La leyenda de la papisa Juana cuenta la historia de una mujer que, en el siglo IX, habría ascendido al papado bajo el nombre de Juan VIII, disfrazada de hombre. Según el relato, Juana, nacida en Maguncia, destacó desde joven por su inteligencia y ansias de conocimiento. En una época donde la educación estaba reservada a los hombres, se dice que se disfrazó para ingresar a un monasterio y luego estudiar en Atenas. Su erudición la llevó a Roma, donde, bajo apariencia masculina, escaló en la jerarquía eclesiástica hasta ser elegida papa. La historia culmina con un desenlace trágico: durante una procesión, Juana dio a luz, revelando su verdadera identidad. Indignada, la multitud la habría ejecutado. Aunque fascinante, esta historia carece de sustento histórica.
