Trying to decide between launching a podcast or writing a book? Here’s how to choose the right path for maximum impact.

Someone recently booked a free podcast coaching call with me, and this is exactly the question she was trying to figure out: should she write a book or start a podcast first?

She had big ideas to share, but limited time and energy. Should she invest it in launching a podcast or finally writing that book she’d been thinking about?

It’s a fair question. And like so many things in business, the answer is: it depends.

In this episode, I walk you through what you need to consider before making your decision and reveal the advice I gave her. And no, it wasn't a self-serving 'podcast, of course!'

Here are a few of the key things you need to explore before deciding on the right choice for you:

  1. Where you are in clarifying your message

  2. Whether or not you already have an audience

  3. What you want this content to do for your business and brand

  4. If you’ve got any external deadlines (like a publisher)

  5. And, of course, your actual capacity (because both DO take time and energy)

This advice isn't off the cuff.

I’ve worked with clients who started with a book and then launched a podcast to support it. Others who started a podcast first and then realized they’ve got a book’s worth of content sitting in their episodes.

And some do both (strategically), so they’re aligned and reinforcing each other.

The key is to zoom out, get clear on your goals, and choose the path (or combo) that makes the most sense for where you are now and where you want to go.

If you’re wondering whether podcasting should be part of your content strategy, or you want help mapping out how it fits with your book plans, I’ve got your back.
