(00:02):
Well here hello all to love meto introduce the podcast of the highest class
of women's schools, Pack twelve.Look at the rankings if you needed to
prove numbers, never lying either,do wand speaking the truth of the calm,
the chaos, we bring in thepassion and the player of the year
who'll be a crown shad begin let'sget the cracking. What's happening? And
Mary Murphy and Ashley Adams saying hereweek back again, draft pick filled talent,
(00:28):
fueled with arguably the best player inthe country at the forefront. Another
check park in what could be aspecial season. The Oregon Ducks sweep the
regular season and tournament championships in twentytwenty. In the back twelve and that
was Adam Amine on the call forESPN Sunday for the ducks dominating win over
(00:52):
Stanford. Welcome to podcast, everybody, And just as we all surmised last
week, this was Organ's tournament tolose, and no one even came close
to stopping the Ducks from getting itdone, Ashley Adam said, Mary Murphy
calling Ferrell with you to break downa while four days in Las Vegas,
Mary, have you have you recoveredI'm working on it. I'm working very
hard on recovery. I'm hydrating.Well, we're doing this. I should
(01:14):
tell everyone that we're doing this alittle bit differently because I'm usually in San
Francisco there with you, but I'mdoing the podcast from my hotel room in
Las Vegas, so I'm staying onfor the men's tournament, which starts tomorrow.
In the pod, still look freshis a little bit different, but
I'm feeling fresh. I'm feeling notlike I've been in Vegas for seven days.
(01:34):
All right. We got we gota lot coming up for you.
We got two for the price ofone in the podcast today, we've got
two guests. Minion More from Oregonis going to join us in about eight
minutes, and then the head coachof the Cowbear, Sharmon Smith. She's
on the recruiting trail, but shemade some time for us, so looking
forward to catching up with both ofthem. Obviously Oregon that the big storyline.
(01:56):
We're going to talk about whether ornot they're deserving or whether we think
that they will be the numb oneoverall seed on selection Monday when the brackets
come out. But there were alot of other big storylines, ladies that
came out of the tournament. Iwant to make sure we get to So
Mary, let's just start this way. You're your favorite basketball moment from the
tournament was what, Well, it'snot necessarily basketball, but it's the joyfulness
(02:17):
of Oregon. Sometimes after a teamdoes what they've done, it's more like
relief, like, oh, thatburden was so but the just the utter
joy that that team had, andSabrina in particular for me, and the
level of play by Oregon that broughtthat happiness. I thought, Sabrina and
Ruthian, Satu and Mignon, we'reall just exceptional. You know. There
(02:38):
was never any question like the firstquarter maybe against Stanford and then it was
just sort of like what happened, you know, up in Eugene when they
played They are clearly the best teamin the Pectual Conference, and the Pectual
Conference is the best conference in thecountry, and so just how great they
are and what they aspire to thisyear. I thought they were inspiring on
the floor and off. You know, Sabrina every time you got a shot
(03:01):
of her. You know, youguys, we've watched her for four years.
She's been a very serious player onoccasion you get her. If you
can get her to crack a smilein an interview, you're like giving yourself
a pat on the back, likeyou're breaking your arms saying, oh,
that was great. But just shewas so joyful that it just made me
feel good about how where she's atand how she's feeling about things, and
(03:22):
that that was really my best basketballmoment was just watching how happy everybody was.
I think that's a good point,Mary, because it is. You
know, Oregon has had a lotof They've been very serious because they obviously
are are mission minded, and they'vegot one thing on their brain and that's
to win, and that's to gowin a Natty and that's very clear.
But I agree with you that thejoy that I saw from that squad and
(03:46):
being on the court with them whenthey were cutting down the nuts excuse me,
and you know they get Kelly Graveswith the cupcakes at the end and
it was like a high school train. I had just this huge smile on
her face. Yeah, and itfelt like I mean, it was,
it was awesome. It was itwas great to see. It was clear
that that win and getting it backfrom Stanford after being upset last year meant
something to them a lot, andUM, yeah, it's been It's been
(04:10):
really cool for me. I lovedobviously Cal's win over ASU, only the
second time a twelve seed has wona game in the history of the tournament.
It was their second straight top twentyfive upset after they took down Arizona.
UM. Obviously, we're gonna talkto Sharman Smith about that coming up
in just a little bit. ButI loved the you know, I predicted
that we were going to have threeupsets on this podcast last week. We
didn't get there, but I feltlike that upset counted for more than one
(04:33):
for sure. And then I thoughtUtah getting its first win over under Lynn
Roberts, I should say, umwas an important step for that program.
Brennam Maxwell breaking the Utah freshman recordfor made threes? Do you think about
the youth on that squad? Andobviously the arrow was pointing up in Salt
Lake. Colleen, what are youwhat I mean? I can't believe we
even talked about the proposal yet.Well, so I was now getting two
(04:57):
favorite non basketball moments, So goahead, I think it was I just
tell I can't need to hear wehaven't debriefed this. I'm gonna tell you.
I'm gonna tell everyone on the podcasthow it came across in my ear,
and then I would love to hearhow you found out about this.
So we're doing the post game andit was after Oregon beat Arizona and we've
got Sabrina and Escu on the set, and we've got Kelsey Plumb on the
set, and it's this awesome interviewwhen we're talking about, you know,
(05:18):
when those two played, when Sabrinawas a freshman and took down the Huskies
in Seattle at Key Arena, andit was all this great stuff, And
all of a sudden, calling getsto my ear and she says, hey,
we had we just had a surpriseproposal and we've got some video,
and I'm thinking, Okay, somebodyproposed, Like I guess that's kind of
cool. Everybody loves a good surpriseproposal. And then she gets back in
my ear and she says it's AeryMcDonald and I'm like, and I can't
(05:40):
say, what the hell are youtalking about? On live TV, obviously,
but I'm thinking in my head,I must be miss hearing this,
Like Aery McDonald just got proposed whatyeah, so we so how did you?
Yeah, how did you find outabout it? So, you know,
the game broadcast tosses to you prettyquickly, and we come on and
we're in the first couple of minutesof our show, and and Will o'tool
our CP in the back and Ilove how and his dry delivery kills me
(06:05):
too, Colleen. Our cameras justcaught Ariy McDonald's proposal. You have it,
and you have it in the backrow. I'm like, will excitement
for a proposal the way he justwas very matter of fact and then uh,
yeah, So I told you girlsduring the Jill and Kelly interview,
I believe, and you guys wereall like what. Elise was like freaking
(06:27):
out. She was the best, and I was like, now listen,
this is how we're gonna like. You guys were so excited, and first
of all, I think at leastthought I was lying. I was like,
I'm not gonna lie in the middleof the show. So yeah,
we just kind of went through theplan and Bob went and grabbed a Arie
in her now fiance and it wasmade for I mean, we covered it
all in that a block. Igotta say it was. That was one
(06:50):
of the most epic a blocks I'vebeen a part of in television ever,
and it wasn't so Then after Sabrinagets off the set, then all of
a sudden, Yeah, Bob Smellsleycomes Soper with Aery McDonald and her fiance
Devon, who was apparently a footballplayer at Arizona. And just the look
on her face, she was inpure shock. I mean she just I
(07:12):
asked her, said, what's goingthrough your mind right now? And she
I've never seen Aary McDonald's speechless, and she did not know what to say,
and she just had this beautiful rockon her finger. And you know,
I think her line was, Idon't even care about the loss anymore?
Who who cares? It was.It was an epic moment. We
were trying to figure out if theyhad won that game. Do you think
he would have waited until the championshipto propose? What do you think,
(07:33):
Mayre? I'm saying yes, yeah, yeah, I don't know the coordination
of all the will you marry me? Like? You know, he had
the fans too, Why don't weask that? So here's my problem.
Yeah, that was I was inbetween games, so I had rushed to
the restroom and I was, youknow, singing Happy Birthday twice and washing
(07:54):
my hands for twenty seconds, andby the time I got back out,
like I had missed everything. Brutal. Yeah, it was. It happened
very quickly. It happened very quickly, but it was. It was awesome.
Congratulations to Airy and Devon, AndI told her, I said,
if it happened not our air, then that means that we get to get
invited to the wedding. So I'mlooking forward to seeing that invite in the
(08:15):
mail sometime soon. The crowds wereabsolutely amazing. That was the other thing
that really stood out to me.And Mary, you alluded to washing your
hands for twenty seconds, which iswhat I think. My hands are bleeding
still from all the handwashing I've donethis week. Obviously, there's a lot
going on, and I think peopleweren't sure with all the coronavirus stuff if
people were going to come to thegame, and I was just it was
the second largest overall attendance in thehistory of the tournament, and I think
(08:37):
that record would have been completely shatteredif the concern precautions being taken around the
coronavirus weren't a factor, so Ithe Oregon fans came out strong. They
had you know, the Sabrina jerseyswere incredible, and it just it was
it was special. It was reallyspecial to see the support that that that
that tournament got and rightfully so favoritenon basketball moments were you know, when
(09:01):
you're in Las Vegas, you spenda lot of time walking from the hotel
tower through the casino to the arena, and Mandalai Bay was a beautiful host
and it was a lot of fun. But casino life. You know,
I'm walking through the casino and it'salways about meeting the parents at this tournament,
you know, I'm walking, I'mhanging by the elevator and I meet
Keiana Williams mom and dad and talkingabout she had just come off a huge
(09:24):
game and just talking to them andyou watch them and you go, oh,
this is why Keana is so smileyand wonderful because you meet mom and
dad and you go, oh,that makes sense. And then I'm walking
by Starbucks and I see these twocount these two people in cow Jersey,
So I go up and got youguys must be so happy. It was
right after the upset, and theygo yeah, we're so happy. And
I go, who you here cheringfor? And we're Jalen Brown's parents,
(09:46):
and you're like, oh my god, you're like, hi, Jalen's Brown's
parents. You guys must be soexcited. And then Denisia Provo was walking
out with her dad and we allknow what he went through last year with
the ACL and bought her a dogand like fed her me and State and
salt like and helped her out.So to me, the tournament just turns
into this family affair where you know, I was standing outside of a restaurant
(10:07):
in my hauling shed and her momis standing there and I'm talking to may
about you've grown so much. I'mexcited to get to work, and the
mom's just standing there smiling, saying, yes, we're so proud of Maya.
And it's just those moments that werethese players who you watch become people
and then you look at their momand their dads and you're just like,
wow, no, wonder, you'resuch a cool person because look at this
great you know, this great parentingyou have, so that I'm glad you
(10:31):
brought that up. Mary. Weat halftime in the Champion we did a
Heather von who's in charge of marketingfor the conference, wanted us to do
something on International Women's Day because obviouslySunday with International Women's Day. So I
did a little thing on court withRoz Golden Wooday and Holly Row from ESPN,
and we were just talking about, you know, the women who have
(10:52):
inspired us and how inspired it isto be around all of the incredible student
athletes at the PAC twelve. Andone of the things I said was I
ended it by just saying, Iwant to say thank you to all the
moms and dads in here, becauseI know there are a lot of you
supporting your daughter and whatever you didand whatever you're doing, you're doing something
(11:13):
right because these are the most spendingfour straight days with the pactable women's basketball
players like it. Genuinely, I'mnot trying to sound cheesy. It gives
me hope for the future. There'sa lot of stuff going on right now
that doesn't make you feel good, and being around those young student athletes,
I mean, it's just it actuallyfeels like we are headed in the right
direction. We've got some incredible, incredible leadership. So shout out to the
moms and dads of the players. It's just it was incredible to see.
(11:37):
And lastly for me, I meanwe talk a lot about the number of
uniforms that Oregon has on the footballside, the men's basketball, women's basketball.
I have never seen so many OregonT shirts of various sizes and colors
and different ducks and script and fonts. I don't know where they come from.
I can't believe people walk around inT shirts for four days. They
(11:58):
don't wear collar shirts, they don'twear sweatshirts. Men and women of many
ages walking around in T shirts. So proud all these different schools, but
Oregon, Oregan. I don't knowwhere you get all these T shirts.
I don't know who's making them, but there are so many organ T shirts
it's unbelievable. Uncle phil Well. They couldn't even keep them on the shelf.
Mary. They sold out the OregonT shirts that every team has,
(12:18):
you know, a special pactwelve tournamentT shirt, and they were selling them
here at Mandalay Bay Events Center andthey could not keep them on the shelf.
They sold out in the first day. They order an entire new shipment.
They were done within an hour,So it was the Yeah, it
was the hottest T shirt in town, no doubt about it. But Oregon,
you know, they moved up tonumber two in the AP pole yesterday
and what they did in Vegas,it wasn't surprising, but that didn't make
(12:39):
it any less impressive. And thebest conference in the country. They get
three wins in three days by anaverage of more than twenty three points per
game. So to talk about thatrun, then fill us in on you
know where the Ducks go from here, national championship or bust. We welcome
in senior guard Minyon More and Minyon, how's your morning. It's it's still
good. I got to speak, which is different than the tactoture that since
(13:01):
you know it's back to back toback, So that's that was nice this
morning. But yeah, just takingeverything in so appreciated to all, like
the fans and all the love I'vegotten into that game. Yeah, what
was it like? And I'm gladyou got to sleep in you certainly deserve
it. You know, we gota chance to talk to you on the
court after you guys want on Sundayand Mary and I were just talking about
the joy that we saw from yourteam this week in Vegas. You know,
(13:24):
now that you're a day or tworemoved from winning it all, kind
of how how are you feeling aboutthings? I'm feeling great. You know,
this is like the main reason whyI came is to be a part
something greater, which obviously is beinga part of this team. It's one
thing to win with another thing tobe a part of a team and winning
along people you consider your sisters andlike families. So it's really just been
(13:45):
awesome. I'm just taking everything inone step at a time, and we
still have a lot of them takecare of, so, you know,
just try and take everything you whyI can. I know, Minyon,
A lot of people seem to besurprised by what you did on Sunday.
Those of us that have watched youplay for four years, it's certainly not
surprised. What do you say aboutthat, people that were surprised, I
(14:07):
mean, well, if you haven'tseen me play, I guess I would
be surprised too, because obviously I'mnot known from my outside shot. It
hasn't been like a thing that I'vebeen able to knock down this year,
and it's a lot of just confidenceand just believing yourself intill a big role
from my taste. So it's justreally about getting out of my head.
Um. I've always thought that I'mcapable of it, obviously proving that at
(14:30):
USC. So it's a matter ofjust being myself, taking the deep breath
and basketball simple when you you know, don't overthink it. So that's really
my motto. But I appreciate anyonethat's, you know, following now that
I've had a good game. Youknow, there's We've seen so many over
the last couple of years graduate transfers, you know, and how challenging is
it to sort of parachute into anew city, a new staff, a
(14:52):
new team, in a new system. Yeah, it's extremely difficult. I
think obviously it's worth the experience,but it's it's like, literally, you're
a freshman again. I went froma team where I was there for three
years and I was in an environmentI was comfortable, obviously obviously living in
California my whole life, and thengoing to University of Oregon where I was
(15:13):
a new phase of a program thatwas already well established, and then I'm
trying to learn their system, whichwas obviously different than my system for the
last three years. So it wasdifficult, but I've had a support of
my coaches and my teammates, andit hasn't always been easy, but I'm
for sure I'll at least the benefitsin the long run, you know.
I mean I want to ask youabout that that championship game, because you
(15:33):
know, you scored twenty one pointsin twenty eight minutes to go four or
five from three, and you talkabout the confidence and being able to watch
the shot go down. But asyou know, was the game plan to
have you take on more of ascoring role or was that just kind of
what the defense was given you andit sort of played out that way.
Yeah, I mean we didn't really. My coaches didn't really say going there
and you know shoot. I mean, they told me to go in there
(15:56):
and shoot, but they that wasn'tlike the main goal. Our main goal
was just to run our stuff.Coaches told us that we already have our
established identity obviously playing all these gamesso far, so just let the game
come to you, really, AndI saw an opportunity and I just try
and took advantage of it. AndI wasn't thinking when I was shooting,
and then once I hit the firstone, was kind of like okay,
like I got this, so Ijust kept shooting it. And yeah,
(16:18):
the defensives playing me that way, which is you know, their decision as
a team, but hope that continuityhits those shots so that it's not that
type of defensive they can guard us. Now, you guys have a team
where you don't have to necessarily alwaysgo in with a big plan because it's
kind of find who's hot, whetherit's Aaron Bully actually, and I saw
to Ruthy you off the bench,Taylor and Jazz and then Sabrina just does
(16:40):
Sabrina like things and sort of weavesthe whole thing together. Is that how
it feels to you out there?Yeah for sure. I mean we're all
talented, and one thing I feellike Organ struggled with last year was their
death and people not being able toplay in the postseason. So I really
think that's the case. Coach saidthat it's March madness and everybody's gonna step
(17:02):
up and it's gonna be a differentplayer sometimes on any different day. So
just be there for the opportunity whenit comes to you. So we're really
grateful that we have a talent likeour starting five and then deep deepfense that
can come in and also you know, score those points. So if you
have an off night, then youcan lean on you're underclassen, which is
not always heard of. Um Sothat's obviously amazing and our i mean our
team is just really really talented,So that's obviously a blessing. You know,
(17:25):
Kelly Graves gives you a lot ofcredit for helping change the defensive mindset
of your team. You arrived, you're playing with these guys. What did
you feel like their mindset was andhow how different is it now? Um?
Well, obviously Stanford's offense is oneof the best in the country,
being led by tchar Vanderbilt who's hadsuccess which her offense. So, I
(17:45):
mean, we really focus on defensebecause Oregon hasn't obviously been known for defense,
even via USC. I always jokewith the girls, I'm like,
have we always focus on defense likethis because when we've got to do guys,
we would Obviously you guys are reallygood a off so we can,
you know, attack you on defense. But it's really funny. Mark Campbell,
he's like in charge of our defense, and he takes a really serious
(18:07):
and he holds all accountables for it. So I've just seen the team develop
over the year, and it startswith practice, and I feel like I
can take a little bit of thecredit for it, but I won't take
all of it because it's really justa team, you know, hopping on
that bus and you know, focusingon that aspect of basketball. So it's
just really cool to see the team, you know, develop over like this
year in the short time that we'vehad together, and just to see it
(18:29):
all coming together in the postseason isreally cool. Well, you don't need
to take all the credit for it, but Kelly Gray, as Mary mentioned,
he definitely calls you out and creditsyou for changing the defensive mindset in
the tone on that team, andI think that's been one of the biggest
differences that we've seen, obviously onthe defense and side with you guys,
and then obviously your bench from whereit was a year ago. Kelly said,
that's something that's a big difference. As you guys now head into the
(18:49):
nc DOUBAA Tournament, I got toask you, you know, we I
think a lot of people feel likethis is one of the most special teams
we've ever seen, and men's basketballand led by one of the most you
know, special players, Sabrina hasbecome the face of college basketball. What
is it hard to kind of stepback and realize the moment that you guys
are in because it's you know,I know, you're focused on the task
(19:11):
at hand and winning one game ata time and all that has to be
true for you guys to get towhere you want to go. But what
is it like to be part ofthis thing right now? Minion? Yeah,
I think that we realize it,and especially in the game of the
season when we were like not wedidn't have a lot of time together and
we seat, you know, Upstateupset Team USA. I think that's when
we realize how special we were. But we try not to focus on it,
(19:33):
just because it's really easy for teamsto get in their head like,
oh, we're the talents and talentedwith this this game, which isn't the
case with basketball and for its becauseat any even day ever can be too
um So I don't think it's reallyhit us right now. I think one
baby will look back at it andsay like wow, like look at what
we had here, and obviously beinga part of something like that and so
special is just nothing short of ablessing. So yeah, I think we
(19:56):
realize it, but I don't thinkwe're like focusing on it yet, just
because we want to go all theway. So when we go all the
way, we can be like yeah, like you know, Mignona, really,
to me feels like there's been amajor change in the last couple of
weeks from you know, everything thathappened in February and just how heavy that
all was, and and and nowyou guys, you don't feel when watching
(20:18):
you play, there's not a burdenit. You guys are like just the
happiest team playing together. Yeah,it's the joyfulness when I watch you just
it just overwhelms me. Does itfeel different to you? You don't look
like a team like, oh mygod, everyone thinks we should win the
Natty. You know, it's like, no, we're gonna go do it
and we're gonna have fun doing it. Yeah, Like, um, it's
(20:38):
like a lot of pressure and stressbecause of the expectations that we do have,
but because of the bonds that we'vecreated outside of basketball. It's like
like going to work your sisters,Like yeah, it may be stressful,
but to have them to you know, ride ride for you on your back.
So it's been cool. Like Ihave really good relationships with my teammates
(20:59):
and they're close friends and the onesI go to when you know I'm happy
or I'm sad. So it's likeit's tough at times, but yeah,
we're close. We have bonds, and that's what great teams do, I
feel like, and sometimes great teamshave success but they don't have that connection.
But we have both. So that'salways cool to do, especially when
you're under the circumstances that we arehere. You know, Minion, just
to talk about you one more time. I just feel like no one talks
(21:23):
about that you're second in the NCAAin assist turnover ratio and that you've played
thirty two games this year and youhave thirty two turnovers. I mean when
I was in college, I couldhave thirty two turnovers in eight games.
Seriously, it could be like I'djust be spraying the ball all over creation,
just trying to make things happen. Those numbers are phenomenal, and yet
(21:44):
just there's nothing coming your way onit. How do you play thirty two
games at the level of competition youplay and only have thirty two turnovers.
Yeah, I don't always focus onit, Honestly, I just let the
game come to me. And whenI do turn the ball over, I
do hold myself to a higher standardjust because turnovers aren't great. I mean,
(22:04):
obviously, when you're a point guardor your guard, it's kind of
bound to happen. Sometimes you're tryingto thread the needle to you know,
one of your teammates. But Imean it's just cool to see the development
over the years. I remember havingeight turnovers I think is my career High
Ver Stanford my freshman or my sophomoreyear, and just you know, looking
at that and trying to glow fromthere and then just when the game comes
(22:26):
to you. Like I said,it's kind of easy when you have people
around you, like snipers and peoplewho are talented who could also you know,
catch the ball and even if thepass isn't perfect, they're still going
to you know, gather it.So I think obviously my teammates has made
that an easier adjustment for me.But yeah, it's pretty cool to not
have a lot of turnovers and tohave teams have to scout you that way.
(22:47):
So yeah, I'm to accomplishments thatI'm proud of. It's amazing and
one of the many impressive numbers. When you guys look at just your team
and individual stats, it's it's awesome. You know. We talk about taking
the bigger picture view of this isyou look back. If I'm not mistaken,
you had two ACL tears when youwere in high school as that Yeah,
so when when you just think aboutyour career, you know, I'm
(23:10):
sure that was that was tough times, especially right when you were start getting
to go. When you look backon everything that you have fought through and
overcome, and then going from USCto Oregon, just kind of where you
stand right now this moment in time, Like, how how would you describe
your journey? It's a journey thatis just crazy in my opinion, honestly,
(23:30):
going from my eighth grade year tomy high school year and carrying my
ACL, but being so young thatI didn't realize really like how deep and
serious that injury was, and thencoming back my first game in the state
championship game and then caring my otherACL, and it's having that setback,
But honestly, I just follow itas a blessing in this guy, Um
I was a basketball player before that, but after those surgeries, I really
(23:52):
found my meaning and my purpose andI really found what makes me and drives
me today. Really like that tenaciousenergy and that fast paced energy because it's
like you lose everything that you loveand then you have that feeling of knowing
what it feels like it's not havinganymore, so just having that drive and
that energy, and I really feellike it's really shaped me to who I
am today. And a lot ofpeople look at me and say that's crazy
(24:15):
for like, you know, seeingthat's a blessing, But honestly, I
think it's a blessing of dis guise. And you know, sometimes injuries happen,
but you always have to realize thatsomething. Sometimes life shows you,
you know, adversity and you haveto get through it, but always to
look at the bigger picture. Andthen just being at USC, and I
love that experience and I'll always bein Trojan m And I always look back
and said I miss being at USCjust because the experience I did have here
(24:37):
with the program and then being inthe school with you know, Sabrina and
Sought too and Ruthie and these greatthat will greate that will be a legends
one day. It's just really amazingand I'm just seeing my life come to
a full circle. So it's reallyjust a blessing. And I pray to
God every day and just think himbecause I kind of knew that this is
kind of my destiny to be onchampionship team like this and to see all
(25:02):
coming together, I can be moreproud. And how my family, my
friends beside me to go through theexperience is amazing. You know, Mignon,
You're giving me goosebumps me too.My last question is, you know,
it takes a lot of courage toto make major changes in life and
to sit at sc and and andto dream big and say I'm I'm gonna
(25:22):
make this change and then make thatchange happen. I think is it is
inspiring. It's inspiring for me andI and I would have to think inspiring
for others, not just in acollege setting of oh I want to change
or whatever, but just in yourlife to just accept that not really it's
a flying leap. You don't knowif this thing is gonna work. Maybe
you'll play, maybe you won't,maybe you'll be accepted. You really don't
(25:44):
know. Tell me about just whatgave you the courage to say I'm gonna
try this. Yeah, just whatyou said. Kind of just to dream
big, And that's kind of beenone of my mottels, um just to
dream big and no dream is toobig, kind of like what Nike had
in their campaign of their dreaming.Yeah. I just just to dream big
(26:07):
and to never not bet on yourself. And I was in a situation where
I was very comfortab about USC,and you know, I was the go
to player, and you know,I kind of could you know, I
was. I was a scorer, but I wanted to do something beyond myself
and I wanted to be a partof something that one day I looked back
and say like, wow, Iwas a part of that. Yeah,
(26:29):
yeah, I'll do that with USC. But I wanted to be a part
of a championship team, a teamthat brought championships back to their community.
And I knew that Organ was goingto have that, and so I kind
of knew it was kind of destinedme to go to Organ. I kind
of knew once we played them,I was like, wow, like what
if might say left, Like whatif I could come and fill those roles?
And I know they need defense,so what if I could come here
(26:51):
and do that? And they wereall a lot of questions. But at
the end of the day, Ibet on myself and I know that everything's
happening for a reason and everything's fallingin the place the way that is supposed
to the way my life's supposed togo. So this is really crazy.
I've been coming to a full circle. Um, but yeah, just stream
big and always always bowing yourself. That is some of the best advice that
(27:12):
I think you can give. Andthe last thing for me, Mignon,
I gotta know what's in the waterin Eugene right now, because there's some
there's a lot of special stuff goingon. First Pack twelve school organis to
win the regular season conference title infootball, men's basketball, and women's basketball
in the same year. So Ijust got to ask you what, what's
(27:33):
kind of the vibe in the athleticdepartment there right now and what's the connection
between the programs, because I imagineit's it's pretty special. Yeah, it's
pretty special. And Eugene is justa city that deserves a championship. I
feel, you know, like theyare such riders and their fans and the
Duck Nation are so strong and theysupport you. If you are in Vegas
(27:57):
this weekend, you probably felt alittle bit of that gone to any of
our games first anyone this year.Um, they support you, they come
out, they cheer you on,they're they're there for you, whether you
win, are you losing. That'ssomething that our teams and our players have
been built on and that's the foundationthat's carried us throughout all of our seasons.
So yeah, congrats to women's basketball, men's basketball, and football,
(28:18):
but it's really the fans who havedriven us. And so I just hope
that we bring back a national championshipand hopefully our men's team can do something
great too. Um In our footballteam brought home to lose ball. So
I just feel like it's a vibethat's you know, just proud and just
loving and they bring all of thatand so that really drives us US players.
(28:41):
Yeah, it was. It wasamazing that you're watching you guys,
uh, you know, with theconfetti streaming down and take a picture with
the with the trophy and shout planon the speakers. They look over and
Rob Mullins, your athletic director, just has the biggest smile. I have
ever seen last across the space AndI said, does this ever get old?
And he said, no, no, this is obviously Oh yeah.
Ever ever, well, we wehave loved watching you and your team this
(29:06):
year and we cannot wait to seewhat you guys are going to do in
the ncable A tournament. Um.We hope to be able to see in
New Orleans. And I just wishyou the very best, Minion, and
thanks so much for making some timefor us this horn and than for my
last four years. Always. Howawesome is she? Yeah? I mean
(29:26):
does it all? She's very impleasantall. I just gotta say too.
I gotta give you a shout out, Mary, because you in our pregame
interview on Sunday, your player towatch was Minion More And man was it?
Was it? Ever? She wasjust phenomenal in that game. Couldn't
have been couldn't be more happy forher and great to hear her perspective.
She's got um, she's got alot of it. So we talked last
(29:47):
week Mary on this podcast about whetheror not it matters if Oregon is the
number one overall seed UH in theNCABAI Tournament as long as they're going to
be the number one seed in Portlanddoesn't matter, and you said, yeah,
it matters to Kelly Graves. Itturns out you are correct, because
I asked him about whether he thinksthey are deserving of that number one overall
seed right after they beat Stanford thechampionship game by thirty three points, and
(30:11):
here was his answer, we'll playit for you. I don't know about
any of that. All I knowis in that top sixteen rebuild, this
is our tenth win against teams inthe top six team, five of those
on the road, two of themneutral. That's a pretty damn good resume,
Ana that I don't care. We'llplay anywhere. So there you have
(30:36):
it. I think, you know, making a case for his team.
And again we mentioned it. They'reup to number two in the A People
this week, but they're twelve andone against ap top twenty five teams,
seven and one against top ten teamsthis season. Mary's what's your gut on
where they end up on selection Monday. Yeah, I think I think they'll
be the number two, number one. I think they're deserving of the number
(30:59):
one, number one. You're exactlyright. Ten wins over top sixteen teams
more than the other three top teamstop number one seeds projected combined, and
five of those ten victories on theroad and two neutral, so only three
of those who were in front ofthe crazy crowds in Eugene right at the
(31:19):
MKA. And it's just quite astatement and the way they've done it.
But the key thing for me forOregon, if fans are interested in seeing
them play in Portland, we're gonnaanticipate they win that first and second round
game. I would be online gettingtickets at the Moda Center for that regional
like today, because that place isgoing to sell it when people finally are
like, oh yeah, that's comingup, honey, you get your ticket,
(31:41):
you know. I mean, likeif you want to go, look
at your calendar and get on it, because you're gonna want to be there
and you don't want to be standingoutside saying, oh how much do you
want for those tickets? You wantto be in that building. It's gonna
be one of the hottest tickets intown, no doubt about it. Yeah,
I mean I'm juiced. There's notmuch more you can say on this
Oregan squad. And now they havean opportunity to go, you know,
(32:05):
finish the unfinished business that Sabrina cameback for, so looking forward to seeing
what's next for them. We mentionedthat we have a second guest on the
podcast today and before we welcome Calcoach Sharmon smith On, I wanted to
play a SoundBite from Adia Barnes. She came over and joined us on set
after the Bears lost to Arizona inDay number two in the quarterfinal round,
(32:30):
and we you know, this wasunprompted. We were asking her about her
team and she kind of stopped usand said, I want to talk about
Sharmon and we'll play that for youand then welcome Charman. And I think
Sharmon's done a phenomenal job. Ithink that when you're a team fights fights
for you, Tilaverian, that meansyou have their hearts and your coach them
and they played for you. AndI know Sharmon we were teammates in the
(32:52):
w NBA. She's going to bevery successful because of who she is and
she was a blue collar type player, so they've played dislike her, so
I would tell her to stay thecourse. Not getting the stourage. It
doesn't matter how many packs On winsthat you won the first year because you're
gonna recruit and you're gonna get better. A players is gonna want to come
play for her because she's been atevery level. Absolutely love that insight from
(33:13):
Adia Barnes on set with us,and that was something the support from the
other coaches in the commerence with somethingthat Sharmon Smith spoke about in her post
game comments and the head coach ofthe cow Bears joining us. Now,
Sharmon, I know you're on theroad at the airport. Coaches never get
to rest out on the recruiting trail, so we appreciate your time. And
before we kind of dive into theseason, I just would love to get
(33:35):
your thoughts on Adia's words and thesupport that you felt from a lot of
the other women coaches in the conference, because it's something that I think you
spoke about quite eloquently after your gameagainst Arizona. Yeah, for sure,
and thanks for having me. Youknow, it just really is a phenomenal
conference of novel group of head coachesand just to have the support, the
(33:59):
text messages, be encouraging handshakes, you know after a loss that I got
from from almost every coach in thisconference, was really encouraging for me and
help me know like you're doing theright thing, you know, say the
course, and so many people wouldsay, gosh, we watch your team
on film and they played so hardand you know, keep it up,
(34:19):
and I love the fight in yourteam, and you know, I would
ask our assistants like, i't mejust saying that, like do they have
to say that, and they're like, no, no, they totally need
it, you know, And itwas just a good feeling to have people
be so encouraging. You know,Sharman, your team this year in the
regular season pack twelve three victories, all of them on the road, all
of them on Sunday, So thatmeans you're coming off losses. You know,
(34:45):
I understand what your team's all about. Just tell folks what your team's
all about. To be able todo that, and the toughest conference in
the United States, yeah, youknow, we we took the licks and
we just kept getting back up andand the goal was to together. We
knew that we were going to beout match and some uh some games,
(35:06):
and we knew that we were youngand inexperience, but we knew that we
had a lot of heart and wetalked a lot about how your character is
most defined during those times of whichthings aren't going your way, times of
adversity, and we wanted to showpeople who we are, you know,
what we're made of. And it'seasy to fight and have fun when you're
winning games, but we proved thatthat we care about one another and that
(35:30):
we're committed to this program and thatwe can fight and have fun and battle
even though the outcome isn't always whatwe want. And you know those Saturday
practices, you know, after aloss, it's like, okay, we
get to run it back. Andthe cool thing about our conference is that
you're running it back against another rankedopponent, and so it's another opportunity to
try to do something special. Andwe were able to do that, you
(35:52):
know some some days with a shortprep. And I'm proud of our teams.
Yeah, excuse me as well, you should be. I think you
know you talked about it, butthe belief that your team has in you
is um it's special, and youcan see it, and you can see
it in the way that they talkabout you, in the way they respond
to you. And I remember,I'll never forget when you came over to
the set for your postgame interview afteryou guys ups at ASU on day one,
(36:14):
they all it was just like amob scene. They came over and
we're just hugging you, and itwas it was a really cool moment.
And I just got to ask,I think that that them believing in you
is such a big piece of beingable to be successful and being able to
stick together even though you knew itwas going to be hard this year.
So how did you kind of instillthat belief in them? What what's the
key to that player coach relationship.Well, you know, I talk a
(36:37):
lot about me not asking them todo anything that I'm not willing to do
myself, you know, And um, you know Ida mentioned it. You
know I did play, uh,you know, in the Pact, in
the Pact ten at the time forStanford, And you know, I've been
on a team that's been really successfulin one conference championships and been to the
(36:57):
Final four, and I've played inthe w NBA, And so what I'm
demanding of these players is only thingsthat I know I was willing to give
to my coach. And I thinkthey see how hard our staff works every
single day and the commitment that wehave for them, and I really try
to be there for them in everyway that I can so that when I
(37:17):
say, hey, we need onefreaking stop, let's go, they know
that they that I have their backand they're willing to give me that same
type of commitment in doing whatever itis by asking to do on the court.
You know, Sharman, this yearan exceptional group. A freshman entered
the conference and that's what a conferenceneeds to continue to be great. But
you're a freshman. I mean therewere times I was calling games there were
(37:38):
three and four freshmen on the floor. I mean, it was kind of
mind boggling what you guys accomplished.Tell us about your freshman on your team.
But the freshman and this conference andwhat it means to the future man,
this freshman group is phenomenal. Andbut the energy that they brought,
the competitiveness, and just their abilityto be a good teammate and you know,
(38:01):
to listen to their seniors, tolisten to their coach. Um,
it really was special. And Ithink you saw a lot of freshman talent
around the conference. You know,Um, you know that that's all freshman
team for the past twelve is reallytalented and this conference is going to continue
to be one of the best conferencesin women's basketball. And I think,
you know, Cal basketball is goingto you know, climb up the ladder
(38:23):
in the conference because of the talentedgroup of freshman And I've got this this
post plan for my Instagram today, which is Dalen Brown at the free throw
line, um, during the technicalthat we had against Arizona, and standing
behind her at half courts are thefour freshmen and um, it's you know,
it's it's it's Obi Wan and theyoung Jedi Knights. That's that's my
(38:43):
captain. That's going to be postedtoday. Um. But it's such a
cool photo and um, it justrepresents so much of you know, what
this journey was with this young groupfollowing you know, the veteran leadership that
we had well and I know thatthat you're excited and Bears fans are excited
about the group you also have comingin next year. Their ranks the seventh
best recruiting class in the nation.I'm curious, a you know, how
(39:06):
do you sell your program when you'reon the recruiting trail to to and get
those players to be excited to cometo Berkeley and play. And also now
that yere I know, back onthe recruiting trail again, getting those two
wins over ASU in Arizona to kindof close out the season, does that
help sell your vision at all?I think it's great for recruiting, you
know, those two wins at thetime of year, you know, to
(39:27):
get those victories in March. Youknow, the text messages that I received
from recruits during that span was reallyencouraging. And you know, I'm doing
home visits right now, and themessage is like, I believe in myself.
I believe in this program and whatwe're building. We talked about the
number five recruiting class coming in joiningyou know, the fourth rushman that we
(39:51):
have right now, and what agreat foundation that is and that coming in,
like you don't have to do allthe work. We've got pieces in
place to keep this thing rolling, and we're just asking for this twenty twenty
one class just to elevate things evenmore, you know, But really,
like, when it comes down toit, what I learned in this first
year when I first got the job, there was so much to talk about,
(40:14):
can you keep this player? Isthis player going to come back?
Oh, you're losing this player, this player's transferring, and and it was
so stressful, and I'm like,oh, what are we gonna do if
so and so leaves were so andso doesn't want to come here. And
finally I had to settle myself downand just be like, look, you
have players that want to be hereand are willing to do what you want
(40:34):
them to do, and that's whatyou need. And if people aren't willing
to be here, I'm not gonnabeg I'm not gonna, you know,
try to be something I'm not.And I step into these home visits and
I'm very genuine, very authentic, and very transparent and that's the only way
I know how to be. AndI think we will attract the right type
of student athletes, you know, through that process. And I'm really excited
(40:57):
about what the future holds. Whenyou look at the success that Adia has
had at Arizona over the past coupleof years. I mean both you and
Adia never had been head coaches. And when you make that move, that
one set over you know, somepeople think you can do it, some
people don't, and you both haveshown Wow, you know, these two
really got it got it going.Well, what do you look at Adia
(41:19):
and learn from and get inspired by. I mean, she's done such a
great job. And you know,I told my team about how when we
played her at Stanford, she's inArizona and she was such a great post
player. She's front the floor andget lay up against us, and our
post players charged into them out ofthe game because they couldn't guard a VI.
You know, she's such a competitor. And you know what she said
(41:42):
about me and how that tran translatesover into the coaching, it's the same
for her, Like she's she's justa winner, she's competitives, she's doing
the right things. And I havesaid, like, now, you know,
Adida only had this number of wins, you know, in her first
couple of years, Like why can'tthat be us? You know, um,
you know, we got to findour Aaron McDonald, you know,
like who is that player that justten sends things? And I think,
(42:07):
you know, what she's been ableto do with the fans and get so
many people in that arena, it'sjust incredible. And I do think that's
that's something that I learned from andI'm inspired by, and I hope that
that can be the same type ofgrowth that we have at Cow Sherman.
You've been involved with the PAC twelfthconference a long time. How tough is
it preparing for these games a weekin, week out? You know,
(42:29):
it's fun. It's fun, LikeI'm a competitor and every single game is
like, oh gosh, okay, you're playing against Arizona. Well we can't
relax. Now you have Arizona State, and wow, look what Colorado was
able to do, like, youknow, almost two wins over Stanford,
just close games like that. Imean, I think the coolest thing about
our conference is that it's tough fromtop to bottom. So, yes,
(42:51):
Oregon is dominant, and you know, I think they're a great natural championship
contender, but you know, we'reno chump, and we handle ourselves in
the non conference against teams like Arkansasand Kentucky. Like where would those teams
be if they were playing in thePact twelve, you know, And so
I really appreciate the fact that everysingle night you really don't know what's going
to happen, and it's so competitive, and that's what makes you better.
(43:15):
Playing against good competition every single dayis how you grow and how you reach
your full potential, and that's whyI think, you know, it's a
no brainer to play in the Pacttwelve. I love that Charman, And
you mentioned Oregon, and I thinkobviously that one of the big storylines now
as we look forward to the NCAAtournament is are these ducks gonna run the
table and win a national championship? And I guess I would just you know,
(43:37):
you've played them, you've seen themup close. Do you think a
they have what it takes to winthe whole thing? And also it's it's
been a while since the pactwel wasone a national championship ninety two that Stanford
was the last team to do it. Do you think it's important for the
conference that the Pact twelve wins?An Eddie, I think it'd be huge
for the conference, you know,And I think Oregon definitely has the capability,
(44:00):
you know, um, And whenyou get to that point, you
know, as you as we've seenwith you know, the Yukon losses at
the Buzzer and SuDS like you getto the final four, you get there,
it's it's just you know, doesn'tfall your way, are you know,
um? Is it your day?So to speak? I think they're
they're maybe you know, two orthree teams that have that ability where you
(44:22):
can say, yep, I putmy money on them to win an actual
championships, and Oregon is definitely oneof them. Um, you know,
you gotta stay healthy and um,you know you got to make the right
plays and and and and show upevery night for six teams straight. Now
it's you know, it's win orgo home. So UM, we'll see
what happens. I'm pulling for allof the Pact swelve teams. You know,
(44:42):
obviously we haven't seen a bracket yet, but I'd love to have more
than one pactwelve team in the finalfour. You know, Um, we
can do that. Uh, there'sreally a lot of talent out there.
So I'm excited to watch this tournamenton fully, Yeah, I think no
one would doubt that it's very possiblewe could get two teams in the final
four, and we're we're looking forwardto seeing what lays ahead. Also for
your team, We're excited to seeyou guys next year. We really appreciate
(45:06):
the time you gave us this morning. I know you're at the airport and
I know you've got a flight tocatch, so we'll let you go do
that. Good luck on the recruitingtrail, Sharmon, and we'll definitely look
forward to catching up soon. Butwe appreciate you hopping on the pod this
morning. Okay, yeah, anytime, Thanks so much. I think it's
pretty obvious, Mary, that it'snot going to be all that long before
Calberts or back knocking on the doorat the top of the conference. Sharmon
(45:27):
is a special coach. She's cerebral, and she's obviously getting some big time
players coming in and obviously the onesthey're already there believing her in a big
way. So appreciate her hopping onwith us as she was running between terminals
at the airport this morning, outon the recruiting trail. All right,
so before we wrap this thing up, we expect to have eight teams playing
in the postseason. Obviously, sixof them will be in the NC douab
(45:50):
A Tournament. And Mary, you'refeeling good about Colorado and USC in the
w n I t Absolutely. USCfinished the season sixteen and thirteen and they
it looks like they'll get the automaticbid to the w NAT and then Colorado
with a sixteen and thirteen record lookingin an at large bid. They've both
submitted bids to host first round gamesand they're gonna be practicing, which means
(46:12):
you're optimistic if you're out there runningaround and doing your things. So that
that says a lot for Mark Trackand Jr. Paying big step forward for
both those programs. Yeah, andI think it's great because it's important to
remember obviously what the n I Tdid for Arizona last year and UCLA a
couple of years ago. I mean, you get some postseason experience like that,
even though it's not the you know, postseason tournament you ultimately want to
(46:35):
be playing, and it can doa lot for a program in terms of,
you know, building a foundation andkind of getting that experience for those
players and a taste of winning somebig postseason games. So looking forward to
seeing that. A reminder that SelectionMonday is March sixteenth, at four o'clock
on ESPN, they will reveal thebracket, hopefully no one will reveal it
(46:55):
before that like last year, andthen at six o'clock we're going to have
our Selection Monday show special on PACtwelve network. You, Mary, Colleen
and I will be in the saddleand we'll hear from hopefully all six coaches
will be playing in the Insider thetournament, So looking forward to that.
Always enjoy that show. It's chaosat its finest in life television. All
(47:17):
right, before we go, Mary, what do you got for the best
segment of the day? And nowfrom Murphy's Law. You know, it's
been such a sensational year in thePAC twelve conference this year, but I
think it's always you know, it'simportant to appreciate the past. And tonight
(47:37):
on HBO they're previewing a new show, Women of Troy. It's an our
documentary on Cheryl Miller and Cynthia Cooperand what they accomplished in the eighties at
USC when they won two national titlesand Kim Mulki make some statements. Gino
Orima will be featured as well alot of Hall of Famers and WNBA players
(47:58):
and just the greatness of what you'regoing to see is the greatness of Cheryl
Miller. She had a knee injuryat twenty two, so no one saw
her play in the w NBA.But there's some people that say before Cheryl
and after Cheryl, BC and ACand we've had some great players since Cheryl,
when you think about Diana Trassi,Lisa Leslie, and now we have
Sabrina. And so when you're talkingabout the greatest that I've ever played the
(48:22):
game, Cheryl right now I thinkis holding the gold standard and Sabrina is
in that conversation. So you've gotthe past tonight on HBO. Check that
out if you've got HBO, oryou've got a friend that has HBO,
or you have a way of findingit. And then we have the present
that is this PAC twelve season andthis PAC twelve tournament and rolling forward to
the NCAA tournament. And then there'sthe future. And I saw the future
(48:45):
sitting in the stands behind Chris deBlanc and me, and that was Jalen
Sharad from Colorado who stayed for acouple of days after Colorado lost in the
tournament and sat in the stands towatch, to learn, to absorb,
and to say this is where Iwant to be. I want to take
my team forward in all the greatfreshman Elisa Peely, fran Believe and everybody
(49:07):
else that is going to take thisconference beyond where Sabrina and this crew has
taken it. And I can't waitfor the future because the past has been
glorious and we're in the middle ofan incredible present. But the past,
the present, in the future,it's pretty awesome in this conference. I
think that was a big theme thatsort of developed. You know, it
was obviously we talked about it allyear long, but it was so palpable
(49:30):
the last four days in Vegas watchingthese freshmen. I mean Kylan Crocker at
Cal, the game that she hadfor them to upset ASU in that second
half, she goes off for twentyyou know, Elisa Peelee is just unbelievable.
Chrisma Osborne at UCLA. You cango on and on down the list,
and it's the one good thing forus sitting in the chairs that we're
in. Mary's that obviously it's youknow this, this Oregon squad is one
(49:53):
of the best teams ever assembled inthe Pac twelve with basketball. But you
know, we got a lot ofbig time talent, you know, and
the future is certainly bright for thisconference. So I'm I'm excited to see
how it all plays out and certainlyexcited for what's to come in the future.
Before we sign off, I gotto give a big shout out because
(50:13):
we had I think one of thebest tournament coverages from Pactwealth Network perspective the
last four days in Las Vegas, and there were so many people who made
that happen. Obviously all the peopleon the air, Mary You and Krista
and Anne and Tammy calling the games, and then Elise and Roz with me
on set, and Kate Scott workinglike crazy, and Jill Savage on the
sidelines, But there are so manyincredible people behind the scenes that I just
(50:37):
want to give a shout out toColleen. Obviously you're the leader of the
band, but we had Ari andChristine and Ross and everybody behind the scenes
that put in. I can't eventell you how many hours to bring you
the you know, the unbelievable coveragethat we were able to bring you over
the four days at Mandalay Bay.It doesn't just happen by accident. It
