It's Gospel Saturday and our reading today is John 16 through 18. I'm calling this episode "Jesus' Prayer for You." This should be the last pre-recorded show for a while, Beloved. If everything went according to plan, I got home last night at about 10 o'clock. But since that's the time I tried to get the show published, I pre-recorded this show. Tomorrow when I'm back, I'll give you a quick rundown of the trip. Before we read, let's pray. Our gracious heavenly Father, how we thank you for your Word, and oh my goodness, how we thank you for Jesus and his sacrifice. I pray, Lord, that as we read today, you would make it real to us. Touch our hearts and our minds, Lord. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen. All right, let's begin.
Steve Webb 1:06John, chapter 16. “I have told you these things so you will not be ashamed of Me and leave Me. They will put you out of the places of worship. The time will come when anyone who kills you will think he is helping God. They will do these things to you because they do not know the Father or Me. “When these things happen, you will remember I told you they would happen. That is why I am telling you about these things now. I did not tell you these things before, because I was with you. But now I am going to Him Who sent Me. Yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ “Your hearts are full of sorrow because I am telling you these things. I tell you the truth. It is better for you that I go away. If I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you. When the Helper comes, He will show the world the truth about sin. He will show the world about being right with God. And He will show the world what it is to be guilty. He will show the world about sin, because they do not put their trust in Me. He will show the world about being right with God, because I go to My Father and you will see Me no more. He will show the world what it is to be guilty because the leader of this world (Satan) is guilty. “I have many things to say to you. You are not strong enough to understand them now. The Holy Spirit is coming. He will lead you into all truth. He will not speak His Own words. He will speak what He hears. He will tell you of things to come. He will honor Me. He will receive what is Mine and will tell it to you. Everything the Father has is Mine. That is why I said to you, ‘He will receive what is Mine and will tell it to you.’ “In a little while you will not see Me. Then in a little while you will see Me again.

John, chapter 16. I have toldyou these things, so you will
not be ashamed of me And leaveme they will put you out of the
places of worship, the time willcome when anyone who kills you
will think he is helping God,they will do these things to you
because they do not know thefather or me. When these things

happen, you will remember I toldyou they would happen. That is
why I'm telling you about thesethings. Now. I did not tell you
these things before, because Iwas with you. But now I'm going
to Him who sent Me. Yet none ofyou asked me, Where are you
going? Your hearts are full ofsorrow, because I'm telling you
these things. I tell you thetruth, it is better for you that

I go away. If I do not go theHelper will not come to you. If
I go, I will send him to you.When the Helper comes, he will
show the world the truth aboutsin. He will show the world
about being right with God. Andhe will show the world what it
is to be guilty. He will showthe world about sin because they
do not put their trust in me. Hewill show the world about being

right with God because I go tomy father And you will see me no
more. He will show the worldwhat it is to be guilty because
the leader of this world Satanis guilty. I have many things to
say to you. You are not strongenough to understand them. Now.
The Holy Spirit is coming. Hewill lead you into all truth. He

will not speak his own words, hewill speak what he hears, He
will tell you of things to come,he will honor Me, he will
receive what is Mine And willtell it to you everything the
father has his mind. That is whysaid to you, he will receive
what is mine And we'll tell itto you in a little while you
will not see me. Then in alittle while you will see me

again. Some of his followerssaid to each other, What is he
trying to tell us when he saysin a little while you will not
see me it in a little while youwill see me again. And because I
go to my father. So they saidWhat is he trying to tell us by
saying a little while we do notknow what he was talking about?
Jesus knew they wanted to askhim something. He said to them,
(03:17):
are you asking each other why Isaid in a little while you will
not see me And in a little whileyou will see me again. For sure.
I tell you you will cry And havesorrow but the world will have
joy. You will have sorrow butyour sorrow will turn into joy.
When a woman gives birth to achild, she has sorrow because
her time has come. After thechild is born, she forgets her
(03:39):
pain. She is full of joy becausea child has been born into the
world. You are sad now I willsee you again And then your
hearts will be full of joy. Noone can take your joy from you.
When the time comes that you seeme again, you will ask me no
question. For sure. I tell you,My Father will give you whatever
you ask in my name. Until nowyou have not asked for anything

in my name. Ask And you willreceive then your joy will be
full. I have told you thesethings in picture stories. The
time is coming when I will notuse picture stories. I will talk
about my father in plain words.In that day you will ask in my
name. I will not ask the Fatherfor you because the Father loves
(04:23):
you. He loves you because youlove me And believe that I came
from the Father. I came from theFather And have come into this
world. I am leaving the worldAnd going to the Father. His
followers said to him now youare talking in plain words.
You're not using picturestories. Now we are sure you
know everything. You do not needanyone to tell you anything.

Because of this. We believe thatyou came from God. Jesus said to
them, Do you believe now thetime is coming? Yes, it is
already here. When you will begoing your own way. Everyone
will go to his own house Andleave me alone. yet I am not
alone, because the Father iswith me. I have told you these
things so that you may havepeace in me, in the world, you

will have much trouble. But takehope I have power over the
world.
John chapter 17. When Jesus hadspoken these words, he lifted up
his eyes to heaven And said,Father, be ours come, glorify
Your Son, that the Son mayglorify You, since you have
given him authority over allflesh, to give eternal life to
(05:30):
all whom You have given him. Andthis is eternal life, that they
know you the only true God, AndJesus Christ, whom you have
sent. I glorified You on earth,having accomplished the work
that you gave me to do. And nowFather, glorify Me in your own
presence with the glory that Ihad with you before the world
(05:52):
existed. I have manifested yourname to the people whom you gave
me out of the world, yours theywere, And you gave them to me,
And they have kept your word.Now they know that everything
that you have given me is fromyou. For I have given them the
words that you gave me. And theyhave received them, And have
(06:12):
come to know in truth that Icame from you, And they have
believed that You sent Me, I ampraying for them. I am not
praying for the world, but forthose whom You have given Me,
for they are yours, all mine areyours, And all yours are mine,
And I am glorified in them. AndI am no longer in the world, but
(06:33):
they are in the world, And I amcoming to you, Holy Father, keep
them in your name which You havegiven Me, that they may be one,
even as we are one. While I waswith them, I kept them in your
name which You have given me, Ihave guarded them, And not one
of them has been lost, exceptthe son of destruction, that the
(06:54):
Scripture might be fulfilled.But now I am coming to you. And
these things I speak in theworld, that they may have my joy
fulfilled in themselves, I havegiven them your word. And the
world has hated them becausethey are not of the world. Just
as I am not of the world, I donot ask that you take them out
of the world, but that you keepthem from the evil one. They are
(07:18):
not of the world, just as I amnot of the world. Sanctify them
in the truth, Your word istruth, as you sent me into the
world, so I have sent them intothe world. And for their sake, I
consecrate myself, that theyalso may be sanctified in truth.
I do not ask for these only, butalso for those who will believe
(07:40):
in me through their word, thatthey may all be one, just as you
father are in Me And I in you,that they also may be in us so
that the world may believe thatYou have sent me the glory that
You have given Me I have givento them, that they may be one
even as we are one, I in themAnd you in Me, that they may
(08:02):
become perfectly one, so thatthe world may know that you sent
me And love them, even as youloved me, Father, I desire that
they also whom You have given memay be with me where I am to see
my glory that you have given mebecause you loved me before the
foundation of the world. Oh,righteous father, even though
(08:24):
the world does not know you, Iknow you. And these know that
you have sent me. I made knownto them your name. And I will
continue to make it known thatthe love with which You have
loved Me, may be in them. And Iin them.
John chapter 18. After Jesus hadsaid these things, he went out
with his disciples across theKidron Valley where there was a
(08:46):
garden, And he And his discipleswent into it. Judas who betrayed
him also knew the place becauseJesus often met there with His
disciples. So Judas took acompany of soldiers And some
temple police from the chiefpriests And Pharisees, And came
there with lanterns, torches Andweapons. Then Jesus knowing
everything that was about tohappen to him, went out And said
(09:09):
to them, who was it? You'relooking for? Jesus, the
Nazarene. They answered, I amhe. Jesus told them, Judas, who
betrayed him was also standingwith them. When he told them I
am he, they stepped back Andfell to the ground. Then he
asked them again. Who is it?You're looking for? Jesus, the
Nazarene, they said. I told youI am He, Jesus replied. So if
(09:34):
you're looking for me, let thesemen go. This was to fulfill the
words he had said, I have notlost one of those you have given
me. Then Simon Peter, who had asword drew it struck the high
priests slave And cut off hisear. The slaves name was melkus
at that Jesus said to Petersheath your sword, am I not to
(09:55):
drink the cup the Father hasgiven me then the company of
soldiers, the commander in Inthe Jewish temple police
arrested Jesus And tied him up.First they led him to anus for
he was the father in law of chioffice who was high priest that
year. Chi office was the one whohad advised the Jews that it was
advantageous that one man shoulddie for the people. Meanwhile,

Simon Peter was following Jesusas was another disciple. That
disciple was an acquaintance ofthe high priest. So he went with
Jesus into the high priestscourtyard, but Peter remained
standing outside by the door. Sothe other disciple, the one
known to the high priest, wentout And spoke to the girl who
was the doorkeeper And broughtPeter in. Then the slave girl
(10:38):
who was the doorkeeper said toPeter, you weren't one of this
man's disciples too, are you? Iam not, he said. Now the slaves
in the temple police had made acharcoal fire because it was
cold. They were standing therewarming themselves in Peter was
standing with them warminghimself, the high priest
question Jesus about hisdisciples And about his
(10:59):
teaching. I have spoken openlyto the world, Jesus answered
him, I have always taught in thesynagogue And in the temple
complex, where all the Jewscongregate, And I haven't spoken
anything in secret. Why do youquestion me question those who

had said these things, one ofthe temple police standing by

slat Jesus saying, is this theway you answer the high priest?
If I've spoken wrongly, Jesusanswered him, give evidence

sent him bound to chi office,the high priest. Now Simon Peter
was standing And warminghimself. They said to Him, you

weren't one of his disciples toare you? He denied it And said,
I am not one of the high priestsslaves, a relative of the man
whose ear Peter had cut offsaid, didn't I see you with him
in the garden? Peter then deniedit again. Immediately, a rooster
crowed. Then they took Jesusfrom Caiaphas to the governor's
(12:01):
headquarters, it was earlymorning, they did not enter the
headquarters themselves,otherwise they would be defiled
And unable to eat the Passover.Then Pilate came out to them And
said, What charge do you bringagainst this man? They answered
him, if this man weren't acriminal, we wouldn't have
handed him over to you. SoPilate told him, Take Him
(12:23):
yourselves And judge himaccording to your law. It's not
legal for us to put anyone todeath, but Jews declared, they
said this, so that Jesus wordsmight be fulfilled, signifying
what kind of death he was goingto die. Then Pilate went back
into the headquarters summonedJesus And said to him, Are you
the king of the Jews? Jesusanswered, are you asking this on
(12:44):
your own? Or have others toldyou about me? I'm not a Jew, am
I? Pilate replied, your ownnation, And the chief priests
handed you over to me, What haveyou done? My kingdom is not of
this world, said Jesus. If mykingdom were of this world, my
servants would fight so that Iwouldn't be handed over to the
Jews. As it is, my kingdom doesnot have its origin. Here, you
(13:07):
are a king. Then Pilate asked,you say that I'm a king. Jesus
replied, I was born for this.And I have come into the world
for this, to testify to thetruth. Everyone who is of the
truth listens to my voice. Whatis truth, said Pilate. After he
had said this, he went out tothe Jews again And told them, I
(13:27):
find no grounds for charginghim. You have accustomed that I
released one prisoner to you atthe Passover. So do you want me
to release to you the king ofthe Jews? They shouted back, not
this man. But Barabbas. NowBarabbas was a revolutionary.
Did you know that there's aprayer by Jesus about you in the
(13:49):
Bible? How cool is that? Jesusprayed for you before his
crucifixion. He knew he was soongoing to be betrayed And turned
over to be beaten And hung onthe cross. He knew that his
purpose would soon be fulfilled.And he prayed to the Father
about many things, And you And Iwere on his mind. Jesus prayer
(14:11):
in John 17 is a marvelous lookinto the mind of our Savior in
the hours before the sacrificethat would change the eternities
of all who believe in Him. Theevents of the coming hours would
be the fulfillment of hismission. The reason he gave up
the glories of Heaven, to beborn into manger some 33 years
(14:32):
earlier. He prayed to the Fatheras the son, he said, Father, the
hour is come, glorify Your Son,that your son may also glorify
You. There had never been amoment when father And son were
out of touch with one another.Think about that. Jesus was with
the Father from eternity pastuntil this very moment when he
(14:54):
prayed this prayer. And he knewthat in just a few short hours,
the father would turn his faceaway. from him, when all the
sins of the world would beplaced on him, Jesus would be
completely alone, for the firsttime, in all of eternity. And
yet, he thought to pray for youAnd for me. First he prayed for
(15:15):
the disciples that they would beone as Jesus And the Father were
one, And that they would havehis Jesus Joy fulfilled in them.
What a prayer, the joy of Jesusfulfilled in them. Think about
what that means a perfect purejoy, a joy that comes from
knowing that you have perfectoneness with the Father, that
(15:36):
there is nothing separating youfrom him pure joy. And Jesus
prayed that the Father would nottake the disciples out of the
world, but that he would keepthem or protect them from the
evil one, from compromise fromfalling away from anything that
would keep them from running therace to a victorious finish. And
(15:58):
Jesus prayed that the Fatherwould sanctify the disciples by
the father's truth, to sanctifyhis to set apart for God's
purpose. And then Jesus said, byyour truth, how do we know what
God's truth is? By reading Hisword, hearing it, understanding
it And applying it to our lives,Jesus prayed that God's Word
(16:19):
would set the disciples apartfor his purposes. Beloved, it is
impossible for anyone to live alife of close relationship with
God or to be used by God, unlesshe or she is steeped in the Word
of God. The Christian life is arelationship with the Creator of
the Universe. That's amazing.That relationship is kept alive
(16:41):
And healthy And strong bystaying in contact one with the
other. How do we do that? Howdoes God communicate with us?
well, primarily through theBible, His Word, we communicate
with Him through prayer as Jesusdid. Now, after Jesus prayed for
his disciples, He prayed for youAnd for me, he said, I do not
(17:03):
ask for these only speaking ofthe disciples, but also for
those who will believe in methrough their word, that they
may all be one just as youfather are in Me And I in you,
that they also may be in us sothat the world may believe that
You have sent me the glory thatyou've given me, I have given to
(17:24):
them, that they may be one, evenas we are one, I in them, And
you And me, that they may becomeperfectly one, so that the world
may know that You sent Me Andloved them, even as you loved
me, Father, I desire that theyalso whom You have given me, may
be with me where I am to see myglory that you have given me,
(17:45):
because you loved me before thefoundation of the world. Oh,
righteous father, even thoughthe world does not know you, I
know you. And these know thatyou have said me, I made known
to them your name. And I willcontinue to make it known that
the love with which You haveloved Me may be in them, And I
(18:06):
in them. There is a lot in thatprayer isn't their beloved. And
there are many takeaways. Ireally do encourage you to
meditate on this part of JesusPrayer. Get some quiet time with
your Bible And with the Lord Andslowly read each part starting
at verse 20. And then read allthe way to the end of the
(18:28):
chapter. Evangelist preacher,Bible Teacher And commentator G.
Campbell. Morgan wrote aboutthis part of Jesus Prayer, he
said, he prayed for them. Heprays for us, he knew his
intercession for them wouldprevail. He knows his
intercession for us willprevail, then let us rest in Him
with the rest of lovingobedience And of surest
(18:51):
confidence. Yes, beloved, we canmost assuredly rest in Him,
despite the gales that blowaround us in these troubling
times, And yes, they are, we canrest in Him. Have you ever

your own? Or have others toldyou about me? I'm not a Jew, am
I? Pilate replied, your ownnation, And the chief priests
handed you over to me, What haveyou done? My kingdom is not of
this world, said Jesus. If mykingdom were of this world, my
servants would fight so that Iwouldn't be handed over to the
Jews. As it is, my kingdom doesnot have its origin. Here, you

are a king. Then Pilate asked,you say that I'm a king. Jesus
replied, I was born for this.And I have come into the world
for this, to testify to thetruth. Everyone who is of the
truth listens to my voice. Whatis truth, said Pilate. After he

find no grounds for charginghim. You have accustomed that I
released one prisoner to you atthe Passover. So do you want me

Did you know that there's aprayer by Jesus about you in the
(13:49):
Bible? How cool is that? Jesusprayed for you before his
crucifixion. He knew he was soongoing to be betrayed And turned
over to be beaten And hung onthe cross. He knew that his
purpose would soon be fulfilled.And he prayed to the Father
about many things, And you And Iwere on his mind. Jesus prayer
(14:11):
in John 17 is a marvelous lookinto the mind of our Savior in
the hours before the sacrificethat would change the eternities
of all who believe in Him. Theevents of the coming hours would
be the fulfillment of hismission. The reason he gave up
the glories of Heaven, to beborn into manger some 33 years
(14:32):
earlier. He prayed to the Fatheras the son, he said, Father, the
hour is come, glorify Your Son,that your son may also glorify
You. There had never been amoment when father And son were
out of touch with one another.Think about that. Jesus was with
the Father from eternity pastuntil this very moment when he
(14:54):
prayed this prayer. And he knewthat in just a few short hours,
the father would turn his faceaway. from him, when all the
sins of the world would beplaced on him, Jesus would be
completely alone, for the firsttime, in all of eternity. And
yet, he thought to pray for youAnd for me. First he prayed for
(15:15):
the disciples that they would beone as Jesus And the Father were
one, And that they would havehis Jesus Joy fulfilled in them.
What a prayer, the joy of Jesusfulfilled in them. Think about
what that means a perfect purejoy, a joy that comes from
knowing that you have perfectoneness with the Father, that
(15:36):
there is nothing separating youfrom him pure joy. And Jesus
prayed that the Father would nottake the disciples out of the
world, but that he would keepthem or protect them from the
evil one, from compromise fromfalling away from anything that
would keep them from running therace to a victorious finish. And
(15:58):
Jesus prayed that the Fatherwould sanctify the disciples by
the father's truth, to sanctifyhis to set apart for God's
purpose. And then Jesus said, byyour truth, how do we know what
God's truth is? By reading Hisword, hearing it, understanding
it And applying it to our lives,Jesus prayed that God's Word
(16:19):
would set the disciples apartfor his purposes. Beloved, it is
impossible for anyone to live alife of close relationship with
God or to be used by God, unlesshe or she is steeped in the Word
of God. The Christian life is arelationship with the Creator of
the Universe. That's amazing.That relationship is kept alive
(16:41):
And healthy And strong bystaying in contact one with the
other. How do we do that? Howdoes God communicate with us?
well, primarily through theBible, His Word, we communicate
with Him through prayer as Jesusdid. Now, after Jesus prayed for
his disciples, He prayed for youAnd for me, he said, I do not
(17:03):
ask for these only speaking ofthe disciples, but also for
those who will believe in methrough their word, that they
may all be one just as youfather are in Me And I in you,
that they also may be in us sothat the world may believe that
You have sent me the glory thatyou've given me, I have given to
(17:24):
them, that they may be one, evenas we are one, I in them, And
you And me, that they may becomeperfectly one, so that the world
may know that You sent Me Andloved them, even as you loved
me, Father, I desire that theyalso whom You have given me, may
be with me where I am to see myglory that you have given me,
(17:45):
because you loved me before thefoundation of the world. Oh,
righteous father, even thoughthe world does not know you, I
know you. And these know thatyou have said me, I made known
to them your name. And I willcontinue to make it known that
the love with which You haveloved Me may be in them, And I
(18:06):
in them. There is a lot in thatprayer isn't their beloved. And
there are many takeaways. Ireally do encourage you to
meditate on this part of JesusPrayer. Get some quiet time with
your Bible And with the Lord Andslowly read each part starting
at verse 20. And then read allthe way to the end of the
(18:28):
chapter. Evangelist preacher,Bible Teacher And commentator G.
Campbell. Morgan wrote aboutthis part of Jesus Prayer, he
said, he prayed for them. Heprays for us, he knew his
intercession for them wouldprevail. He knows his
intercession for us willprevail, then let us rest in Him
with the rest of lovingobedience And of surest
(18:51):
confidence. Yes, beloved, we canmost assuredly rest in Him,
despite the gales that blowaround us in these troubling
times, And yes, they are, we canrest in Him. Have you ever
