Yeah, hello, allow me tointroduced the podcast of that highest class of
Women twelve. Fuck the rankings ifyou needed to prove numbers net for lying
even to while speaking the truth ofthe calm, the chaos, who bring
in the passion and the player ofthe year who'll be a crown shad begin,
Let's get the cracking. What's happening? And Mary Murphy actually Adams said,

(00:23):
yeah, we back again. Yea, we are back again. And
I woke up with a giant smileon my face this morning because we have
a lot to talk about on thepodcast. I haven't been this fired up
for a podcast in a while.Mary Murphy calling Farrell Ashley Adamson back in
the saddle with you for the finalpodcast of the regular season. Guys,
Yeah, I'm fired up, butI woke up reflective and kind of quiet.

(00:45):
So we have the calumn in thechaos, and normally I'm just feeling
the chaos because it was a crazy, crazy weekend, but I'm feeling reflective
about just what we saw yesterday andthe impact it had on me and just
watching social So I think that's goodthat we're coming from different places. Yeah,
I know, and I think thatthere's there's so much to dive into.

(01:06):
This is one of those weeks whereI felt like we needed a daily
podcast. So let's just go throughsome of the highlights. Obviously that the
biggest story is Brini and Escu andthe organ ducks and everything that went on
for her yesterday, and we're goingto dive deep into that. But I
just because we haven't spoken to,you know, our listeners since last Tuesday,
let me just run through real quickwhat happened Thursday. Satu Sabii declares

(01:30):
for the draft. Mary she does, and I don't think anyone was really
surprised about it. There's been alot of discussion. We expect her to
be a top three pick. She'sjust that good. We saw that last
night. Tarn and Stanford just saywe are going not gonna let Ruthie impact
this ballgame. Ruthie has four points, took two shots. We never see

(01:51):
that sat twenty seven points. Shegoes four to seven from three nine rebounds.
I mean her satunas was on display. She was a big adjective.
I like that. Yeah, andso she she you know, that's gonna
be certainly a big story. Andshe said one of the reasons she told
you that she wanted to declare whenshe did is because she was going to
take part in the Senior Day festivitiesthis weekend and didn't want to steal the

(02:13):
spotlight from you know, Sabrina andRuthie. And I think also it just
takes a lot of stress away.We saw what happened at the end of
last year, where every day it'slike, what's gonna happen, Tobrinia gonna
stay, You're gonna You're gonna stayhere, you gonna I mean, that's
gone, and now they can justfocus on playing. And that's a really
good thing, no doubt about it. All right. So Friday, Steph
Curry shows up at Hospitalia in Berkeleywith his daughters to see you and Kate

(02:34):
Scott right, you know, hewas parking for a while and finally he
showed up, which was really reallygood. But the place was buzzing,
The place was packed. It wasalmost like a mini Matt. I mean,
there were a lot of Oregon fansthere and it was a tremendous scene
and it was a whole lot offun. And then Sabrina had never had
a triple double against the Bay Areateams, and there she goes. There
she goes her twenty fifth career tripledouble. It was special. Look cot

(02:58):
in there by the way. Itwas so hot, you know. We
talked to Aaron Boley after the gameand I said, and we had a
shot of her on the bench shewas sweating, and I said it during
the broadcast, it felt like aSummer League game game in Chicago, like
at the Park District on the beach. You know, You're just like,
oh my god, it is sohot. And it just was like,
you know, winter has departed thebay and it just was we were all

(03:21):
just you know, couldn't take enoughclothes off. It was awesome, still
beyond TV, as we like tosay. Aaron Bowley was nails from three
in that game. Ruthie Hubard becamethe second all time leading score in organ
history behind Sabrina in that game.It was obviously a memorable broadcast and a
memorable win. So then on Sunday, for the first time in the history

(03:42):
of the conference and only the secondtime ever, three unranked teams upset three
ranked teams on the same day.Colorado upsets Arizona, Utah gets ASU,
and Washington upsets UCLA and Mary thecommon nominator. There was what Senior Day,
Yes, every up that was onSenior Day for the winning team,
and how I mean, just howawesome is that it was? And we're

(04:03):
going to talk more about Senior Daylater in the podcast, but Senior Day
to me is just like bring twoboxes of Kleenex, one for each chand
because you're just the emotion of thestudent athletes, the emotion of the coaches,
the fans, just that moment. It was some of the some of
these Senior Days were just off thecharts and it was so inspiring. And

(04:25):
one thing that bothered me about Sundaywas that as the upset started coming through
or the reactions of some of thefolks that I heard from, was like,
Oh, this is just terrible.Arizona is losing. This is just
terrible Arizona State. This is justus. I'm like, good grief,
this is not terrible. Colorado likeis fired up, like they've lost all

(04:46):
these close games. Utah has allthese kids and their seniors rose up and
then no, this is awesome. And Washington at home like you know,
bea Ucla they had just beat USCyou know, they swept it home.
Look, no, this is like, clearly you haven't coached a team and
you're you know, like desperate tolike just win games. Like like it's

(05:08):
like the only people that have tohave something to play for are the top
teams. Everyone else is just likeBoughder for the top four. Like,
no, that's not what this isabout about. Competition doesn't matter what your
record is. You step between thelines, You're like, you just want
to beat them. You don't care. It's like it's the most important thing.
So I just celebrated those victories.I mean, I feel bad for

(05:28):
the schools that lost, but youknow what play better on this day.
It was their day. And yeah, I was fired up about it.
There's no doubt about that. AndI think that's well said. And Amber
mel Goes, by the way,one of those seniors. She was the
Pact twelve Player of the Week andshe is our guest day on the podcast.
We're gonna talk with her and justa little bit. But before we
get there, we got we gottaspend some time talking about Sabrini and Escu

(05:49):
and what yesterday was for her, because I think this was a day and
a performance that we're going to betalking about for a long, long,
long time. So for those whomay maybe didn't know, let's just walk
through Sabrina's day. She goes downto la on Sunday night. On Monday,
she gives a beautiful speech at Kobeand Gianna Bryant's memorial at the Staple

(06:10):
Center. We're gonna hear a snippetof that in a minute. But then
she flies back to the Bay Areaand has a historic performance her twenty six
triple double against Stanford. And thenshe becomes the first ever player in Stable
history man or woman, D one, D two, D three that has
ever gotten two thousand points a thousandrebounds and a thousand assists. The date

(06:31):
two twenty four twenty That is Gianna'snumber, Kobe's number, and her number.
It's like a movie, Mary,Yeah, and someone's going to make
a movie about this, aren't they. Um. I was actually hoping she
wasn't going to get that rebound sothat we could have it on Friday on
the network. But it was anepic performance. Triple doubles in a row

(06:55):
Friday Sunday, to do it infront of her family, to do it,
yeah, yesterday, after what shehad just experienced. And you go
back to the memorial and we talkedearlier today. Vanessa Bryant could have invited
anybody in the world to speak, anyone in the world. She could have
had her people call and they wouldhave been in La to speak on that

(07:19):
platform. Performers Beyonce, Christina Aguilaraand Alicia Keys, amazing speakers, Shack
Michael Jordan, Rob Polenka, Kobe'sformer agent and his best friend, Diana
Tarassi. The only coach who spoke, Gina Oriema and Sabrina. That's who

(07:39):
was up there. Twenty thousand peoplein the building. They kept flashing all
these pictures of former NBA grades, current NBA grades, their wives, just
anyone in the world could have couldhave been there, and Sabrina, Diana
and Gino were there in speaking. It was overwhelming to me what Vanessa's message

(08:00):
was, and that is how importantthis was and how important Gigi was in
her future. And I thought KellyGraves said it best. I don't know
many people who could do what Sabrinadid today. Amen, my knees would
have been I would have. Idon't know how any I mean, look
what Jimmy Kimmel did, I mean, he was he was like bawling.
Michael. Michael Jordan was like saying, I'm another min Like just take your

(08:22):
pick, here we go. AndSabrina was just up there. She was
eloquent, as was Diana Tarassi. And and we should mention too, after
Vanessa it went Diana Tarassi, Sabrinaand Genoormama. Those were the that was
Those were the first three speakers thatshe wanted to have after she and by
the way too, I mean,we could do a whole hour and a

(08:43):
half on Vanessa Brant and the strengththat she showed yesterday in that moment.
We don't have time to articulate allof that. But for those of you
who didn't see the celebration of Kobeand Gigi at the Stable Center, it
was beautiful and I think that servicedid what every memorial tries to do.
It celebrated who they each were individuallythrough you know, just some incredible stories

(09:03):
as well as some sort of everydayanecdotes. So it felt like we kind
of all got to learn a littlebit more about who they wore, and
that, to me at least, was really meaningful. But in case you
didn't get to see Sabrina speech,we did want to play a portion of
it for you. Now, whicheverschool she would come to choose, it
didn't matter if I represented the presentof the woman's game. Gigi was the

(09:24):
future and Kobe knew it. Sowe decided to build the future together.
I wanted to be a part ofthe generation that changed basketball for Gigi and
her teammates were Being born female didn'tmean being born behind, where greatness wasn't
divided by gender. You have toomuch to give to say silent. That's
what he said, That's what hebelieved. That's what he lived through Gigi,

(09:46):
through me, through his investment inwomen's basketball. That was his next
great act. A girl dad.Basketball in many ways was just a metaphor.
I still text them even though he'snot here. Thank you for everything.
The rest is for you. Resteasy, my guy. His vision
for me was way bigger than myown. He was giving me the blueprint

(10:07):
he was given Gigi, the sameblueprint. He united us made their light
forever shine. Kobe and Gigi,I'll love you forever. Thank you.
There are a couple of things thatstuck out to me and what she said.
One of the things was she mentioned, you know, Kobe always said

(10:28):
to be your best when you don'tfeel your best, and we should mention
that it came out yesterday that thatSabina had the flu and did all of
that yesterday with the flu, didn'tneed anything before the game, was feeling
under the weather and went out andjust bawled out in the way that truly
honored I thought Kobe and everything thathe stood for. And then the way
that one of the things she saidwhen she closed out was actually my favorite
part. She said, I askeach of you, every girl, dad,

(10:50):
every human here with a voice anda platform and a heart to shine
for us, for our sport, where he once did invest in us with
the same passion, love and drivelike he did his own daughter. And
Mary, I just love that sheused that moment in that room and all
the millions of people watching on TVto ask for that, because to me
it was it was perfect well andto me it was really sort of Kobe

(11:13):
speaking through her like that she feltthat that's what he was doing, so
let's it was. She was justpreaching his words. You can, by
the way, if you want tolisten to her whole speech, you can
find it unpackdash twelve dot com.And last thing on Sabrina, and then
we can talk about that that gamea little bit more. But she wrote
this incredible letter on the player's tributethat came out yesterday, and again,

(11:33):
if you haven't read it, theseconds that you're done listening to this podcast,
go read it. The thing thatstruck me about it is that I
think very few people, athletes orotherwise. I'm not just talking about athletes,
but very people are able to articulatethe big picture in the moment.
It's easy to be reflective on theback end, but she is doing that
right now. Sabrina is seeing everything, she's understanding, she's acknowledging, and

(11:56):
she's articulating this moment she's in andit's unbelievable. I mean, she's it
really is. It's just I wasreading it and I'm listening to her yesterday
and I'm watching her and I'm justthinking, she's it's like almost transcendent.
I don't want to, you know, be cheesy, but it's amazing to
me. Yeah, it is.And then when you think that she arrived
at the arena an hour before thegame, didn't feel like she could eat,

(12:16):
and we know how ritualize she is, so she had never missed a
shoot around before. I know itsounds like making a big deal about Sabrina.
She's worth making a big deal about. I mean, it's what she's
doing is it's beyond almost what's humanlypossible to do that and then step on

(12:37):
the floor when everything that Stanford's tryingto do is stop her. Don't let
her get that triple double, don'tlet her get double nothing, just get
out there and make her work foreverything. But she put a show on
last night, and I'm sure she'sas tired as she can be emotionally and
mentally. I mean for any ofus as just people. You know how
you feel when someone close to youpasses away and you go to this service

(13:00):
the next day, you're just you'reyou're just so you're just physically and mentally
exhausted. And so an important weekfor her just to recover because another emotions
coming, and that's senior weekend atHaylem in front of sell out crowds and
more people who want autographs and wantto touch her and want to talk to
her. And it's just amazing. And Kelly talks a lot about this that

(13:20):
everywhere they go, you know, there's people that want autographs and jerseys and
little girls that want pictures, andshe's a she's a celebrity as a senior.
Well she's now a graduate student incollege. And it's it's a lot
of responsibility, a lot of weightthat she's carrying. I thought her teammates
did just a beautiful job of risingup and doing everything they could last night.

(13:41):
It was an important game. Theywere playing for a share of of
what they feel as their championship. That's the PAC twelve regular season. They
have now one or shared it forthree straight years, and that's part of
the legacy. That's part of checkingthe boxes of the unfinished business as they
march down this road of where theywant to go, and last night was
just what they didn't think this wasgoing to be part of the road.

(14:03):
But it was a giant bump inthe road, a giant catastrophe in the
road, and then they've navigated it. Yeah beautifully, I would say.
And I think you know what youmentioned her teammates lifting her up. I
think there was a really cool picturethat Rebecca Lobo or Adam Amine tweeted out
yesterday. They were the ones thathad called the game on ESPN of her
whole team and Kelly Graves huddled arounda laptop watching her and deliver this speech,

(14:28):
and it's just, you know,it was a kind of an amazing
behind the scenes moment of to bringout there by herself or team back in
Stanford getting ready for a big game, but then still showing that support,
and then the way that they liftedher up on the court. You mentioned
Satu's performance, I mean, sheshe was phenomenal. What else stood out
to you about that game last night? Mary Well? I have to tip

(14:50):
my cap to Stanford as well.I mean they struggled so much in that
first half, they couldn't find abucket, but only down ten at halftime.
I thought they had a fantastic fourthquarter. They outscored Oregon twenty eight
to eighteen, and they kept kindof knocking on the door. They kept
getting there, and I thought Rebeccamade a great point, and that is
Stanford is on a road of improvement. You know. Maya Dotson is basically

(15:15):
like in her second that was hersecond weekend of playing, you know,
so what is that October for her? Is that September for her? So
as she continues to get reps andcontinues to play better and her teammates get
accustomed to where she is on thefloor. You know, Stanford's only going
to get better. But as youwatch Stanford last night, you couldn't help
but think, boy, how muchthey miss Hayley Jones. You know how

(15:37):
much you miss Dja Carrington. Whata difference they would make. But carry
on, move forward, and wegot to win with what we've got,
And I think we will see animproved Stanford team this weekend. They're going
to have to be on the roadin the desert, two tough games,
two teams that got stung this pastweekend, that are gonna want to play
really well at home. Yeah. One last nugget about Suprena. Not to

(16:00):
go back to Sabrina, but wealways talk about her career versus Stanford,
and it's a little bit skewed toher freshman sophomore year career. It's four
and five, but in her lastfive games, she's four and one,
averaging twenty nine point six points, nine point six rebounds, and seven point
two assists. I don't think theywant to see Oregon again. I think
they're gonna be Yeah, I thinkI think every coach is going to be

(16:22):
very happy with Sabrina in the wNBA next year. Well, Colleen,
I'll tell you this, I betthey do want to see her again,
and that would be in the championshipgame. Yeah, in Vegas. I
think they'd very much love to havethat matchup one more time. Yeah,
well last yet. So so speakingof Vegas, you know the top four
seeds now we know who they are. We don't know exactly what order it's
going to be in, but Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona are

(16:44):
going to get the first round buysin Las Vegas. And I want to
talk about Arizona a little bit becausedespite losing at Colorado, they're gonna get
a first round by in the tournamentfor the first time in nine years by
virtue of of ASU also losing, and that's a big deal. Obviously,
they missed Ay McDonald, she's theleading scorer. You talked to Adam Gonzala
as their sad though any update onher day to day a lower leg injury

(17:08):
and didn't play this weekend, soyou'd certainly hope that she would be back.
But again, if you know you'vegot that spot secured, Essentially,
what they are playing for is thatperson's second round in the NCAA tournament.
So, but more than anything, the health of Airy McDonald is everything.
Yes, you must have her whenyou are heading to the NCAA tournament,

(17:30):
whether you're at home, on theroad, wherever you are, you need
her healthy. Everyone else, Hey, let's go, let's play as well
as we can. But they're goingto have to manage that situation to the
best of their ability. And it'sworth reminding every when the NCAA Selection Committee
does take injuries into account, sothat does matter. Obviously. You know
without McDonald, they they would havescored more than thirty eight points if Arie
had played in that game. Butthe only other losses that they've had this

(17:53):
season besides that one were to topten teams, and I think that's something
they don't lose to, teams toly that they're not supposed to lose to.
And so I think, yeah,I was seeing the first two unds
of the tournament, is still avery realistic possibility for a da Barnes and
Man that place would be rock Andif that ends up coming to Fruition,
Colorado. You mentioned it, butafter so many close, heartbreaking losses,

(18:15):
I loved what j R. Paynesaid. She said it was like watching
her team in that fourth quarter likegrow up before her eyes, because they
were doing the things that she hadtalked about, that they had watched film
about, that she had asked themto do. And it must have been
special no matter who was on thatcourt, the fact that they were able
to close that one out and finallyget that win. And part of her
quotes were also to do it onsenior night for a senior that this team

(18:37):
truly loves is and this is Sojr. Is really really neat. It's just
that's so Jr. And we're talkingabout Quinessa Kaladoe, who is just the
inspirational leader of this incredibly young team. And you know, q just goes
out and tries to lead and shedoesn't score the most on the team shoesn't
you know? She just gets outplaces defense and tries to do the best

(18:59):
she can eat each and every game. And there was a picture of Maya
Haulingshed after that ballgame, just screaminginto the air and you just could feel
the relief flowing off Ofer that wefinally did it, and it was it
was a great moment for Colorado. There is no doubt about that. It
was it was an awesome moment forthem and I before we welcome Amrama goes
on because she's joining us in acouple of minutes. But let's just real

(19:22):
quick your your thoughts on the Huskiesafter all of those close losses, what
was it four overtime losses this season? For them to come out get the
LA sweep and to upset Ucla onSenior Day, what stood out to you?
Well, you know, I talkedto an Shots and Alice Woodward,
who did both games this weekend, and they just said, there's no place
they would have rather been. That'swhere they wanted to be, any place

(19:42):
in the Pac twelve this weekend. The emotion just when you when you do
it, when you finally win it, when you finally you know, climb
the mountain. And they said itwas inspirational. And Abramo goes a senior
Senior Day, Senior weekend, Um, it was just for the it was
everything. Well, let's talk toher, shall we we think, let's

(20:03):
do it. Let's do it allright, Let's bring on the player of
the week, the senior guard whodropped twenty two in that monster upset over
Ucla. As we mentioned on SeniorDay, Ambermelgoza, congrats on an awesome
weekend and thanks so much for beingwith us today. We appreciate it.
Yes, of course, thank youfor having me. All right, so
we got a lot to dive intowith you. You sweep the LA schools
this weekend, you get your firstcareer weekly Pactual Player of the Week honor,

(20:29):
and you upset a top ten teamon Senior Day in front of all
your family and friends. Just walkme through what what did Sunday's win mean
to you? Sunday was really bigfor especially as seniors and the program as
well. I think after beating USCon Friday and then preparing ourself on Saturday,
we came in there on Saturday inpractice, you know, we were

(20:52):
hungry to get this win. AndI think on top of it being a
special day as well for us,I thought that it was it was almost
like a perfect ending at the lastAirlines' arena for myself and the seniors,
and it was just it was alot of fun and I thought my team
played well and we've played with alot of heart and passion. You guys

(21:15):
always played with heart and passion, and this season at times has been so
challenging for overtime losses. And Iknow every time I've seen you, guys,
you walk in the gym, youwork hard, you're ready to go,
and you're hungry and you're do youHow have you guys kept that just
that great attitude all season long withall the heartbreak. Yeah, definitely,

(21:37):
I mean after the overtime losses andbeing up and it's kind of I guess
the word is a little frustration anddisappointed sometimes because we're so close and we
just couldn't, you know, finishthat focus and you know, finish the
game. And but after each ofthose losses, we look at each other
like why is this happening? Likewhat can we do? And I think

(22:00):
after we had it was a weekfull of kind of eventful of things happening.
We lost Darcy and she was oneof our you know, good post
players we had and she was playingreally well for us, and we kind
of all looked each other like wegot to step up now, people have
got to step up and we gotto make a little bit more out of
us. And I think and thenon top of that, it was our

(22:22):
senior weekend, so it was kindof a lot of different things happening,
and we knew that we needed tocome together and play for one another,
and I think we did a greatjob on that. You know, It's
one of the things that Ann Shotsand Alice Woodward, who worked the games
this weekend said to me, andwhat was so obvious to everybody watching you
guys, and it's been obvious tome all season long as well, the

(22:44):
connection between you and your teammates, the passion, how just invested you are
in each other that people haven't goneoff to their own islands despite some of
the hardship. Yeah, definitely.I think that's the one thing we have
is our on within each other andour chemistry off the court. M I
think every single day, one ofus are always hanging out just going to

(23:06):
a movie or going to dinner orjust watching a TV show at our houses.
And I think we have such aspecial bond that when we're on the
court, we know how to playwith each other. And I think it's
it's hard sometimes when you have youdon't have the season that you want,
and a lot of people can,you know, go your separate ways,
like you say, go on yourown island, But we really, you

(23:29):
know, we are believing in eachother that you know, eventually something's going
to open up for us. We'vegone through so much and especially myself and
Mailani and Gigi the last you know, four years, that something's good going
to happen. You know, everythinghappens for a reason. I think most
of us believe in that amber. You mentioned Gigi and I want to follow
up on that because obviously she's anotheranother senior on the squad who's been unable

(23:53):
to play for you guys during herfour seasons due to her you know,
three ACL injuries. She it soundslike from what I could tell, she
surprised the team by making the starton Sunday and the coaches were able to
kind of keep it a secret untilopening introductions and she took part in the
jump ball. Can you can yougive us a back story from your perspective,

(24:14):
Yeah, it was, Oh,it was very I was blindsided from
it. Meilannie was, I thinkher whole team was. I was originally
lowisposed to happen. Was Meilani wassupposed to wear Gigi's jersey, and so
I was like, May like you'reabout to go out, like where's the
jersey? And She's like I don'tknow. And then we were like just
like looking at the video board andgetting ready and like Gigi just comes out

(24:37):
and it's like, so nobody wantsto wear my jersey, huh, Like
oh my gosh, like you shewas fully dressed, like this is something
we've never seen besides like picture day, and it's just like my heart just
like it was just like full ofjoy and I was just like, here's
coming down her faces. It wasjust something that was just so amazing just

(24:57):
to see because this I was gonethrough so much through her life. I
think she's I think maybe she's hadfive tourn apls and just like what she
has gone through is amazing. AndI mean, we all know basketball is
a little thing, but at thetime, since you've been a little girl
growing up, like it's your lifeand just like you almost say basketball like

(25:18):
ball of life. And I think, you know, when that was taken
away from her after her freshman yearof college and then just going through different
situations with her knees, I think, you know, you don't realize like
when you don't have basketball, likewhat is the next thing? And I
think one of her main things she'salways said, like for example, when
recruits come here, Like what wouldyou do if basketball isn't like it wasn't

(25:42):
here for you? Like could youhave that bond with her sisters? And
I think, you know she's reallyshe says she's checked those boxes off because
she's fills that connection with us somuch and she's know that like we've always
been there for her. And Ithink it's just her journey is unbelievable.
And then her having opportunity needs tostart. And you know, after the

(26:02):
game, I saw on Twitter, like the starting lineup of like myself,
Meilani, Kayla, TC and Gigiand they're just like I just like cried
again. I just couldn't believe likethis all these four years and she finally
had the opportunity and then you know, she gets to have the jump all
and then the ending of the gamewas amazing too. Yeah, she goes

(26:23):
back on the floor and if youdon't know Gigi Garcia number thirty two,
six two. She was a forwardout of Sacramento, played at McClatchy,
and her senior year she won astay title. Had nineteen points, twenty
rebounds, and block six shots inthat state title game. So greatness was
coming to Seattle, and then shegot derailed by injuries and amber the things

(26:45):
that people just don't understand. Howmany practices, wait sessions, all the
things you guys do. And Igo to practice, go up to the
practice gym, there's Gigi. Comeback. A couple weeks later, there's
Gigi. Shoot around, there's Gigi, and you're like, Gigi, are
you gonna play? No, AndYou're just like, well, what the
heck are you doing here? I'ma part of this team. And I

(27:08):
just loved her quote after the gameis that I wanted this was a gift
to my team. This was agift to my family to see me walk
out and to do this. Imean, it wasn't like she was doing
it for her. It was agift for you guys and everything. And
I mean that just blew me away. Yeah, I agree with you.
A lot of people have probably talkedabout in the last couple of days.

(27:30):
But she is a very competitive person. And I mean we don't see on
the basketball for side, but ohboy, when we go on team bonding,
you know, sleepovers and all ofthat, she is always trying to
win those board games or you know, just little shooting things we do during
practice when she can be involved,She's always trying to see number one.
And I just love that of herbecause you know, me and me and

(27:53):
Melanie always look back like saying,I wish we could just stay with her
just one time, because we knowshe would get those boards for us.
We know she and we always jokearound like you GGU probably would have gone
in technical, but she's like thatbecause would have gone a couple of them
just because that's who I am.But we laugh about it. And I

(28:14):
think that day for her was justamazing, and I think it was almost
like just can close the book forher in a way from her past boys,
because I think, you know,it's very it's a very hard thing
to do. I don't know howshe does it at all, what she's
gone through, and I think it'sjust amazing how she's had, you know,
the support from the coaches, andI think that was something that was

(28:36):
really helpful and you know, fromall of us, and it's just something
that I think it was really goodfor her. And I just she's,
oh, she's she's a powerful womanand I love that girl so much.
Yeah, it was it was amazing. It was a cool moment and tip
of the hat to Corey Close andUCLA for for being on board with with
that as well. It was ait was a cool deal, um,
you know. And for one ofthe reasons that I love this podcast,

(28:59):
and I've said it before, isbecause we get a chance to talk to
you guys about stuff that we'd youknow, it's not the two postgame questions
after the court of the two pregamequestions. We actually get to get into
some stuff with you. So I'dlove to revisit your freshman year at you
dub You know, I'm sure itwasn't easy for variety of reasons. You
you obviously, like a lot offreshman sat and watched Kelsey Plum chantel osahor

(29:22):
it was a phenomenal team your freshmanyear. You didn't get a lot of
playing time, but you were soakingit in and learning. What do you
remember about that time in your lifeas you were dealing with the adjustment to
college life. Yeah, definitely itwas I mean, coming from high school
basketball in college basketball and being teammateswith all Americans, it's a very hard

(29:45):
transition because, like I say,a high school stage, you're star and
when you go to college basketball, they're all the stars, like there's always
going to be everybody's good. Ithink I knew when I was coming in
I wanted to way at the bestconference in the nation, and I knew
that I was. I'm a competitiveperson, and I knew that I wanted

(30:07):
to take off that opportunity and Isaw it coming in. I knew who
was in front of me, andI wasn't afraid to, you know,
I guess almost like try to outplaysomeone that was older than me, just
you know, I always go outthere and have fun and try my hardest.
But um, I didn't play asmuch my freshman year, and I

(30:30):
think a little bit of my Iguess I'll open up to my struggle was
I had ADHD and ADD and Iwasn't diagnosed with that right away, and
so that was kind of hard formyself to adjust to all of this.
And it was difficult because personally Ididn't know like why I couldn't learn a
couple of things on the core orlearn certain situations. And I was struggling.

(30:52):
But I was like trying to figureout by myself and not ask anything
anybody for help. And I thinkeventually ones I kind of opened up and
you know, realized like maybe Ishould get tested and maybe I am diagnosed
with something at that time, butI just didn't in a way believe that

(31:14):
right away. And so I eventuallylike took you know, I was took
the chance to you know, talkto my trainer about it and the coaches,
the coaching staff during that time, and you know, kind of see
if I can get tested for something. And eventually a couple of weeks,
a couple of months later came by, I was diagnosed with stuff, and
kind of it's a little bit it'sdifficult because at the time I was it

(31:38):
was hard for me to you know, play and remember things at the time
because I was struggling. But Ididn't know what I was struggling with because
I wasn't having that the test resultsback. Um so, But I mean,
besides that, it was amazing myfreshman year. I learned from the
best of the best, being underChelsea plums Wing. She took me right

(32:00):
away and she always she always toldme, you know, be ready,
you never know when your chances tocome. And I always I was worked
hard and I knew that, youknow, it's maybe my time's not right
now. My freshman year, butmaybe when you never know, I'm gonna
have to be ready for my sophomoreyear and you know, I'm gonna take

(32:20):
that that leadership role because we've hadwe had things during that time. The
sooner cost you had about five orsix people will leave. So um,
it was kind of you know,I needed to take that next step of
to be the leader. But um, it was good, It was fun,
It was a lot of things. You can always your freshman year is
always going to be a roller coasterbecause you're away from home as well.

(32:42):
But I thought I had a lotof support from my family as well too.
How do you think, looking back, and I appreciate you opening up
and sharing that with us, howdo you think that that part of your
journey shaped you? Yeah, definitely, Um, I think my journey well,
when I was a little girl,I was always kind of I was
always I guess you can save theslower reader, and you know I learned

(33:06):
differently. But um, as atime when on I always trying to you
know, make myself fit in ina way for myself to you know,
be like, Okay, I canlike maybe some people were smarter than me,
but I can like fit in andI can figure my way out because
you know, I'm the way oflike I work hard to get my like
the good grades. I work hardand I do the extra things. But

(33:29):
um, the journey, like theway it came out my freshman year and
then realizing that I was diagnosed withwhat I have and then getting help and
getting extra time. But just onthe court, it was a big plus
for me because I especially when coachNeighbors left and I had a new coaching
staff with Jody Wyn and Derek andall of them. I really sat down

(33:51):
and I told him. I waslike, this is I like, I
promise you, this is not excused, Like this is how I learned,
and I learned differently, like Ineeded more visualized. I need to you
know, sometimes you might have torepeat it to me a couple of times
for me to understand it, ormaybe I have to walk through it.
And they really really supported me behindthat, and I think to this day

(34:12):
they still do those things for meand it's really really helpful. And you
know sometimes when there's moments and I'mjust like I just had a brain part,
like I'm sorry, I didn't meanto. I totally forget about the
play, I just had a brainpart. But I mean we all had
that of course too. But Dstoriniis like a my freshman year and going
through everything and learning from the bestof the best behind them, and you

(34:35):
know, getting a new coaching staffand then accepting me who I am and
how I learned was really really I'mvery grateful for that, and and the
support that I've had behind my teammatesand my family and the coach as well.
Like I said, but where Ijust come now, it's I felt
like I've learned so much of whoI am, and you know, the

(34:59):
support I have behind the situation whereI know that I always have help and
I'll always have different resources around me. Amber it had to be just like
the scariest time of your life.I mean, you go away to college.
That's hard enough. But what wouldyour message, what would your message
to other young people who experience thisto how to find your way out?

(35:22):
How would how can you through yourexperience help others, you know, come
to that realization so they can gethelp too. Yeah, definitely. Um,
like I said, it's hard,you know when you're going through I
guess you can say the situation orjust trying to figure out everything, and

(35:42):
everything's almost thrown at you at allat once. It's hard to you know,
gather your your thoughts and realize likeseparate things of like, okay,
I'm here, now, I haveschool, I have basketball. Now I
gotta you know, you gotta kindof find you're You're not gonna be perfect
in everything, so you gotta almostfind there's always gonna be a weakness and

(36:05):
a little bit of everybody. AndI think once I recognized the way I
wasn't learning the same way as someoneelse, I kind of really thought to
myself, you know, took timeso like maybe it's okay to not be
perfect, and maybe it's okay tospeak up, and it's okay to say
something might be wrong. And Ithink eventually I took that step of talking

(36:29):
to someone. And one time, once I talk to someone and you know,
they're like, yes, we couldget you on tested for all of
this and made a huge difference forme. I made a huge difference in
the classroom for myself academically. AndI thought once I was on the court
and I had those resources around meand the support, and I had the

(36:51):
reason of you know, kind ofwhy this is happening me, happening to
me sometimes and I'm forgetting things orI'm just like can't learn the right thing
right away. It kind of cameto almost like a way of peace and
just like okay, like I thinksteps who I am right now, and
I'll like be okay, and Iknow I'll help. And I think that

(37:12):
was something that was really helpful forme. And you know that started myself
to just realize who I am andyou know, keep growing as a woman.
Amber. That is so eloquent andwell said, and again, thank
you for sharing that with us.You know you mentioned who you are.
Part of who you are is intensecompetitor. We all know that, but

(37:34):
that goes back to your childhood days. And I got to ask you.
We talked about this at Media Dayand it was one of my favorite topics
of that three hours that I waswith Mary Murphy on set. You grew
up in Santa Barbara and you werea BMX racers as a kid, and
yes you not only compete, butyou like won some national events. So
tell me, just give us astory of kind of how you got into

(37:55):
that like that. You're an adrenalinejunkie at heart, I imagine yes I
was, Um, well, well, when I was a little girl,
I don't think I was. Iwas. I always wanting out with the
boys. I always wanted to playout on the black top. Um.
I always ran outside with no shoeson, and like dresses were just out

(38:17):
of the occasion. Um everything. But I think I was just that little
girl. I was not afraid ofanything. Um, I was. I
was a daredevil definitely. Um.It all started we had this MX track
um right up about five minutes awayfrom a house, and Sanna Bar was

(38:39):
a small town and it kind ofeverybody knew that I wasn't afraid to,
you know, try new things. And one of my neighbors came up to
me and he kind he worked upthere, um, and he was he
was like, you know, hecame out to parents and he was like,
you know, your daughters should trythis out. And they're like,

(39:00):
oh gosh, like what is this, Like it's kind of scary, but
I and they knew that. Iused to go on motorcycles motocross with my
parents out in like the desert nearlike Nevada, because I had a couple
of family members out there, andso we go out there and she's like,
okay, well, this can't beworse there. She's not a motorcycle,
she's already done that, so let'stry the bike version. And I

(39:21):
guess we can try this. Andeventually I started going up there every every
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, andI was just go laps and laps girls.
It wasn't very pop popular for girls. It was me and this other
girl, um Veronica, and shewas a little older than me. She
she played for ucsbu Soft full Umand she me and her just kind of

(39:47):
battle each other and we're like, okay, so there's no really girls racing,
so like, what do we donow, Well, the next step
was to go against the guys.So we went against the guys and eventually,
really, once I got the hangof it, I started too.
I started winning and it was kindof like, oh wow, like I
can compete against these boys, Likeall right, let's see what's next.

(40:09):
And no, I was you whenyou had your helmet on, you know,
you don't look like you're the onlygirl out there. So my mom
one day I came back from schooland she completely painted my whole bike pink
and my helmet pink. So theyknew that I was that girl off the
meeting all those boys and then likeyeah, so then it went, it

(40:36):
went on, and I eventually started, you know, going out of California
and then started traveling around the states, and then I qualified for the national
championship in Kentucky and I raced againstsize and um I won. I won
the national championship at age six,So it was very very fun for me.

(40:58):
It was good at the age Iunderstand. Do you still have that
trophy? Oh? Yes, Istill have that trophy. When I was
coming back from Kentucky, was abouta probably seven feet tall, and so
I had to obviously have flying backand forth, and I had to completely
break the whole thing down and justlike put it in the little um right

(41:20):
next to the pilot they had likethe little room for the jack that they
just swung it right in there.Yeah. Can you guys hold this for
me? I'm a national champion. It was a lot bigger than me,
I'll tell you that much. That'sone of my favorite fun facts of every
play any player in the conferences, that you were a BMX national champion and
also that you deadlift three hundred andforty pounds that's my other favorite you talked

(41:44):
about you it's absolute. Um,well, we appreciate that you've been so
generous with your time today. I'vejust got one more thing to ask you
and then we can we can moveon. But you guys obviously have a
huge weekend coming up, heading tothe Oregon schools to close out. You've
got Oregon State at six o'clock onFriday on the Pactorals network and then Sunday
at matt Night Arena twelve pm newon Pacteal's network. Mary Murphy's going to

(42:07):
be on the call for that, playing Sabrina and Esco and Ruthy Hibbert on
their senior day. I know there'sno love loss between Huskies and Ducks,
but what can you say about theirlegacy and what it means to the conference
as a whole. It's amazing.I was watching last night against Stamford,

(42:27):
and you know, after the wholeday of how emotional it was for Sabrina,
I thought she did a great jobof, you know, handling the
situation. She played phenomenal. SheI mean, she broke another record.
Like you said, she's on herown league and she's she's a amazing person.

(42:50):
She's um. You know, shehas that competitive in her. She
plays with a lot of heart, and I think she's done a great done
a great and phenomenal thing for thisconference and just one's basketball, and I
wish for nothing but the best. And I think it's been a lot of
fun playing Heer on the senior night. I mean I heard its sold out,
so I think at this point wegot nothing to lose and we just

(43:12):
have fun and enjoy that momentum. And Ruthie she's done a phenomenal job as
well. She's a great player. She that girl knows how to rebound,
she knows how to she knows howto shoot us well. But I think,
you know, those two, thosetwo girls done a lot of great
things for his conference, and likeI said, I wish nothing for the
best for them, Well said, beautifully said. We appreciate that sentiment.

(43:36):
And one last thing before I letyou go, I just want to say
that I'm looking forward to seeing youin Las Vegas next week because you and
your teammates provided one of my alltime favorite memories that I've been a part
of in my eight years of thePactwells Network. And I think you know
what I'm talking about last year youguys upset Oregon State and you just completely
bum rush our set at Missy Petersonhad that game winning three and it was

(43:58):
it was just incredible. You guyswere the first eleven seed to make it
to the semifinals of the tournament, and it was a moment that you know,
I had nothing to do with.I just happened to be there,
but it was one that I'll neverforget. So I assume it's the same
for you guys. Yes, definitely. We still talk talk about it all
the time. Um, it's funwhen times in practice, so let us,
you know, redo that scenario justfor the fun of it when we're

(44:21):
at the end of it. Butum, it's I mean, it's something
that I'll always have a memory of. And you know, I'm really excited
for the Pactaball Tournament again. AndI think what we've you know, our
confidence saying, you know, uscoming together in the last couple of weeks.
I think, you know, thisis really going to prepare us for
the tournament in the Pact twelve. And I think, you know, coming

(44:43):
up this weekend against Organ stay inOrgan is going to be a good challenge
for us, and I think, you know, we gotta come up there
and not be a phrase and justhave fun and you know, attack and
play basketball the exact way to goabout it. Amramel goes that you were
awesome. Thank you so much forspending so much time with us today,
and enjoy the rest of your dayand I'll see we'll see you next week.
Thank you so much, appreciate it. Good dogs, always great catching

(45:07):
up with Amber Melgosa, one ofthe great personalities in the conference, no
doubt about that. The BMX storiesreally just get me every time I hear
them. A reminder that you canstill get your tickets pack Dash twelve dot
com slash tickets join us in Vegas. It is going to be It's gonna
be a good time. I thinkif anything confirmed what happened on Sunday with
those three unc ranked teams beating threeranked teams, it's chaos is probably going

(45:29):
to ensue. Yeah, we sawwhat happened last year, and uh,
I think we know it's gonna bea wild scene with Sabrina and Oregon and
Stamford trying to knock on the door, Arizona, UCLA and everybody else.
It's gonna be a it's gonna beoff the hook. It's been a lot
of fun. It's gonna be fun. Um Okay. I want to double
back on on Senior Day real quick, because you know we mentioned it in
the open. We talked to Ambera little bit about it, but half

(45:51):
the teams now have honored their seniors. So I guess I'll just ask you,
was there anything that stood out foryou, a moment that stood out
for you from from Sunday or thisclass overall as a whole. Well for
Utah, it was Keana Moore andDenisia Provo Provo who had gotten that sixth
year and they were two of thefirst players that Lynn Roberts has sort of

(46:13):
built her program on, want atransfer, want a recruit, And you
know, they won that Senior Dayand it was a big day, an
emotional day for them. But Ihave never before a game cried, or
after a game cried at a seniorceremony, and I did watching Washington States.
I literally had tears rolling down myeyes did that game with Guy Harman

(46:36):
and Bobby Herstova's mom could not bethere because of the distance from Bulgara,
Barna, Bulgaria. She was she'scoming for graduation, couldn't make it for
senior Day. And when they showedthe shot of her mom speaking to her
daughter, you know, go wintoday, Bobby. And then when you
saw Bobby look up and see hermom and I'm like, who, who

(47:00):
does that just not just crush yourheart and say, oh my god.
You know, we all have ourmom and our dad on senior day and
you know they fly in or theydrive in, and you know, chen
you up from cal Her her parentscould not come in because of everything going
on right now with the coronavirus andjust the distance and how much it cost
to travel internationally, and so shehad some academic mentors take walk her out,

(47:23):
as did Bobby. But you justyou just feel for that moment that
here's this mom back home watching agame on a laptop and watching her daughter
who she has sent away to getthis degree and she's doing that, and
it just it just tugged at me. And then just the whole scene at
Washington State. You know, they'vegot a new football coach, and the
whole football team came out and theytook group pictures and they were hugging Bobby

(47:47):
and they're hugging channel, Molina,Molina's two sisters who are on the team,
her brother, her parents, hermom who coached her in high school,
and they were there were more. There was no flowers left in Pullman.
The lays that they were piled upalmost over Chanel and Bobby's heads,
and then they had a crown offlowers as well. It was just and

(48:07):
it was an amazing scene. Andyou want when you see these folks just
hug each other for that moment. They're not going to win a national title,
they're not going to get All Americanstatus, but it's it's that four
years or that five years or thatsix years and what you've done together,
and it's just powerful, powerful stuff. So so much of what we focus
on in this conference are those teamsat the top and the top players,

(48:30):
but there's so much more. Twelveteams times twelve to fifteen people on the
team do the math. That's howmany women are involved in college basketball in
the Pac twelve conference, and theyall have stories to tell, and on
senior Day their stories get told andit's it's it's quite the moment. It
is quite the moment, beautifully saidMary, and I'm with you, Nick

(48:52):
Rolovich I was excited about him whenhe got hired as Washington States coach,
and then I saw, you know, there's been a lot of things kind
of along the way, but himbeing at that game. There were what
forty fifty football players there and hewas, you know, rollo, it's
tweeting about how proud he was ofBobby and Chanel. It was, I
mean, the football coach in awesome. We see it at Oregon too.
I mean, Mario does it.It's just it's it's really family. Yeah,

(49:19):
it's real when you show up foreach other like that, that's really
what family is. Um, allright, is it? Is it time
for our favorite segment of the podcast? I hope? So all right,
let's do it. And now fromMurphy's Law, I've got two for you,
Ashley. I don't know. Didyou ever see the movie Dirty Dancing?
Oh? Only like eight hundred thousandtimes. Patrick Swayze is his girlfriend

(49:42):
Baby. Don't put baby, don'tyou do? Not put baby in the
corner carrying a watermelon. That's right. Don't put any team in the corner.
And that's what I felt like.Sometimes people want to put you know,
teams like Utah and cal and Coloradoput him in the corner, Washington,
stay you dub, don't don't putbaby in the corner. Don't put
those teams in the corner. Andthey came out, they competed, they

(50:02):
won, and these are teams thatare you know, it's important to finish
strong. Why because you want totell recruits, Look, we've won three
of five, we've won two ofthree. We've got it going. Look
how we stayed with it. We'vegot great culture. This finish as is
important to these teams and where they'retrying to go, as it is for
the top four, six, tentwhatever you want to give it. So
don't put anybody in the corner. And my second one is it's an old

(50:27):
Chinese proverb. One picture is worthten thousand words. We are in the
business of video and we're in words. But you take snapshots. Bobby's mom,
you know, Bobby, you lookat Gigi, You look at Ellie
Bamberger with your knee and Missy Petersongiving her a kiss on the forehead.

(50:50):
Hollingshed looking up to the skylike finallywe did it. You know, the
Oregon team looking at their teammates speakingabout Kobe in front of millions of people.
Pictures are worth a thousand words andthey're powerful. And now I'm crying
again. You're gonna make me cry. Mary. I just want to say
that's one of the reasons why Ilove getting to work with you and get
into this podcast, because the passionand the love that you have for not

(51:15):
only the craft but for these studentathletes is unlike anyone that I've ever been
around. So thank you for bringingit every single week you you always do
and it's eloquent as always. Ihave to drop them. You have to
drop the mic. Okay, well, then I can sign off for you
if you want to. If youwant to drop the mic, I do
want to mention just two more quickthings we did get Are you up for

(51:36):
a listener question? Maybe? Allright, why don't how about we do
this. I'm going to give ashout out to our coaches. There were
fifteen women's basketball coaches named for thelate season watch list for the Warner Ladder
Nay Smith Trophy for Women's Coach ofthe Year and the PAC twelve leads all
conferences with five on that selection ofDa Barnes, Corey Close, Kelly Graves,
Scott Ruecktar Vanderveer. Kelly Graves thefrontrunner you think still for I would

(52:00):
Tact twelve Coach of the Year rightnow? Can you not be agreed?
Also, is chrism Osborne making alate run for Elia Pelee's Freshman of the
Year award. She's playing great. No One's going to take that award from
Peelee. She's just She's just anunstoppable force. I can't wait to see
her at the tournament, can't waitto see her next year. And I
want to meet her brother. Amen. Amen, all right? And the

(52:21):
last thing this is, this isour listener question. Um. It's from
at Fairways and Greens, and itis who has a roster, given that
Airy McDonald is healthy, who hasa roster that is better built for a
deep n C douablea tournament run?Arizona or Ucla. I'm just gonna say
us LA. I feel like theythey hit a little bit of a bump
last weekend. But I think withOsbourne coming on and h just how good

(52:45):
Onion wedding is and just their experience, I think Arizona is finding themselves.
I think Ucla has made that drumpthis year, but it could be Arizona
too. Yeah, it's gonna befun to watch. Speaking of Arizona Woman's
basketball, we have a wonder fullOur Stories feature that is premiering on an
all new episode of Our Stories onthe Pactwelves Network on Wednesday, the twenty

(53:06):
