Steve Webb (01:03):
John, chapter 19.
Then Pilate ordered that Jesus
be taken away and whipped. Thesoldiers made a crown from some
thorny branches and put it onJesus’ head and put a purple
robe around him. Then they cameto him many times and said,
“Hail, King of the Jews!” andhit him in the face. Again
Pilate came out and said tothem, “Look, I am bringing Jesus
(01:26):
out to you. I want you to knowthat I find nothing against
him.” So Jesus came out, wearingthe crown of thorns and the
purple robe. Pilate said tothem, “Here is the man!” When
the leading priests and theguards saw Jesus, they shouted,
“Crucify him! Crucify him!” ButPilate answered, “Crucify him
(01:46):
yourselves, because I findnothing against him.” The
leaders answered, “We have a lawthat says he should die, because
he said he is the Son of God.”When Pilate heard this, he was
even more afraid. He went backinside the palace and asked
Jesus, “Where do you come from?”But Jesus did not answer him.
Pilate said, “You refuse tospeak to me? Don’t you know I
(02:09):
have power to set you free andpower to have you crucified?”
Jesus answered, “The only poweryou have over me is the power
given to you by God. The man whoturned me in to you is guilty of
a greater sin.” After this,Pilate tried to let Jesus go.
But some in the crowd cried out,“Anyone who makes himself king
(02:32):
is against Caesar. If you letthis man go, you are no friend
of Caesar.” When Pilate heardwhat they were saying, he
brought Jesus out and sat downon the judge’s seat at the place
called The Stone Pavement. (Inthe Hebrew language the name is
Gabbatha.) It was about noon onPreparation Day of Passover
week. Pilate said to the crowd,“Here is your king!” They
(02:55):
shouted, “Take him away! Takehim away! Crucify him!” Pilate
asked them, “Do you want me tocrucify your king?” The leading
priests answered, “The only kingwe have is Caesar.” So Pilate
handed Jesus over to them to becrucified. The soldiers took
charge of Jesus. Carrying hisown cross, Jesus went out to a
(03:17):
place called The Place of theSkull, which in the Hebrew
language is called Golgotha. There they crucified Jesus. They
also crucified two other men,one on each side, with Jesus in
the middle. Pilate wrote a signand put it on the cross. It
read (03:34):
jesus of nazareth, the
king of the jews. The sign was
written in Hebrew, in Latin, andin Greek. Many of the people
read the sign, because the placewhere Jesus was crucified was
near the city. The leadingpriests said to Pilate, “Don’t
write, ‘The King of the Jews.’But write, ‘This man said, “I am
the King of the Jews.” ’ ”Pilateanswered, “What I have written,
(03:57):
I have written.” After thesoldiers crucified Jesus, they
took his clothes and dividedthem into four parts, with each
soldier getting one part. Theyalso took his long shirt, which
was all one piece of cloth, woven from top to bottom. So the
soldiers said to each other, “Weshould not tear this into parts.
Let’s throw lots to see who willget it.” This happened so that
this Scripture would come true:
“They divided my clothes among (04:20):
undefined
them, and they threw lots for myclothing.” So the soldiers did
this. Standing near his crosswere Jesus’ mother, his mother’s
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus
saw his mother and the followerhe loved standing nearby, he
(04:40):
said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son.” Then he said
to the follower, “Here is yourmother.” From that time on, the
follower took her to live in hishome. After this, Jesus knew
that everything had been done.So that the Scripture would come
true, he said, “I am thirsty.”There was a jar full of vinegar
(05:02):
there, so the soldiers soaked asponge in it, put the sponge on
a branch of a hyssop plant, andlifted it to Jesus’ mouth. When
Jesus tasted the vinegar, hesaid, “It is finished.” Then he
bowed his head and died. Thisday was Preparation Day, and the
next day was a special Sabbathday. Since the religious leaders
(05:24):
did not want the bodies to stayon the cross on the Sabbath day,
they asked Pilate to order thatthe legs of the men be broken
and the bodies be taken away. Sothe soldiers came and broke the
legs of the first man on thecross beside Jesus. Then they
broke the legs of the man on theother cross beside Jesus. But
when the soldiers came to Jesusand saw that he was already
(05:45):
dead, they did not break hislegs. But one of the soldiers
stuck his spear into Jesus’side, and at once blood and
water came out. (The one who sawthis happen is the one who told
us this, and whatever he says istrue. And he knows that he tells
the truth, and he tells it sothat you might believe.) These
(06:06):
things happened to make theScripture come true: “Not one of
his bones will be broken.” Andanother Scripture says, “They
will look at the one theystabbed.” Later, Joseph from
Arimathea asked Pilate if hecould take the body of Jesus.
(Joseph was a secret follower ofJesus, because he was afraid of
some of the leaders.) Pilategave his permission, so Joseph
(06:30):
came and took Jesus’ body away.Nicodemus, who earlier had come
to Jesus at night, went withJoseph. He brought about
seventy-five pounds of myrrh andaloes. These two men took Jesus’
body and wrapped it with thespices in pieces of linen cloth,
which is how they bury the dead.In the place where Jesus was
(06:51):
crucified, there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb
that had never been used before. The men laid Jesus in that tomb
because it was nearby, and theywere preparing to start their
Sabbath day.
John, chapter 20. Early in themorning of the first day of the
week, while it was still dark,Mary Magdalene came to the tomb
(07:11):
and saw that the stone had beentaken away from the tomb. She
ran to Simon Peter and the otherdisciple, the one whom Jesus
loved, and said, “They havetaken the Lord from the tomb,
and we don’t know where they’veput him.” Peter and the other
disciple left to go to the tomb. They were running together, but
the other disciple ran fasterthan Peter and was the first to
(07:31):
arrive at the tomb. Bending downto take a look, he saw the linen
cloths lying there, but hedidn’t go in. Following him,
Simon Peter entered the tomb andsaw the linen cloths lying
there. He also saw the facecloth that had been on Jesus’
head. It wasn’t with the otherclothes but was folded up in its
own place. Then the otherdisciple, the one who arrived at
(07:55):
the tomb first, also wentinside. He saw and believed.
They didn’t yet understand thescripture that Jesus must rise
from the dead. Then thedisciples returned to the place
where they were staying. Marystood outside near the tomb,
crying. As she cried, she bentdown to look into the tomb. She
saw two angels dressed in white, seated where the body of Jesus
(08:18):
had been, one at the head andone at the foot. The angels
asked her, “Woman, why are youcrying?” She replied, “They have
taken away my Lord, and I don’tknow where they’ve put him.” As
soon as she had said this, sheturned around and saw Jesus
standing there, but she didn’tknow it was Jesus. Jesus said to
her, “Woman, why are you crying?Who are you looking for?”
(08:41):
Thinking he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you have
carried him away, tell me whereyou have put him and I will get
him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.”She turned and said to him in
Aramaic, “Rabbouni” (which meansTeacher). Jesus said to her,
“Don’t hold on to me, for Ihaven’t yet gone up to my
Father. Go to my brothers andsisters and tell them, ‘I’m
(09:03):
going up to my Father and yourFather, to my God and your
God.’” Mary Magdalene left andannounced to the disciples,
“I’ve seen the Lord.” Then shetold them what he said to her.
It was still the first day ofthe week. That evening, while
the disciples were behind closeddoors because they were afraid
of the Jewish authorities, Jesuscame and stood among them. He
(09:26):
said, “Peace be with you.” Afterhe said this, he showed them his
hands and his side. When thedisciples saw the Lord, they
were filled with joy. Jesus saidto them again, “Peace be with
you. As the Father sent me, so Iam sending you.” Then he
breathed on them and said,“Receive the Holy Spirit. If you
(09:46):
forgive anyone’s sins, they areforgiven; if you don’t forgive
them, they aren’t forgiven.”Thomas, the one called Didymus,
one of the Twelve, wasn’t withthe disciples when Jesus came.
The other disciples told him,“We’ve seen the Lord!” But he
replied, “Unless I see the nailmarks in his hands, put my
(10:06):
finger in the wounds left by thenails, and put my hand into his
side, I won’t believe.” Aftereight days his disciples were
again in a house and Thomas waswith them. Even though the doors
were locked, Jesus entered andstood among them. He said,
“Peace be with you.” Then hesaid to Thomas, “Put your finger
(10:27):
here. Look at my hands. Put yourhand into my side. No more
disbelief. Believe!” Thomasresponded to Jesus, “My Lord and
my God!” Jesus replied, “Do youbelieve because you see me?
Happy are those who don’t seeand yet believe.” Then Jesus did
(10:47):
many other miraculous signs inhis disciples’ presence, signs
that aren’t recorded in thisscroll. But these things are
written so that you will believethat Jesus is the Christ, God’s
Son, and that believing, youwill have life in his name.
John, chapter 21. Jesus laterappeared to his disciples along
(11:08):
the shore of Lake Tiberias.Simon Peter, Thomas the Twin,
Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, and the brothers James and John,
were there, together with twoother disciples. Simon Peter
said, “I'm going fishing!” Theothers said, “We will go with
you.” They went out in theirboat. But they didn't catch a
thing that night. Early the nextmorning Jesus stood on the
(11:30):
shore, but the disciples did notrealize who he was. Jesus
shouted, “Friends, have youcaught anything?” “No!” they
answered. So he told them, “Letyour net down on the right side
of your boat, and you will catchsome fish.” They did, and the
net was so full of fish thatthey could not drag it up into
the boat. Jesus' favoritedisciple told Peter, “It's the
(11:51):
Lord!” When Simon heard it wasthe Lord, he put on the clothes
he had taken off while he wasworking. Then he jumped into the
water. The boat was only about100 meters from shore. So the
other disciples stayed in theboat and dragged in the net full
of fish. When the disciples gotout of the boat, they saw some
bread and a charcoal fire withfish on it. Jesus told his
(12:12):
disciples, “Bring some of thefish you just caught.” Simon
Peter got back into the boat anddragged the net to shore. In it
were 153 large fish, but stillthe net did not rip. Jesus said,
“Come and eat!” But none of thedisciples dared ask who he was.
They knew he was the Lord. Jesustook the bread in his hands and
gave some of it to hisdisciples. He did the same with
(12:35):
the fish. This was the thirdtime Jesus appeared to his
disciples after he was raisedfrom death. When Jesus and his
disciples had finished eating,he asked, “Simon son of John, do
you love me more than the othersdo?” Simon Peter answered, “Yes,
Lord, you know I do!” “Then feedmy lambs,” Jesus said. Jesus
(12:55):
asked a second time, “Simon sonof John, do you love me?” Peter
answered, “Yes, Lord, you know Ilove you!” “Then take care of my
sheep,” Jesus told him. Jesusasked a third time, “Simon son
of John, do you love me?” Peterwas hurt because Jesus had asked
him three times if he loved him.So he told Jesus, “Lord, you
(13:18):
know everything. You know I loveyou.” Jesus replied, “Feed my
sheep. I tell you for certainthat when you were a young man,
you dressed yourself and wentwherever you wanted to go. But
when you are old, you will holdout your hands. Then others will
wrap your belt around you andlead you where you don't want to
go.” Jesus said this to tell howPeter would die and bring honor
(13:40):
to God. Then he said to Peter,“Follow me!” Peter turned and
saw Jesus' favorite disciplefollowing them. He was the same
one who had sat next to Jesus atthe meal and had asked, “Lord,
who is going to betray you?”When Peter saw this disciple, he
asked Jesus, “Lord, what abouthim?” Jesus answered, “What is
it to you, if I want him to liveuntil I return? You must follow
(14:03):
me.” So the rumor spread amongthe other disciples that this
disciple would not die. ButJesus did not say he would not
die. He simply said, “What is itto you, if I want him to live
until I return?” This discipleis the one who told all of this.
He wrote it, and we know he istelling the truth. Jesus did
many other things. If they wereall written in books, I don't
(14:25):
suppose there would be roomenough in the whole world for
all the books.
Well, Beloved, today we read inchapter 19, about the
crucifixion of Jesus. And inchapter 21, we read about some
of the appearances of Jesusafter the resurrection and
before his ascension. Of course, every event spoken of in these
(14:46):
three chapters is worthy offurther comment, but there's
just one word in these threechapters that gets to me every
time I read it, one word. Canyou guess what that word is?
Mary. Picture it. Here she isstanding at the opening of the
tomb that had held Jesus' brokenbody. She's utterly
(15:06):
broken-hearted that someone hasapparently taken him away. And
all she wants is for this personwho she thinks is a gardener to
tell her where they've takenhim. She's weeping. She's nearly
inconsolable. All she can thinkof is finding her Lord. How do I
know this? Well, in nearly everymention of a person coming in
(15:28):
contact with an angel, we'retold that the person is
terrified. So many timesscripture reports that the angel
says, "Be not afraid." But hereMary sees two angels sitting
where Jesus' body had been. Andwe don't read anything about
Mary being frightened at all.The angels asked Mary why she
(15:49):
was crying, and she answers themlike she was talking to any
normal person. All she can thinkof is finding her Lord. And when
she turns around to leave, andJesus is standing there, she
doesn't recognize him. We're nottold why. Maybe she couldn't see
clearly because of the tears inher eyes. Maybe she didn't even
(16:10):
look directly at him. Maybe hergaze was directed at the ground.
Maybe Jesus' appearance wasaltered in some way. But
whatever the reason, she didn'trecognize him. So she said to
him, "Sir, if you've taken himaway, tell me where you've put
him and I will go and get him."And that's when it happened. He
said her name. Mary. In John10:27, Jesus said, "My sheep
(16:35):
hear my voice." There wassomething about the way Jesus
said her name that made thereality of who this was standing
in front of her cause her tocry, "Teacher!" And she either
fell on her knees and hugged hislegs or just hugged him while
they were standing. What ajoyful scene. And now the tears
were of happiness and relief.Mary. She had heard him say her
(16:59):
name so many times before, andno one said it like he did. Once
she heard him say her name. There was no doubt. Both of my
parents have been gone for manyyears now, but I can still hear
what it sounded like when theysaid my name. I daresay I'll
probably never forget the soundof their voices when they said,
"Steven." And I'm guessing youcan hear how somebody you love
(17:22):
says or said your name. I don'tknow what Jesus' physical voice
sounds like. But I have felt himspeak to me in that still small
voice. But oh how I look forwardto hearing his voice call my
name when I see himface-to-face. How about you?
(17:42):
