1 (20:31):
Them, all right, So congratulations, that's that's fantastic, contraras. What
more do you ask a kid to do? I mean,
what what a huge lift he gave you today.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
Yeah, he had a really big game. It's funny he played.
We started will linebacker last two games, our nickel goes
down and we moved them back.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
We moved him to.

Speaker 5 (20:52):
Nickel and he had had the best game he's ever played.
He's he's a sophomore. He's a good player. You know,
we knew we recruited him out have Ben Davis.

Speaker 1 (20:59):
He was right, a really good player. So you Indy
today thirty three twenty six winners over Ashland. Chris Kievers,
thanks for the call, coach. I wish you the best.
I appreciate you taking time and good luck next Saturday.

Speaker 5 (21:12):
Thank you so much. Appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (21:14):
Thank you,
