To kick off a Saturday edition of Indiana Sports Talk, a show staple, Dr. Len Clark of Irish 101 calls into the show live from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to recap Notre Dames ranked win over the Pitt Panthers. Then, Greg Rakestraw of the ISC Sports Network joins to recap the historic Monon Bell game between Wabash and DePauw. Stifling the run was the key in this game and has been the key all season for DePauw. Greg explains how the Tigers shut down the Little Giants’ run game. How will today’s result affect the NCAA Division III tournament selection show tomorrow? To round out the hour, David Eha of the Ball State radio network comments on the Cardinals’ 68-62 loss to Arkansas Little-Rock. While it’s still early in the season, Eha comments on how Ball State can improve.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
Talk on Bob Lovell and is brought to you by
Indiana Donor Network. Coming up, football and more football, lots
and lots of football. Squeeze some basketball into talking about
the Pacers right now, though, we turn it over to
the star of the show. He's back two nights in

(00:20):
a row. What lucky people we are. It's Network Indiana's
Brendan King coach.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
What's going on? Great to be with you and Caleb
and all. Sweeten the deal even more. I'm weak here
through every night through Thanksgiving. How about that one? So
looking forward to hanging with you through the rest of
the month of November. All right, let's get right to it.
A lot of football to talk about, including the undefeated
Indiana Hoosiers who contended a roll number two IU stops

(00:47):
Wisconsin thirty one to seven. Fernando Mendoza four touchdown passes
two hundred and ninety nine yards and for a second
straight week, IU wins without their top receiving threat, Elijah Surratt.
Charlie Becker really stepped up for second straight week big
game at Penn State last weekend. Five catches one hundred
and eight yards and a touchdown tonight for Becker, the

(01:07):
sophomore wide receiver. So I you in good territory. Same
could be said for the Notre Dame fighting Irish, who
just continue to climb those college football playoff ranks. At
number nine entering today the Irish rollover Pittsburgh thirty seven
to fifteen. Notre Dame is eight and two heading into
their last couple games on the season against Syracuse next

(01:27):
week and then at Stanford. Not as positive for ball
State they drop it against Eastern Michigan twenty four to nine.
Will also talk about the mona on Bell De Paul
beats Wabash forty one to twenty, that and more in
a busy night on IST.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Welcome back, everybody. Let's get right to it. Notre Dame
as you heard, thirty seven to fifteen winners over pitt
with me Irish one to one. Incredibly popular author, author
of a new book called Vision, Values and Victories, Notre
Dame style leader, the one and only Lynn Clark, PhD

(02:04):
and friend of the show. Hello Lynn, Thanks Bob for
the plug.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
I really appreciate you.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
You're welcome.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
The most complete defensive effort we've seen all season long
by the fire Bob. How about this headline stat, it's
unbelievable Pitt oh of thirteen on third down zero Notre
Dame flat out refused to let them extend drives. The
other dominant staff stat Notre Dame with the ball thirty

(02:31):
five minutes. That's nearly a quarter longer than the pitt Panthers.
They dominated here today in Pittsburgh.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Yeah, you know what a as Brendan pointed out, you
just get this sense momentumous building with this group.

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Well, it was a great victory. There were still a
couple of hiccups. Notre Dame failed to score in the
red zone. That's something that they need to clean up,
a couple of penalise and then CJ. Carr with a
couple of interceptions, one went for a pick six. But
it was a victor that Marcus Freeman's as, we'll celebrate tonight,
but we've got two games left. We'll get back to work,
we get back to campus.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Pitt comes in seven and two. Pits a decent football
team and to be dismantled like they were today is
clearly a credit to the Irish.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Well PETNARDUZI a defensive minded coach. They really thought they
had a game plan to come in and shut down CJ.

Speaker 4 (03:22):
Carr and Jeremiah Love.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
But the Irish were just too deep. CJ. Car two
hundred and twelve yards, two touchdowns, both going to Malachi Brown.
So I kind of liked that chemistry between those two individuals.
And then Jeremiah Love with just another yeoman's day at
the office, one hundred and forty seven yards in the score.
He also broke a big run for fifty six yards,
and so Notre Dame did it in the air, they

(03:44):
also did it on the ground. But the defense continues, Bob.
They're like a boy constructed that Titans tighter and tighter
getting late into the game.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Okay, all right, well we know they can. They have
dominated people on the ground this year, been very consistent
in that. It's great to see the defensive effort, especially
this afternoon.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
Oh yes, four sacks and seven tackles for loss and
Pitt had a very good quarterback. If if he was
not as mobile as he was, that status would have
increased with the number of stats, sacks and tackles for losses.
But it was a good win. It was a win
on the road. We've talked about how difficult it is
to win, especially on the road. That's a confidence builder.

(04:27):
Notre Dame goes back home for the final home game
of the year's Senior Day against Syrahcuse. That's a game
they should take care of. And then they head out
west to play Stanford over the Thanksgiving break, and then
we'll find out if Notre Dame can control their own destiny.
We'll find out where they will end up. Right now,
Number nine is Brenda King said in the leading to
the show. We'll see what happens in this crazy world

(04:49):
of college football.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
He's doctor Lynn Clark. Great job as always, Notre Dame
thirty seven to fifteen winners over Pitt Winn. Thanks so much.
Have a great week, Bob.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Notre Dame in Ohio State to undefeated teams in basketball
tomorrow afternoon.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
I'll be there, outstanding, Thanks so much. Coming up more football.
Greg Rakestraw from the ISC Sports Network the best at
what he does. That's why he was asked to do
the one and thirty first Monon Bell game Today won
by Walbash forty one to twenty Walbash beating DePaul again

(05:28):
forty one twenty, Greg rag Straw, glad you're with us,
Very very good win for the little giants today.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
Flip that De Paul won that game forty one to twenty.
So de Paul win. Sorry, fourth concutive year.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
All righty are my eyes this bad? De Paul wins? No? No,
now I'm looking right at it. And De Paul wins
forty one forty one twenty good the Lord Death, how embarrassed?
A very impressive win. Now you know what? These are
two ranked teams, and it is rankings. Notwithstanding they played

(06:05):
this game for one hundred and thirty one years, and
as we talked about last night on the show, the
difference of margin after all those years is eight and
eight games, nine games, something like that. So when you
get something like this, you have to be impressed with
with what De Paul was able to do, was able

(06:26):
to correct.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
And if Paul winning is not a huge surprise, even
though I thought these two teams are pretty even going
into it. It was the margin of victory. Watersh scored
in their opening drive, took the ball seventy eight yards
down the field. The next thirty four points belonged to
DePaul in true Wahbash fashion, they kept battling and had

(06:48):
a couple of possessions when he could have made it
a two score game, kind of early in the fourth quarter,
but again DePaul was simply too much for the the day.
Scott Ballantine quarterback sophomore younger brother star receiver Robbie Ballentine
had four touchdown passes today, including one to his brother
late to seel a fourth consecutive Monon Bell victory.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
I need you to hang on through this short break?
Can you do that?

Speaker 4 (07:15):
Why do you think I shortened the summary at nine thirty,
except Bob, I think that'd.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Because you're because you're a pro, and you know that
you know the clock better than I do. Other than that,
I don't have any idea we'll be back. Welcome back.
Monon Bell stays in Crawford Zille. Excuse me, stays in
Crawford Thill. That's correct. DePaul beats Walbash forty one, stays

(07:43):
in Greencastle, pardon me, and a good solid win for
the to Paul Tiger's forty one twenty great Rags draw
back with us. He had the game, all right, this
this really is a pretty solid Paul football team, is
it not?

Speaker 4 (08:00):
Correct? And again, you know they lose quarterback Nathan McKay
hill after last year, after a great year to Paul,
you bring in Scott Valentine, pretty young along the offensive line,
ran the ball in solid fashion with Caden Whitehead and
Carson Johnson. Today again, Robbie Valentine is one of the
best receivers currently in Division III, one of the best
receivers into Paul history. And frankly is one of sixteen

(08:24):
finalists for the Campbell Trophy, which is the academic heisman
which gets awarded coming up in mid December. And he
has earned himself at least eighteen thousand dollars in postgraduate
scholarships wollow, which because he's going to dental school when
he has done with undergrad at university. Well, what has

(08:46):
clearly translated over from last year is what they do defensively.
And again let me throw out the stat caveat sackyards
count on your rushing totals in high school and college football,
come against your passing totals in the National Football League.
But the point is still well. Coming into today's game, Bob,

(09:07):
the Paul had allowed ninety one yards rushing on the season. Okay,
that's not allowing ninety one yards per game. That's not
allowing a back to run for ninety one yards. That
is a elaborative effort ninety one yards rushing. And I
know at one point in time I don't have the
box score in front of me. The total yards rushing

(09:27):
for the day for Wabash was somewhere around thirty three
yards for the game. That was after they ran the
ball somewhat well on the opening drive of the game
to go seventy eight yards and score. There was a
three play series late in the game where Wabash was
trying to you know, get the ball in and score,

(09:48):
make it a two score game, and Bob, they threw
the ball on second and one, third and one and
fourth and one, and I felt compelled to go focus
the reminder, here's the pause rushing stats is so walba
fad about play calling. That's the reason you try to
throw the ball on second and one, third, one and
fourth and one, because the paw is that's thinking good defensively.

(10:08):
So those skill sets all travel as law locally, not officially,
but likely is on the Division three playoffs either next
weekend or the week after.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
I'm just visualizing people around the state driving on a Highway.
Hearing you go that they've only given up thirty yards rushing,
all right, whatever that stat is, and excuse me, And
people are thinking, you know, a ring star is pretty good.
What is he talking about? He's lost his mind talking

(10:41):
about that number. And that's how that's how unbelievable it
is so correct.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
And they had six stacts today, did the Paw. But
they're simply a team. You're not gonna line up and
run the football against the guys up front. It's a
it's a really unique mix. A lot of seniors, a
couple of being Zionsbook kids looking on and Owen Roselle,
Joey Rowland outside lineback from Greenfield Central he is a senior.
Dominic Siebel from Cathedral, he is a senior. But there

(11:08):
is also this group of kids off of Ben Davis's
state championship team a couple of years ago, Neamiah Doll, Tarik,
Gimo O Yashigi. Those guys basically are the front seven
and you're not running on them cats. They are really good.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
And so if you're gonna have success against the Paul,
you're liking to do it in the air that that's
gonna be your best chance to beat them if you
run across them in the Division three playoffs.

Speaker 1 (11:38):
Greg rag Shore, you got time to go through the
scoreboard update or yeah, yeah, you have to go.

Speaker 4 (11:44):
That's perfectly fine.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
All right, I'm glad because I want to I want
to go back and talk about, you know, the playoffs,
and they'll find out. I think what they find out
tomorrow is that the deal.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
Correct and again no one you're up against. The time
wise forty teams make the Declusion three postseason one O
seven automatic qualifiers. They are likely one of thirteen.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Okay, Greig great Strawan, I'll come back after Brendan King
schoolboard update on Indiana sports.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Tug Fellas, thank you, just going final over at Gamebridge
field House a few moments ago. The Toronto Raptors defeat
the Indiana Pacers tonight, a final one and twenty nine
to one hundred eleven that drops the Pacers record now
to one in twelve. Their lone win did come inside
Gamebridge field House. Now no shortage of success from the

(12:36):
stars tonight for Indiana. Pascal Siakam had thirty points Andrew
Nemhard with twenty two with the bench failed to replicate
those statistics in Toronto was really really good.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
RJ.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Barrett with a good night at twenty two points. Scottie
Barnes added fourteen, brandon Ingram with nineteen. So Indiana loses
again their record one and twelve. Also not going well
for the Purdue boiler Makers out west in Washington, forty
two to three the scores. The Huskies lead the Boilers
three minutes and twenty two seconds to go in the
third quarter. Again Washington up forty two to three. Boilers

(13:08):
still without there without a big ten victory on the season,
hoping to get it in Washington, not gonna be able
to do so, penning a massive comeback tonight, also out
west for the Butler Bulldogs. FCS ball, San Diego defeats
the Dogs twenty nine to seven, Butler making the long
trip out west. Elsewhere in FCS football, Youngstown State handled

(13:31):
Indiana State forty eight twenty nine. Sycamore's fall to three
and eight on the season. And then how about this
one in extra time, earning their first Pioneer League win
of the year. Valparaiso the Beacons in overtime edge Stetson
thirty two to thirty one. How about for the Beacons,
good for them again their first league win on the campaign.

(13:54):
They're two to nine. I'm Brendan King, Network Indiana.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Welcome back everyone on Bob level. This is Network Indiana
is Indiana Sports Talk. Greg Rigstar rejoins me he had
the Wabash to Paul Monan Bell matchup, the one hundred
and thirty first. De Paul wins this one, forty one
to twenty. All right, tomorrow everyone finds out if you
if you're Walbash and De Paul, you're anxiously awaiting the

(14:17):
Division three Football Championship Committee's decision in terms of who's
in and who's out. Correct.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
Correct, And again for Wabash, I think both teams kind
of knew whoever lost this game was not going to
make it in. You know, things have changed in the
NCAAC with the addition of John Carroll coming over from
the other Ohio based Division three league, the OAC. John
Carroll won the league beating Dennis and today they finished
unbeaten in the league play at eight to zero. They

(14:44):
have the automatic qualifier. De Paul again likely to get
the at large berth. And again this was a change
from last year from about two years ago. Last year
was the first year, having forty teams in previously only
thirty two teams made it and with twenty seven as
it will be one of the top ten teams in
the country. Basically, you know, to get at large Berth

(15:07):
now there's much more of an opportunity. However, Wa Bash
will get to play one more football game and again
this is something that happened last year and I think
this is really cool. The Heartland Conference, the OAC, the
NCAAC and the President's Athletic Conference which has kind of
Pennsylvania Ohioish schools in the Pier League as well, they
will all send their best teams to Canton to play

(15:30):
a doubleheader next Saturday. It's called the Open Doors Bowl Series. Like,
for example, in Division two there is the ball hand
that takes place in Hobert every year, right that has
a team on the GLVC and a team from GMAC. Well,
now the Division three level you kind of see this
as well. So wa Bash has accepted the birth. They
will play in that game for a second consecutive year.

(15:51):
They play a handover last year. They won't play handover
again because Hanover has qualified for the D three playoffs
out of the HCAC this season, whom they might see.
But again Wabash will play. But it's one and done.
They'll play in the ball game. The Paul had at
chance to go deeper to the playoffs. They made the
round of sixteen last year, and again I think if

(16:12):
the matchups fall in their favor, they can get that
far or even further this time around.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
He's the best at what he does. It's Greg Raigsterra
from the ISC Sports Network on the call of the
one hundred and thirty first pairing between Wabash and de Paul.
DePaul wins this one forty one twenty Greg, Thanks as always,
have a great weekend. Thanks coach, Thank you. College basketball

(16:39):
University of Arkansas Little Rock beats Ball State sixty eight
sixty two from the Ball State Network. David Eha joins me, David,
thank you for the call. Tough night for the cards
this evening.

Speaker 5 (16:51):
Yeah, it really was, Bob. First of all, can you
rich that stat that Greg just gave you on the
DePaul rushing defense.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. People driving, people are driving
all over the state thinking what he's lost his mind?
He used to be good now listening to what he's saying. No,
I mean, he's crazy.

Speaker 5 (17:10):
I mean that's really unbelievable ninety yards on the entire season.
But anyhow, I agress. Yes, Yes, tough game to night
for the Cardinals. Really just did not play all that
well at both ends of the floor. Allowed Little Rock
to shoot fifty five percent. It was only a four
point game at halftime, and the Cardinals ended up with

(17:32):
fifteen turnovers. Just could not get on track offensively the length.

Speaker 1 (17:38):
Of the U.

Speaker 5 (17:39):
The Little Rock Trojans spot they have four guys six
foot eight and over and they played a one to
three to one zone and they're low, they're trapping. Really
gave the Cardinals trouble. So, uh, not a good night
at Worthing. Cards fall to two and two on the season.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
Yeah, we've uh we've both been in those situations. Uh,
and you know you can go you walk through it,
talk about it. Hey, you know, move the ball moving quickly,
don't try to don't don't try to throw over you know, ball,
fake pass, fake all that stuff. Now it's still link.
This link is hard to play against. And you saw
it up close and personal tonight.

Speaker 5 (18:20):
Yeah, there's no question. I mean coaches, you know, they
tried to simulate it. In practice putting six guys out
there on defense, but the lengths, I mean, the Cardinals
have one player six foot eight, so it's not like
you could put you know, guys on the practice squad
out there and and try to simulate it. And it
really played havoc And you got to give a little
Rock credit. I mean, this is a team that has

(18:42):
been on the road for an entire week and they're
gonna stay on the road for another week, and you
got to give them credit. I mean, they came in
and they battled and played really hard. They're picked first
to win the OVC, and I really like the squad
that Daryl Walker put together for the Cardinals.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
It's gonna take.

Speaker 5 (19:02):
A while for this team to gel, and you better believe,
you know, the focus moving forward is going to be
on the defensive end and really taking care of the basketball.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
Well, Cards dropped to two and two, and it still
is early. I'm sure though, when the Michael's concerned about,
you know, taking care of the basketball and knocking down
some shots and defensively shoring things up, there's a lot
of time left obviously. So who's up next for the Cards?

Speaker 5 (19:34):
Yeah? So Cards have a week off, They play at
Indiana State next Saturday and then won't play again until
a MT in Easton, Pennsylvania at Lafayette University over the
Thanksgiving weekend. So a little bit of brick to get
things right, plenty of time to practice. But I'm still

(19:55):
bullish on this team. You know, not their night tonight,
the struggle to get it's the zone and the length,
But I still like the pieces. Just going to be
a matter of playing together and I'm sure he's going
to get them focused in on the defensive end, no
question about it.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
The great thing is they get to get back on
the practice floor for some solid work. You know, you
get out at first week or so, you find out
a little bit about yourself, and they found out some
things they liked and things they didn't like clearly, and
now you get a chance to work on.

Speaker 5 (20:28):
Yeah, there's no question. I mean, you know, at any
time you can just focus on yourselves and not necessarily
another opponent. That's where that's where the emphasis is.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Going to be.

Speaker 5 (20:39):
And you know, going into Indiana State, good rivalry games,
so uh, you know, if you see the interesting to
see how the Cardinals bounce back and you know, disappointing
any time you lose a home game, but still early.
And this group, like I said, I like the pieces.
I think they're going to come together and they'll be
just fine as a league season rolls around.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
David E. Hall from the Ball State Network, Ball State
losing to Alabama. Excuse me, yeah, Arkansas Little Rock sixty
eight sixty two the final, Dave, thanks so much, have
a great week, Okay you two. Coach, thanks so much.
Coming up, We've got a lot to talk about, a

(21:22):
lot of football coming up, a lot of basketball right
now though, short break and then we'll turn it over
to the man himself, Brendan King at the top of
the hour. This is Indiana Sports Talk.
