Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good eating, everybody, and welcome to Network Indiana's Indiana Sports
Talk and Bob Lovell. This is Indiana Sports Talk. It's
brought to you by Indiana Donor Network. We're back, We're
glad to be back. Excited about season number thirty two.
Right now, though, we turn it over to the star
of our show. It's Network Indiana's Eddie Garrison.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Thank you, coach. But if there's a star around here,
it is you. It's a pleasure to be with you.
And Landon Coons on the first night of season thirty
two of Network Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk. A lot of
baseball to talk about, so let's get right into it.
The Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels are in
the bottom of the eighth inning in Detroit. It was
a five to three ball game going into the bottom
of the eighth. It is now six to five. Matt

(00:42):
Vierling with a three run home run to put the
Tigers on top and prevents Trek Scooble from getting credited
with the loss. He went four and two thirds and
gave up four earned rounds. He did strike out six
batters and that raises his era to two point three
five over in Chicago, it's the White and Sox. In
the Cleveland Guardians, it is a onslaught right now. The

(01:03):
Guardians are on top of the White Sox nine to one,
and that is just in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ten or baby five and a third through this ballgame.
He has seven strikeouts does the Guardians starting pitcher Kyle
Manzarro has two. It's Carlos Santana has four RBIs for
the Cleveland Guardians. Also in action right now in Saint

(01:24):
Louis are the Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs. A very
very pitcher dual match between these two teams thus far,
one to nothing advantage Cardinals, with that run coming in
the bottom of the second inning, with Jordan Walker reaching
on an infield single. For Network Indiana Sports, I'm att
A Garrison.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Welcome back, everybody. I'm Bob Lovel. This is Network Indiana's
Indiana Sports Talk, brought to you by Indiana Donor Network.
It's a busy weekend. We have basketball, we have football,
high school football. In two weeks. Racing to that end.
IndyCar is in Portland, the Voice the NTIT IndyCar series.

(02:02):
Mark James joins me. Mark, thanks so much for the call.
I hope you're well.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Bob Lovell is back on Indiana Sports Talk and all
is right with the world.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Well, I might argue, there are plenty of people who
would argue it is good to be back. It's hard
to believe that this is season number thirty two for
Heaven's Sax and Try. And you know this, they told
us it would never work. I mean they'd literally look
me in the eye and go, this is a bad idea,
this will never work.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Happy to say that I've done the scoreboard update, I've
hosted the show, been a guest on the show over
those thirty two years, and yet somehow you're still going
strong despite my ratings, killing appearances.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Well, I think it shows the amazing resiliency we have
to be honest. All right, we're racing. You got three
more races right to go in the series, and Alex
Polok can wrap it up tomorrow or on Sunday, am
I correct.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Yeah, I mean, there's it's just been an unbelievable season.
I mean, with all of the wins that he's racked up,
and I mean you look at at Paddow Award, who's
one hundred and twenty some odd points back, and you
look at Kyle Kirkwood, who's even further back and out
of contention. And I mean both of those guys had
multiple wins, and in any other season they would be

(03:22):
talking about a championship and contendent for one. But I mean,
he's well within striking distance of numbers put up by
the likes of Ol Senior and A. J.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Floyd.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
And as competitive as this series is, the fact that
he's been able to do what he's done this year
is absolutely incredible. And oh, by the way, there's the
cherry on the top of winning his first Indianapolis five hundred.
So you can't you can't do much better than he's
done this year, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
No, I go back to me, I go back to
many conversation is well, he's great on the on the
road courses. He's never won on an oval, and it
was basically just it's a matter of time before he
won on an oval. Whatever, whatever the course, whatever the situation,
he can. He's a race driver, he's a winner, and
that crew has just been incredible all year long.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Quickly, I think earning the label of a generational talent.
And yeah, you know, as for all the success that
he's had. I mean, let's face it, I mean he
could coast, but he's got no interest in coasting. I mean,
one of the fastest in practice today at Portland, and
he wants to sit on Fall and he wants to
win the race, and he's gonna want to win Milwaukee,

(04:33):
and he's gonna want to win Nashville. I mean, he's
he doesn't want to wrap up that season any other way.
And he said, you know, I've got short term memory
on every race that I've won this year, he said,
I'll have time to celebrate the five hundred and other
things when the end of the season rolls around, he said,
But I'm not approaching, he said, I'm approaching this weekends

(04:53):
as though I've yet to win a race. Every weekend
brings a new challenge, and I think that mindset this
year has served him very very well.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
I'd say it would that would serve all of us
well to have that approach to it. Kristin Lunguard, fastest
on the day. Tell me about this track out in Portland.
Give me the ins and outs of this course.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
In many respects, it's a lot like at Oval. I
mean it's a little under two miles in length. They're
running laps in the fifty eight second range. Will Power
has the qualifying record at fifty seven had changed. I
don't know that we'll get there or not, but we'll
flirt with that, I think in qualifying tomorrow. But it's
very flat, there's no banking whatsoever, there's no elevation, changes,

(05:36):
very long back straight away from seven all the way
down to nine. It's got a little bender in it.
But the troublesome spot is turned number one. I mean,
it is an abrupt right handed turn and then they
turn right back to the left, and that's been the
scene of a lot of chaos over the years that
we have every reason to believe that Sunday will be
certainly like that. So I think qualifying will be at

(05:57):
a premium. And I think you're gonna want to start
the first scutle and rose to avoid the melee that
typically takes place and turn number one.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
So here's what I don't understand. If everybody knows turn
one's a problem, why don't they do something about it?

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Well, the race car drivers and while certainly you know
Kyle Novak who's the race director, will give them the
usual Hey, you can't win it and lap rock turn one.
They'll all sit there and they'll nod and approval, and
then all of a sudden they put their helmets on,
and that's where the disconnect occurs.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
Man, all right, besides Lunguard, who else had a great
day out in practices today?

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Well? Well, power look pretty good. Joseph Dugarten looked pretty good.
Colton Heardam was in the top ten Conner Daily, obviously
a local favor for Noblesville, Indiana. He was flirting with
the top ten most of the day today. I mean,
it's the usual spots, suspects award and the ones that
have been there, been there all year long, So it'll
be it'll be interesting to watch it all unfold with
qualifying tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Are you got time to hang on through a short
break and talk a little more Mark James, the legendary
Mark James, Hall of Fame, broadcaster, friend of the show,
thank God, a friend of mine. We'll come back and
talk more racing live from Portland and talking about the
race coming up on Sunday. Short break. This is Network
Indiana's Indiana Sports Talk. Welcome back, everyone, this is Indiana

(07:19):
Sports Talk. We're talking with Mark James the voice of
the Indianapolis five hundred and the NTT IndyCar Series. IndyCar
is in Portland, a big race coming up on Sunday.
Qualifications tomorrow, plenty of things to talk about. Mark, You
look at this race coming up. Obviously we talk about

(07:42):
Alex Plow and the season he's had, but it has
been You have a much better perspective clearly than I do.
But I think as a casual observer of it, I
think it's been an exciting year for IndyCar.

Speaker 3 (07:55):
Yeah, I don't think there's any question. I mean, we've
we've had certainly a lot compelling races. You know, with
the introduction to the hybrid, it's now officially a year old,
and I think teams have really figured that out. I
got to give a lot of credit to Firestone, the
tire supplier, because they've they've messed around with the tire
compounds a little bit, and they've done so as a

(08:16):
result of testing and things of that nature, and you know,
it's it's really made strategy a part of racing again.
And you know, we don't have rock solid two stop
or three stop races. They added some laps to a
handful of races and so put more strategy into it.

(08:37):
And you know, we give all the credit the world
to Alex below, but his race strategist, Barry Wantser is
just done a masterful job this year of knowing exactly
when to bring Alex into the pits. And you know,
I don't know how many times he's been hanging around
the top five, of the top six, and over that
last ten he finds his way to the front and

(08:58):
finishes the deal and closes it out. I mean a
lot of folks put so much attention on the driver,
and understandably so. But as you well know, coach, you've
been around all forms of sports all your life, and
no matter what the sport, other than maybe golfer, tennis,
it's it's it's it's a team effort, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Yeah, we forget. I mean, you know that right rear
tire changer is as important as anybody on the team
man quite quite frankly, and everybody understands it. I think
that's the cool part about it. Mark James joining us.
We're talking about IndyCar racing in Portland on on Sunday.
All right, Mark, it's been an interesting season, as we

(09:36):
point out, still a lot of racing to go. Polo
has had a great year. Who in your mind might
have surprised you or surpassed what the expect expectations might
have been to this point.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
The second half of the season, I'd say maybe even
going back to the Dapolis five hundred, I think Prema,
brand new to the series, is a team with with
a lot of history, a poll center and a rookie
for the Indy five hundred. But Calubima Ilot, their veteran
if you will, has really put together a strong final
quarter of the season. I mean he's got back to

(10:10):
back top tens for that team that's new to the
NTT IndyCar Series. They did no testing coming into the season.
They've done no testing on this season, and that they've
been able to rack up a couple of top tens
and set on a pole at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
for the five hundred, I think speaks well for the
direction that they're going. I mean, they've got some personnel

(10:31):
changes throughout the course of the season. They've really up
their game. I think collectively, Errol McLaren has up their game.
They stole probably Kanan as their team principal I mean
they've added Kyle Morier of late most recently with with
Tenski Racing and a proud nineteen eighty two graduate of
men Early High School by the way, but they're doing

(10:51):
well with Nolan Siegal and paddle Award at Christian Looinguard.
So yeah, there's certainly some teams. Mandreddig Globolo has had
a good year ECR with Christian Rashmussen Alexander Rossi. They've
been competitive weekend and week out. So yeah, if you
look just below the domineeson that alex below has had,
there's certainly plenty of good storylines. I think the big

(11:13):
one yet to be fairted out coaches. Where is Will
Power going to end up? There's still no word from
Team Penske about his future, and even though he is
over the last couple of seasons been the most successful
driver at Team Penske. We'll see if Roger decides to
move on from Will or give you at least one
more year on his contract.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
All right, quickly, what's your schedule? What time are you
guys on for the qualification report?

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Well, I can make it simple for you that if
you join us at twelve o'clock Eastern on all the
usual outlets. We will pretty much be on until about
nine o'clock local time tomorrow night, so plooding of racing
all day long before we go racing on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
I'll track you down tomorrow night later on Mark Chains
has always great to talk to you.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Mark.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
Have fun tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
Thanks coach.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
With this Indiana Sportstocks scoreboard update, I'm at a garrison.
Let's get an update on some of those Major League
Baseball games. It's in the top of the ninth inning
in Detroit between the Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels,
and the Tigers are two ounces away from picking up
their sixty sixth win of the season. There's one out.
They are currently on top of the Halos six to five.

(12:20):
There was some scoring done in Chicago between the White
Sox and the Cleveland Guardians. Chicago played at three runs
in the bottom of the sixth inning, chasing Tanner Biby.
His book is closed five and a third innings pitched
for teen or Biby tonight, four earned runs, four walks,
and he struck out seven White Sox batters. Colson Montgomery
is zero for two. He did walk in the sixth inning,

(12:44):
and would come around to score for Chicago. The Cardinals
in the cups. They are in the bottom of the
fifth and they are about to head to the top
of the sixth and a couple of outseers Saint Louis
threatening to add some runs to their lead. They are
currently on top of one to nine thing. Jordan Walker
had an infield RBI single right now second and third,

(13:05):
one out for Saint Louis. Matthew Boyd on the mound
for Chicago. Four innings pitched to he has surrendered six
hits and three strikeouts going final just before the show
the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates of his game
two of four in Pittsburgh, and both games thus far
in the series have gone in favor of the Bucos

(13:26):
three to two today over the Cincinnati Reds, who have
now lost three consecutive games. Brian Reynolds with the basis
clearing triple that put Pittsburgh down from two to one
to a head three to two. Dennis Santana picks up
his seventh save of the season. Reds are now sixty
and fifty seven. For Network Indiana Sports, I'm Ata Garrison.

Speaker 1 (13:45):
Welcome back everyone on Bob Lovel. This is Indiana Sports Off,
brought to you by Indiana Donor Network, season number thirty two.
Star of the show Tonight, the one and only Eddie Garrison. Hello, Reddy,
Hello coach.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
It's a pleasure to be with you tonight.

Speaker 1 (14:00):
More pleasure for me than you. I know that I've
missed you.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
I've missed you as well. Have you been not busy
a lot of pool action?

Speaker 1 (14:10):
I have spent my fair year of time by the pool, Yes,
I have. And that's kind of why we built it.
You know, years ago, I was still in that coaching
biz and got our daughter through college and didn't know
anybody any money. And my wife comes in and goes,
you know, because of basketball, we never take vacations. I

(14:35):
think it'd be a good idea for us to build
a pool. And I said, you know what, there's no
point in me getting into this argument because I can't win.
So I know I agree with and we did. That
was thirty Well shows me on thirty two. We built
the pool thirty one years ago, and the idea was,
you know, you have a vacation in your backyard anytime

(14:58):
you want it, and it's we've tried our best to
get in it every day and we're we're pretty good
about it. So yeah, I mean it's fun to take
a couple months off but getting ready to play some football.
So to that end, what went on last night with
the Colts, it was I'm not sure how you get

(15:19):
excited about what happened. You lose Anthony Richardson for a
while because of a finger injury, and it just seemed
like a rather pedestrian effort last night.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Yeah, I mean, that's what happens.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
You know, it's preseason, and I know, you know, frankly,
none of us care, but it is important nonetheless.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Yeah, And I always felt like in preseason there's nothing
you can do to help your case. There's only things
you can do to our hurt case. And from all
the reports that have been coming out today, whether that's
ESPN's ANAM schefter Jordan Schultz with CBS Sports, it sounds
like it was just only a dislocation for Anthony Richardson.
He should be back on the practice field tomorrow. So
that's one positive if you're a fan of the Indianapolis Court.

(16:04):
But yeah, I mean, yesterday was not pretty from him
and those limited number of snaps he got Daniel Jones.
The stet line doesn't necessarily indicate how you know average
he was It was ten of twenty one, but I
think there were four drops last night, but Colts receivers
and he was in the ballgame, so you know that
ten of twenty one realistically should have been fourteen of
twenty one. So you're looking around sixty seven percent completion percentage.

(16:26):
And of course there were some issues with the run
defense last night for the Colts, And you don't really
know how to evaluate these things because most of the
guys that were playing last night were your your depth
pieces in backup bright much of your starters.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
Yeah, and we also know that your starter's time is
going to diminish as as we get closer and closer
to opening day, and so I think it'll be difficult
to get a read on this group until actually till
the season starts.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
Yeah. I know they have got joint practices with a
joint practice, I should say with the Green Bay. So
they'll practice the next three days at four o'clock at
Grand Park, So Saturday, Sunday, Monday, all those coming from
four and until five o'clock, and some of them a
couple of minutes after five o'clock and then on a
Thursday will be the final practice of training camp, that
is the fourteenth against the Packers, that will start at

(17:17):
three and go until five. So I would assume that
most of the starters will be playing in that joint practice,
and now it'll be determined if the starters want to
play in that second preseason game. And I don't know
if you're in this camp coach, but the defense has
a new defensive coordinator and you've got a somewhat new
quarterback that's competing for the starting job. You would think
that if you're Shane Stack here and you want to

(17:37):
get some of those starters on the field so that
they can get some reprofessions a on defense with the
new system, and then be on offense just getting used
to one another.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
I would come down on the side of let's play, guys,
and injuries are part of live Injuries are part of
the NFL. No way you can control them, and it's
just your role dice every time you put somebody out
on the field. And I understand you're taking a chance,
but there is no substitute for some cohesion and an

(18:08):
ability to work together and play together and work on
those kinds of things. So put me down on the
side of going ahead and playing.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Some Yeah, me too. I'm right there with you.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
What our poor Fever. I cannot feel any worse for
a great group of people than what they're they endured
last night. My goodness, coach, Oh it is I mean,
it's horrible. Yea, oh my. They've been playing so well.
It's such a fun group to talk about and watch
and be a part of it. It's it's really I mean,

(18:40):
it's a fantastic story, fantastic group of ladies. And oh,
my goodness.

Speaker 2 (18:47):
Yeah, you have Aery McDonald today being an outs that
she'll miss the remainder of the year. She broke a
bone in her right foot last night in the fourth quarter.
And then Sidney Colson, who is I think thirty six
years old. She signed with the Fever to kind of
be the the championship pedigree, the backup, the veteran she
tears at acl last night. Of course, Kaitlyn Clark, she's
missed the last nine games with that right groin injury.

(19:08):
She's missed eighteen on the season. Now the Fever are
probably gonna have to go out and find somebody off
kind of like the day with Erry McDonald to play
point guard, because right now the only healthy guard they
have is Kelsey Mitchell.

Speaker 1 (19:20):
And what is the timetable on Caitlyn Clark.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
Nobody knows. There's been no update right now from Stephanie
Whining company. I've always been saying since she went out
with that groin injury that August, the twenty seconds probably
going to be the most likely date, just because ever
since the calendar turned the month of August, they've been
playing every other day, so you haven't been able to
get practices together, and if you can't practice, then she
can't really, you know, haven't You're standing on how she's

(19:44):
feeling after practices and having to rehab from that. So
there's a game on the seventeenth that the Indiana Fever
have and then they've got a few days off. It'll
be on the twenty second, So that four day window
right there is probably the reason why I lean towards
Kitlyn Clark returning on the twenty second. But you don't
know if these injuries are going to play a frontor
or not. And if you do accelerate her back from

(20:04):
that injury, does it you know, breed another injury or
does aggravated. Next thing, you know, she's got to miss
even more time, and you're vying for a playoff positioning.
It's very jumbled up right now in the WNBA standings.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
I just know it's clearly disappointing for everyone. If you
like basketball, you like to watch a team that plays
the way they play. They love one another, play for
each other, move the ball, well can shoot it. It's
a tremendously run franchise, and so you know you can't
help but root for them, and you can't help but

(20:38):
agonize for them. Right now, all right, Eddie, great to
be back. Just trying to remember we've been on thirty
two years. You weren't born when we first went on,
were you? No?

Speaker 2 (20:49):
I was negative five.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
Yeah, So no one, if I'm correct, no one who
works the show, scoreboard, running the board, those kinds of things.
No one was born before we started the show.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
I'd have to check on Brad Huber. He may be
the only one.

Speaker 1 (21:05):
He might be the he might be the guy. So
this makes me incredibly old, Eddie. I'm just saying. I mean,
we all know I'm old, but my goodness, Eddie Garrison.
