Napoleon var godt træt af sin upålidelige russiske allierede og indledte i sommeren 1812 et gigantisk felttog ind i Rusland med ikke mindre end 600.000 soldater. Men de mange soldater var ikke nær så godt trænede som tidligere, og allerede i begyndelsen af felttoget begyndte de at bukke under. Samtidig gjorde russerne effektiv brug af ’den brændte jords taktik’, og da Moskva brændte ned for øjnene af Napoleon, stod det klart, at missionen var slået fejl.
Under tilbagetoget fik den hårde vinter disciplinen til at bryde sammen, og den gigantiske hær var stort set udslettet, da man kom tilbage til udgangspunktet. Det fik gamle fjender til at vejre morgenluft.
