Den Franske Revolution blev båret frem af flotte idealer, men i årene omkring 1800 fik Napoleon effektivt afviklet det første forsøg på at indføre en fransk republik.
Først brugte han sin store popularitet til at udhule idealerne fra revolutionen.
I 1799 gjorde han sig selv (og med uvurderlig hjælp fra sin bror Lucien) til førstekonsul ved det såkaldte Brumaire-kup. Dermed gjorde han sig selv til Frankrig øverste leder.
Men det var ikke nok for den ærgerrige Napoleon. Efter nye sejre på slagmarken mod Østrig, tog Napoleon til Paris og lod sig krone som ’de franskes kejser’, og dermed var første franske republik endegyldigt fortid.
