Steve Webb (00:00):
What a great way to
start each day.
This is the Lifespring! One YearBible coming to you from
Riverside, California Andpodcasting since 2004. I'm your
OG Godcaster. Steve Webb. Thisis Psalms. Wednesday, we will
(00:21):
read chapters 90 through 92. AndI'm calling this episode when
you are afraid. Before we getstarted, let's pray. Our
heavenly Father, how we love youAnd how we love the songs. I
thank You, Lord again for givingthem to us. I pray that as we
read today, you would bless usAnd that you would give us
something that we can hang on toin our daily lives. I pray this
(00:43):
in Jesus name. Amen. All right, let's begin shall we?
The title of Psalm 90 is aprayer of Moses, the man of God.
Now scholars disagree on whetherthis is the Moses but there's
good reason to believe that itis. This is the only song of
Moses in the Psalms, but thereis one in Exodus 15 And one in
(01:06):
Deuteronomy 32. According tocommentator James Montgomery
Boice, the historical setting isprobably best understood by the
incidents recorded in numbers 20Number one, the death of Miriam
Moses sister, number two, thesin of Moses in striking the
rock in the wilderness whichkept him from entering the
promised land. And number three, the death of Aaron, Moses,
(01:28):
brother.
Psalms chapter 90. Lord, throughall the generations, you have
been our home, Before themountains were born, before you
gave birth to the earth And theworld from beginning to end, you
are God. You turn people back todust saying return to dust you
mortals for you. 1000 years oras a passing day, as brief as a
(01:53):
few night hours. You sweeppeople away like dreams that
disappear. They're like grassthat springs up in the morning.
In the morning it blooms Andflourishes, but by evening it is
dry And weathered. We witherbeneath your anger. We are
overwhelmed by your fury. Youspread out our sins before you
are a secret sins, And you seethem all. We live our lives
(02:18):
beneath your wrath, ending ouryears with a grown 70 years are
given to us. Some even live toAD. But even the best years are
filled with pain And trouble.Soon they disappear And we fly
away. Who can comprehend thepower of your anger? Your wrath
is as awesome as the fear youdeserve. Teach us to realize the
(02:41):
brevity of life so that we maygrow in wisdom. Oh Lord, come
back to us. How long will youdelay? Take pity on your
servants. satisfy us eachmorning with your unfailing
love. So we may sing for joy tothe end of our lives. Give us
gladness in proportion to ourformer misery. Replace the evil
(03:03):
years with good. Let us Yourservants see you work again. Let
our children see your glory. Andmay the Lord our God, show us
his approval And make ourefforts successful. Yes, make
our efforts successful.
We don't know who wrote Psalm 91Because it doesn't have a title.
(03:24):
Commentator Derek Kidner wrote, some of its language of
strongholds And shields remindsus of David to whom the
Septuagint describes it. Otherphrases echo the song of Moses
in Deuteronomy 32, as did Psalm90, but it is in fact anonymous,
in timeless, perhaps all themore accessible for that. And
(03:45):
Charles Spurgeon particularlyliked this song he wrote, in the
whole collection, there is not amore cheering song, its tone is
elevated And sustainedthroughout. Faith is at its best
in speaks nobly. And Spurgeonquote of the 17th century French
scholar Simeon Murad de muise, Ihope I'm saying that right as
(04:07):
saying, quote, It is one of themost excellent works of this
kind which has ever appeared. Itis impossible to imagine
anything more solid, morebeautiful, more profound, or
more ornamented.
Psalms chapter 91. Those wholive in the shelter of the Most
High will find rest in theshadow of the Almighty. This I
(04:30):
declare about the Lord. He aloneis my refuge, my place of
safety. He is my God And I trusthim, for he will rescue you from
every trap And protect you fromdeadly disease. He will cover
you with his feathers, he willshelter you with his wings. His
faithful promises are your armorAnd protection. Do not be afraid
(04:52):
of the terrors of the night, northe arrow that flies in the day.
Do not dread the disease thatstalks in darkness nor the
desert After that strikes atmidday, though 1000 fall at your
side, though 10,000 are dyingaround you, those evils will not
touch you. Just open your eyesAnd see how the wicked are
punished. If you make the Lordyour refuge if you make the Most
(05:16):
High your shelter, No evil willconquer you know plague will
come near your home, for he willorder His angels to protect you
wherever you go. They will holdyou up with their hands so you
won't even hurt your foot on astone. You will trample upon
lions And cobras you will crushfierce lions And serpents under
(05:36):
your feet. The Lord says, I willrescue those who love me. I will
protect those who trust in MyName. When they call on me I
will answer I will be with themin trouble. I will rescue And
honor them. I will reward themwith a long life And give them
my salvation.
The title of Psalm 92 is a psalma song for the Sabbath day.
(06:01):
Spurgeon wrote of this one, theJews have for a long while use
this psalm in the synagogueworship on their Sabbath, And
very suitable it is for theSabbath day, not so much in
appearance for there is littleor no illusion to any sabbatic
rest in it. But because on thatday above all others our
thoughts should be lifted upfrom all earthly things to God
(06:22):
Himself.
Psalms chapter 92. It is good togive Thanks to the Lord to sing
praises to the Most High. It isgood to proclaim Your unfailing
love in the morning, Yourfaithfulness in the evening,
accompanied by a 10, stringedinstrument, a harp And the
melody of a liar. You thrill meLord with all you have done for
(06:45):
me, I sing for joy because ofwhat you have done. Oh, Lord,
what great works you do, And howdeep are your thoughts? Only a
simpleton would not know Andonly a fool would not understand
this. Though the wicked sproutlike weeds And evildoers
flourish, they will be destroyedforever. But you will Lord will
(07:06):
be exalted forever. Your enemy'sLord will surely perish. All
evildoers will be scattered. Butyou have made me as strong as a
wild ox. You have anointed mewith the finest oil. My eyes
have seen the downfall of myenemies. My ears have heard the
defeat of my wicked opponents. But the godly will flourish like
(07:28):
palm trees And grow strong likethe cedars of Lebanon, for they
are transplanted to the Lord'sown house. They flourish in the
courts of our God. Even in oldage, they will still produce
fruit, they will remain vital ingreen, they will declare the
Lord is just he is my rock, there is no evil in him.
(07:51):
I have some short thoughts oneach of our three songs today
for Psalm 90. It was written byMoses most likely, though it's
only 17 verses it sums up hisentire experience with God. And
Psalm 91 is a great one to readwhen you're feeling afraid.
Verse two says in Part II aloneis my refuge, my place of
(08:11):
safety. Beloved, let's face it,all of us feel afraid from time
to time. Remember Psalm 91 Thenext time you're fearful. And
Psalm 92 is a song to be sung onthe Sabbath day, but it is
actually good to sing every day. It's hard to read this one
without feeling a sense of joyAnd worship. It begins. It is
(08:33):
good to give Thanks to the Lordto sing praises to the Most
High. Yes, it is good. I'vediscovered that when I sing
praises to the Most High, Ican't help but be overwhelmed by
the feeling that God is pleasedby my praises. What a great way
to start each day. I highlyrecommend it. So what are your
(08:55):
thoughts? What did you get outof today? Let me know call the

(09:24):
This is number nine in ourseries on the essentials of the
faith And today we're going tocontinue talking about what we
believe about Jesus. Today we'lltalk about the fact that Jesus
lived a sinless life Andvoluntarily atone for the sins
of men by dying on the cross astheir substitute, thus
satisfying divine justice Andaccomplishing salvation for all
(09:45):
who trust in Him alone. There'sa lot there. So today we're just
going to cover the part thatsays Jesus lived a sinless life.
It seems simple, but there's alot there. So here we go. How
was it possible for Jesus tolive a sinless life if he was
fully human, we know that he wasfully God. But he was also fully
human. Right? We've talked aboutthat. well, if he was fully
(10:07):
human, we know that humans havea sin nature. So why didn't he
sin? well, the fact is thatJesus did not have a sin nature
because of who his parents were, who are his parents, Mary was
his mother And she becamepregnant miraculously by the
Holy Spirit. Now let's step backa bit all the way back to the
(10:28):
Garden of Eden when God toldAdam that he was not to eat of
the tree. Listen here to Genesis216 And 17. And the LORD God
commanded the man saying, youmay surely eat of every tree of
the garden, but of the tree ofthe knowledge of good And evil
you shall not eat for in the daythat you eat of it, you shall
surely die. Now notice that Godwas speaking only to Adam, did
(10:53):
you hear that? It said, in theLORD God commanded the man. All
right, well, where was Eve?well, Eve had not yet arrived on
the scene. It wasn't until verse18, that God said that He would
make a helper for Adam. And nowgoing to Genesis three, the
serpent said to Eve, did Godactually say you shall not eat
(11:15):
of any tree in the garden? Okay, well, let's stop there. Is that
what God said? No, God said, youcan eat of any tree in the
garden except for the one. Soalready the serpent is twisting
God's word. Remember, Eve wasn'teven there when God gave the
command. But her answer to theserpent was correct. She said,
We made of the fruit of thetrees of the garden, but God
(11:36):
said, you shall not eat of thefruit of the tree that is in the
midst of the garden, neithershall you touch it, lest you
die. So she got that part, right? But the serpent said in
response to that, You will notsurely die, For God knows that
when you eat of it, your eyeswill be opened And you will be
like God, knowing good And evil.Again, this is only half of a
(12:00):
truth, right? Yes, after eatingthe fruit, they did no good And
evil. So he got that part, right. But at that point, they
did begin to die. It took manyyears for their physical body to
die, but at that point, theyspiritually died. They had
separation from God. So why isthis important? Now? Because
(12:23):
when God brought judgment onthem, God held Adam responsible?
Yes, Eve sinned, but she wasdeceived by the serpent. Adam,
on the other hand, was notdeceived. He deliberately chose
to listen to Eve instead oflistening to God's direct
command. So God held Adamaccountable for sin, And for the
(12:44):
fall of mankind. Now, are youwith me, okay. After they
sinned, God told the serpent, Iwill put enmity between you And
the woman, And between youroffspring And her offspring, he
shall bruise your head, And youshall bruise his heel. So in
other words, God told Satan thata descendant of Eve would bruise
(13:05):
his head, but the serpent wouldonly bruise the heel of Eve's
descendant, not Adamsdescendant, Eve's to send it.
Now, we've already establishedthat Jesus did not have a human
father. He was the Offspring ofa woman or an offspring of Eve,
right, but not of a man. He wastherefore not made in the image
(13:25):
And likeness of Adam, Jesus forthe image And likeness of God.
And this is why he did not havea sin nature And why he was able
to live a sinless life. He wastempted by Satan in the desert,
but he didn't sin. Now, becausehe didn't sin, he was qualified
to be the sinless sacrifice forour sins. And we'll talk about
(13:45):
that next Wednesday, Lordwilling, I welcome your comments
And your questions atsteve@lifespringmedia.com dot
com. And speaking of comments acouple of weeks ago, I mentioned
that I'm seeing the essentialsbeing taught in various places
around the country. And I askedyou if you were seeing it to,
well, Steve do sent this And hesaid, I'm not sure this is a
direct parallel, but I thinkit's similar. I found out about
(14:08):
a new apologetics course aboutto be taught at my church, very
appealing to my analytical mindAnd also being new in Christ.
well, thank you, Steve. I thinkthat's awesome. And I don't
think you can teach apologeticswithout including the essential
so even though it isn't exactlythe same. It's a great parallel.
I hope you really enjoy thatclass, I'm sure you will.
