Every it was a number of people who really believed
that the rapture that's referencing the Bible was going to
happen where God was gonna come back and take a
selective few.

You know what, I'm tired of that they've been tricking
these people for a long time on the West side
of Chicago.

I remember that Jackson and Lotus.

And donated everything to the church and to the man,
and then when the rapture didn't happen, don't.

I'm like, come on, y'all needs to stop this, stop
telling these people these lives or.

Do people need to do their own homework and not
be easily led?

For themselves, absolutely, and they gotta understand the difference of
of how the thought process of everybody is not the same.
Because when I look at it, I look at the Bible,
it's a lot of questions, Yeah, that I have, and
I'll go to church. My faith and religion and all
that's different. But what made me think that.

returned because of work for United Corporate America.

I am from Maywood, born and raised, been out here.
My family owned the autobody repair shop back in the days,
Freddie Gee's Body Shop. We painted everybody's.

Car thirteenth Yeah, we painted everybody's car.

Uh, from the city back to Maywood. Been doing that
all my life. And then we jumped into this restaurant thing.

We're following my wife. Okay, there you go.

Jumped into the restaurant business. And it's been you know, trying,
but uh we hit up.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
But before you did the restaurant, you had a little
candy yeah yeah.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

She started a candy.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
She did that.

Speaker 5 (09:53):
It started out as a candy store that had little
food and then now as we have grown, turn into
a restaurant that has a little bit of candy.

So let's just pigging back on that.

Speaker 6 (10:10):
The candy store started and that's where yours originated. So
yours was are not for profit, which stands for your
own urban, reliable source. And we started yours because there
was a lot of rucks taking place on seventeenth and Madison,
and I was good friends with mister Williams man he

rest in peace, Don Williams, and he gave me the
opportunity to open. So we started off walking the kids
from Urban Elementary across the rough path of seventeenth and Madison.
But if they needed to be fed, we brought them
to the candy store and fed them first, then walked.

Them home because they didn't have bread.

Speaker 6 (10:56):
That's how you'res started, Okay, and that was back in
twenty sixteen.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Oh that's great, and then yours has just grown put
some respect on their yeah slash restaurant. Wow, Now what
are some of the I want?

Speaker 4 (11:17):
I wouldn't call them dishes per se, because you got quick,
quick food. So so what are some of the items
that people typically purchase from DNA store.

Speaker 6 (11:28):
Well, go ahead, So number one sellar is our rice
bolt and then we have basic Italian beef. They because
every kind of urban nacho you want, you can you
can get.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
Okay, so this is this is still the store, yes,
and where's it at is just so we are.

Speaker 6 (11:49):
In the Old Tina Huts. Are amazed, and so we've
been at the Old Tina Huts space since twenty two.

I'm still a good spot because you got a lot
of the tea of her regular estate, you know, often
came in the area.

So yes, it took it took a while getting people
to you knowlatchallatch all they were used to. She was there,
she was a staple there, yeah, thirty years.

But we got them now and now you know that's awesome.
Then so then now y'all, y'all have a baby.

So Slow had a baby.

She really she's really the one that runs the candy store.

So and then you you had the two stores and
you and your wife you sit down and she say, hey,
let's do something.

How did that go? They with nothing like that?

Okay, y'all forgot about the game the game room that
you have. Yeah, so y'all done had a few businesses
prior to yours too, so it's in y'all.

Yeah, so it didn't go like that.

We had the game room that was next to the
Tina her space, right, and that was set up as
a place for the kids when they get out of
school to come somewhere to be a safe haven, right
for the kids.

Until their parents come home. Right.

It was part of the non for profit as well.
So we tied that together. And then my wife is
has a huge mind for dreaming of what she wants, right,
ain't no wrong, no, no no. And we were walking
we were looking for some property in Maywood and we

went looked at a piece of property and we got
into a bidding war with this property and we lost
the bed. So we were walking back shaking our heads,
you know, like man, we lost it. Right, and then
we was introduced to the space that we have now.
So we was like put a bed on it and
they accepted the bid.

So that's the old piano show piano was right there, fifty.

Speaker 5 (14:33):
Pianos in it when we got it.

Yeah.

Yeah, we donated some, gave some away, and kept two
baby grand pianos.

Butupt ahead just side with that because I like to
tell this short story. When we were looking before we
bought that, we bought some land in west Chester because
we were gonna build a house in west Chester before
I decided to run for office. And when we were

building a house, I was telling everyone like, when I
build this house, I don't care if I don't have
any furniture anything. I'm gonna have a grand piano that
like toy, can you play?

I'm like, of course, not right on that big piano.

Good Christmas pictures? Yes. And then two.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Weeks later getting the grand piano. Wow, wow, grand. So
that you're planning the seed. In other words, I got.

So you better ride with them dreams.

Yeah, So I said, okay, big bro, I got to
I'm following you. So we we had a good treat
and tell them about yours and the menu and what
you guys offer as far as entertainment and rental space
and stuff like that.

So we are full service, sit down, fine dine PM
Monday through Friday, Saturdays and Sundays eight to five. We
use the weekend schedule for private events. And rentals from
baby showers to three pass birthday parties, bridal showers, you

name it, we host it. We have a very nice,
upscale clientele that we love. We would appreciate the community
and outside that comes and supports us. We serve everything
from down home regular American breakfast to soul full, delicious

Sunday meals from semic croquettes, tails, chicken and waffles, shrimps
and grits. We actually got a shrimp flight where you
can get shrimped and grits, cat fishing grits and ox
tails and grits.

And we're bringing some soulful stuff to the menu because
I want to bring up, of course, my mother's hot
water corn breade, So we're getting ready to bring that
to the menu along with some other.

Special dishes, some other special dishes.

So yeah, we're looking forward to people to come out,
get to know us, hang out with us. On Tuesdays
and Wednesdays, those are our nights that we do specials.
On Tuesdays we do tacos and tequila, dollar shooters, two
dollars shots, dollar wings, I mean dollar tacos. And on
Wednesdays it's wings and wine, and our wingsday dollar wine

We actually catered two events today and we have the
best cat prices around. Our cater prices run average for
most people four to five dollars, where everybody else is

I had an epiphany today that you know how they
got the cliche where people say if it was easy,
everybody would do it. Well, I came to the realization
today that if it's easy, we wouldn't do it. That's right,
If it was easy, we wouldn't be doing it right.

Get what I'm saying, challenge for champions exactly, you know
what I'm saying. So that's kind of like, uh, don't
be afraid to face adversities that you will run through
in trying to fulfill your dreams. Do your research. Research
is very important before you go into any kind of business.
Do your homework. You know, the resources are important. That's

what we lack in our culture and our community is
not having the resources or the funding to be able
to do what you need to do. So that was
a hurdle for us. And you know for people that's
trying to do it, do your homework. It's out there.
You just got to dig for it though. You know
it's out there.

in the struggle you do.
