Hij begon zijn potjes tegen semiprofs als Quick Boys en IJsselmeervogels en werd pas op zijn veertiende opgepikt door een betaald voetbalorganisatie: FC Volendam. De geboren De Rijper was dus niet het typische talent waarvan iedereen al vroeg kon zien: ‘dat wordt er eentje’. De stap van IJsselmeervogels-uit naar het Etihad en San Siro is enorm. Maar hij maakte hem wel: Gijs Smal. Of soms Smaldini of Smaldinho, zoals tegen zijn oude club afgelopen weekend.
