I'm calling this episode “Let's Talk About Money - Is Tithing A Command or a Choice for Christians?” Design: Scott Snider | Photo: Claudio Testa on Unsplash Comments on Leviticus 27 Host Steve Webb emphasizes the importance of talking about subjects on the Lifespring! One Year Bible that may make people uncomfortable, particularly money. In this episode, he examines the concept of tithing, which is the offering of 10%, and notes that it is a commandment given in Leviticus. While the New Testament does not give a requirement to tithe, it does mention the tithe with favor, such as Hebrews 7:4-10, when Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek. Additionally, giving is commanded in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2, where Paul suggests that it should be planned for and done regularly. Steve shares his personal experience of tithing. He grew up in a non-believing home and admits to being a stingy giver. While he regularly gave some money, he never gave a tithe. However, he rationalized that Christians were not obligated to tithe under the New Covenant. It was not until he was in his 40s and his wife, who grew up in a faithful church family, suggested that they tithe, that, after prayer, he changed his mind. Steve concludes by saying that each person must decide how much to give in their heart, and they should not give reluctantly or because of pressure. He quotes 2 Corinthians 9:7, which says that God loves a person who gives cheerfully, and that God will generously provide all you need. Support This a value for value podcast. If we accept the Bible is true, then we need to
accept these verses is true.
This is the Lifespring! One YearBible coming to you from
Riverside, California Andpodcasting since 2004. I'm your

(00:20):
OG Godcaster. Steve, when todayis the law Monday And we'll read
Leviticus 25 through 27, whichwill complete the book. Let's
pray before we get started. OurHeavenly Father, we thank You
for Your Word. And we thank You,Lord, for revealing yourself to
us through the Bible. I prayLord today that you would teach
us open our hearts And open ourminds. I pray this in Jesus

(00:43):
name, amen. Okay, let's getgoing.
Leviticus chapter 25. When Moseswas on Mount Sinai, the Lord
told him to say to the communityof Israel, after you enter the
land that I'm giving you, itmust be allowed to rest one year
out of every seven, you mayraise grain And grapes for six

(01:05):
years. But the seventh year youmust let your fields in
vineyards rest in honor of me,your Lord. This is to be a time
of complete rest for your fieldsAnd vineyards. So don't harvest
anything they produce. However, you would your slaves And your
hired workers, as well as anydomestic or wild animals may eat
whatever grows on its own, onceevery 49 years on the 10th day

(01:29):
of the seventh month, which isalso the great day of
forgiveness. trumpets are to beblown everywhere in the land.
This 50th year is sacred. It isa time of freedom And of
celebration, when everyone willreceive back their original
property, And slaves will returnhome to their families. This is

(01:49):
a year of complete celebration. So don't plant any seed, or
harvest what your fields orvineyards produce. In this time
of sacred celebration, you mayeat only what grows on its own.
During this year, all propertymust go back to its original
owner. So when you buy or sellfarmland, the price is to be
determined by the number ofcrops it can produce before the

(02:11):
next year of celebration. Don'ttry to cheat. If it is a long
time before the next year ofcelebration, the price will be
higher. Because what is reallybeing sold are the crops that
the land can produce. I am theLord your God, so obey me And
don't cheat anyone. If you obeymy laws And teachings, you will

(02:31):
live safely in the land Andenjoy its abundant crops. Don't
ever worry about what you willeat during the seventh year when
you are forbidden to plant orharvest. I will see to it that
you harvest enough in the sixthyear to last for three years. In
the eighth year, you will liveon what you harvested in the
sixth year. But in the ninthyear, you will eat what you

(02:52):
plant And harvest in the eighthyear. No land may be permanently
bought or sold. It all belongsto me it is it your land And you
only live there for a littlewhile. When property is being
sold, the original owner must begiven the first chance to buy
it. If any of you Israelitesbecome so poor that you're
forced to sell your property, your closest relative must buy

(03:16):
it back if that relative has themoney. Later, if you can afford
to buy it, you must pay enoughto make up for what the present
owner will lose on it before thenext year of celebration when
the property would become yoursagain. But if you don't have the
money to pay the present owner afair price, you will have to
wait until the year ofcelebration when the property

(03:37):
will once again become yours. Ifyou sell a house in a walled
city, you have only one year inwhich to buy it back. If you
don't buy it back before thatyear is up, it becomes the
permanent property of the onewho bought it And it will not be
returned to you in the year ofcelebration. But a house out in
a village may be bought back atany time just like a field And

(03:59):
it must be returned to itsoriginal owner in the year of
celebration. If any Levites ownhouses inside a walled city,
they will always have the rightto buy them back. And any houses
that they do not by back will bereturned to them in the year of
celebration because these homesare their permanent property
among the people of Israel. Nopasture land owned by the Levi

(04:21):
tribe can ever be sold. It istheir permanent possession. If
any of your people become poorAnd unable to support
themselves, you must help themjust as you're supposed to help
foreigners who live among you.Don't take advantage of them by
charging any kind of interest orselling them food for profit.
Instead, honor me by lettingthem stay where they now live.

(04:44):
Remember, I am the Lord yourGod. I rescued you from Egypt
And gave you the land of Canaanso that I would be your God.
Suppose some of your peoplebecome so poor that they have to
sell themselves And become yourslaves. Then you must treat them
as servants rather than hisslaves in the year of
celebration, they are to be setfree, so they And their children

(05:05):
may return home to theirfamilies And property. I brought
them out of Egypt to be myservants not to be sold as
slaves. So obey me. And don't becruel to the poor. If you want
slaves, buy them from othernations, or from the foreigners
who live in your own country Andmake them your property. You can
own them And even leave them toyour children when you die. But

(05:27):
do not make slaves of your ownpeople or be cruel to them. Even
if some of you Israelites becomeso much in debt that you must
sell yourselves to foreigners inyour country, you still have the
right to be set free by arelative such as a brother or
uncle or cousin or some otherfamily member. In fact, if you
ever get enough money, you maybuy your own freedom. By paying

(05:49):
your owner for the number ofyears you would still be a slave
before the next year ofcelebration. The longer the time
until then, the more you'll haveto pay. And even while you're
the slaves of foreigners in yourown country, your people must
make sure that you are notmistreated. If you cannot gain
your freedom in any of theseways. Both you And your children

(06:09):
will still be set free in theyear of celebration, people of
Israel, I am the Lord your God,And I brought you out of Egypt
to be my own servants.
Leviticus 26. Do not make idolsor set up an image or a sacred
stone for yourselves, And do notplace a carved stone in your
land to bow down before it. I amthe Lord your God. Observe my

(06:33):
Sabbath's And have reverence formy sanctuary. I am the Lord. If
you follow my decrees And arecareful to obey my commands, I
will send you rain in its seasonAnd the ground will yield its
crops And the trees their fruit.Your threshing will continue
until grape harvest And thegrape harvest will continue
until planting And you will eatall the food you want in live in

(06:57):
safety in your land. I willgrant peace in the land And you
will lie down And no one willmake you afraid. I will remove
wild beasts from the land Andthe sword will not pass through
your country. You will pursueyour enemies And they will fall
by the sword before you. Five ofyou will chase 100 And 100 of

(07:17):
you will chase 10,000 And yourenemies will fall by the sword
before you I will look on youwith favor And make you fruitful
And increase your numbers. And Iwill keep my covenant with you.
You will still be eating lastyear's harvest when you will
have to move it out to make roomfor the new. I will put my
dwelling place among you And Iwill not abhor you. I will walk

(07:41):
among you And be your God Andyou will be my people. I am the
Lord your God who brought youout of Egypt so that you would
no longer be slaves to theEgyptians. I broke the bars of
your yoke And enabled you towalk with heads held high. But
if you will not listen to me Andcarry out all these commands.

(08:01):
And if you reject my decrees Andabhor my laws And failed to
carry out all my commands Andsoul violate my covenant, then I
will do this to you. I willbring on you sudden terror,
wasting diseases And fever thatwill destroy your site And sap
your strength. You will plantseed in vain because your
enemies will eat it. I will setmy face against you so that you

(08:25):
will be defeated by yourenemies. Those who hate you will
rule over you And you will fleeeven when no one is pursuing
you. If after all this you willnot listen to me. I will punish
you for your sins seven timesover. I will break down your
stubborn pride And make the skyabove you like iron And the

(08:45):
ground beneath you like stone.Your strength will be spent in
vain because your soil will notyield its crops, nor will the
trees of your land yield theirfruit. If you remain hostile
toward me And refuse to listento me, I will multiply your
afflictions seven times over asyour sins deserve. I will send

(09:06):
wild animals against you Andthey will rob you of your
children, destroy your cattleAnd make you so few And number
that your roads will bedeserted. If in spite of these
things, you do not accept Mycorrection, but continue to be
hostile towards me. I myselfwill be hostile toward you And
will afflict you for your sinsseven times over And I will

(09:31):
bring the sword on you to avengethe breaking of the covenant.
When you withdraw into yourcities, I will send a plague
among you And you will be giveninto enemy hands. When I cut off
your supply of bread 10 womenwill be able to bake your bread
in one oven And they will doleout the bread by weight you will
eat but you will not besatisfied. If in spite of this

(09:54):
you still do not listen to mebut continue to be hostile
toward me. Then in my anger Iwill be hostile toward you, And
I myself will punish you foryour sins seven times over. You
will eat the flesh of your sonsin the flesh of your daughters.
I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars,

(10:15):
And pile your dead bodies on thelifeless forms of your idols,
And I will abhor you. I willturn your cities into ruins And
lay waste your sanctuaries And Iwill take no delight in the
pleasing aroma of yourofferings. I myself will lay
waste to the land so that yourenemies who live there will be
appalled. I will scatter youamong the nations And we'll draw

(10:38):
out my sword And pursue you.Your land will be laid waste And
your cities will lie in ruins. Then the land will enjoy it
Sabbath yours all the time thatit lies desolate, And you are in
the country of your enemies, then the land will rest And
enjoy it Sabbath's all the timethat it lies desolate, the land

(10:58):
will have the rest it did nothave during the Sabbath you
lived in it. As for those of youwho are left, I will make their
hearts so fearful in the landsof their enemies, that the sound
of a windblown leaf will putthem to flight. They will run as
though fleeing from the sword,And they will fall even though
no one is pursuing them. Theywill stumble over one another as

(11:20):
though fleeing from the swordeven though no one is pursuing
them. So you will not be able tostand before Your enemies, you
will perish among the nationsthe land of your enemies will
devour you. Those of you who areleft will waste away in the land
of their enemies because oftheir sins. Also, because of
their ancestors sins they willwaste away. But if they will

(11:42):
confess their sins And the sinsof their ancestors, their
unfaithfulness And theirhostility toward me, which made
me hostile towards them so thatI sent them into the land of
their enemies. Then when theiruncircumcised hearts are
humbled, And they pay for theirsin, I will remember my covenant
with Jacob, And my covenant withIsaac, And my covenant with

(12:04):
Abraham. And I will remember theland for the land will be
deserted by them that will enjoyits Sabbath while it lies
desolate without them. They willpay for their sins because they
rejected my laws And abhorred mydecrees. Yet in spite of this,
when they are in the land oftheir enemies, I will not reject
them or abort them so as todestroy them completely breaking

(12:28):
my covenant with them. I am theLORD their God, but for their
sake, I will remember thecovenant with our ancestors whom
I brought out of Egypt in thesight of the nations to be their
God, I am the Lord. These arethe decrees the laws And the
regulations that the Lordestablished in Mount Sinai

(12:48):
between himself And theIsraelites through Moses.
Leviticus chapter 27. The Lordsaid to Moses, speak to the
Israelites And say to them, whena person makes a solemn promise
to the Lord involving the valueof the person, if it is the
value for a male between 20 And60 years old, his value is 50

(13:09):
Silver shekels according to thesanctuary shekel, if the person
is a female, her value is 30shekels. If the age of the
person is between five And 20years, the value for a male is
20 shekels for a female 10shekels. If the age of the
person is between one month Andfive years, the value for a male
is five silver shekels for afemale three silver shekels. If

(13:34):
the age of the person is 60years or more, the value is 15
shekels if the person is male,10 shekels for a female. But if
financial difficulty preventsthe promise maker from giving
the full value, they must setthe person before the priest,
the priest will assign theperson a value according to what
the promise maker can afford. Ifa solemn promise involves

(13:55):
livestock that can be offered tothe Lord, any such animal given
to the Lord will be consideredholy. The promise maker cannot
replace or substitute for iteither good for bad or bad for
good. But if one shouldsubstitute one animal for
another, both it And thesubstitute will be holy. If the
solemn promise involves any kindof unclean animal that cannot be

(14:16):
offered to the Lord, the promisemaker must set the animal before
the priest, the priest willassign it a value whether high
to low, its value will be whatthe priest says. If the promise
maker wishes to buy it back, they must add 1/5 to its value.
When someone dedicates theirhouse to the Lord is holy, their
priests will assign a value toit, whether high or low, the

(14:39):
value is fixed whatever valuethe priest assigns to it. If the
one who dedicates the housewishes to buy it back, they must
add 1/5 to its valued price, Andit will be there as again. If a
person dedicates part of theland from their family property
to the Lord, the value will beset according to the seed needed
to Planet 50 Silver shekels perHomer of barley seed. If the

(15:03):
person dedicates the piece ofland during the Jubilee Year,
its value will stay fixed. Butif the person dedicates the
piece after the Jubilee Year, the priest will calculate the
price according to the yearsthat are left until the next
Jubilee Year, And the value willbe reduced. If the one who
dedicates the land wishes to buyit back, they must add 1/5 to

(15:25):
its valued price And it will bethere as again. But if they do
not buy it back, or if it wassold to someone else, it is no
longer able to be bought back. When the piece of land is
released in the Jubilee year, itwill be holy to the Lord like a
piece of devoted land, it willbe the priests property. If the
person dedicates land theypurchased to the Lord land that

(15:46):
is not part of their familyproperty, the priest will
calculate the amount of itsvalue until the Jubilee Year,
the person must pay the value onthat day is a holy donation to
the Lord. In the Jubilee Year, the piece of land will return to
the seller to the one who is theoriginal owner of the family
property. Every value will beaccording to the sanctuary

(16:07):
shekel, the shackle will be 20Garis. But note that a person
cannot dedicate any oldestoffspring from livestock which
already belongs to the Lordbecause it is the oldest,
whether ox or sheep, it belongsto the Lord. If it is an unclean
animal, it may be bought back atits value plus 20%. If it is not

(16:27):
bought back, it will be sold atits set value. Also note that
everything someone devotes tothe Lord from their possessions
whether humans, animals orpieces of land from their family
property, cannot be sold orbought back. Every devoted thing
is most holy to the Lord. Nohuman beings that have been
devoted can be bought back, theymust be executed. All 10th part

(16:51):
gifts from the land whether ofseed from the ground or fruit
from the trees belong to theLord, they are holy to the Lord.
If someone wishes to buy backpart of their 10th part gift,
they must add 1/5 to it all 10thpart gifts from a herd or flock,
every 10th animal that passesunder the shepherd staff will be
holy to the Lord. The onebringing the 10th part gift must

(17:14):
not pick out the good from thebad And cannot substitute any
animal. But if one shouldsubstitute an animal, both it
And the substitute will be holyAnd cannot be bought back. These
are the commands that the Lordgave Moses on Mount Sinai for
the Israelites.
Today we're going to talk aboutLeviticus 27. If you've been

(17:35):
listening very long to the show, you've probably noticed that I'm
willing to talk about subjectsthat might make some people
uncomfortable subjects thatothers might prefer to avoid.
well, my attitude is that thoseare the subjects that need to be
talked about. God put them inhis word because he considers
them important. So let's talkabout money. Verses 30 through

(17:57):
33 of chapter 27 is abouttithes. The translation we use
for chapter 27 today use theterm 10th part gifts. And verse
34. The closing verse ofLeviticus says, These are the
commands that the Lord gaveMoses on Mount Sinai for the
Israelites. So giving tithes wasa command. It wasn't optional.

(18:19):
The question is, are we asbelievers in Jesus obligated to
tithe? So let's do a littledigging. First, what is a tithe?
A tithe is an offering of 10%.And it did not originate with
the Mosaic law. There arereferences to tides being given
all the way back in Genesis 14And Genesis 28 before Moses was

(18:41):
ever born. The New Testamentdoes not give a requirement to
tithe but it does mention thetithe with favor. One example is
Hebrews seven four through 10When Abraham gave a tithe to
Melchizedek giving, however iscommanded in First Corinthians
16 wanted to Paul even said thatnot only should giving be done,

(19:02):
but that it should be plannedfor And done regularly. He said,
Now regarding your questionabout the money being collected
for God's people in Jerusalem, you should follow the same
procedure I gave to the churchesin Galatia. On the first day of
each week, you should each putaside a portion of the money
you've earned. Don't wait untilI get there And then try to

(19:24):
collect it all at once. And ifthat wasn't enough, in Second
Corinthians eight eight Paulsays that giving is a test of
our love for God And those whodo his work. And in Second
Corinthians nine six Paulcompares giving to a farmer, the
farmer who plants sparingly willreap sparingly, the one who
plants generously will reapgenerously. And then he goes on

(19:49):
in the very next verse And saysthat each person must decide in
his or her own heart, how muchto give, And don't give
reluctantly or because ofpressure. Why Paul? All said,
For God loves a person who givescheerfully And he says God will
generously provide all you need, then you will always have
everything you need And plentyleftover to share with others.

(20:11):
And in First Corinthians nineseven through 14, Paul says that
we should give to those who feedus spiritually. Verses 11
through 14 say if we sowedspiritual things in you, is it
so much to ask to harvest somematerial things from you? If
others have these rights overyou? Don't we deserve them all,
the more. However, we haven'tmade use of this right, but we

(20:34):
put up with everything. So wedon't put any obstacle in the
way of the gospel of Christ.Don't you know that those who
serve in the temple get to eatfood from the temple, And those
who serve at the altar sharepart of what is sacrificed on
the altar. In the same way, theLord commanded that those who
preach the gospel should gettheir living from the gospel.

(20:54):
Then remember, this is Paulspeaking under the inspiration
of the Holy Spirit. Beloved, ifwe accept the Bible is true,
then we need to accept theseverses is true. Now, let me tell
you my experience in giving.First, I was not brought up in a
believing home. My parentsdidn't go to church, though my
mom did, at least in her teenyears. And I wasn't even aware

(21:16):
of that fact, until after shepassed away when I was going
through some of her papers, Andfound that she was a leader in
our youth group. But since mydad was very much anti church
And anti God, going to churchwas a non starter when I was a
boy. I tell you that to say thatI did not have any training from
home on giving to God's work. Now when I got saved as a

(21:39):
teenager, I've got to admit thatI was a stingy giver. I didn't
mind putting $1 Or maybe a fiveinto my offering envelope, but I
never gave anything approachinga tithe. I never even considered
giving a tie that never enteredmy mind. Man. Once I became an
adult And was aware of tithing,I rationalized that Christians
are under the new covenant Andwere therefore not obligated to

(22:00):
tithe, so I didn't need to give10% By the end, I'd graduated to
regularly dropping a $20 billinto the offering plate. I
figured that God loves acheerful giver, And I didn't
feel too badly about putting a20 in, but much more than that
it would be more difficult to becheerful. And then sometime in
my 40s, I think it was after I'dbeen faithfully serving God in

(22:23):
my church for many years. Mywife, the Lovely Lady LeeAnn,
suggested that we start tithing,I told her that we were under
the new covenant And yada yadayada. well, unlike me, Leanne
had literally grown up inchurch. Her parents were
faithful believers who were atchurch whenever the doors were
opened, And that is not anexaggeration. They were a

(22:45):
military family. And whereverthey were stationed, the first
thing they do when they got intoa new town was to find the local
Assemblies of God church, Andimmediately get plugged in. So
Leanne had an excellent exampleof faithful giving, And
specifically tithing at aminimum. So when I gave Leanne,
My reasoning for not tithing, she did what every good

(23:06):
Christian wife should do. Shethrew a fit, she argued with me.
She said, we have to, no shedidn't. She accepted my answer.
But then she began to pray forme. She didn't tell me that she
was praying specifically forthis, but I know now that that's
what she was doing. And thenover time, I began to question
myself. I don't remember if thisprocess took several months, or

(23:30):
even a year or more, but one dayin a time of prayer, I
remembered the verse AndMalikai, bring the whole tithe
into the storehouse, that theremay be food in my house, test me
in this says the Lord Almighty,And see if I will not throw open
the floodgates of heaven Andpour out so much blessing that
there will not be room enough tostore it. So I said, Okay, God,

(23:53):
I'll try it. I'll give tithesAnd I'll see if I can still pay
the bills, or words to thateffect. well, of course, Leanne
was thrilled. I can't say that Iwas thrilled. But God had shown
me in other ways that he'sfaithful. So I was willing to
take the step of faith. And itwas a step of faith. We had a
mortgage, we had three sons, weonly had my business to pay the

(24:17):
bills. Leanne was a stay at homemom. So all we had was my
income. well, how did the testturn out? Let me answer it this
way. I have never, we have nevergone back to stingy giving. That
doesn't mean that God has madeus financially rich. Over the
years, we've had some lean yearsAnd some fat years, there have

(24:37):
been times where we literallyhad zero in the bank account,
And we had nothing to give. Butas soon as there was something
from which to give, we typed Andsometimes we've given above And
beyond the tithe when we sawsomeone in need or for a special
project. And it was after webegan to tithe that God called
me to begin the world's firstChristian podcast. I won't tell

(24:59):
the whole story Are you herebecause most of you have heard
it. But for new people, I'lljust say it a nutshell. I was
praying one day thanking God forall the blessings he brought
into our lives. And I asked himif there was anything more that
I could do for him. And that'swhen he spoke to me And said,
proclaim My name. There's a lotmore to the story. And you can
read it at Steve dotLifespringmedia.com. If you're

(25:21):
interested, I'll just say thisfinancially. I am not a wealthy
man, far from it. But God hasblessed my life And my family so
very much. Sure we havestruggles like everybody else.
But LeeAnn and I have awonderful marriage. And we have
a faith in God that is deep Andabiding. God has shown me that

(25:41):
trusting Him in all things, evenin giving is something that he
does bless. Are we required totithe? No, but it's my firm
conviction that at least a titheis an appropriate amount to
return to the God who gave Hisone And only Son so that I might
live in eternity with Him. Irecommend it. As the Scripture

(26:03):
says in Malikai, 310, bring thewhole tithe into the storehouse,
that there may be food in myhouse, test me in this as the
Lord God Almighty, And see if Iwill not throw open the
