 Deuteronomy 31, & 34:10-12, Joshua 1 & 2

I respect each family's ages & stages of life so I have adapted some of this. PLEASE go back and read the scripture yourself including what is appropriate for your family. If you’ve missed the Exodus series, please go back and listen as they build upon each other.

Today we hear Moses dies at 120 yrs old and Joshua takes over leading the people. God reminds them over and over again to not be afraid... that HE will be with them wherever they go. The people prepare to enter Jericho but 2 spies assess the land first and they receive help from Rahab. Rahab has heard of God's mighty works and offers to help them. We apply the truth that God is  with us too; even on those sad or frustrating days, God is with us!  We can be encouraged as Joshua was.

Thanks for tuning in. We are just about done with our Exodus series and we hope you've enjoyed them.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello again, and welcome back to kids' Bible stories. Today
is part nineteen in our Exodus series and is called
The Lord, Your God will be with you wherever you go.
This comes from Deuteronomy chapter thirty one, Chapter thirty four,
verses ten through twelve, and Joshua chapters one and two.

(00:28):
I respect each family's ages and stages of life, so
I have adapted some of this. Please go back and
read the scriptures yourself, including what is appropriate for your family.
If you've missed the Exodus series, I'd highly recommend you
go back and listen as they build upon themselves. Last
week we heard the twelve spies sent to check out

(00:51):
the promised land God was going to give them. However,
ten of the spies returned, telling the Israelites that they
should not enter the land. Hearing this report, some of
the Israelites doubted God's promise about the land because of

(01:12):
their unbelief. They will have to wander in the desert.
Forty years. Is that a long time? Yep, yes, it is.
That's probably longer than some of your parents have been alive.
So they've been wandering and wandering. Here is where we

(01:39):
pick up our story. Moses went out and spoke these
words to all of Israel.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
I am now one hundred and twenty years old, and
I am no longer able to lead you the Lord.
He has said to me that I will not cross
the Jordan. But the Lord your God himself will cross
over ahead of you, and he will destroy these nations

(02:13):
before you, and you will take possession of their land.
And Joshua will also cross over ahead of you, as
the Lord said, and the Lord will do to them
what he did to the kings of the Amorites, whom
he destroyed, along with their land. The Lord will deliver

(02:37):
them to you. So be strong and courageous. Do not
be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord
your God goes with you, and he will never leave
you nor forsake you.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in front
of every one, so they would hear.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
Be strong and be courageous, for you must go with
these people into the land that the Lord swore to
their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it
among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before
you and will be with you. He will never leave

(03:25):
you nor forsake, you do not be afraid and do.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Not be discouraged.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Listeners, Moses is stepping down as their leader. Answer out aloud,
who is going to be the leader now, Joshua, very good.
Moses has led God's people for years and years and
years now. It hasn't all been easy either, But God

(04:03):
loved Moses, and Moses loved God. If you want to
hear why he doesn't get to enter the Promised Land,
go to your Bible and read Numbers chapter twenty. At
the age of one hundred and twenty years old, Moses dies.

(04:27):
The Israelites mourn. The Bible describes Moses beautifully in Deuteronomy
chapter thirty four, verses ten through twelve. Let's hear what
it says about Moses. Since then, no prophet has risen

(04:49):
in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.
Who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent
him to do in Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all
his officials, and to his whole land. For no one
has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome

(05:13):
deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Moses was an incredible man. After the death of Moses,
the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Moses, my servant is dead. Now, then you and all
these people get ready to cross the Jordan River into
the land I am about to give them. I will
give you every place where you set your foot, as
I promise to Moses. No one will be able to

(06:06):
stand against you all the days of your life, as
I was with Moses, so I will be with you.
I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong
and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit
the land I swore to their ancestors. Be careful to

(06:32):
obey all the law my servant Moses gave you. Do
not turn from it to the right or to the left,
that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this
book of the Law always on your lips. Meditate on
it day and night, so that you may be careful

(06:56):
to do everything written within it. Then ye you will
be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you be
strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.
The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
So Joshua ordered the officers of the.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
People go through the camp and tell the people to
get their provisions ready. Three days from now they will
cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of
the land. The Lord your God is giving you for
your own.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
The people obeyed and began to gather supplies. Weapons were readied,
and bags were being secured to carry what they would
need to cross into the Promise Land. While the Israelites prepared,

(08:06):
Joshua secretly sent two spies, telling them, hey, you.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Too, go look over the land, especially Jericho.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
The spies quietly crept out, and once in the land,
they entered the house of a woman named Rayhab. Here
they would hide out. But even though they were hiding
and trying their best to be quiet, someone must have

(08:43):
found out, because the King of Jericho was told.

Speaker 5 (08:49):
Huh oh, no, some of those Israelites have come out
here tonight to spy out the land.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Seeing no time, the King of Jericho sent this message
to Rahab.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
Bring out the men who came to you and entered
your house, because they have come here to spy out
this whole place.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
But Rayhab she had taken the two men and hidden them.
The king's men told Rayhab oh hello, can I help you?

Speaker 4 (09:31):
You hand them over? We know they're here.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Oh well, yes, the men came to me, but I
did not know where they had come from. And at dusk,
when it was time to close the city gate, they left.
I don't know which way they went. You better go
after them quickly. You may catch up with them. St

(09:57):
She had taken them up to the roof and hidden
them under the stalks of flax she had laid out
on the roof. Once Rahab closed the door, the king's
men turned and set out in pursuit of the spies.

Speaker 5 (10:20):
Okay, boys, keep a call's eye out.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
They gonna be here somewhere.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Back at Rahab's house, the spies were about to lay
down for the night. Rahab climbed up on the roof
and told them, I know that the Lord has given
you this land, and that a great fear of you

(10:51):
has fallen on us, so that all who live in
this country we are melting in fear because of you.
We have heard how the Lord dried up the water
of the Red Sea for you when you came out
of Egypt, and how you defeated the two kings of

(11:11):
the Amorites. When we heard of it. Our hearts melted
in fear, and everyone's courage failed because of you. For
the Lord, your God is God in heaven above and
on earth below. Now, then, please swear to me by

(11:32):
the Lord that you will show kindness to my family
because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a
sure sign that you will not hurt us when your
group enters into our land. Our lives for your lives,
the men promised her. If you don't tell what we
are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when

(11:55):
the Lord gives us the land. Very carefully, She then
let them down by a rope through the window, for
the house she lived in was part of the city wall,
who the spies had not been discovered thanks to rehab. Quietly,

(12:22):
as not to draw attention, she said to them, pste
go to the hills so they will not find you.
Hide yourselves there for three days until they return, and
then go on your way. The man replied, this promise

(12:44):
you made us won't work unless when we enter the
land you have tied this scarlet cord in the window
that you let us down from. Bring all of your
family into your house and they will be safe when
we returned to take the land. But if you tell

(13:04):
what we are doing, we will be released from this promise,
she replied, nodding her head firmly. Let it be as
you say. So she sent them away. She set to

(13:25):
work and tied the scarlet cord in the window. The
spies went down out of the hills, crossed the river,
and came to Joshua. Somewhat out of breath from their journey.
They told him everything that had happened to them. The Lord,

(13:50):
the Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands.
All the people are melting in fear because of us. Well,
that is it for our story today. But before we go,

(14:13):
let's think about what we've just heard. Was God always
with them wherever they went? Yes, yep, yep, we hear God.
Tell Joshua, be.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Strong and courageous, Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged.
The Lord, your God will be with you wherever you go.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Listeners, remember the spies last week, how they said there
were so many of their enemies in the promised Land. Yes,
that was true, But we hear God remind them in
today's story that He will go before them and help
them defeat these enemies. Keeping his promise that they will

(15:05):
inherit the land. God kept his promise, and even Rahab said,
I know that the Lord has given you this land
for the Lord your God is God in heaven above

(15:25):
and on earth below. Do you think God is always
with you? Yes? But what about hard days or frustrating
days or sad days?

Speaker 4 (15:43):
Is He with you?

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Then? Yep? He sure is. I hope today's story encourages you,
just as Joshua was encouraged that God will be with
you wherever you go. Well, that is it for today's story.

(16:06):
Tune in next week to hear what happens. Will they
defeat the strong city of Jericho? Will they keep their
promise to Rehab who helped them. Stay tuned to hear
the closing of our Exodus series, and as always, bye
for now
