Det moderne Kina blev født i den dramatiske periode fra 1911 til 1949, hvor nationalister og kommunister efterhånden kom til at udkæmpe en blodig kamp om magten.
I løbet af 1930’erne lykkedes det næsten Chiang Kai-sheks nationalister at besejre kommunisterne, som måtte begive sig ud på et 10.000 kilometer tilbagetog i 1934-1935, som siden blev kendt som Den Lange March.
Men japanernes invasion af Kina i 1937 endte formentlig med at blive de kommunistiske kineseres redning. Nationalister og kommunister skulle nu kæmpe side om side mod Japan under Anden verdenskrig, og efter de mange års hærgen var momentum skiftet. Kommunisterne stod med de stærkeste kort på hånden i borgerkrigens afsluttende fase, der endeligt endte, da Mao Zedong 1. oktober 1949 udråbte den kinesiske folkerepublik.
