In that moment, it
felt like I was on top of a
careening freight train!
Coming to you from Riverside,California, this is the
Lifespring! One Year Bible inpodcasting since 2004. I'm your
OG Godcaster. Steve Webb. Todayis Psalms Wednesday And we'll
(00:22):
read chapters 93 through 95.Plus, we'll continue our
essential series And we'll havea time of prayer. Before we get
started, let's pray. OurHeavenly Father, we thank you
for this time And we pray thatYou would bless us as we read,
we pray that you would teach usopen our minds And touch our
hearts. I pray this in Jesusname. Amen. Okay, let's begin.
(00:46):
Introduction to Psalm 93. ThisPsalm has no title but of Psalm
93. James Montgomery boys wrote,Psalm 93 describes a theocracy
as do the seven psalms thatfollow it. The words Yahweh
Mielec, or Jehovah reigns orJehovah is king, are the
watchwords of these theocraticsongs. Now, as we know most if
(01:10):
not all, theocracies that haveexisted or exist today become
miserable failures becausethey're instituted And enforced
by man, flawed human beings.Only a theocracy with the
perfect just loving And mercifulGod will ever be successful.
Psalms 93 The Lord is King. Heis robed in majesty. Indeed, the
(01:36):
Lord is robed in majesty Andarmed with strength. The world
stands firm And cannot beshaken. Your throne, O LORD has
stood from time immemorial. Youyourself are from the
everlasting past. The floodshave risen up Oh, Lord, the
floods have roared like thunder. The floods have lifted their
pounding waves, but mightierthan the violent raging Of The
(01:59):
Seas, mightier than the breakerson the shore. The Lord above is
mightier than these. Your royallaws cannot be changed your rain
oh Lord is holy, forever Andever.
Psalm 94 has no title either butcommentator G. Campbell, Morgan
wrote, In this song we see howthese very things which is
(02:22):
assault, faith, And threatenedto produce despair may be the
opportunity for praise in theplace an act of worship.
Psalms chapter 94. Oh Lord, theGod of vengeance, oh god of
vengeance. Let your gloriousjustice shine forth. A rise, oh,
(02:42):
Judge of the earth. Give theproud what they deserve. How
long Oh, Lord, how long will thewicked be allowed to gloat? How
long will they speak witharrogance? How long will these
evil people boast? They crushyour people, Lord, hurting those
who claim as your own. They killwidows And foreigners And murder
(03:03):
orphans. The Lord isn't lookingthey say, And besides the God of
Israel doesn't care. Thinkagain. You fools. When will you
finally catch on? Is he deaf? The one who made your ears? Is
he blind, the one who formedyour eyes. He punishes the
nation's Won't he also punishyou. He knows everything.
(03:26):
Doesn't he also know what you'redoing? The Lord knows people's
thoughts. He knows they'reworthless. Joyful are those you
discipline Lord, those you teachwith your instructions. You give
them relief from troubled timesuntil a pit is dug to capture
the wicked. The Lord will notreject His people, He will not
(03:46):
abandon his special possession.Judgment will again be founded
on justice And those withvirtuous hearts will pursue it.
Who will protect me from thewicked, who will stand up for me
against evil doers. Unless theLord had helped me I would soon
have settled in the silence ofthe grave. I cried out I'm
slipping, but your unfailinglove Oh Lord supported me. When
(04:11):
doubts filled my mind, yourcomfort gave me renewed hope And
cheer. Can unjust leaders claimthat God is on their side
leaders whose decrees permitinjustice. they gang up against
the righteous And condemned theinnocent to death. But the Lord
is my fortress. My God is themighty rock where I hide. God
(04:32):
will turn the sins of evilpeople back on them, he will
destroy them for their sins, theLord our God will destroy them.
Psalm 95 is also Untitled, theauthor of the New Testament book
of Hebrews, under theinspiration of the Holy Spirit,
quoted And wrote about Psalm 95In chapters three And four of
(04:54):
that book. Again, let's hearwhat James Montgomery boys said
about this song. He said This isprobably the most thorough
citing of an Old Testamentpassage in the New Testament.
Psalms chapter 95. Come let ussing to the Lord. Let us shout
joyfully to the rock of oursalvation. Let us come to him
(05:15):
with thanksgiving. Let us singpsalms of praise to Him. For the
Lord is a great God, a greatKing above all gods. He holds in
his hands the depths of theearth And the mightiest
mountains. The sea belongs tohim, for he made it his hands
formed the dry land to come, letus worship And bow down. Let us
(05:37):
kneel before the Lord our Makerfor He is our God. We are the
people he watches over the flockunder his care. If only you
would listen to his voice today, the Lord says, Don't harden your
hearts is Israel did it Mara baas they did it Massa in the
wilderness. For there yourancestors tested And tried my
(05:58):
patience, even though they saweverything I did. For 40 years I
was angry with them. And I said, they are a people whose hearts
turn away from me. They refuseto do what I tell them. So in my
anger, I took an oath, they willnever enter my place of rest.
Beloved, I don't know about you,but I can't help but get excited
(06:21):
when I read chapters like theones we read today. Psalm 93
declares that God is King thenproceeds to illustrate in great
majestic language how this istrue. Verse four says, But
mightier than the violent ragingOf The Seas, mightier than the
breakers on the shore, the Lordabove is mightier than these.
(06:44):
Now, when I read that verse, Iam immediately taken back to a
morning when I was about 17 or18 years old. It was a
beautiful, sunny SouthernCalifornia day. And I was at a
spot right on the border ofHuntington Beach in Newport
Beach. My friends, And I calledit the jetty. And the waves were
pumping that day. The sets werecoming in at about 12 feet, And
(07:07):
they were perfectly shaped forsurfing. They had the kind of
beautiful round tubes that surfphotographers just love. And
they were the biggest waves thatI'd ever personally seen in
person. That was a truly rareday. And I was terrified. Sure,
they were great waves And theguys that are out there, we're
getting spectacular rides, but Ihad never ridden waves this big.
(07:30):
I was used to the average wavesthat come through two to four
feet in that area. And I hadwritten hundreds if not 1000s of
those waves. But these 12footers were a completely new
experience. Just paddling outwas a challenge. Even though I
was in great shape at that time, having been a competitive
swimmer for probably 10 years. With a lot of first place
(07:50):
finishes, I was having a hardtime making progress as I tried
to paddle out. These waves werestronger than anything I had
ever experienced. I feltcompletely helpless. But finally
there was a lull between thesets And I was able to paddle
out to where the other guys werewaiting to grab a ride when the
next set came through. And as wewaited, I was able to rest And
(08:12):
regain my strength. The fatiguein my shoulders faded, my
breathing relaxed, And I watchedthe horizon waiting for signs of
the next set. I didn't have towait very long. Pretty soon I
could see the color of thehorizon get darker And rise as
the swell rushed in toward theshore. I turned my board around
(08:32):
to face the beach And began topaddle as hard as I could. And
before I knew it, the swellbegan to lift me up And push me
faster And faster, And the wavebegan to break. The tube was
just beginning to form as Istood up, And I looked down the
face of the biggest wave I hadever been on. In that moment. It
felt like I was on top of acareening freight train. But I
(08:54):
was in the wrong spot on thewave. And all of a sudden I
found myself being thrown frommy board like a rag doll. The
next thing I knew I wasunderwater being pushed down as
I tumbled helplessly holding mybreath And waiting for the force
of the wave to release me. Andthen I felt a sharp pain on my
left arm just below the shoulderis the rail or the edge of my
(09:16):
board struck me as theturbulence of the wave had
control of both of us. Finally, after what seemed like an
eternity, it released me And Iwas able to make it to the
surface. As I looked around, Icould see I was about 75 yards
from the beach where I could seemy board already on the shore. I
swam in humbled, still feelingthe pain in my arm And found
(09:39):
that my board had also sufferedan injury. There was a brand new
ding on the rail about an inchdeep And four inches long. well
the bruise on my arm healed buteven after repairing the ding my
surfboard carried a scar thatalways reminded me of the power
of that wave. But mightier thanthe violent raging of See
(10:00):
mightier than the breakers onthe shore, the Lord above is
mightier than these. Psalm 94opens by referring to God is the
God of vengeance. This is aninteresting word. I think that
too many people Vengeance has anegative connotation. And in the
hands of man, vengeance can bean ugly And negative thing. But
(10:22):
that's because man's vengeanceis often not based on perfect
justice. But listen to theOxford dictionary definition of
the word, Vengeance ispunishment, inflicted, or
retribution exacted for aninjury or wrong now, who better
than the author of all that isright in good to be the one to
(10:43):
exact vengeance? Who better tojudge those who injure or wrong,
the innocent? Psalm 94, imploresGod to let his glorious justice
shine forth, to give the proudwhat they deserve to punish the
evil who kill widows And murderorphans. Our culture often
doesn't like to hear that theretruly is evil in the world, or
(11:06):
if they do, many don't thinkthat the ultimate punishment,
death should be meted out. Theysay, We don't have the right to
kill another human being nomatter how bad they are, or what
they have done. Maybe that'strue. But God does have the
right And that is what theauthor of this psalm is calling
for. We certainly don't have theright to play God, but God does.
(11:30):
And then Psalm 95 is a call forus to sing And shout joyfully to
the Lord, the rock of oursalvation, it shows him as our
shepherd And us as the flockunder his care. This is a call
to us to kneel before him, trusting that we will be safe as
he watches over us. I am amazedAnd humbled that this holy And
(11:52):
righteous God, Creator ofeverything that is takes note of
me at all, And nothing in thegrand scheme of things. And when
I ponder the vastness of theuniverse, when I think of my
failures, when I look at hisInfinite greatness, I have to
ask myself why this God wouldcare about me. But then I'm
reminded of the scripture thatsimply says, God is love. And
(12:16):
then John 315, through 18 says,For this is how God loved the
world. He gave His one And onlySon so that everyone who
believes in Him will not perishbut have eternal life. God sent
His Son into the world not tojudge the world, but to save the
world through Him. There is nojudgment against anyone who
(12:36):
believes in Him. How wonderfulis his name. I'd love to hear

Steve Webb (13:44):
This is number 10 In
our series on the essentials of
the faith And today we're goingto continue talking about what
we believe about Jesus. Lastweek we talked about the fact
that Jesus lived a sinless life.Today we'll talk about the fact
that Jesus voluntarily atone forthe sins of men by dying on the
cross as their substitute, thussatisfying divine justice And
(14:05):
accomplishing salvation for allwho trusted him alone. well,
let's break that sentence upinto bite sized pieces, shall
we? Jesus voluntarily atone forthe sins of men? well, we know
that Jesus did this voluntarilyfor many scriptures. But the one
that my mind first goes to iswhen he was praying in the
Garden of Gethsemane on thenight before he was betrayed. He
(14:27):
knew what the next several hourswould bring. He knew that he
would be put on trial, he knewthat he would be mercilessly
beaten. He knew that he wouldhang on a cross And the worst
part, he knew that when the sinof all mankind fell on him, God
the Father would for the firsttime from eternity past, turn
his back on him, And he would becompletely alone, something he
(14:51):
had never before experienced,And he knew that his body would
die. The reality weighed heavilyon him And in the Garden of Eden
he fell on his face And prayed, saying, My Father, if it'd be
possible, let this cup pass fromme. Nevertheless, not as I will.
But as you will know. Jesuswasn't thrilled about making the
(15:13):
sacrifice, but he was obedientto the Father. He knew that it
was the very reason he was born. And so he volunteered to
complete the mission, not of hiswill, but the fathers. He could
have said, No, I will not dothis. But then he would have
been in opposition to the Fatherwhich would have been sin, but
of course he would not sin. Now,the next part of the sentence,
(15:39):
Jesus voluntarily atoned for thesins of men. well, what does it
tone mean? According to theCollins dictionary, it means
satisfaction or reparation for awrong or injury. well, why was
atonement necessary? Paul gave avery succinct answer to that
question in Romans 623, For thewages of sin is death. In Romans
(16:03):
323, we're told under theinspiration of the Holy Spirit,
For all have sinned And fallshort of the glory of God, all
of us. So we're all subjected tothe guilty verdict with a
punishment being death. That wasour debt to pay. We committed
the sin And the wages or what weearn, The wages of sin is death.
(16:27):
Let's continue. Jesusvoluntarily atone for the sins
of men by dying on the cross astheir substitute. So, Jesus, who
knew no sin, took my sin Andyours upon himself, in order to
make atonement for us. He paidour debt so that we don't have
(16:47):
to. Our debt was completely Andtotally paid by what Jesus did
on the cross. Jesus voluntarilyatone for the sins of men by
dying on the cross as theirsubstitute, thus satisfying
divine justice. God is a God ofperfect justice, so sin must be
(17:09):
punished. He can't pretend itdidn't happen. sin must be
reckoned with, And thepunishment is eternal separation
from God. well, Jesus took ourpunishment upon himself And in
so doing, God's justice wasserved, the penalty of sin was
carried out. Okay, we're down tothe last part of the sentence,
(17:31):
Jesus voluntarily atone for thesins of men by dying on the
cross as their substitute, thussatisfying divine justice And
accomplishing salvation for allwho trust in him alone. He
accomplished salvation for allwho trust in Him alone.
Salvation means to be saved. Those who trust in Him alone are
(17:53):
saved from punishment of sins.Jesus said, I am the WAY And the
Truth And the Life. No one comesto the Father except through me.
He said that John 14, six, FirstTimothy two five says, four
there is one God And there isone mediator between God And
(18:14):
men, the man Jesus Christ, whogave Himself as a ransom for
all. In John 635, Jesus said,Buy in the bread of life,
Whoever comes to me shall nothunger, And whoever believes in
me shall never thirst. Beloved, only those who come to Jesus
will be saved. He is the WAY theTRUTH And the Life. Now in
(18:36):
Matthew 24, in his last week onearth, the disciples asked him,
What would be the signs of theend times And part of his answer
in verse 23, he said, If anyonesays to you, look, here's the
Christ or there he is, do notbelieve it. For false christs
And false prophets will ariseAnd perform great signs And
wonders so as to lead astray ifpossible, even the elect. So
(18:59):
beloved, it is vitallyimperative that the Jesus in
whom you put your trust is theJesus we've been speaking of.
Except no substitutes. He is theonly way. Next Wednesday, Lord
willing, we'll talk about thefact that he rose from the dead
in the same body thoughglorified, in which he lived in
(19:20):
died. I welcome your commentsAnd questions at
