Speaker 1 (00:02):
The Dallas Cowboys Present. These boots are made for talking.
The official podcast of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. No your
hosts Courtney McKenna and Shannon Gross heyo, Hello Monday. Hi. Hello.

(00:23):
Oh you gotta put your mouth like really uncomfortably close.
No closer? Oh okay? Oh hello? Hello, everyone's testing one three. Hi.
Welcome to the show this Monday. Getting in the holiday spirit. Yeah,
I feel like an idiot if you can watch this
at home. Kira and Selena, how are y'all good? Great?

(00:47):
So we all have festive things on? All I had
in my closet, Courtney texted me this morning. All I
had was a stone cold Steve Austin ugly sweatshirts. So
I'm wearing that. What are you wearing on your head? Um?
Lovely festive Christmas tree. It's fabulous too, thank you? And
what are you wearing on your head? Have rain deer ears?

(01:08):
And oh there we go, rain deer ears and yeah,
I'm gonna be rain deer today. Yeasty. Trusty Santa Claus
over here, Yeah, don't go wrong with that. And Selena
are boring. We just have Santa that's still boring. It's
still festive. Totally boring. It's it's a cop out. It's so,
what's up. How are y'all good? Yeah? Victory minding Cowboys

(01:29):
one who yes, still still have play off I've got
them barely gree that it isn't strong. Big game coming
up Sunday, Christmas Eve or y'all bummed or excited to
be cheering on Christmas Eve? I'm excited. This is, like,
you know, my first time, so I'm like, whooo, like
bring it on. Yeah. It's kind of a little bit

(01:50):
of both. Because it's Christmas, it's gonna be a great halftime,
but it's also our last season old games, so it's
kind of kind of different, kind a bitter sweet, but
we're excited, probably the last home game of the season. Yeah,
So this is your two for you, Selena, I can't
hear yep, and you're a rookie. Yes, What has been
your favorite memory so far this year? I'm performing for Thanksgiving.

(02:14):
That's been my favorite. I don't know. I just like
to perform and like being on stage and actually having
lights like head us. It just like took me back
to the old days when I used to perform and
um do competition, So it was great. It felt good. Yeah,
and speaking of the old days. So I tell us,
tell us where you're from, how you got here, how
long you've been cheering, what your style of dances? And

(02:36):
then what made you? Okay, I've got it. So I'm
from Mesquite taxes. Um oh local girl, Yes, you know,
suburbs of Dallas. So I've been dancing. Wait a minute,
you're from Mosquite and you have all of your teeth?
What is going on in here? Okay, I don't know
the tereotypes, but I kill that is for oh, my bad,
my bad. Okay, my ex girlfriend was from Mesquite. That's

(02:57):
why I had to throw that in there. So she
have all her teeth? Yeah she did, she did. Okay,
I don't believe it. If you're calling them out like that,
I agree. Um So, I've been dance since I was three.
Um basically went to college dance. Um So, I was like,
the only next best thing to do is biodowska with
t other So tried out. I tried out four times

(03:19):
and this year I made it. And I don't know,
it's been it's been awesome. You tried out four times,
this was your fourth time. This is my fourth time.
Not know that how far along did you make it
in the audition process the other times? Um? Just to
um SIMI I think Simi connals Yes, so Um, I
tried out when I was eighteen, right after high school,
and then right after I graduated from college, and then

(03:39):
the year after. Let me ask you this. So there's
probably a lot of girls that have tried out once
and not tried out again, or girls that have tried
out a couple of times and then finally gave up.
What did you do different to make it that you
didn't do the previous three times? I actually like worked
out and made sure I was in like the best
shape of my life coming out of LSU. I kind

(03:59):
of thought like I was already like fit enough. But
let's be honest, M dallaskyway, chillers are the best of
the best, So you have to be at your best.
And I will say, coming into this tryouts, I feel
like I was at my best. So I feel like
that's definitely a difference. Shout out to louis Do you
know I'm from Louisiana? No, from West Monroe? Really? Yes?
So did you Why didn't you go to LSU? Because

(04:21):
I stayed at ULM and just went to Ellis, who's
the worst? She doesn't count. So Selena's second year, right,
second year. What was the biggest difference between year one
and year two? Mm? I think it was kind of
being in the know. Is my second year with my
job as well as DCC, So it was kind of

(04:44):
knowing what to expect and how to handle yourself and
how to be more of a leader and help your
teammates out and be more of a team player. Who's
who's your best friend on the team? Oh? I have
so many. I'm friends with everyone. You know, this really
is didn't see this of course coming I know, right,
this is really a different organization. And so that we're

(05:04):
all best friends. I mean, we experienced something and at
the end of the year you'll get a pinky ring
and it just kind of embodies everything that we've done together.
And so we are kind of all best friends. But
I would say I am really close to Kaylin and
Kelly and you go. Kaylin and I also cheered for

(05:24):
a team out mesquite before it became going into Dallas,
and so we did an arena cheer team and it
kind of gave us the experience and the motivation to
come back and try out for DCC. So we've kind
of been through this process together. A ringer. Yeah, so
you're from Where are you from? Say Antonio? Okay, how
long you've been in Dallas? This is my third year
in Dallas. So did you move to Dallas before you auditioned?

(05:47):
I moved to Dallas when I went to training camp
for DCC the very first time, made it through training
camp and then didn't make the team. So I stayed here,
worked hard, joined another team and was under the guidance
of a former cheerleader my Hay, and then did DCC again,
made it and now this is my second year. Ah,
so you both didn't make it, so you're both very
persistent women. Yes, that's awesome. That is awesome. So anyone

(06:11):
out there that has ever tried anything and quit, don't
don't give up. Don't give up on your area. But
I feel like it gives you a different kind of
appreciation when you don't make it like the first time,
and you actually work hard and earn your spot and
not obviously like the girls who made it first try
like it was ever handed to them, right, But you

(06:31):
know what it's like to be told no and want
something even more definitely. And I think that's what's so
great about having this platform too, is being able to
tell other girls that and just tell them to keep
reaching for their dreams and their goals. So that's been
if everybody made it on their first try, to be boring,
I agree, I don't know about that. I kind of
like making things on my first try. Okay, Well, everybody

(06:53):
who's watching and those who are listening, we will tell
you that we're kind of ducked out in some festive years.
So in light of the holiday season, Laura Eller on
Facebook wants to know what's the worst Christmas gift you've
ever received? The worst? Are there such things as bad gifts? Yes? Yes,
okay or yeah definitely, because sometimes you also want something

(07:16):
and then it's just like a big left down. But
if you need a moment to think, I'll start the
ball rolling and then you guys can chime in. So
you know how you normally save like a present you've
been eyeing for like last Yeah, like you're like, oh,
that one's big, it looks awesome, Like this is gonna
be great. My parents are probably gonna listen and kill me.
But I saw this present, I was like, gotta wake
out a way and so it was last present. I

(07:36):
opened it up. I'm so excited. It's a dish set.
Oh like eight plates, eight bowls, eight mugs, And I
was like, thank you? Are you kidding me? Like, this
is what I'm getting for Christmas? Dishes? I was genuinely
so mad. But now I appreciate it now that I
live alone and had to have my apartment furnished and
all of that. It was a worth while gifts and

(07:59):
they were right. But in the moment when you're in
college and you're like, why are you giving me dishes?
That sounds very selfish. There's some people that can't even
afore food and you're mad because you got a eight
place dish set. Yeah, well was it nice? Full little
brattle brat I did? It wasn't on my list to Santa.
And also one year in elementary school we had secret Santa,

(08:23):
and my secret Santa gave him a stop Watch, so
that wasn't the best together. Okay, I can't say that
I've had a bad one because I don't know. I
try to take everything and do something with it. I'm
someone there, you go, I don't I'm kind of a hoarder.
I don't like to throw things away, so I know
that eventually one day I could use it. But I
will tell you a story. When I was little, me
and my brother used to cut out little pictures from

(08:45):
a Toys r US magazine and put it in a
baggy and send it to Santa. One year, my brother
opened up a present and he it was like an
Elmo and he was so sad and he's like, this
is not what I asked from Santa. And we realized
that the backside side of it is what he really wanted.
But on the other side it was a different toy.
So but now we knew after that we'd x out

(09:08):
the other side. Kind of think. Um, no, I mean
my aunt gave me an eye eyehop, um gift card.
Don't eat eyehop. I mean I feel like I tell
them what to get me and then they get it,
so I won't Who's they we're talking about Santa? Who's
you know? Santa is like family? So yeah, what about
best gift you a favorite? Yeah, that's a good one

(09:31):
or most memorable. Um let's see. Oh last year, my
parents they got it good. Um they gave me a
DCC barbie and um it was it was d entity
UM colored, so it was kind of cool because most
of the barbies are kind of blonde and different, and
I have burnette hair, so it was really cool. And

(09:53):
usually you only get a DCC barbie at tryouts, from
auditions and a solo and um. Growing up, I had
a barbie for every Easter, every Birthday, every Christmas, and
so I hadn't had barbies and years, and so they
gave me once. It was really special. That's cool. Had
they been to a lot of games? They have, Yeah,
it's nice than being here in Texas. They'll drive down
and it's a long trip for them, but they'll come

(10:14):
to Thanksgiving and pregame and the first home opener. So
it's really fun to have them about you your family
being in Mesquite. Do they come to a lot of games, Yes,
for the most part, but my dad thinks he just
has more fun at home. He says he can go
get beer when he wants to and he didn't have
to wait in line and restrooms. Traffic, yes, traffic, so

(10:35):
but yeah, they've come to most of them this year.
But my favorite gift was a It was a prayer
journal that my mom got me and I write it
in every morning, and it's just kind of one of
those things to like, you know, get the day started right.
But yeah, I would say that's like my best gift
that I've ever received. All yours are sentimental. Mine was

(10:56):
like a furbie growing up. Oh no, furbie when we
were younger. Those are like the things that flew off
the shelves, like you couldn't just go and buy it. Yeah,
I got a Furby that was one of the best ones.
And I got a bike one year or two. I
remember loving my bike. Yeah, you guys are sentimental, making
me look horrible over here. I'm not a spoiled brat.
What was your Shannon? Yeah? But best or worst both. Yes,

(11:18):
there's no such thing as a bad gifts someone unless
they try to buy you like a crappy gift on purpose.
But like if somebody buys you something, they take the
time to, like put time and energy into giving you something.
I think that's there are such a part of bad gift.
I agree. I just think that it's you're looking at
the wrong way. Man. Now, I appreciate the dishes, but
in the moment, but in the moment when you're eighteen

(11:41):
years old, you don't want to open up a dish
set that you're going to keep at home until you move.
So it stayed in my closet at home for a
couple of years and now it's here and I appreciate
a bout. Yeah. Best gift was probably I got a
guitar one year that I barely know how to play.
Like I my goal this year. The years almost over,
So my goal the next two weeks a couple of

(12:05):
a couple of hours a week playing the guitar. Do
y'all play any instruments? No, no time for that nonsense.
So what do y'all do? Both of you work? Yes?
What are your jobs? I'm in real estate. I've been
doing it for two years. Um, I sell residential real estate. UM,
I'm not really unto leasing. I did leasing for a
little bit, but now I'm just more into cells and

(12:27):
um buys. Um I will purchases that I would say, um.
But yeah, I like real estate. It's easy breezy. It's
basically creating relationships and having people like you, and I
feel like I'm kind of easy to talk to and
it's kind of easy breezy. Like I said, would you
major in college sports administration? Okay? I thought I wanted
to be a sports agent. Um. Then I got out,

(12:49):
did some internships. I realized that it's kind of like
babysitting grow men. So then I decided maybe not so much. UM,
let's try something else. Um. And then yeah, then I
took the real estate tesk. I'm my license ends and
been doing it ever since. Cool. And what do you
do for kindergarten teachers? Oh? Really? She started break officially
today I did. It was awesome, It's amazing. I got

(13:10):
to sleep in that's cool. You know. I substituted for
about six months back home. Wow, crazy story, Like I
so I wanted to teach. I wanted to teach and coach.
And then I realized like teachers didn't take coaches serious
and the teaching professions. So I was like, you know,
I really think I'd rather teach more than I would coach.
So then I was going to teach. I said, let

(13:30):
me make sure I want to do this, because back
then you made like twenty three thousand dollars a year
in Louisiana being a full time teacher. And I was like,
I'm going to be really broke if I do this,
So let me make sure I want to do it.
So I substituted for about six months and it was
always high school in middle school. And then one day
I got a call and they would call you a
like six thirty in the morning. They'd be like, Hey,
here's the school you're going to, but here's here's the
principal blah blah blah. And they call me there like

(13:52):
it's a kindergarten class and they've never the only man
in the whole school is the janitor. It's all the
vice principal. All the teachers were women. Wow. So I
showed up and it was like kindergarten copy. It was
so awesome. They were hanging on me like in class
and like at Recess, the whole school was like around me.
It was the most and they were like you a

(14:13):
guy teacher and I was like yes, and they were
like oh wow, and it was just like it was
the coolest thing. And then I wound up not being
a teacher. Yeah, but it was cool though. It was
so awesome. Now I was like, you know what, I
kind of like to do elementary school because kindergarteners are
so cute and funny. They're burst of energy. You definitely
have to have the energy to match them and outsource

(14:34):
them and make sure they're interested. But it's they're a
lot of fun. They teach me a lot, and so
I tried to teach them, but they teach me a
lot of life lessons too. So very cool. So do
y'all live? Do you have roommates? No? I have a roommate. Yeah.
I actually met her in college and decided to live
here in Dallas. So okay. I didn't know if y'all
roomed with somebody on the team a lot of I
didn't realize how many girls room with other girls that

(14:55):
are on the team until we started the show. Yeah,
and every show I'm like, wow, but I'm at Calliss's
house a lot, just because she loves in Frisco. But
is that your best friend? Um? I would say, she's
like my best rookie friend. And then like, my best
friend on the team is Kurston because I cheered with Kirsten,
like oh yes, and then I've been dancing with her
since like fifth grade. Two. We run the same dance company.

(15:17):
Beyond Belief. We went to America's Got Talent together. Yeah,
we've kind of had the same resume. Kindest in America's
got a talent. Yes, Oh my gosh, do not go
back and look at it. They like zoom in on
my face saying what did y'all do? Okay, And so
when was it? I was in two thousand and eight. Um,
we had like our whole dance company. It was like,
I would say, like twenty of us and we made

(15:38):
it to the top twenty two. We went to La
went to Vegas. It was awesome. But my my memory
of America's Got Talent is, um, they were like ferocious makeup.
It's just awful makeup. They zoom in on my face.
I have braces, my hair is like awful. Oh my gosh.
It was just it was bad. But um, but yeah,

(15:59):
but Curson definitely will be like is like the best
friend overall. So that was like nine years ago. Yeah,
but were you a sophomore in high school? Freshman? No,
I was a freshman. We missed our first week of
high school having to be in La. Yeah, to shoot
the show. But that's a cool memory. Yeah, worth it definitely,
But yeah, it was. It was funny. But do not
go back and look at those you know video everybody

(16:24):
pull it up right now, No, please do not. Yes,
what's the name of your dance studio again, Beyond Belief
dance company? Unbelief? Is that what it was called? Yes?
Oh my gosh, they zooming on my face, y'all. I'm
telling you right now, you won't even recognize me. Like
you know, I still kind of had like little baby
fat and braces, Oh my gosh. And then I had
a wig on too, like I wasn't wearing my hair
and it was flipped out. Oh it was awful. I'm

(16:47):
not even joking. I can't wait to see this. No,
So what why she's looking that up? What is? What's
the man situation like in both of your lives? That's
my that's my go to question, best friend and men.
I believe we're both single and happy single indeed of it. Yeah, yeah,
we're busy ladies. We have two jobs and give everything

(17:07):
and devote all our time to it. Yeah. Indeed, it's
tough man when you're in sports, even like obviously I'm
not a cheerleader. Y'all work way harder than I do.
But it's tough man when you're around especially when you're
around this environment and there's so much going on, and
like you really enjoy what you do, Like that's where
all your energy goes to. And it's like your you date,
your job, like that's you know, when somebody comes along, yeah,

(17:30):
you can kind of fit them in. But it's kind
of like I'm good right now, Like yeah, what about
you Bill thets come on? Anybody's gonna put up with me?
I don't know, like really no, there's no way now.
But I mean it's I mean it's tough because like
we travel so much and then it and then especially
you know, whenever I was more involved with you guys
before Courtney came along, Like I was at all your events,

(17:52):
you know, cheerleader calendar, and it's kind of like it
takes a special woman that'd be secure enough to go, Okay,
he's traveling every weekend for football. Okay, he's going to
hang out with twenty gorgeous women in Paradise for ten days.
So it takes Yeah, it takes a very unique person.
So but I just really don't have time, Like I
just love football, and when football season not in, I

(18:14):
like to travel and go do whatever. And I'm just
very selfish with my time. So okay, well, your outfits
they were black. I found like a couple there's like
one that looks like some type of black bottom and
like leather, like getting it. Yes, well, I don't know.
It was like we had all different outfits on. Okay,

(18:36):
this looks like it. Oh gosh, yeah, we'll have to look.
Was there a guy on there? Yes, there was Tory. Yeah,
only guy someone does like round off two back handspring, yes, flips, Yes,
we had a production that's what. Oh David Hasselhoff is
a judge. Yes. Oh, oh gosh, okay, well I kind
of thought they would have taken that off YouTube by now,
but that's not so what did you what did you YouTube?

(18:58):
Just in case somebody on YouTube? I googled America's Got
Talent Beyond Belief two thousand and eight. Yeah, look it
at people. Please do not tweet at her. We'll look
at it after the show. We'll look at it in
varied with audio detail. Yes, So, any any fan questions
over there? Yeah? Well I asked Laurs earlier, and then

(19:21):
I guess this would be for you low she pointed
at Sea by the way, Selena, because you haven't had
this opportunity yet. They wanted to know what your favorite
alternative uniform is, because last year you got to wear
a lot of them, the breast cancer, Halloween, Christmas, I
think definitely Christmas. It's fun, it's festive. It's so much

(19:42):
fun to be out there during halftime too. Halloween's fun,
but it's more like scary and nets and white and
so this is cute, and the greatest part about it
is we get to wear it for the last half
of the game, so it's fun. We'll do our traditional
uniform in the beginning and then we change during halftime
and we keep it on for the rest of the game.
So it's cute. Get some cute pictures and tell everybody

(20:03):
a little bit about the halftime because that's this game, right, Yes,
are you ready? Yes? Yes, I need to practice today,
but yeah, I'm going to be ready. Yeah, I just
practiced today. It is it's a lot, it's a long halftime.
It's basically like our pregame but in Christmas words, my
pregame times for it. But yeah, it's two kick lines

(20:24):
and it's yeah, it's really cute. It's fine. That's awesome.
So y'all don't know about this yet. I think I'm
going to spill the beans. Oh please, do we have
We have a call tomorrow afternoon to make to finalize it.
But Snapchat, I think is sending out someone and you
guys are going to be featured on their homepage story. Yeah,
that's exciting. We're trying to we're trying to do is

(20:45):
get them out here early from the Christmas Spectacular and
cover It's gonna be like a twenty four hours in
the day of in the Life of a DCC. So
they would start covering y'all that night and then ride
the bus with y'all to the game, kind of do
what Courtney does, but for Snapchat exclusively. Well, they're not
gonna be cooler than right, No, no, not at all. No, no,
we do a better job. But then they would follow
y'all on game day, follow you through like outfit changes

(21:07):
at halftime, and then follow you like through the end
of the game. So we have hopefully it hopefully it happens. Yeah, well,
the only reason why I brought it up on this
show is because this is the last show before it's
supposed to happen. So it's supposed to happen Saturday night
and then the games Sunday, So hopefully that happens. It'll
be really they they've done it with one other cheer team.
It was the Chargers because they're in LA right down

(21:27):
the street. Okay, so they were like, hey, let's try this,
and then whenever it kind of it was one of
their most viewed stories and they were like, uh, well,
if if it worked for them, let's do it for Yeah. Yeah,
so that'd be really cool. So if it happens, everybody
that's listening to make sure you check out snapchat to
see if it winds up on their one of their homepage.
So it should be really cool. Yeah, Christmas Eve, if

(21:50):
you needed a reminder of when the game is, yep,
four still got playoff shot. Oh before we go, we
only have a few minutes. Who's your favorite current former player?
Let's see. I guess dak. I mean I feel like
he's he's the leader of the team. He kind of
just I know, he shows up and shows out and

(22:11):
that's kind of what you need. You need to get
leader to lead you through the game. So yeah, dak ye.
Who's your favorite former Mike Michael Irving, just because I
love that he's so motivational and like, oh my gosh,
every time I see him he has his phone. He's
like yo, like this, I don't know, I just I
love his like energy, so definitely him. What about you, seam.

(22:34):
My former player would definitely be Emmett Smith. I think
growing up I became a Cowboys fan because of my
parents and my family, and I think that was probably
one of my dad's favorite players. So it's kind of
cool to be I'm a nineties kid, so in that
era when he was incredible and all time rushing, so
that was really cool. Dez Bryant for my current I
think he's an incredible player, great wide receiver, and it's

(22:55):
just really fun to watch him and he always comes
out for the team awesome. Well I told you it
was gonna go by quick, my gosh, too quick? Right, Yeah,
I agree. Watch that video though, an I'm going to
watch that. Yes, no word and this Curson and Curson's
persons in and two Yes, shout out Curson, welcome. Definitely
about to watch Harry Christmas. Yes, so, Kira Selena, thank

(23:19):
you guys for coming by. Hopefully we can have you
guys on another time before before or by the way,
are y'all re auditioning or definitely yeah? Both, Yeah, we
have two commitments. Most people are like, ah, well, we'll
see I don't know, so you guys are in Yes, definitely.
Everybody cool like swimwear, and like swimwear in there, like swimwear. Hey,

(23:47):
William just played his first drop, but it go William. No,
he's done the woo what the cheering? That doesn't count.
That's like the standard for every show. So well, Courtney,
thanks for showing up. Thanks ladies, thanks for stopping by.
Everybody tune in Saturday or Sunday, Sunday, the twenty fourth
Christmas half Happy early Holidays, Happy early Holidays. We won't

(24:10):
be back till after New Year's yeah, because both holidays
are Mondays. Yea, So after New Year's we'll be back
on These boots are made for talking. This has been
a production of Dallas Cowboys dot Com and the Dallas
Cowboys Football Club.
