Transcript Today's Bible Translation Bible translation used in today's episode: Ch. 1-4 NET Podcast Introduction It’s Epistles Sunday, and we’ll begin the book of Hebrews with the reading of chapters 1-4. I’m calling this episode “Avoid Spiritual Drift.“ Design: Jason Paschall | Photo: Tim Wildsmith on Unsplash Summary In chapters one and two of Hebrews, the author is writing to Christian Jews, seeking to establish the identity of Jesus in relation to the Old Testament. They emphasize the importance of recognizing Jesus' divine nature and his role in salvation. By drawing from Old Testament scriptures, the author highlights Jesus, and the significance of his redemptive work. The the message is to pay close attention, remain steadfast in faith so as not to drift away from the truth of who Jesus is. Hebrews 3: In this chapter, the author compares Jesus to Moses. By doing so, they aim to demonstrate that Jesus surpasses Moses in authority and importance. The author refers to Psalm 95, warning against the hardening of hearts and rebellion towards God. They draw parallels between the Israelites' disobedience during their wilderness journey and the need for believers to remain faithful and avoid falling away from God's grace. We must pay closer attention to what we've heard so
that we do not drift away.
This is the Lifespring! One YearBible coming to you from
Riverside, California Andpodcasting since 2004. I'm your
OG Godcaster. Steve Webb. It's apistol Sunday And we'll begin

(00:24):
the book of Hebrews with areading of chapters one through
four. The website isLifespringmedia.com. And I'll
have contact information at theend of the show. I hope your
weekend is going well. Let'sread. Let's pray before we read,
our Heavenly Father, we thankyou so much for your word. And
we thank you for our timetogether. As we read today, I

(00:44):
pray that You would bless usteach us I pray this in Jesus
name. Amen. All right, are youready? Let's begin.
Hebrews chapter one, after Godspoke long ago in various
portions, And in various ways toour ancestors, through the
prophets, in these last days, hehas spoken to us in a son, whom

(01:07):
he appointed heir of all things,And through whom He created the
world. And the sun is theradiance of His glory, And the
representation of his essence. And he sustains all things by
his powerful word. And so whenhe had accomplished cleansing
for sins, He sat down to theright hand of the Majesty on
high, And thus he became so farbetter than the angels as he had

(01:30):
inherited a name superior totheirs. For two, which of the
angels did God ever say, You aremy son today I have fathered
you. And in another place, hesays, I will be his father And
he will be my son. But when heagain brings his firstborn into
the world, he says, Let all theangels of God worship Him. And

(01:52):
He says, of the angels, he makeshis angels spirits, And his
ministers a flame of fire, butof the sun, he says, Your
throne, oh, God is forever Andever, And a righteous scepter is
the scepter of Your kingdom. Youhave loved righteousness And
hated lawlessness. So God, YourGod has anointed you over your

(02:12):
companions with the oil ofrejoicing. And you founded the
earth And the beginning, Lord,And the heavens are the works of
your hands, they will perish butyou continue, And they will all
grow old like a garment, Andlike a robe, you will fold them
up, And like a garment, theywill be changed, but you are the
same And your yours will neverrun out. But to which of the

(02:37):
angels Has he ever said, Sit atmy right hand until I make your
enemies a footstool for yourfeet? Are they not all
ministering spirits set out toserve those who will inherit
salvation in
Hebrews chapter two. Therefore,we must pay closer attention to
what we have heard so that we donot drift away. For if the

(02:58):
message spoken through angelsproved to be so firm that every
violation or disobediencereceived it's just penalty, how
will we escape if we neglectsuch a great salvation, And it
was first communicated throughthe Lord And was confirmed to us
by those who heard him while Godconfirmed their witness with
signs And wonders And variousmiracles And gifts of the Holy

(03:19):
Spirit, distributed according toHis will, for he did not put the
world to come about which we'respeaking under the control of
angels. Instead, someonetestified somewhere, what is man
that You think of him or the sonof man that you care for him,
You made him lower than theangels for a little while, you
crowned him with glory Andhonor, you put all things under

(03:41):
his control. For when he put allthings under his control, He
left nothing outside of hiscontrol. At present, we do not
yet see all things under hiscontrol. But we see Jesus who
was made lower than the angelsfor a little while, now crowned
with glory And honor because hesuffered death, so that by God's
grace, he would experience deathon behalf of everyone. And for

(04:04):
it was fitting for him, for whomAnd through whom all things
exist, in bringing many sons toglory, to make the pioneer of
their salvation perfect throughsufferings. For indeed, he who
makes holy And those being madeholy, all have the same origin.
And so he is not ashamed to callthem brothers And sisters,

(04:25):
saying, I will proclaim yourname to be my brothers in the
midst of the assembly, I willpraise you. Again, he says, I
will be confident in him. Andagain, here I am with the
children God has given me.Therefore, since the children
share in flesh And blood, helikewise shared in their
humanity so that through death,he could destroy the one who

(04:48):
holds the power of death, thatis the devil And set free those
who were held in slavery alltheir lives by the fear of
death. For surely his concern isnot for angels. But he is
concerned for Abraham'sdescendants. Therefore, he had
to be made like his brothers Andsisters in every respect so that
he could become a merciful Andfaithful high priest in things

(05:11):
relating to God, to makeatonement for the sins of the
people. And for since he himselfsuffered when he was tempted, He
is able to help those who aretempted.
Hebrews chapter three, thereforeholy brothers And sisters,
partners And a heavenly calling, take note of Jesus, the Apostle
And High Priest whom we confess, who was faithful to the one who

(05:33):
appointed him, as Moses was alsoin God's house, for he has come
to deserve greater glory thanMoses, just as the builder of a
house deserves greater honorthan the house itself. For every
house is built by someone, butthe builder of all things is
God. Now, Moses was faithful inall God's house as a servant to

(05:54):
testify to the things that wouldbe spoken. But Christ is
faithful as his son over God'shouse, we are of his house if in
fact, we hold firmly to ourconfidence And the hope we take
pride in. Therefore, as the HolySpirit says, Oh, that today you
would listen as he speaks, donot harden your hearts as in the

(06:14):
rebellion in the day of testingin the wilderness. There your
fathers tested me And tried me,And they saw my works for 40
years. Therefore, I becameprovoked at that generation And
said, their hearts are alwayswandering, And they have not
known my ways. As I swore in myanger, they will never enter my
rest. See to it, brothers Andsisters, that none of you has an

(06:39):
evil unbelieving heart thatforsakes the living God, but
exhort one another each day, aslong as it is called today, that
none of you may become hardenedby sins deception, for we have
become partners with Christ, ifin fact, we hold our initial
confidence firm until the end.And as it says, Oh, that today

(07:00):
you would listen as he speaks,do not harden your hearts as in
the rebellion, for which one'sheard And rebelled? Was it not
all who came out of Egypt underMoses leadership, And against
whom was God provoked for 40years? Was it not those who
sinned, whose dead bodies fellin the wilderness, And to whom
did he swear they would neverenter into this rest, except

(07:23):
those who were disobedient. Sowe see that they could not enter
because of unbelief.
Hebrews chapter four. Therefore,we must be wary that while the
promise of entering his restremains open, none of you may
seem to have come short of it,for we had good news proclaimed
to us just as they did, but themessage they heard did them no

(07:44):
good, since they did not join inwith those who heard it in
faith. For we who have believedenter that rest, as he has said,
as I swore in my anger, theywill never enter my rest. And
yet God's works wereaccomplished from the foundation
of the world, for he has spokensomewhere about the seventh day
in this way, And God rested onthe seventh day from all his

(08:07):
works, but to repeat the textscited earlier, they will never
enter my rest. Therefore, itremains for some to enter it,
yet those to whom it waspreviously proclaimed, it did
not enter because ofdisobedience. So God again
ordains a certain day today, speaking through David after so
long a time as in the wordsquoted before, oh, that today,

(08:30):
you would listen as he speaks,do not harden your hearts. For
if Joshua had given them rest,God would not have spoken
afterward about another day.Consequently, a Sabbath rest
remains for the people of God,for the one who enters God's
rest has also rested from Hisworks just as God did from his
own works. Thus, we must makeevery effort to enter that rest,

(08:54):
so that no one may fall byfollowing the same pattern of
disobedience. For the word ofGod is living And active And
sharper than any double edgedsword, piercing even to the
point of dividing soul fromspirit And joints from marrow,
it is able to judge the desiresAnd thoughts of the heart, And
no creature is hidden from God,but everything is naked And

(09:17):
exposed to the eyes of Him towhom we must render And account.
Therefore, since we have a greathigh priest who has passed
through the heavens, Jesus theSon of God, let us hold fast to
our confession. For we do nothave a high priest incapable of
sympathizing with ourweaknesses, but One who has been
tempted in every way just as weare, yet without sin. Therefore,

(09:41):
let us confidently approach thethrone of grace to receive mercy
And find grace whenever we needhelp.
We don't know the author of thebook of Hebrews, but we do know
to whom it was written. It waswritten to Christian Jews in for
their benefit as well as ours. Most of chapter one is dedicated
to establish of who Jesus is inlight of the Old Testament. And

(10:03):
then chapter two begins withthis sentence. Therefore, we
must pay closer attention towhat we have heard, so that we
do not drift away. Now, we'vealready talked about this before
on the show, but whenever Istudy the Bible And come across
the word, therefore, I askedmyself, what's the therefore
therefore, the word therefore isa link between two thoughts.

(10:25):
It's like saying, because ofwhat I just said, Now, I'm going
to say this. So in this case, the therefore refers to the
message of chapter one, namely, the truth of who Jesus is.
chapter two verse one could say, since Jesus is God, we need to
really pay close attention towhat we have heard, so that we

(10:47):
do not drift away. Now, I grewup here in Southern California,
And I lived within about a halfan hour's drive to the beach.
And when I was in high school, Ilearned how to surf. And for
some time, I would go surfingalmost every day before school
most of the time. Now, one thingI learned when I learned how to
surf was when you're surfing, you often spend a lot of time

(11:08):
sitting on your board, waitingfor the next wave waves often
come in sets, almost alwaysactually. And there could be
several minutes between sets. Soyou're just sitting on your
board watching for the next set.And many times here in Southern
California, And this is probablytrue of most beaches around the
world, there are currents in thewater that flows parallel to the

(11:31):
beach. If you were standing onthe sand, looking out of the
water, the current would becoming from either the left to
the right or the right to theleft. Now an interesting thing
about these currents is thatwhen you're in the current, you
can't feel it, you're carriedalong in the current at the
exact same speed as the current. So you don't have a feeling of
movement. The only way youreally know you're moving is if

(11:54):
you look at some sort oflandmark on the beach, And
you'll see that you're moving inrelation to that landmark, maybe
you're looking at a lifeguardtower, or a towel on the beach
or a big rock. But you can seethat in relation to that item,
you're being moved by thecurrent. And sometimes the
current is quite strong. So ifyou're sitting on your board,
you can easily be carried quitefar from where you started. It

(12:18):
takes no effort at all to findyourself 100 Or more yards down
from where you began. So to stayin that sweet spot you want to
be in when the next set comesthrough, you have to continually
be paddling against the current,it takes effort to stay close to
that spot, or you'll drift away.verse one says, Therefore, we

(12:39):
must pay closer attention towhat we have heard, so that we
do not drift away. Beloved, wehave to put effort into our
relationship with Jesus so thatwe don't drift away. If we
ignore the teaching we'vereceived. If we don't
continually paddle our spiritualsurfboard to fight the current
of life that is continuallytrying to move us away from him,

(13:02):
we'll find ourselves far awayfrom where we want to be. And
just because you're close to himtoday, does not guarantee that
you will always be in the sweetspot. This is as true for a new
believer as it is for an old godor like me, who's been a
believer for over 50 years, I'msorry to say the current never
goes away. We have to continueto paddle that board to stay

(13:26):
close to Jesus. Now let's moveover to chapter three. The
author of Hebrews in chapterthree compares Jesus to Moses.
Why would he do that? well, because the primary audience for
the book is the Hebrew or Jew,And Moses is their most highly
regarded person. The author wasexplaining how And why Jesus was

(13:47):
to be held in even higher regardthan Moses. He does this by
making some opening statementsin the first six verses. And
then he refers back to Psalmschapter 95, a book of course,
from the Old Testament, or isthe Jews note the Torah. In
doing this, he takes them tofamiliar ground. Psalm 95 is a
warning to the Jews not toharden their hearts toward God,

(14:10):
as their ancestors did whenMoses led them through the
desert for 40 years. Did youever notice that we humans tend
to be forgetful when I was a newbeliever, And I've mentioned
this on the show before, thefirst time, I attempted to read
through the Bible And read abouthow God delivered the Jews from
the Egyptian pharaoh Andslavery, how God parted the Red

(14:30):
Sea to make an escape route asthey were being pursued by
Pharaoh And his army, And howthey soon turned to worshiping a
golden calf when Moses was onthe mountain receiving the
tablets from the hand of God. Iwas completely amazed at how
quickly they forgot the Lord. How stupid can these people be?
I thought, how can they forgetthe miraculous way that God

(14:52):
delivered them? Why would theyso quickly turn their backs on
God? And then you know whathappened? God spoke to my heart
in He said, Steve, you do thesame thing. And it was true.
Being so young And my faith, I'donly been a Christian for about
maybe five years at that time. Iknew there were times that I'd
forgotten God, I knew that I hadalready failed him And decided

(15:15):
to do my own thing. Yes, God isfaithful. And when I asked
forgiveness, He was quick toforgive. And as he gently spoke
to my heart about how I was nodifferent than the Jews who
forgot him, I realized that Iwas no better And no worse than
them. And I realized at thattime that I needed to make a
concerted effort to stay closeto Him, to make an effort to

(15:38):
remember the times that he didsomething wonderful, And yes,
even miraculous for me. Now, Iwish I could say that since that
day, I never turned my back onGod. But if I said that, I'd be
lying. I was about 21 years old, then And I'll be 68. Soon. Over
the years between then And now.I'm sorry to say that I've

(15:59):
failed him countless times. I'mnot proud of it. But being a bit
of a perfectionist, I hatefalling short. But like the
apostle Paul wrote in Romans719, for the good that I want, I
do not do but I practice thevery evil that I do not want.
And then dropping down to verse24. Paul continued, wretched man

(16:23):
that I am, who will set me freefrom the body of this death.
Thanks be to God through JesusChrist our Lord. Yes, beloved,
over the years, I have learnedAnd I have grown ever more
appreciative of Jesus gift offorgiveness. He promises in His
Word to forgive us, not becausewe deserve it, but because of

(16:45):
what he did for us. As I lookback, I'm amazed And humbled
that God cares for me, but it'sonly because he sees me through
the lens of the sacrifice ofJesus. The father sees me
through that lens as blameless.Psalm 103 Verse 12, says, As far
as the east is from the west, sofar, has He removed our

(17:07):
transgressions from us. Does Godforgive? Oh, yes, he does.
Praise His name. Yes, he does.Hallelujah. Isn't it good to
know that he forgives? What areyour thoughts? Do you have a
comment or question contactinformation is at the end of the

Steve Webb (17:45):
I've got some praises And prayer requests to
share with you today. Let'sstart off with the praises. This
one came in from James inNorway. He said hi again, Steve.
Thanks for the praise Andprayers on last Sunday show a
new AFib report came in on dad'sApple Watch this morning, which
showed only 2% AFib events overthe past week. Now, let me stop
right here. You know, I've gota, an Apple Watch as well. And

(18:09):
the first time I saw thatparticular Notification come in
for me. It actually said for meanyway that it showed 2% or less
AFib events over the past week.So ask your dad to take a look
at that. So it isn't necessarilyexactly 2%. For me, it gives me
that same report every week, even though I've had zero AFib

(18:30):
reports because zero of courseis less than 2%. So I think
that's their bottom threshold.Anyway, continuing here with
James's note, he reckons it'spartly due to his improved mood
And lower stress from my havingspent time with him recently to
sort out some long standingcomputer problems. So you're
that guy in your family. I'mthat guy in my family. I'm the

(18:53):
dude named Ben from my family,Leanne, obviously, plus my
mother in law And sometimes evenother family members. But
anyway, let's continue. And fromhis brother visiting him from
out of town for some days, he'sprobably right. But in that
case, I can't help asking whonudged me And his brother into
reaching out to him. And he puta wink emoji. He says, I do

(19:16):
believe I do believe some moreprayers in order here. Yes,
indeed. Praise the Lord forthat. He continues, this all
reminds me to tell you aboutsomething really boss that I've
noticed when you lead us inprayer on the show. Now that's a
term I haven't heard in a longtime. Back when I was a kid. We
used to say, oh, that's boss. SoI guess that's the slang in

(19:38):
Norway now. That's cool. Anyway, when you lead us in prayer, when
you lead us in prayer on theshow, sometimes you ask God to
bring the right people intocontact with the person we're
praying for. I think this isespecially boss because it was
just a string of the rightpeople quote, unquote, that led
me to join the Lifespringfamily. Among them was my

(19:59):
product. Every coach, believe itor not, who recommended a few
books for me to read. One booksuggested I quote, try to live
like someone is watching me.Unquote. Another said we should
all quote read something wise, unquote, like the Bible every
morning. My two science degrees. And I certainly didn't expect
for me to end up here with youproclaiming Hooray for Jesus.

(20:21):
But here I am. That's awesome. You probably know this already.
He continues. But I've beenmeaning to tell you that I think
that you're praying for theright thing when you ask God to
bring the right people into yourson's life. I join you in
praying for this for your son.Thank you, James. I appreciate
that. That still is a matter ofprayer. I'll just leave it at

(20:44):
that. PS I'm also praying forone of your eyeballs tomorrow,
was it? well, yeah, he sent thisin a few days ago. So yes, when
you sent it, it was going to betomorrow. I appreciate your
prayers. And I'll talk a littlebit more about my eyeball in
just a minute. And let's see,Kathy had a checkup at City of
Hope this past week, Dell saidthat her markers went up a

(21:06):
little bit. But her doctor isn'tconcerned because of the CT last
month, which I shared with youhere on the show. And all the
lab results at COA to this week, were good except for one or two.
So the doc is very pleased. Sothat is certainly a praise. And
then next Cassie is home now Ithink I shared that with you.
And she's doing well. But she'shaving quite a bit of pain from

(21:26):
the hole that was drilled in herskull during her surgery. I
don't know why that would hurtthe holes only about the size of
a quarter. Also, Brian said thatshe does have some nerve pain.
But the doctor said that'sbecause of the manipulation they
had to do during the operation. And he assured her that this
pain would disappear. So we'restill praising God because by

(21:48):
all accounts, she will heal Andher pain will be a thing of the
past. So praise the Lord forthat. And I want to praise the
Lord for the thus far greatresults with my cataract surgery
on my left eyeball. My vision isnot yet completely clear in that
I but each day is a little bitbetter. At this point, I'm
actually hopeful that I'll beable to see better out of that

(22:08):
eye than I have in many, manyyears. I think I told you that
this is the eye that has neverreally had good vision, even
with glasses. So at this point,it's been less than a week
before the surgery. And it cantake up to about a month for the
vision to stabilize. So we'llsee. But it actually looks, it
looks promising. And now prayerrequests. This one came in from

(22:29):
Brother John in Canada, brotherJohn has been a Lifespring
family member for many, many, many years. And his prayer
request says this. life feelsespecially heavy, it's busy as
always, And even more so than ithas been. And I feel like I'm
being crushed under the weight, praying And trying to learn how
to leave the burden at the crosswithout picking it up again.

(22:51):
I've agreed to help out in mychurch by taking on the
bookkeeping, And I have doubtswhether it was a good choice,
praying for peace And wisdom inhow to go about this. Still
working the other two jobs totry to keep up. Life is busy
praying for some relief, or atleast peace And hope that this
is the way I should walk in, asit says in Isaiah, chapter 30

(23:12):
Verse 21. Thanks, Steve, for allyou do. I'm closer to being
caught up. I'm on the June 13Show And blessings to you And
your family. Thanks. well, John.Yeah, thank you for that. And I
had been praying for you, sinceI got this request in the mail.
I mentioned this to you on myreturn email to you. But I'll

(23:33):
say it here also for otherpeople that might be in a
similar situation. Leanna And Ihave always been really, really
involved in the churches that wehave attended. And there have
been many times where someone inthe church would say we have a
need in this area. And you know,we've known that others could do

(23:54):
it. But don't volunteer Andwanting to be useful servants we
have volunteered even when wewere already too busy. And that
that hasn't always worked out.Great, because life is busy. And
when you have many otherresponsibilities, even, you
know, in the church to pick upyet another thing sometimes just

(24:18):
is too much. So, John, I'm notgiving you any advice here other
than to you know, we'll continueto pray that God will give you
wisdom. But you know, forothers, if you're already doing
something And you're alreadybusy And having a difficult time
keeping up with things.Sometimes it's okay to make

(24:38):
other people uncomfortable asthe Lord works on their heart to
be able to bring them to thepoint where they'll come forward
And say yes, I can do it. So youmight even look at it like when
you step in too soon you aredepriving someone else the
blessing of being a servant. Sofor what that's worth, And then
I think it was yesterday, Lestersaid In a donation, And in that

(25:02):
donation, he mentioned anaccident that he had been in And
he asked for prayer. And so nowhere is his prayer request.
Lester says I was involved in anaccident on March 24, And lost
my car but was not hurt. Praisethe Lord for that part of it.
Insurance settled on a part ofthe car's value, And I still
have 1000s ofdollars to paybecause they did not cover all

(25:26):
of it. And I don't have moneyfor another car. I felt like God
is telling me to not borrowmoney or to do car payments, at
least for now. I was justapproved to receive Social
Security And it does not covereverything I need. But God has
been faithful, And he is havingme experience His goodness. Yes,
Lester, God is always faithful. He continues, my dilemma is that

(25:48):
a lawyer could help me recoupmore money to pay off my bills
And get another car paymentfree. But they want me to do
things like I was hurt personalinjury lawsuit, And I was not
hurt. I'm trying to be patientwith what God wants me to do.
And I don't like lawsuits, butinsurance says that this is the
only option I have, as theywon't respond to anything else.

(26:11):
I have four years to file aclaim. But I'm praying that God
would give me peace about doingthe right thing. Sorry for being
so long winded. Thanks, Steve.well, Lester, again, praise the
