(00:22):
Leviticus 22 through 24. I'mcalling this episode, an eye for
an eye. Let's have a word ofprayer before we get started,
our Heavenly Father, we love youAnd we thank you for this time
together. I pray, Lord, that aswe read you would give us
understanding bless our timetogether I pray in Jesus name,
amen. Okay, let's begin.
(00:44):
Leviticus 22 The Lord said toMoses, tell Aaron Edison's to be
careful with the holy gift thatthe people of Israel set apart
from me so they will not sinagainst My Holy Name. I am the
Lord. Say to them, If anyone ofall your children comes near the
holy gifts that the people ofIsrael set apart for the Lord,
while he is unclean, he will becut off from my holy place. I am
(01:09):
the Lord. None of the childrenof Aaron who has a bad skin
disease or something flowingfrom his body may eat of the
holy gifts until he is clean. Ifone touches anything that is
unclean because of a dead body,or his had his seed come from
his sex part or touches anythingthat is unclean that moves on
the ground, or touches any manwho makes him unclean. For
(01:31):
whatever reason, the man whotouches any such thing will be
unclean until evening, he mustnot eat any of the holy gifts
unless he has washed his body inwater. When the sun has gone
down, he will be clean. Afterthat he may eat of the holy
gifts for their his food. Heshould not eat an animal that
dies of itself or is killed bywild animals, he will be unclean
(01:54):
if he does, I am the Lord. Thereligious leaders must obey my
law so they will not be sinfulbecause of it And die because
they sin against my law. I amthe Lord who makes them holy.
But no one who is not areligious leader may eat the
holy gift. One who is visitingthe religious leader or working
(02:14):
for him must not eat of the holygift. But a person whom the
religious leader buys to workfor him with his own money may
eat of it, And those who areborn in his house may eat of his
food. If a religious leadersdaughter is married to a man who
is not a religious leader, shemust not eat of the holy gifts.
But if a religious leadersdaughter loses her husband by
(02:36):
death or divorce, And has nochild And returns to her
father's house as when she wasyoung, she may eat for father's
food, but no stranger may eat ofit. If a man eats a holy gift by
mistake, he must add a fifth ofits worth to it And give the
Holy gift to the religiousleader. But religious leaders
must not make the holy giftsunclean that the people of
(02:58):
Israel give to the Lord. Thiswould bring sin upon them when
they eat their holy gifts. For Iam the Lord who makes them holy.
Then the Lord said to Moses, Sayto Aaron And his sons And to all
the people of Israel, when anyman of the house of Israel or of
the strangers in Israel giveshis gift for a burnt gift to the
(03:19):
Lord, to pay a promise or as afree will gift to please the
Lord. It must be a mail that isperfect from the cattle, sheep
or goats. Do not give anythingthat is not perfect for you will
not please the Lord. When a mangives a peace gift to the Lord
to keep a special promise or fora free will gift from the cattle
(03:39):
or the flock. It must be perfectto be received. It must have
nothing wrong with it. You mustnot give to the Lord or make a
gift by fire on the altar to theLord. Any animals that are blind
or broken or hurt, or have aflowing sore or a skin disease.
You may give for a free willgift a bowl or a lamb which has
(03:59):
some part too long or too short, but it will not be received if
it has to pay a promise. Do notgive to the Lord any animal with
its sex part hurt or crushed ortorn or cut. Do not give such
animals on the altar in yourland, And do not receive such
animals from a man from anotherland to give as the food of your
God for they are unclean. Theyare not perfect, they will not
(04:23):
be received from you. The Lordsaid to Moses, when a bull or
sheep or goat is born, it muststay seven days with its mother.
After that it will be receivedas a gift by fire to the Lord.
But do not kill a cow or femalesheep And her young on the same
day. When you give Thanks to theLord by giving a gift in
(04:45):
worship, give it the right wayso that you will be received. It
must be eaten on the same day.Do not leave any of it until
morning. I am the Lord. So keepmy laws And obey them. I am the
Lord. Do not sinned against myholy name. I will be honored
among the people of Israel. I amthe Lord who makes you holy. I
(05:07):
brought you out of the land ofEgypt to be your God. I am the
Lord.
Leviticus 23 Yahweh spoke toMoses saying, Speak to the
Children of Israel And tell themthe set feasts of Yahweh which
you shall proclaim to be holyconvocations even these are my
set feasts. Six days shall workbe done, but on the seventh day
(05:30):
is a sabbath of solemn rest, aholy convocation, you shall do
no kind of work. It is a Sabbathto Yawei in all your dwellings.
These are the set feasts of yourway, even holy convocations
which you shall proclaim Andthey're appointed season. In the
first month on the 14th day ofthe month, in the evening, is
(05:52):
your ways Passover. On the 15thday of the same month is the
Feast of Unleavened Bread toYahweh seven days you shall eat
unleavened bread. In the firstday you shall have a holy
convocation. You shall do noregular work, but you shall
offer an offering made by fireto Yawei seven days. In the
(06:12):
seventh day is a holyconvocation. You shall do no
regular work. Yahweh spoke toMoses saying, Speak to the
Children of Israel And tell themwhen you have come into the land
which I give to you, And shallreap its harvest, then you shall
bring the sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the
priest, And he shall waive thesheath before Yahweh to be
(06:33):
accepted for you. On the nextday after the Sabbath, the
priest shall waive it. On theDay when you wave the sheaf. You
shall offer a male lamb withoutblemish a year old for a burnt

generations in all yourdwellings. You shall count from
the next day after the Sabbathfrom the day that you brought

lambs without blemish a yearold, one young bull And two
RAMs, they shall be a burntoffering to Yahweh with their
meal offering And Their drinkofferings, even an offering made
by fire of a sweet aroma toYahweh. You shall offer one male
goat for a sin offering And tomale lambs a year old for a
(08:03):
sacrifice of peace offerings. The priest shall waive them with
the bread of the first fruitsfor a wave offering before he
got away with the two lambs. They shall be holy try for the
priest. You shall makeproclamation on the same day,
there shall be a holyconvocation to you, you shall do
no regular work. This is astatute forever in all your
(08:25):
dwellings throughout yourgenerations. When you reap the
harvest of your land, you shallnot wholly reap into the corners
of your field, neither shall yougather the gleanings of your
harvest, you shall leave themfor the poor And for the
foreigner, I am Yahweh your God.Yahweh spoke to Moses saying,
Speak to the Children of Israel, saying, in the seventh month on
(08:48):
the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest to you. A
memorial of blowing of trumpets,a holy convocation, you shall do
no regular work, And you shalloffer an offering made by fire
to Yahweh. Yahweh spoke toMoses, saying, however, on the
10th day of this seventh monthis the Day of Atonement. It
(09:09):
shall be a holy convocation toyou, And you shall afflict
yourselves, And you shall offeran offering made by fire to
Yahweh, you shall do no kind ofwork in that same day for it as
a day of atonement to makeatonement for you before Yahweh
your God. For whoever it is, Whoshall not deny himself in that
same day shall be cut off fromhis people, whoever it is, who
(09:32):
does any kind of work in thatsame day, that person I will
destroy from among his people, you shall do no kind of work. It
is a statute forever throughoutyour generations in all your
dwellings. It shall be a Sabbathof solemn rest for you, And you
shall deny yourselves in theninth day of the month at
evening from evening to evening, you shall keep your Sabbath.
(09:54):
Yahweh spoke to Moses saying,Speak to the Children of Israel
And say on the 15th day of theseventh month is the feast of
tents for seven days to Yahweh. On the first day shall be a holy
convocation you shall do noregular work. Seven days you
shall offer an offering made byfire to Yahweh. On the eighth
(10:17):
day shall be a holy convocationto you, And you shall offer an
offering made by fire to Yahweh. It is a solemn assembly, you
shall do no regular work. Theseare the appointed feasts of
Yahweh which you shall proclaimto be holy convocations to offer
an offering made by fire toYahweh, a burnt offering And a
(10:38):
meal offering a sacrifice Anddrink offerings, each on its own
day, besides the Sabbath ofYahweh, And besides your gifts,
And besides all your vows, Andbesides all your free will
offerings which you give toYahweh. So on the 15th day of
the seventh month, when you havegathered in the fruits of the
land, you shall keep the Feastof Yawei seven days on the first
(11:01):
day shall be a solemn rest, Andon the eighth day shall be a
solemn rest. You shall take onthe first day the fruit of
goodly trees, branches of palmtrees, And boughs of thick trees
And willows of the brook, Andyou shall rejoice before Yahweh
your God seven days, you shallkeep it a feast to Yawei seven
(11:21):
days in the year. It is astatute forever throughout your
generations. You shall keep itin the seventh month. You shall
dwell in booths seven days. Allwho are native born in Israel
shall dwell in booths, that yourgenerations may know that I made
the children of Israel to dwellin booths, when I brought them
out from the land of Egypt. I amYahweh your God. Moses declared
(11:46):
to the children of Israel theappointed feasts of Yahweh.
Leviticus 24, the Lord said toMoses, tell the people of Israel
to bring you pure oil frombeaten olives for the light to
keep a lamp burning all thetime. Outside the curtain of the
law in the meeting tent, Aaronwill keep it burning from
evening to morning before theLord always it will be a law
(12:09):
forever for all your people. Hewill take care of the lamps on
the pure gold lamp stand beforethe Lord all the time. Then take
fine flour And bake 12 loaves ofbread. Use two jars of flour for
each leaf. Set them side by sidein two rows six in each row. On
the pure gold table before theLord put pure sweet smelling
(12:31):
spices on each row to go withthe bread as something to be
remembered. It is a gift by fireto the Lord. Every day of rest
he will set it before the Lordall the time. It is a law
forever for the people ofIsrael. The bread is for Aaron
And his sons who will eat it ina holy place. It is the most
holy part for him out of thegifts by fire to the Lord. It is
(12:55):
his share forever. Now the sonof an Israelite woman whose
father was an Egyptian wit amongthe people of Israel, And the
Israelite woman's son at a manof Israel fought with each other
among the tents. The son of theIsraelite woman swore against
the name of the Lord. So theybrought him to Moses. His
mother's name was Shalom if thedaughter of Debray of the family
(13:17):
of Dan, And they kept him shutup until the will of the Lord
might be made known to them. Then the Lord said to Moses,
take the one who has swornagainst me away from the tents.
Let all who heard him lay theirhands on his head, then let all
the people kill him by throwingstones, say to the people of
Israel, if anyone swears againsthis God, he will suffer for his
(13:41):
own sin. The one who speaksagainst the name of the Lord
will be put to death for sureall the people will kill him
with stones, both the strangerAnd those born in the land will
be put to death when he speaksagainst the name of the Lord. If
a man takes the life of anyhuman being, he will be put to
death for sure. The one whotakes the life of an animal will
(14:03):
pay for it a life for a life. Ifa man hurts his neighbor, it
will be done to him just as heis done. Broken Bone for broken
bone, I for eye, tooth fortooth, just as he has heard a
man, so will he be hurt. So theone who kills an animal will pay
for it with an animal but theone who kills a man will be put
(14:25):
to death. You will have the samelaw for the stranger And for the
one born among you, for I am theLord your God. Then Moses spoke
to the people of Israel, Andthey took the one who swore
against God And brought him awayfrom the tents And killed him
with stones. So the people ofIsrael did as the Lord told
Moses.
(14:46):
Let's talk a little bit aboutLeviticus chapter 24. Verses 19
through 20 say if a man hurtshis neighbor it will be done to
him just as he has done brokenbone for broken bone. i for i
tooth. For tooth justice, he hasheard a man so he will be hurt.
All right, well, most peoplehave heard the phrase An eye for
(15:07):
an eye, a tooth for a tooth, right? Let's talk about that.
Some have used this as an excuseto take revenge. After all, if
somebody harms us, the naturalresponse is to want to get them
back with interest. Others havetaken an eye for an eye tooth
for tooth to mean that it is anobligation to repay injury for
(15:28):
injury. But the truth is thatGod was setting limits for
meeting out justice, thepunishment cannot be worse than
the offense. And also, thephrase was not to be taken
literally, the law of Mosesactually set a standard of
repayment in situations likethis. Exodus 21, for example,
(15:49):
verse 26, says, If a man strikesthe eye of his male or a female
servant, And destroys it, heshall let him go free for the
sake of his eye. So the lawdoesn't say, Take That man's eye
it says, To make up for it, setthe servant free. Also, keep in
mind that focus here inLeviticus is on establishing
(16:13):
community standards, what thelegal structure was to be, yes,
it was part of the legal systemto seek restitution for injuries
that were inflicted. But inMatthew five, verses 38 through
42, Jesus addressed howindividuals should react to such
circumstances. He said, You haveheard that it was said An eye
(16:36):
for an eye And a tooth for atooth, but I say to you, do not
resist an evil person. Butwhoever slaps you on your right
cheek, turn the other to him. Also, if anyone wants to sue you
And take your shirt, let himhave your coat also. Whoever
forces you to go one mile, gowith him to give to him who asks
(16:57):
of you And do not turn away fromHim who wants to borrow from
you. So what's going on here? Inthis teaching, Jesus was telling
us that when we are insulted oroffended, we should not respond
in kind. The phrase that he usedthere having to do with being
slapped on the right cheek wasunderstood by their culture, to
(17:18):
have the meaning that you arebeing deeply insulted. He wasn't
talking about an actual physicalattack. He wasn't saying that we
should not defend ourselves ifwe are being physically
attacked. He was talking aboutinsults or being slighted. Bible
commentator William Barclaywrote, Jesus is here saying that
(17:40):
the true Christian has learnedto resent no insult And to seek
retaliation for no slight. Thinkabout it. Jesus was called a
glutton. He was called ablasphemer. He was called crazy,
a drunk And even an illegitimatechild. But what did he do? Did
he strike back? No, he respondedin love. Again, these examples
(18:03):
are referring to when we areinsulted or otherwise put upon.
Jesus was not saying that evilitself should not be resisted.
He resisted evil as when Heoverturned the tables in the
temple. And when he verballyshut down the religious
hypocrites, which he called abrute of snakes, so in that
case, he was resisting evil aswell. So an eye for an eye is
(18:28):
not a requirement. It's a limit.And it's for the civil
authorities to enforce. We areto respond to slights And
insults And impositions byshowing love, not by seeking
revenge or trying to get even.So that begs the question, what
is it to show love? What islove? well, as it just so
(18:49):
happens, the Bible addressesthat as well as you might
expect. First Corinthians 13,four through eight sums it up
nicely. Love is patient Andkind. Love is not jealous or
boastful or proud or rude. Itdoes not demand its own way. It
is not irritable, And it keepsno record of being wronged. It
(19:11):
does not rejoice aboutinjustice, but rejoices whenever
the Truth Wins Out. Love nevergives up. Love never loses faith
is always helpful And enduresthrough every circumstance. What
