De flotte tanker om lighed og menneskerettigheder kom til at blegne, da ikke mindre end 17.000 personer mistede hovedet i guillotinen fra efteråret 1793 til den efterfølgende sommer. Den afsatte Ludvig 16. var allerede blevet henrettet, og i oktober var det så den tidligere dronning Marie-Antoinettes tur.
Det var den nye republiks såkaldte ’Velfærdsudvalg’, der under ledelse af blandet Robespierre satte den såkaldte ’terrorpolitik’ i værk, og herefter blev der tyndet kraftigt ud blandt de nye magthaveres modstandere.
Men revolutionen har det med at æde sine egne børn, og Robespierre måtte selv lade livet i guillotinen, da han blev offer for en sammensværgelse.
