Transcript Today's Bible Translation Bible translation used in today's episode: Ch. 23-24 NIRV Podcast Introduction It’s Poetry Thursday, and we’ll read Proverbs 23-24. I’m calling this episode “Hope in a Troubled World.“ Design: Scott Snider | Photo: Vladislav Babienko on Unsplash Summary Proverbs 24:11-12 sound prophetic. My belief is that we are in the last days. As Christians, we must be prepared to take action and not deny our faith. If we die knowing Jesus, there is no loss. We should intervene or pray for victims of evil. The world is in trouble, and some of us may be called to face similar situations. Listen to the episode for more! Support This a value for value podcast. (00:43):
Before we read, let's pray. Ourgracious heavenly Father, we
thank you for your Word, and wethank you for this time that we
can be together. I pray, Lord, that you would bless our time of
reading today. I pray this inJesus' name. Amen. Okay, let's
begin.
Proverbs, chapter 23. 6. Whenyou sit down to eat with a

(01:05):
ruler, look carefully at what'sin front of you. Put a knife to
your throat if you like to eattoo much. Don't long for his
fancy food. It can fool you. 7.Don't wear yourself out to get
rich. Be wise enough to say no.When you take even a quick look
at riches, they are gone. Theygrow wings and fly away into the

(01:26):
sky like an eagle. 8. Don't eatthe food of anyone who won't
share it. Don't long for hisfancy food. He is the kind of
person who is always thinkingabout how much it costs. "Eat
and drink," he says to you. Buthe doesn't mean it. You will
throw up what little you haveeaten. You will have wasted your

(01:47):
words of praise. 9. Don't speakto a foolish person. He will
laugh at your wise words. 10.Don't move old boundary stones.
Don't try to take over thefields of children whose fathers
have died. The One who guardsthem is strong. He will stand up
for them in court against you.11. Apply your heart to what you

(02:12):
are taught. Listen carefully towords of knowledge. 12. Don't
hold back training from a child. If you correct him, he won't
die. So correct him. Then youwill save him from death. 13. My
child, if your heart is wise, myheart will be glad. Deep down
inside, I will be happy when yousay what is right. 14. Do not

(02:38):
long for what sinners have. Butalways show great respect for
the Lord. There really is hopefor you tomorrow. So your hope
will not be cut off. 15. Mychild, listen and be wise. Keep
your heart on the right path.Don't join those who drink too
much wine. Don't join those whostuff themselves with meat.

(03:02):
Those who drink or eat too muchwill become poor. If they sleep
too much, they'll have to wearrags. 16. Listen to your father,
who gave you life. Don't hateyour mother when she is old. Buy
the truth. Don't sell it. Getwisdom, training and
understanding. The father of agodly child is very happy.

(03:25):
Anyone who has a wise child isglad. May your father and mother
be glad. May the woman who gavebirth to you be happy. 17. My
son, give me your heart. Keepyour eyes on the way I live. A
prostitute is like a deep pit. Awife who commits adultery is

(03:45):
like a narrow well. She hidesand waits like a thief. She
causes many men to sin. 18. Whohas trouble? Who has sorrow? Who
argues? Who has problems? Whohas wounds for no reason? Who
has red eyes? Those who spendtoo much time with wine. Or

(04:06):
those who like to taste winethat is mixed with spices. Don't
look at wine when it is red.Don't look at it when it bubbles
in the cup. And don't look at itwhen it goes down smoothly. In
the end it bites like a snake. It bites like a poisonous
serpent. Your eyes will seestrange sights. Your mind will
imagine weird things. You willfeel like someone sleeping on

(04:30):
the ocean. You will think youare lying among the ropes in a
boat. "They hit me," you willsay. "But I'm not hurt! They
beat me. But I don't feel it!When will I wake up so I can
find another drink?"
Proverbs, chapter 24. 19. Do notwant what evil men have. Don't
long to be with them. In theirhearts they plan to hurt others.

(04:53):
With their lips they talk aboutmaking trouble. 20. By wisdom a
house is built. Throughunderstanding it is made secure.
Through knowledge its rooms arefilled with priceless and
beautiful things. 21. A wise manhas great power. A man who has
knowledge increases hisstrength. If you go to war, you

(05:17):
need guidance. If you want towin, you need many good
advisers. 22. Wisdom is too highfor anyone who is foolish. He
has nothing to say when peoplemeet at the city gate to conduct
business. 23. Anyone who thinksup sinful things to do will be

(05:37):
known as one who plans evil.Foolish plans are sinful. People
hate those who make fun ofothers. 24. If you grow weak
when trouble comes, yourstrength is very small! 25. Save
those who are being led away todeath. Hold back those who are

(06:00):
about to be killed. Don't say,"But we didn't know anything
about this." The One who knowswhat you are thinking sees it.
The One who guards your lifeknows it. He will pay each
person back for what he hasdone. 26. Eat honey, my child.
It is good. Honey from ahoneycomb has a sweet taste. I

(06:22):
want you to know that wisdom issweet to you. If you find it,
there is hope for you tomorrow. So your hope will not be cut
off. 27. Don't hide and waitlike a burglar at a godly
person's house. Don't rob hishome. Even if godly people fall
down seven times, they alwaysget up. But those who are evil

(06:44):
are brought down by trouble. 28.Don't be happy when your enemy
falls. When he trips, don't letyour heart be glad. The LORD
will see it, but he won't bepleased. He might turn his anger
away from your enemy. 29. Don'tbe upset because of evil people.

(07:05):
Don't long for what sinnershave. Tomorrow evil people won't
have any hope. The lamps ofsinners will be blown out. 30.
My son, have respect for theLORD and the king. Don't join
those who disobey them. The LORDand the king will suddenly
destroy them. Who knows whattrouble those two can bring?

(07:28):
Here are more sayings of thosewho are wise. Taking sides in
court is not good. A curse willfall on those who say the guilty
are not guilty. Nations willcall down curses on them. People
will speak against them. But itwill go well with those who
sentence guilty people. Richblessings will come to them. An
honest answer is like a kiss onthe lips. Finish your outdoor

(07:52):
work. Get your fields ready. After that, build your house.
Don't give witness against yourneighbor without any reason.
Don't use your lips to telllies. Don't say, "I'll do to him
what he did to me. I'll get evenwith that man for what he did."
I went past the field of someonewho didn't want to work. I went

(08:13):
past the vineyard of a man whodidn't have any sense. Thorns
had grown up everywhere. Theground was covered with weeds.
The stone wall had fallen down.I applied my heart to what I
observed. I learned a lessonfrom what I saw. You might sleep
a little or take a little nap.You might even fold your hands
and rest. Then you would bepoor, as if someone had robbed

(08:36):
you. You would have little, asif someone had stolen from you.
Listen again to verses 11 and 12of chapter 24 and see if they
don't sound prophetic as if theymay be applied to the Holocaust
of World War Two. "Save thosewho are being led away to death.
Hold back those who are about tobe killed. Don't say that we

(08:58):
didn't know anything about this.Doesn't the God who knows what
you're thinking, see it? Doesn'tthe God who guards your life
know it? He will pay backeveryone for what they have
done." Beloved, you've heard mesay that I believe that we are
quite literally in the lastdays. I believe that we will see
more crimes against humanitythan have ever been committed,

(09:19):
including the Holocaust. Theseverses from Proverbs make it
clear that it is ourresponsibility to stand in the
way when we see things like thishappen. And even today,
literally today Christians arebeing killed because of their
faith in various places aroundthe world and it's going to
spread. We need to be preparedto take action when possible and

(09:40):
to not renounce our faith whenit's demanded of us. I saw a
t-shirt design recently thatsuccinctly stated what our
attitude should be. It said, "Iwould rather die on my feet than
live on my knees." We must notbend our knees to those who
would demand that we deny Jesus.I mean after all really the
worst they can do is kill us.And Paul said in 2 Corinthians

(10:03):
5:8, "We are confident, I say,and would prefer to be away from
the body and at home with theLord." So really, there is no
loss if we die if we know Jesus. We will be with him. But we need
to know that when people aresuffering and being put to death
if it's in our power, we areresponsible to intervene. At the

(10:24):
very least, we should be inprayer right now for the victims
of evil people. Well, it isn'toften that my comments are this
heavy, but the reality is thatthe world is in trouble. I don't
think anybody would deny that. And it just might be that some
of us in the Lifespring familywill be called into this kind of
situation. I just felt like Ineeded to give you encouragement

(10:45):
when and if that day comes. Whatare your thoughts? Comments?
Questions? Contact informationis coming up in a moment.
Tomorrow will be ProphecyFriday, and we'll read Amos 1
through 4.
