(00:23):
Proverbs 14 And 15. Before weget started, let's have a word
of prayer. Our heavenly Father, how we thank you for the book of
Proverbs And the wisdom that iscontained in it. I pray God that
you would help us to apply someof this wisdom to our lives.
pray this in Jesus name. Amen. All right, let's begin.
(00:44):
Proverbs chapter 14. Every wisewoman builds her house, but a
foolish one tears it down withher own hands. Whoever lives
with integrity fears the Lord, but the one who is devious in
his ways despises him. The proudspeech of a fool brings a rod of
discipline, but the lips of thewise protect them. Where there
(01:05):
are no oxen the feeding troughis empty, but an abundant
harvest comes through thestrength of an ox. And honest
witness does not deceive but adishonest witness otters lives.
A mocker seeks wisdom Anddoesn't find it. But knowledge
comes easily to the perceptive.Stay away from a foolish man,
(01:26):
you will gain no knowledge fromhis speech. The sensible man's
wisdom is to consider his waybut the stupidity of fools to
seize them. Fools market makingrestitution, but there is
goodwill among the upright. Theheart knows its own bitterness,
And no outsider shares in itsjoy. The house of the wicked
(01:49):
will be destroyed, but the tentof the upright will stand. There
is a way that seems right to aman, but its end is the way to
death. Even in laughter a heartmay be sad, And joy may end in
grief. The disloyal one will getwhat his conduct deserves, And a
good man what his deeds deserve. The inexperienced one believes
(02:13):
anything, but the sensible onewatches his steps. A wise man is
cautious And turns away fromevil. But a fool is easily
angered And his careless. Aquick tempered man acts
foolishly, And a man who schemesis hated. The inexperienced
inherit foolishness, but thesensible are crowned with
(02:34):
knowledge, the evil bow beforethose who are good, the wicked
at the gates of the righteous.Apoor man is hated even by his
neighbor, but there are many wholoved the rich, the one who
despises his neighbor sins, butwhoever shows kindness to the
poor will be Happy. Don't thosewho plan evil go astray? But
(02:57):
those who plan good find loyaltyAnd faithfulness. There is
profit in all hard work, butendless talk leads only to
poverty. The crown of the wiseis their wealth, but the
foolishness of fools producesfoolishness. The truthful
witness rescues lives but onewho utters lies is deceitful. In
(03:20):
the fear of the Lord one hasstrong confidence And his
children have a refuge. The fearof the Lord is a fountain of
life, turning people away fromthe snares of death. A large
population is a king's splendor,but a shortage of people is a
rulers devastation. A patientperson shows great
(03:40):
understanding, but a quicktempered one promotes
foolishness. A tranquil heart islife to the body, but jealousy
is rottenness to the bones. Theone who oppresses the poor
person insults his maker, butone who is kind to the needy
honors him. The wicked one isthrown down by his own sin, but
(04:01):
the righteous one has a refugein his death. Wisdom resides in
the heart of the discerning sheis known even among fools.
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any
people. A king favors a wiseservant, but his anger falls on
a disgraceful one.
(04:22):
Proverbs chapter 15. A gentleanswer turns away anger, but a
harsh word stirs up wrath. Thetongue of the wise makes
knowledge attractive, but themouth of fools blurts out
foolishness. The eyes of theLord are everywhere observing
the wicked And the good. Thetongue that heals is a tree of
(04:43):
life, but a devious tonguebreaks the spirit. A fool
despises his father'sdiscipline, but a person who
accepts correction is sensible. The House of the righteous has
great wealth, but troubleaccompanies the income of the
wicked. The lips of the wisebroadcast knowledge but not so
(05:03):
the heart of fools. Thesacrifice of the wicked is
detestable to the Lord, but theprayer of the upright is his
delight. The Lord detests theway of the wicked, but he loves
the one who pursuesrighteousness. Discipline is
harsh for the one who leaves thepath, the one who hates
correction will die. She olanAbaddon ly opened before the
(05:29):
Lord, how much more humanhearts. a mocker doesn't love
one who corrects him, he willnot consult the wise. A joyful
heart makes a face cheerful, buta sad heart produces a broken
spirit. A discerning mind seeksknowledge, but the mouth of
fools feeds on foolishness. Allthe days of the oppressed are
(05:52):
miserable. But a cheerful hearthas a continual feast. Better a
little with the fear of the LORDthan great treasure with
turmoil. Better a meal ofvegetables where there is love
than a fattened docks withhatred. A hot tempered man stirs
up conflict, but a man slow toanger calms strife. A slackers
(06:15):
way is like a thorny hedge ofthe path of the upright is a
highway. A wise son brings joyto his father, but a foolish man
despises his mother. Foolishnessbrings joy to one without sense
but a man with understandingwalks a straight path. plans
fail when there is no counsel, but with many advisors they
(06:38):
succeed. A man takes joy ingiving an answer And a timely
word how good that is. for thediscerning the path of life
leads upward so that he mayavoid going down to Sheol. The
Lord destroys the house of theproud, but he protects the
widows territory. The Lorddetests the plans of an evil
(07:01):
man, but Pleasant words arepure. The one who profits
dishonestly troubles hishousehold, but the one who hates
bribes will live. The mind ofthe righteous person thinks
before answering, but the mouthof the wicked blurts out evil
things. The Lord is far from thewicked, but he hears the prayer
(07:23):
of the righteous, Bright Eyescheer the heart. Good news
strengthens the bones. One wholistens to life giving rebukes
will be at home among the wise.Anyone who ignores discipline
despises himself, but whoeverlistens to correction acquires
good sense. The fear of the Lordis what wisdom teaches And
(07:46):
humility comes before honor.
Today, I'm just going to focuson one verse, Proverbs 1426,
which says, in the fear of theLord one has strong confidence
And his children have a refuge. In doing background study on
these chapters that we readtoday that are so full of
(08:08):
wisdom. I came upon some notesby Joseph Parker in the people's
Bible on just this verse. Hereare some excerpts of his
comments. In no book probably isthe fear of the Lord so
elaborately described as to itsnature at its application as the
book of Proverbs. Throughout thewhole of the Bible, the fear of
(08:30):
the Lord is declared to be thebeginning of wisdom. It's not a
servile fear. The worshiper hereis not a croucher waiting in
abject position in order to benoticed by a tyrannical
desperate fear means reverence, veneration, or a sense of the
Grandeur And Majesty of theLord. Not only is that term
(08:52):
stands for infinity, brillianceAnd attributes of an
intellectual kind, but as itstands for holiness, truth,
purity, justice, And everyexpression that indicates moral
supremacy. He who fears the Lordis strong in the confidence of
ultimate justice. He isconfident also in the final
(09:13):
exposition of Providence, beingassured that the way of God to
man will be so revealed at last, that it will be seen to have
been the right way, the onlytrue way, not withstanding the
varieties of the road, the steephills, the bleak deserts, the
stony paths, the cold riversthat had to be crossed in The
(09:35):
Dark Knight, the afflictionsthat had to be endured when the
heart in flesh had failed, Andstrength had been exhausted. At
the last it will be seen thatGod has not given one stroke too
much. Taken away one treasuretoo many or dug one grave too
deep. The righteous will be thefirst to confess that God has
(09:58):
done all things wisely, well,And lovingly. A beautiful
expression is His children inthis verse here, in the very
midst of the proverbs, we findthe sublime doctrine of the
Fatherhood of God. Here too, wefind that God's children need a
place of refuge. They have oftento flee from the storm, from the
(10:20):
wrath of man, And from anapparently angry nature for
every law seems to fight againstthem. Bless it be God, when all
outward things are marked by anexcitement of an apparently
uncontrollable kind. As heavingAnd tossing is if shaken by an
earthquake, the children of Godcan go not to law, but to the
(10:42):
lawmaker himself, yay, to thevery heart of God, And there can
rest in hope And confidence. Andwhile the storm house without
around the rock of thesanctuary, that holy place can
be filled with sacred Andtriumphant song. Have we really
endeavored to find a refuge inGod? Beloved, there are many
(11:04):
places where the fear of theLord is spoken of. Remember
