Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
Talk on Bob Lovell. Coming up, we have college football,
college basketball, will recap last night in high school football,
talk about the Colts in Germany. Right now, though, we
turn it over to the star of our show. It's
Network Indiana's Landon Kuns.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Coach is a pleasure to be with you on this
Saturday night along with our producer Caleb Zuver. It has
been a wild weekend of sports. We have high school
football regionals like you mentioned, we have the Colts in Berlin,
the Pacers going on right now, along with Notre Dame,
and a full week of NCAA football and basketball. Let's
get right into the college football conversation. As of right now,
(00:43):
Notre Dame leading Navy twenty eight to ten with twelve
six remaining in the third quarter. An incredible touchdown just
a few moments ago from Jeremiah Love never touched the ground,
rolled over a couple of Navy defenders and was able
to run it in for six. Right now, the Indiana
Pacers trail early. I guess the Denver Nuggets nineteen to
(01:04):
sixteen with two point fifty eight remaining in this first quarter.
And then how about this. The Indiana Hoosier is the
number two ranked team in the nation get a massive
win against the Penn State Nitney Lions by a final
score of twenty seven to twenty four. Fernando Mendoza going
nineteen for thirty on the day with one touchdown, one interception,
and one of the most impressive touchdowns you will ever
(01:27):
see this season in the college football to Omar Cooper
junior tippy toes his way in to the farest possible
part of the end zone. We'll get into more scores
along with the night from football and basketball and other
sports for newber Indiana Sports. I'm made a Coons.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Lovel. This is Indiana Sports Talk.
Let's get started. As you heard note your Dame leading
in halftime over Navy. Doctor Lynn Clark is live on
scene four. Dr Clark Irish shift surged ahead. Not a
(02:04):
bad and half for them or here we are in
the third quarter at least, but not a bad first
half for them.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
I'm losing my voice here, Bob, but not a bad
first half. And Jeremiah Love with a forty eight yard
touchdown rush to start the third quarter, Notre Dame leads
twenty eight to ten, but CJ. Cark continues to impress
eleven or fourteen pass and one hundred and eight yards
two touchdowns. Jeremiah loved two touchdowns as well as starring
Price with a touchdown. But defensively, Notre Dame has contained
(02:33):
a Navy triple option for the most part. But quarterback
Braxton Woodson, who got to start over the injured quarterback
Blake Corvat, has been very effective, rushing for one hundred
eight yards in the touchdown, including the forty eight I
should say a forty one yard burst. They'd kept the
midshipment alive in the ball game. But the keys in
the second half is Notre Dame a stay disciplined against
the option, finished drives and protect the football. But right
(02:55):
now they're starting to break away, leading twenty eight to ten.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
I think the second halfs get the ball in the
hands of Jordan Love.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yes, he's been very It looks like he was going
to be taken down for maybe a couple of yard
game and then he just broke out of the pack
and rushed forty eight yards to the end zone for
the touchdown. But you play into the whistle. But that's
what makes this game, this level between Navy and Notre
Dame so great is that it's a very physical contest.
And as I told some people earlier, is that you're
not going to out athlete Navy. You have to out
(03:27):
execute him. And right not right now, Notre Dame is
doing that, out executing Navy. In the third quarter.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
They just continue offensively to be able to run the ball.
And you love CJ. Carr and how he's maturing and
developing his game. They've they've made great strives in the
offensive end of the of the field.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yes, they've really done a nice job. But I tell
you the one intangible it's been the time of possession.
You know, right now, just looking at the time of possession,
Navy's had the ball three minutes more than Notre Dame.
But that really makes a difference. It's like having another
defender out there. But Notre Dame needs to get more
separation right now, twenty eight ten Notre Dame fans would
like to see them going by a couple of other scores.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Go grab some hot honey and tea. Take care of
that valuable voice, Okay.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Bob, Notre Dame just scored on a long patch by CJ. Carr.
So we just talked about Notre Dame getting separation as
they could go up by a score thirty five to
ten if they get the pat But we'll talk to
you after the game.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Yeah, I'll look forward to it. Keep the ball in
the hands of CJ. Carr if you're not giving it
to Jordan Love. Thanks Lynn, take care of yourself.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Bye.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Notre Dame thirty five ten stuck some college football too,
Indiana State. Tough day for them. It was the Battle
of the States. Illinois State beats Indiana State fifty to twenty.
With me from the Sycamore Network our good friend Brian Jennings. Brian,
thanks to the call. This is a tough one, tough loss.
Good but you know, a game you know you think
(05:01):
going in you feel good about and defensively just not
able to slow down this Illinois State group.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Yeah, you know, especially after coming off the upset win
last week over South Dakota State Indiana State. Illinois State
was tied at seven at the end of the first quarter,
but second quarter of the Redbirds outscored the Sycamores twenty
eight to seven, then to go up thirty five to
fourteen at the break, and coach, it just came down
to the ability for Illinois State to just keep the possession,
you know, keep the clock moving. They had the ball
(05:29):
for almost forty five minutes of action, but he came in.
Indiana State just could not you know, get the ball
back and sustain any kind.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Of a drive.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Indiana State on the afternoon, you know, two hundred and
seventy two yards of total offense, Illinois State five hundred
and fifty five yards at total offense. And you know,
if you can't, if you're struggle and stop in the
run the Missouri Valley Football Conference, that's going to be
a problem today. Indiana State held the sixty eight yards rushing,
Illinois State had two hundred and forty one yards on
the ground.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
Yeah, that's a simple stat to decipher and understand what's
going on in the ballgame. And yeah, as you point out,
you get the big win last week, and it's disappointing
to lose no matter what. But after the big win,
you're thinking, okay, maybe some momentum, and Illinois State took
it away from them, as you talked about, by controlling
the ground.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Yeah, you know, they're very balanced. They're probably the most
balanced offensive attack in the Missouri Valley Conference. You know,
when you think of the top of the conference, you
think South Dakota State, South Dakota, North Dakota State, North Dakota,
and they.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
All run the ball.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
You know, they're about running the ball down your throat.
But this Illinois State club, you know, Timmy ritten outs,
our quarterback today, was twenty nine to thirty four on
the day for you know, throwing the football, so you
know for two hundred and fifty yards I'm sorry for
three hundred and fourteen yards. So I mean, you know,
they're balanced. Three fourteen in the air, two fifty on
the ground. That's that keeps you honest defensively, and the
(06:48):
Sycamores new coming in. It was going to be that
kind of an attack and a balanced attack. And one
of the keys for Indiana State was to be able
to sustain your eyes and you know, you know, convert
on third down. I su was only four of eleven
ounts down in the Illinois State was ten or fifteen
on the afternoon.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
All right, I want you to hang on here through
this short break. If you can do that, absolutely, coach,
all right, I'll be glad. So we're gonna come back
and talk more Indiana State football with Brian Jennings. Tough
loss today to Illinois State fifty two to twenty. Will
come back after this short break and talk more football
on Indiana Sports Talk. Welcome back everyone. Before the break,
(07:29):
we were talking with Brian Jennings from the Indiana State
Sports Network ISU losing to Illinois State today fifty two
to twenty the final in this ball game, and you know, Brian,
we were talking about not being able to get some
things going on the ground, to control the ground, and
(07:49):
it's disappointing. It's it's tough. The Valley football conferences, extremely
difficult and forgiving quite frankly, and I know it's a
a disappointing day for everyone. But give me some positives,
give me some things we can take and that group
can take and take forward and heading into next weekend's matchup.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Well.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
Rachard Rochelle, the red shirt senior out of Jacksonville, Illinois,
six catches one hundred and three yards in the score
scored on a sixty four yard pass from Keegan Patterson. Patterson,
as we said, was sixteen to twenty six for two
old fronts, the redshirt freshman out of Greenwood. So I
mean there's some play, you know, some positives there, but
you know, at the end of the day, it's still
about the running game. And you know, ISU on the
(08:31):
afternoon had what nine receivers catch passes on the afternoon,
As I said, Rochelle had six catches for one oh
three to Shawn Singleton six for fifty one. The passing
game has been solid for Indiana State. It's just you've
got to be able to get something going on the
ground and that's where the problems live. But you know,
again as I said before, and I said, you know,
(08:51):
week in and week out, and I was talking with
my partner today, Tom James. In the nf state schedule,
you know, you played that Missouri Valley Conference, You've got
what sixteams ranked from the top twenty five, You play
Montana number four in the nation and FCF and then
you play IU number two in the nation FBF. Right,
that's it's as good as anybody around. But at the
end of the day, coach, you know, it's about the wins.
And right now in Dan with a struggle struggling just
(09:13):
a bit.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Indiana State losing to Illinois State today fifty to twenty,
taking on Youngstown State next week. Brian Jennings, great to
talk to you as always. Thanks so much for the.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Call anytime, coach.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Have good evening you too. I you in one of
the most dramatic wins I think anybody's ever seen. They
win twenty seven twenty four over Penn State with me
from the IU Sports Network, John Harrick and John, I
loved your text. I mean, you sending me a text
and go I'm gonna try to call you, but I'm
(09:46):
not sure I'm gonna be able to talk. I'm too
excited to talk about the game for having sex. I
don't know how you described this, John, I know you
guys did a great job of it, but I don't.
I mean, I just I'm still trying to believe what
I watched.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
Yeah, Bob, it was just a gritty win by a
football team that never you know, is short on finding
ways to win. And that's what ten and O looks like.
And a lot of guys. You know, this team's getting
a little banged up. I mean they're left guard Drew
Evanson Elijah Surratt was out, and despite those injuries, they
found a way to make some big plays when it
mattered most. And it again when you thought they might fold.
(10:26):
You know, is in a game like this when they
were down twenty four to twenty. Similarly, when Fernando through
the interception for the touchdown against Oregon, he thought that
might be a moment where they could fall apart here
and both times they never did. They found a way
to bounce back and win every time. Same thing in Iowa.
That was a tough game too, so and Oregon got
to learn how tough the place Iowa is to play today.
(10:48):
They got it out a tough win there. So this
this football team finds really incredible ways to win games
even when it seems like it might not happen.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
You know, they do and people say, well, how are
they able to do that? I think it goes back
to it. It starts with coaching, uh and the mindset
of the coaches. It's transmitted to the players that you
do things the right way every time. You know, you
don't take shortcuts. You're disciplined to doing things the right way,
(11:20):
which pays off in crucial times like when you have
to catch passes and put a foot down and get
it inside the line. And somehow, some way being able
to make those kinds of plays, you develop a toughness,
You develop and inate ability to make the plays you
have to make because that's how you've been taught.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
Yeah, and it's something you have to keep reinforcing on
the sidelines. And that's not just what coach Kurt Signetty does,
That's what his entire coaching staff does. And make sure
guys understand that you need to find a way even
when things seem tough. I know, Aiden Fisher, the middle
linebacker went proper to Fernanda Mendoza and said, you got this.
You can get this too, a drill, you can.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Do that, all right.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
So hey, John, I need you to hang on, hang
on here through the school board update. Okay, no problem,
all right, here we go. We'll come back with John
Herrick after the school board update. Talk more IU football
on Indiana Sports Stuff.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Lady Cooons here with you for Network Indiana Sports scoreboard update.
Devin Nuggets leading the Indiana Pacers thirty seven to twenty three,
nine to fifteen remaining in the second quarter. In college football,
Notre Dame continues to lead Navy thirty five to ten
with eight thirty remaining in the third quarter. Now we
have just been talking to John Herrick from the IU game.
(12:39):
Are you getting a massive twenty seven to twenty four
win over Penn State. Here's how it's out from Don
Fisher on the IU Radio network.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
Two more chances here forty one seconds to.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Go, DJ and Omar both bar side Becker near side.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Mendoza in the backfield back to throw.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Pressure comes again, throws it to.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
The end of he catches, Babe.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Is that a touchdown? Touchdown? Undelievable?
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Hold Lork too perple the brown.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
And he put his foot down. It's a store for
theanna Omar Cooper Junior playing tippy toe to get that
last second touchdown. Alija Sarrett did not play during the game.
He was out with the Hampshire, but Fernando Mendoza went
nineteen for thirty on the day, one touchdown, one interception,
and then just fun. Here was Gus Johnson on the
Fox broadcast. Dondza jumping up, give him the Heisman trophy?
(13:46):
Is correct, Gus Johnson, I you again massive win today
twenty seven to twenty four over Penn State. And then
we will have more scores throughout that including a preview
from Colts in Berlin against the Atlanta Falcons tomorrow for
Never Can You Sports All Many Coons.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Welcome back everyone. We're talking with John Herrick from the
IU Sports Network after i u's thrilling twenty seven to
twenty four win over Pinch Steak, John, had you heard
Don's call or I'm sure that's not the first time
you've heard Don's call of the the game winning touchdown?
Speaker 5 (14:21):
Well, you know, it's funny you say that, Bob, because
the great thing is I sit next to them, so
I right right. I got to see every part of
him get that excited.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
That was great.
Speaker 5 (14:30):
He's also exhausted because he's got to call a basketball
game tomorrow because we play Marquette in Chicago. The men's
basketball team does so he's he's probably I think he's
probably already in Chicago by now. But yeah, that was
just a phenomenal call. He stayed incredibly poised all the
way through the very end. And yeah, yeah, I was like,
I was like, I'm thinking to myself when I'm watching
(14:52):
these officials review it, I'm like, you better not got touchdown.
A brilliant call. Don Fisher just had so h Luckily
they reviewed it and that was just you know, and Bob,
you remember when Omar Cooper was in high school at
Lawrence North Sure taking insane plays like this, and he
could have transferred, Bob, he could have left Indiana at
(15:14):
any point. He went through the Tom Allen years. He
was in front of a lot of losing seasons, and
then he decides to stick it out. He stays here.
Signetti convinces him to stay, and thank goodness he did,
because not only has it worked out for both of them,
but he's also gotten to learn from a great wide
receiver alongside of him, and Elijah Surat, who showed great
leadership even though he wasn't playing in today's game. Elijah
(15:37):
was over there lifting guys up, saying, hey, keep your
heads up, it's all right, one play to time, one
drive at a time, and they were able to do
that until the very end.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
You mentioned earlier, the guys are dinged up and having
a Surrat that was that's a big, big loss. I
think everybody understands it, and to Cooper's credit, he steps
up and helps fill that void. Plus yeah, I think
maybe a newfound favorite in another pie, Charlie Becklet where's
(16:09):
this kid? He was fantastic. I mean, he's talking about
stepping up when they needed you. He was the poster
child for that.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
Yeah, I mean he so he's had a chance, Bob.
He's a sophomore out of Nashville, Tennessee. Every now and
then he's made these really impressive catches when he's come in,
like kind of when the game's not quite in hand
yet or it's right, the game's not quite over, but
the result you know what it's going to be. And
he's made some really impressive catches. But these last two weeks,
but Sarrat being hurt, you get to see how explosive
(16:38):
he really truly can be. And when he had that,
you know, those catches today in the first quarter and
in the fourth quarter where he had to make incredible
you know, it looks like he had to adjust every
part of his back to reach back to make those
catches both times. And for him to have the day
that he had, that's that's a great thing about the
program that Signetti is building. Because he's building death. It's
(17:00):
not just about the stars and the number ones. It's
also about the twos, threes and fours, and the fact
that he's been able to get a lot of these
guys keep playing. Time is paying dividends for guys like
Charlie Becker, And when Charlie had an opportunity today, he
stepped up.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
He he most certainly stepped up. There's no question at all.
And I'm not sure you have enough superlatives for the
overall play of Fernando Mendoza. He just you talk about
a guy in the middle of it and make him
play after play, big play after big play under the
most crucial circumstances you could find.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know if he'll win the Heisman.
He's certainly a candidate for it, a very strong brindit
for it, because there's still a lot of football left
to be played. But here's the thing. You watch again,
you have to watch the game like that and not
just go off the stats, because you have to really so.
I was there and saw it live. I saw how
he had to overcome his interception. I saw how he
(17:57):
had to get sacked a few times but get right
back up and makes big plays. That's the kind of
grittiness and toughness you want if you're an NFL team
wanting to find the tough noose quarterback to play on Sunday.
So I know a lot of New York Jets fans
are looking forward to that. But that's what I'm saying, Like,
(18:17):
you know, I mean, that's what you want though. If
you're an NFL scout, you're going Man, this guy, even
in the toughest moments, gets right back up, leaves this team,
and then in the postgame interviews never makes it about him.
He's over there talking about how much fun it is
to play on this team and have all the weapons
he has. You know, reminds me a lot of a
lot of the way Kurt Warner did that when Kurt
Warner had the greatest show on tour. Right, the fact
(18:39):
that Fernando does that shows you what a good quarterback
he is.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
Well, man, oh man, I'm not sure my heart can
take that. I'll tell you how how big a dealer was. No,
I'm telling how big a deal of was. My wife,
who is a you know, she's a basketball coach's wife, tolerates,
tolerated basketball, tolerances football. She sat there with me and
watched the end of it, and she was she was
yelling at the TV when they wanted that seriously, she was,
(19:10):
she was, she was all in and how could you
know under the circumstances, how could you not be all
in with a group of guys like that. And so
you know, the the idea now is you're one step closer. Uh,
it doesn't get any easier for you. You got a Wisconsin
tem I think a dangerous Wisconsin team coming in. You
just uh, they're desperate for when and when you're desperate,
(19:32):
you do those kinds of things. And so uh, hopefully
get some people healthy and continue to roll in this unbelievably,
unbelievably incredibly successful season they're having.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
Yeah, and that's exactly it, Bob. And long after we
landed the plane land and tonight, I checked my phone
and I saw that Wisconsin had beaten Washington. So there's
no question that that Kurt Signette is going to use that.
I guarantee you when he has a weekly press conference
before this game, he's going to talk about how Wisconsin
is a team coming in playing with confidence because they
just beat a ranked team. So that is going to
(20:09):
just con further instill you know, and don't get complacent,
never too high, never too low, and smart discipline, poise,
all that stuff that Kurt Signetti has said before he
will continue to preach it because Wisconsin has given him
even more of a reason to preach it. So these
guys approach the game the right way, and it's evident
each time out. I can't believe that we're talking about
(20:30):
an Indiana football team that has road wins at Oregon,
at Iowa, and at Penn State. Right fifty three point
win over Illinois too. I mean, it's we are living
in just incredible times with this Indiana. Who's your football team?
And this program deserves it, and I hope people are
enjoying it.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
I got a minute here, so we got basketball Hoo's
yours taking on Marquette tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (20:57):
Yep. I'm really excited, Bob. I think Mark that's a
solid team. They look like they're tall and leanky and
they can shoot it. Their length could be a problem,
but you know what, I think Indiana's got the right
man at the helm and Darren Degrees, who just had
the largest margin of victory ever for a first year
head coach at Iu and his team's ninety eight to
fifty one win over Alabama A and M. So he's
(21:18):
already off to a fantastic start. This will be a
very intriguing game tomorrow and I can't wait to see it.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
He's John Herrick from the IU Sports Network, who's yours
win A thriller playing some basketball tomorrow, John, Thanks, have
a great data, have a great day tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (21:37):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Thank you.
