Mark Mason (00:00):
Episode two six, three late night internet
marketing this week on the latenight internet marketing podcast
.
I'm going to talk to you aboutmy experience in a recent
coaching session, a personalcoaching session from my coach

(00:21):
to me, and my three takeawaysfrom that coaching session that
are going to help you in yourinternet business.
All this and more on the latenight internet marketing podcast
.

Announcer (00:38):
The late night internet marketing podcast right
when it's late at night.
At the end of the day, yourdreams burn in your sights.

(01:07):
Keep it up and you will findthat you're building your
business one night at a time andnow broadcasting late at night
from a little studio in the bigstate of Texas, your host, mark
Mason.

Mark Mason (01:27):
Hey, hey, hey, how is everyone doing?
I am your host, mark Mason, andI'm coming to you from the
little studio in Dallas, texas, where we're going to talk a
little bit about coaching.
You know I've talked on and offabout the value of coaching
through the years and the way Idescribe it is something I
mentioned to you before.
Here in Texas we say that youcannot read the label from

(01:51):
inside the jar, and what we meanby that is really oftentimes
you need coaching because youneed that external point of view
to help you break things down,to find the path forward.
Sometimes it is about teachingthings, because coaches have
done something before, havetraining in an area where they

(02:12):
can actually teach you something.
But I think the best coachesare the coaches that actually
help you unlock things and learnthings.
And I've had coaches throughoutmy career, both in corporate
professional coaches and mentorsand other kinds of coaches
people that my corporation paidthousands, maybe sometimes tens

(02:34):
of thousands of dollars to hire,to come in and work with me.
And I've had coaches inside myinternet business, my side
hustle, where I've worked withpeople who I have paid to help
me go from point A to point B orto unlock certain skills and
capabilities, and recently I'vebeen working with my great

(02:59):
friend, cliff Ravenscraft not asa friend, not as a peer-to-peer
relationship the way wenormally work, but with him in
the role of coach and me in therole of mentee.
And Cliff, if you're notfamiliar with his work, you can
check him out at Mindset Answer.
Man is a brilliant coach.

(03:20):
He is truly gifted and, I think, was put on this earth by God
the Almighty, to coach people, and I'm lucky enough to be able
to take advantage of that.
And we recently had a sessionwhere I was starting to get
stuck on some issues and Cliff,as my coach, helped me break

(03:43):
down some things that I wasstruggling with in bringing my
internet business forward andmeeting the very aggressive
goals that I've set for 2024.
I think it might be common forpeople to believe that just
because you have an internetbusiness podcast and you've
accomplished things in a spacethat everything is always

(04:06):
sunshine and roses, and that'sjust not the way it is.
Everyone in online businessstruggles at one time or another
with a thing, multiple thingsat once.
Sometimes things don't alwaysgo your way and if you've got
the right help wow.
It's way easier to navigatethose situations and Cliff and I

(04:29):
, in working through this things, we really had three main
points that we unpacked in this90 minute coaching session, and
so what I'd like to do in thisepisode is generalize those
points a little bit so that youcan use them in your own
situation.
So the first thing I want totalk to you about is this idea

(04:50):
that Cliff and I broke downabout values and the rules that
you have for success in your ownlife, and these values are
values that you may not evenconsciously be aware of.
Tony Robbins talks about valuesthat are things that you move

(05:12):
toward and values that you moveaway from, and Cliff actually
spent a lot of time with me,helping me understand how to
investigate these values in myown life.
These are the values that areset up in your life that help
you decide what decisions you'regoing to make, what you're

(05:35):
going to do, and sometimes it'sas simple as the values that you
have that cause you toprocrastinate.
It might be the values that youhave that cause you to choose
path A over path B, and thething is that you're not always
even conscious of these valuesthat are causing you to move

(05:56):
away from or move towardsparticular things.
So let's take an example For meparticularly.
I value certainty.
I'm a person who is interestedin certainty and stability and
repeatability.
I really want to know the kindsof things that are going to

(06:19):
happen, whether that'sfinancially or in other areas of
my life.
I really like this idea of notbeing able to fail and knowing
what the outcome is going to be.
That's a typical kind ofengineering mindset.
By the way, it's the way thatI'm programmed.
Engineers build bridges, forexample, that they know are not

(06:42):
going to fall down.
That's the whole idea ofengineering, and so I have this
value of certainty in my life, and I have many more values, and
one of the things that Cliffhelped me do is work through a
framework to understand thesethings that I value, these
values that create the recipethat I use to run my life and

(07:06):
rank them and understand whichvalues are most important and
which values are less important.
Same things for things that I'mnot willing to tolerate.
There are things in my life thatare values that I move away
from.
For example, I will move awayfrom anything that I think looks

(07:27):
sketchy or might make peoplethink that I'm not trustworthy.
Think that I'm not trustworthy.
I really don't like the idea ofsomeone thinking that I am not
a trustworthy person.
You can break that down furthertoo.
It's because I value thattrustworthiness, but it's

(07:49):
probably also because I have alittle too much emphasis that I
currently have on other people'sopinions, or at least it could
be.
So you get the idea of how youcan break down these values into
things that motivate you tomove towards something and
things that you are motivated tomove away from.

(08:12):
Now here's the thing that Cliffunlocked for me Once you
understand what your values areand don't misunderstand me, this
is a huge step.
Understanding your values is amassive unlock and a level that
you'd achieve If you were agamer.
That would be achievementunlocked and you'd have new

(08:34):
powers.
And your new powers are thatonce you understand these values
, you can start to work toeliminate or change the ones
that are not benefiting you, andnot to say about you.
Once you understand that thereare techniques and methods and

(08:59):
ways of thinking that you canuse in order to change that
value in your life so that youcan get different outcomes.
Now I am aggressivelyoversimplifying.
This is something that's taughtby Tony Robbins, but it's also
taught by Cliff Ravenscraft and, quite frankly, I get way more

(09:19):
out of it when Cliff talks aboutit.
These are the kind of thingsyou can find over at
mindsetanswermancom, but theaction for you is to think about
what motivates you to goforward and think about the
things that you're running awayfrom and examine those values
and ask whether or not those aregood values and ask whether or

(09:43):
not there's some things that youneed to start thinking about
changing that you might beputting the wrong emphasis on in
your life.
So that's the first thingvalues and your own internal
rules for success.
I think the other thing thatCliff and I talked about and God
, I have coached on thisparticular topic myself so many

(10:04):
times life is a thing that movesin seasons and life has its own
rhythm and there are realitiesthat are going to come into play
in your real life that aregoing to affect your goals.
They're going to impact yourgoals either in a good way or,

(10:27):
more often, the ones, at least,we tend to talk about they're
going to impact your goals in anegative way.
They're going to impact yourgoals in a negative way and you
need to understand and to someextent plan for the impact of
real life on your goals.
Life is seasonal and you mayhave seasons of very high

(10:50):
productivity because things arelining up in a way that allows
you to make progress on yourgoals in the way that you
expected.
And then there is going to betimes when your values that we
talked about before cause you tobe in a situation where you may
not be able to make all theprogress that you needed to make

(11:10):
or that you expected to make, and that might be okay when you
look at these values.
For example, for me, familycommitments and engagement in
the life of my children is superhigh on my list of values.
Things that I'm trying to be,the dad that I want to be right,
that's super high on my list.

(11:32):
And the practical implicationsof that is I spend a lot of time
helping kids with homework, going to sporting events, and
oftentimes I'm doing thatinstead of things like recording
this very podcast episode.
Let's be clear If there's aone-to-one choice where I've got

(11:54):
to decide about being late, getting a podcast episode out or
helping my daughter pass hermath exam, I'll spend five hours
working on whatever algebraproblem that she's got,
polynomial equations or whatevershe's doing.
I'm going to spend time doingthat because those are my values

(12:14):
.
So, understanding that I've madethat choice, that puts this in
a whole different context.
Right, because now it's notthat my life is so busy and
things are happening to me andI'm the victim, it's that I've
made a choice to suspend onegratifying goal for another.

(12:36):
I've chosen the goal of being,in my own definition, what I
feel like is a good dad, andyour definition might be
different, but for my definition, I'm doing the most important
thing at the expense of anotherimportant thing that is less
important in my value system.
And so I need to think aboutwhether or not that's okay which

(13:00):
, once you look at it that way, from my perspective, it's more
than okay.
It's the right choice andadjust and modify my goals
accordingly.
And even better than that planknowing that these things are
going to happen and maybe haveplans that are a little more
realistic around what my reallife is, given my values.

(13:24):
And I think that's a reallyimportant idea that just because
you commit to a thing, I'm notsaying that you should be a
quitter and I'm not saying thatyou should accept when you don't
hit your own targets.
We need to hit our targets.
In my corporate life, hittingyour targets is super important,
but it's not such a black andwhite thing.

(13:47):
There are times in our lifewhen we need to understand the
season that we're in and makeadjustments accordingly, because
when you're operating inconjunction with your values, in
harmony with your values, thatis still winning, and so we've
got to make sure that weunderstand the context of these
situations and react accordingly, and one of the things that

(14:10):
cliff encouraged me to do herewhich I thought was really good
is to re-evaluate these goals, reset and have, maybe, plans
where I can expand and contractthe targets as my time allows.
Again, this is not an excuse towatch more reality television.

(14:33):
Okay, that's not what we'retalking about.
What we're talking about is,when I make decisions that are
consistent with my value system, understand that these things
are going to expand and contractand have a plan for that, and I
think that's really actionableand it's not different than what
we do in a corporate situation.

(14:53):
I understand, when I haveproject plans, that I'm going to
have unexpected delays infinding engineering solutions.
I've spent a lot of time in mycorporate career in research and
development.
It's really hard to predict howlong it's going to take to
solve a complicated engineeringproblem.
You need to work on it untilyou're done, and so in those

(15:15):
schedules, we're perfectlycomfortable with adjusting them
as the situation develops, withadjusting them as the situation
develops, and I need to learn tobetter do that when I'm
adapting to my goals, to therealities that are happening in
my life, when I'm in this seasonwhere I've got a lot of family
responsibilities that are veryimportant to me.

(15:36):
And the third thing that Cliffand I talked about that I think
will help you is about managingproductivity cycles and the
ability to focus.
Now, this is something I'veheard for years and I understand
this intellectually, but I'venever really done the work to
understand what my productivitycycles look like and how I might

(16:00):
optimize them.
This is a very interesting idea.
Cliff recommended that Ijournal what things that I see
that are going on in myday-to-day and week-to-week
productivity my ability to getthings done, how I'm working
against my goals, how I'mworking against my goals,

(16:26):
planning for productivity burstsas they come, and observing
when I insist on having downtimelike maybe I'm just too tired
to record that podcast episodeor to work on that lead magnet
what's going on when thathappens, and so that I can start
to see how that is maybecyclical and how I can take
advantage of it and optimize it.
He actually had two tips.

(16:47):
He recommended that I use ajournaling app like Day One,
which I have used a long timeago and I'm excited to start
using again and to look attracking apps like A-Time Logger
or one of those kind of appswhich you can find in the iPhone
app store and log my time andlook and see where my time is

(17:10):
going and how I'm using it andlook for patterns and
opportunities to manage mycycles of productivity.
After all, this brand is thelate night internet marketing
brand.
It refers to the fact that Iworked on my side hustle very
late at night when I was gettingstarted After the kids were in

(17:31):
bed.
I'd work from nine o'clock tillone or two in the morning, and
I still do that from time totime, but I don't always do that
.
I'm a lot older now.
After all, I started this morethan a decade and a half ago.
I need a little more sleep thanI needed 15 years ago and it's
probably time for me to relookat what the most optimum times

(17:53):
are for me to be working in myinternet business.
Obviously, when I'm not workingon my day job.
So those are three things that Ithink could help you Again.
The first thing is make sureyou understand the values that
are underpinning the actions youtake.

(18:15):
When you take an action andmake a decision, you're doing
that in response to thisunderlying value system that you
have that describes the thingsthat you're doing, that in
response to this underlyingvalue system that you have.
That describes the things thatyou're moving towards and things
that you're trying to move awayfrom.
Make sure that you understandwhat those are.
First and second, act to changethem, to reprogram the script,

(18:37):
if you will, to change theprogramming if that's not
working for you.
And then the second thing ismake sure that you're realistic
about your goals versus life'srealities.
Things are going to happen andthat could be okay, depending on
what's going on, especially inthe context of your values.
And finally, pay attention tooptimizing your productivity

(19:01):
cycles.
Be present, get off ofautopilot, be introspective
about when you are mostproductive and how you can take
advantage of your cycles ofproductivity to better optimize
the work that you are doing.
Just three quick and easy, really powerful points from

(19:21):
Cliff.
I hope you enjoy that and ifyou like this kind of thing.

I really love working with Cliff.
He is Yoda.
I do coaching and I feelcompared to Cliff.
A lot of times I feel in theseareas of human motivation and
the science of human motivation,I feel like Luke Skywalker
compared to cliff.
He's like Yoda and he's justlike the master and it's just

(21:14):
fun to work with him because wespeak the same language and
sometimes I know what he's goingto say before he even says it.
But when you're inside the jaryou can't read the label and
with me and Cliff that's apowerful combination because he
can read my label and be Yoda atthe same time and that gives

(21:36):
him tremendous power to help meand I'm very thankful for that.
And Cliff has helped a lot ofpeople.
Some of the stories and Cliff'stold all these stories in
public, so I'm not giving awayany secrets but some of the
stories of the transformationsthat Cliff has been able to
achieve are just legend and I'vehelped some people right.

(22:01):
I've been coaching on and offfor more than three decades
really, and I enjoy it very muchand I feel very good about my
ability to help people when Icoach them.
But the stories that Cliff hasabout people that he's impacted
that have decided not to commitsuicide and things like that.
Lives that he's impacted thathave decided not to commit

(22:23):
suicide and things like that.
Lives that he's completelyturned around Businesses where
he's unlocked tenfold increasesin revenue.
It's really quite amazing andit's fun to check out.
So go on over to MindsetAnsmancom.
You know, 10 years ago I usedto joke all the time that I am

(22:45):
the founding member andpresident of the cliff Raven's
craft fan club.
I still feel that way Eventoday.
It's watching him help peopleEven me is is really inspiring.
Check him out.
