I tiden efter Mao Zedongs død i 1976 gik Kina i en mere pragmatisk retning, mens økonomiske problemer i Vesten i slutningen af 1970’erne åbnede døren for, at Kina for alvor kunne indtage en rolle i det internationale spil.
Ændringer i landet skabte plads til en demokratisk bevægelse, som i løbet af 1980’erne gjorde de kommunistiske ledere tiltagende mere nervøse. Så nervøse, at de i maj 1989 indførte undtagelsestilstand i landet. Det var dog ikke nok, så den kinesiske leder Deng Xiaoping tog endnu hårdere midler i brug og beskød civile demonstranter i hvad der er blevet kendt som ’Massakren på Den Himmelske Fredsplads’.
De seneste år har Kina brugt på at markere, at den vestlige, demokratiske vej ikke er den rigtige. Billedet på Kinas kritiske tilgang til Vesten er landets nuværende leder Xi Jinping, der siden han kom til magten i 2012 har cementeret det autoritære Kinas position i den internationale magtkamp.
