Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good eating everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk.
I'm Bob Lovell. It's brought to you by Indiana Donor Network.
Coming up, we have quite a bit tonight talking about
the Colts, talking about high school football and the fever.
Right now, though, we turn it over to the star
of our show. It's Network Indiana's Jace Hodge.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Coach a pleasure to whip to be with you and
a producer Cayden Colford on this Saturday night. I'm Jays
Hodge with his Network Indiana Sports Talk update for the
Indianapolis Colts. They got the victory today forty one to
fourteen as they wrapped up preseason play, getting their one
and only victory. Making the trip down I seventy four
to face the Bengals and the Colts forty one to
fourteen winners after Riley Leonard had a great day and

(00:46):
for Shane Stichen. He gave his thoughts after the game.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
I thought it was a hell of a team effort
by both sides of football, really all three phases. I
thought we played compan and football all the way through
the game with those young guys going out there competing.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
Gave great effort. A lot of guys show it up.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Obviously, d Scott getting the pick six there to go
up ten nothing was huge, and thought Riley did some
really good things, and Bean did some good things, and
Treadwell did some good things. So total group effort there
on the win, so's good.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
The Colt will now take the week off before they
begin Week one on the seventh against the Miami Dolphins
at home for the Indiana Fever. They lost last night
ninety to ninety five against the Minnesota Links at home.
They will now travel to take on the Links tomorrow
at seven o'clock to try to get some revenge on
the best team at the WNBA, as they currently sit

(01:30):
at six in the W just above Seattle and Golden Say,
who are tied for the last two playoff spots a
lot in the WNBA. The Fever will look to get
that win tomorrow to stay on track in the playoff picture.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Lovell and this is Indiana
Sports Talk. So glad you joined us on a.

Speaker 4 (01:49):
Very busy, busy Saturday night.

Speaker 5 (01:51):
Thanks for listening to us. Last night.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Louisville beats the Indianapolis Indians tonight eight to one with
me the legendary Hall of Fame voice of the Indians,
Howard Kellman.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Howard, thanks so much of the call. Tough night for the.

Speaker 6 (02:06):
Indians, Bob, Syracuse blanked the Indians for nothing today, the
second consecutive night that the Syracuse Mets have shut out
the Indians. And I'll tell you, Bob, it was really
rough because in each of the first two winnings the
Indians had meant it first and second, nobody out and

(02:26):
did not score, and they didn't score a run the
entire game. Be shut out back to back games, and
look where we've hit a rough stretch. The team has
had such a terrific year, but there's been so many
injuries in the last ten days and that's taking its toll.
I've told you several times throughout the season, what a

(02:46):
good lineup the Indians have lineup, but it's not the
case anymore now because of all the injuries.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Yeah, the injuries have been debilitating, and here you are
this particular seat.

Speaker 5 (02:58):
Part of the season.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
People are wearing down a little bit. Call ups are
going to.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Be an issue too, and you know, it's really kind
of frustrating to go to back to back shutouts.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
That's not easy for anybody to deal.

Speaker 6 (03:14):
With, well exactly, especially when you're trying to catch a
couple of teams ahead of you in the standings and
finish first. But what really hurt about these injuries they
were a bit freakish. Two of them that were very important.
Two guys who'd been playing great, g One Bay and
Matt Fraser both fouled balls off their legs and ended

(03:35):
up on the injured list with weak contutons. And that
usually doesn't happen. Usually you get a bone bruise, but
you hang in there. Yeah, you stay in the game
usually too, So that's part of it. Billy Cook out
with an injured risk. We thought he'd be out four
to five days. He was hit with a pitch ball
two weeks ago Sunday and he still hasn't returned to

(03:56):
the lineup. Got hit in the left wrist with a
pitch ball. So it's been tough.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Now.

Speaker 6 (04:02):
The Indians are five games out of first place with
these two losses with twenty five to play, and they
have three teams ahead of them. They're five behind first
place Scranton. They are three behind second place Syracuse and
a game behind third place Toledo. Now I can say
longtime Chicago cub fans. The Cubs in nineteen sixty nine

(04:27):
were five games ahead of the Mets with twenty five
games to play. Not only did the Mets catch them,
they gat them out by eight games.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Yeah, there's a lot of time left, but you know,
you got to put things together. An important thing obviously,
need to get the bats moving and drive people in.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
So hopefully that'll happen tomorrow. What times?

Speaker 6 (04:50):
Game time Tomorrow, game time one o'clock for the finale.
And this is the finale of a twelve game road trip.
They split the six games in Scranton prior to this series.
Victory Field will be the place to be beginning on Tuesday.
We have two home stands left, the first of which
is Tuesday at six thirty five dollar Menu and Wednesday

(05:14):
at Victory Field. Bob will be PJ McConnell Knight perfect.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
That's great, Howard Kelman, the voice of the Indianapolis Indians.
Indians lose at Syracuse for nothing.

Speaker 5 (05:26):
Wrap up the series tomorrow. Back in town Tuesday night.
Make sure you get to the.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Ballparking by Howard's book sixty one Humors and Inspiring lessons
I learned from baseball Howard, thanks so much, as always,
have a great night, Bob.

Speaker 6 (05:40):
As always, I thank you very much.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
College football right around the corner, Ball State will start
their season, new season, new coach. Lots of things to
talk about with me from our great station in Munsey.
Wmun's Mark Forrester. You all know Mark Forster. It's a
very important part of India and sports.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
So kemo, Mark, coach.

Speaker 7 (06:03):
How are you great to connect again?

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Wonderful to connect? So give me the update on your son.
How's he doing well?

Speaker 7 (06:10):
Fifteen months? I tell you next couple of weeks. We
uh were waiting for him to be on two feet
and walk around a little bit, which puts us quite
in a mine because when they're mobile, it's dangerous.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
Right yeah, well, yeah, a little bit.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
I'm just curious that has he committed yet?

Speaker 5 (06:30):
You know it made a choice? Does he made a choice.

Speaker 7 (06:32):
In he's in Cardinal Country now. If he gets my
athletic talent, I'm not sure it's there'll be schools that
want him to commit, but we're hoping he has a
little bit more athleticism than his dad does.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
All right, I'm glad you called me, But you know
how this show goes, heartbreaks make it interesting. I have
to I need you to hang on through this short
break so you and I can come back and talk
about ball State football.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
How does that sound sounds great to me? Coach, I'll
have Mark.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Forrester stay with us and we'll talk about the ball
State football program. Mike y Rimovich, their brand new coach.
They get started against the boiler Makers coming up on
the thirtieth. We'll talk about that plus more when we
come back on Indiana Sports Talk. Welcome back everyone, This

(07:22):
is Indiana Sports Talk time to talk college football. Ball
State starts their season next weekend at Purdue, taking on
the boiler Makers. Brand new coach mikey Rimovich joining them
with me to talk about it.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
Mark Forrester from our great.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Affiliated station w mun and Munsey, Mark, thank you for
doing this. I know there's a lot of excitement about
coach Urimovich being there and this edition of the Cardinals.

Speaker 7 (07:49):
Yeah, and there's there's equal amount of excitement and an
equal amount of unknown as I'm sure it's the same
with a lot of college but your teams, whether they
have a new head coach or not. Ball State had
fifty new players joined their team this offseason. That includes
going into the spring, and then another fifteen to twenty
that joined them in between spring and fall practice, which again,

(08:13):
you know, people have asked me, as I'm sure they
ask you about certain teams and you know, and they
asked me, Hey, how's ball State football looking? And I said,
great question. We're gonna find out because it's really hard
to predict what to see when you have that much
of a difference with roster. And again, part of it's
probably the new coaching staff. Naturally there's transition there, but

(08:37):
also it's the state of where we're at in college football,
no question about it. But I've been saying this coach
throughout that I think the state of college football may
help mid majors more than people give them credit for
because I think that there's no stayin power in the conference.
I think you can compete right away, Whereas when you

(08:57):
would hire a new head coach, you gave them three
years to say, Okay, build your program, bring in your
guys and get established. I feel like there's a springboard
to be able to compete right away, become be eligible
and compete for a MAC title, which all of those
things have been under to me. I talked to coach
Riimovich started this last week on Thursday. He joins me

(09:17):
on my show each and every week, so you know,
there is no springboard, there is no easing end to this.
They feel like they can compete right away and they
like what they have so far in fall practice.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Well that, as you point out, I think people are
slowly coming to understand the new era of college sports.
You will literally have a brand new roster, the potential
of having a brand new roster every year, and if
it's not an entirely new roster, significant number of people
will change. That's the nature of the game as it

(09:49):
is right now. And I think the challenge for coaches
is not so much the recruiting. The challenge is to
simplify a system that you can teach and learn in
a shorter amount of time than you've ever done before,
and to build that culture and all those things that
you talk about. That becomes a real challenge for everyone.

Speaker 7 (10:12):
Well, and I think it's exciting for coach Roimovich and
this program. You know, he mentioned to me this past
week that he would love to play twenty six to
twenty seven guys on both sides of the football on.

Speaker 6 (10:24):
A game in, game out basis.

Speaker 7 (10:26):
Right now, he feels pretty good about the low twenties
in that regard. So the fact of the matter is
there's a lot of competition at a lot of spots.
He mentioned specifically, they love the defensive line and actually
defensive lines where they brought in a lot of new
faces and that group has just really really gelled very well.
Cardinal fans will know the quarterback name Kyle Kelly, who

(10:47):
has been in the transfer portal twice coach and has
decided to stay with the Cardinals. That happened this past
offseason when coach Rimovic came in. He took a look
and stayed. And I talked to him back in June
and asked him all about that, and he said, you know,
I made a commitment. I want to stick it out.
And now he's been rewarded as the starting quarterback heading

(11:08):
into the season. He started the back half of two
years ago. But yeah, you know, for for whatever reason,
you know, just different in different packages for him offensively
took him out of the opportunity for starting quarterback. And
now in his senior season, people are just so happy
for him and I think the community is going to
wrap their arms around. The quarterback is such an important position,

(11:31):
but just the story he's gone through and the way
he's treated the community, it'll be very exciting to see
him take the field as the starting quarterback a week
from today.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
Mark and your conversations with coach you rimavisch what's he
talking about schematically? What's he talking about doing on both
sides of the ball.

Speaker 7 (11:47):
Well, first conversation happened in December, coach, and he told me,
he said, if we got two great quarterbacks and they're
two of our better players, we're going to play them.
If we've got eight offensive linemen that are capable, we're
going to play him on the game and game out basis.
So everything you hear coaches Taylor their schemes to their
best players, right, and that's kind of the way he

(12:08):
explained it. He said, you know, if we got four
running backs, we're gonna play him. And so I think
it'll be fascinating to see early on where that ross.

Speaker 5 (12:20):
Did Jeffersonvilla lovea side.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
For this Network. Indiana Sports Update, I'm Jay Sodge. The
Indianapolis Colts getting the win today forty one to fourteen
and their final preseason game. Londer had a great day
and so did Jason Bean, both quarterbacks winning for one
touchdown in that ballgame get the Colts the victory over
the Cincinnati Bengals. Looking right now though, into Major League Baseball,
the Cleveland Guardians are getting walloped by the Texas Rangers

(12:48):
ten zero, currently in the eighth inning. The Chkygo White
Sox they lead the Minnesota Twins six to three in
the eighth inning as well the Reds. They currently trail
eight zero in the fifth against the arizon Naebacks, tracking
down that final wildcard spot in the National League, but
still a game and a half behind the New York
Mets for the best team in baseball. The Detroit Tigers.
They get the victory four to two at home against

(13:11):
the Kansas City Royals. The final score from Detroit and
the Cubs and Angels just now beginning from Anaheim. That
one underway as the Cubs looked to trying to stay
a few games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. Last
for Minor league baseball, we heard from Howard Kellman the
Indianapolis Indians. They lost four zero and Syracuse and there
are game and a half behind Toledo in the second

(13:31):
half standings, trying to get to first the Fort Wayne
ten Caps. They trailed the Lake County Captains four to two,
and the seventh inning the South Bend Cubs last look
was two zero. They led the Cedar Rapids Colonels. South
Bend currently is twenty eight and twenty three in the
second half standings and they are tied currently for first
with the Beloit skycarp Keeping it local. Now with the

(13:53):
ND eleven, they got the victory at home over MIAMIFC.
They won three to two. The eleven currently sit the
last playoff spot as it stands, but two goals from
Jack Blake got them the win today at three to two.
We'll get into some racing in the next scoreboard update
with the Milwaukee Mile tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
Welcome back everyone, This is Indiana sportsk Mark Forrester rejoins
us from WMUN talking about Ball State. Mark, welcome back,
Sorry about that abrupt ind to our conversation. We're talking
about ball State coach Mike y Rimovich brand New.

Speaker 5 (14:30):
What is he again?

Speaker 1 (14:32):
I asked this question before the scoreboard update. What schematically,
what do we think we're going to see with this group?

Speaker 4 (14:40):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (14:40):
And no worries coach. It comes down to their best players,
and every coach kind of preaches this, sure, But the
way he described it was, Hey, if we have two
quarterbacks that are two of our better players, we're going
to find a way to get him on the field.
If we've got seven offensive linemen that all are capable,
we're going to find a way to rotate them in.
So it, and especially early on, I think there's going

(15:03):
to be a group that they're going to really trust.
Trust has been a word that he's mentioned a lot.
But as he mentioned to me this past thursday, hey,
every week's a reevaluation period.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
And they went to scout for Purdue.

Speaker 7 (15:15):
Back on Tuesday of last week, and he said, look,
we're actively looking at those scout guys too, not necessarily
in the week they're on scout, but they perform well.
You know, if they're they're performing well against some of
the starters or rotational players they expect for that upcoming game,
they're going to bring them into the mix to be

(15:36):
a part of the rotation the following week. So very
much revolving very much a week by week basis. But again,
you know, some of the positions you think you have
that one guy and until injury hits, you bring the
backup guy in, like quarterback. You know, I thought it
was very telling the way he said that finding ways
to get their best players on the field and get
the ball in their hands to make plays.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
That's how you win football games, no question about it.
And you talked about it.

Speaker 5 (16:02):
You know.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
It's a brand literally brand new roster. But it's this
day and age. We just need to play. And so
it's kind of cool that you're gonna open up with Purdue.
It'd be two teams with brand new rosters. Is how
this is gonna shake out next week?

Speaker 7 (16:19):
Yeah? I think that as we dive in more to
it this week and that matchup, how unique and all
of this is. And I imagine, you know, we dive
into the Perdue roster and they see a lot of
similarities that the ball State roster sees with you know,
fifty new players and different guys in different positions. I know,
Purdue just named their starting quarterback this past week, so

(16:40):
dive into that will be a lot of fun.

Speaker 5 (16:42):
And even though you've got a.

Speaker 7 (16:44):
Power for school school in Perdue and a mid major
program in ball State, they're gonna look at their offseasons
across the way and say they they went through the
exact same things we did. Now, all of that really
doesn't matter when they hit the field on Saturday, but
I think it'll be an interesting storyline. The other storyline
for ball State coach is defensively. Last year was a

(17:04):
major major point where they needed to improve. And Jeff
Noles was the defensive coordinator with Mike new last year.
Well before he came to Monthsye, he was the defensive
coordinator for mike Y Roimovich at Butler. Jeff Noles is
in his second year with Mikey Romovich there. They're very
very close over the years and have coached in a

(17:24):
variety of different spots, but it's the same defensive staff.
And actually Mikeay Roimovich, one of the assistants he brought over,
was the defensive coordinator on Butler's team last year. So
actually the defensive side of the ball has two guys
that have all placed before. So I'm very intrigued about
the defense coach. I think that that's that's the group
that has to start fast coming up this upcoming Saturday.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
What's the shape of the Mid American Conference? You talked
about mid majors, you know, maybe able to benefit from
some of the new happenings personnel wise, rule wise.

Speaker 5 (18:00):
In college football.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
So what's the league look like relative to what the
Cardinals are going to experience.

Speaker 7 (18:08):
Well, at the top of the league has really been
Miami of Ohio until for the last several years, Miami
of Ohio has been excellent. And they start with Wisconsin
next week, and that's the game I have my eyes
on because you know, it would not surprise me in
the least how good they're coached by Chuck Martin to
make things really really interesting in game number one. But

(18:30):
you've got teams at the top coach that are receiving
votes in the top twenty five. So again, you know,
you just never know what's going to happen in non conferences.
We know Mid American Conference schools are going to face
Power four competition, so you know, it's very difficult to
go through a season unscathed or with one loss, and
if you go one loss, you're comparing yourself against Power

(18:51):
for schools. So but I think the league's in a
very strong place. But I really think every year, because
of the transition and the new age of college foot.
As we mentioned at the beginning of the conversation, it
opens the door for teams like Ball State, who was
at the bottom. You know, Buffalo was near the bottom.
I don't think that they're staying power of teams that

(19:12):
are always consistently at the bottom having to go through
a two three year transition to get back to the top.
I think it can happen more quickly and more immediately
than ever before.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
I don't disagree at all.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
I think that's the beauty of being able to come
in and take over a program if you get things right,
if you were able to get a little bit lucky
on some kids and have them develop the base that
you hope they will, you know it just you need
to get it right. You need to get a little
bit of luck on your side, and you can make

(19:45):
a big leap and a short amount of time nowadays, no.

Speaker 7 (19:49):
Question, coach. I know I've been really broad in this conversation,
but I'll tell you this. It's a new kickoff next week.
I'll call you after it and I'll probably have some
more specifics to give you after what we and west
walthiad on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (20:02):
He's Mark Forrester, one of the best. He's an alumnus
of Indiana Sports Talk and we're glad does great work
on the IHSA Champions Network and happy for you. Give
a kiss your wife and and Leo. Give them our best. Mark,
I appreciate you doing this. We'll talk next weekend.

Speaker 7 (20:23):
Yes, thanks coach, look forward to it. Always good to
talk to you.

Speaker 5 (20:25):
Thanks a lot.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Mark Forrester from w m U n N Mounsey talking
about the ball State Cardinals. Cardinals taking on Purdue noon
start on the thirtieth.

Speaker 5 (20:37):
US next week. We're at that point.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Coming up tonight, we're gonna talk about the Predue Boilermakers,
you know this matchup.

Speaker 5 (20:46):
We'll talk about what's new with the Boilers.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
As Mark pointed out, they've named the quarterback, so we're
talking with Rob Blackman about that.

Speaker 5 (20:54):
Also coming up tonight, we got Colts to talk about.
All right, Jace Hodge, are you there? Are you with me?

Speaker 2 (21:03):
I sure, am coach? How you doing?

Speaker 5 (21:04):
Tell me Bauck to Colts today? What happened?

Speaker 1 (21:06):
I know they won so and you know preseason games
don't interest me in the slightest, but tell me what happened?

Speaker 2 (21:15):
Yeah, so forty one to fourteen winners. They had a
lot of points real quickly. I mean they had thirty
eight points with five minutes to go in the third quarter.
Both Jason Bean and Rody Leonard had a really good
games touchdown each. They both looked really good. I mean,
granted it's against third string players, but they both had
really good games. And the Colts overall and press today.

Speaker 1 (21:33):
I was listening to Greg and Bill Brooks do the
post game and their feeling was that they weren't certain.
It's just not even cared. All right, hang on, we'll
be back coming up top the hour, school Board Update
with Jase Hodge, and we're back talking football on Indiana
Sports Talk.
