Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
Talk on Bob lovel and it's brought to you by
Indiana Donor Network. Busy Busy night. If you're downtown, you
know what I'm talking about. Great, great football and basketball
action around the state tonight right now. Though he's the
star of the show, he's a busy man. It's Network
(00:22):
Indiana's Nathaniel finch.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Hey, coach.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
A pleasure to be with you and our producer Caleb
Zuber from our downtown Indianapolis studios. I'll tell you what, coach,
You and I have not done a show together in
two months. Let me see if I remember how to
do this job. We start in the Big Ten Championship
in what is a huge weekend in Indianapolis. The number
two ranked Indiana Hoosiers score first against Ohio State, up
(00:45):
three to nothing, while the buck guys score ten straight.
Are you trying to tie it up right now? Nearing
the red zone? Fernando Mendoza sacked at the twenty five
yard line, but it's third down. To keep you updated
on that one. Midway through the second quarter. Of course,
the winner gets probably the one seed in the College
Football Playoff. We'll find out the seedings tomorrow. More on
that as we go. Also in college football, Georgia blows
(01:09):
out Alabama twenty eight to seven in the SEC Championship.
Texas Tech over byu thirty four to seven there, and
then Duke leads Virginia by seven. We'll keep up with
the college football playoff ramifications as we go. In college
basketball from Mackie Arena, the number one ranked Putty Boilermakers
fall for the first time this year eighty one to
(01:29):
fifty eight against number ten Iowa State. And then the
Hoosiers ranked as well. They go down at Gainbridge Field
House earlier this afternoon, eighty seven seventy eight against number
six Louisville.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Plenty of action for you today.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Welcome back everyone, All right, Nathaniel, I'm just listen. So
it's what's the score? Are you football?
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Ten to three right now? And it is fourth down
and four in the red zone. We'll see it looks
like they're going to kick a field goal.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Iu is take the points. They're gonna be hard to
come by, so take the points. There you go, all right,
you had a game today, right who worked?
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Ron Colly boys team started their season Collie Boys shortage
about I think one to fifty five?
Speaker 2 (02:13):
How about that?
Speaker 1 (02:15):
So tell me about this game. It's good to be
able to start this out, uh with you. You're there
having a good time. So it's a very impressive. What
was the final?
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Eighty one to fifty five? And you know, our good
friend Jimmy Cook now instead of calling Ron Colly basketball
is in the same arena as you on the radio.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Yeah, we were there today.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
That's right, absolutely for IU Indy. So I'm now the
voice of Ron Colly Boys and girls. And uh, it
was a pretty good win today for the boys team.
Jamon Warnkey in his fourth season at head coach, I
know you know his old man pretty well.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
His teams had never scored eighty points until today. And coach,
they did so without three key players because of the
football season obviously falling on the last play against Bishop
Dwanger in the state championship game. So they're gonna be
down these you know, two starters and one role player
for the next at least few days. And they were
still able to score eighty one points against a pretty
good short Reach team.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
That's good stuff. All right, we'll talk more about this
game throughout the night. Bad news for the boiler Makers. Yikes,
Come on now, now, you know, Iowash State's a good team,
no question. Lose at home in a non conference game
that doesn't happen very often often, especially eighty one point
(03:32):
fifty eight, that's not a good day at all for
the Boilers.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Like you said, Iowa State, it's a good team, number
ten in the country for a reason. They've got one
of the best offenses in the entire nation. But this
is a four point game. At halftime. The Boilers were
you know, they looked pretty good in the first half
and then they just kind of quit making shots in
the second half out scored forty six twenty seven. That's
never going to work inside of Macki Arena.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
You know it's you mentioned IU Indy, Greg Rigstraw and
I did the you in the Youngstown State game on
ESPN Plus. And throughout the game the Jags couldn't could
not knock down shots. And I remark to Greg, look,
you though, this is a relatively simple game. Uh, it's
(04:19):
a miss or make situation. If you miss shots, you'll
probably lose. If you make shots, you got a great
chance to win. And I'm not trying to be cute
or smart or anything. It's just how it is. You
got to knock down shots and those the Jags weren't
able to do it. And it sounds to me like
(04:39):
you maybe experienced a little bit of that.
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Absolutely, And like you said, when you simplify it like that,
it becomes pretty simple. But four of eighteen from beyond
the arc, the Boilers only shot forty one percent total,
and they were out rebounded or raither they only out
rebounded iowast eight by one. So when you can't shoot
that well, you really need to do better off the glass.
And it just was not the night for Purdue.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
I said it last night on the show. My concern
about them continues to be the inability to be consistent
in terms of others knocking down jump shots. And yeah,
it rears its ugly head in a game like today.
It was not a really good day for the major
college basketball programs in our state. I you Louisville, Yikes
(05:28):
in Louisville eighty seven to seventy eight winners in that one.
Did you see that at all? Di able to change?
I know you're busy. Did you get a chance to
catch any of that game I did.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
And how about this.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Louisville started the game on a sixteen to zero run,
So somebody needed to tell Darren Devrees and the Hoosers
that tip off was at two twenty two and not
too forty two. A little slow going to get that started.
I mean, the fact that they rebounded the way they
did and made it a close game is impressive. But yeah,
that's certainly when they're going to want to have back
at Gainbridge Field House in front of you know, it's
a neutral venue, but you know that's definitely a lot
(05:59):
of value fans. We're going to the Big Ten championship game. Yeah,
and it just wasn't quite the start that the Hoosiers
were hoping for. He was now lost two straight.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Not good, not good at all inability to do some
things again. You know, your non kind of for a
schedule doesn't challenge you at all. And now that you've
played two legit teams, you haven't liked the results. Bad
day for Butler and Ankle. They lose to Boise State
seventy seven sixty eight. Dogs have been off to a
(06:30):
great start at home. This is this is a little
bit of a setback for coach Mada and his guys,
you know who.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
It was a good day for How about what Notre
Dame has been able to do this game and only
the last couple, so you obviously Butler, like you said,
these major programs in Indio good, but as far as
in the state, Notre Dame with a heck of a
win today.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
Absolutely. All right, we've got short break coming up and
then we'll talk some more ball. Lots going on. I
just noticed, even though I was at IU Indy's campus today,
traffic was interesting, very interesting. Trying to get home was
(07:10):
a little bit of an adventure. All right, we're back
talking more ball. That's what we always do on Fridays
and Saturdays. This is Indiana Sports Talk. Welcome back everyone
on Bob Lovel. This is Network Indiana's Indiana's Sports Talk.
So glad you could join us. As you've heard Nathaniel
in the school board update, tough tough games around the
(07:35):
state on the basketball side, for you lost, IU lost,
Butler lost, Evans Hall lost a heartbreaker to Western Kentucky
eighty to seventy nine. That's just not a good day.
IU Indy losing to Youngstown State, a game that Greg
Rigstraw and I had on ESPN Plus. Just never really
(07:57):
able to get in into things. And so that's it. Busy,
busy night of basketball, high school basketball. Thank you so
much for the calls last night, all the coaches. We
appreciate that and it was a fun night. We're into
it now both nights. Lots of basketball to talk about. Tonight,
(08:19):
we're going to talk about the Ieu Purdue matchups and
talking about the Butler situation too, So we have plenty
to talk about. But the big key is what's going
on down at Lucas Oil Stadium. All right, Nathan, you
we have an update.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
The field goal was good ten to six buck guys
over the Hoosiers with thirty two seconds left in the
second and right now Ohio State near midfield, so they're
trying to get a field goal up in the final
few seconds.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Man, Well, you know what, as coaches, just to always
look at it. You'll just stay in the game, Halftime
will come in, we'll make the adjustments we need to make,
and then we'll go out and we'll win it in
the second half. That's that's the mentality. That's exactly what
coach Signetti said before the ball game. So you know,
(09:10):
you get you get in, you ask your kids what's good,
what's bad, what do we need to do? Give them
some responsibility and come out and redo what you're doing
and pick it up because it's uh yeah, it's one
of those duard eye situations. So that's that's good for half.
They look great on TV, uh you know, and I'm
(09:32):
so glad that they were able to get out and
make some plays, and everybody you know in the national
media going, well, you know, they can't stop them. They
can just let them play the game. Stop trying to
figure it out and let them play. Give all your credit,
you know. They they won the games on their schedule. Yeah,
(09:54):
you don't schedule games year to year in football. Everybody
understands that. So you make it. And they have no
control over the over their league. So what more would
you ask a group of people to do than to
go win the games on their schedule. And when you
do that, then you get criticized because you had a
bad schedule, which you didn't really do so well. You
(10:16):
did your non conference obviously, But there's that all right.
So now let's go back to this Ron CALLI game,
the big win for the boys this afternoon. Who did
they beat again.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Remind me, so they beat short Ridge too. Shortridge pretty
decent this year.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
I know short Ridge is not the historically great program,
but they look pretty good this year. In fact, they
have a guard who scored seventy two points through the
first two games of the season. He uh, actually he
only had about eighteen today, so slow to his standards.
But uh for the Royals, I mean, things that could
obviously score eighty one points.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
You're happy with how the offense look.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
But you've got a couple guys some career highs and
it was just a good start minus a few players
from the football season. They don't play again until next
Friday at Decatur Central, so you'll get some practices in,
you'll hopefully get a couple of those football guys in right,
and probably if they can't, just continue to build off.
But eighty one points, I mean, that's that's pretty incredible.
Like I said, the first time that a jam and
(11:12):
worn Key coach team has done that.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Plenty more games like that to come. We got about
a minute. When we come back, we're going to talk
with coach Lee Jackson from Indianapolis Metropolitan High School. They
played the Providence Chrysto Ray tonight, we'll hear about that
ball game. Also, we'll talk about the Colts gonna match
up tomorrow Lucas Oil Stadium. Quick turnaround obviously for that crew,
(11:37):
So there plenty of things to talk about, and we'll continue,
obviously to update you on the IU Ohio State Big
Ten Championship game. So busy night on the show. We're
glad you're with us. The man himself, Nathaniel Finch, coming
up with a schoolboard update next on Network Indiana's Indiana
(11:58):
Sports Talk.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
We'll Finch with you in your scoreboard update.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
We've reached halftime at Lucas Oil Stadium the Big Ten
Championship Number one Ohio state number two Indiana. Both teams
at twelve and zero, and right now the Buck Guy
is a four point lead at the break, ten to six.
The Hoosiers struck first a field goal. IU then allowed
ten straight points. They kicked the field goal near the
end of a halftime ten to six. That is our scores.
(12:23):
Take a look at some boys high school basketball scores
as we continue on this Saturday night. Anderson beats Fort
Wayne Northrop sixty seven to thirty five.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Is that final?
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Andrean over Bowman Academy seventy three seventy one, A tight
one there. How about this, Brown County wins by a
penny over South Putnam sixty to fifty nine is the
final score in that one. Concord beats or rather loses
to and Goalis seventy nine to sixty six is the
final score there. White lind over East Central seventy two
(12:56):
to sixty two, Fort Wayne Carrol sixty four, East Noble
twenty six. Eastern greenover Mitchell sixty four fifty three is
the final score there. Evansville Modern Day beats South Ridge
fifty seven to forty nine. Evansville North over Forest Park
seventy one to sixty three. These, of course, boys basketball
scores for you on this Saturday night. Belmont beats Fort
(13:19):
Wayne Canterbury sixty one to sixty A tight one there.
Franklin County falls by ten to Lawrenceburg Salem over Henryville
by three. Try West beats indian Creek seventy seven to
thirty seven, Sacina over Newcastle fifty eight to forty two,
and finally, Ron Colley beats Indianapolis short Ridge eighty one
(13:40):
to fifty five to open its season Nathaniel Finch with
you on IST.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Welcome back everyone. Let's talk some basketball tonight. Indianapolis Metropolitan
winning tonight over Providence. Christo Ray seventy to fifty one
with me Metropolitans, Lee Jackson, coach, thanks so much for
the call. Congratulations on this win tonight.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Hey, thank you. I'm glad to be here.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
I'm glad you're with me. So tell me how you're
able to do this tonight, Coach.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
It was just you know, hard working grit. We didn't
start out pretty good in the first half, but made
some adjustments in the second half defensively and came out
with the victory.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Sounds to me like defensively, you have to be pretty
pleased with what your kids did.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Yeah, yeah, I'm you know, I'm flirty, pretty pretty pleased
about that. I told him that, you know, offense may
not be here every night, but defensive travels. There's always travels.
No matter what Jim we go to, defense will travel.
So your defense always has to travel. So that's one
thing we preach and we practice each and every day
(14:51):
is you know, our deepens of principles and just trying
to stop people and turn people over.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
So were you in command of this game most the way.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
No, no providence. They were pretty tough. Coach Scott Miller
does a good job with those kids, right, he had
he had him playing really good. They got a big kid.
I can't think his name. I know his numbers number
twenty four. He's a big solid. He had at least
about right seven eight blocks on us tonight. He was
blocking everything, and so you know, they got with us
in the first half, and you know it was a
(15:22):
doll fight. But you know in the third quarter we
kind of took control and didn't look back from there.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
All right, tell me who plays well for you tonight?
Speaker 4 (15:30):
Coach Mark Bailey guard, senior guard Mark Bailey, He's about
six feet you know, he played real well for US.
Man he was everywhere defensively, ended up actud. It's that guy.
He had like seventh steels. Ye had twelve points seventh steels.
So he's he was everywhere. Another senior Derek Watson, he's
(15:51):
doing all everything. You know, we play him everywhere. He
could play one through five and he had a double double.
He had eleven points and tim rebounds. And then we
had a junior guard boyd guard Jane Litzenbauer. He you
know he had in the finished he let the team
scoring with seventeen.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
So you know, all right, who's up next for you? Yeah,
I'm sorry, go ahead.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
That's tough. No, no, tough andough. I'm glad you asked
that question. A very tough matchup going to Connersville, playing
down there, that's gonna be really tough.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Be a good, great test for your kids, no question,
no test. Yes, sir, yes, Sirry Metropolitan tonight with a
seven fifty seventy to fifty one win over Providence Christo
ray Lee Jackson, thanks so much for the call. Good
luck to you and your kids next time out against Connersville. Hey,
(16:42):
thank you, thanks very much. Girls basketball tonight, McCutcheon beats
Zionsville sixty five forty eight with me McCutcheon's Jeff Conoy coach,
thanks so much for the call and congratulations on an
impressive win tonight.
Speaker 5 (16:57):
Appreciate it, coach. Joy's a pleasure to talk to your.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Boys, great pleasure you, great pleasure to talk to you.
It's more my pleasure than yours. And you got to
stick around and talk to some old, washed up coach.
But it's always good to brag about your teams.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
I love to do that, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
All Right. So obviously you have a high standard at
mccutch and you you've had a tremendous program. Uh, tremendous foundation. Uh,
these young ladies come out, play hard, play well. Uh
tonight seems to be one of those situations.
Speaker 5 (17:31):
Well I appreciate that, coach. Yeah, we have got a
really good grip squad this year, we think, and I've
had one for several years now. So yeah, really good
game tonight out Zionsville. Is a super proud of our kids.
It's kind struggled a little bit lately, but uh kind
of got things rolling out and in against a really
long and athletic Zionsville team.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
So the link bothered you initially when you went and
went up against him, they zoned you and spread you
out a little bit.
Speaker 5 (17:54):
No, they just play a man and man. But we
were able to get the basket and then they were
just with their block and lost a lot of shots
for us. So we finally going to some trapping defenses
and got the ball out of the big kid's hands
and then force into a full court game and unfortunately
got a lot of runouts and laps and that kind
of thing which really helps outlessly and rolled out for
the more labs you get, the better chance out obviously,
so we got some runouts.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
Tell us a lot coach, I h. I tend to
believe that girls are boys basketball. If if you can
get a numerical advantage and get some run runouts, doesn't
matter what you're doing. That's that's uh. When I was
back one hundred years ago, when I was coaching, that
was key to what we tried to do is try
to get a numerical advantage as much as we could.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
Absolutely, I'm convinced the more in any high school the
batpan the same than said the same thing today, more
labs to get, the more easy shots you get, and
the better chance you have the ball going in, and
the ball goes in, you look like a pretty good
team and pretty good coach. So fortunately you sound like.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
I did the i U Indie and Youngstown State game
with Greg Rigshaw today on ESPN Plus, and I said
this multiple times. It's a it's a make or miss game.
If you make shots, you're probably gonna win. You misshot,
you're not gonna win. And that's exactly what you're talking about.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
My dad has said that forever whoever gets the ball
is so the game is so much easier when the
ball was in the basket. Kids get confidence to get
a little sringing on set, or if I plays well, it's.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Just an easier game.
Speaker 5 (19:18):
When the ball goes in and you have those nights,
son doesn't go in, so some goes in times a dozen. Obviously,
that's the way it goes.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
You're a better coach too when the ball coach.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
No, my God, or somebody that absolutely heck a coach
all goes in. We're all a lot better, right, We're
all a lot better.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
Yeah, absolutely, Who plays well for you tonight, coach?
Speaker 5 (19:37):
We actually had four kids in double figures off with you.
We're always led by our junior all stator at Lily Grave,
and she was our fourth leading sports tonight, which is
an intestament to our team. I think Lily was passing
ball but really really well today with four kids in
double figured chare it lifts can now and let us
a twenty one, and we had two other seniors that
had twelve points piece force it Lily had eleven. It
was probably ten rebounds in tennis, so she had a
(19:59):
great game, score a lot, but that's okay as long
as you get to win. So she was. She was
a really good player for us and played a well today.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Is it me or has Lily been playing for seven
or eight years? It seems she's.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
Been playing a long time. That's exactly right, and I
hope she's right. Everybody she's had. She's had a great
high school career for us, and she's only midway through
her junior year. So froke a thousand points last year
as a junior and it's had a great six start
to her excuse me as a sophomore and let her
had a great start to our junior season this year.
So looking forward to next year and a half of her.
That's for darn Cher.
Speaker 1 (20:30):
Who's up next for you, coach.
Speaker 5 (20:32):
We actually got Cokemo coming in town. He now that
is Cocoon is always a tough yeah, so they'll be
coming in there. Yeastructional opponent for us. So we'll play
them Friday and our boy girl double hitter, and then
we had the Valpo to play really tough Lily Barnes
led team up in Valpo on Saturday. So they'll be
a good week for us.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
McCutcheon, beats signs Wilt Tonight sixty five forty eight Jeff conoy,
I appreciate the call, Coach. Best of luck to you
and your kids next week.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Thanks coach, appreciate it having a great holiday.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
You're welcome. Thank you. Coming up top the our scoreboard
update with Nathaniel Finch. We'll talk more IU in Ohio
state football, get an update on where the Big Ten
Championship is. Plenty of things to talk about tonight. This
is Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk
