You're listening to Irish Sports Talk.Hello, Nordame fans, Welcome to Irish
Sports Talk, episode six hundred andfifteen. Nor Dame came away with a
big win on Saturday night, andwe'll talk about our predictions, what we
got right, what we got wrong. Of course I'm joined as well with

(00:23):
Randall. Randall, how's it going. That's going pretty good, except I'm
dealing with hiccups. So just recentlyor when did this happen or start happening?
Just today? I have my wisdom. Excuse me, this could be
a disaster. My wisdom teeth cutout yesterday and for some reason today I
can't get rid of hiccups. Isthat a known result of getting your wisdom

(00:45):
teeth teeth cut out? I don'tknow. I don't know. I have
to do a little more research.Right now, I'm just researching on how
to get rid of them. Well, I know some people just have them.
Oh, I know that has tobe the worst. I saw a
guy that has had hiccups his wholelife. Let's tried everything, and that
is I found a good meme thator jiff, whatever you want to call

(01:07):
them. It was like, hiccupkill me hiccup kill me like it's I
can I can't handle it. It'salmost you would think if you could put
put a hose down your uh,is it from your It's probably from your
gut, right, that's where it'scoming from the lungs. Put a hose
down too, your lungs, atyour your nose or something, just to
give it a constant open passageway. Then it would just kind of regulate itself

(01:30):
and not forced the build up.Well, suppose it's from You can even
do like stomach like crunch up,curl up, and that's supposed to help.
And I'm not sure, but allright, Well, nor Dame did
defeat North Carolina on Saturday night, and I guess before we even get to
that, it looks like from watchingon TV that Nordame even turned up the

(01:51):
experience even more than they did againstusc UM. And maybe they just didn't
show as much on on the onthe Broad podcast as they did in the
usc game. But did you didyou think about it? Did you think
it looked about the same or didyou think that they did ramp it up
um or take it up a notch? Well? I felt they took it
up a notch I mean they looked. They continue to look better at each

(02:13):
game. Well, no, I'mnot talking about more. I'm talking about
just oh you mean stadium experience.Yes, I didn't think about it as
much this time. Um, thenit was probably the same as the USC
game. It's just that on theTV broadcast, maybe they didn't catch up
quite everything. Yeah, but no, it was. I had did have
ticket, excuse me, tickets tothe game, but um, I didn't

(02:34):
give them to my brother and hisnew wife as part of their wedding gifts.
So he said that it was anawesome time. Excuse me, This
is freak gonna be annoying to listento you, but I'll do my best.
But no, I agree, they'vebeen they keep they keep getting better
at it. Um. We hadsome score predictions, or it's not so

(02:55):
yeah, we had score predictions. We had some predictions for this game.
One of the big ones that Iwas thinking about while watching the game was
I said, this Nordame's gonna havetheir score the most points of the season,
which they did. They scored fortyfour. I predicted forty two,
where I definitely got it wrong.I didn't think this was gonna be a
gonna be a close game, andit didn't feel very close, but it

(03:17):
was close with than what I expected, ending score forty four thirty four,
And definitely a few times North Carolinanorthlinad was often within striking distance of tying
or taking the lead, and theynever really Nor Dame kept control of the
game for the most part throughout thethroughout the game, definitely in the second

(03:38):
half, but there work times oneNorthlina made a come back, made plays
and had a chance to take thelead. But yeah, it was definitely
back and forth for a while, and Ner Dame missed Kyle Hamilton. I
don't think it would have been backand forth if Kyle Hamilton would have been
there, because some of those blownplays that resulted in touchdowns were because Kyle

(03:59):
Hamilton. Yeah. Um yeah.We continue to see the Notre Dame offense
improve develop and I think definitely partof it is because North Client's defense is
bad, but part of it istoo play calling time and Reaves did I
think, has done a phenomenal jobof adapting the game plan the second half

(04:24):
of the season to accommodate what JackCohen is what he can do well,
and he eliminates some of his weaknesses, but even Jack Cohen had a scramble
for a touchdown. Well, that'swhat's so strange. Have you figured out
when they bring when they bring inBuckner, like how they're switching quarterbacks,
because it just seems straight. Idon't think anybody knows when they're going to
switch him in and out. Yeah, it doesn't. There doesn't seem to

(04:46):
be a whole lot of rhyman reasonanymore. But earlier in the year it
did feel a little like there wasa little more rhyman reason. If it
was third long, they were definitelygonna bringing Cohen for a passing down.
But now they now they bring inCohen right after Buckner and still run the
ball. So they added like anotherdimension dimension to that, so and Cohen

(05:09):
can run. He scored on arun. We did it twice. I
mean Cohen had twenty eight three rushesfor twenty eight yards. I mean,
nobody was expecting him to run onthat touchdown. No. Um, Karen
Williams obviously had a huge, hugenight. Ninety one yard play was definitely
the highlight of the has to beone of the best plays at Notre Dame

(05:29):
Stadium. I mean, I remembertalking about Reggie Bush being able to reverse
the field and make plays. Butfor Kyron Williams to do that, like
the play broke down, he shouldhave been it should have he should have
been tackled for a loss at thegoal line. And to turn that into
the play did like that. Thatwas absolutely unreal what he did. It

(05:51):
was also interesting to watch on thatplay Avery Davis turned on the after burners
to help. He wasn't really neededthen, but he did turn on the
afterburners on that play to try toget a block in and actually Michael Master
look faster than kyr and Williams didwell if you see it how much running
Kyron Williams was doing before he evertook off. True for the ninety one

(06:12):
yards, I mean he was partiallygassed before he even took off. So
but with the running back, Imean, Logan Diggs looking pretty good.
So Notre Dame has definitely has someguys to step in once Karen Williams isn't
around. But one of the bigthings I noticed too was the wide receivers.
I mean, having Lorenzo Styles isjust incredible. Um, you know,

(06:41):
he should have had that one playhe dropped that one play that should
have in the beginning. That shouldhave been an easy catch. I mean,
that was on him. It wasn'tan easy cat, but it hit
him, it hit his hands. He should have caught that. But I
don't know why he would play playBrady lendsay over him at this point,
and yeah, and he knows hewants to try to play this next weekend
because he knows if he doesn't playthis next week. I don't know if

(07:04):
we get the starting job, butI do wonder how much of the younger
guys playing is feeling the pressure withyou transfers over the last few years.
And Brian Kelly talked about it thisafter the Florida State game when there was
another wide super transfer. He didtalk about how they got to get more

(07:25):
guys involved, and since that game, we did see that. So I
don't know how much of it isthese the young guys impressing the coaches to
a point where they feel like theydeserve to play, or if it's more
pressure that they need to play avariety of guys and it's really worked out
and they're playing better than the guysthat had been starters. And Amy Davis

(07:45):
had a great game too at fivecatches fifty one yards and a touchdown.
So it's not like some of thestarters haven't been playing well. But but
Brandon Lindsley has not been playing well. Yeah. Well, I think like
guys like Lorenzo styles of just takingadvantage of the opportunities they have, that's
not always been the case with guys. Okay, yeah, that's a good
point, all right. So notrenames offense definitely played did their part.

(08:09):
Defense disappointed. I think maybe itwas most disappointed in the quarterback scramble.
It was in the second half.I don't recall if it was the I'm
not sure which touchdown it was,but the one where the quarterback scrambled for
about thirty yards. We saw asimilar breakdown of the defense. I don't
even remember what opponent it was,but a very similar play where the quarterback

(08:33):
scrambled for you know, around twentyyards and had multiple people opportunity to tackle
him, but just just didn't quiteget there, didn't quite wrap him up
and make the tackle. It's reallyfrustrating because it looks like there should have
been a dozen guys with the opportunityto stop him, and yeah, no
one does. Well, I feellike this defense is wearing down a little

(08:54):
bit. The season is taking atoll on him. They're battered and bruised,
and you're starting to see more notinjuries, but they're definitely playing a
little bit different. I think theseason's kind of taking a toll on them
a little bit, and they're missingsome more tackles that they would normally make.
I mean, also like not havingHamilton there to back you up.
I don't know if they were tryingharder to make that tackle. You know

(09:18):
what, No that is as you'retrying harder and then mess up. They
gotta sound terrible in this episode.I apologize. Well, it's not gonna
get any easier against Navy. Asfar as the wear and tear on the
defense, Brian Kelly talked about it. A reporter asked him at the press
conference about the wear and tear andhow former players have said that this is

(09:41):
just a really physical game, andBrian Kelly confirmed that, So the wear
in turn of the defense, it'snot going to get easy this Saturday.
And do you think they can keepit together enough? Obviously I feel very
comfortable against Navy, but then youdo have Virginia, Georgia Tech, Stanford

(10:03):
so maybe not really powerful offenses comingup, but still offenses that I mean,
this defense has given up points. So even though these aren't really dynamic
offenses like UNC or USC, it'sstill I think a concern if they actually
are wearing down. And I guessthat brings up a point two about Kyle
Hamilton. Is he gonna be playingthe rest of the year. He's not

(10:24):
playing on Saturday. Yeah, that'sa big question. I think you will,
but it's hard to tell him thisday and aid it depends a lot.
If if Notre Dame is still undefeatedwhen he comes back, then yes,
I think he will. If NotreDame would maybe lose this game.
Hopefully he's back for the Virginia game. But the Virginia game is the one
that's kind of question. Virginia hasa very good quarterback offense, and so

(10:48):
they need him back for that game. If he's not back for that game,
then I could I'm not sure whathe would do. All right,
You ready to talk about Navy ordid you still want to talk about anything
else with North Carolina? No,that's fine. Um, not a whole
lot. The defense, I mean, obviously they gave up some plays,
but they also made some big plays. Ms Klin does have a good quarterback.

(11:11):
Howell is very good quarterback, andso yeah, I went back and
forth, got close at times, but I thought they did a good job.
Isaiah Fosky still he got half asack this game, so he's still
on pace to possibly break that singleseason record. But um so, it
does taper off at the end ofthe years he wears down as well.

(11:33):
But just the defense is I thinknow that they know how to play,
not having Kyle Hamilton out, it'llbe completely different. You can basically throw
this Navy game out the window.I mean, never Dame. I actually
want to go back how much Hamiltonactually played versus Navy. Like how they
use different guys for the Navy. We've seen it the last few years.

(11:54):
They use different even a different personnel. Um So, I think they'll do
a good job getting ready for that. But it will definitely they'll definitely be
more wear and tear on the team. All right, So, uh,
Notre Dame or NABE comes to NotreDame. This is man. It seems
like it seems like there's been aboutfour out of five home games so far

(12:16):
this season. For four or fivegames, I mean, it seems like
they've been home games. Another homegame, three thirty, kickoff number eight,
Notre Dame hosting the two and sixShipman. I know Navy hasn't been
as good as they had been inyears past the last few years. Are
they do you think they're worse thanthey actually were even the last two years?

(12:39):
They come in, they're scoring eighteenpoints a game, they're giving up
thirty. The spread is twenty anda half points. So this is I
think as bad a Navy team aswe've seen probably the last ten years.
Yeah, they're not good, andI wish we could have kept them off
the schedule after last not playing thelast last year, but um, they're
still they're They're on the schedule,And no, this is not a good

(13:03):
Navy team at all. So Ithink Notre Dame they have learned how to
play Navy, and I think they'lldo a really good job and this won't
even he won't even be close.Um, but I haven't watched them this
year. I just I hate watchingthem play football. So I'm not gonna

(13:24):
go sit there and watch Navy playfootball because I don't like watching triple option.
Um I haven't, I haven't actuallywatched them either, but I did.
I was keeping track of you knowwho they play, their their wins
losses throughout the year. They werewithin seven of Cincinnati a few weeks ago.
Oh yeah, I did see that. Um, but then they're they're
two wins are against UCF thirty fourthirty win in week four, and then

(13:46):
last week they did beat Tulsa twentyto seventeen. So but yeah, as
far as this matchup with Notre Dame, I mean, I don't think there's

(14:07):
a whole lot, a whole lotreally that interesting to talk about. To
be honest, we will give ourwe'll give our score predictions. Frankly,
he talked again about I guess thisis something that I'm not sure I agree
with. Brank Kelly. He talkedabout how he talked about how they want
to have long drives. Obviously Navytakes takes a lot of time off the

(14:30):
clock, and I think I heardhim right say that that they they don't
want they want their offense to beefficient. They don't want to have fast
drives. They want to have long, methodical, drawn out drives to take
series away from Navy. Did youdid I hear that right? I think
I mean he said that before againstNavy, like they want to do,
that's what they want to do.You got to keep it out of the
hands of Navy because maybe we'll justeat up the clock. And so they

(14:52):
try to do it right back athim, I was thinking other years he
was talking about. Obviously, efficiencyis the mo it's important thing. You
have to score on your possessions becauseyou won't have very many. But for
some reason I thought that he wasmore of a proponent of getting more serious
if possible, by by shortening theamount of time if possible, while still

(15:16):
staying optimized for efficiency. And thetruth is this name offense is better when
it's a little bit up tempo. So I think Nor Dame could be in
trouble if they do try to slowit down too much. But they have
been getting putting together a long drive. So but they've been worried, is
I was? They've they've been puttingtogether a long drives, but they've still
stayed fast paced. And if youget Jack Cohen out of a rhythm,

(15:39):
if you get him behind the chainsand have a have a play where his
opening read isn't there, he's notable to get rid of the ball.
Quickly ends up taking a sack.Your drive is going to be pretty much
be over. So I do thinkit's important that Nor Dame doesn't trying to
get fancying, to keep on playingwhat's been working the last two weeks,
like stay with the fast paced offense, keep things moving, clipping, and

(16:04):
keep the defense on their heels.Yeah, I agree, all right,
score prediction, man, I thinkit's going to end up being I'm going
with thirty four seventeen. All right, Well, we both have Nordame at
this at the same same score.I've got you said, thirty four seventeen.

(16:26):
Yeah, write that down. I'vegot Nordame thirty four and I've got
Navy. I think they really aregoing to struggle to score. They're just
they're not they don't score a lotof points. I think I'm going to
go thirty four ten. I justalways look at that this is one of
their This is a big game forNavy, it's Notre Dame, so I

(16:51):
usually tend to give them a fewmore points than I would if it was
a different, you know, adifferent opponent, because this is kind of
like a bowl game to them aswell. M h, alright, anything
else? Randal not really, stilltrying to stop my hiccups, so I
apologize. Well, you made itthrough, a good job. Thank you
guys for listening. Until next time, go irish, go Irish.
